[LU] Update
22/3/2014 - Been quite busy trying to catch up with things around the house, car maintenance, appointment for myself and being at the hospital. I will be returning to work on the 1st of April on a graduated scale so I can still attend to steve in the afternoons and evenings. He is doing better. The catheter has been out for a few days and things are working normally. Physio only showed up twice this week. It would be better if they could come more often. He sits up in the chair when someone is available to bring the hoist in. He has been suffering with constipation for three days and they finally gave him something last night to move stuff along. His appetite is so- so because if this but he is drinking plenty. I gave him his phone as it makes him feel like he is in contact with the world and he can call me when he wants to. It also helps work his hands and fingers. He is really bored and get cranky. Naps are still high on the list. Now to just get the physio to show up more. Evidently he is to young for some of the therapy that could be used, according to his doctor. What the hell does age have to do with it? If it will help regain use of his legs then go for it. I'm work with him on the arms and hands and he is coming along. Still needs help with soup and liquid stuff but is making progress. They are hoping he can come home by Easter! I'm good with that! I'm home this morning waiting for the cleaner and then have to go collect my medicines and get some stamps. He is impatiently waiting for me to arrive by noon. Hopefully he will be bathed, dressed in clean tee shirt and had his meds and had breakfast. I took him in a book which he reads a bit before falling asleep. TV is NOT entertaining! Well best get moving and get my shower so I am ready to go when the cleaner is done. Feel free to pass this on to whomever you think will be interested. They are all probably bored silly by now! [LU] update
12/3/2014 - Hard to believe it is the 12th of March already. Has been a busy few days for me. I spent the 10th of March pitching a royal bitch as I had been receiving information (the nurses cannot tell you anything and it has to come from the doctors) that didn't make any sense. Suddenly, yesterday I started hearing from the diabetic people, the dieticians, the catering manager, one of Steve's main doctors, a doctor that I had only seen when he first came on the ward and two Sisters from Ward J20 and the diabetic Ward J21 (across the hall). Got more information that pulled things together in 3 hours than I have gotten in a whole week and a half before when I was getting bits and pieces. I was trying to bring him in food that, as diabetics, we had eaten at home and they told me it was responsible for his raised blood sugar. Then they hand me this booklet which has EXACTLY the types of foods I was bringing to him and it said that it was what he should be eating. Then while I am talking to his main doctor. some nurse is feeding him a lemon sponge pudding (full of sugar as Steve refused to eat any of the main course food) ) as the dietician told him to feed him whatever he wanted as long as he ate something. I went ballistic! That is when people came left, right and centre to tell me what was going on, that perhaps they had been mistaken about the fruit and are happy for me to bring the food we ate at home, as diabetics, to encourage him to eat. They have taken him off the day liquid feed (keeping the night feed to sustain him until he eats normally), but he takes two nutritional supplement drinks during the day plus whatever I can get down him. They have finished with his antibiotics and his fever only went up twice today and not by much at all. He is still on oxygen and still has the IV setup in his wrist in case something needs to be given in a hurry, still has the urine setup (although they had to change it when he got a urine infection). He is just come off the glucose drip, for now. They are trying it out to see if he can drink enough not to need it. His kidneys are still peeing for Britain but they say it looks like they may be starting to slow up. His blood showed to be on the high normal for sodium (which explains why his forgetfulness and confusion is still hanging around but he is showing signs being more with it than not being with it). I still have to feed him and make sure he drinks plenty. He isn't taken with the nutritional drinks and the nurses can't make him drink them if he refuses, but I can insist he does and he doesn't go against what I tell him to do. He keeps saying I do what I am told but that only seems to pertain to me. He got put through his paces by the physio today. It took three strapping people but they got him to stand up four times. It took everything out of him and they will be back everyday (except weekends) and doing it again. He also had to go for a liver ultrasound that I hope to find out the results tomorrow. Some blood test was a bit off and they wanted to check everything was okay. He eyes weren't yellow so it hopefully is only a minor thing. His skin is still peeling on his legs and the left one still has open sores so it is still wrapped like a mummy. Will probably be spending a night on the hospital sofa by weekend. The batteries on the scooter need charging and I can't get them off the scooter, into the house to recharge overnight and then get them back on the scooter in the early AM to leave for the hospital. Will probably do this on Saturday night, run home to see to the cat and get back to the hospital to get a parking spot. Sundays are not as hectic as the other days. Needs must! That is all there is for the moment. Heading for been, its been a really long day. [LU] Update
5/3/2014 - Update - I'm sorry for not being in the loop for the last couple of days. I needed to recharge my batteries and was dealing with Steve and his panic attacks so have been staying nights at the hospital. He slept through last night so I am coming home tonight. I'm telling him that I am just down the hall on the sofa and that if he needs me I will come. Over the past few days, Steve has had a quite high temperature which caused delirium and thrashing about in attempts to get away from everything. He didn't know where he was and the only person who could calm him down and keep him calm for them to do things with him was me. They finally found out that he had a urinary infection and put him on the only antibiotic that the bug was sensitive to. After 2 days it started to work and his temp came down. It still spikes now and then but seems to be behaving itself. They also had to remove the tube from his bum as the skin started to split. He now is in a nappie sort of thing, which by the way, he knows what it is and is VERY cross about it. He still has a the urine attachment. They are still giving him a very high nutrient supplement by way of a tube going through his nose to his stomach. Currently they are measuring what goes in versus what come out and are a bit concerned that it is not quite right so will be looking into it. They adjust his vitamin needs as and when. They have currently taken him off the saline drip as his blood results have improved (less salt) and are putting fluids into the stomach tube several times a day. He still has the IV in his had in case it is needed and they have to change the position of it every 72 hours. His tissues are giving up some of the fluid and this causes EXTREME shedding of the skin, but only on his legs, a bit on this arms and hands. He looks like a snake having a serious shed. There are bits of skin coming off all over the place. The skin underneath looks healthy. The staff are very grateful to me for coming in and giving him liquids and what ever food he will eat and keeping him calm so he will rest properly and not cause his blook pressure and breathing to go too high. I nap when he does and make sure I drink plenty and eat when I can. I bring stuff with me or get easy stuff to eat that doesn't require alot of prep. I think I am not getting ill myself as I am in his environment an home briefly. He can talkj a bit but his gums have shrunk and cannot wear his teeth so conversations are a guessing game at times. The doctors update me as much as possible when there is something to report. He dreams quite a bit and unfortunately he believes what he dreams, so I have a time to convince him we are not going on holiday yet and we do not need our passports and no, he did not go to a hotel last night and so on. He gets mad at me when I won't get him out of bed. His dreams and mind are telling him something other than what it is. He comes around and goes back to watching TV and trying to answer the questions on The Chase and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. If he keeps up with the little improvements, in a couple weeks he will be eating, drinking and full into rehab. I am crossing my finger till they ache. Meanwhile, we just do day by day. Progress is not leaps and bounds, so please forgive me it I cannot text or email often. I am tending to him and keeping him in contact with the present as that is what he needs as well. Thank you. 2/3/2014 - I am writing to tell you that I will not be available for updates for the next couple of days. I do not have facebook or other email capabilities on my phone and there is no wifi available at the hospital. Please keep texts to a minimum. I will advise when possible and through others. I have just come home to collect some clothes, give the cat he medicine and give extra food and water, pack some stuff for Steve and I to eat and drink and go back there. The hospital called me at quarter to seven this morning as he was delirious and thrashing around and wanted me to come and get him. He would not settle down and his heart rate was up as well as the fever. |He wouldn't drink or do anything for them. I dashed over there and calmed his down and then they got on with bathing him and all the other necessary jobs. The doctor was glad I came in at such short notice. He now has a urinary infection and still the high fever. I will be at the hospital until the antibiotics start controlling it and where I can be there in an instant to settle him as the thrashing and distress is affecting things. I will write again when things settle down. [LU] update
29/2/14 - 1/3/14 - Steve has had a set back. I arrived at the hospital at noon yesterday and he was exceedingly not well. One of his doctors arrived just as I did and examined him, then shortly another doctor came to look at him and then another. The told me he had a temperature that continued to climb and that he has possibly contracted another infection. They have taken numerous blood samples, swabs from his legs, urine and stool..all fro testing. They managed after quite some time to get an IV line in as his veins are becoming almost non-existent. They checked over his legs and they don't believe the infection is from there. He needs to start fluids as his sodium ib his blood was high and his blood sugar level was at 18. When I left at 8pm he was uncomfortable despite the numerous pain meds and soaking pillow after pillow with sweat. He is very weak and weary. ICU was suppose to come and evaluate him but they hadn't done by the time I left. Word was if he starts to deteriorate, they will come down... In the eyes of his doctors..he is..what are they waiting for..eminent death? How bad does it have to get?? That is all I have to tell. It now 6am on 1/3/14 Going to go shower. Doctor took IV line out of artery in neck as thought that may be the reason for it. They were talking about the possibility of putting others back in. They continue to do loads of blood tests. His kidneys have moved in to doing double time, but instead of taking fluid out of tissue, they are taking the fluid he drinks and running it through his system super fast. They want him to drink more and I told them again...he has a very small stomach and the stuff they are feeding him 24/7 by the tube to his stomach is keeping his stomach full and he will never be able to drink enough to combat what the kidneys are doing until you back the tube food off. He then will be able to drink and feel like eating. It might have sunk in as they are finally stopping the tube feed for part of the day. I am making his lunch and now will make his tea and take it in insulated containers and feed him as he cannot do it himself and he hates the taste of the hospital food...it is quite awful. After a mouthful or two, he quits. That is partly due to the tube feeding. They got him pretty stirred up after the night staff decided to totally bathe, moisturise and re-bandage both legs at 2am last night so it would save them time in the morning. This is a man who has just come from being unconscious battling a life threatening disease and has had exactly one nights sleep since he woke up just so they can save some time the next day. I was livid. He was in pain and so stressed after that ordeal. He hasn't been comfortable all day. I will be taking not only his lunch but now his tea in insulated containers so I know what is in it and that it tastes good so he will eat it, along with the juices, milk and whatever else I think he will drink. His lips have been so dry that they crack and bleed and he can't have anything put on his lips that has Vaseline or petroleum products in then due to the oxygen he is having to be on because they are flammable. I was told the hospital didn't have anything that didn't contain these products so I could either go down to the hospital shop to see if they had anything (they didn't) or find something at a shop outside the hospital. Thank you medical staff! The physical therapy people didn't show up either. One of the nurses told me that didn't like coming on the infectious disease ward so they didn't see them very often. Steve is there for the duration of his stay as far as I know..how is he supposed to have this therapy if they don't show up? There are some other issues going on which I do believe that I will have to be in contact with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service about. Today I didn't know if I was coming or going. [LU] Update
Update - thanks, Paula 25/2/2014 - 8am - They took the vent tube out sometime between 6am and noon on the 24th. I got in there at 2pm and he was awake. He knew me but talking was almost impossible due to the oxygen mask and the condition of his mouth and throat. I got the jist of what he was talking about. He doesn't remember anything about being at York other than arriving at the hotel. So the last ten days are a blur, but hopefully things will come back. They are letting him have tea/water by using a sponge on a stick dunked in a cup and then he takes the tea off that. He is able to move his hand and feet just a bit but his legs are still too painful and changing his bandages are quite a strain on him and leaves him very tired. He will require some physical therapy. He is totally out of rhythm with his sleep patterns and due to the IV line in his neck, he can't sleep as far on his right side as he would like. He just can't seem to get comfortable and just did some dozing last night. His blood test taken the other day came back with a slight yeast infection which they immediately jumped on with an antibiotic for the next three days. I left him for awhile to get a drink and he was stressed when I got back as the staff took the opportunity to change his dressing and check him out. After that, he didn't want me to go anywhere as bad people came in and hurt him so I dozed when he did by the bedside. The drugs have him confused and not quite aware of what has been done to him or what he has yet to do through. He is not totally aware of everything he is hooked up to. He will be in the Intensive Unit for awhile yet but I don't exactly how long. I have requested that the doctor(s) meet with me today so I can get an update on where he is. I left him last night after they got him settles and got a call shortly after I go home that they had moved him to another section of the ICU as they needed the space for someone more critical than him. He was very distressed and wanted to speak to me but he was too hard to understand and I finally got him to calm down and promise me to get some rest. I called at 6am and he had only dozed the night through. The nurse looking after him said that it is not unusual for patients to have their sleeping patterns disrupted after coming out of the coma and he should regain this on his own or they may give him something to help him sleep as this is not doing him much good. I will be putting things in order this morning and then heading up there. He probably won't want me to leave until the last bell is rung so I will be there the whole time, napping when he does, giving him tea and water when he wants it (tea seems to settle him - almost like a drug) and hopefully keeping him more calm. They are doing a good job with his pain relief so he doesn't hurt except when then have to move him. He is very frustrated and somewhat confused yet. He kept telling them he wanted to go home. They explained he isn't fit enough. They even gave him ear plugs to help with the hospital noise. He needs time and rest and if I have to stay the full visiting shot to keep him calm and do what needs doing for him, that is what I will do. The nurses appreciate the assistance. He has had tea this morning and that made him feel better - funny old stuff, isn't it? I will make sure he has as much of that as he wants. Hopefully he will finally sleep tonight! I'm not expecting replies from anyone. My main purpose for these updates is to inform those who want to know. If you are not interested and don't want to read about it, please pass it by. Please do not be offended also if I do not reply as I am doing everything to keep myself from being ill and trying to rest when I can. You just keep us informed Paula - as and when you can, but keep 99% of your strength for yourself and Steve. Brilliant to hear he's come through the coma - he will get better very soon. Can someone who's near that hospital and on this list please arrange a collection for, and donation of hundreds of thousands of teabags of whatever tea Steve prefers - it's called RECOVERY!!! :) Any unwanted ones can go the dedicated nurses and staff of the ICU and other surrounding wards! Re: [LU] Update on Steve
Paula, Thanks so much for the detailed update. I'm sure that we all understand the fog that you must feel you are living in at the moment. Glad to hear that the list of what it isn't is growing by the day - hopefully they'll get to the bottom of this and be able to help Steve out of his current situation. You both remain in my prayers. They are trying to bring him around slowly but if he shows any sign of panic or if his breathing becomes laboured again, he goes back under. His body needs him distracted to work as hard as it is. The doctors are very careful to advise that he is still in very very critical condition and it could still go bad. Doctors have to say this. I am grasping for any bright spot in this situation. They have taken a biopsy of the skin on his legs to test as they do not have any idea what he has. Hopefully the tests will be complete tomorrow and the will tell them something or they go back to more testing. They have taken him off some of the blood pressure meds, but his heart still requires help. He is getting some nutrition directly into the stomach through a tube going in his nose and down to there. The skin biopsy may take a week to come back with a result. It could be viral or a bacterial infection. The circumstances of him getting whatever this is is a chance all of us take everyday and it just happened that he came into something where, as the doctor said, there was a gap in his system that made it possible to it to get into his system and run rampant. If it is viral all they can do is let his body handle it, with them keeping him stable, and hope his heart keeps going. If it is bacteria, they should have something in the antibiotic arsenal to help him. They are bringing him out of the coma to fine out if what he has is affecting his brain and any other function. If he panics or becomes unhelpful to the point they have trouble doing what they need to do for him, then they will put him under. His liver, and lungs are okay. His kidneys are not particularly okay and his heart goes into mad rhythms sometimes. They say he is stable so we will hang on to that. He could go either way, but I am putting my hopes on him beating this. At least they are weeding out what it isn't and right now that list is bigger. When he turns the right corner and starts to come back to the world of the living instead of the half life that he now exists in, our lives will start heading in the normal direction and I will be able to function knowing he is beating this. Soma on for Kilkenny. Becchio wearing a very fetching sticking plaster on his head and happy in the knowledge that he DID stop that Bristol shot on goal (he is a defender, that's what we missed here). Anyway Luciano is away the now and McCormack is coming on as his replacement Kaspar is stopping everything as Bristol try to apply some sort of pressure, but Leeds would be lethal on the break if there was anything like a half decent finisher up front. It's games like this that show up the weaknesses in the team. Re: [LU] update
It was a bit lively. Some of it an inevitable consequence of City only selling us about half as many tickets as you could fit in the away end, leading to Leeds fans inevitably being in the wrong bits of the ground. After our first goal, there were a couple of spots of aggro (behind their goal and at the far end of the stand to our right) that looked like City fans reacting to celebrating Leeds fans. The one to our right looked quite nasty and took the police a fair while to sort out. But at this point nothing really happened to our left. Then about 10 mins later when nothing much was happening there was a bit of a ruckus to our left in the City bit closest to us and a couple of Leeds fans were dragged out by the stewards. One of them took exception to this and kicked off and it took a few police to drag him out. This made a few locals jump up and down and in turn led to a bit of a surge from our end towards that corner. A few Leeds lads then jumped out of the their end, ran across the corner of the pitch and jumped into our end. Robocop police arrived (not sure why they werent there in the first place) and put themselves between 2 sets of fans, but it didnt really calm down. It was quite a narrow gap (where we'd come in) and a bit of a crush occured with Leeds fans pushing forward towards City fans and police pushing them back. A few batons appeared but in reality no-one was going anywhere - there was still a wall and the side of the stand between the fans. So far nothing particularly out of the ordinary - but the odd bit was it just went on and on - lasted 15-20 minutes virtually to h-t. A bit of to and fro - the odd baton a few punches but no-one really moving. It had just about petered out when we got to h-t, then you had the surreal bit of loads of Leeds fans trying to get to the bog, but police not letting them through the narrow gap. Leeds fans pushing again - police on radio asking for reinforcements 'they're pushing us back' and Leeds fans saying 'we just want a wee'. All quiet in 2nd half though and amazingly they let us straight out at the end - a bit tense out on the streets for a bit. The police then seemed to let the coaches go, then stopped us, then tried to escort us but lost us in traffic after about 100 yards. Dread to think what its like when they play Cardiff. Oh and we won 2-0, Snoddy and greedy Gradel superb, new right back looked good. Should have had another on the break but quite glad Kasper and the bar saved us from a nervous last ten minutes Matt --- On Sat, 12/2/11, Richard Walker richleed...@yahoo.co.uk wrote: From: Richard Walker richleed...@yahoo.co.uk Subject: Re: [LU] update To: barbaravi...@gmail.com, leedslist@gn.apc.org Date: Saturday, 12 February, 2011, 16:59 I'll give you a few thoughts later - I hope someone who went can give a better match report and also tell us what happened off the pitch.
