[lace-chat] Bobbins As Decor

2013-08-13 Thread Adele Shaak
I recently moved to a new neighbourhood, and today as I walked through the
local shopping area I took a look in the Farrow Ball store. I think of FB as
an expensive paint store, but they've expanded and are carrying other luxury
home items, like tea towels and hand-dipped candles imported from Europe.

Way in the back I came across a display of old needlework tools, and a jar full
of completely serviceable midlands bobbins, which I was told are made in Wales.
They're decorated, unspangled but drilled for spangling and not too expensive
at $6.50, if you just wanted a few or wanted to make a present.

Thought I'd mention it as I know in North America it's usually a lot easier to
find a Farrow Ball store than a lace supplies dealer. But I don't know if all
the stores carry them.

Hi:

Farrow and Ball is an English company - started in the 1930s in Wimborne
Minster, Dorset (according to Wikipedia). But now it has grown and is quite
international. I looked on their website - they have a store locator that will
tell you where their stores are in about 30 countries. The US store locator is
on the US website at http://us.farrow-ball.com/ They have lots of locations in
the States but I don't think any are in Wyoming.

Adele

Adele, is Farrow Ball a Canadian chain? I have never heard of it here in
 the States.

Re: [lace-chat] bobbins

2009-10-23 Thread Sue
I rarely have more than one pillow/project going at a time, I find I need to
concentrate on it to its conclusion.Occasionally if I am working on a
bigger project and want to try out a tiny piece work with one of the domed
pillows and complete it then back to the original.
I do have strips of lace intended for projects which are an idea but dont
always get made up (but better to have them in good condition and they can
be put together when the right occasion arrives). I have little motifs in
my folder I wanted to work the pattern but dont have an end use (but again
they are there to be converted into gifts as and when).
I used to keep a list of the pairs of bobbins given to me as gifts during my
first few years lacemaking, but haven't counted them recently. I probably
have 200 - 300 bobbins, (maybe more but I haven't counted in a very long
time, all midlands and a batch of 20 large continentals (for use on russian
or other tape).
Trouble is my favourite are the ones that take the most thread and I use and
reuse them all the time. Still it means I do one piece at a time, :-)

I'll admit to having 3 lace projects currently on the go - involving
around 600 bobbins between them. One Binche, which I haven't touched since
Sweet Briar when Bobbi Donnelly got me hooked on a Tønder piece. This
latter piece has about 10 repeats and a corner to go before being
completed, which I plan to do while demonstrating at the Chicago Botanic
Garden over 6th, 7th and 8th November. So I have put it away till then, as
I need something to do while at the Fine Art of Fiber. So then I started a
piece of Bucks. I don't usually have this many lace UFOs around the place.

Lots and lots and lots and lots, but I'd rather make lace than stop to

bobbins still on them - lots and lots and lots of them too.

I tend to be better about Lace UFOs than other kinds... I have several
quilt-tops that are completed, but need to be quilted, for example. I
have a four or five knitting projects in the current knitting basket
(with numerous others put away years ago!). I don't keep lace UFOs
because they tie up pillows and bobbins... if I'm not happy enough with
something to work it to the end, I cut it off and move on.

I have two projects on pillows at the moment... one is Binche and takes
all the concentration I can muster, and the other is a 's Gravensmoer
scarf, which is something I can do in my sleep now, after doing nearly
52 inches of it. When I've worked the Binche until my brain hurts, then
the 's G is a relaxing alternative!

And like Malvary, I'd rather make lace than count bobbins! Lots and
lots is a good description! Binche, Midlands, Bayeux, Brugges, Honiton,
antique in that order

What a disappointment, I only just got the digest that included the bobbin
drawing today, November 24th. One day after the drawing. :-( I would have
loved to be in this drawing.

Please would Arachne members who are generous
enough to offer a raffle allow time for us to receive the digests before doing
the drawings. The digest are not coming very often when the list is quiet.
This digest was sent on Thursday at 10:05 pm so would not have arrived in time
for the draw even if I had lived in England. Our previous digest was last
Sunday, so you can see how long they are taking to come these days.

From the look of the 1st Anniversary bobbin, I would say that it's a
Margaret Wall bobbin. The Lace Guild could easily have ordered its bobbins
from the same maker.

And...No, there is no Arachne Membership Bobbin that I've heard of. We do
have a membership pin. JoAnn, are there any left?

there is no Arachne Membership Bobbin that I've heard of.

Technically, we aren't 'members' we are 'subscribers' to the arachne
e-mail list(s). However: Several bobbin makers/suppliers have had
bobbins for arachne, aside from the anniversary bobbins which was an idea
from the first year, and have been made each year since, by various
painters, after discussion - usually now by JoAnne herself (hi JoAnne).

I got a 'list bobbin' painted by Jacqui Southworth, with my e-mail addy

[lace-chat] bobbins for beginner

2005-06-20 Thread Helene Gannac
Dear Ronna,

Without wanting to dampen your enthusiam, I would say that your main problem is
that you want to do too many things at once as a beginner! Goodness me, I'd
never heard of a beginner wanting to try 6 different types of lace when they
had only just started learaning !! No wonder it's costing you a fortune!

All the laces you mention except torchon are fairly demanding, and if you don't
have the basic techniques at your fingertips, you will drown in conflicting
instructions, as some things are not made in exactly the same way in different
laces.

However, if you really want to try all those things at once, just buy some
fairly straight bobbins, made of heavy woods, not pine, with a pointy rather
than rounded end, so you can use them for different kinds of lace. Honiton,
Withof and Milanese don't require many bobbins, in Honiton and Withof, you keep
starting and cutting,(which in itself is difficult for a beginner), and
Milanese is a tape lace, so you only use 10-15 pairs, usually, particularly for
beginner's pieces.
The main thing is that spangled bobbins are awkward to use in those laces,
because you keep having to do sewings i.e. catching one of the threads with a
crochet hook to get it through a bit you've already made so that the lace holds
together. As long as your bobbins are slightly pointed at the end, you should
be able to use them for any lace. Just because some parts of the world had
different types of bobbins from others doesn't mean that we can't make that
lace with the bobbins we have!! I did a Rosaline(kind of Withof workshop with
spangled bobbins, once, because I didn't have any others, and I didn't want to
spend money on some I knew I wouldn't use much after. It worked, it was just
awkward to pull the thread through, but with a bit of care, I managed OK. And
my teacher didn't blast me off either, she just accepted that I only had those
bobbins.

My suggestion would be to stick to one type of lace until you can feel you are
fairly confident in it, and then do workshops in other types of laces, to see
which ones you really like. If you feel Honiton is your thing, go ahead and buy
Honiton bobbins and thread, and have lessons, but don't spend all your money
buying various things which you may never want to use again after one try!! I
did one workshop in Beds (with my torchon bobbins), and decided it was not my
cup of tea at all. If I had bought all the supplies plus all the books
specially for it, it would have been a complete waste of money.
As for books, I suggest you join a local lacemakers's group. Most of them have
a library where you can borrow books. A lot cheaper than trying to buy all at
once, when you don't even know whether they are good or not.
This is my comment about your problems. I hoep you find what you want, and
above all, that you keep making lace, which is the most important!!
Best of luck,

Helene, the froggy from Melbourne

Hello all,
I have a beginners question about supplies. I have only one style of bobbin
right now, I don't know what it is called. It has no spangles, a double head
and
square base (so it doesn't roll too much). I am going to the convention and
have
Hointon and Withoff classess.
My list of supplies for Hointon has not arrived yet, but my Withoff one has. It

asks for Binche or Fine Belgium bobbins 40 of them. I am wondering if I will
absolutely have to purchase new bobbins for this or if mine could be used ( I
will need the hointon bobbins from what I understand) I am a beginner so the
cost
of setting up is extraordinary. I would make my own bobbins if I had the time
and deminsions. (I turn wood on a lathe, but I am not speedy at it).
I want to purchase a large number of books and I am reeling at the sudden cost.

I have pins, 2 pillows and a picker and pin puller, I even have a magnifier and

sone holders for the bobbins so they don't shift when put away on the pillow. I

have about three books so far, but only on Torchon and Milanese.
Any tips on cost cutting or prioritizing what I need? My husband is near painic

as I start listing what I want. Since I did not know about the conviention till

this year I have not set asside for the cost so spreading out the cost and
prioritizing is very important for now.
Also if I have typos, please forgive - I can't find my glasses.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

[lace-chat] Bobbins on eBay

2005-05-11 Thread Carol Adkinson
Hi All,

There was a report of some of Margaret Wall's bobbins on eBay several days
ago, and there are now some more of Heather Power's painted bobbins - one of
the numbers is 8191313136 - the others are the two just above it. The
bobbins are made by Stuart Johnson and painted by Heather - and I did wonder
whether the seller was, in fact, Heather - the sellers ID is Heather . and
the location is Oxford, so the mind was ticking!

But - they are beautiful, and the 'Buy it Now' prices seem very reasonable -
lovely additions to anyone's collection, so if anyone bids, Good Luck.

Dear Nicky,
Anyway my question is the lady bought some bobbins in a shop there
Criterion Drapery Stores, Sovereign Hill, and very nice they are to, but
she has no idea who made them, the lad in the shop didn't even know what
they were so she thought asking who made them might be pushing it, they
both have a little disc attached by wire through the spangling hole with
what looks like a crown logo on it.Can anyone tell me who made these
bobbins please?
The bloke who used to make the bobbins for Sovereign Hill (reconstructed
gold mining town) was Graeme JOHNSON, who is now in his early 60s, but
sadly, has developed Altzheimers about 2 years ago and unless these are old
stock (about 6 years old) then they're not his.
Another bobbin maker in Ballarat is Keith HUGHES, but his bobbins are quite
distinctive in that they are highly polished with bees wax and very short
(because his wife has little hands he told me).
There is another bloke who lives out at Mt. Clear (about 8km south) who
only started about 2 years ago. I just forget his name off hand, but can
certainly find out for you.
Regards
David in Ballarat
