Thanks Ron. I'm not sure how long ago I went through that whole boring
exercise, although it was in the distant past Perhaps I didn't allow
for the strength of the Advanced Set Living feature, thinking along the
lines that I needed to have some sort of date of birth in there for it to
work. As you've pointed out, it would have markedly reduced the number of
manual changes I had to make. I'll certainly remember it for the future!

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding new locations on the fly

2007-12-09 Thread Michele Lewis
Actually, there is a feature where it will tell you if it is a new location!
(I do have the autofill too).

Let's say I have never used Lumberton, Lamar County, Mississippi, USA before
(if I have, then the autofill will pop up) but if it is new a box will pop
up that asks me if the location is correct.

This gives me the opprotunity to see if I am spelling it correctly
(sometimes I type so fast I misspell a location I already have) or if it is
truly a new location.

Michele,

No problem. A thought has just come to mind - a quick tip:

If like me, one has a very large number of locations it becomes impossible
to remember whether or not one has used it before. If you have "auto
complete locations" set then if the location is auto completed the location
is already in use; hence no need to check the short location. Obvious, I
know, but sometimes attention needs to be drawn to the obvious ;-)

Ah! YES! This is a shortcut for what I am trying to do! I have Legacy set
up so that if I try and enter a NEW location that I don't have yet it will
ask me if the location is correct. Then, I will hit the blue error and
immediately input the short location. PERFECT! Thanks so much, Ron!

Michele,

I may be misunderstanding you, but I take it that you mean when entering
an

address into a Residence Event, or Birth, Death etc. you would like the to
be able to enter the short version at the same time. If so, yes you can.

At the end of the field where you enter the location there is a blue down
arrow, click on this and it takes you to that entry in the Master Location
List then click Edit which shows both the long and short version as you
accurately describe. You can then just edit the Short Location. Once this
is

done the same Short Location will be used for each entry of the Long
Location.

As far as I know there is no way of automating the full process - how
would

the PC know what you wanted to put there in the first place?

If you only enter locations in the short form there is no possiblity of any pc
or program knowing what the long location should be (and conversely)

RE: [LegacyUG] Individuals with no birth date and marked as living - A big problem

2007-12-09 Thread ronald ferguson

Maureen,

That is correct. But conversely it will find all those with marriage dates
and/or an issue (I am not sure how many generations it will look at but
certainly 2 - i've just tried that ) and where appropriate will set them to
deceased.

This can considerably reduce the number of entries which have to be changed
manually.

Advanced set living, on the >Tools menu, will set everyone older than
(whatever age you set) as dead - even those with no dates, if they are
ancestors of those who are dead. This probably won't get everyone, but
unless you have long ancestral strings with no dates it should get nearly
everyone. I liked what it did on my database.

Re: RE: [LegacyUG] 5 lines of text on family view....how?

2007-12-09 Thread jcspin
In family view, if you right click in the area where you see the 4 lines
(birth, died, etc.) a customize display window will open. If there's nothing
selected for 5th field name, you will only see 4 lines. Select whatever you
wish to see in field 5 and it will appear after you close the customize window.

Good luck!

RE: [LegacyUG] Adding new locations on the fly

2007-12-09 Thread ronald ferguson

Michele,

I may be misunderstanding you, but I take it that you mean when entering an
address into a Residence Event, or Birth, Death etc. you would like the to be
able to enter the short version at the same time. If so, yes you can.

At the end of the field where you enter the location there is a blue down
arrow, click on this and it takes you to that entry in the Master Location List
then click Edit which shows both the long and short version as you accurately
describe. You can then just edit the Short Location. Once this is done the same
Short Location will be used for each entry of the Long Location.

As far as I know there is no way of automating the full process - how would the
PC know what you wanted to put there in the first place?

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding new locations on the fly

2007-12-09 Thread Michele Lewis
In the reports options menu, you can tell it to print the short locations
which is nice (it is nice to have the option to do this). When dealing with
researchers that are outside of the US the long forms are more appropriate.
If you are sharing with a US researcher that knows all the abreviations then
the short forms are easier to read.

However, as far as I can figure out, you have to add the sort forms manually
as a seperate step. I was hoping I could do it at the same time.

Wow, I had no idea it was so complicated. I only use one version for all
of my locations. It never even crossed my mind to enter two different
ones for each location. Isn't it possible to have the reports print out
which one you want without having two versions entered in your Master
Source List? Now, I'll have to go try that out.

Re: [LegacyUG] Individuals with no birth date and marked as living - A big problem

2007-12-09 Thread Maureen Chambers
Arnold Sprague wrote: "...many individuals...marked living...no birth
date..."

Arnold, I had a similar problem and the only way I was able to correct it
was as follows:

Search>Find>Detailed Search>[Look for]Individual>[Where to look] Living>[How
to look] Equal To>[What to look for]Yes

select Second Condition
select And

[Look for]Individual>[Where to look]Birth Date>Equal To> [leave blank]

Select Create List (2nd button at bottom)

This will create a list of every person living who does not have a birth
date. You then need to look at and edit each individual - this can be done
from the list screen by selecting from the right side of the list screen
first the Detail tab (so you can identify your person if you don't recognise
them easily from the list), then select the Edit tab and change Living? to
No.

I found this took me a lot of time, but at least once it was done, my
database was correct. It also taught me to be sure to check the box for
Living/Not living on the individual's screen when initially entering an
individual for whom I did not have a birth date or a date of death.

Did you "click any of the descriptive fields to the left of the lines" as
described in my response below? If so, what did you see? What I see are
"field names" which I can change by clicking on the little box to the right.
Perhaps you have nothing selected for the fifth line.

In the *Family View* click on any one of the labels (Born, Died...) and
it will open the "Customize Display" screen where you can choose what
you want for the 5th line. I think you're asking a different question.
Whatever is available for data entry in the Individual Screen is what's
available. You can't change that. You can only change what you want to
view in the Family View.

I can customize the 5th field, (default death cause) and select age at

death which is blank for living persons. Is that what you mean? I
cannot see my

age there.

BTW Diana's original message was 5KB rich text format, a very brief
message with a tiny font hard to read. Leon's reply included all of
Diana's message

but converted to plain text, (size only 4KB), which is easier to read,
takes
less archive storage and people in remote areas on dialup really
appreciate
reduced download time. I truly hope no-one takes offence to these
comments.

In family view, there are 5 custimizable fields to the left of the
data you have entered., e.g., Born Bapt

Died
Bur
Age

The last field (Age) is one that I have customized.

If you "Right Click" on the 5th field (in the example above, the Age
field), then select customize you can then select any field you want

to be displayed and the associated text for the field description.

  Nope, Ruth--that's still not it.

The color differences on the Name List differentiate Male from Female (at
least on mine). The color change indicating that a source has been added are
on the Individual's Information screen, where you originally enter the data.

"There are up to five lines on both the Husband and Wife box of the
Family
View that can display information. Each of these information lines can
be
changed to other pieces of information you might want to view instead.
To
change the lines, click any of the descriptive labels to the left of the

RE: [LegacyUG] How to make a Master Source of the IGI

2007-12-09 Thread M. Brenzel
Well, as many of us, myself included have said - this is a very flexible
program and you can record your information pretty much any way you
want. Personally, even if someone tells me that so-and-so was born on
such-and-such date, I record it in the birth event with the person who
told me as the source. If I find physical evidence that substantiates
what the person told me, that gets a high surety mark where the person's
report has a low one but both get credit as a source.

I actually treat both the same. If Aunt Mary tells me that Cousin John
was born then I make an event "InfoRcvd" that records the fact that
Mary said so but I do not make an Birth event for cousin John based on
that info. I make an event "InfoRpt" for John that says maary says he
was born .

Birth, Marriage, Death, Burial events are created in my database only if
there is an original contemporary document available as a source.

Why? Why is the IGI any different than a family member saying that
something happened on such-and-such date? List the event as you would
any other bit of information and put the IGI as a source. If this is a
birth record, then when you get true information from a birth record (if
possible) then it gets added as a source for that information. You can
always swap Alt Birth with the Birth information, for example.

I'd probably commit suicide before using the IGI as a Master Source!
I add an event to the person called Verify and list all IGI info in that
event as a task to be verified.
Indexes (of any kind) are not sources but merely clues and hints to the
original documents which ARE sources and which I put in my master Source
List.

I am about to tidy up my Legacy file now that I know a little more.

I want to start with all the entries that are there from the IGI and
also to add many more so I want to do it right.

Yes I know it is my list and I can do it any way I like so long as
anyone can find the information BUT I would like some input as to how
others have managed the IGI as a Master Source.

2007-12-09 Thread John S. Adams
Nope, Ruth--that's still not it.

The color differences on the Name List differentiate Male from Female (at least
on mine). The color change indicating that a source has been added are on the
Individual's Information screen, where you originally enter the data.

I don't want to be a pest and I know we all want to know when Version 7 will be
available, but if it is soon, I will stop working on my cousin's family story -
it's about 3500 pages on her father's side and 4000 pages on her mother's side
- and wait for the new version, if it's coming in the next couple of months.
Any idea when it will be available? Just a little inkle - I should keep going
with what I'm doing now? I should wait a little while?:)

With the Family view open use the shortcut keys CTRL+z to open Options
Select the Colours tab
Half way down the screen on the left find Text Colours with a row of buttons
to the right.
Select Contents
Select the colour you want from the pop-up box.
Select save

You now should have set the field name colour to change

Re: [LegacyUG] Relationship designation

2007-12-09 Thread Ruth Nerud
The Relationship will show how a person is related to the central person in the
story. In the story I'm working on, my cousin's, it will show how she is
related to each person in her family story, be it 1st cousin twice removed or
husband of 1st cousin twice removed - or grandfather or grandmother. Otherwise
she would look at a name and say - okay, how am I related to him or her. The
Relationship designation brings it more into perspective, I think.

Would someone elaborate on what exactly Leslie is talking about. I'm not
sure what is meant by printing a relationship to a family group sheet.

Thanks,

I would have a "Passport" event and a "Travel" or "Tourist" or "Expatriate"
event.

Once he is a naturalized American citizen, he's a tourist or Expatriate ---

Re: [LegacyUG] How to make a Master Source of the IGI

2007-12-09 Thread Wynthner
I actually treat both the same. If Aunt Mary tells me that Cousin John was born
then I make an event "InfoRcvd" that records the fact that Mary said so
but I do not make an Birth event for cousin John based on that info. I make an
event "InfoRpt" for John that says maary says he was born .

Birth, Marriage, Death, Burial events are created in my database only if there
is an original contemporary document available as a source.

Re: [LegacyUG] Baptism events in wrong field

2007-12-09 Thread Hope Bagot Bees
Well, thanks, but it still leaves them in the Events field and not in
the general view place where I want them to be. Back to the manual
exercise!

Bruce Jones wrote:

I don't know if this helps, but, if you don't want ANY of the
"Baptism" events, edit the event from the master lists and change the
event name to "Christening". Would that help?

Elizabeth,

Thank you for the clarification - got it in 2 :-)

I've had a close look at this and I am afraid I cannot see a way of doing what
you wish, not even bulk deleting the records after the transfer have been made.
Sorry.

Sorry, after I wrote it I wondered if I would confuse people! On the
Individual's Information page if there is a blank field for Chr but in
the events/facts field there is a baptism event, it is possible, by
right clicking the options tab to be given the suggestion to swap the
baptism event to the chr field. If you do that, the details move to the
Chr field below the born field, but the event/fact designator is still
there as baptism but with no further information. It is then necessary
to delete the event.

I think all this started when I originally moved all data from an old
Reunion file to Legacy and, for some reason, the baptism event wasn't
merged at the outset with the Christening field - leaving a lot of
baptisms in the events field.

Does this now make sense?

I have a large number of Baptisms in the Events field.

Understood

When dealing with each individual I can swap the information for the Christening
field, but this involves a lot of mouse work as I then have to delete
the baptism event.

What sort of information and where is it, and if you are swapping from the
Christening Event to the Baptism Event why are you deleting the latter?

I have a long list where there is a baptism in the
events field, but is there any way I can swap all of them with one
action rather than each one individually, please?

Swap what from what to what ( eg. the field name, the information)?

Re: [LegacyUG] How to make a Master Source of the IGI

2007-12-09 Thread Michele Lewis
Good point, Kristen. There is a BIG difference between the IGI and the
Ancestral File. If you are searching from within Legacy there is a thing at
the bottom of the screen that you can click that will take you to the IGI
page itself and you can see immediately if it is an extracted record from
microfilm or a submitted piece of info from an individual researcher.

The problem I have with the Ancestral File is two-fold. They used to post
the submitter's info and you could contact the submitter and ask them WHERE
they got their information. However, many times the address was old and
bad. It is a moot point now though because FamilySearch is no longer
providing the submitter info so I deem the Ancestral File pretty much
worthless.

Rich:

I agree that it's important to caution newbies regarding the massive
errors
in the IGI. but I think it's equally important to make a distinction
between

the IGI databases. The IGI does contain a good number of extracts from
early church records in the form of indexes. I've found these to be quite
accurate, and invaluable in pointing me to films containing the original
records. Those who find matches in the IGI just need to learn to read the
bottom of the screen to find out whether the information came from an
individual doing family research (definitely in the low credibility class)
or from extracted church records (considerably higher credibility, and
easy

to follow through to the original record on microfilm).

It is NO different, but some researchers, a lot of
them NEWBIES, find the IGI and give it as much or more
credability than hearsay or undocumented notes. By the
time they understand what IGI actually is, they have
wasted a lot of time and money. SO I and others here
will continue to mention this for each flock of
newbies.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to make a Master Source of the IGI

2007-12-09 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
We seem to be on the same page. The trick is for
newbies to know what to look for. When we have shown
someone that the IGI exists, we should also warn them
of its surety issues at the same time. That is my
soapbox. I was a person who believed what was sent to
IGI, and twenty years later PROVED a membership in a
society was not only wrong, but fraudulently created.
There are still people joining that group using that
info (I believe).
