[LegacyUG] Publication Centre: Place holders

2006-10-13 Thread Ken Carkeet
Greetings!

Can someone please tell what place holders are used for and how to use them.
I can't find any reference to them in the help files. I want so insert some
pictures in the beginning of my book. I don't necessarily want to use the
scrap book function to do this.

Thank you for you hell.

Re: [LegacyUG] problem solved by TASK ARRAIGNER

2006-10-13 Thread Lance

Actually, there is a TASKARRANGER. It can be downloaded from:
http://sporkchop.com/Software/TaskArranger/
Does the same job as TaskArrange and was probably the one you were
thinking of, Sandra. Pity about the confusing names for applications
which both do the same thing :-).

The program is called TaskArrange, not Task Arraigner. One of the many
places you can find it is:

Re: [LegacyUG] Screen Shots

2006-10-13 Thread Lance

There are a number of screen capture utilities available - free and
shareware. Windows users though have a basic built-in screen capture
utility all ready to use with a couple of keystrokes.

To capture the full screen, just press the PRT SCR key (to the right
of the F12 key in the top row). This will copy the full desktop view
to the Windows clipboard. From there it can be pasted into any imaging
software (MS Paint for example). MS Word or any other application
which accept pasting.

To capture the uppermost screen you have open, press the ALT key along
with the PRT SCR key. Again, you can then paste it into an imaging
application. In there it can be edited or have text added to explain
what it is about.

Here is another free one: Mirek's Free Windows Software
http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html

For anyone who dose a considerable amount of screen capturing, Snagit
is probably the ultimate tool in the shareware field:
SnagIt Screen Capture - Capture and Share Your PC Screen

If you would like an illustrated, printed guide, there is available
for download a .DOC file here:

Much to my surprise, I do. I just turned off that feature. The down
side of growing computer-literate future genealogists is that they often
find features that I would never use. The up side is when these same
folks figure out useful features that I never would have discovered
because I tend to input, rather than explore the program.

RE: [LegacyUG] Entering source details

2006-10-13 Thread Norman Weston

This thread is one of the longest hot topics we have had on this list for
some time and highlights the fact that something is not quite right.

Jeff originally said

> I personally (maybe it is me) find entering source details
> confusing and prone to error and inconsistency.

No, its not just you Jeff, I am sure that many of us legacy users have found
this to be the case and source citation in legacy is a big learning curve.
Personally I don’t agree with Jeff's conclusions but everyone has their own
take on this.

About a years ago, I asked Legacy support for a simpler method, click on the
source icon to bring up ONE entry box to include both Master and Detail to
enable a quick citation for a simple source as in a copy and paste
operation. Then if a more complex citation was required there could be
buttons on this simple source screen to take you to the relevant Master or
Detail boxes with all the complexity that there is now incorporated. There
are many new genealogists and new legacy users who are put off by the
current complexity.

I am hoping that the hinted work in progress on sourcing goes someway to
satisfy at least some of us but I am equally sure that it will not satisfy
everyone.

May I ask, If YOU were going to do some experimenting, what would you
start with for printing out--what reports? I think I want an Ancestor

I like factual detail, pictures, narrative, stories, sources.

RE: [LegacyUG] RTFs, PDFs and layouts-Word vs WP| Now Image placement in WordPerfect.

2006-10-13 Thread Peter Haughton
Jennie, I have no problem with that at all, but it
may be best to wait until someone says what the
actual defaults for the picture import are. My
WordPerfect has had its defaults so changed to
suit ME that I'm sometimes not sure how it
behaves for others.
It would also be appropriate if at least someone
says it actually helped them?

I understand that some who complained about
not being able to position or re-size images
and/or caption those images in rtfs imported into
WordPerfect (or Word for that matter) actually
want Legacy rtf or pdf output altered to suit their
needs. I'm happy that it is relatively easy to
meet any needs I've seen expressed so far with
the rtf imported into WordPerfect. So I'd far
rather time was spent in providing an rtf version
of Descendant Charts for example. But most
people think charts have to have boxes, and it's
too difficult to do boxes in rtf files. I don't
use boxes, so please can I have an rtf when I
don't choose boxes?

RE: [LegacyUG] RTFs, PDFs and layouts-Word vs WP

2006-10-13 Thread Jan Roberts
I have created a macro to help with formatting the captions in Word. It
seems to work without making changes to other text inadvertently. I set it
up to remove the [ and ] and the words Caption and Description, and to move
the Description to follow the Caption.
e.g.
[ Caption: John Rees SULLIVAN ]
[ Description:
(1992) ]

 Now reads

John Rees SULLIVAN (1992)

And

[ Caption: Bill ]
[ Description: Bill Roberts aged approximately 6 years
(c 1952) ]

Now reads

Bill Bill Roberts aged approximately 6 years (c 1952)

(This process has highlighted that I need to think about my descriptions so
I don't get things like Bill Bill when I run the macro.) I also need to
refrain from using full stops at the end of the description, or it messes up
the macro. It will always pay me to check the resulting text to make sure
the macro hasn't inadvertently made unexpected changes, and there may be
individual cases that the macro doesn't pick up when it should - for example
if there is a stray punctuation mark that doesn't fit the recorded sequence,
but it certainly makes removing the unwanted words and punctuation a breeze.

Happy to send a copy of the macro to anyone who would like to try it.

Cheers,
Jan

Re: [LegacyUG] Quarter dates

2006-10-13 Thread Chris Coward
Quarter datesUnfortunately Q3 1932 sorts as March 1932. SEP Q 1932 sorts as
July 1932 (covering July-Sep). UK BMD quarter dates were added to Legacy
with version 6.0.0.82. Legacy online help doesn't mention this but "What's
New" for version 6.0.0.82 states:
"Date Formats - Legacy now recognizes quarter dates commonly used in UK BMD
Index records. (e.g. Mar Q 1873, Jun Q 1873, Sep Q 1873, Dec Q 1873)"

Re: [LegacyUG] Mac version of Legacy?

2006-10-13 Thread ETM
I use a MacBook and have split it fifty-fifty
between Windows and Apple. Most Mac users would
probably not be willing to give Windows that much
space, but I am not all that unhappy with
Windows.

Reunion is up to date and a good program and is
used by most who use Mac.

However, if I want to I can load Legacy (I use
Deluxe version) and any other genealogy program
designed for PCs (free or fee) on the Windows side
of the Mac.

One program (Parallels) runs Windows WITHIN Apple,
in other words a window within a window. Another
program runs Windows as its own operating system
and one has to boot into Windows and is NOT in
Apple at all when on the Mac. That is Boot Camp,
that is my preference. Windows operates just fine
there. I haven't felt much need to be within
Apple when working with Windows. Doesn't make
much sense to me.

If the database was on CD the file properties are probably read only.
Right click on the file, select properties and remove the tag from read only (not sure about the terms because I use the Dutch version of windows xp).
If the file is still on CD than you have to move the file to Hard Disk, Legacy cannot open databases from CD.

[LegacyUG] problem solved by TASK ARRAIGNER

2006-10-13 Thread Sandra Tyler Duncan

    For many months I
griped about how legacy turned on yucky every morning when I did
hibernation wrong. Nothing could be done, viewing, adding or altering in any
way, so I used to shut entire computer down and do a restart. Then I found Task
Arraigner and when it come out of hibernation each day, the first thing that I
do is to shut down LEGACY then start it up again, editing problem is solved but
then on the bottom task bar, LEGACY is not the first in line, somehow, I
found task arraigner, Just tried to find it to share with you but was not able
to Google it, sorry, but when I first complained about this months ago,
Another lister said that they had the same trouble, LEGACY OK when closed into
hibernation but when opening no actions can be performed. So, instead of
restarting computer, I just close and reopen LEGACY, which puts it far to
the right of the start button and TASK ARRAIGNER can move it to be 'just'
to the right of the start button which is my preference. Please mail me
privately if you find the place to download the
program.

RE: [LegacyUG] Mac version of Legacy?

2006-10-13 Thread Robert Carneal
Keren-

Well, barely yes, and mostly no.

Barely yes because there is software out there that will allow Windows
software to run on a Mac, but from I am hearing, it runs agonizingly slow.
So it runs so slow, that most people will declare Legacy does not run on a
Mac. In this regard, I would suggest having a computer with Windows that you
use hardly anything on except Legacy. Perhaps a laptop for Legacy?

Mostly no due to its slowness. Please be advised that when a friend of mine
tried this, he lost the ability to perform Spell Check in editing events. He
found that so frustrating that he paid someone to make him a Windows
computer and has nothing on it except
1. Windows
2. Internet Explorer
3. Email client
4. Word Processor
5. Spreadsheet
6. Legacy

Just those six things. He is happy with it, although he would have like to
have had Legacy on his Mac.

Re: [LegacyUG] merging online sources

2006-10-13 Thread Dale Castle

Melanie, If I am understanding what you are asking.
I was suprised myself, when last night I clicked on Internet at the top line of
the Legacy display ( I subscribe to Ancestry.com) . and it displayed
several of the on line subscription sites. If you have say your grandmothers
family in the main display, it will go to Ancestry site and search
(automatically) for that grandmother. It is pretty neat. Tho have not
tried to merge any info. that I have found.

  Subject: [LegacyUG] merging online
  sources

Hi, I used to use Family Tree
Maker (FTM) but switched for many reasons. What I did like about FTM was
searching for sources online (specifically ancestry.com) then being able to
merge that info (census record, birth or death record, etc) right into my
family tree. I could merge the individual and if it listed family members then
I could merge them as well. I haven’t been able to locate the same tool with
Legacy. I am really liking Legacy but there is so much to learn! Does Legacy
Deluxe Edition have a search option similar to what I was using with FTM?
Since FTM is the preferred software that ancestry.com promotes I assume that
means you can only merge sources if you use FTM? Anyone else used FTM? I was
thinking, maybe I’ll use FTM, merge the sources, create a gedcom, import
gedcom to legacy, but too many steps!

  Any help greatly
  appreciated!

  Melanie

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy is freezing

2006-10-13 Thread Sherry/Support
Ron,

Anything's possible! It could be related to another program running also!
Been there, done that with freezing issues and it can be a real pain to
figure out what's going on!

Personally, I'd never leave a program open for 6-8 hours if I'm not using
it. I've had too many freezing problems and power outages to risk files
getting corrupted! About the only thing that remains open is my instant
messenger program.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Sherry,

Just a thought, but is it possible that this is a Windows problem rather
than Legacy's. I have recently found this happening with other programs and
am beginning to wonder if it's connected with a Windows Update.

Sherry:

When I right click on the shortcut on my desktop. as you suggest, it shows
in Type of File "Legacy Genealogy Software". On the line that says>

My problem began with I tried to "Click and Drag" my files to a CD as a
backup.

The error message reads:"Error Opening database." The message inside the
box reads. "Unrecognized database format. C\Documents and Settings\Wilbur

Any suggestions?

[LegacyUG] Individual/Master Events

2006-10-13 Thread Jenny M Benson
I notice that in the GEDCOM Export dialogue box there are options to
"export Private individual events" and "export Private master events."

What exactly is the significance of "individual" and "master" in this
context? I'm guessing it refers to events that were assigned to
individuals and events that appeared in the master list, but had not
been assigned, but I can't see why an "unused" event would appear in a
GEDCOM.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering source details

2006-10-13 Thread Dawn Crowley

Great idea!  I am trying to teach my children the importance of
entering the source, not just the "exciting part" of newly found
information.  Providing them with a template to follow would make this
much easier and enjoyable for them now, and more useful for all
concerned in the future.

Legacy is an outstanding program to use.  I sat my eleven year-old son
in front of the computer with pertinent census screens on the taskbar,
and he went to town creating his own database for his genealogy merit
badge.

and typed them up in a Word document.  I also made format examples for
the information I input for source detail for each particular census.
Now when I review any "documents/indices" and want to input them as an
event, I use the clipboard and copy/paste the formats from the Word
document (I have the Legacy program open and my Word document open).
Although it is a bit of back and forth with the alt and tab keys, the
format stays consistent and the actual template has blanks for what
needs to be filled in and has been spell-checked.

I am sure there is an easier way but this system works for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to open Legacy 5.0

2006-10-13 Thread Wilbur & Faye Cleveland

Hi Sherry:

I believe my problem started when I tried to "click and drag" my files to a
CD, for back up. I haven't been able to open the files since.

Here is what I am getting:

When I click on the "Cleveland Family"
short cut on my desk top, I get an error message which reads:

"Error Opening Database"
  Unrecognized database format.
C\Documents and settings\Wilbur Cleveland\locale settings\application
data\Microsoft CD Burning\Cleveland Family .fdb.

When I click on the Legacy Icon on my desktop, I get a Windown with a
heading
Open Family File at the top. Drop down box has "Desktop", in the Window are
the files on my desktop. At the bottom, the top drop down box ask for "file
name". The second drop down box has "legacy (."fdb) in it.

My Daughter set up the 5.0 program originally on my hard drive. Now, it
is

asking for a user name and password to open. Can you check and see if she
put a password in when the program was first installed?

Does the "free" use of 5.0 expire after so Long? I tried to update to 6.0
and now my program guide in the Control Panel shows I have both 5.0 and
6.0.

Can you help me, before I slash both wrist?

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering source details

2006-10-13 Thread malkajef

An apology:
As the user who started this thread I wish to issue an apology and a
clarification. In no way was I intending to start a flame. For what it is
worth, I think Legacy is a superb genealogy program. It has numerous
features that make it an excellent choice for any genealogist irrespective
of experience.

I also do not wish to leave the impression that it is not structured
properly. In fact it is beautifully structured and has numerous terrific
features not least of which are its logical and easy interface, its great
ability to be customized, the extremely useful clipboard, and many others.
I even like the fact that it uses Access tables, because it is likely that
Access will remain viable for years to come which will not necessarily be
true of proprietary genealogical databases. My remarks were only directed at
the source entry screens which - at least for me - I find somewhat too
unstructured and prone to confusion (for me), so that it is not always clear
what data should fit where in the numerous source fields. Perhaps it is just
that the field titles need to be made clearer for users like me.

The need to use a external crib sheet for data entry has been mentioned and
indeed I have created one for my own source entry fields to provide
consistency, but that should not be necessary. No crib sheet is necessary
to remember where the names, birth details, date of death or children's
names go, and with a little rework the same may be true for the source
module. Perhaps it is just a matter of clarifying the titles of the present
source fields. Or, in the interest of keeping it very customizable, maybe
users could be given the ability to add some text to the field titles which
would remind the user how he/she uses this field and what data the user
wishes to enter there (a "built in" cribsheet).

All in all this is an excellent program and I apologize, especially to the
programmers, if I have in any way implied otherwise. That was not my intent.

Jeff

Instead of saying the program should guide you on how you should enter
your information,(I prefer to make my own decisions), why not discover
on your on own what works best for you. Then, take screenshots of what
you have done. You can save your screenshots and you will have created
your own guide of what works best for you. Best of all, you don't have
to remember how you entered an event/source. You can refer to your own
personal guide at any time.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering source details

2006-10-13 Thread ronald ferguson
Firstly, in the UK we do not have all those fields on our census returns (It
would be considered far too intrusive) and hence I would not want them
anywhere near my computer - Legacy is big enough as it is.

By using the census as a source then the details you specify would be events
(or facts) and it is easy using the source clip boad to link the census to
whichever event is applicable. Thus, for eg. in the case you mention, the
Master Source would be "USA Government" (or whatever) and the detail "19-WD
PHILADELPHIA; Series: T624 Roll: 1393 Page: 255
Enumeration district ..., sheet # ". You may have noticed that some
people do also attach the full detail to the head of the household.

WRT Gedcoms, I have yet to come across a problem of creating Gedcoms in
Legacy and the recipient being unable to read it correctly, be it an
individual or a site such as Ancestry or Rootsweb. I do try, though, to use
the output format which is most applicable to the recipient.

My web site comprises two independently compiled Legacy Trees. Whilst we
both use censuses as a source the actual way in which we use them differs
with little effect on the html output. Where I have imported a Gedcom then
the format of those pages can differ but as long as it's clear does it
really matter? In my view, not much - and if I am concerned I can always
rearrange the data.

With respect to other events/sources we both have our own way of doing
things and again there is little difference to the web output. A long time
ago we agreed to settle for inputting and arranging data in ways with which
we, as individuals, were most comfortable and to date have no reason to
regret this. I repeat, I regard this flexibility as an asset.

I therefore like to enter all this data "somewhere" (I now think in the
source detail) using a template that I fill for the individual in question.
Here is the template (taken from a blank census form because it is more
legible) for a 1910 census. Because it is a lot of info, it seems redundant
to put all this in 2 places and yet I think it should all be together in
one
place for that person, so the next researcher does not need to redo all
that

work again. Can't the report module find it from one identified standard
location?

example:
"19-WD PHILADELPHIA; Series: T624 Roll: 1393 Page: 255"
Enumeration district ..., sheet #
(No of) people listed: names ..
Relationship to head of family:
Sex:
Race:
Age:
Marital status:
Number of years married:
Mother of how many children:
Place of birth:
Place of birth of father:
Place of birth of mother:
Years of immigration to the US:
Naturalized or Alien:
Language spoken:
Occupation:
Nature of trade:
Employer, worker, or own account:
No. of months not employed:
Can read and write:
Attending school:
Property owned or rented:
Owned free of mortgage:
Farm or house:
Veteran of Civil War:
Blind or deaf-mute:

The tips site is very helpful, but that information should really be
incorporated into the program itself in the nature of specialized fields.
For instance if one enters the source "type" as census, the screen should
change to present fields specific to a census sheet (enumeration district,
page # etc). If the type is an archival document, the entry fields titles
should also change accordingly guiding the user to enter the proper
information. That is what I believe is presently lacking in Legacy but
could be incorporated by the programmers.

Like I said, it is a great genealogy program, but it could be improved in a
couple of places to make it better. I do not wish to dissuade anyone from
using it. On the contrary, I just would like it to be better - as I am sure
it will.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering source details

2006-10-13 Thread GSS
What you are suggesting (templating sources) is a route that the
program Generations took quite a few years ago. It is something that I
really like and why Generations is my main program. My problem is that
Generations has been bought by the same company that gives us FTM,
Ancestry etc and they are no longer supporting it - at the moment it
is working OK but with ever increasing updates for Windows plus other
utilities means that eventually it is going to pack up completely. I
would love to transport all my data across to Legacy and use that now
as my main program but because I have entered all my sources in this
"formatted way" I cannot "Gedcom" them to any program without loosing
all my source details. Gedcom works fine for names/dates etc but will
not transfer my sources as the Gedcom standard does not support this
change to the way sources are handled. (I also belong to a Generations
Users group and there are a number of us (some with great programming
skills) with this problem but it seems completely unsolvable other
than at some stage to re-enter/massage our sources, however as I have
more than three times as many sources as people and have now got quite
a few thousand in my tree the thought of that amount of work at the
moment is not high on my agenda.

2006-10-13 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
That is one of the reasons I created over 60 Census
types I have a code for year and country: CenC1841 =
Canada Census 1841. I have many census records of
multiple families in the same counties and/or
townships. In Norway, all three hundred people in one
area are related to me. what I do is transcrige each
'page' into the Source text, the copy each individual
line to the correct source detail. When I first
started I had my plan on scrap paper on the desk until
I remembered the plan when returning to the next
session. You may not need this, but some of us have
more people we choose to keep track of.
IMHO, you might want to print out a few sources, to
leave out as reference to what you wish to match. This
should cut down or eliminate the confusion. It took me
a while to be consistant, and I still mess up
occasionally.

Peter, thanks for your clear exposition of how to handle images in Legacy rtf files in WP, it brings back happy memories.. Guess I'd better bite the bullet, re-install WP and give it a whirl. I really, really hate Word so this is a good excuse to widen my options.

RE: [LegacyUG] RTFs, PDFs and layouts-Word vs WP| Now Image placement in WordPerfect.

2006-10-13 Thread Peter Haughton
I've now looked at how images in Legacy rtf file output
are placed and imported into WordPerfect. To describe
how you resize and position these images in WordPerfect
I need several points/suggestions of introduction.

I suggest you NEVER try to drag images to reposition or
resize them.

Images are placed in an "image box". When you click on
the image and it is selected, you are selecting the box.

The image box is located on the page in one of three
ways: It is attached to a character, a paragraph, or a
page. Unfortunately, the rtf input conversion chooses
attachment to a character, which for nearly ALL uses
is totally inappropriate. The conversion also sets the
option that the image box changes the text line height
to match the image box height. Consequently, you will
never be able to get text to wrap, or reposition the
image box. TO OVERCOME this POSITIONING, right-
click on the image box, choose Position..., and change
the Attach box to EITHER Paragraph or Page. Until you
learn the consequences, I suggest you use Paragraph.
Play with the Horizontal and Vertical position parameters
to understand how they work. ALWAYS use these to
move the image around.

rtf import will (from what I have seen so far) set the
image to its original size.
Use Box Size (Right-click, choose Size...) to CHANGE
THE SIZE of your image. Set EITHER the Width OR
the Height, NOT BOTH. The other should always be set
to Maintain proportions (unless you wish to specifically
distort an image). The Full option will make the size of
the image stretch to the full page margin width or height.
To see the original size of the image, choose Maintain
proportions for both width and height.

>From the right-click menu you can set borders on the
image, how text wraps around it, the caption and where
it is placed, and so on. Under the border/fill option, you
can set the internal and external spacing in the image box,
that is the space between the image and a border, and
the spacing between the border and any wrapping text.

Finally, if you do not like any of the defaults (like the
border, box spacing, default size, ... you can edit the
image box style to suit yourself. For example, I THINK
inserted images by default come with some sort of
border. I do not like this, and MY default is NO border,
and my images come in that way.

Good luck. Peter

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering source details

2006-10-13 Thread Cathy

Hi Pat,
You're right. You won't know some details of how you want to enter
things until you have looked at the output you want.

Suggestion/Solution?

Experiment.
Enter some data. Run reports with the options that appeal to you.

Don't like it?
Enter the data another way.

The essential thing is that the output is clear, not only to you but to others.
The essential thing for sources is that someone else can take your
source and find the same information.
Following suggested standards is good, but until standards setters
start thinking like computers, it will always be difficult to follow
the guidelines exactly.
eg Elizabeth Mills excellent book Evidence is very helpful on
sourcing - but she tends to mix up Detail and Master Source in her
suggested output so it's impossible to get her exact output with any
rational use of Legacy.

I don't know how anybody KNOWS exctly how s/he wants to arrange things,

and various kinds of reports. (And then there are also various options
within the reports etc.)

Does anyone have suggestions/a solution for this??
