[LegacyUG] Multiusers

2008-11-28 Thread Paderick Lundy
I am thinking of making a purchase of Legacy software but I have a question
first. Does this program have the capability of being installed on a
website so individual members of the family can can log in and add their
information and the results of their research?

I have many cousins who live all over the country and each seems to have
quite of bit of information on the various branches of the family. It seems
that this sort of arrangement would be the easiest method of creating this
particular family genealogy.

Thank you,

[LegacyUG] using two computers

2008-11-28 Thread Hope Bagot Bees
Can anyone give me some quick advice please? I have Legacy 7 deluxe on
my PC but when I try to compare two databases - using the split screen
facility - the two databases seem to become corrupt, or perhaps I am
entering detail into the wrong one but I don't think I am.

I wonder if it is possible to download Legacy 7 to my husband's laptop,
enter the deluxe number and then have two different databases open on
the two computers side by side when comparing will be easier. Having
said this, I now realise that perhaps it won't then be easy to copy
detail from one to the other but I could then tag people that need
amendment in the master database and tag those individuals in the other
that are missing from the master. I will still have to do the merge
though...

Has anyone experience of merging databases or copying information from
one to the other, without corrupting either or both?

Thanks,
Elizabeth

RE: [LegacyUG] using two computers

2008-11-28 Thread ronald ferguson

Elizabeth,

You do not say what/which database(s) are being corrupted, are they both in the
same format eg Legacy7, and what exactly are you doing - in my experience just
looking does not have any effect?

In the second part you are getting close to talking about networking 2 PCs, and
yes it can be done - I do it (although with Open Office as it happens) and it
is necessary to give read-write consent to at last one of them. I suggest that
you read up on this subject as it is diverse, not appropriate for this list.

RE: [LegacyUG] Multiusers

Joseph,

In short, No. Legacy is an Access based database for the storage of
genealogical data. It also has the facilities for publishing that data in both
hard copy and web format (html).

What you are looking for seems to be a form of Wiki, or an editable Web site
(by approved persons presumably). I would initially advise caution otherwise
you will end up with a mess. I recommend that all changes must be approved ie.
someone decides albeit yourself or one of your relatives.

I do not know of an off the shelf program for this - I haven't looked - if I
wanted one I would write the web scripts myself, but you may find something on
Google. I have just thought, I think Genes Reunited in the UK allows multiple
edit facilities and can be populated initially using a Gedcom. I would still
recommend approval for changes (even if it is a joint decision - remember a
camel is a horse designed by a committee though) and your individual databases
for storage; if I didn't think Legacy was the best on the market for this I
wouldn't use it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Template for Book Question

2008-11-28 Thread Janis L Gilmore
Oh, Wynther, such a can of worms you open. :-)

We have widely divergent views on this list, as you know. I would never
import any data into my database - only what I enter by hand goes in there,
and I not only look at the other researcher's sources, I go to the original
source, when possible, to assess it myself.

I loved it when _EE_ came out because it simplified my life - instead of
thinking so hard and working it out on my own, I suddenly had this great
go-to guide. Others, of course, feel the opposite - that _EE_ creates
unnecessary busy-work.

For me there is no point in doing the work, if I don't leave a really good
trail.

Lundy, what you want is The Next Generation (TNG) software ([LINK:
http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php]
http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php), which is a Web based Genealogy
program that will do exactly what you want to do and it is only $30. There
is also a free web program phpGenView ([LINK: http://www.phpgedview.net/]
http://www.phpgedview.net/) but does not have near the control you get with
TNG. Both programs use the MySQL database backend, which allows better data
handling and control. I highly recommend TNG for it is hands down the best
Web based Genealogy program out there.

I use Legacy on the desktop and TNG on the Web and they work pretty well
together. You can access my web site at [LINK:
http://www.overtonmedia.com/netgen/index.php]
www.overtonmedia.com/netgen/index.php. There are about 7 different
frontends that you can setup with TNG and you can see those in the demo of
TNG at their site.

[LegacyUG] Re: [LegacyUG] Source Template for Book Question

2008-11-28 Thread steve
Wynthner, my answers

1. The first one is hard to say since none have come back and stated the
source was wrong.

2. Depending on how I read your question determines the answer. If I
receive data with sources, I do my best to validate those sources but
sometimes it is just not possible as some is captured from the courthouse
and I don't have access or the money to go there an validate that they
wrote it accurately. When practical I ask for an image of either the source
record or their notes. If I receive a GEDCOM file with no sources and
depending on the person who gave it to is whether I trust the information.
Even then I use it as just leads that I begin researching from and try to
falidated it myself.

3. I agree to a point with your last statement. Genealogy is not an exact
science and therefore we work with a lot of dirty data, that is data that
is second hand or even third hand and a lot of it is misinformation. Take
the Census for example. The Census records stored at the US Archives for
example is not the orginial Census record recorded by the Census taker but
a copy and sometimes a copy of the orginial and that is why there is a lot
of errors in the records and that does not take in consideration the errors
from the orginial Census taker recording the wrong information. So even if
someone provides source information it does not mean it is right. I have
found many mistakes in books that were well sourced but their logic was
flawed or the facts they had at the time was limited and led to the wrong
assumptions.

I am thinking of making a purchase of Legacy software but I
have a question first. Does this program have the
capability of being installed on a website so individual
members of the family can can log in and add their
information and the results of their research?

I have many cousins who live all over the country and each
seems to have quite of bit of information on the various
branches of the family. It seems that this sort of
arrangement would be the easiest method of creating this
 particular family genealogy.

 Thank you,

Re: [LegacyUG] using two computers

2008-11-28 Thread Hope Bagot Bees
Yes - both databases are Legacy 7 ones. I had my own family file and
found a professional genealogist had gone considerably further back in
the family (all meticulously sourced) than I had. I have gedcoms of
various branches from the other person, which I have tried to merge with
my own. This is where things went wrong. I now have the situation
where I have my own database which has had recent births and deaths
added (within the last month) but with only some of the new material.
There is duplication in the small gedcom files I've downloaded (where
they overlap) and I am finding it unmanageable to merge the new material in.

I fear that if I go back a long way to start again from a previous
version of my family file, even if I get all the new stuff (from the
gedcoms) in successfully, I will then have lost the latest data entered
within the last six months.

Intellimerge went completely haywire when I last tried to import
something, so now, apart from re-typing all information, including the
myriad of sources for each piece of data, I am stuck as to know how to
proceed.

Any advice welcome.
Thanks, Elizabeth

Elizabeth,

You do not say what/which database(s) are being corrupted, are they both in the same format eg Legacy7, and what exactly are you doing - in my experience just looking does not have any effect?

In the second part you are getting close to talking about networking 2 PCs, and yes it can be done - I do it (although with Open Office as it happens) and it is necessary to give read-write consent to at last one of them. I suggest that you read up on this subject as it is diverse, not appropriate for this list.

Ron Ferguson

[LegacyUG] Error Generating Web Pages With Legacy 7

I have been using Legacy for several years and recently upgraded to version 7.
I recently added several new individuals to my family file bringing the count

Before we really start changing stuff can I suggest that you have a look at
InternetCreate Web PagesFormatting to ensure that create the surname index is
still checked.

Try FileFile MaintenanceCheck/Repair. After the first run make any changes
suggested then run it again. See if that works. If not shut down your PC leave
for 10 minutes and try creating the pages again.

If that doesn't do it make a note of all your web settings and reset (bottom
right button). Failing that go to C:/Legacy and delete Web.usr and try again.

This is assumes that you are using Create web pages and not printing a report
in html. Nor do you state which type of web pages you are using. If the above
doesn't wotk then it may be helpful to know.

Thanks for your quick response.

I tried a couple of your simpler suggestions (the Check/Repair maintenance
feature and also the Compact Family File) first. Neither corrected the
problem.

Before trying any of the more complicated suggestions (cold starting the
computer, resetting the Web Page Creation option, et al), I did something I
probably should have done first (but I guess I was just too stubborn). I
just closed the Legacy program and opened it again. That did it. Simple.
Duh!

Thanks again for your help.

[LegacyUG] Citing a Source multiple times

2008-11-28 Thread Dave Keeney
Citing a source multiple times (with different detail) to the same event
(e.g. birth) seems to act differently with version 7 than it did with prior
versions.

Have others noticed this or might I have missed a setting somewhere.

Example: I have SourceA (book) that gives birth information on two different
pages. I add the source with Detail - page 1, and then again with Detail -
page 2. It used to show up as two sources, one with detail page 1 and
the other with detail page 2. It now shows up as one source with detail
page 1.

Why on earth would you cite the same Source twice? Just cite the Source

page numbers.

So how does this multiple sourcing appear in a report? And, by the way, I
can use the same source for different pieces of data (birth date, death date

RE: [LegacyUG] Citing a Source multiple times

2008-11-28 Thread Dave Keeney
Because when entering a lot of data from a book I do it a page at a time.
And it takes way too long to examine every person to see if they already
been source with another page in the book.

That's why on earth.

Sorry I don't do it just like you do.

Why on earth would you cite the same Source twice? Just cite the Source

If you know you have two details in one source, why don't you just edit the

Citing a source multiple times (with different detail) to the same event
(e.g. birth) seems to act differently with version 7 than it did with prior
versions.
Have others noticed this or might I have missed a setting somewhere.

Example: I have SourceA (book) that gives birth information on two different

pages. I add the source with Detail - page 1, and then again with Detail -

page 2. It used to show up as two sources, one with detail page 1 and
the other with detail page 2. It now shows up as one source with detail
page 1.

Re: [LegacyUG] Citing a Source multiple times

It does use Ibid. when you tick to do so on the OptionsCustomizeSources.
However, you may be using the new Source Writer and there are some problems
with citations of that which I believe are being corrected in the next
update. For most reports, the Basic Source system does not present the
problem of failing to cite different detail for a repeated source on a
subsequent fact.

What you have described as multiple sources for different facts is not what
Dave was asking. He was asking if you have a source that gives the birth
information on two different pages why you couldn't have two citations of
the same source with different detail.

The citation format (meaning presentation in reports) should have
nothing to do with whether you should be permitted to enter the source
more than once (with different detail). The reporting mechanism, when it
encounters this situation, should handle it at that time (i.e. throw one
away if it deems necessary in order to follow somebody's rules).

Yes It only happens with the new source writer templates. The old style still
works even in version 7.

Thanks Barb, I just did some further testing and it appears only to happen
this way when using the new source writer templates.

I've sent an email to Support to see if this was their intention.

I'll just not use the source writer templates until I find out for sure.

Dave: I understand what you are trying to say. I too use a book to source
different information on various pages.
You are right, version 6 use to show, for example the birth source in
Jefferson County History and Atlas and the detail page xx and then the
death would be sourced as Ibid, page yy. This looks nice on reports.
Version 7 nolonger uses the Ibid. And it does repeat the first detail
used completely neglecting the following detail information. This has got to
be a serious bug!!

Correct that's not what I'm asking.
The multiples sources look fine to me on reports.
Blah, blah, blah, page 1.
Ibid. page 2.

At least in the previous version. I haven't looked at the reports in version
7 because I can't seem to get multiple entries in version 7.

So how does this multiple sourcing appear in a report? And, by the way, I
can use the same source for different pieces of data (birth date, death date

for example) for one person and cite that source multiple times with
different detail, but that certainly isn't what I'm understanding you to be
saying.

Why on earth would you cite the same Source twice?

I just realized that I often do this. I might have a source of Aunt
Sally. She might give me someone's birthdate in a letter on one date,
and the person's birthplace in a follow-up letter on a later date. I
record this as the same source with 2 different sets of details.

Since I don't have V7 installed at the moment I can't tell if this
behavior is configurable (nor can I confirm it). But I certainly
wouldn't appreciate it.

[LegacyUG] FYI about family group sheet on 7.0.0.76

2008-11-28 Thread Jennifer Trahan
I just downloaded the newest update 7.0.0.76, and almost went crazy b/c Legacy
was combining all my sources for a single event into a single footnote on a
family group sheet. However, when I went to the Sources tab on the Report
Options screen, I noticed there was a new option called If an event has
multiple citations, combine them into a single paragraph. There is a checkbox
next to the option that is defaulted with a checkmark. Therefore, if you are
like me, and do not like this combining of sources for an event, then don't
forget to uncheck the box. I thought something was wrong at first b/c I wasn't
used to this option. Just wanted to save everyone a lot of grief and
frustration.

[LegacyUG] Citing a Source multiple times

2008-11-28 Thread Dave Keeney
Update 7.0.0.76 fixed this issue for me.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Citing a Source multiple times

Citing a source multiple times (with different detail) to the same event
(e.g. birth) seems to act differently with version 7 than it did with prior
versions.

Have others noticed this or might I have missed a setting somewhere.

Example: I have SourceA (book) that gives birth information on two different
pages. I add the source with Detail - page 1, and then again with Detail -
page 2. It used to show up as two sources, one with detail page 1 and
the other with detail page 2. It now shows up as one source with detail
page 1.
