Everyone,
I know there has been an increase in SPAM posting to our mailing lists.
There is little I can do to change the situation other than making our
lists member only. This will not fix the problem as there are scripts to
join Mailman lists and post SPAM.

note: less than 5% of the SPAM I see as list manager successfully
posts to our lists.

The SF.net staff is working on a more permanent solution to the problem
at the MTA level.

State of the SourceForge.net Site and Services: UBE/UCE/Spam
https://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=17790&group_id=1#spam

In the meantime please don't respond to SPAM that posts to our mailing
lists. It just makes more work for me. Thanks.

Re: [leaf-user] Bering 1.2 Driver Module Compile

2003-08-14 Thread Joey Officer
It appears that you are looking at the disk release, I don't have the
tarball in front of me, but .. one sec..

8139too.o is in /2.4.20/kernel/drivers/net

I don't know what additional files you need, but it should work.. grab the
modules tarball and decompress, then goto that directory, the file is
there...

Since 192.168.1.0/16 and 192.168.231.0/16 are the same network
(192.168.0.0/16), I think that Ray meant to type "192.168.1.0/24" and

[leaf-user] BUSINESS TRANSACTION IN THE NETHERLANDS

2003-08-14 Thread David Evans
Dear friend,

I write to seek your participation in a transaction
that would be of mutual benefit to both of us. Before
I proceed with my proposal to you, let me introduce
myself. My name is David Evans, I am an admin
officer, working with a diplomatic security company in
Amsterdam, The Netherlands. My duty involves
administrative documentation of deposits in the
company.

In the course of one of my daily routines of stock
taking, I had noticed that there had been a particular
deposit/consignment in the company that has been
dormant for the past 7 years, which no one had since
come forth for. To this effect, late last year, I
began making some private investigations to ascertain
the beneficiary, the nature and other relevant
information of the deposit/consignment.

I found out that the beneficiary of the deposit had
since passed on 3 years ago. Upon going through the
deposit form as filled by the beneficiary at the time
of deposit, the beneficiary did not state or fill out
any next of kin, in case of his death. This eventually
leave the deposit dormant till date.

However, most stunning was my further investigation to
ascertain the content of the deposit. I discovered
that the consignment was filled with cash of dollar
bills. Judging from the weight and size of the
consignment, I have calculated and approximated the
amount of cash in it to be about US$25M. All these are
known to only me here in the company.

Now, I seek your assistance/partnership to claim the
said consignment from the company and split the cash
between us in a ratio that would be negotiated between
us. This of course, is subject to your acceptance to
participate in this transaction. Please note that by
virtue of my designation in the company, I have worked
out the perfect modality as well as provide
the relevant information/documentation for the
successful claim of the consignment. Be rest assured
that the transaction carry's no risk whatsoever. In
this regard and in order to keep it risk free, I
expect you should be able to keep the transaction
highly confidential.

Please acknowledge or indicate your resolve on the
above transaction.
Upon my receipt of a resolve from you, I shall furnish
you with in-depth details of this transaction as well as my
private telephone number here in the Netherlands but in the
interim communicate with me through an e mail.

Perhaps, I should go further by informing you that the security company that I
work with is affiliated to a finance home thereby making it more easier for us
to transfer the funds to your
designated bank account. That is after you may have finalized all the necessary
steps.
Best Regards,
DAVID EVANS.

hello:

I have recently tried adding serial console support to my Bering 1.0 LEAF

aslo have my package list in a "lrpkg.cfg" file, not in the "syslinux.cfg"
file.
Anyway, I followed the instructions in the Bering user's manual for serial
line support, specifically I added the "serial 0 19200" and "append=.."
lines to syslinux.cfg
Now, when i boot the system and try to use LRCFG and go to packages (choice
3), the package list only list one thing - "initrd". the other packages all
appear to load, and they firewall seems to be ok in all other respects.
How do you switch from floppy1 to floppy2 without a console?

when i look at "/var/lib/lrpkg/packages" i do not see a list of packages
anymore. there is only one line "Installed - root /dev/fd0 etc /dev/fd0
." (sorry about this quote, it may not be exact, but what it looks like
is the output you see when the OS starts to load the packages during the
boot up process).
What do you see in '/var/lib/packages/backdisk'?

if i replace the syslinux.cfg file with the original one, the lrcfg, and
package list files return to normal, and all the packages are listed.
Please provide us with the details of syslinux.cfg and lrpkg.cfg (and
differences of course :-) )

Ping does set the DF flag bit, so you're hitting the MTU
limit of your PPPoE link.
Okay - so why does ping do that? Is there a reason for this - it
confuses diagnostics I'd think.
It would be even more confusing if ping requests/replies got fragmented,
if you think about it (what would happen if only part of a fragment got
to the other end?).

> Hope one of you gurus can help.
I don't have a clear picture of your network topology, but it
ClientLan---FW1--ISP---internet---ISP
--FW2---ServerLan
FW1 has VPN link to FW2 with MTU 1350

you're running into two different MTU problems. The limited
MTU of your
PPPoE link (which it sounds like you have solved), and the
Yes, I'd like to think so too.

MTU of your
IPSec link (which may or may not be going over the PPPoE
connection for
an additional "haircut"...that part isn't clear from the above).
Uhmm, there aren't any problems on the VPN link internally. Everything
works fine from/to ClientLan and ServerLan.
It's when doing the SNAT things are fouled up.

A client wants to do a HTTP connection to FW1's external IP. This is
SNAT'ed to a server on ServerLan, so the server sees the request as
coming from ClientLan (the only way the routing back to the client could
be made to work). So the packet arrives at FW1, which changes the source
to a ClientLan address and the destination to a ServerLan address and
pumps it down the VPN tunnel. The problem is that large packets never
get through to the other end, because they're too large for either the
IPSEC og PPPoE link.
It seems like packets from the internet that don't fit down
your IPSec
pipe aren't properly getting ICMP messages back to the sender
(ie PMTU
discovery is broken for the specific case of inbound PPPoE
traffic that
heads back out the IPSec link).
Bingo.

Provide a diagram of how your network is setup, and maybe I
(or someone
else) will have some ideas on how to get things working properly.
I was hoping to hear from you, as you seem to have great insight on
networking on this list. Thanks for responding.
My first suggestion is to use the public IP of FW2 (the serverlan
firewall) rather than FW1 (the privatelan firewall) for your public
services. As constructed, you're running public traffic across your
PPPoE link twice, as well as doubling up on tunneling protocols (IPSec
wrapped inside PPPoE).

If you have to keep things the way they are for some reason, it sounds
like the ICMP error messages created when a large packet comes in from
the internet to FW1 and gets routed down the VPN either aren't getting
generated, or are going to the wrong place.

A packet sniffer might be of some help with solving this problem. You
can compare the traces of working and non-working pings from the
internet to your SNAT'd server.

If you continue to have problems, I might be able to help if you provide
a full dump of your firewall rules, routing tables, and interface setup,
but you'll probably need someone more familiar with Bering, IPTables,
and shorewall (I'm still stuck in the 2.2 kernel era with Dachstein and
IPChains).

[leaf-user] Sincere request, please reply

2003-08-14 Thread Jonson Tubman
Dear friend,

This letter may come to you as a surprise due to the fact that we have not yet met,
but kindly consider the message, because, I am determined to live for posterity.

I wish to plead with you to join me in not only serving humanity, but
to also benefit in the process. This message could be strange but reality will
definitely dawn on you, if you pay some attention to its contents.
Please accept my sincere apologies. In bringing this message to you, I have to
say that I have no intention of causing you any personal pains or discomfort.
I am Mr. Jonson Tubman, former Special Assistant to the Liberian President,
Mr. Charles Taylor, who is facing the fight of his life with rebels who want to
overthrow his government. President Charles Taylor, in his bid to fend-off rebel
insurgency, and since he could no longer trust the army generals, confidentially
put in my care, the sum of $18,000,000.00 (eighteen million United States dollars)
in one instance for the purpose of purchasing arms and ammunitions should the
need arise. But unfortunately, the need did not arise as he is going on exile.
I deposited the US$18million in a trunk box in a secret location and just the two of us
knew about it, and I could not get in touch with any arms dealer before the President
was indicted in a war crime tribunal set up by the United Nations (UN). I have since
held on to this trunk box, which I was able to transport out of Liberia with the aid
of peace keeping soldiers under the guise of conveying my personal effects without
anybody knowing, to a security deposit company.

I am presently in Africa, where I now work as a consultant on inter-regional
co-operation. I have borne the burden for too long. I do not want to keep the
funds any longer, but I can never turn it over to the brutal and tyrannical
rogue regime of Mr. Charles Taylor who is still committing all sorts of atrocities
on the liberian people. I am NOT solicitng for your help to wage a war against the
regime, but to act as a foreign partner, to allow me transfer the funds to you,
and YOU, in turn, would donate a portion of it as a humanitarian gesture to the
Liberian people by purchasing such essential needs like blankets, milk and so on,
water-pumping machines and agricultural equipment, from the money after deducting your
expenses and the commission of 20%.

Please note that I could have approached the Red Cross Society, but I changed my mind
on that after calculating what they would deduct as comission, and also, after
rationalising the scandal that followed their mismanagement of the donations meant for
the victims of the September 11th attack on the United States.

Also note that this offer will give you a double-edged advantage :
1. as the benefactor of the Liberian people and;
2. the commission you stand to earn.

On getting a positive response from you, I will send to you the secret access codes to
the funds and the security and vault company. Please note that confidentiality and
honesty are fundamental rules in this transaction. Be assured that I am a reputable
personality in this country and I am mindful of the legal implications of this
transaction,
as I intend taking care of all the legal documentations for a successful and hitch-free
transaction. You will be expected to take delivery of this fund personally from the
deposit
company in Europe.

I am therefore soliciting your assistance to have this money collected by you and/or
facilitate the transfer into your nominated account(s).
***PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR CONFIDENTIALITY IN THIS TRANSACTION IS HIGHLY REQUIRED.
I will give you the details of this transactionon receipt of your response to
this proposal. Thank you very much for your time and understanding.

Yours sincerely,

Mr. Jonson Tubman

[leaf-user] Ann: Bering-uClibc 2.0 beta2

2003-08-14 Thread K.-P. Kirchdörfer
The Bering-uClibc team released today Bering-uClibc 2.0 beta2.

Most notable are the updates of shorewall to version 1.4.5 and 6wall to 1.0.1,
some (mostly smaller) fixes and a lot of cleanup work, especially with using
latest busybox version 1.0-pre3 (cvs).

The kernel patches added, provide better support for Soekris boxes and solves
a log problem with ppp/pppoe and ulogd.

For a complete Changelog please read:
http://leaf.sourceforge.net/mod.php?mod=userpage&menu=91003&page_id=39

Please note: We tested the security patch mentioned in
http://www.netfilter.org/security/2003-08-01-nat-sack.html
but it occured that it makes Bering-uClibc very unstable.
We're going to work on a solution.

As usual you can download the image plus a ipv6 drop-in on:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=13751

Additionally you'll find the sources, hints to compile your own image and
packages in the LEAF cvs repository on sourceforge.net.

Bug reports, questions, success stories, heads-up are welcome.

Thanks for your attention.

PROPOSAL
   --
I got your contact from a reliable source and I decided to contact you on a mutual
business relationship. My name is Mr Roy Taylor the son of president Charles Taylor
of Liberia who is presently having problems with the rebels and is been forced out of
office. If you are current with the news you will know what I am talking about.

It is because of these problems that I have the mandate of my father to contact you
and request you specifically to assist my family to secure the deposit that my father
has with a financial institution in Europe which amounts to ($35,000,000)thirty five
million US dollars. This is because my father knows that immediately the new government
takes over, all his wealth and properties will be brought to book and might be
confisticated.

It is base on this fact that I am requesting you to assist us in putting this sum of
money in safe keeping by accepting to receive it from the financial institution on our
behalf by changing the name and signatory of the account into yours so that it will
not have any link to my family and for that reason, the incoming governments(the
rebels) will not find it.

I will furnish you the details of this transaction if
you accept to assist. For your efforts we will discuss
what remuneration I will give you when you reply.

Because of the urgency this issue requires, you
should reach me on the above e-mail addresses. Do not
forget to include your telephone and fax numbers while
replying to this message.

I wait for your quick response.

  Best regards.

I am not familiar with any specific versions of "beep", because I never
scratched that itch.

However, I do know that sending Ctrl-G to most ANSI-compatible terminals
is supposed to generate an audible signal. The virtual TTYs used for
consoles in Linux support this, and apparently also support ioctl calls to
activate this feature. Thus, it appears that your "beep" program is
expecting you to use one of the normal virtual terminals.

I can think of two possible directions to proceed from here... one is to
use existing or newly incorporated features (via modifying and recompiling
the source?) of the "beep" program to specify one of the virtual terminals
for the ioctl call (and set its permissions to support such non-owner
access if necessary), or to simply return to sending a Ctrl-G at whatever
terminal emulator you are using and pay attention to the beep from the
terminal machine instead of from the router... for example:

 # echo -e "\a"

There was apparently a "bootbeep.lrp" file floating around awhile ago that
included this in a late-firing init script.

If you don't want to rely on a terminal emulator to be connected, then you
may be able to redirect the Ctrl-G to one of the virtual terminals, like:

 # echo -e "\a" >/dev/tty1

(no permissions problem since you are probably running as root).

If you have eliminated the virtual terminals from your kernel, you might
be able to find one of the "beep" kernel modules and add it to create a
device you can poke at to get noise.

[leaf-user] How to upgrade from old release

2003-08-14 Thread Angilberto Muniz Sb
Vladimir,

Is there any way to upgrade from -- lets say --
wdist-2546 to wdist-2624 on the field?

I mean, do I HAVE to bring my soekris 4511 down, take
out the CFlash, reload the new release put the CF back
and re-seat the CPE on the roof?

Or is there some trick to transfer the image to
ramdisk, umount the CF, dd the ramdisk to CF, re-mount
the CF or something like that...

Thank you,

Angilberto.

[leaf-user] rtl8139 unresolved symbol pci_register

2003-08-14 Thread Phil Moors

Hi,

I have a LEAF firewall running on Oxygen that I'm trying to switch over to
Bering 1.2. I can't get the rtl8139 driver to load. I've tried loading the
mii.o module and that doesn't help. I've seen references to a pci-scan
module on this mailing list, however, it isn't included in the modules
tar-ball. I do see pci_scan_bus and friends in /proc/ksyms though I don't
know if it's related.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Phil

You mean Windows users using the Internet as "network neighborhood"?
I'm not too familiar with Windows hosts connected to the Internet
through modem/isdn/dsl/..., so what you say may be correct.

I interpreted Windows traffic coming from the Internet as part of a scan
always. So there would be no need to be friendly. If this traffic is
generated by accident in most cases the default of rejecting would be
justified.

[leaf-user] (no subject)

2003-08-14 Thread chris le

I've been attempting to do QoS with Dachstein CD/Floppy.

When enabled, my connection to my cable modem doesn't seem to go out to the internet
anywhere. Pinging Google.com falls flat. I assume it worked for some. Considering
that the LRP QoS HOWTO works under the assumption that you are using EigerStein which
is one release before Dachstein.

Here are the steps that I've taken:

1. Find out what version my LRP is running:
# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.2.19-3-LEAF-RAID ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 2.7.2.3) #4 Sat Dec
1 17:27:59 CST 2001

1. According to LRP QoS HOWTO (http://www.monkeynoodle.org/lrp/LRP-QoS-HOWTO.html)
I've downloaded the nessessary kernel modules (I left out the ones that I didn't need,
like sch_teql for load balancing). They were downloaded from
http://lrp.steinkuehler.net/files/kernels/2.2.19-3-RAID/modules/misc/ to match my LRP.

2. Copied them to /lib/modules, and added the following lines to /etc/modules:
# qos stuff
sch_cbq
sch_prio
sch_sfq
cls_route
cls_fw
cls_u32
cls_rsvp

3. Rebooted and ran LSMOD:
# lsmod

cdrom 26712 0 [ide-cd]

So far so good...

4. The bwidth22.lrp package was already found on the CD, so I added the appropriate
line to lrpkg.cfg on the floppy disk.

# cat lrpkg.cfg
bwidth22,dhclient,dhcpd,dnscache,etc,ifconfig,lncurses,libm, ...

5. Edited the /etc/network.conf file as follows:

IF_AUTO="eth0 eth1"
eth0_FAIRQ=YES
#eth0_TXQLEN=262144
#eth0_BNDWIDTH=128kbit # Device bandwidth
#eth0_HNDL=2# Queue Handle - must be unique
#eth0_IABURST=100 # Interactive Burst
#eth0_IARATE=1Mbit # Interactive Rate
#eth0_PXMTU=1514# Physical MTU - includes Link Layer header
eth1_FAIRQ=YES

(fyi, i calculated TXQLEN to be max upstream transmit queue length for 1 second as
recommended by monkeynoodle.)

Note, I commented the eth0 lines out because according to monkeynoodle, the defaults
should be sufficient for a small home network.

When restarting the system, the LRP grabbed an IP via DHCP from the cable modem fine,
but when I got to a command prompt, and type "ping google.com" nothing would happen.
I also tried the command "route" just to see what would happen, and it would get stuck.

I've tried several other solutions, such as using different LRP distributions, but I
found that I'm currently most comfortable with Dachstein. I've been attacking this
problem for at least a month.

Does anyone have any idea how to properly get this working?

-chris.

[leaf-user] Last package won't load (Bering v 1.2 on CD)

2003-08-14 Thread Jeremy A Tourville
Ok, I've followed the directions regarding creating a lrpkg.cfg file and
when the CD boots I get a *.lrp (nf!) error. I've tried to add a
carriage return at the end of the lrpkg.cfg file and still no luck. I've
tried switching the order the packages load in and it makes no
difference, the last package listed is the one that will not load.

My isolinux.cfg is as follows:
display syslinux.dpy
timeout 0
default linux initrd=initrd.lrp init=/linuxrc rw root=/dev/ram0
boot=/dev/cdrom:iso9660 PKGPATH=/dev/cdrom:iso9660

My lrpkg.cfg file is as follows:
root,etc,local,modules,iptables,shorwall,ulogd,dnscache,weblet,dhcpd,libm
,ntpsimpl,libz,ntpdate,sshd

I've tried to search the archives and that is what gave me the carriage
return idea. Are there any other configuration files that could override
the number of packages being loaded? Your input is greatly appreciated.

Jeremy Tourville

[leaf-user] PXE/Etherbooting WISP-DIST ?

2003-08-14 Thread Steve Wright
Hi All,

since WISP-DIST runs read-only off a flash disk, has anyone thought of
PXE booting a box (LTSP style http://ltsp.org ) and having WISP-DIST
install itself into RAM ?

The proceedure should be roughly equivalent to grabbing the packages off
DOM and unpacking them into RamDisk.

Sure, the unit will not be 'standalone' (can't boot by itself) but in
many situations this will make any old POS hardware into a router,
without even a flash module or a floppy..

cheers,
Steve

[leaf-user] Shorewall common.def in Bering 1.2

2003-08-14 Thread Frank Tegtmeyer
Hi,

is there any reason that the Windows ports in common.def are set to
reject instead of DROP?
I like to slow scanners down if possible, so DROP would be the natural
choice.
The only ports where I use reject are ident (to be friendly) and some
annoying P2P ports (to get them stopped faster).

Do you have a period (.) at the end of your lrp line?

Perhaps as a temporary workaround until we figure this out,
insert a bogus
package at the end (ie. bogus.lrp!)

- Bob Coffman
And make sure your lrpkg.cfg is using linux (not MS-DOS)
end-of-lines...the part of the MS-DOS sequence will get
added to your LRP filename and confuse the package loading scripts.

Do you have your lrpkg.cfg on the CD or on floppy? If on floppy probably you
need to add /dev/fd0:msdos after PKGPATH=/dev/cdrom:iso9660 in your
isolinux.cfg.

Did you also try to remove the last package (e.g. sshd) from your lrpkg.cfg
and see if all remaining load?

Please disregard my last response referring you to the Shorewall FAQ --
I missed the part about PPPOE.

For PPPOE, the shorewall part goes something like:

a) add zone 'modem' to /etc/shorewall/zones
b) add a record for "modem eth0 ..." in /etc/shorewall/interfaces
c) add rule "ACCEPT fw modem udp snmp"

May have to add other rules but they should be obvious from looking at
the output of "shorewall show log".

RE: [leaf-user] PARTNERSHIP

2003-08-14 Thread Nick Taylor
Apparently once you start dealing with them, they start asking you
to send them money for various "administrative" overheads.

They promise to reimburse you once the money has been transferred.
As you can guess, they just keep asking for more and more money,
until you finally give up!

They key phrase is:

> WHILE 5% WILL BE FOR EXPENSES BOTH PARTIES MIGHT
> HAVE INCURED DURING THE PROCESS OF TRANSFERING.

5% of 26,000,000 USD is a whopping: 1,300,000 USD!

Greed SIGH!

BTW Why are we getting these on this mailing list? Isn't this a
closed list? If so, surely they can be booted off, as I've noticed
quite a few slipping through recently.

[leaf-user] Access ADSL modem SNMP/Config page

2003-08-14 Thread Adam Niedzwiedzki
Hi guys,

I'm a little confused on how I setup my bering machine to allow me to
access the configuration page on my ADSL modem.
I have 2 nic's in my bering box with eth0 directly connected to my
netcomm NB1300 modem. (via ethernet crossover cable).
I followed the user guide on setting up PPPOE,
http://leaf.sourceforge.net/doc/guide/bupppoe.html
I can add an IP to my DSL modem but how do I setup bering to allow me to
access the IP from my internal lan.
eth1 has static IP: 10.0.10.1 I put 10.0.10.2 on the ADSL modem, but I
know without additional config with bering I can't access it.

I gather I need to put the IP on the modem and the eth0 nic on a
different subnet, but how do I configure the firewall/bering to allow me
access to the modem?

thanks in advance
Adam

Given that you have the above-mentioned modules loaded and you have the
normal loc->net policy of ACCEPT, ftp should work. I'd look at the
session on ppp0 with tcpdump - either capture to a file and analyze with
ethereal or snarf enough of the data packets to see the control
connection: (e.g., "tcpdump -Xni ppp0 -s 2048 host 192.168.1.100 and
port 21" )

I think I see my mistake - common.def is applied to all traffic on all

So the reject is choosen to be friendly to internal users, right?

Re: [leaf-user] Compile ADM8211 Linux driver

2003-08-14 Thread Erich Titl

Actually any Linux system with an appropriate gcc compiler should do.
Kernels can be cross compiled.
If you are interested I have a Makefile which makes compiling a Bering
kernel a piece of cake. It's still quite beta but works in my environment
which is an old patched up SuSe 6.3 with 2.2.18 :-)

You will need at least a Debian filesystem should you want to compile
userland programs. If you don't want to install UML you can use the
chrooted environment from Lynn Avants

[leaf-user] Bering 1.2 Driver Module Compile

2003-08-14 Thread Phil Moors

I'm going to compile the 8139too driver since it isn't included in the
modules tar-ball. Instead of building a completely new Bering disk, I'd
like to compile the module to be compatible with the binary distribution.
However, I can't find a .config file to set this up. The 1.1 version has
developer documentation that has instructions on setting this up and also
has a broken link to download the config file for the 1.1 version.

Feel free to just point me to the correct documentation.

Thanks,

Phil

Thanks,

Sorry. My bad. The previous post was a listing from the binary disk. This
is a listing from the modules tar-ball.

3c59x.o hostap_crypt.o intel-gige.o pci-scan.osundance.o
8390.o hostap_crypt_wep.o myson803.oprism2_pci.o tulip.o
eepro100.o hostap.onatsemi.o prism2_plx.o via-rhine.o
epic100.o hostap_pci.ons820.o rtl8139.o winbond-840.o
hamachi.o hostap_plx.op80211.o starfire.oyellowfin.o

The rtl8139 is here but does not work for me.

For the moment it is very difficult to make an upgrade from diferent

My best bet is: Start with a new floppy.

As I recall, rtl8139.o requires pci-scan, but 8139too.o requires mii.o

Pci-scan must be loaded before rtl8139.o.

Hi,

I have a LEAF firewall running on Oxygen that I'm trying to switch over
to Bering 1.2. I can't get the rtl8139 driver to load. I've tried
loading the mii.o module and that doesn't help. I've seen references to
a pci-scan module on this mailing list, however, it isn't included in
the modules tar-ball. I do see pci_scan_bus and friends in /proc/ksyms
though I don't know if it's related.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Phil

2003-08-14 Thread Marc E. Fiuczynski
Vladimir,

Sam Leffler (author of the linux driver for the atheros) mentioned to me
today that it is unstable, though, he has not detailed why this is the case.
Furthermore, it is not clear whether the problem lies within the binary
portion or source portion of the driver, or within the firmware. At any
event, you are likely right in suggesting that it is too early to use
Atheros in production mode.

I would suggest it is too early to think about using Atheros in
production mode. The driver is quite unstable yet, I couldn't
make it run well in AP mode.

Also note that atheros support is included as a separate package,
which you can get from
http://www.hazard.maks.net/wisp-dist/downloads/packages/ .

Do you know if it is possible to change the ping results to make it look
like it's a windows box?
ICMP code in response <> 0 => Unix box

If so would there be any side effects of doing this?
??? I'm confused.

A ping (echo request, ICMP message type 8) should always be answered
with an echo reply (ICMP message type 0).

I don't think even Microsoft's TCP/IP stack has managed to screw this up.

Also, all ICMP echo request/reply messages should have a message code of
0 (although some vendors co-opt the message code for specific services).

Do you have a packet dump of the offending ping traffic?

[leaf-user] new WISP-Dist available

2003-08-14 Thread Vladimir Ivaschenko
Greetings,

After a looong wait, a new public WISP-Dist release has been published
on Sourceforge: WISP-Dist build 2624. Note that you can always find
fresh betas at http://www.hazard.maks.net/wisp-dist/downloads/.

From now on WISP-Dist images are partionless and can be installed on
disks of any size and you don't have to do manual partitioning.
Unfortunately that means that RAM usage is increased by approx. 1 MB;
however this shouldn't be an issue if you have 16+ MB of RAM. Just dd
image to your drive (dd if=wisp-dist_2134_img_wdist.bin
of=/dev/mydisk) and that's it. Please note that this change does not
affect ability to upgrade old WISP-Dist installation in any way. If
you want to save on RAM, you can still do old-style partion-based
installs as described in documentation.

Changelog:

Sun 10 Aug 2003 04:53:49 PM EEST

Released build 2624:

New: initial Atheros support (atheros package)
New: WISP-Dist images are now partionless for easy installation, just
dd them to CF
New: use ext2 instead of minix for disk rw partition - more space is
available
New: support for layer 2 bridging in the configuration interface
New: support for layer 2 bridging in the network scripts
New: automatic WDS configuration if layer 2 bridging is enabled on
Prism wireless cards in AP mode
New: wireless statistics are available through SNMP (.1.3.6.1.4.1.2021
tree)
New: kernel 2.4.20
New: MMS (Windows Media)/tftp/PPTP/SNMP basic/talk/quake3 conntrack+nat
(you may need to uncomment them in /etc/modules)
New: updated PCMCIA
New: new hostap_cs driver
New: update wireless extensions version in 2.4.20
New: DHCP relay; uncomment RCDLINKS and set MASTER_DHCP_SERVER
 in /etc/init.d/dhcrelay to enable it
New: hostapd support; delete /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf and rename
 /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs_hapd.conf.disabled to
/etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs_hapd.conf
New: sample vtun configuration for bridging between tunnel and br0
New: trafshow traffic monitoring utility
New: /sbin/forcedreboot is on RAM disk (for cases when CF/IDE
malfunctions)
New: /var/log is now stored in RAM, can help with unstable CF cards
New: add support for time synchronization
New: add hostap decrease threshold patch, improves throughput with bad
signal
New: ability to apply MAC filter settings immediately

ahh, some fool wants to run VoIP don't they.. h.. And then then
they want to still browse the web, download stuff, so my job is to make
it all work over a 4mbit/sec 11b link.

and then, there are a couple of other scopes running on the same netcs0
interface, plus a pppoe client or two as well..

My problem is, I do not know enough about htb to build this by hand, and
I found htb.init.

I am afraid I do not use many of the menus on my leaf box. The routers
are all configured remotely and automatically from the core. The core
can push a reconfiguration at any router at any time, and the routers
request their entire configuration on boot.

3com cards typically require the use of a configuration program to set
them up before you can use them. Check out the 3com site, or
www.scyld.com which may have a Linux version of the setup program.

[leaf-user] "ioctl: Invalid argument" when using Beep.LRP & console=ttyS0

2003-08-14 Thread freeman
My setup:
   - Bering 1.2 release
   - with ttyS0 as the primary console.
When I invoke the beep utility (with no parms even though it has
defaults that support no specified parms) I get the following error:
   ioctl: Invalid argument

However if I have the regular tty1 as the console (via changes to
syslinux.cfg) then it works fine.

I scoured the net and only came up with
   http://johnath.com/beep/README
which suggested:
   chmod 4755 beep
but that doesn't help any. Is there a way to have the main console be
ttyS0 _and_ use the beep utility, or am I totally SOL?

Thanks for any help,
scott

[leaf-user] package list problem

2003-08-14 Thread Theodore Wynnychenko
hello:

I have recently tried adding serial console support to my Bering 1.0 LEAF
box. This is a dual floopy setup, and loads in a number of packages so I
aslo have my package list in a "lrpkg.cfg" file, not in the "syslinux.cfg"
file.

Anyway, I followed the instructions in the Bering user's manual for serial
line support, specifically I added the "serial 0 19200" and "append=.."
lines to syslinux.cfg

Now, when i boot the system and try to use LRCFG and go to packages (choice
3), the package list only list one thing - "initrd". the other packages all
appear to load, and they firewall seems to be ok in all other respects.

when i look at "/var/lib/lrpkg/packages" i do not see a list of packages
anymore. there is only one line "Installed - root /dev/fd0 etc /dev/fd0
." (sorry about this quote, it may not be exact, but what it looks like
is the output you see when the OS starts to load the packages during the
boot up process).

if i replace the syslinux.cfg file with the original one, the lrcfg, and
package list files return to normal, and all the packages are listed.

Unfortunately, i don't have my serial console here yet (i have to go get it,
and i have stored away the monitor and keyboard i was using before), so i
can't easily see the messages during boot right now, but will if this may be
of help.

anyway, i am not sure what is wrong. i assume the /var/lib/lrpkg/packages
file is created during startup, but why would adding the "serial" and
"append" lines to the syslinux.cfg change this?

thanks for any help

ted w.

[leaf-user] Spoofed local source IPs on incoming internet packets.

2003-08-14 Thread James Neave
Hello all,

Quick question. With Bering 1.2 now installed here at work, my boss has
asked me if we are protected against people IP spoofing.

No I don't really know much about it. And I don't even see the point of
chaging your source address.

And apart from setting the spoof protect flag to YES, I am unable to
prove that this is not an issue to be worried about.
I can only assume that anything this obvious is already catered for.

A valid assumption, yes?

Thanks,

James.

For the moment it is very difficult to make an upgrade from diferent

My best bet is: Start with a new floppy.

Thank you Luis, Eric and the others.
Eric suggested off-list to overwrite the old 1.2 kernel ( /linux ) with

You probably could have done that with just specifying another download

tell me what you needed to modify. I believe the rload script could be
sufficiently abstract to cover most trivial download methods.

And then i download the package from the ftp server then install it and then
reload init.d. Well as soon i finish it and test i will post it on package.

As its name tries to imply, common.def is the DEFAULT common file. If
you don't like it, create /etc/shorewall/common and put the rules that

[leaf-user] Routing 192.168.231.255

2003-08-14 Thread Whileman, John
Sorry to bother you all, but I don't understand something I'm seeing on
weblet.

On a Dachstien standard floppy distribution, the Weblet's conection page is
showing an IP masq entry for:

Udp 4:55.63 192.168.1.1 192.168.231.255 138 -> 138 (61000)

I've looked up Port 138 and I can see it's NETBIOS Datagram, but I don't
understand why there is a connection on the firewall as I thought all
192.168.x.x addresses were non-routing ? So why does the firewall seem to
have allowed it to establish a connection ?

Also, I could understand if I was seeing 192.168.1.255 as a local broadcast,
but why .231.255 ?

Any idea's or enlightenment would put my mind at rest.

Many thanks to all.

John Whileman

Thanks charles,

I am going to check out nessus as per seans suggestion...

Do you know if it is possible to change the ping results to make it look
like it's a windows box?

ICMP code in response <> 0 => Unix box

If so would there be any side effects of doing this?

If you just changed the kernel it's still Bering; no need to copy syslinux.dpy

[leaf-user] ftp passive in Mering 1.2

2003-08-14 Thread Victor McAllister
I am helpiing a friend upgrade a Dachstein box to Bering 1.2 over DSL
PPPoE. He has a windows program (192.168.1.100 machine) on the internal
network that sends a gif file for a weater broadcast every 15 minutes.
The remote server accepts his login and password. It says binary
passive. It then sends the PORT that ends in port 4061.

Shorewall.log shows no packets dropped from the ftp server. It does
show som port 135 stuff dropped.

It works in Dachstein but does not work in Bering. The Berin box loads
the modules ip_conntrack_ft and ip_nat_ftp are loaded per default.

I understand that that kernel 2.4 allows connection tracking for active
ftp transfers.
The file does not get transfered.
I have ssh access to his firewall.

Any suggestions? It is not blocking by the ISP since we can boot up
Dachstein and it works. Any suggestions???

Currently Bering-uClibc hasn't been patched.

A test kernel for Bering-uClibc 2.0 beta has been prepared and tests are under

A patch for Bering-uClibc 1.2 is under discussion, but needs some time -

What would be the point of this? To hide your Linux box? There are
many other ways to fingerprint a box. Responses to ping, deny/reject
responses, IP ID field sequences, service responses. Just knowing a box
is a Linux box doesn't really help you break in. Knowing (or hiding)
that a box is running IIS doesn't help you that much either. Sure it
narrows the number of exploits you have to try, but the attacks are
scripted, so who care how long it takes, how many exploits are tried.

Nessus has a setting so it will make assumptions based on its
fingerprint findings. It scans faster that way. BUT, it misses stuff
too. Better turn that one off.

I had a point when I started this...

What steps would be required to convert the latest wisp distribution to work

For example, what would one have to do to ensure that the partition table
wont get all screwed up. Presumably it requires an install via the packages
you have made available, rather than doing the "lazy" dd operation, right?

Also, what would be required to have the bootup script detect that the local
disk is an IDE drive, and therefore instead copy all of the LRP and CFS
files to some place on the harddrive rather than building it all up within
RAM?

Thanks,
Marc

RE: [leaf-user] Routing 192.168.231.255

2003-08-14 Thread Whileman, John
Thanks Ray (and Tom and George)

I'd assumed (wrongly !) that all of the 192.168.x.x outbound connections
would not be routed as I only have a 192.168.1.x internal LAN. Thanks for
bringing me up to speed.

I'll check on the source machine for any outbound sessions using Zonealarm
and try to isolate the application that's causing them and then block
RFC1918 if it doesn't cause the ISP problems.

Once again, thanks to all for a great system.

John

Why not? While the RFC standard says that 192.168.0.0/16 is not
supposed to
be routed on *public* networks, there is nothing magic about the
addresses
that stops routers from trying to route them. You might, for
example, have
a private system with individual networks 192.168.1.0/16 and
192.168.231.0/16, and a router that connects them. Nothing wrong
with that,
sine it is not routing the addresses on or to the *public* network.

To stop routing on a Dachstein (not Dachstien) router, you need to
block
"RFC1918" addresses in the firewall ruleset. It's been some time
since I
last ran Dachstein here, so I cannot point you to the exact place to
set
it. But if you did not set it, the system will at least try to (in
your
case) NAT connections from your LAN to other networks in
192.168.0.0/16 .

As to "but why .231.255" ... I suppose because some workstation on
your LAN
is trying to reach that address. You'll need to investigate locally
to
figure out why. Maybe a laptop that is usually used on a different
LAN is
misconfigured ... but that's just a wild guess.

As an aside, from time to time people post questions here about
whether
blocked packets from/to ports 137/139 are attacks. I usually reply
suggesting that they are more likely to be a "leaky router" on the
ISP's
"LAN" than a deliberate attack. This problem is (I think) an example
of
just such a misconfigured router.

My logs are getting filled with:

Aug 12 17:12:28 crouter kernel: Packet log: input DENY eth0 PROTO=17 10.100.0.1:67
255.255.255.255:68 L=363 S=0x00 I=45322 F=0x T=64 (#10)

255.255.255.255:68 L=331 S=0x00 I=45336 F=0x T=64 (#49)

I have read through older posts and found a reply that says, if the IPs are my ISP's
DHCP server, I need to allow traffic through.

I have tried to each of the the following seperately...

1. external udp/tcp ports...
EXTERN_UDP_PORTS="0/0_bootpc 0/0_bootps"
EXTERN_TCP_PORTS="0/0_bootpc 0/0_bootps"
result: still filling logs

2. slient deny...
SILENT_DENY="udp_10.100.0.1_67 udp_68.81.146.1_67"
result: still filling logs

3. hosts allow: in Hosts.allow, added two lines
ALL: 10.100.0.1/255.255.255.255
ALL: 68.81.146.1/255.255.255.255
result: still filling logs.

I understand that the stuff in my logs has to do with renewing my IP address to my
ISP. My ISP is Comcast cable.

Chris.

Oops...forgot to CC: the list...

Sean Vincent wrote:
can I take the weblet.lrp with the lrpstat.jar from dachstein and load it

You probably want to use a weblet package created for Bering. The main
difference will be the CGI scripts that provide you with information.
With the differences between Dachstein and Bering (especially in the
firewall rules setup), you should use the CGI programs tuned to the
distribution you're running.
You can, however, copy the lrpStat.jar file from Dachstein, or from
Martin Hejl's page (URL below). In fact, you don't even have to have
the .jar file on your LRP box...you can copy the java applet directly to
one (or more) of your internal systems, saving a not insignificant
amount of space on your LRP boot media. Again, refer to Martin's page
for detailed documentation and installation instructions.
Info on properly installing and configuring lrpStat is available on
Martin Hejl's page:
