Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Naragtive Report Bug?
Carol, Thank You!!! I think you have just found the reason we have had reported problems with missing Location Indexes. We could never figure out why that was happening. As Cathy explained in her reply the RTF file does not support more than one Index. If you have selected both in the Index Options Legacy does not turn off the Location Index selection but it does only include a Name Index since the RTF cannot contain both. I just ran a test and confirmed that once you have chosen rtf as a report destination then no matter what you do later you cannot get the Location Index in either the Preview or a PDF file until you close Legacy then restart the program. Now I can describe the steps to duplicate the problem to the programmers in enough detail so they can find a solution. Mark, The way the new footers are formatted now I can use plain text but my email program recognizes and activate the hyperlinks so they are clickable. Lots of image-editing software knows about these tags and can take appropriate action. TIFFs can use a variety of compression methods (G4 for black-and-white data, PackBits/LZW/RLE/JPEG for color or grayscale data) as well. You can store multiple images in one TIFF file, too. BMP doesn't store additional info and can only use RLE compression AFAIK. RLE is not very good at compression; G4 is best if your data is black-and-white, LZW is best if your data is gray/color and you need losslessness, and JPEG is best if you don't mind lossy compression. (Note that JPEG-compressed TIFFs can cause older software to puke. Use straight JPEGs if you go for lossy compression; they're more portable.) BMP is very well-understood but it's not an open standard in the way TIFF is. [LegacyUG] More Problems
Besides the Error 76 problem I have encountered another. I opened Legacy to my main family file. I then closed it and opened the Sample File to see how the labels could be changed in family view. I played around with the labels and when I was finished, changed them back to the original display I had when I opened it and everything was back to normal. I then closed the Sample file and opened my main family file and all the labels were changed exactly as the Sample file before I changed them back to the original settings. Why did the labels change on my main family file when it was supposed to be closed? The main reason I used the Sample file was to make sure I didn't goof up my main family file. In the sample file I removed the Baptism label and used other labels, but I didn't like the way things were displayed so I changed them back and everything was back to normal in the Sample file. I then changed my main family file labels back to the way they were originally. The problem now is, I lost all the entries in the baptism label in the family view. The baptism entries have now been moved to the event/fact portion. I would really like to move them back to the family view, but I don't know if this can be done without re-copying them one by one. I then went back to the Samle file to see if I lost the entries in the baptism label in the family view, I didn't. I don't know why this happened, but I'm having a few problems with Legacy and Vista that I never had with Windows XP. Re: [LegacyUG] filing systems was: A question for Geoff
I set this up with the following in mind: 1) I want to find the record again!!! 2) I want my current immediate family members to find the record (my minor children also work on genealogy with me) 3) I want my children to be able to identify a needed record when they are no longer living at home. I'll email them an updated list from time to time. 4) I sometimes teach genealogy classes. This chart can help me identify records for a particular time period, type, or locality to prepare a class. 5) I have been known to assist my children in sneaking actual genealogy records into their history assignments. They can move around Excel readily. 6) Eventually, my records may be shared with others. Therefore, for me, this chart is not a replacement for sourcing records. It is a filing locating again method. I came up with it when I realized that naming digital files was waaayyy too cumbersome when I included everything that I wanted. Then I realized that it would work equally well for my paper files. Paper records go into binders in numerical order due to previous mishaps when moving. (My file folders were dumped into larger boxes by movers!) The rows at the top of the Excel spreadsheet currently include the following: #this is assigned in the order that I touch the record (similar to RIN assignments by the computer) P/D paper or digital; I currently have some of each; another goal is to have both paper an digital eventually class topic this is the title for which I've used this record previously rec type vital records, Bible, cenus, etc. country state county city Surname Maiden name even if the maiden name is not on this record, I include known maiden names here so I can search on that field Given name year year of record 1700's 1800's 1900's these columns are to identify possible records for a class since some record years might give clues to a different period (i.e.: 1900 census shows 1880-1900 birth info for those still living); I put an X in the appropriate column The flexibility of Excel makes this easy to filter or sort however I like, rearrange the columns, etc. On records such as census, I will enter the head of household, then copy paste that line to change the name info. The Excel file is also easy to send to my adult child when she is preparing a genealogy class. Like getting started with inputting genealogy, this takes time. Re: [LegacyUG] filing systems was: A question for Geoff
This word wrapped in odd places. Just to clarify: 1) yearyear of record and 2) 1700's 1800's 1900's these columns are to identify possible records for a class since some record years might give clues to a different period (i.e.: 1900 census shows 1880-1900 birth info for those still living); I put an X in the appropriate column Also, I omitted other surnames. In that column, I place witnessess and neighbors with no known relationship at the time. They may later be proved as relatives. There was a discussion in another list about what format to use for file though that was for archiving so some considerations which might or might be valid here. Some are keen to keep the RAW file, with no compression or manipulation so it can be processed or enhanced in the future. Then after that a TIFF file can be produced for storage. Re: [LegacyUG] Elizabeth Shown Mills - Splitter or Lumper?
I think the lumping can be defined several different ways. I am a LUMPER. I use Census-1930 as a master source, not identifying the county, state, detail info. This is because I have a census event attached to the PERSON that contains ALL of the information she is putting in the source. I do it my way because I personally do NOT want to have to keep flipping back to the sources to see what the Census data looked like, then back to the person - and this is applicable while I am using Legacy on the computer as well as reports I may print out. It's probably not the right way to do it, but it is a LOT easier. Seems to me that SPLITTERS have to be flippers, too. ;-) - Original Message - From: Ralf X [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Saturday, September 01, 2007 9:32 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] Elizabeth Shown Mills - Splitter or Lumper? [LegacyUG] Mills book on sourcing
Hi Listers I've also been watching the sourcing threads with interest. I'm not for or against any particular style. However, having never seen the Mills book, I was curious if the material/examples used are generic/universal (ie can be used across countries) or predominently North American. Re: [LegacyUG] Mills book on sourcing
Tracy, The bulk of the book is related to the USA when it gets into details but Ms Mills does have a *lot* of general information that is not country specific; rather it is sourcing philosophy. I also got the quick reference chart when I bought the book and on there (if I can remember correctly), probably only 5% is UK related and that is 100% source and citation examples. I am in Japan until late Wednesday night; my book is at home in Colorado. I'd be happy to answer more specific questions after that. I am not sure the book would be worth your while. The quick reference chart may be what you are looking for at a much better price. All I really wanted was the examples of how she suggests doing a census, birth record, online source, etc. and it is a lot book to go thru (and a hefty price IMO). Certainly I think the new Mills books is far superior to the first one Evidence!, but it is expensive. Re: [LegacyUG] Mills book on sourcing
Ralf, I don't think the new book is just an update of the old one. It is far superior; it is a replacement and more. It is about 6 times the size; maybe more. I was a little disappointed in the first one; the new one has so many more details. If you are going to buy the new one, I certainly would not bother with the old one as well. Hope fully that answers your question. Re: [LegacyUG] A question for Geoff
I am using the MRIN system, but I did not buy my materials from Legacy. I went to my local Staples store and bought what I needed. The system can be somewhat taxing if you are trying to get *all* your paper documents in it. I decided early on that I would only place copies of the documents in the file. I keep my originals filed in folders in my filing cabinet. By placing only copies in notebooks, I do not use protective sleeves. One advantage of this is that I can get more paper documents in one notebook. One reason I'm using the system is so I can carry certain paper documents with me when I'm doing research. Not using protective sleeves eliminates the problem of having to use tabs that tend to extend past the edge of the notebook. One thing I don't like about the way I'm doing it is that I use the little round hole reinforcers and they can be a pain to place accurately--but I have to use them because the holes in copy paper sometimes tear. Sorry for this lengthy post, but I just thought I'd throw this approach in. Jim On 8/31/07, Ralf X [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks for the information and your reply Thomas! Re: [LegacyUG] Chart printing
Bill: I don't think most people would ever want to print a chart with everyone in their database.. I for one have over 30,000 people in my database and a chart for everyone would probably be a block long - how do you print that and what would you do with it if you had it? Most people will probably only print a few generations of ancestors and/or descendants, say 5 to 10 and place them in a frame to hang on the wall. If I would try to print say 15 generations of all ancestors, my chart would probably exceed 100 pages. Most fan type charts for practical purposes are normally limited by the user to about 5-7 generations, otherwise, you cannot read the print or it gets too large to print economically. You might want to print a direct line ancestry chart which if you could get 5 generations per page, then a 25 generation ancestry chart would only be 5 pages - that would be ok. I have printed out over 100 generations like that and it is basically 2 people per generation. In Legacy 6, you can create a compact form of ancestors charts (Ancestor Chart) that is very useful for determining what lines of ancestors that you need to do more research on. You can start with the youngest person in your database for your family and create say 15 generations -- preview it first before you sent it to a printer - you may not want to print that many pages. I would suggest you try that 1st and see if that meets your needs. Chap On 9/1/07, Bill Dorothy Samson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Can anyone tell me how to print a chart with *all* individuals in my family tree data base displayed. RE: [LegacyUG] Elizabeth Shown Mills - Splitter or Lumper?
Ralf: It's more than just a tad complicated! To respond to two of your posts at once: _Evidence!_ is a 124-page book geared almost exclusively to the family historian. _Evidence Explained_ is a *vastly* expanded 885 pages aimed at a rather broader audience. _Evidence Explained_ responds to questions generated by _Evidence!_ and in it, Mills has changed her approach on a few things. Having both books would certainly be overkill. Her recommendations in _Evidence Explained_ as you cite below definitely lean toward the splitting camp although she does have some lumping suggestions too. In my opinion after struggling with the examples for a few weeks, they don't work particularly well with the current Legacy structure. I see absolutely no way of achieving the exact citation format recommended by Evidence with Legacy and, in fact, following the examples somewhat defeats the convenience of Legacy's Master Source feature. Hopefully v7 will make things easier. Meanwhile if someone has had better luck getting an Evidence-style citation format from Legacy, I'd love to hear about how it's done. I still can't see the options to click, Mitch. Yes, I can see that 11 and 12 go together, but I don't see where to click - and perhaps that is not really important. The little booklet that comes with the package, is most helpful, however - in the list report - when I printed it off, making sure that I asked for 'Spouse and Parents MRINs,' the pages that printed off do not look like what is shown. There is not two columns and there are not MRINs in one of them. Perhaps I am too picky, and perhaps I need to work with it in my own way - keeping the List report and the Pedigree charts in a separate binder.
