[LegacyUG] TreeDraw and Legacy photos, Passage Express

2007-01-12 Thread Tracy Skegg

Hi Listers
I'm using Legacy 6.0 deluxe with 118 build, and the addon program
TreeDraw. Over Xmas period I was trying to make reports and web pages
to add into Passage Express and after learning that PE changes all the
folder names to numbers I was able to get everything to link by using
the number of the folder rather than the name I had given it.

I tried to create TreeDraw charts from my Legacy file, it worked fine,
but I couldn't figure out how to only add the preferred photo from
Legacy into TreeDraw. I keep getting all photos even when I check
Include Pictures and Must have Print flag. Can anyone tell me
how to get only the preferred image into my TreeDraw charts?
Cheers
Tracy

Re: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw and Legacy photos, Passage Express

2007-01-12 Thread Cathy

Hi Tracy,
Re getting only preferred image into TreeDraw
I don't think it can be done - at least not easily.
The first problem is: What is a Print flag?

As you've discovered, it's not the Preferred mark.
Is it the Picture Tag? In a Legacy scrapbook you are supposed to be
able to print just tagged pictures - but I think that has a bug.
Anyway I have that set for far too many pictures to go through and
remove it except for preferred pictures.

If you find a way or get a better response from the makers of
TreeDraw than I got several years ago when I raised this issue, let me know.

Re: [LegacyUG] To-Do List Ideas?

2007-01-12 Thread Randolph Clark

Cathy,

Your suggestion about purging the Master To-Do lists solved what
for me has been a long-standing problem, namely file backup had been
stalling on a certain to-do item. As I don't use the To-Do list I
followed advice from Support and exported the entire file to a new
file but in so doing ended up with a few people missing (so reverted
to my original file). Now all is well--i.e. there are no error
messages during the backup.
Hope this helps someone.

Hi Nick,
To delete To Dos

You can go to the To Dos from the icon on the Toolbar or View To Do List
Make sure the Drop down box at the top has All To Dos showing rather
than just General To Dos or Individual To dos.
Highlight a To Do in the list - then Options - Delete etc. You don't
appear to be able to highlight a group and delete them together. You
can highlight the group but the delete only works on the first.

If you have a lot, you may be able to use Search - Search and
Replace, search for each vowel in each To Do field and replace with
nothing and make sure replace entire field is checked - that should
find most things - but I think this may result in lots of empty to
dos rather than deleting them. You may then be able to deal with them
in the To Do List by combining duplicates and then deleting the
resulting one empty To Do. I haven't tried this.

Once the To Dos are deleted, you can purge the Master To Do Lists for
Category and Locality by going to View Master Lists - To Do
Category and under the Options button there is Purge unused - or you
may want to review and delete those you don't want and keep others.
The same with localities.
In these Master Lists you also have the option of combining entries.

Cathy

Re: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw and Legacy photos, Passage Express

2007-01-12 Thread Tracy Skegg

Here's an answer from SpanSoft:

snip
The flags you're looking for in Legacy are the little checkboxes which
appear over each thumbnail in the Picture Gallery. If you hold your cursor
over them you will get the hint Tag/Untag item for Slide Shows and
Printing.

If you then use the Must have Print flag option in TreeDraw you will
only import the pictures which have the flags checked.
snip

The tags are check boxes next to the number of the image in the
picture gallery, if that helps at all. I've tried this suggestion and
it works, now I've got to untag a lot of images across my file. I'm
learning new things everyday about how to manage my Legacy files.
Cheers

Re: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw and Legacy photos, Passage Express

2007-01-12 Thread Tracy Skegg

Just a further question - is there an Access table that I can go to
for images, to do this faster than looking through each individual's
photo gallery and unchecking each image tag I don't want in TreeDraw?
I know I've got a small file compared to others and only a couple of
hundred people have images but I would prefer to minimise the time
spent on the unchecking process.

[LegacyUG] Research Guidance Error #2

2007-01-12 Thread Mike Fry
Further to my previous message, there is a further, small problem with
Research Guidance. Marriage Events do not appear to be included in the
list of timeline events for an individual.

If they shouldn't, then it is slightly illogical to be able to add a
Marriage Event from the timeline tab. If they should, then they are
missing and would need some means of distinguishing them from other events.

There appears to be a small error in the Research Guidance operations.

Tab 1 - Review Timeline - enables the user to add to the list of
timeline events by clicking on the 'Add Event/Fact' button. This then
pops up a menu where the type of event (vital, custom and marriage) can
be selected. The 'Vital' and 'Custom' options both perform as advertised
in the on-line help. The 'Marriage' option doesn't!.

I would expect it to work slightly differently according to the marriage
 state of the individual concerned.

If no spouses are linked to the individual, then the program should
prompt the user to add a spouse to the individual. This should be as per
usual - add a new person or link to an existing individual. Thereafter,
the Marriage Information screen should be presented, allowing the user
 to add an event.

If the individual is linked with one spouse, then the program should
present the Marriage Information screen and proceed as above.

If the individual is linked with two or more spouses, then the Spouse
List should be presented, and, after the individual selects the
appropriate spouse, processing can proceed as above.

At present, when I try to add a marriage event to an individual that has
one or more spouses, the program proceeds as though there was no spouse
 at all.

The marriage itself (date place), yes. But not any other events listed

put the census address under the marriage as a Residence event, whereas,
it goes under the individual when they're single. For my couples, the
Residence events are *not* showing up in the RG timeline.

They are in fact locations. Not every country uses the same names and
naming conventions as Anglo countries. It may take some getting used to.

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Locations Database

2007-01-12 Thread Loran Braught
To start, I think I did not make sufficiently clear that I was addressing
concerns about learning the IGS Marriage record Indexing task (Shirley
Fields said you were working at it). I did not mean to refer to anything
about Legacy.

Okay, now to your concern about the Legacy geography function. First it is
crucial to input all locations as city-comma, county-comma, state-comma.
Example: Terre Haute,Vigo,IN. in all location spaces. Do not enter anything
more or less there. If you do not know one of the three slots
(city, county, state you must enter it this way:

Terre Haute,,IN.

If the location data is entered that way, Legacy will first ask if you are
comfortable with the spellings that you entered. Assuming yes...you click on
the globe at the right end of the location line to see what the US atlas
says will fill in blanks for you according the to date you have for that
location. It would advise Knox for the county before it became Vigo, etc.
It will actually show you several lines with that information (more than I
should address here beyond saying that we will focus on this and other basic
functions at our first LUG meeting Jan 27. However, I will briefly mention
that I urge folks to use postal office two-letters for the state to save
space in printing forms, etc. and I never use the USA if the address is USA.
For foreign countries use the three-letter nation acronym, such as GER for
Germany (usually the first three letters of any foreign country).

If you do click on the cross at the end of the location line you will see
the options of address, notes, or pictures. The address means the exact
street address; notes are for such comments (consider that the major notes
option, such as the name of a birth hospital or cemetery name, etc.). The
down arrow at the end of the location line refers to seeing total location
data (lets you see if you can verify or combine duplicates, etc.). I won't
step more into master lists now nor in our first meeting.

Let me know if any of this is still not clear and helpful (may just call
535-3618?)

RE: [LegacyUG] Geo Locations Database

2007-01-12 Thread Paul C. Abell
Loran,
I always use the country. For the example you give, I would use Terr Haute,
Vigo, Indiana, USA. My reason for this is to keep everything consistent.
Also, I use the full name of the state. I was directed to do it this way
years ago by a genealogist that would be well over 100 if she were still
alive. She was very meticulous in how the data was kept. I think I learned
from a perfectionist. Sometimes, I think it ridiculous, but I still do it
all the way I was taught and this was before computers.
Anyway, I like everything to be consistent. If using the country for one
country and not another is, to me, inconsistent.
Just another humble opinion. There are so many variations in the way people
do things.

Paul

RE: [LegacyUG] Geo Locations Database

2007-01-12 Thread ronald ferguson

Loran,

There is no must about any of this. There are many of us who do not use the
system you outline for a variety of reasons.
We may not like many commas in reports or on websites. The format may not suit
the countries we live in (we are not all from the USA).

If our way does not suit certain facilities the so be it. We prefer not to use
them - or find a work around and often one can.

Finally, the way we maintain our data is our choice, they way in which we
utilise Legacy and other programs is our choice.

Sherry~

ToolsGeo Location DatabaseCity type any number, perhaps starting with
1. Aren't those dates, perhaps in a language other than English?
9zenic View, , British Columbia, Canada and 30 Decembrie, , , România
don't LOOK like places, to me, but perhaps they are?

Thanks for your response.

You can't edit the Geo Locations Database.

However, I don't understand what you're referring to about dates?
There are only locations and coordinates in the Geo Location Database
and nothing in French (except the Names of the towns and provinces)

Thanks for using Legacy.

I just update my Geo Locations databases to include The Americas, to
get Canadian locations. It appears that there are many dates, in
French, and a few odd looking references that might be addresses.

Anyone have any idea why these are in the locations database? Are
they safe to remove and if so, please explain how to go about it.

Thank you

[LegacyUG] Big problem/hope some one can help

2007-01-12 Thread GH134924

Hello folks,
I do hope someone can help or has some tricks to try.

   The sad story
On New Year's Eve I knew I had had stories about problems with
computers. I had the 3.0 version of the program and I did up grade to the 6.0
version. Every thing ran well in the transferring of data to the 6.0 version.
I had a total of 800 persons on the list and about 300 on the married list.
Every thing was back when I left the program. I had cd made and then checked
them back on my computer/they ran find with all on the program.

 Then.new Years eve I discovered
that all was gone in the crash. KPUT !!!.
I even tried to run the CD that I had made on the public library computer
[cry]
they would not open up. I ran the CD program 6.0 again on my computer when I
got it BACK UP and I get the sample program nice and clear.

I checked with legacy tech. support and he gave ME sad news/ lost, gone
forever/ BYE BYE.

If any of you all maybe could help or give suggestion I would certainly
appreciate
 Thanks,

2007-01-12 Thread ronald ferguson

Bob,

I'm afraid it's getting on for bed time here (it's now past 1-00am) so, as it
may help someone to assist whilst I'm having a kip may I ask you to clarify
some points:

From what you say you seem to have your data files on CD is that correct and
have you checked whether they are still on it?
You say that Legacy 6 is back on your computer and that you have the Sample
file - I take it that you can load this OK?
Since the Legacy Techs have advised that nothing can be done would you please
tell us exactly their diagnosis or their reason for saying this?

I hope you get this sorted before I have my breakfast.

Re: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw and Legacy photos, Passage Express

2007-01-12 Thread Cathy

Thanks Tracy,
That's what I thought.
I'll continue to not include pics automatically in TreeDraw
until/unless they can pick up the preferred picture as I use those
tags to mark pics for Legacy Scrapbook/Slideshow etc.

Cheers,
Cathy

Yes the Repeat is useful when you only want some of the previously

If you want the lot, including the Source, then the Event
Clipboard/Copy and Paste the entire event is much quicker.

RE: [LegacyUG] Big problem/hope some one can help

2007-01-12 Thread Sherry/Support
Bob,

I'm not sure what you're referring to. The one correspondence I had with you
was asking about updating to Legacy v6 from Legacy v3. Did you speak with
Jim on the phone? Was your database corrupted from the hard drive crash?
If that happened and you had not saved a backup to a location other than the
hard drive, more likely than not there's not much we can do. We have tried
to restore corrupted files and sometimes we're successful and sometimes not.
It's so important to do regular backups to CD-R or an external drive, to a
website or even sending them to a relative or friend.

I'm sure several people on the list can commiserate with you as periodically
we have to let a user know that there's nothing we can do to fix his or her
corrupted file and they neglected to do regular backups. I *hate* it when I
have to notify a user that the file is toast, esp when there's not a recent
backup.

There are full backup instructions at
http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Tips.asp, in the article under Backing Up
and Restoring Family Files.

Thanks for using Legacy.

[LegacyUG] How to show step children in reports

2007-01-12 Thread Edwin Sievers
My first post folksI know it's kinda wordy but I don't know how to
condense it much and still get my question out there.

I am just getting a good start with Legacy and have data for about 50 folks in
placesome of it pretty sketchy. I like to look ahead to see what my
reports (that I want to give family members) will look like, and there is one
problem I can't seem to whip; it involves the children from a previous
marriage; e.g., I have a woman who married a divorced man with 2 children and
they now have 3 more of their own. I want to show ALL the kids on the family
view, and on any individual reports for the kids' parents, etc., but I would
like for them to be depicted with some sort of special notation in reports such
as pedigree or decendent reports..but, alas, they show as 5 children
and all of them as 5th generation decendants of my first generation
couple.and IMHO 2 of them are not. I have tried the Help steps to enter
1/2 kids but nothing really changes that I can see. The way I have worked
around this is to just put in parenthesis after two step kids the
statement: (from Danny's previous marriage) . The parenthetical statement
then shows up in the Pedigree Chart-type reports. There has to be a better way
methinks.

I use Legacy 6.0

This may be an old topic.if so my apologies, but I cannot find anything in
the archives regarding it. Is there a way of researching threads in the group
by topic so as not to bore a gazillion folks with my (kinda simple) problem(s)?

TIA,
Ed Sievers

Re: [LegacyUG] How to show step children in reports

2007-01-12 Thread Cathy

Hi Ed,

I understand you have the children showing, so you've added a second
set of parents for them. You also need to add the Child Status and/or
Father/Mother Relationship.

In Family View, right click on a child and choose Children's
Settings. In the window that pops up, highlight the child you want
and then fill in the boxes at the bottom. Click the arrow at the end
to see the available categories. This actually opens a new dialogue
where you can add your own category if you need to - or use one in the list.

This won't do anything if you haven't changed Report Options.

Currently in the Chart reports you can't show these Child Status or
Child-Parent Relationships.

However, in the Book Reports, these can be included. See the Report
Options - Include Tab - and check

Child Status and/or Child-Parent Relationship.

Hope that helps - though I'm afraid it doesn't help in the charts,
Cathy

Re: [LegacyUG] How to show step children in reports

2007-01-12 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
We all have the same problems. Most of us have
divorces and non-marriages in our families. Some of
the resulting children get legally adopted, others get
accepted or tolerated. Whene a spouse adopts the other
spouses' children, you must either have some children
showing up twice, or some adoptive parents not
showing. It is the question of legal or logical.
Good luck. Rich

look like, and there is one problem I can't seem to
whip; it involves the children from a previous
 marriage; e.g., I have a woman who married a
divorced man with 2 children and they now have 3
more of their own. I want to show ALL the kids on
the family view, and on any individual reports for
the kids' parents, etc., but I would like for them
to be depicted with some sort of special notation in
reports such as pedigree or decendent
reports..but, alas, they show as 5 children and
all of them as 5th generation decendants of my
first generation couple.and IMHO 2 of them are
not. I have tried the Help steps to enter 1/2
kids but nothing really changes that I can see.
The way I have worked around this is to just put in
parenthesis after two step kids the statement: (from
Danny's previous marriage) . The parenthetical
statement then shows up in the Pedigree Chart-type
reports. There has to be a better way methinks.

   I use Legacy 6.0

This may be an old topic.if so my apologies,
but I cannot find anything in the archives regarding
it. Is there a way of researching threads in the
group by topic so as not to bore a gazillion folks
 with my (kinda simple) problem(s)?

   TIA,
   Ed Sievers

Subject: Widows

Several of my male ancestors married widows, so I have a situation where Thomas
Austin(my 4x g grandfather) married Mary Ann Millyard in 1804. she being the
widow of James Millyard whom she married in 1797(he died in 1801) when she was
Mary Ann Bacon, how do I record her marriages to show the name changes without
entering her as two people. Regards Joe Austen in OZ
