Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Naragtive Report Bug?

2007-09-01 Thread Brian/Support

Carol,

Thank You!!! I think you have just found the reason we have had reported
problems with missing Location Indexes. We could never figure out why
that was happening. As Cathy explained in her reply the RTF file does
not support more than one Index. If you have selected both in the Index
Options Legacy does not turn off the Location Index selection but it
does only include a Name Index since the RTF cannot contain both.

I just ran a test and confirmed that once you have chosen rtf as a
report destination then no matter what you do later you cannot get the
Location Index in either the Preview or a PDF file until you close
Legacy then restart the program.

Now I can describe the steps to duplicate the problem to the programmers
in enough detail so they can find a solution.

Hi,

I've found a problem with this report when I do the following:

After setting the preferences for both name and location indexes.
1.select preview. Both index appear.
2. Cancel preview and select either RTF or PDF and create the report.
3. The location index is not there

This had the same problem for every file I used to test it.

I'm using version 6.0.0155.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: [new LUG footer format]

2007-09-01 Thread Brian/Support

Mark,

The way the new footers are formatted now I can use plain text but my
email program recognizes and activate the hyperlinks so they are
clickable. I hope Jim keeps the links exactly the way they are now for
us plain text fanatics.

As you said, your hyperlink method appeared only as text in my footers
so I would never know there was a clickable link.

  Hi Barbara,

Welcome to Legacy and this list.
It seems that you've immediately hit a known bug :-(

Several possible solutions at the moment.

One: use Portrait orientation for your page. This has less problems
  than the Landscape.
Two: include less generations per page.
The chart will/can tell you how the following pages relate to the first.

  Three: use the Ancestor chart.

Better charting is coming in version 7.

It is probably slightly slower - especially on older machines on Parallels

I also use TNG as this is web based and can be used natively on any machine.
Not as good at reports as Legacy but fine for most of my purposes

TIFF stores a bunch of information that might be

BMP doesn't store additional info and can only use
 RLE compression
AFAIK. RLE is not very good at compression; G4 is
 best if your data is
black-and-white, LZW is best if your data is
 gray/color and you need
losslessness, and JPEG is best if you don't mind
 lossy compression.
(Note that JPEG-compressed TIFFs can cause older

 straight JPEGs if you go for lossy compression;
 they're more portable.)

[LegacyUG] More Problems

2007-09-01 Thread William Haines

Besides the Error 76 problem I have encountered
another.
I opened Legacy to my main family file. I then closed
it and opened the Sample File to see how the labels
could be changed in family view. I played around with
the labels and when I was finished, changed them back
to the original display I had when I opened it and
everything was back to normal. I then closed the
Sample file and opened my main family file and all the
labels were changed exactly as the Sample file before
I changed them back to the original settings.
Why did the labels change on my main family file when
it was supposed to be closed? The main reason I used
the Sample file was to make sure I didn't goof up my
main family file.
In the sample file I removed the Baptism label and
used other labels, but I didn't like the way things
were displayed so I changed them back and everything
was back to normal in the Sample file.
I then changed my main family file labels back to the
way they were originally. The problem now is, I lost
all the entries in the baptism label in the family
view. The baptism entries have now been moved to the
event/fact portion. I would really like to move them
back to the family view, but I don't know if this can
be done without re-copying them one by one. I then
went back to the Samle file to see if I lost the
entries in the baptism label in the family view, I
didn't.
I don't know why this happened, but I'm having a few
problems with Legacy and Vista that I never had with
Windows XP.
I monitor this list to keep up on what is going on
with Legacy and I never had any of the problems people
were having until now and my problems started when my
other computer had too many problems to try to fix and
I had to use Vista.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be most
greatful.

Bill

Re: [LegacyUG] filing systems was: A question for Geoff

2007-09-01 Thread Dawn Crowley

I set this up with the following in mind:
1) I want to find the record again!!!
2) I want my current immediate family members to find the record (my
minor children also work on genealogy with me)
3) I want my children to be able to identify a needed record when they
are no longer living at home. I'll email them an updated list from time
to time.
4) I sometimes teach genealogy classes. This chart can help me identify
records for a particular time period, type, or locality to prepare a
class.
5) I have been known to assist my children in sneaking actual genealogy
records into their history assignments. They can move around Excel readily.

6) Eventually, my records may be shared with others.
Therefore, for me, this chart is not a replacement for sourcing
records. It is a filing locating again method. I came up with it
when I realized that naming digital files was waaayyy too cumbersome
when I included everything that I wanted. Then I realized that it would
work equally well for my paper files. Paper records go into binders in
numerical order due to previous mishaps when moving. (My file folders
were dumped into larger boxes by movers!)

The rows at the top of the Excel spreadsheet currently include the
following:
#this is assigned in the order that I touch the record (similar
to RIN assignments by the computer)
P/D paper or digital; I currently have some of each; another goal is
to have both paper an digital eventually
class topic this is the title for which I've used this record
previously

rec type vital records, Bible, cenus, etc.
country
state
county
city
Surname
Maiden name even if the maiden name is not on this record, I include
known maiden names here so I can search on that field

Given name
year year of record
1700's 1800's 1900's these columns are to identify possible
records for a class since some record years might give clues to a
different period (i.e.: 1900 census shows 1880-1900 birth info for those
still living); I put an X in the appropriate column

The flexibility of Excel makes this easy to filter or sort however I
like, rearrange the columns, etc. On records such as census, I will
enter the head of household, then copy paste that line to change the
name info. The Excel file is also easy to send to my adult child when
she is preparing a genealogy class.

Like getting started with inputting genealogy, this takes time. Yes, it
overlaps features in Legacy, but it works for me.

This word wrapped in odd places. Just to clarify:
1) yearyear of record
and
2) 1700's 1800's 1900's these columns are to identify
possible records for a class since some record years might give clues to
a different period (i.e.: 1900 census shows 1880-1900 birth info for
those still living); I put an X in the appropriate column

Also, I omitted other surnames. In that column, I place witnessess and
neighbors with no known relationship at the time. They may later be
proved as relatives.

RE: [LegacyUG] BMP vs TIFF?

2007-09-01 Thread Martin Briscoe
There was a discussion in another list about what format to use for file
though that was for archiving so some considerations which might or might be
valid here.

Some are keen to keep the RAW file, with no compression or manipulation so
it can be processed or enhanced in the future.

Then after that a TIFF file can be produced for storage.

There are some links here to some further information.

[LegacyUG] Elizabeth Shown Mills - Splitter or Lumper?

2007-09-01 Thread Ralf X
Am I correct in assuming that since Elizabeth Shown
Mills includes the date a web page was accessed in the
PUBLICATION FACTS, she leans towards splitting?
(meaning you can't reuse the Master Source later on)

EXAMPLE:(http://www.bobswebpage.com/cemetery :
accessed 01 September 2007), entry for John Doe,
section 1, plot 2, grave 3

But if she had included the accessed date in the
SOURCE DETAIL instead, this would have been lumping?
(meaning you can reuse the Master Source later on).

EXAMPLE:(http://www.bobswebpage.com/cemeterydatabase),
accessed 01 September 2007, entry for John Doe,
section 1, plot 2, grave 3

I hope I'm making sense. Being relatively new to
sourcing (okay bad me) I'm finding sourcing in this
POST Evidence Explained and PRE Legacy 7.0 world a
tad complicated.

Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Elizabeth Shown Mills - Splitter or Lumper?

2007-09-01 Thread Sharon Perdue

I think the lumping can be defined several different ways.

I am a LUMPER.
I use Census-1930 as a master source, not identifying the county, state,
detail info. This is because I have a census event attached to the PERSON
that contains ALL of the information she is putting in the source. I do it
my way because I personally do NOT want to have to keep flipping back to the
sources to see what the Census data looked like, then back to the person -
and this is applicable while I am using Legacy on the computer as well as
reports I may print out. It's probably not the right way to do it, but it
is a LOT easier.

Seems to me that SPLITTERS have to be flippers, too. ;-)

[LegacyUG] Mills book on sourcing

2007-09-01 Thread Tracy Skegg
Hi Listers
I've also been watching the sourcing threads with interest. I'm not
for or against any particular style. However, having never seen the
Mills book, I was curious if the material/examples used are
generic/universal (ie can be used across countries) or predominently
North American.

Living in Australia, with most of my ancestors in England and Europe,
I don't have much need for the American sources. To justify spending
AUD$80-90 on her book, I'd need to have more than minimal usage of
sources from the book.
Cheers

Re: [LegacyUG] Mills book on sourcing

2007-09-01 Thread Mitch Mackrory
Tracy,

The bulk of the book is related to the USA when it gets into details
but Ms Mills does have a *lot* of general information that is not
country specific; rather it is sourcing philosophy. I also got the
quick reference chart when I bought the book and on there (if I can
remember correctly), probably only 5% is UK related and that is 100%
source and citation examples. I am in Japan until late Wednesday
night; my book is at home in Colorado. I'd be happy to answer more
specific questions after that.

I am not sure the book would be worth your while. The quick reference
chart may be what you are looking for at a much better price. All I
really wanted was the examples of how she suggests doing a census,
birth record, online source, etc. and it is a lot book to go thru (and
a hefty price IMO).

Certainly I think the new Mills books is far superior to the first one
Evidence!, but it is expensive.

Cheers, Mitch

Re: [LegacyUG] Mills book on sourcing

2007-09-01 Thread Mitch Mackrory
Ralf,

I don't think the new book is just an update of the old one. It is
far superior; it is a replacement and more. It is about 6 times the
size; maybe more. I was a little disappointed in the first one; the
new one has so many more details. If you are going to buy the new
one, I certainly would not bother with the old one as well.

Hope fully that answers your question.

Re: [LegacyUG] A question for Geoff

2007-09-01 Thread Jim Keener
I am using the MRIN system, but I did not buy my materials from Legacy. I
went to my local Staples store and bought what I needed. The system can be
somewhat taxing if you are trying to get *all* your paper documents in it.
I decided early on that I would only place copies of the documents in the
file. I keep my originals filed in folders in my filing cabinet. By
placing only copies in notebooks, I do not use protective sleeves. One
advantage of this is that I can get more paper documents in one notebook.
One reason I'm using the system is so I can carry certain paper documents
with me when I'm doing research. Not using protective sleeves eliminates
the problem of having to use tabs that tend to extend past the edge of the
notebook. One thing I don't like about the way I'm doing it is that I use
the little round hole reinforcers and they can be a pain to place
accurately--but I have to use them because the holes in copy paper sometimes
tear. Sorry for this lengthy post, but I just thought I'd throw this
approach in.

Jim

RE: [LegacyUG] Lost Icons

2007-09-01 Thread Jean Jones
Mystery solved!!!

I enlarged the Individual's Information window and all the icons / buttons
appeared. I reduced it with the standard windows button and all was fine.
Evidently, I had resized the window by grabbing the edge and moving it in.
At some point in the resize process the buttons disappear.

All is fixed. Thanks for the support.

Re: [LegacyUG] Chart printing

2007-09-01 Thread Leon Chapman
Bill:

I don't think most people would ever want to print a chart with everyone in
their database.. I for one have over 30,000 people in my database and a
chart for everyone would probably be a block long - how do you print that
and what would you do with it if you had it?

Most people will probably only print a few generations of ancestors and/or
descendants, say 5 to 10 and place them in a frame to hang on the wall. If
I would try to print say 15 generations of all ancestors, my chart would
probably exceed 100 pages. Most fan type charts for practical purposes are
normally limited by the user to about 5-7 generations, otherwise, you cannot
read the print or it gets too large to print economically.

You might want to print a direct line ancestry chart which if you could get
5 generations per page, then a 25 generation ancestry chart would only be 5
pages - that would be ok. I have printed out over 100 generations like that
and it is basically 2 people per generation.

In Legacy 6, you can create a compact form of ancestors charts (Ancestor
Chart) that is very useful for determining what lines of ancestors that you
need to do more research on. You can start with the youngest person in your
database for your family and create say 15 generations -- preview it first
before you sent it to a printer - you may not want to print that many pages.
I would suggest you try that 1st and see if that meets your needs.

I believe there are other programs that are capable of doing this, like
Genbox. But I wish to know if Legacy is capable of this function.

I am running the deluxe version.

Re: [LegacyUG] A question for Geoff

2007-09-01 Thread Mitch Mackrory
Jim et al,

Thanks for the feedback on systems. One problem I have is a lot of
older certificates mainly from the UK and some from South Africa.
They used to produce them in foolscap size and even larger. The UK
GRO now produces certificates that are more reasonably sized but I
have trouble finding archival quality sleeves to suit my old
documents. I have been to Gaylords but cannot find anything. Has
anyone solved this one, please?

Thanks, Mitch

I am using the MRIN system, but I did not buy my materials from Legacy. I
went to my local Staples store and bought what I needed. The system can be
somewhat taxing if you are trying to get all your paper documents in it. I
decided early on that I would only place copies of the documents in the

You might want to try a scrapbook album instead. Mine is a 12 x12 and is big
enough to hold my larger certificates when a regular sheet protector can't.
Check out your local craft stores for scrapbooking supplies. They are
archival safe now and have sheet protectors in them to slip in the
documents.

RE: [LegacyUG] Elizabeth Shown Mills - Splitter or Lumper?

2007-09-01 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Ralf:

It's more than just a tad complicated!

To respond to two of your posts at once: _Evidence!_ is a 124-page book
geared almost exclusively to the family historian. _Evidence Explained_ is
a *vastly* expanded 885 pages aimed at a rather broader audience. _Evidence
Explained_ responds to questions generated by _Evidence!_ and in it, Mills
has changed her approach on a few things. Having both books would certainly
be overkill.

Her recommendations in _Evidence Explained_ as you cite below definitely
lean toward the splitting camp although she does have some lumping
suggestions too. In my opinion after struggling with the examples for a few
weeks, they don't work particularly well with the current Legacy structure.
I see absolutely no way of achieving the exact citation format recommended
by Evidence with Legacy and, in fact, following the examples somewhat
defeats the convenience of Legacy's Master Source feature. Hopefully v7
will make things easier. Meanwhile if someone has had better luck getting
an Evidence-style citation format from Legacy, I'd love to hear about how
it's done.

Thanks,

Ralf

Thanks Renee,

I am using something similar now; I was after something less bulky.
If my wife sees me going to JO-Ann, it could cost em a lot more than
just the protectors. Thanks for confirming I am on the right track
(i.e. there is nothing else).

Re: [LegacyUG] For Geoff

2007-09-01 Thread Tish
I still can't see the options to click, Mitch. Yes, I can see that 11 and
12 go together, but I don't see where to click - and perhaps that is not
really important.

The little booklet that comes with the package, is most helpful, however -
in the list report - when I printed it off, making sure that I asked for
'Spouse and Parents MRINs,'
the pages that printed off do not look like what is shown. There is not
two columns and there are not MRINs in one of them.

Perhaps I am too picky, and perhaps I need to work with it in my own way -
keeping the List report and the Pedigree charts in a separate binder.

Thanks for your offer, Mitch, I am not sure if it would help; or not.

Tish

Tish,

Apart from slides 9, 11 12, you can go at your won pace. Slide 11
12 go together altho I don't think that is very obvious. 12 shows the
option to click. Would it help if I documented what those two (or
three) slides are showing?

Cheers, Mitch

I have a huge request. Could - would you please make a CD of the MRIN

right

through putting data into the filing system?

It would be a treasure, and one that we could study to our heart's

What a help it would be, and I do thank you in advance. Looking forward
