[lace] Quiet list has woken up

2016-10-16 Thread Janis Savage
Thank you to everyone who put my mind at rest re the quiet time on the list. I
am so jealous of all the conventions and other lace-ins in USA, Australia and
UK. It must be wonderful to have all these top-notch teachers to choose from
and to keep up-to-date with everthing in the lace world. That is why I need my
daily arachne lace fix, and get worried if it is not there for a few days.

I have also been very busy for this past week or two. It was our bi-annual
exhibition in Johannesburg, combined with the Embroiderers Guild. Apart from
being chair of the Witwatersrand Lace Guild and editor of the quarterly
newsletter and webmaster and Facebook admin, I also run The Lace Place for all
their supplies, so I was involved everywhere.

Now that it is over I am looking forward to the holiday season when I hope to
get some peaceful lacemaking time in.

The exhibition was a great success over 2 days and the reporter from the local
newspaper came to take pics and interview the organisers, so we hope to be in
next week's edition. When I get some pictures back from our photographer I
will put them on our website and tell you where to find them.

Lace greetings from

Janis in South Africa

where we have just had a couple of showers of rain. The first in about 3
months and hope it will break the drought.

[lace] Quiet list.

2016-10-14 Thread Kathleen Harris
Hello everyone,

I have been busy too! I have just been to Bruges for a week, making lace. There
were twenty of us, staying in the Beguinhof, with Anne-Marie Verbeke-Billiet as
our tutor. There were six types of lace being worked, and plenty of fun and
friendship in between times.

This weekend I am going to our Guild retreat. Guild members stay in a local
hotel from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. We have four tutors, teaching
various textile techniques - but no lace of course. And next weekend is the
Braid Society AGM, hosted by the braiding group I belong to. So,, yes, a busy
time, but lots of chances to catch up with friends, as well as practice crafts.

Best wishes
Kathleen

2016-02-26 Thread Beth Marshall
I'd been too busy to notice but yes, the list is very quiet at the
moment - I hope that's because everyone is too busy making lace to talk
about it

I finished the tape lace snail I started on New Year's Day a couple of
week's ago, but haven't had time to take it off the pillow yet or to
mount last year's lace project :-(
It's getting close to the start of the gardening season so by the time
I've mounted those pieces I probably won't start a new lace project
until autumn.

is the Christmas Fair at Solihull this Saturday when, I am sure, I will be

Hi

I think that this is lovely.I hope it is of some help to her.

Memory quilts are made using photos from a given person's life transferred
to

fabric for the quilt. We have gathered photos from around the family, and
when Lorraine has the quilt others can use it as a starting point for
conversation, some things she will remember and others she will not. It
will

also serve as a mini family history for her children and grandchildren who
will not now be able to ask her. 60 is young for an Alzheimers Diagnosis,
but
her family seem to have a lot of local support and her middle son, aged
36, is

acting as her carer.

Some people do Memory quilts for significant Anniversarys, 60th for
example,

or significant birthdays.

Lorraine is younger than I am.

2012-11-27 Thread Lyn Bailey
I have things on 4 pillows. I have a Bucks edging on my travel pillow.
I've finished 14 inches of 53. This pillow will come with me to Sweden on
the 16th to celebrate Christmas with Middle Child. Haven't done that for 5
years. Will be bringing what I can for an American Christmas dinner. I
have the altar cloth on another pillow. I have a beginners' Valenciennes
pieces from a class that I WILL finish, so I can get back to the
handkerchief, number XI from Kumiko Nakazaki's first folio of Flanders
patterns. Just getting to the first corner on that one. Actually, there
are things on other pillows, but I haven't worked on them in a while, and
the idea is what you're working on now.

But I have decided I need a new sweater for Sweden. The Lett Lopi yarn from
Iceland and the book from Canada combined here yesterday. I have about 3
weeks to finish it, so I'm doing that. On Thursday I take the train, 3
hours each way, to New York, to see the lace exhibit at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, so I'm bringing the sleeves to work on the train.

Lyn in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, where they predicted snow this
morning, first of the season, but so far it's rain, and sometimes a bit of
wet snow mixed in. Disappointing. The first snowfall of the season is
always uplifting. Today looks grey, not bright and white. Sun later today,
or tomorrow.

2012-11-27 Thread Clay Blackwell
Quite a few years ago, a very dear friend of mine died. She left a
seven-year-old son. I wanted to do something to help, but lived several
hundred miles away. I decided to make him a memory quilt. I used a simple
star pattern quilt which had squares in the center of each star, where I placed
the pictures. Her husband sent me many pictures to choose from, as well as a
box of her colorful nursing scrubs. Because she had chosen her scrubs herself,
and wore them daily, they were all familiar to her son, and not surprisingly,
they all complimented each other. I knew that the grieving process is
difficult for a child, so each of the pictures was covered by four triangles
that could be opened to reveal the picture.

His father hung the quilt in the child's bedroom, but he (the child) did not
want it there. So it was moved to the father's room. Before long, the child
began to visit it, and gradually began to look at the pictures, and finally
asked to have it in his room.

The other thing that struck me was that working on this quilt was the best
thing I could have done to get me through my own grieving process. There were
lots of tears, and lots of good memories sewn into it!

Re: [lace] Quiet? - St. Catherine's Day

2012-11-26 Thread Jeriames
Dear Sue and all other Arachne members,

The following mail (below) was sent to Arachne on November 20th. I
explained America's Thanksgiving holiday, because it is not mentioned on
calendars in other nations. Other nations celebrate, but on different dates.

I hoped my memo might encourage Arachne members in other countries to pick
up the slack with, perhaps, some words about St. Catherine's Day. One
response came - from Phil in Australia. I found it very inspiring to read
about the Catterns Day celebration in New South Wales. So much so that I sent
it on to the President of one of the lace groups to which I belong, for
additional sharing.

**Everyone - it is important to stop lurking and expecting others to do
the writing. Any list like Arachne is only vital if everyone participates.
It seems that there are fewer members trying to keep lace alive around the
world. We must correct this. Please step up to the challenge and
actively participate.**

Giving thanks that we have Avital to moderate Arachne.

Sue, This was sent November 20, 2012:

Americans will be celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 22nd.
Most American women are busy shopping for, cooking for, or traveling to
visit relatives, in connection with this family-oriented holiday. This helps
to explain why lace correspondence has dropped off.

St. Catherine's Day is Sunday, November 25th. It is a day to celebrate
the patron saint of Lacemakers. You can read more about this in our
archives: _http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html_
(http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html)

Put St. Catherine's Day in the Subject line.

If any local lace groups are celebrating this holiday, please share
details. For example, were Cattern Cakes served? Did you wear lace? Did you
make lace? Etc.

[lace] Quiet?/what lace

2012-11-26 Thread Janice Blair
I have sent both of my christmas cards off and hopefully Ayla in NZ will not
have to wait too long. So, that lace done and my class that I taught based on
the lace completed, what should I do? I finished a fourth sample of the piece
that was on my pillow after the class. I finished knitting the mittens with
fold over tips and holes for the thumbs to poke through for my teenage
granddaughter. Now she can text without getting too cold. I do have my Beds
Lester piece, but I need good light for that and the days seem so dreary at the
moment. I have two pillows with yardage that I use for demos, but I want
something to tackle while I watch tv.

I would like to do some needlelace around a christmas ball. The ball is one
with a covering of fine silky thread but unfortunately it is not soft so I
can't
stick pins in it. I tried working a couronne around my finger, and then wanted
to work some loopy brussels ground using DMC 12, but it is hard to tension with
nothing to pull against. Has anyone done anything on a ball in thread? How do
you get started? I have worked around plumbing parts and beads before but this
is driving me nuts as it just slips about.

BTW, Claire your phrase knocking up has a very different meaning in the US.
Good job it was followed by tiny crocheted owls which explained what you

Hi All,

Working on a french fan bookmark for a young lady who was a great support to
her Mum (was client as Palliative Care Volunteer) who married in Scotland
recently. Went to a Church Camp when on holidays and found her man.

Have some quilting commitments (not good weather in Aussie for quilting at the
moment) like a Memory quilt for my sister who has an Alzheimers diagnosis,
hope to get back to my Eeva-Liisa Guardian Angel over the holiday period.

Preparing some pillows, notes etc for a new Lacemakers class in the new Year.

Am working on 9-pin BL edging out of gold thread with spangles. Instead
of using a pricking, have also tried using check gingham as the guide for
my pattern. So far I'd rather use a pricking, but with some help from a
friend, we decided to mark the gingham to help me keep track.

Hi Arachnids,

This is a busy time of the year for everyone, what with Thanksgiving, St
Nikolaas (5th/6th December in the Netherlands), probably others as well for
other nations and Christmas so near most of us have our hands full.

Am working on my second exchange piece. First one in needle lace is of to
Canada today, hope to finish the second one in mainly Milanese over the next
week. Not quite the urgency as it stays in the UK. Also on the pillows are a
soft green runner adapted from a pattern on the Lace Guild calendar of a
couple of years ago and the dragon mask which has not got much further this
year as other commitments have got in the way.

Happy lace making; oh for more hours in the day for our hobby -sigh-

I have done my lace for the card exchange, and am finishing a snowflake mat

wooden stars with a lace insert and one has a nativity scene pendant inside and
the other a lacemaker. So many patterns I want to do but never enough time.

I received a fabulous lace exchange, again, this year which is a piece of

proudly waiting for the rest of our decorations to join it. I will add the

Hi Beth...

The main reason that teachers start you with Flanders is that the ground
work is very different. I think that if you work a piece with the
typical Flanders ground, and you can get to the point that the ground is
something you can do without giving it much thought, it is perfectly
alright to skip on to Binche... There are some wonderful Binche pieces
out there waiting for you!!

Dear Karen and others starved for lace mail,

Because my in-box was empty on Saturday, I sent out a memo about using

You should have received the memo -- it is listed in our archive.

Another place to read when away from home and your lace pillow on a rainy
vacation day is _http://lace.lacefairy.com/_ (http://lace.lacefairy.com/)

If you cannot remember address, you will remember Lacefairy and can do a
search. There is lots to look at and learn at this site of 1,000 pages.
Lori is happy to receive corrections, so don't be shy about sending them.

It is OK if Arachne is quiet. It may mean everyone is busy doing other

may be out demonstrating their lacemaking skills. A good thing!

[lace] quiet list

2009-06-08 Thread Beth Marshall
The list seems very quiet - I've not seen a message since Friday- so this is a
test to see if things are working.

Lace content: in between clearing my garden shed (to be demolished today) I've
been working on my latest lace project: I've adapted the wide insertion from
the latest set of Retournac patterns to make a square motif. This has created
some very sharp v-shaped direction changes in the trails, to add to the
technical difficulties already there. I'm working with three/four cluny/beds
books beside me, plus the encyclopedia of lace techniques (whose title/author
I have temporarily forgotten), but I'm mostly fudging it - trying things to
see what works.

I'm using a salmon pink Goldschild linen, which is unusual for me, I usually
work in white or ecru but I want this for a cushion cover to harmonise with
the other cushions on my sofa. It's a very nice thread to work with although a
bit wiry and springy compared with cotton, it needs firm tensioning after
every stitch.

Hope the radio Silence is because everyone's too busy making lace to write
emails.

making lace. And your Cluny project looks magnific. You remind me of myself,

Re: [lace] quiet list

2009-06-08 Thread Clay Blackwell

Hi Beth -

You're right, the list has been quiet! Last week, it was *so* quiet
that I went to the archives to check and see if there had been any posts
I had missed. Well... in fact, there had been... I had missed an
entire week of Arachne! (I've been busy, so hadn't really had time
anyway...). So I wrote to Avital, and she checked and found that I had
been dropped off the list - something that happens if your messages are
bounced a couple of times.

Evidently my ISP (Comcast) is at it again! David had a terrible time
getting through to me for a while there and we never did figure out why.

But as least I'm getting Arachne again!

Lace content: I'm down to the wire with last-minute preparations for
the third Lace at Sweet Briar! We have more people coming than ever,
and 75% of the people coming have been here before. Part of the
preparation is to secure the dates for *next* year, and so, for the
record, if you'd like to come, reserve the dates June 20 - 26, 2010.

That is my immediate plan:-) Hopefully it will be good enough. this one is
one of a set of 4 for my sister. If this first one is too bad I will just
make a complete new set of 4. Obviously now I am past half way it is going
well, just this is a rarely used ground.

What I do find is if they are put away for a week or two then you can see
how bad, or not they really are. I have been prepared to discard several
pieces over the summer but when left there is only one I haven't wanted to
use for its original purpose. I know a small mistake makes it slightly
unique and genuinly hand made, I just dont like to give it away if it is
always in my face.

Thanks for you input Karen.

2007-11-29 Thread Carolina de la Guardia

Hello all,

As the list is quiet I take the occasion to tell you that next 9th.
Dec., will take place the annual Lace Day Event in l'Arboç
(Barcelona-Spain).

It is one of the 3 most important lace events in Catalunya.

This week I assisted to the commemoration of the twentieth anniversary
of the Catalonian Lace Guild.
It was an emotive action where the foundational members were invited
and honored with a commemorative pin. We all had too, the opportunity
to know
that in the Lace Museum of l'Arboç, the days 7th, to 9th. Dec. there
will be an interesting exhibition of jewels made with lace.

I was told that firstly, it is made a Roseground or Point de Paris
stitch lace sheet by the lacemaker and then the jeweler cuts little
bands or strips and frame them with a gold profile. I have seen nice
pendants, bracelets and rings in gold and white gold very very nice.
Of course I'll go, and if it is allowed I shall take some pictures to
share with you.

Regards.

This idea sounds absolutely exquisite! Even if you cannot take pictures, you
will let us know about your visit to the lace museum and exhibit?
Please and thankyou!

Janice (and others),

I can guess why the archives don't show your messages. You are
addressing them to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (the same goes for all you
people who send messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and mess up my
filters! ;-) ). Majordomo interprets the address as an alias for
Arachne and shows it on the list but www.mail-archive.com thinks it's
a different list. So correct your address books, everyone (or stop
hitting 'reply' if you're getting digest--most email programs these
days will let you type in the first 3 letters of an address and
automatically fill in the rest), and then the archives will be less
confused.

Computers are only human, after all. g

As for why there are no digests, it has been quiet lately.

[lace] quiet list, but productive on lace

2007-04-24 Thread Beth Mccasland
Gentle Spiders,
I took a wee bit of advantage having to take time off from work to meet a
contractor for some needed bathroom repairs (not Katrina related, but 45
year old house related), and worked on my gold thread lace project.
Actually got some inches made, so at least something was accomplished for
the afternoon. To repair the water damage from the leak around the tub
they'll have to completely gut my bathroom... and it's a one bathroom
house. Tamara's pocket snake would have seized and died on hearing the
approximate cost to do the repairs. Next monday is contractor #2.

I still haven't written the museum in Stockholm to see if I can get more
information on the little 16th century doll I'm trying to recreate. I've
been busy on the lace and other stuff.

I haven't yet used silk but shall be tempted soon I think, what sort of grid

most commonly one used. I know there are others out there who use all sorts
of threads other than that, but that name is sticking in my head as being
more commonly seen.

Very quiet today. . I guess everyone is
just busy elsewhere.

The silk used

was fairly thick, 3-4 times thicker than Guitermann
100/3, and with a loose twist. I have very few silk
threads, other than the 100/3.

2007-03-04 Thread Cindy Rusak

Hi Alice,

I purchased some silk from Pipers a few years ago and their '90 Silk Floss'
seems to me to be very similar to the silk used for Maltese lace. I found
the pale cream was almost a perfect match for some of my Maltese lace,
however I do realize that not all Maltese lace is the same shade. The silk
floss also comes 'folded', i.e. you can order how many plies you need to
match your thickness of thread.

I have some Maltese lace that needs repair as well so if you have any tips
or techniques for me please pass them on.

Good luck,

I can double or triple the thread when I use it, so
size is less important than the look and feel, but a

Any ideas?

Alice - do you think you can send me a good photo of the collar. I do have
the type of silk thread we use in Malta and can definitely send you some. A
picture will help me to determine what kind of thread it is. If it is
thicker than the one I use I can always ask one of my friends for some of
the thicker type - which is thicker and untwisted. The only problem is the
colour. The silk (which I very much doubt is pure silk) tends to yellow with
age.

[lace] quiet list - NY visit

Well, dear Spiders,

Here I am on my last night NY city, won't mention the margheritas consumed
this evening !! At least 7 hours a day (for the past 3 days)
wandering around NY. Managed to fit in a visit to the Museum of Art and
Design, and saw the wonderful exhibit Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting
- it was fantastic - loved it. My top 3 were (in no particular order) the
knitted figure craft kills, with knitting needles stabbing through the
body; the tatted circular table cloth with gorgeous 3D skulls attached all
around; and the tiny knitted garments - 2 jumpers (pull-overs/sweaters?) and
a pair of gloves, knitted using medical wire, absolutely amazing. Loved it,
loved it, loved it. Yes, a broad definition of lace and lace-making,
but PLEASE let's keep lace-making alive

tomorrow - 20 hours!!!)

[lace] Quiet list

2005-05-08 Thread Jane Partridge
Have we just all run out of steam or is the list unusually quiet at the
moment? We have had a week of our anti-virus fighting off several
hundred spam emails (from the same domain) a day and I wondered if
anyone else was getting this - the messages apparently contained a worm
- and of course, the ones we wanted to receive were usually last in the
queue to download! DH has reported the abuse, and it seems to have got
less today. Other than that, and a twisted ankle last weekend (much
better now, but I've decided housework is dangerous!) not much seems to
be happening.

One thing I was alerted to in the week was that apparently Margaret
Wall's husband is selling some of her bobbins on Ebay - one of my
students has bought a couple. For those who don't know, Margaret Wall
paints some wonderful bobbins, but they were nearly always out of my
price range so I think I've only bought one or two from her in the last
fifteen years. I got the impression from what my student said that this
was an ongoing thing rather than a one off.

Re: [lace] Quiet list

2005-05-08 Thread Clay Blackwell
No, this is not the Christina with the revolving skirt. This pillow
looks nearly identical to a Swedish pillow I own, which is a wonderful
pillow. The one on ebay is larger than mine, and the extra roller is a
very nice thing to have! The shipping is quite expensive, as would be
expected.

I've heard various reports about the true Christina with the revolving
skirt. Holly VanSciver tells me that the cost to*her* now is $800, and I
think that shipping has to be added to that! She is reluctant to stock any
at this price.OTOH, friends in Europe have been unable to get an answer
from anyone who can tell them whether the pillows are still being made.
Evidently, they were all made by one man, and he finally retired from the
business. The story goes that long searching, a younger man was found who
was willing to make the pillows again. But as is often the case, they're
just not the same as the originals. But so far, I haven't been able to
track down the source of these newer Christinas - if they do exist!!

And on another note, some owners of original Christinas have reached the
stage where they are not able to make lace any more, for one reason or
another, and they are finding that there is a market for old Christinas in
good condition... and at prices that may equal or exceed what was
originally spent for the pillow!! So if you have one of these pillows and
would like to cash in on your investment, now may be a good time to do it!!

But not you, Barb!! You've got too much lace to make yet!! ; )

Other than that, and a twisted ankle last weekend (much
better now, but I've decided housework is dangerous!)

Oh, yes, housework is much too dangerous for a twisted ankle! You
definitely need to rest it and make lace. BG I guess my virus
