RE: [LegacyUG] unknown surnames
Jennifer, I just leave the field blank. This doesn't cause any problems on screen or in reports, and in the normal Name List, all the people without surnames show at the top of the list. RE: [LegacyUG] how to obtain a multiple page pdf file showing a big family tree?
Hi Viola, I presume you are meaning a Descendant chart from Legacy Charting. Try this. Download the free program pdf995 (Google it) and set it up as a printer ie so you can print anything to .pdf files. When you have your chart go to the symbol in the top left hand corner and to Print. In Printer properties select PDF995 as your printer, press OK, select the name and place you want the file, and Save. This effectively prints a pdf file. This file will generate a multi page output which, when you print it, has a blank edge strip on each side of the page. Trim (say) the left side of each page back to the text and then match to the next sheet and glue in place to make one long chart. Hi! I m using the free version of Legacy (and, of course, I m new to it). My Descendant Charts comprises up to 6 pages in the lwc file. My aim is to be able to share it with others by e-mail, so I try to export it into a pdf file. The result is that my huge chart gets transformed into a one page pdf file - a microscopic thing when printed. On the way of this transformation I cannot see any box asking me for the number of pages. How can I have a pdf file showing a 4 generation Descendant Chart on a number of pages? Do I have a problem with Legacy (should have a Deluxe paid version?) or with the Acrobate Reader? Thank you in advance for your advice, badly needed! For most of users it is trees that matter. [LegacyUG] Birth certificate as a master source
I treat each birth, marriage and death certificate as a master source because information from each certificate relates to a number of different people. A birth certificate can give father's and mothers full names, ages (hence approximate birth date), occupations and birthplaces, parents marriage date and place, and birth informant. Other certificates similarly have data on several people apart from the certificate subject person(s). I am trying to cite a birth certificate issued in Scotland. The template for a birth certificate comes from Birth recordsBirth certificateAll countries except.Created at state/provincial levelbasic format (Most other options within this certificate string get you to a similar set of fields) There does not appear to be a field to record whose birth the certificate relates to. If I use this master source to, for instance, source the parent's marriage place or the father's occupation, there is no way in the printed out source list that comes from this template, to tell which certificate the information was taken from. I can title the document in the Source List Name to uniquely identify it, but that does not print out in the reports. The same issue relates to citing marriage and death certificates - there does not appear to be a field to record the name of the principal player. These templates are thus of no use at all, or am I missing something? Do I have to go back to the Basic source format and use the Title field to get a source that tells me whose birth is being recorded? How does anybody else cite a birth certificate? RE: [LegacyUG] Birth certificate as a master source
Thanks folks for pointing out that the name is in the detail. I hadn't gone that far down. I can now happily use this template, however I am not a lumper and will continue to keep each certificate as a master source. So far I have only 300 master sources for 5000 names in the larger of my two families and this will grow a I replace some of the Marginal evidence sources with better ones. It's not difficult to find any source one I need from the MS list. As a general principle, I have tried to identify the document in the master source fields, and note the relevant page or other identifying detail in the detail fields. The certificate templates have been set up in a different format so I will try to do things the proper way with certificates. I follow a convention recommended in Legacy's earlier video Ultimate Guide to Sources. I set up the Source List Name for all certificates (and some other documents) in the form Place - date - Surname, given names, document type. This way I can see in my master source list all the people, in date order, who have a relationship with the same place. Just because a Source relates to several different people, it doesn't follow that you have to create a new Master Source for every similar document. That's what Source Detail is for. Master Source is for generalities - things that are likely to be repeated over and over, such as the fact that it's a Birth Certificate, that it was issued in a certain Country by a certain Authority. Source Details is for, not surprisingly, the details - things that won't be the same for every similar document, such as that the Birth Certificate is for Joe Bloggs or Fanny Adams. No, for the reasons I have given above. RE: [LegacyUG] Can't Recover Functionality from Crash
I had the same sort of problem and this was my solution. Make sure your data is not under C:/Legacy/Data folder. If it is, copy the data and pictures etc to somewhere else, and don't put them back in the C:/Legacy/Data folder when you get the program running again. (General principal is to always keep data separate from the program files.) Copy the file C:/Legacy/Backup/Install.log and put it somewhere away from Legacy in case you need it again. Uninstall Legacy. If it says Could not open INSTALL.LOG.file, then copy from your safe copy of this file and put it in C:/Legacy folder. Try to Uninstall again. Have a look at C:/Legacy and you will see that even though you have uninstalled the program, it has left a series of folders and a few files. Copy the file C:/Legacy/Legacy.usr to somewhere out of the way (this has you customise settings). If you loose this it is no big deal to reset you Customise settings. Delete the whole C:/Legacy folder and all its sub-folders and files. Reinstall Legacy to C:/ from the original Legacy7setup.exe file Reinstate the Legacy.usr file in C:/Legacy (overwrite the default file), and you should be back in business. Depending on whether you have moved your data, you may have to reconnect this from OptionsCustomiseLocations Boyd -Original Message- From: k...@legacyfamilytree.com [mailto:k...@legacyfamilytree.com] On Behalf Of MJ Harper Sent: Monday, 31 August 2009 9:12 p.m. To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Can't Recover Functionality from Crash I think I've followed all of the suggestions from the website on what to do when after a crash the program doesn't work right. I've first save my Legacy Data to another location. Then I uninstalled Legacy 7 (Deluxe). It could not completely uninstall, however, and I got the message: Could not open INSTALL.LOG.file I did a fresh download of the program. When opened, it had my customer number and all that already in the fields I thought I'd have to fill out, on a fresh install from a deleted product. I did a couple of simple changes, e.g., fonts, female color, background color. Closed the program, did a restart. Opened the program again and those simple changes were still there. So I made my other option choices. Closed the program, exited Legacy. Restarted again. Opened Legacy. It set everything back to defaults yet again. Try this. Go to File New family file, and give it a name. In the new blank family go to View Master lists Sources Options Import Lists. Browse to the family file with all the sources and other lists you want and open it (this puts the file path into the top box). Check the boxes for the lists you want to import and Import Lists. Your new file will now have all the Master Sources, Locations, event definition and anything else you want to import. You can get to the same procedure through the Locations master list. RE: [LegacyUG] Search for unsourced data
Ron, Yes I have been using Legacy since version 3 and I tend to keep up to date with new editions although with version 7 I wait a month or so until some of the early bugs had been sorted. I downloaded and installed version 7.0.0.97 last Monday and I have been entering a whole lot of sources this week. The problem may be with the change of data format that has been built into this current version. RE: [LegacyUG] Search for unsourced data
Jenny, I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear. I had entered people and data about then, and had attached sources to only some of the entered fields. This meant that I had some fields with no source attached. With the current version of SearchMissing sources, the people whom I know have had unsourced fields are not identified by the search when they should have been. Was your experience this morning of finding an entry without a source carried out with data entered and searched for using version 7.0.0.97, or were you using the earlier build? Go to File Export to GEDCOM file. In Produce file for: box, scroll down to Basic. Click on the Customise box and it will show you what fields you will be exporting. Include or remove as you wish. Click OK, select the names to export and continue with making a Gedcom in the usual way. First, where it comes from? See Options Customise View Edit default marriage wording. If there is a marriage but the spouse is unknown you get the someone put in the spouse position in the reports. This someone should disappear when a spouse is added but it sometimes doesn't. In this case open the marriage that includes the someone person and go to the tab for Wording Options. RE: [LegacyUG] Bug or Problem with Search Alt Names
You can also use the Search and Replace tab which gives access to most of the fields including alternative name. Just be sure to put the same data in both the search and the replace fields, or use the skip button. It would be helpful if this Search and Replace function had find only and a find next tabs (as there are in MS Word's EditFind and Replace facility). This would facilitate searches in fields such as to-do items and location notes which are not individual person specific. It would also help if the where to look items were sorted in a more logical order so they were easier to find. Any thoughts on these items from the programmers? So if you searched with James in the Given Name field, for example, it will not find the records of John James and Joan James because James is their surname. [LegacyUG] Searching Location notes field
It is common practice to record the location of an event as it was at the time of that event. The Location Notes field can then be used to annotate this location with any changes in name, boundary amendments, the current name of the place, or historical notes. Many of the notes fields, and several other rather minor fields within Legacy can be searched from the Search Detailed search procedure. Location Notes do not appear in any of the drop-down selections. Is there any way to search this Location Notes field for a particular (current?) name, or for anything else in that field? Is there a quick way to find which Locations have notes against them? If not, is this something we should ask the programmers to have a look at? RE: [LegacyUG] Searching Location notes field
Hi folks, This string has gone totally off the course of my original question relating to Location Notes. It is clear that most respondents have never even noticed the Notes field that is associated with each Location! If you bring up the Master Location list and edit any location you will see a Notes field. This can be used for recording changes to the name of the place as political boundaries change or the place itself changes its name, historical notes about the place, population at any particular time, or anything of interest that relate to the place itself. This is nothing to do with events, except that you will generally have a Location associated with an event. The Location Notes relate to that location itself and therefore to any other part of Legacy in which you use that Location - births, deaths, marriages, events or any other piece of information that has a Location associated with it. There is currently no provision that I can find to search this field for a particular word or something that contains a particular word. It is not one of the fields listed in Search Detailed search Where to look, although that list includes all sorts of other fields (and some like address are covered in great detail even down to telephone numbers). Does anyone know a way to search these Notes? Is this something for a suggested improvement? My biggest complaint is that after all the reading and digging, I have yet to see an actual example of how a census or a vital record looks when properly entered into Legacy. Are you meaning how the Source Citation looks, or how the Event itself looks. I presume you mean the former. There are many versions of properly entered according to who you ask, so the right way for you will be however you choose to do it, really. Most importantly, bear in mind that the purpose of a Source Citation is to allow you or anyone else to see exactly how you arrived at a conclusion and - where possible - to replicate the steps. For example, you might use a Birth Certificate as a Source for an Individual's name and date of birth. Your Source Citation needs to identify that you used a Birth Certificate and state where that Birth Certificate can be found and/or where a copy of it can be obtained. If you use the Templates in Legacy 7 you will find that most of the common Sources are covered and they really do lead you step by step through the citation. Each field to be completed has a title which indicates what it should contain and if you hover your cursor over the field name you can read the full version of the grey text explanation that appears in each field before you start typing. (Sometimes its truncated in the field.) Try creating a little test file and work with that, trying out different templates and see how the output looks and decide whether you want to change things at all. You can always use the Override option if you aren't entirely happy with the result. Also, I'm a little hung up on the anatomy of some of my vital records certificates. For instance, there may be more than one set of numbers on a birth certificate. What do they represent and which does one list and how? I'm sure both sets are important. This depends very much on the issuing authority. I can only speak for English and Welsh Certificates which have 1 or 2 numbers: all have the number of the Certificate itself and GRO-issued Certificates have a number identifying the application for the Certificate. The latter is not important and the former not really important to the Citation as someone else can get a Certificate for the same registration which will have a different number on it. What *is* important (in England and Wales) is the Reference Number used to obtain the Certificate. If the Certificate is a GRO copy the reference is usually in the form of Quarter date, Registration District, Volume No and Page No. This is what someone needs to know if they are to obtain a Certificate the same as the one you are citing. If you are talking about Certificates from a specific state in USA or Australia or from elsewhere, then please say which and I'm sure someone with knowledge of that region will help you. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe:

RE: [LegacyUG] Pros and Cons of Notes vs. Events Usage
This thread has turned up some very interesting uses of the program's fields. I use the Events and Notes for two totally different purposes. The Events are for the Chronology screen, (or in a printout that doesn't have any Notes included), primarily as a research tool. This way the sentence wording and presentation isn't very critical. The events are are all sourced so I can go back to verify any conflicts. I then put much of the same information into the Notes, in time sequence, but in a better and more readable narrative format. The sources for Notes are rearranged to as far as possible into the same date sequence as the narrative of the Notes. Any narrative report is then printed with the Notes but without any of the Events, so that it reads as a better story. This process means that many sources are entered in duplicate (in both Event and Notes). This is a small cost to get sources printed out with both a research listing of the Events or a chronology, and with a Narrative report that has the Notes. My Research notes are in a mixture of formats, often as they were obtained from the source, and with miscellaneous questions and comments on reliability. Often they have the source's list name in the text, and I try to keep them in a semblance of date order. These are not used in any of the narrative reports. Some of these include illnesses, personal struggles with addictions, and family problems. I also use Research Notes to enter information about a person with the same surname who I think may be a possible relation. For example, after entering a family's information from a census record, I review that page and a few pages before and after that page for others with surnames that I am working on in that location. When I find one that I cannot immediately connect, I add their information to the Research Notes for further investigation at another time. I love the Events feature and the way it can be customized. For me, adding custom Events increases the value of the Chronology feature. I actually do not use notes at all. I found that notes do not print on several of the reports I like to use and when they printed they often showed up in stranges places in the report. With events, everything prints in order, with sources, with pictures, and I always use my own wording (at least in the reports I use). This also saved me from trying to decide if something should be considered an event, or should be included in notes. I like everything to show in my reports and it annoyed me that certain reports did not allow the inclusion of notes (why bother entering them if you can't see them in a report) so I moved totally away from them and kept it simple: events only. Experiement with the different reports and see what you like in the end results. I played around for a long time before deciding on a course of action and I've been happy with the results. Even though I did at first place some items in the general notes, I've since begun replacing all my note content with events. For general notes, I just created an event called Note. For most things, I like to use specific event names, such as the obituary event. Most events I've changed the sentence wording to be [notes][sources] as I prefer to write out what I want to say. A few, such as a census or an obituary, I begin with a canned sentence, depending on what fields I fill in. Bear in mind, I do not wish to take my material into a word processor. I want my reports to read as well as they can, straight from the program and I like to include photos in my reports. These are my personal considerations. Three things that come to mind are the fact you can easily shift the events in the timeline, you can attach a photo to each event and have it included in the reports and you can easily source each event. [LegacyUG] Exporting to a Legacy file
Part way through the process of exporting a family to a Legacy file (FileExport toLegacy file), the screen titles Combine event definition shows, with the name and sentence settings for an event. The headings on this screen, Event in current family file and Event being imported, are not relevant to the export process, but are relevant when importing a file. The options at the bottom of the screen also all relate to importing. When you close one event, the next one pops up so that you have to work through each event that may be set up differently from the default settings. At the end of this it is not clear just what you are exporting. What is the effect on the exported file of choosing any of the options offered? I would expect to export all the event settings from the current file. This is a screen that relates to IMPORTING a Legacy file to an existing file, where there may be conflicts between the settings and sentences in that existing file and the settings in the file being imported. In the export process it just gives rise uncertainty about what is in the exported file. There is nothing in the help files about this screen when exporting, but it is clearly outlined under the section Import, combine events. (5-531) Have I misunderstood something or do we have a bug? Version 6 was the same. RE: [LegacyUG] A strange problem
I sometimes have a similar type of problem with font size. Occasionally in the Picture gallery edit mode the text becomes too small to read and the font changes from Verdana to something like Times New Roman. If I close the screen and reopen, sometimes it comes right but not always. Similarly on the Notes field or in Text/comment boxes in a source, the font occasionally becomes about 1.5 times the normal size. In each case the box size is not changed, only the font. I cannot reliably repeat the problem or find any pattern of what leads up to a font size change. I had this same problem in Version 6. File name: [surname, given names], [approx or actual year date], [identifying note, or a, b, c where several pictures otherwise similarly labelled] Places - photos, maps, scanned pictures of places. File mane: [place], [date], [significance] Each of the five groups of files is subdivided into my two main family databases. I like the look of the JGEN system but I've yet to get that deeply into it. I'd rather not use RIN or MRIN numbers because they are not permanent, and I haven't used any User ID numbers, but that may be a better index link. However many of the images are used with more than one individual or marriage or source. I would like to see anyone else's system before my collection gets so big that I'm unwilling to change it all to something better than I have at present! Deciding on a filing system is no small or casual matter. I changed mine dozens of times trying to find something to suit all my uses of it. (But I'm settled now. ;-) ) I put all my source documents that link into Legacy into one folder using the MRIN filing system. http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/2007-06-01-mrin_filing_revisited.shtml That also includes smaller copies of gravestone pictures that I use for Source Detail. Generally, photos and Legacy are not a huge priority for me as I'm not big on conventional reports and all the foofooraw over arranging and rearranging data constantly to get this or that result. I put smaller copies of 'portraits' in the Legacy Picture folder filed by surname, name so they line up in the Picture Center in sync with the Name list there. I also have a collection of maps and places that I keep in my general filing system so I don't have extra copies in the Legacy Picture folder. I don't use them for anything in particular in Legacy except to brighten the place up. Just quirky - I like to see photos of churches and cemeteries as I'm going around. I used to have separate copies for Legacy but there was no point, it was just another set to keep track of. So I link them from my general filing where I also use the same ones for other projects. No numbering, just names. I don't use 'Back Up Multimedia' as I have other backup systems already to take care of all the folders I use. I think you can pick whatever path you want. - JL JLiki - creating your own genealogy wiki http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/jliki.html Michele Lewis wrote: I have never scanned photos or documents and attached them to my file but that is what I have decided to do (finally). It should only take me a couple of years :) My question is... what is the best way to do the file names so that everything stays organized. I am thinking something like... Doe, John - photo 01 Doe, John - photo 02 Doe, John - obituary (can use numbers if more than one) Doe, John - death certificate Doe, John - marriage license Doe, John - deed 01 Do you keep everything in a single file? (I am thinking that if I titled the files this way it would be easy to locate). What system do you use? If you use back up multimedia option do the photos/documents have to be in the default path? (and if so, can someone give the proper path because I scanned and saved a photo as a test and I just saved it to the desktop so my default path is now to there) Thanks, Michele Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support:
RE: [LegacyUG] Problem: Noted events in Descendant reports
I don't get the problem with either of these reports. Check the Wording 1 tab for the report. It should show Noted events in [HisHer] life were: and Noted events in their marriage were: Yours may be reading Noted events in [His] life were: Boyd -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bruce Jones Sent: Thursday, 21 August 2008 8:06 a.m. To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Problem: Noted events in Descendant reports I see the problem in the Descendant Narrative report but not in the Descendant Book report. Report it to Legacy (Report a Bug on the Home Page if you have the Deluxe version of Legacy) and I'm sure they will get it fixed in a future update. When generating either a descendant report or a descendant narrative there is a sentence that precedes the events for the person's life. It should say Noted events in his/her life were with his life for males and her life for females. It doesn't. It says Noted events for his life were regardless if the person is male or female. The actual events that follow are correct: e.g., He emigrated for males or she emigrated for females. When generating an ancestor report the pronouns agree: Noted events in his life for males and Noted events in her life for females. Can anyone shed any light on what I can do to fix this problem? I hope I made my problem clear. Thanks to anyone who can help. RE: [LegacyUG] Global Sorting of Children and Spouses
Thad and Ron, The suggestion to go to FileFile MaintenanceCheck/RepairProceed and check the box Sort all events by date will reorder the events but it does not reorder the children by birth date. I don't think it does this but cannot check as I have my events ordered in my own way and to try and look would mess them up.
