[LegacyUG] v 6 AND 7 Child-parent relationship not found

2008-06-06 Thread Pat Hickin
With both Legacy 6 and 7 when I am adding a new event and am ready to
add the source, I click on the book icon and get the message
"Child-Parent relationship not found." I click on the OK button -- I
have to do this several times or it keeps reappearing -- then finally
it disappears and Legacy automatically closes. The info I have entered
has been saved however. This does not always happen, but it has
happened with both 6 and 7, which I think is strange.

It may be that I sometimes double-click without thinking, but that does
not necessarily solve the problem. Today in Leg 6 on a trial entry I
double-clicked the book icon intentionally and nothing happened, then I
immediately single-clicked and got Run-time error 405 "Unable to show
modal form within this context." Clicking OK immediately closed Legacy.

I think it's weird that I got the same "Parent-Child" error with Leg 6
AND 7!

Any ideas?

Pat

Re: [LegacyUG] German Locations

2008-06-06 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
IMHO, what I do is, I combine these three into one field,
Evangelisch-Reformierta Kirche, Edenkoben; because the English transliteration
is Edenkoben Reformed (?) Church (or Lutheran), Then I would determine if the
town is in Pfalz (Palatinate), or Bayern (Bavaria). Some of each of those
'states' contained and controlled, in the past, parts of the other one. I use
the 'what the place was called on the date'  location list, so would work at
eliminating one of them. Since the time frame was not mentioned (not needed),
whether the states were independent at the time is for you to determine.
I know this is off topic, but I answered anyway. I have to wait for money
deposited to buy L7. (Tommorrow)

Any idea how to put it so the mapping progrom will map it? (or where it is??)

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Location

2008-06-06 Thread Cathy

Hi Martin,

The Geo Location list hasn't been updated since introduced and is
just a guide which may be helpful particularly in the US.

I don't use it.

I prefer to research locations for myself - and the mapping has made
it easier to explore the neighbourhood once you've found it.

So now my locations are slowly getting Lats and Longs added from the mapping.

There are many other new databases that don't show up in Legacy 7.

RE: [LegacyUG] accessed date

2008-06-06 Thread Bill Bienia
Janice,
Since this is data that will change with each citation, the accessed date is
included as a field on the Citation details screen, rather than on the
Source screen. It shows up correctly within the parentheses in the final
source-citation.

Note: There is a glitch to be aware of. There is no space after the closing
parenthesis and the following text. Adding a space at the start of the next
element of the citation detail will insert a space there, but it will also
insert an unwanted space in the bibliography. I have reported it via this
list a while ago, so hopefully it will be fixed in due course.

Is there a way (even a workaround) to insert the accessed date into the

Looking forward to exploring other functions. Thanks, Legacy!

Keith,
Based upon your question, I don't know if you are aware of this...but...the
first part of that location, Evangelisch-Reformierta Kirke, is the name of a
church which translates to Evangelical Reformed Church. The American
counterpart, the Evangelical and Reformed Church, joined a 1957 merger which
formed
the United Church of Christ. If you do a Google search for "Edenkoben,
Germany," you will find quite a bit of information about this locale.

There you can change the Wording from Husb to Husband like in Legacy 6.

I cannot reproduce your 2nd problem. It may have something to do with

searched only for Find Individuals with Missing Marriage Date.

The search ONLY returned a list of AKAs - error!

No!

I set up my Name List and Index view as you did then did the Search you
did. The result of this search was a list of 590 names including
Alternate and Married. Removing the option to show the A&M names, the

Better yet they should write a whole separate program for you with separate
pricing options. How dare they expect users of windows programs to actually
have the browser that comes built into the operating system.

I hope you also got your discount from microsoft since they supply IE7.

This programs cost under $30 and I simply cant believe the people whingeing
about it took a few hours to get a password (on the free version no less).
Before they there were people that had been so loyal as they had the program
since v5 or earlier and they should get a free upgrade.

Honestly some of you people are incredible.
If I was you I would consider being a true american and sue them for selling
you a product under false pretences or something - don't let them get away with
it.

Of course you may also consider suing the people who make the communication
tools that don't work with windows and IE7 but tht would seem a bit unfair, I
mean one person makes software that works with the operating system and one
makes software that doesn't and guess who you complain to. And yes, IE is as
close to being a part of the operating system as anything can be.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 6 and Legacy 7

2008-06-06 Thread Ken McGinnis
The first install is considered a new install and you are asked where you want
to install to. Any future installs know where you first installed to and is
considered an update to that Legacy. To move Legacy you cannot simply copy
things from one folder or drive over to a new location. If you try to simply
move the files the next update will still go back to the original locatin.

There is a small trick that you can override the way the setup works if you
need to move Legacy. It's simple. Download the Legacy setup once again from
our website and save it to your computer somewhere for example your desktop.
Then rename the setup you just downloaded to the name of LegacyNew.exe and then
run it. When the setup starts it checks it's own name and if it's called
LegacyNew.exe it will run as if it was a new install and you will be prompted
where you want to install to.

Keith,
Based upon your question, I don't know if you are aware of
this...but...the
first part of that location, Evangelisch-Reformierta Kirke, is the
name of a
church which translates to Evangelical Reformed Church. The
American
counterpart, the Evangelical and Reformed Church, joined a 1957
merger which formed
the United Church of Christ. If you do a Google search for
"Edenkoben,
Germany," you will find quite a bit of information about this
locale.

RE: [LegacyUG] Geo Location

2008-06-06 Thread Martin Briscoe
I just thought that I would give it another try.

The mapping is nice when it works but all too often it cannot find the
location and then can be very messy navigating to the correct position. Well
over 90% of my locations are in the UK so most of the time I don't put the
country. Perhaps if you could set a default country for mapping so if it is
looking for "1 Any Street, Anytown, Anyshire" then it would not offer me
every "1 Any Street" in the world. It would be more logical if it centred
on the right town or at least the right country.

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Sentence Structure

2008-06-06 Thread Cathy

Hi Carol,

This may already have been answered as I've been away from the
computer for several hours after glancing at the mail this morning
and I don't think any new Legacy mail has come in.

Either in the View > Master Lists - Event Definitions
or when adding or editing an event see the Edit Event Definition button.

You can write the sentences however you like using the codes provided
to add the data fields.
Don't forget to include [Sources] at the end of the sentence if you
want your Sources to be seen and also [Notes] if you want to include
the Event Notes in the output.

If you want to change the sentence for just one use of a particular
event, use the Sentence Override tab.

You could easily look at the name list to see.  I have 4 Frank McKains
and would have been rather frustrated if the program kept coming back
and telling me the name was already used or something - is that what
the "dup check on entry of a person" does?  I (for one) am glad it is
not there.  I know I have dozens of repeated names (only the years and
other details help tell them apart).

Bill,

What you are asking is more going to get handled with custom
sentences for reports and events.

However, an additional married name rule has been requested that
would be a variation of the current second married name rule that
would include, for wives, her birth name after her given names; eg,

Wife Married name : [HerGivenNames] [HerSurname]/[HisSurname]/

eg. If Jane Doe married John Smith, her married name would be changed
to Jane Doe Smith by this rule?

Re: [LegacyUG] Dup Name Check

2008-06-06 Thread Trippsibs5
Hi Larry & wife,
How about a duplicate check BEFORE entry of a person?
When adding husband or wife or children, I choose the option 'Link to an
existing ...'. That choice immediately transports me to the Name List. A
quick search by surname tells me if that person is already entered in the
database. If I find a suspect, I read through any or all of the 6
information tabs (detail, family, notes etc) to confirm my suspect. If none
are found, I then close and return to Family View to 'Add a new ...' My
temper has been restrained since I began using this procedure.
To check for dups already in the database, select Tools from the top
toolbar, select Merge from the list, then select Find Duplicates.
Follow the recommendation to backup your file before merging and read up on
Automerge before moving too quickly through the list.
Hope some real veterans of the Find Duplicates & Automerge will post some
tips for us.

Does Legacy have the ability to do a person/name dup check on entry of a
person? Several programs do, but I cannot see where that is done within
legacy, and if not, that feature really needs to be added. I have seen her
(my better half) more than once lose her temper because the person she just

So does Legacy do what most other genealogy software programs do?

Only 2 items - the Source Converter and the actual ordering of wall charts

been unable, after repeated requests, to get Millenia to tell us what they

RE: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7

2008-06-06 Thread Janis Gilmore
Kristen,
I think this only happened to JL because he chose a destination folder other
than the default. He was going to put 7 into his program folder (which I
considered, as well, but did not do). My download was very smooth, and I
don't think you need to worry about it. Just make a good back-up before you
do it.

JL, correct me if I am wrong in what I have told her here about the problem
you encountered.

I'm probably the average person, and when I installed Version 7 it did
not install over 6, it installed into the middle of it, alphabetically
between iSearch and Legacy Home in a folder of its own. So now I have
v.7 embedded in v.6. They both still work fine. I'm wondering if I can
just pick up the v.7 folder and move it somewhere else if I ever want to
get rid of 6. As I recall I chose the installation directory to be
Program Files but I got this arrangement instead.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Background Question

2008-06-06 Thread Robert57P via Gmail

1)
When updating Legacy, does that automatically also update Legacy Charting?
Or do we need to monitor/update each individually?

2)
Is there a way to flip the BACKGROUND picture in Charting? I know you can
flip an INSERTED picture, but can't figure out how to flip it as a
background.

Or, conversely, is there a way to change the transparency of an INSERTED
picture?

ie: What I'm looking for is to BOTH flip and reduce the transparency of a
picture.

Thanks.

For right now there is the option of using the old format or using the
sourcewriter for your sources. There is not a source conversion option
available right now.

Just think... there are probably as many ways sources are entered as there
are users of Legacy not sure how they would be able to create a user
friendly conversion tool that would work for everyone or at least most.
Heck I know I don't even have all of my sources standardized I can't image
trying to write something that would work for a huge user base.

You can't do away with Legacy's sentences altogether, but you can do the
next best thing.

If you are using all the fields, change the sentence structure for each
Event to something like "[EventName] [Desc] [Date] [Place][Sources]".
You can change the order, include punctuation or omit fields as
appropriate.

If you only use Event Name and then put all the information about the
Event in Notes, then use the "If Desc, Date and Place are empty" field
and enter "[EventName][Notes][Sources]". (Without the quotation marks,
of course.)

It will take a little while to set up the sentences if you use a lot of
Event Names, but once it is done your Events will be in exactly the
format you want.

I think it's far better to write addresses normally -- Maple Grove
Cemetery, Dodge City, Ford County, Kansas, USA -- and then change the

The install pasword only gives you the standard version. You need the
customer number from the email to enable the Deluxe version.

From receipt of purchase confirmation email to receipt of customer number
email took 4 hours and 34 minutes: 11:34PM to 4:08AM.

John

Very frustrating--I am a paid customer. I wanted to upgrade to the 7.0
Deluxe from my 6.0 Deluxe. First I downloaded the free 7.0 version and
then purchased the upgrade. In the meantime, I was told I would be
emailed the install password (used to be family for 6.0) so I could at
least play around with the 7.0 standard.

Alas, I got no such email and the recorded message on the Tech line
(long since closed) had the OLD password.

Does anyone know the new one for 7.0? I was hoping Legacy would keep up
with their tech recorded messages--don't release 7.0 until you have that
in place. Very frustrating to any customer, free or paying.

thanks

2008-06-06 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I guessed that, but the FamilySearch and other transcripts for a specific
location, will have a date range of many years, and especially in the Germanic
lands, the 'town' may have been traded/conquered/abandoned/sold multiple times
during the time frame. That is what I was trying to advise to get more reaserch
in. A good example in USA is, as the British colonies, expanded accross the
continent, all layers of government were constantly being discected to smaller
areas. In my family I have a town which was found in 3 different states (while
my family was there), and 13 different counties. The Central European area has
similar problems. I use Animap for tracking the USA places, and am waiting for
the equivalent in Europe. It may be out there.

[LegacyUG] my comments on the new release (v7)

2008-06-06 Thread Janis Gilmore
To all of the folks at Legacy,

I have only had a day or so to begin to find the new features in Legacy 7.
However, I congratulate all of you on a well-conceived product, which
addresses so many of the needs that I had with version 6.

My favorites:

1. The new SourceWriter (which I have barely begun to use) is just great. I
also like the size and presentation of the preview boxes. Really neat and
clean graphically. I source according to Mills and her _EE_ , and the few
sources that I have entered are just outstanding. I was previously a major
splitter, but it looks very much as if I will be moving toward lumper
territory.

2. Mapping, it would appear, requires some tweaking of place names to get
just what you want - and then some moving of pins. Once I get one the way I
want it, however, it's nice to be able to use Snag-It to capture part of it
as a jpeg or other format. I can edit the capture (picture) later in
Photoshop or other software, add a border, etc and insert it in a report
later.

3. Married names included in the name lists is wonderful. I have really
missed that feature in TMG. I like the fact that married names can be
indexed, too - greatly enhancing the usefulness of any book/report that one
outputs/publishes for others.

4. The improved search functions are great - I love the ability to find
missing sources, among other things.

In a short first acquaintance, I think it's a great product. I hope it will
have a big impact on the genealogical community. Sourcing was driving me
crazy, and I had actually ordered the intermediate and advanced tutorials
for TMG (which I used formerly), with a possible thought of moving back
over. With these new advances, I won't have to think about that.

I encourage everyone, even the most computer-savvy folks, to watch the short
video tour of 7. I found out a number of things that I might not have bumped
into for a while otherwise.

(One tiny, tiny gripe. Sure do wish marriages were an event, rather than
being treated separately. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] German Location Names?

2008-06-06 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
There are two locations naming systems.
1. Name the place how it was called on the date of the event. Takes a lot of
research activities to pin down each of the various places a city may have been
in over time.
2. Choose a date that all locations will use as to where they are. I used to
use this until in a 20 year period, the countries of Sweden, France, United
Kingdom of Great Britian and Northern Ireland reorganized most of their
counties and parishes for equalization of populations per place (don't know if
it worked).  For that I changed to #1. Find an atlas printed before 1960, and
compare to a current one for each of those countries.
So you must first decide which method you will use 100% of the time, or use
choice 3. which is a hybrid of both of them, which is currently used by Old
FamilySearch. Currently FS uses different choices for different areas. For
Germany it used the boundaries existing in 1870 for identifying provinces the
various cities were in. I don't know what the other cut-offs are. I saw it
printed out on a paper at the LDS Libray, but lost it in my files a few years
ago.
I hope this clears up the mud.

Keith, I've run into the same problem with these same areas.  I too would be
interested in getting them corrected.  While we
know that Edenkoben is the name of the town, but I've wondered if "Reinland"
and "Bayern" might be our equivelent of a
county, but possibly the different time periods used a different name.
Counties, towns and even states have changed names
before  so I think that a possibility.

What are the dates linked to each address??  Just curious about the time
frames.  Do you have several entries under each
spelling;  are they all uniform to a specific time frame?

Hopefully someone else can jump in with more complete and corrective
information o this.

Joseph

Re: [LegacyUG] v7

2008-06-06 Thread gtempleman1
These are two seperate things. The newsletter is *generic* information
automatically sent to *all* subscribers.

If you received/read Ken's message earlier today he said: "We are still sending
out emails to those who get the free upgrade. Sorry but it will probably be
another couple days before we are finished. We can't send them like a
newsletter because too many of those end up to be considered spam so we are
running them through normal email accounts to improve deliverability."

So the bottom line is that you are in that group and the emails are being
processed. I'm sure it takes a bit of time for a small company to manually go
through the sales lists for the past few months to see who qualifies and then
create the individual emails.

Re: [LegacyUG] best practice for information collaboration

2008-06-06 Thread Susan Daily
Paul, there is something called "intellishare" - you can read the Help
file to learn a little more about it. I've never used it, so can't
give the step by steps to take. You might search the archives for
"intellishare" also to see what the regular users of it have to say.

Here is part of the Help file:
"After an agreed upon interval of time, all members of the group
return a copy of the family file to the Keeper for merging and
reconciliation.
The Keeper then follows this procedure:
Import all copies of the family file into the master copy (after
making a backup of course).
Press the Merge button and choose Find Duplicates.
>From the Merge Options window, click on the Special Searches tab and
choose the IntelliShare option. ..."

I think it would help you with your issue.

RE: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7

2008-06-06 Thread ronald ferguson

I haven't a clue as to how it got installed there! I guess to remove 6 you may
have to go to the register and delete it in the Millenia folder but you may be
able to do it using the uninstall file in the Millenia 6 folder.

BTW others have asked how to install one version when two are installed, and
other than using the Register, using the uninstall file in the Legacy folder is
the only way.

Jack there are two places where the wording can be changed.

The second is in the Marriage Information Screen - Wording Options tab.

[LegacyUG] Re: Dup Name Check

2008-06-06 Thread Scrapcat2

I agree with checking the Name List with each new individual. It's
surprising how often you find the person married to a different person. The
reference
you used may be showing just one marriage, but in reality, the person has
been married before and is in your database. I'm also careful with names like
Sally, Abbie, Eliza, etc. If the reference shows one of those names, I go back
and make sure they are not list under Sarah, Abigail and Elizabeth. Using the
Name List as a check is a great way to find out more information.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Pre-release - SUCCESS! off topic reply

2008-06-06 Thread Trippsibs5
Kris wrote:

I'm going to a Family Reunion in less than 2 weeks and decided to try
printing a descendants chart using the pre-release version of Legacy
Charting. I have to report that the resulting printout was FABULOUS!! I
had 5 generations, printed in color, with 272 names, pictures, range of
lifetime (e.g., 1856-1904 or 1950-). I didn't want to clutter the boxes
with too much information, just wanted a great visual for all to see and
find themselves and relationship to others.
I was able to "grab and pull" the chart margin (top/bottom) from 11" to
22" (the size of the color copier it would be printing on), and I was able
to move the various generations up and down en masse to better fill the
page, and also reposition some individuals to spread out some crowded
areas. The chart was 8' long. After fiddling with it for a pleasant
visual format, including changing the borders on the boxes and using a
generational color scheme, I saved the file using the "save as" feature.
The next day I added a few more pictures to my database and pulled up the
existing chart. The new pictures were there, but I don't recall if I had
to do a "refresh" or "update" to my existing file (sorry, just don't
remember). I saved the chart again, and then used the "publish" button to
save it as a pdf. I took the file on a USB flash drive to Staples
(stationery/office supplies store) copy center and they printed it on photo
quality paper. It turned
out just the way I wanted it!! (and just the way it looked on my computer
screen). It took about 3 hours to print, but the resulting chart is
absolutely gorgeous!!
I haven't heard anything about Legacy Charting [pre-release] for a while
now and wanted to remind folks of this option. With all the griping and
complaining lately, I also wanted to post a POSITIVE message and to say
THANK YOU to Millennia Corp for such a great product!!! I'm just thrilled
at the result. I know the chart will be the centerpiece of the reunion and
I can't wait to show it off.
Kris in Texas

Kris,
I know your chart will be a hit. They told me the the family tree chart for
my Mother's 1950 something Family Reunion was a hit.

6 generations on one chart.

They started with a blank 9 something foot by 5 something foot paper on the
dining room table after the Thanksgiving dinner of 1953 dishes were
cleared. The project began with promises to complete long before the
already scheduled Christmas diner.
At the end of Summer 1954, when the 1900+ entries were meticulously hand
printed on the chart, the then 20 something graphics artist looked at his
grandfather and said 'I have an idea'.

They trecked that huge paper out to the backyard, spread it on the grass
and took a picture.

They developed the print and each family attending the 1955 reunion
received a 3 something foot by 2 something foot copy of the tree.
Since then, many more copies have been passed out and passed on to family
members. The original is still in the possession of the, now
great-grandfather, graphics artist grandson. I just found that my mother
has a copy of the poster sized negative, so I'll be able to print more and
keep the family tree of this Pennsylvania roots family going on and on.
May Your tree will not only be a centerpiece for the reunion, but the
beginning of a family tradition.
Regards, Jane Tripp

2008-06-06 Thread JLB
Perhaps the thought process is consistency. Some sources sort well by
type. As you said, census records. Also newspapers. Also email. So
why not stick with the same thing all the way through? Then I don't
have to wonder Did I sort this one by type of by name or by location?
Also I looked up what Geoff Rasmussen was doing (on their website he
wrote an article about it) and it seemed to make sense. But still, to

Elizabeth:

Grouping by location is a fine way to handle certain records. Most
people
handle census records just that way and many others group vital
records by

location.

As Angela pointed out, grouping by family is problematic when you
run into
an extended family in a census. And what do you do if you're lucky
enough

to find records for several of your lines in Cutter's 1915 _New England
Families_, for example? (I have 23 different lines in that handy
book.)

Of
course it would be ideal to go to the original records, but what if you
just
can't because they no longer exist or are not available to the public?
Would you create 23 separate master sources--one for each surname?

You can certainly group by family if you like. Legacy is flexible
enough

to
make later changes relatively easy. I've grouped and regrouped more
than

a
couple of times myself.

Re: [LegacyUG] no maps in Master Location list

2008-06-06 Thread Susan Daily
JLB, do you have Internet Explorer v.7 installed? That is required to
use the mapping option.

If you do have it installed, some people with Norton have noted a
problem showing maps. The first time I used it, no maps showed. But
when I checked back later it did. And sometimes it only loads halfway.
This might have to do with available computer memory, so always try
again, or maybe shut down and restart.

[LegacyUG] FW: my comments on the new release (v7)

I am forwarding my own message to the list - I sent it at 1pm EST, and it is

At any rate - wouldn't have re-sent, except that I really did want to
express my thanks for a great product - see below.

The Reformed Church was most emphatically not Lutheran. I grew up in
that church, and the founder, Zwingli, had major theological differences
with Luther over several things, most notably the interpretation of the
Lord's Supper. (Excuse me if I seem to be nit-picking). In America,
the Evangelical church and the Reformed church merged in 1934, but I do
not know what happened on the German side.

I've read everything new I can find on Legacy 7, but I can't find the
source converter.  Help file says it's  under Master Source options.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?  In the Master List there is
"source" and "source type", and neither has the "Source Converter".

Thanks.

[LegacyUG] Version 6 backups under version 7

It has been reported on this group that the underlying database format has
changed for version 7. Existing version 6 databases will be automatically
converted to the new format when version 7 is installed. What happens if it is
necessary (after version 7 has been installed) to restore an older backup
created with version 6? Will version 7 also convert the older backups to the

It "feels" like we should be able to click on the push pin and drag it
to where we want it to be, but I know that doesn't work. Is there a
complicated reason why that is not an option? I'll take a simple "not
even possible." I don't need a detailed explanation as to why not,
since I probably wouldn't understand it anyway! :)

Thanks to all of you who have taught me so much about Legacy (and

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 Research Guidance , Fire Fox

2008-06-06 Thread Cathy

Hi Barb,

When the Internet is used from within Legacy - the Home Page and the
Mapping and the IGI search - then an IE control is used.
You'll see that the IE temporary internet files folder has the stuff
you've looked at in Legacy.

When Legacy sends you to a Browser window, it sends to your default
browser - in my case Opera.

So, don't forget to go into IE periodically or set it up in your
cleaning program (I use CCleaner) to delete IE temp internet files and cookies

So for mapping to be working, you must have IE7 installed on your computer.

RE: [LegacyUG] Mapping Event Addresses

2008-06-06 Thread G. C. Oliver
Linda,
Thank you for your reply. I have spent many hours moving address and other
information out of Master Locations. In an effort to conform to the format
of City, County, State, Country I moved everything to Event Addresses that I
had on a location. All this was in preparation for the mapping feature of
V7. Now that I understand that it is only the Master Location that may be
mapped I cannot go back.
In the process of this I had mapped all of my Event addresses with GPS
coordinates on Google Earth. I also purchased a handheld GPS unit for
headstones in large cemetery's and old family home sites, etc. that do not
conform to current day addresses.
Although disappointing this omission of the Address Mapping feature is not a
hindrance to my work.

Thanks again,

I use the following way of recording cemeteries:

Name of town - name of cemetery, county, state, country

ie: Dodge City - Maple Grove Cemetery, Ford Co., Kansas, USA

This is recorded in the burial location. That way, I can move the "pin" on
the maps right to the cemetery. I suppose you could add the plot info in
parens after the cemetery's name and move the pin right to the place of
burial.

You could do the same thing for any kind of locations that you want to
pin-point. In the events, place of Residence could be Dodge City - 908 A
St., Ford Co. Kansas, then you could pinpoint the exact location of the
house.

I list the town first so that all locations are together in the location
index.

My V6 (still waiting for 7) has option to import from gedcom created by
other programs, so may I ask why you need someone else to import the file
and then create a gedcom, why not simply have person with TM make a gedcom

The surnames and places are from present day Czech Republic. PAF supported the
Unicode character set, but apparently Legacy does not - at least not yet.

Thanks for the follow-up Rich. I cut and pasted your "Ølstøren" into a
location in my Legacy db and it displayed correctly. So I next looked at the
Character Map (via the ribbon) and both of those "O" characters with the slash
were already in the Legacy character map.

In my case, the special letters that are already in the character map appear
fine, the ones that do not appear in the map are displayed as a "?". I am only
missing 5 letters that I need.

I have not seen a Legacy response to this question yet.

Thinking about what I have done, I suspect that because I have the alphabetic
list set to Swedish, so all the extra letters/names/places sort properly in ALL
lists, it may be a result of the above mentioned setting. I remember having
done it, but forgot what I did to accomplish this. Since Swedish is in the
available languages for reports, I don't know if that affects anything. Also, I
had originally used the Alt- to create the previous mentioned note-list.
My characters have always printed on Legacy reports. Here is an example of a
name.
'Ølstøren' Some servers may change this now. What should show up is the
Norwegian character O with a slash through it, 1 capital, 1 small. This may be
a good test.

When I changed my locations to Scandinavian characters, I created a fake
person, named Mr. Dummy, and in the notes copied Capitals and smalls for all
characters, and also included Frence and Spanish, so when I needed one of the
'more than the spaces available' characters, I could find them in one place,
not needing to go to the Windows pages. I then went to the Master list,
Locations, and editted the spelling, by pasting the characters as required.
Since it can sort them by nation, state, county, town; the unfixed ones will jump
out in one place. And you can change a state name once (also county), then
copy paste on top of the others. A lot easier than using the Alt- tool.

[LegacyUG] Sources - Master and Detail

2008-06-06 Thread Markie Flint Blackmon
I've always been a "splitter" until now, but with the new V7 Source
Writer, I've been manually converting my sources, specifically census.

I've made one Master Source for the 1850 Carroll County Ohio census and
multiple source details for numerous families scattered about in
different towns in Carroll County. In the Detail Text field, I put the
all the Household information from the census.

When I run a Family Group Report that includes source citations with the
same Master Source but totally different details, the source citations
at the end of the report are treated as if they are the same; i.e. the
truncated "subsequent citation" format is used, and the details don't
appear for any citations except the 1st occurrence of the Master.

Does anyone know, if this by design, or a bug?

Thanks much,
Margaret

either globally or for an individual marriage, but the defaults should
be what would be expected.

I get "Husband" and "Wife" in ALL situations. Even when the "This couple did

according to the Options/Customise/View "Edit Default Marriage Wording"

I've reported this as a bug, along with a couple of other "niggles". But
basically I'd like to say how smoothly the whole thing went. Possibly
because I haven't been whingeing and whining about having to wait etc.

V7 really has lived up to what was promised, albeit a long time after we
initially thought it might come along. Other than this bug I've only come

Re: [LegacyUG] Coordination Desk Top-Lap Top

2008-06-06 Thread G OLIVE
Keith,

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago on this subject. I used parts of
many suggestions and this is what I came up with.

1. All of the primary Legacy and attached (or possible attachments like
pictures,PDF's etc) files will reside on a USB drive.

2. Buy a really big USB drive. I found a 8GB on sale at Circuit City for
$39.00.

3. Group everything under one folder with subfolders on your desk top hard
drive. Mine is under My Docs, Genealogy, Legacy File.

4. I then copied this entire folder to the USB drive. Mine was about 4.5 GB.

5. I changed the drive letter on the USB to Drive letter (X) on the desk top
and the Laptop. This way no matter which of the two machines it is plugged
into it is always Drive X.

6. I downloaded a free USB syncing program called All Way Sync and installed
it on the USB drive. The sync program was then set up to keep the Legacy
File folder on the USB and the Desk Top hard drive identical. That way I can
move things into or change files in eather place and All Way will keep them
identical.

7. The last step is to make sure Legacy is set up on both machines. I then
put the USB drive into the Laptop and opened my Master Legacy file on the
USB drive. As all of the linked pictures were on the desk top I had to re
link them to the copy on the USB drive.

8. I back up the Legacy file and multimedia everytime I make changes. The
backup file is on both the Laptop and Desk top. Once a week I backup all
data files to an external harddrive.

I have been using this method for about two weeks without a glitch. I just
upgraded to Version 7 without a problem.

Hope this helps.

[LegacyUG] V7 Potential Problem Reports

2008-06-06 Thread Phil Stanger
HI

I have just received V7 and am very happy with it. However I have a small
problem with generating Potential Problems Reports. I prefer to have my
surnames all in upper case and have set this in preferences. (Incidently, I
set this in the the new set up procedure that appears on installation but it
didn't seem to stiick.) Now when I generate a problem report it shows the
potential problems I know about, but also flags every entry as a problem
with the reason 'surname all in uppercase'. I expect I am doing something
silly here, but I can't see what. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Any suggestions?

It "feels" like we should be able to click on the push pin and drag it
to where we want it to be, but I know that doesn't work. Is there a
complicated reason why that is not an option? I'll take a simple "not
even possible." I don't need a detailed explanation as to why not,
since I probably wouldn't understand it anyway! :)

Thanks to all of you who have taught me so much about Legacy (and

Dede,

Go to the correct location and right click on the map. You will be asked if
you want to make this the spot. Bingo"!

Did you right click on the icon toolbar? If you do that, you will be able

RE: [LegacyUG] Married names

2008-06-06 Thread ronald ferguson

Art,

I don't have a problem. But what do you mean by AKAs - the old ones or the
Married name? They are *not* the same. Selecting the include Married Names
option does not complete the old style AKAs.

Re: [LegacyUG] Dup Name Check

2008-06-06 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
What I do myself, when I have a stack of documents to key in, I go to the name
list and search for all names on each page first. If I find some matches I
write in the margin, the RIN for all  people that I find. A good example, on
one document I found two cousins, one of mine and one of my wifes' on the same
page. This became proof that we are both 8th and 9th cousins to each other. So
in my DB the missing 4-5th cousins inbetween were the only people that were
needed to be added in. I have found when I don't pre-search, I always have to
do the Merge later anyway, so have found the time I saved has convinced me to
ALWAYS check first.

Hi Larry,

No Legacy doesn't have a Duplicate Name Check on entry.

I suggest your wife gets into the habit of just entering a name and
then flicking to the Index View to check whether they are already
there before entering more information -or looking for the name in
the Index View before adding anything.

It's a feature that has been often asked for but I can't recall why
it isn't added. It's not a feature I feel a need for so which is no
doubt why I can't recall.

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Location

2008-06-06 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
What is the population of the place; Kingston upon Thames. I have found some
locations in USA with under 500 people are randomly not found.  I have come to
expect them to not be there and have not kept a list of which weren't found,
because it seemed futile. If the database is improved later, they may show up.
I 'created' my own L/L numbers using maps and my rulers, as guesstimate.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Sources - Master and Detail

I've always been a "splitter" until now, but with the new V7 Source Writer,
I've been manually converting my sources, specifically census.

I've made one Master Source for the 1850 Carroll County Ohio census and
multiple source details for numerous families scattered about in different
towns in Carroll County. In the Detail Text field, I put the all the
Household information from the census.

When I run a Family Group Report that includes source citations with the
same Master Source but totally different details, the source citations at
the end of the report are treated as if they are the same; i.e. the
truncated "subsequent citation" format is used, and the details don't appear
for any citations except the 1st occurrence of the Master.

Does anyone know, if this by design, or a bug?

Thanks much,
Margaret

After creation of my chart, I'm able to publish one or two pdf files that
show up correctly. After that I get blank pdfs. It will calculate pdf file
sizes of 1500kb but once published the size drop down to 2kb. I have changed
several characteristics of the chart but nothing makes any difference.
