[LegacyUG] Adding a Husband as Unknown
I have one female already with 2 husbands, but I now discover that one of the children whilst still having the same biological mother had an Unknown father. Yes I can unlink the son, but is there a way to ADD an Unknown Husband to the wife (as a third spouse), so that I may then in turn add the unlinked son back again? I've had a look through the list archives, but can't seem to lob onto exactly what I want, and the Help file in legacy doesn't exactly help either. Hope I've explained this in an understandable formatg. Thanks Dave Cripps in Tasmania David Cripps [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hobart, Tasmania Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Re: [LegacyUG] Events
Janis, I think you and I are on the same page here. Coming from TMG, it took me a little while to get used to Legacy's exclusion of Birth, Marriage, Death, and Burial from Events. I thought, If those aren't events, I don't know what are! And the complete separation of Marriage information from everything else was also a little hard to get used to. But when I discovered the Chronology tab, where all is listed, I was a happy camper again. So now I look at the Event list as the 'everything but BMDB list.' I do miss witnesses, roles and a few other features but adding those would just make Legacy another monster like TMG. I, too, think it would be a good move to combine the Individual and Chronology screens into one. Maybe it was done this way to keep the Individual screen from becoming too overwhelming and busy looking. Dennis Janis Gilmore wrote: What they renamed the feature? What if it weren't called Events? Don't let its name keep you from using it to its full potential. If it weren't called an event you would think of it differently. Think of it as your chronology. I find that I put things into the events that aren't even close to being events. For instance, the full data from WWI or WWII records, and data from the SSDI. I like seeing those details when I am looking at the chronology. Honestly, I love the main individual screen in The Master Genealogist. But TMG doesn't offer the ease of report output, and is not nearly as intuitive in its interface as Legacy. My partner in genealogical crime is my father, who (although he has served as CEO of two very large high tech companies, and continues to keep his hand in) at 77 finds a stiffer learning curve in the software to be an impediment. I want to keep him as my primary partner as long as possible! Legacy is a great answer for us - it is sophisticated enough to be a serious aid to research, it has nice reports, and it isn't as much a monster as TMG. I wonder, however, if they won't work toward integrating the Chronology and Individual screens into one Would love to see that! Dave, Unlink the child from the current parents. The word possibly, or probably if you want to add some strength to the situation, is used when I am making an educated guess as to where the event occurred. Depending on era and circumstances you can make a decent guess as to birth/baptism from where he/she lived at the time - not true with contemporary marriages. Some event notes might be in order for clarification. Also on the probably situation, I use throughout the address. If I have proof that an individual was born in Illinois but I believe he might well have been born in Chicago then I enter as , , Illinois (probably Chicago, Cook County). Same thing if I have proof it is , Cook County, Illinois, then I might enter , Cook County (probably Chicago), Illinois. I would not use probably Chicago, Cook County, Illinois if I have proof the event was in Cook County, Illinois as it means (at least to me) you have no proof on any part of the location. Re: [LegacyUG] Newbie ? on consumption as cause of death.
Wayne, As a general rule of thumb, let google be your friend! I typed in genealogy medical terms and came up with several pages containing exactly what you're seeking. Consumption is tuberculosis, but of course you'll find other terms equally mystifying. Google can help! Generally speaking, when you're literally transcribing old documents, you should transcribe them precisely as-is. Particularly as a beginner (we've all been there!) you might mis-interpret something. Whereas, if you transcribe it literally, the information might mean something to another researcher - or it might mean more to you a year later. You can always add explanations. Died of consumption [tuberculosis]. If you don't have much experience with the handwriting of 100-300 years ago, you might search for help there as well. A lot of Census transcriptions done by beginners, misread the handwriting. As you can well imagine, reading a name correctly can make all the difference in the world to your research! Re: [LegacyUG] Newbie ? on consumption as cause of death.
Wayne, The nice thing about Legacy is it provides an area of cause of death and then and area for Medical Notes. You can use these to your advantage in a few ways. If you run into a term you don't recognize, you can look it up here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwkidz/oldmedterm.htm Consumption is defined as Tuberculosis. Now you can list either as the cause of death, but I prefer to use the old terminology since it gives the family history flavor. You can put (Tuberculosis) in parenthesis to educate your modern readers who haven't done genealogy. (As you guessed, nearly all experienced genealogists have run across this word before!) Legacy also allows for [[Private]] notes that can be viewable to you, but not printed out in a report, if you select that as an option. So you can choose to define some more obscure terminology that way for your own use, or for printing in a report. Edema is one word that I've explained in further detail this way. I hope this helps. Re: [LegacyUG] Export/Import
It rather depends on how much of your setting setc you wish to include. The minimum would be the Legacy Set-up file and your family back up file ie the zip file usually in C:\Legacy\Data which would have to be copied into the Data Folder after installation and then brought into Legacy using FileRestore. There is no problem, however, in doing as you suggest and include the whole of the Data Folder and copy that to C:\Legacy, in which case, obviously, the back up file will already be there. If you back-up your multimedia files these also will be in Legacy Data. However there is a potential problem in restoring as the path(s) will be that on your machine, so if they are stored in My Documents, for example, the path would normally include your name. You may like to consider, therefore, moving them to a folder in C:\ and reassociating them with your Legacy before creating the new back-up. The help Files give a pretty good description of restoring files, btw. How about bet 7 apr 1861 and 8 apr 1861, without quotes ... -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Rob Miller Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 16:36 To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Date glitch? The 1861 Scotland census was taken on 7/8 April 1861. As I don't know which of the two dates my information was taken I input 7/8 Apr 1861. However, the sentence reads 0007 to 8 Apr 1861 (minus the quotations). The same happens if I input 7-8 April 1861. Is the 0007 a glitch within Legacy or with me? I finally input the date as 7 or 8 Apr 1861 which stays the same. Thanks for your assistance. Rob Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy?
