Hello Everyone.

I took these photo's out of a Wood Chuck training video, named Profile
following. They show the template follower being used to make these 5 spindles,
The neat thing here is they only used one very simple wooden template to make
all 5 spindles.

The template is just a general guide you can use it to make a copy of the
original or use for the general profile to make something different. in the
last photo you can see that all, are different but  share the same basic shape.
By using different router bits, and cutting concepts (roping or fluting) the
look can and will change.

The ribbon twist (second for the right in the last photo.) is the most

dramatic, this cut was made from cutting form the side, using both a large
straight fluted cutter, and using a LONG Pitch .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkGSMtixW1c=2s  Bill made this video a few
years back, showing the concept.

Have a good day.

My lathe uses different shaped followers depending on the cutter that I am

As I see it the Lathe is for exact coping/fine details, where the Legacy is for
just basic shapes. details can be

added with the Legacy, but those details are done with the router bits profile.
so as long as my templates are true

Hey Guys.

Unless there are some more people talking on this posting, I think I will let
it drop for the time being.
Today I did another bone turning, that, Over all I am pretty happy with.

Bye the way, I counted all my Stainless steel templates that I made over the
last two weeks, I have 14 templates. I was having so much fun, I forgot how
many that I made. ;-) This bone turning was made form last
Thursday's lunch time break, template.
I roped the center part, and then fluted the two outside beads, and leaving the
end beads just round.
As I said earlier, I am pretty happy with this one. "Yes" there are some small
errors in the process but, Perhaps
I am just to picky with my own work?
"O"Well, I'm having fun. ;-) Another one down, appx. 30 more blanks left to do
before I run out of bone disks.

Have a good night everyone.

Stainless Steel templates

Hello Everyone.

I took these photo's out of a Wood Chuck training video, named Profile
following. They show the template follower being used to make these 5 spindles,
The neat thing here is they only used one very simple wooden template to make
all 5 spindles.

The template is just a general guide you can use it to make a copy of the
original or use for the general profile to make something different. in the
last photo you can see that all, are different but share the same basic shape.
By using different router bits, and cutting concepts (roping or fluting) the
look can and will change.

The ribbon twist (second for the right in the last photo.) is the most

dramatic, this cut was made from cutting form the side, using both a large
straight fluted cutter, and using a LONG Pitch .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkGSMtixW1ct=2s Bill made this video a
few years back, showing the concept.

Have a good day.

use to cutting from the side of the work, to make the profiles.

I had some free time today, so I made these templates for my Legacy, Only one
has been tested so far, but I do think most of these should work well for my

I can use these templates on All of my wood working equipment, both of my
Legacy's as well the lathes I own.

Note: I see and use templates not as the final part of turning, but as a
general guide for basic shaping of my spindles.

Making stainless steel templates is not all that hard, by using an abrasive
cutting wheel, and some hand files + a wire wheel to remove any burs... the
process is pretty easy. (If anyone wants to know more, Please ask.)

Tomorrow I hope to be able to try some of these out on some of my bone turning.

Have a good night everyone.

Re: New hand made Stainless Steel templates

2024-02-15 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
 Hello Everyone.

Thank you all for your notes/kind words.
Rick I use to have the use of a laser,  I made appx. 300 plastic templates,
that most worked out very well for me.Today I no longer have that access to
that laser, so I started going back to the olden daysmethods that worked for me
in the past.  My quality of my home made templates, is not quite the same as
the laser, but  Over all I think these stainless steel templates should workout
well for me.As I see it, Its all part of the learning experience.  (And I am
still learning a lot, form this practice.)

Talk to you all MORE, when I wake up. Have a good day.

These look very substantial and long-lasting Curt. I wonder if it would be
worthwhile cutting them out of ¼” acrylic sheet on a laser engraver. It if is,
it would be a fast and easy way to duplicate them when they wear out or someone
else needs one (and a lot lighter, and hence cheaper, to post).

Also, anyone with any graphics skills (eg. Using Illustrator) could create
their own template designs – or perhaps take a contour off of an existing piece
they are trying to replace/replicate (maybe using one of those contour
measuring things from Homedepot etc.)

Hello and Good morning again everyone.

I stated the Pen State was the only company that still makes templates.

This is true, but I also wanted everyone to know there templates are a bit
different then the

ones that I make.  here are some photo's of there templates modified to work
with my set-up.

As you can see there templates are much smaller then what I make, In these
photos, I tac wielded there

templates onto a piece of metal So I can hold these templates with my
set-up/tool holders. There templates

are nice, but they may need some modifications if you want to use them.(same
but different.)  ;-)

NOTE: the white template in the mid, of the second photo is one that I made/

Hello and Good evening everyone.(I just got home form work.)

I was asked about these templates that I was making, And I thought

others might also like to hear more on this topic.

First off, the ones that I am making today are stainless steel, but in the past
I

made and used many other materials, I have wood, plastic, and metal templates
that I

have both bought and made.

The bought templates are both plastic and metal. Pen State are the only company
that I

know of today that still sell templates for turning. but in the past there were
more.

I think the CNC world has all but destroyed that part of the industry,
Templates were the poor

man's CNC. to make copies of parts for many woodworkers (in all fields not just
wood turning.)

I see the template as a general guide only, I am not looking for fine details
in my templates, only

the general shapes are what I want.  The details I choose to add with my Legacy
and or turned by hand,

this give my work a homemade/custom quality , but also lets me have the finer
look of a production

quality, that many people today are looking for.

When I start, I always start with the centerline of the part. This centerline
is where I not only start to draw

from, but its also this line is were I align my templates and machines so
everything works together. this is why

every template has a flat on both edges, those edges are/is the center line of
the part. (made for easy alignment.) On my lathe and Legacy, this center line
is the center points of the tailstock and headstock.

all measurements are taken form this point.

These stainless steel templates are made for my bone turning handles that I
like to make today. I am limited

to the measurement of the handle I make. those are.  3 3/4" long x 1/2" tall

Hello and Good evening everyone. (I just got home form work.)

(remember the spindles are originally 7/8" dia. round, so just under 1/2" is
the dia. will be my max, size for my cuts.)

As a General note. these templates are for small work, if the spindle is larger
then what I want to make the template too will also have to be modified, if I
choose to use it. This leads to the need of having many different templates. At
this time, I have appx. 300 templates hanging in my shop. (I only have one
photo, at this time, it is of one of my three racks that hold some of my
templates.) In the photo there are wood, Corian, and plastic templates that I
made on a laser a few years ago. Many of these templates range form stair case
parts, finals, and other wood turning design patterns that I wanted to make
over the years.

I have a rack in the rafters of my shop which has many table legs and spindles
form side jobs. fully made parts that I used as templates in my early days of
wood working.

Back to the topic.

If you are only looking for a general shape and key points, that have to be
copied, templates are an easy way to maintain quality and to increase speed in
production.

Today I find it fun, and easy to make templates when needed. these stainless
steel templates that I have shown. only take me appx. 20 min. form start to
finish. (the pic. of the Stainless steel templates are to show how simple the
designs can be, as well as the size of these templates.)

If you have more questions, Please let me know.

Have a good night everyone.

Re: New hand made Stainless Steel templates

2024-02-15 Thread Rick Hutley

NOTE: the white template in the mid, of the second photo is one that I made/
point of reference.

Hello and Good evening everyone. (I just got home form work.)

Hey Mac

Yes you are right Stainless Steel is not easy to work with. using most hand
tools.

But with a hand angle grinder and an abrasive wheel, Plus a pedestal grinder
with both a grinding wheel and wire brush and a few files.(for fine detail
work.) working with these scrap steel pieces was not all that hard to do. Each
template took something like 20 min. to make.(+/-)

As I start getting more use to do this kind of stuff by hand again, I am hoping
the quality of my work will also improve?

I just made one more turning today.

This one is template work, with the Wave Attachment and the Legacy.

More latter.

Have a good day.

I have never tried cutting stainless - but have tried to drill it - and that's
a real bear!  Much easier to drill angle iron.

C.A.G.

Re: New hand made Stainless Steel templates

2024-02-12 Thread M.W.Foscue
Curtis,

Would it not have been easier to use pieces of scrap 2x2 angle iron or a steel
window lintel from a house being renovated?
You may be able to fined scrap steel at a local "Habitat for Humanity
Re-store". (One of my favorite places to check out once or twice a month.)
I have never tried cutting stainless - but have tried to drill it - and that's
a real bear! Much easier to drill angle iron.

Re: New hand made Stainless Steel templates

2024-02-12 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
 Good morning guys!
Thank you for the kind notes.I really like to use templates, Not like I need
them but they do helpa lot to keep things as simple as possible.Jeff. On my
Legacy 1000ex and my 200 the stylist is a 1/2" ball bearing guide, And on my
Shop Smith lathethe stylist is the exact shape as the cutter that I am using.
So fine details can be added/copied.  As a General note, I do use all my
equipment on everything that I do,  I was taught Uniformity is the key to
success, I can switch form the Legacy to my lathe and back again to the Legacy,
with in just a few seconds with out having to change my set-up at all. This
general idea lets me make a higher quality of product, faster and easer then
using just one machine by its self.these stainless steel templates just help me
keep this concept running smoothly.the hard part about making a template is
keeping the size to scale of what I want. For me, with these ones that I made,
are for some of my bone turning. since the blanks are mostly the same size, my
templates can not be larger then the largest part of the blank, and also the
smallest part of the template can not be smaller then 1/4" or I will cut into
the brass shaft that is in the mid. of the bone blanks. And then you still need
to keep the basic shapes, to make them look nice. The hard part is keeping the
templates with in the scale you need. some templates work, some don't work as
well. I am always tweakingthe templates with a small file and or sanding a edge
to try to find what I need, for the look that I want.I plan to play with some
of these templates today.
