Re: [LegacyUG] Spam: a tangential question

2009-08-08 Thread Mary Meyer
I'm not sure this question can be answered, but at the outset I will say
that I live overseas in a country where internet ()including e-mail) usage
is highly "monitored" (by gov't internet "police"). I receiving the message

entitled "Spam from 'Legacy'" at 10:43 am (according to the Inbox listing),
and the one entitled Spam (that starts with "I apologise") at 9:34 am.
In other words, I received the second one before the first one. I'm
curious
as to how that could happen. If someone has an explanation, it needs
to be in plain English. My first post. Thanks!

[LegacyUG] Source text colour

2009-08-08 Thread Noddie

Hi
I have not used source writer much and wondered about the red
highlighted text that now appears when you add a source to

the family page ie Born
 Chr
 Buretc.
The text quite bright and I wondered if it is possible to change this
to something more unobstrusive. I realise the red stand out

and this could be the reason behind the colour.

Hope this is clear and would love any comments on this please.
Kind regards

RE: [LegacyUG] Spam: a tangential question

2009-08-08 Thread ronald ferguson

Mary,

The easiest way to picture how this works is not to think that when LUG sends a
post it uses a direct line to your Gmail account who then have a direct line to
your PC. This is not the case.

The post will follow whatever paths are available to get from LUG to Gmail and
similarly from Gmail to you, these may not be the shortest paths, simply they
are available at that time. It is therefore, perfectly possible for the first
post to take a longer route than the second post.

On the other hand living where you do

Gwen,

I'm not entirely certain as to whether I have got the correct screen, but if
so, try Options>Customise>Colours, click the bar and then "Contents" (I assume
you have the latest update - if not ignore the bit about clicking the bar) and
select the colour. I also strongly suggest that you save your colour scheme
using the save button as it is not uncommon for the scheme to be lost when
problems are hit, and a new install becomes necessary.

Out of fairness to you I went to your link, followed the directions and
was rewarded with more than 33MB of useless text files. There is no way
I can discern how this "Free" information can be integrated into Legacy.
As this list is for Legacy, Legacy add-ons and all things Legacy, I
can see where there is some, shall we say, annoyance about your posting
of that link. Unless you can show how this "Free" info can be safely
integrated into Legacy you owe everyone an apology.

[LegacyUG] Adoption Question

2009-08-08 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Using Legacy Deluxe 7.0.0.9. Neither Help nor Customize give any clues, so
. . .

I have a child with known birth parents (the Browns) and known adoptive
parents (the Petries). There may be a relationship between the two couples,
but that is currently unknown. I've entered the child (Hannah Brown) as a
daughter of both sets of parents and noted her Child Status as Adopted by
the Petries. The only place I see any indication of the adoption is on the
Assigned Sources screen for Hannah and on the panel next to the Name List
(buried under the Family tab). There's nothing I can see that appears on
Hannah's Individual Information screen to indicate she had two sets of
parents, and nothing prints in Descendant Book Reports for either set of
parents regarding the adoptive situation. Is there a flag, icon, or a
setting somewhere that I'm not seeing? I don't want to lose track of this
situation and would like to see it noted somehow in the Descendant Book
Report. Is that possible?

RE: [LegacyUG] Adoption Question

2009-08-08 Thread CE Wood
On Hannah's Individual Information Screen, add the Event - Adoption. Enter
the information you have regarding the adoption.

The indication that she has two sets of parents is on the Family View
Screen. Under her information on that screen, there are icons, one of which
is Parents (a couple with white hair). If you have entered her as a child
of both sets of parents, there will be a box to the lower left of the
Parents icon that will have a 2 in it.

When you click on the Parents icon, she will have two sets of parents shown.
There are boxes at the bottom of that Parents Screen: Child Status,
Relationship to Father, and Relationship to Mother. For each highlighted
set of parents, enter the appropriate from the drop-down list.

In the Descendant Book Report for any one of the 4 parents, she will show.
At her generation level, the Event of her adoption will also show. You
should also experiment with the Report Options>Include Tab for the report,
on which there are options to include Child Status and/or Child-parent
relationships.

Ila,

For alternative first names, or nicknames, I include them in the Given Name
Field in quotes. These can then be used by Legacy in reports eg. "Poly resided
in ." but excluded from the name field in the same reports.

Search for "quoted names" in The Help file search box for further details.

Hi
I have not used source writer much and wondered about the red
highlighted text that now appears when you add a source to

the family page ie Born
Chr
Bur etc.
The text quite bright and I wondered if it is possible to change
this to something more unobstrusive. I realise the red stand out

and this could be the reason behind the colour.

Hope this is clear and would love any comments on this please.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source text colour

2009-08-08 Thread Noddie

Hi again

I have gone into the screen suggested and still cannot seem to get
the right one for the 'red text' which my blue text for the Data text
is updated to when you add a source to either

Birth, Chr, Died, or Buried.

There is nothing that suggests or represents red text when I click on
Data Text colour (think this is the right button to go to) only blue,
which I have for the above labels. I believe if I update it to
something else I shall still have the red text added after I apply a
source.

I cannot seem to find anywhere that is apparent to make ammends for
the red text. My colours are quite muted grey and blue which I like
but the red
is like an eyesore applied after I have added a source to any of the
fields mentioned above.

Any other clues what I am doing wrong.
Thanks heaps

2009-08-08 Thread Gary Templeman
However, it was released July 17 and in three weeks there have not been
reports on this list of major new problems so I would not call it premature
to update now. When there are a lot of users it usually doesn't take long
for big issues to raise their head so after a week or two you should feel
pretty confident. Besides, these updates typically contain both new features
AND important bug fixes, so the benefits almost always outweigh the risks.

Gwen,

To be clear, I am taking it that you mean bir. marr. etc. on the Individuals
Screen - the name of each screen is giveaton the top left.

I did say click the "Contents" button *not* the "Data Text Colour" as this only
applies to the main screens (as it says at the top of the box in which it is
situated).

Below that box it says "Text Colours" followed by a row of buttons the second
of which is named "Contents", that is the one which I meant.

Out of fairness to you I went to your link, followed the directions and

I can discern how this "Free" information can be integrated into Legacy.
As this list is for Legacy, Legacy add-ons and all things Legacy, I
can see where there is some, shall we say, annoyance about your posting
of that link. Unless you can show how this "Free" info can be safely
integrated into Legacy you owe everyone an apology.

I thought I was being reasonable. I stand by what I said about the link
being of no value and having nothing to do with Legacy. My entire

I know my posts are sometimes short and may sound curt but if you read
my post again you will see there was nothing harsh included or intended.
And I still invite the OP to explain how that link can be used with

RE: [LegacyUG] Adoption Question

2009-08-08 Thread ronald ferguson

Kirsten,

With respect, that is a lot different. I can understand a reluctance to
*Upgrade* to a new version where complete new sections of code, or
functionality, have been added eg. in V7 there was Mapping, Source Writer,
integrated Charting etc.

An *Update* is quite different and involves the correction of coding bugs
present in the current version, and maybe the improvement in the way in which a
function operates. Rarely does this introduce other problems.

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Location Database - Updates

2009-08-08 Thread 1familytree

Gene,

I was going to let all this pass, but I will refrain from typing what I am
thinking.

I guess my original post was not as explanatory as it should have been.

I use the data from the file I receive as a separate reference database when
locations cannot be found within the Geo-database incorporated into Legacy.

AGAIN, I use it as a separate reference database.

And if you are not comfortable with using database software, this is
probably not a viable option for you. But I often see listers referring to
manipulating their data in Access, so I would guess those people would find
this option as a benefit.

I am sure that there is a way to update the actual Geo-Code file in Legacy,
but I am not a coder or programmer and don't want to do anything that might
effect proper operation of my Legacy software.

You say that you were "rewarded with more than 33MB of useless text files",
if so, you did not follow the directions properly.

To use the link I provided for an update to the listing of the Geo-Database
here are the steps I followed;

Go to http://www.geodatasource.com/cities-free.html

Click on download full version, make sure you are on the FREE page titled,
"GeoDataSourceT World Cities Database Free Edition"
If you are already a registered user of their site, log in and you will be
directed to the download page.

If you are not a registered user, you must register. There is NO Charge.
After you register you will receive an email confirming your account is
active and then log in and go to the download page.
You can also go to the "my account" page and at the bottom of your page will
show you what files you are entitled to, in my case, only 1
"GeoDataSource-Cities-Free.Text.zip"

Download the FREE edition zipped file.

You can then import that file into any database management product. To quote
from their site;
"SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL or other database software
application capable of importing 2,248,843 records from a standard
tab-delimited ASCII text file and sufficient disk space to import the
database "

Once you have imported the records into a database, you can use the search
function to find cities.

I do not know how old the Legacy version 7 Geo-Code database is, but in
about half of the instances where I do not find a city in Legacy, I find
them in GeoDataSource. The other half are usually misspelled or names that
no longer exist.

I was merely pointing out as a reply to a comment that the "Legacy database
has never been updated" that this is what I use.

GeoSourceData updates their downloadable free list every month.

I have NO affiliation with that company nor any connection to the product.

I hope that this can be of great help to those Legacy users who need a more
current reference lookup that what Legacy provides.

(Ron, Thank you for comment "I strongly suspect that Jay
misunderstood the context of my response to the OP and was merely trying to
suggest somewhere were updated lists are available."

That was exactly the intention.)

Mike,

I was simply listing a url where you can acquire FREE an update for the
Geo -Code database.

In response to Ron's comment that the geo-code database has never been
updated.

I have been using (the updates) for several years, and I have NO
affiliation with the company or the product.

If you would rather I simply state the name of the company and let
listers search for it themselves, I would be glad to do that.

 Gene,
I think that you may be being a little harsh here. I strongly suspect
that Jay misunderstood the context of my response to the OP and was
merely trying to suggest somewhere were updated lists are available.

I thought I was being reasonable. I stand by what I said about the link
being of no value and having nothing to do with Legacy. My entire post

You are correct, you should have been more clear and accurate in your
statements. In your original post you indicated that you updated the
Legacy geodatabase. It still has nothing to do with Legacy. It is not
a Legacy add on or affiliate. Perhaps in the future you will clearly
state what you mean.

Gene,

I did not indicate in my original post that I could update the legacy
database...I listed where you could find an updated Geo Location
databasesee post below.

I will not comment any further on this subject as it is not appropriate for
the list. I suggest you do the same.

Thank you.

RE: [LegacyUG] Upgrading Legacy

Ron:

Yes, I understand that V7 was a huge change and that recent updates have
been relatively minor "tweaks" but after having gone through months of
misery after the initial V7 upgrade I now have a version of Legacy that
works beautifully for me and I'm just not inclined to mess around with it.
Others are welcome to jump on the newer bandwagons, but I'm standing
pat--probably for a good long while.

Kirsten,

With respect, that is a lot different. I can understand a reluctance to
*Upgrade* to a new version where complete new sections of code, or
functionality, have been added eg. in V7 there was Mapping, Source Writer,
integrated Charting etc.

An *Update* is quite different and involves the correction of coding bugs
present in the current version, and maybe the improvement in the way in
which a function operates. Rarely does this introduce other problems.
