RE: [LegacyUG] Re: New Version of Legacy/FTM 2008

2007-07-07 Thread David S Brookes
Hi Alan,

I know this is a little off topic, but I thought my brief experience might
be useful to Legacy users who might vaguely be considering moving to the new
FTM.

Just out of interest, I downloaded the beta version of Family Tree Maker
2008. It took me ages ( my broadband isn't that bad). It didn't import
the GEDCOM file sufficiently well - lots of errors. I quite liked the map
feature (it incorporates Microsoft virtual world, I think it's called). The
programme wanted to keep closing. In the end I let it, uninstalled it and
binned it. Now, I know it's only the beta version I probably didn't give
it a good enough chance, but the import situation was a good enough reason
in itself why I will not be wasting my money on this. If other programmes
can import accurately why not FTM. (I'm not inviting a discussion!) So
thank you for the opportunity of confirming that Legacy is still the best of
the bunch, closely followed by Roots magic (for charts etc).

I look forward to the new Legacy release. It WILL be better than the new
FTM 2008 - it is already.

Best wishes

David

Alan,

What features are you looking for?

Maybe if you mentioned them in the list the programmers will hear about it.

Or someone will mention an obscure program that you have not heard about
that does that.

RE: [LegacyUG] Using a Relevant Subject

2007-02-01 Thread David S Brookes
Hi David

Thank you for that suggestion. You make a jolly good point here. Many of
us are guilty here, especially of piggy-backing, where the discussion
changes somewhat during the course of discussion. The only problem I can
see is if a person has been following a thread and suddenly the name changes
and they don't pick up on the change. Perhaps the person making the change
might use something like: Piggybacking (previously: Using a Relevant
Subject), the next contributor would then have the option of replying to
Piggybacking or Using a Relevant Subject and would drop the bracketed
section.

Just an extra suggestion, but perhaps this may be getting unnecessarily
complicated.

Best wishes and thanks for the post.

Just a few suggestions that might be helpful for many of us...

When asking a question by way of the LegacyUG, could everyone please
summarize the intent of your question in the Subject, rather than using a
vague Subject as a question (see the Original Message below)?

Using a more specific Subject might help those of us who want to go back
over time and search for answers to questions that might arise - using the
Subject as a point of reference.

Also, please avoid piggy-backing on someone else's question/Subject by
assuring that your Subject is relevant to your question, and is not simply a
Subject heading that has been used by someone else for a different purpose.

Thank you,

RE: [LegacyUG] Searching locations

2007-02-01 Thread David S Brookes
I do think the matter is often difficult to fit to rules.

I live in Polesworth which is in Warwickshire, England but my postal address
is Polesworth, Tamworth, Staffordshire. Now if I were recording this, would
I use my postal address or the address which shows my administrative county?

I live in England, but how do I record my country? Do I record it as
England or UK, or indeed England, UK. Do we record Postcodes (zip codes)?

I understand that the correct 'protocol' in the USA is: Village/Town/City,
County, State, Country and to leave commas as place holders. What is it in
the UK?

I've never really got to the bottom of this. I've always taken the line
that my database is for me, so I do what is convenient for me.

Rules are there to be broken. I just find it much more convenient to know
the exact address where possible.

If I had not used the full address in that field I would probably have never
noticed that two completely different lines from my family (one Welsh and
one Yorkshire) lived in exactly the same house about twenty years apart.

I did request last year that there should be an option to use the short
version of the address when exporting to a GEDCOM etc.

 making it an Event.

I use the Census both ways, but I actually include all the details

Hi Cheryl,

Welcome to the group and to using Legacy. I'm sure you will find folk on
this user group very helpful. I think most people would probably save
everything in one file, but it would be really safe if you kept backup
copies. When you exit Legacy it should offer you the option of backup - I
always take up the offer. You can save photo's, documents to open within
the programme too. I always find it easier to put all these in one file,
but they can actually be kept anywhere, in different places on your
computer. You also have the option of backing up multimedia - I take up

Do you have one file have everyone - husband wife (starting couple)with
families all in one file

or... do you break the files save by surname. Example my Husband parents
surnames are Clifton, VanDyke(dads side), Unruh Hopkins (mom's side)So
would you save a file for each one build the family from there.

Doing it the second way, you wouldn't have a complete picture of all of the

RE: [LegacyUG] saving family files

2007-01-13 Thread David S Brookes
Hi Cheryl,

I forgot to say - If your Legacy file gets so large it is unmanageable, it
is possible to split the file up. I personally would only consider this at
a much later stage. If you want to read about it, go to the drop down Help
menu at the top, when you are in the Legacy programme. Click on Contents
and there is a section on Using Legacy. If you click on the Tips and Trick
link, there are a number of helpful articles. Towards the bottom there is
an article on Splitting Files. This will not only tell you how to do it,
but will tell you you don't need to do it right at the start - it discuses
the issue a little.

Hope this will help.

RE: [LegacyUG] Picture Center Updates to Individual Records--and Source Detail

2007-01-07 Thread David S Brookes
Hi everyone,

Interesting discussion here but mainly agree with Gary. (Many apologies,
Ron.) As the 'suggest a feature' is available to everyone it may or may not
be statistically significant (we don't know this), but if the option is
there I would use it if I feel inclined to do so, in the same way as others
have the option of using it if they find they would like a feature added? I
don't thing it I would call it spamming - I always understood spamming as
'sending unsolicited commercial messages to many recipients', but I stand to
be corrected by those with more knowledge about the subject than I. We are
individuals sending individual e-mails after being given the option of doing
this by Legacy. I guess Ron is probably right about the statistically
significant bit, but it wouldn't stop me having my say.

Although I see a need for a change in the programme, I usually get around
it, by organizing sources in a different way. I'm sure someone will see
problems with this, but I tend to use lots of sources and use the source
details for minor adjustments or comments. For example, I do not have just
one source for the 1881 England Census, but one source for each 'place of
residence'. I attach the source to each individual person who lived in this
place, adding comments or 'appropriate extracts of the master source' to the
Detail Source. Therefore, if I add a picture of the place of residence and
a copy of the original census form, it is easier as once you have attached
the picture to the Master source, adding the source to the individual being
much easier than lots of separate pictures. This is the only way I know of
adding pictures to sources, and to attach them to individuals rather than
individually. This is why I use many master sources. This doesn't help
those who have a large data file already set up in a different way.

If you add an individual photo which is 'just a photo' and not really part
of a source as such, but needs to be shared amongst a number of people, I
tend to do it via the picture centre, by finding the picture on the computer
by using 'browse', then adding all the details to the 'Picture List' on the
right hand 'third of the page'. It is then an easy process to add the same
picture and comments to each individual, by placing them in the individual,
Birth, Christening, Death, Buried, sections. If you have events you can add
the to events in the same way. If you do this the written details you have
added to the 'Picture List', is then attached with the picture. I suspect
most know all this, but just thought I'd write it on the off chance, there
is someone who doesn't.

Sorry, this e-mail is a little rushed and apologies once more to Ron, who I
feel has more knowledge about the Legacy programme than I'll ever have.

Have a good week everybody - I have a busy one so may not get chance to
defend myself until later!

Best wishes

My guess is that this group's membership comprises only a very small
proportion of the number of users of Legacy and in my view it would be
extremely presumptious to make the assumption that even if a significant
number of group members submitted such a request it would be statistically
significant.

It is quite likely that for some nations translation into their own language
would have a much higher priority and I can think of other illustrations of
priorities - not forgetting my continual gripe about the bugs in the
pedigree web page program.

I agree completely that spamming is not the way ahead - it merely wastes
time that can be better spent. The debate has taken place, the suggestion
has been made and no doubt the powers that be are aware of it.

No problem with you not agreeing with me, we all have our opinions.

I only put my fourpennyworth in because of what seemed to be an attempt at
organising a mass lobby. (maybe that's a better expression than spamming,
although that may be in the eyes of the recepient).

Certainly everyone has the right to submit suggestions nor would I try to
influence that. I simply had reservations about the organising bit.

 Records--and Source Detail

 Hi everyone,

Interesting discussion here but mainly agree with Gary. (Many
 apologies,
Ron.) As the 'suggest a feature' is available to everyone it may or may
not
be statistically significant (we don't know this), but if the option is
there I would use it if I feel inclined to do so, in the same way as
others
have the option of using it if they find they would like a feature added?
I
don't thing it I would call it spamming - I always understood spamming as
'sending unsolicited commercial messages to many recipients', but I stand
to
be corrected by those with more knowledge about the subject than I. We
are
individuals sending individual e-mails after being given the option of
doing
this by Legacy. I guess Ron is probably right about the statistically
significant bit, but it wouldn't stop me having my say.

Although I see a need for a change in the programme, I usually get
around it, by organizing sources in a different way. I'm sure someone
will see problems with this, but I tend to use lots of sources and use
the source details for minor adjustments or comments. For example, I
do not have just one source for the 1881 England Census, but one
source for each 'place of residence'. I attach the source to each
individual person who lived in this place, adding comments or
'appropriate extracts of the master source' to the Detail Source.
Therefore, if I add a picture of the place of residence and a copy of
the original census form, it is easier as once you have attached the
picture to the Master source, adding the source to the individual
being much easier than lots of separate pictures. This is the only
way I know of adding pictures to sources, and to attach them to
individuals rather than individually. This is why I use many master
sources. This doesn't help those who have a large data file already
set up in a different way.

If you add an individual photo which is 'just a photo' and not really
part of a source as such, but needs to be shared amongst a number of
people, I tend to do it via the picture centre, by finding the picture
on the computer by using 'browse', then adding all the details to the
'Picture List' on the right hand 'third of the page'. It is then an
easy process to add the same picture and comments to each individual,
by placing them in the individual, Birth, Christening, Death, Buried,
sections. If you have events you can add the to events in the same
way. If you do this the written details you have added to the
'Picture List', is then attached with the picture. I suspect most
know all this, but just thought I'd write it on the off chance, there
 is someone who doesn't.

Sorry, this e-mail is a little rushed and apologies once more to Ron,
who I feel has more knowledge about the Legacy programme than I'll
 ever have.

Have a good week everybody - I have a busy one so may not get chance
 to defend myself until later!

 Best wishes

Hi Gary, Jan, Cathy

I have also noticed this and agree entirely with the mails. I did sometime
ago make a suggestion to make this change to the software so that there is a
global option. If please send an e-mail to 'suggest a new feature', this
would then back-up my original suggestion, and perhaps within the fullness
of time, we might get this (as far as I'm concerned) much needed change. It
would make my use of the software much easier.

I agree - I have often added info to a photo AFTER I have attached it to
someone, and it is a pain having to find everyone with the same photo
attached so I can individually add the same information.

I would prefer seeing a global change option made available when using the
Picture List tab so these changes would get made to all records. Much like
what happens in other areas of the program.

It is not unusual to learn of additional or corrected information for photo
captions, dates, and descriptions after the initial linking. These generally
apply to every record the photo is attached to. Not having the global
option means having to visit every individual record. A tedious process when
you have photos with large groups and an extensive photo inventory.

[LegacyUG] Using

2007-01-05 Thread David S Brookes
Hi,

If I add a picture to the picture gallery of any individual or couple and in
the caption use '' for 'and', when you look in picture gallery itself (i.e.
once you have added the picture and can see all the pictures in miniature),
the caption comes up as an underscore instead of . E.g. 'Iris Ken Smith'
comes up as 'Iris _Ken Smith'. I have not noticed this before. Did it
happen in a previous version or is it a bug in version .118? I know what
the answer is (don't use ''), but I just wondered if anyone else had the
same problem for those that use '', and I wanted just to alert people.
Perhaps it's just my file but it looks like a bug to me? Perhaps this is
one for Sherry?

Best wishes

Regarding learning to use Legacy (or any computer program) now getting some
focused attention in Legacy News, etc. I offer the following.

Many people (including folks like me over the age of 70) are hesitant to
test their computer program functions for fear that they will damage
something. I am using a 4 generation copy of my Legacy primary family line
data. I call this file copy MyLearningFile. Because MyLearningFile is
clearly a copy that can be easily replaced if needed, I feel entirely
comfortable to experiment with any Legacy function without fear of damaging
the program or my important data.

I just received my order of the Legacy training disks that I am anxious to
use soon, so I expect to get even more ideas of how to try the many
functions in Legacy in MyLearningFile before applying my new skills with my
real files.

I am encouraged to mention this here because several folks I have encouraged
to do this have told me that it really helped them get going with Legacy. Of
course, this idea is aimed mostly at people who are just beginning to use
Legacy better.

I do appreciate watching the ideas and discussions from others about using
Legacy more efficiently, so to them I say thanks. Hopefully I can be as
helpful to others when I see something I might contribute (always easy to
delete it, if not)

RE: [LegacyUG] Name of Church - should be Restoring Zipped Files

Hi Russ,

I thought that if you need to reload windows you loose everything on the
same drive. In practice I only keep the zipped backups in my documents. My
working files (Data and Multimedia) I keep on flash drive. For a matter of
interest, I keep most other documents on Zip discs, flash or CD/DVD
depending on what they are and how often I need to access or alter them.

Hi Marielle,

I haven't actually lost any data, but have practiced it just in case it
happens.

Firstly download the Legacy programme from the website and install it. Then
you need to copy the zipped data file (I call mine 'My Family') and
multimedia zipped file to where you want to keep it on your computer. Many
keep them in the Data file of the Legacy Programme folder, I keep mine in a
folder called Family History in My Documents. When you have put the zipped
files where you want them, unzip them by right clicking on each zipped file
in turn and go to 'Extract all' in the menu and left click. The files
should then unzip. They will produce folders with the same name as the
zipped files but with out the zip picture going through the middle of the
file. All your information should be in the 'unzipped' folders and ready to
use.

Next run the Legacy programme. A box will probably open asking you to load
a data file. If you have put your zipped and unzipped folders in the Data
file of the Legacy Programme folder you should see your unzipped folder,
open it and you should see your family data file. Click on it and it should
load. If you have put it elsewhere on your computer you will need to find
the file by navigating to it in the oblong at the top of the box.

When you run the Legacy programme, if the box asking you to load a data file
does not appear, go to the file menu at the top and click on open family
file to make the box appear.

Your data file should the open, but without any of the multimedia files/
pictures. You need to get Legacy to find the paths for these. Go to
OptionsCustomize. Click on the Locations tab and then 'Test all multimedia
paths', Proceed. If the multimedia files cannot be found the use the 'find
them yourself' option. You will then need to navigate to them yourself. If,
however you have put all your multimedia in one file, if you find one, it
will find all the others for you.

I hope this makes some sense. See you get on. Don't worry - remember you
have your backup data on the CD if anything should go wrong.

Best of luck

With respect if Windows has to be re-installed anything on the same drive
(eg C:) will be lost. The only safe way to avoid this is to partition the
hard drive and keep all data in a separate partion (ie. a different drive)
to programs.

RE: [LegacyUG] Transfer files between computers.

2006-12-29 Thread David S Brookes
Sherry,

This is basically what I was suggesting to Diane, except I suggested copying
the whole of the Legacy folder. Perhaps you could clear up a muddle in my
own mind. When we get an update from Legacy does this update provide a new
.exe file or does the update alter just the components within the already
installed programme? I had assumed the latter but if a minor update does
provide an updated .exe file then I can see why you have suggested saving
just a copy of Legacy6Setup.exe. If the update alters the components within
the already installed programme and not the .exe file then we are probably
safer copying the whole folder as I suggested.

If updates supply a new .exe file each time I would be very happy just to
save the Legacy6Setup.exe to flash. I have in my mind the problem people
had a few weeks back when they started to download the update, couldn't do
it and in the end ended up with their original software not working and no
backup.

Diane,

1. Save a copy of the Legacy6Setup.exe file to the flash drive, if you wish
to install Legacy on another computer. Make sure that you selected the
Download Full Setup option when you downloaded the Legacy setup file.

2. No need to do a gedcom unless you're sharing with a non-Legacy user. You
just want to do a backup of the Family File. Go to
http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Tips.asp, where you'll find an article under
Backing Up and Restoring Family Files.

3. I enter the data into the file on the flash drive and back up to the
hard drive. The flash drive is not a good backup medium because they're
small, easily lost or stolen and fragile.

4. I have a 256 MB drive which holds my Family Files with no problem. If
you have a lot of pictures you're going to put on the flash drive, you'll
want one large enough to hold those also. Of course, since the 2 GB drives
are so much cheaper now (you can buy one for what I paid for my 256 drive!),
might as well get the best bang for your buck.

The Legacy6Setup.exe file is only 27 MB in size.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Well Thank you for all of the answers that I have received about flash
drives. Now for the final questions hopefully.
1 I understand that I should download Legacy to this flash drive.
2 Do a gedcom of my info onto this drive.
3 When I enter info on one computer do a backup to the flash drive then do

a restore onto the other computer.
4 get at least a 2g drive, and maybe put on family file on each drive.

Do this seem to sum it up? You have all been very helpful.

RE: [LegacyUG] Transfer files between computers.

2006-12-29 Thread David S Brookes
Hi Ron/Sherry,

The way I have always understood things is that the Legacy6Setup.exe is the
file that installed and built the programme on the computer. Therefore if
you save this file, this will enable you to install/build the programme
again is for some reason the programme folder was completely deleted from
your computer. Am I right?

If so, that brings me to updates. If we update for e.g from .117 to .118
and we do so from 'within Legacy', in other words with the programme open (I
know it shuts down the programme once the process has started etc) does the
update provide a new Legacy6Setup.exe file (which is in any case in the
Legacy programme folder) or does it update the individual components of the
folder/registry without touching the LegacySetup? If you look at the
LegacySetup properties it always shows as File Version 6.0.0.0. I would
have expected it to read 6.0.0.118.?

If you then save the Legacy6Setup to flash after having 'downloaded' .118
and find you need to reinstall the programme or install on a different
computer, will it install 6.0.0.0 or 6.0.0.118 or do you need to copy the
whole Legacy folder to get .118?

Hope this makes some sense!!

Best wishes

David

David,

I know your email was addressed to Sherry but it is rather more of a general
question rather than being specific to Legacy, so please forgive me for
jumping in.

The point is that if you copy the .exe of any program to another computer
that is all you have done. What has not been done is to copy the information
regarding where all the component files are stored to the Register. So when
the .exe file is run it does not know where the files are. This is why when
a program is downloaded it also has to be installed as well.

The set-up.exe file of any program tells the Register where on the Hard
Drive it has put all the above information so that when you run the .exe
file it can check the Register, find the file it wants and then carry out
the instructions.

This is obviously a simplification but I hope illustrates why the set-up.exe
is important.

 Sherry,

This is basically what I was suggesting to Diane, except I suggested
copying the whole of the Legacy folder. Perhaps you could clear up a
muddle in my own mind. When we get an update from Legacy does this
update provide a new .exe file or does the update alter just the
components within the already installed programme? I had assumed the
latter but if a minor update does provide an updated .exe file then I
can see why you have suggested saving just a copy of Legacy6Setup.exe.
If the update alters the components within the already installed
programme and not the .exe file then we are probably safer copying the
whole folder as I suggested.

If updates supply a new .exe file each time I would be very happy just
to save the Legacy6Setup.exe to flash. I have in my mind the problem
people had a few weeks back when they started to download the update,
couldn't do it and in the end ended up with their original software
 not working and no backup.

 Diane,

 1. Save a copy of the Legacy6Setup.exe file to the flash drive, if
you wish to install Legacy on another computer. Make sure that you
selected the Download Full Setup option when you downloaded the
 Legacy setup file.

 2. No need to do a gedcom unless you're sharing with a non-Legacy
user. You just want to do a backup of the Family File. Go to
http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Tips.asp, where you'll find an article
under Backing Up and Restoring Family Files.

 3. I enter the data into the file on the flash drive and back up to the
hard drive. The flash drive is not a good backup medium because
they're small, easily lost or stolen and fragile.

 4. I have a 256 MB drive which holds my Family Files with no problem.
If you have a lot of pictures you're going to put

Ron, (and Sherry)

Thanks for your reply:

Not entirely. It can be used to install on a different computer or another
drive. I was aware of this - just didn't write it in.

Interesting reply from Sherry. I think in future I will keep only a copy of
the latest Download Full Setup file in case we have a problem anything
like what we had a few weeks ago. I tend not to use reports very much etc
and in any case if you build your genealogy quickly or make lots of
alterations, they become out of date and are fairly easy to produce anyway.
As regard to colours etc - well it reminds me of the day I went to buy a new
mobile 'phone. After deciding upon the model, the salesman proudly
announced they had an offer with 5 different coloured changeable covers - my
reply, 'Now be honest. Do I look like the sort of person who is going to
want to be changing colour according to the occasion'? He quickly looked me
up and down, placed the covers back under the counter and quietly completed
the sale!

Keep up the good work!

Happy New Year to you both, and to all our readers.

 Hi Ron/Sherry,

The way I have always understood things is that the Legacy6Setup.exe
is the file that installed and built the programme on the computer.
Therefore if you save this file, this will enable you to install/build
the programme again is for some reason the programme folder was
completely deleted from your computer. Am I right?

Not entirely. It can be used to install on a different computer or another
drive.

If so, that brings me to updates. If we update for e.g from .117 to
.118 and we do so from 'within Legacy', in other words with the
programme open (I know it shuts down the programme once the process
has started etc) does the update provide a new Legacy6Setup.exe file
(which is in any case in the Legacy programme folder) or does it
update the individual components of the folder/registry without
touching the LegacySetup? If you look at the LegacySetup properties
it always shows as File Version 6.0.0.0. I would have expected it to
 read 6.0.0.118.?

As I understand it, it does not amend the set-up.exe in one's folder but
only alters the files and register entries. However, the version on the
Legacy website is always the latest.

If you then save the Legacy6Setup to flash after having 'downloaded'
.118 and find you need to reinstall the programme or install on a
different computer, will it install 6.0.0.0 or 6.0.0.118 or do you
need to copy the whole Legacy folder to get .118?

You only need to transfer the set-up.exe (and of course the Data files), but
in doing so all the user settings will be lost. To retain these I *think*
one would have to transfer the Legacy folder and then run the set-up.exe.
Sherry would need to clarify this point.

 Hope this makes some sense!!

 Best wishes

 David

 David,

I know your email was addressed to Sherry but it is rather more of a
general question rather than being specific to Legacy, so please
 forgive me for jumping in.

The point is that if you copy the .exe of any program to another
computer that is all you have done. What has not been done is to copy
the information regarding where all the component files are stored to
the Register. So when the .exe file is run it does not know where the
files are. This is why when a program is downloaded it also has to be
 installed as well.

The set-up.exe file of any program tells the Register where on the
Hard Drive it has put all the above information so that when you run
the .exe file it can check the Register, find the file it wants and
 then carry out the instructions.

This is obviously a simplification but I hope illustrates why the
 set-up.exe is important.

RE: [LegacyUG] Name of Church - should be Restoring Zipped Files

2006-12-29 Thread David S Brookes

If, however you have put all your multimedia in one file, if you find one,
it will find all the others for you.

I hope this makes some sense. See you get on. Don't worry - remember you
have your backup data on the CD if anything should go wrong.

Best of luck

RE: [LegacyUG] Transfer files between computers.

2006-12-28 Thread David S Brookes
Hi Diane,

I agree with 1 4 but not 2 or 3. I have not followed all the replies so
there may be good reason, but can't see the reason for the GEDCOM. I
personally disagree with 3. I keep my working Legacy data file on my flash
drive, together with all my multimedia, which I use directly from the flash
drive. I back up both data and multimedia as zip files (Legacy asks if you
want this to happen when you close the programme) on one or all of the
computers I use. That way I don't have to do any restore every time I swap
computers. The only time I use the zipped back up files is if the data on
the flash drive gets corrupt or I loose the flash drive. In this case I go
to the computer I used last and unzip. Fortunately I have never has to do
this.

Best of luck,

Well Thank you for all of the answers that I have received about flash

1 I understand that I should download Legacy to this flash drive.
2 Do a gedcom of my info onto this drive.
3 When I enter info on one computer do a backup to the flash drive then do

a restore onto the other computer.
4 get at least a 2g drive, and maybe put on family file on each drive.

Do this seem to sum it up? You have all been very helpful.

2006-12-26 Thread David S Brookes
Hi Diane

Firstly when you buy a flash drive you will need one large enough to take
all the information you wish to put on it. I use a 2Gb at the moment, but
my files are fairly small therefore I have room to expand. I know there are
folk on the LUG who have huge Legacy files. I would go for as big a drive
as you can afford, but I would avoid the very small ones.

I use my flash drive to keep on it my legacy family file which I call 'My
Family'. I also keep my multimedia files on the same flash drive and a copy
of the legacy programme file as a backup. This is the way I organize it:

I copy the entire contents of the Legacy File from my programmes file to the
flash drive. This creates an identical 'Legacy' file which, in case of
emergencies I can copy back on to my hard drive in the Programmes folder.
There have been several discussions in the Legacy User Group as to the
usefulness backing up the legacy programme file.

I then create another folder which I call 'Family Tree'. Inside this folder
I copy my Family tree Legacy Data file which I call 'My Family' - yours may
be called something else according to what you decided to call it. I keep
all my multimedia files that I use with Legacy in two folder which I call
'My Family Photos' and 'My Family Sources'. I copy both these folders and
their contents into the 'Family Tree' Folder. I then create a shortcut of
the 'My Family' file to the desktop on my computer.

You then need to run the Legacy programme making sure it is pointing to the
file on your flash drive. (When you have started Legacy, go to FileOpen
Family File. Where it has 'Look in', click on the little arrow, go to your
flash drive, click on family tree folder and you should find the 'My Family'
file. If you click on it you will have opened the file on your flash drive.

Next, you need to make sure all your photo's, sources etc are found -
remember you have moved these to a new location on your flash drive also.
Do this by going to OptionsCustomize and then the Locations tab. Click on
'Test All Multimedia Paths' and make sure everything is pointing to the
multimedia files you have on your flash drive.

When you have gone through this process once, the files on your flash drive
should work first time, every time. Earlier, we created a shortcut to your
desktop. In future all you need to do is click on this and it will open
your files on the flash drive first time, in the Legacy programme.

When you come out of the Legacy programme, you should be prompted to save
the zipped version of the file. Save the Legacy File and the Multimedia
file to somewhere on your PC - not on the flash drive (in case it fails, or
you lose it!) You will then be able to recover everything.

Only when you are sure everything works, delete the old (in my case) 'My
Family File', 'My Family Photos' and 'My Family Sources' from the PC -
careful not to delete from the flash drive. All your data is now on the
flash drive, and working, with no other duplicate files on your computers -
other than the zipped backups.

Hope this makes some kind of sense - please don't delete from your hard
drive until you are sure everything is working from your flash drive.

This process you only need to do once - from then on it's all plain sailing.

Best wishes

Thank you everyone for the answers. It seems as though most of you are using

flash drives. So I guess I will invest in one. Any particulars on this?
Also when I back up the files from one computer to another, I would just
backup using the backup feature to the flash drive, and how do I put the
backup on the other computer? I can't find a way to do that, what file does

it go in, just Legacy. As you can see I am not that knowlegeable in
this...
Thank you, you have all been very helpful.

Diane,

I use a flash drive. I keep my data on the flash drive and back up to
the desktop laptop computers.

This way, I can take my data with me and use any computer that has
Legacy installed on it.

2006-12-25 Thread David S Brookes
Hi.

Have tried various ways. To me the best way is to run the database on a
flash/ pen drive (and put all media files on the flash drive too). This way
you are using the same database. I then do the zip backup to my desktop
computer.

Hi Diane,

As you've already seen, there is more than one way to achieve the
desired result. No one method is it, each has its own merits and
problems and you will need to consider how they fit with you and make
your own decisions.

My method is to have the working copy on my desktop computer, and a
reference copy on the laptop. I *only* alter the data on the
desktop/working copy (bar one exception, see below), and when I'm about
to head out somewhere I transfer a fresh up-to-date copy to the desktop
via the network we have running in the house. A flash drive would also
do nicely if the network wasn't there.

When I'm out and about doing research, I record my findings in a
separate document (OpenOffice, as it happens), which I then copy to my
desktop when I get home and enter the data into Legacy on the desktop,
too. The only time I alter the Legacy data on the laptop/reference copy
is when I'm working through the ToDo list, in which case I close items
that I've done as I work so I can see what is left to attend to. Of
course, the items on the desktop/working copy will need to be altered
later on as well, so this is a duplication, but I can live with that; on
the reference copy all I do is mark an item Closed, on the working
copy I'll also enter details about what the research found.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,

RE: [LegacyUG] How do you personally put in information that you think is incorrect....

2006-12-19 Thread David S Brookes
Hi Heather,

If you go to the 'Sample' file that comes with Legacy and click on the
Events for Asa Clark Brown, one of the events is 'Disproven Birth'. My
suggestion is to use something similar. Put the information in an event
called 'Disproved', 'Disproved' or something similar and add the information
in the notes section, you could then link your disproven source to the Event
in the usual way. I think I would work along these lines.

My father and I have been working on one of our Ancestors for 40 years now
(he is our brick wall.)

I recently discovered that one of the sources we had used for some
information probably does not pertain to this ancestor after all. My father
had found our ancestor living in a Mental Assylum in the Canadian 1881
Census, under the name of McCasline (our name is McCaslin...). From that
information and further research, we had an exact death date and place (from
the assylum), a calculated birthdate (a few years off our other calculated
birthdate), and some other information. The rest of the family had not been
found on the census.

I have since discovered that ancestor AND most of the Family living in the
same county as they did in 1871 - but under McCastin (the t didn't match
the l in Soundex, but of course looks very similar!) The information
matches the information from the other census's.

So either the McCasline was the wrong person - or he was sometimes at the
assylum, and sometimes at home - and got counted twice. (so obviously I
need to do more research)

So now the question.
I do have what I've found commented in the notes.
I don't want to just remove the information from the files but I don't
want to get confused either, thinking I have the definate information when
it is now put under a great amount of doubt. And even if I do disprove
the information, I don't want to just remove it either, as others might make
the same mistake?

So - how do you put disproved or doubtful information (that others might
find and think is right) into Legacy in such a way that it is totally clear
it is disproved or doubtful?

I do realize there isn't 1 right way - but I'd like to hear what people
would suggest!

Thanks!

RE: [LegacyUG] Genealogy Etiquette

2006-12-15 Thread David S Brookes
Sadly the thing that a list like this cannot put over to the reader is the
tone of voice. People often write as they speak. You can say the same
sentence in different ways and it means something different. Also the
expression on a persons face can help sell the meanings of the words. Let's
try and be as understanding as possible, particularly at this season of
goodwill. Merry Christmas to everyone.

The problem is that people do tend to get rude when forgetting that many
times, genealogists are older people and not always computer literate.
Rather than being so rude, why not just kindly remind someone how to send in
plain text. As for you, Dora, you can be as rude as anyone. Legacy Users
are made up of all peoples from all over the world with different cultures
and perceptions. I try to remember that when I see rude comments. Overall,
the list is great and I learn something about Legacy almost daily. Paul

RE: [LegacyUG] Another question re gedcom

2006-12-14 Thread David S Brookes
Hi Tish,

Firstly send the gedcom file as an attachment to the e-mail. When you
receive it on the other computer, right click on the attachment icon and go
to 'save as'. It opens another window and you can save it wherever you
choose to on your computer. When you have come out of your e-mail
programme, if you then open the Legacy programme, go to the drop down menu
in the top left corner called file, you will see a list of options. Go to
'Open Family File' and find your file (wherever you put the e-mail
attachment, 'save as' file) - you do this by clicking on the little downward
pointing 'arrow' on the small oblong box at the top. When you find it
eventually the file should appear as one of those listed in the big box.
Click on it. The name of the file should appear in the 'file name' box at
the bottom. If you then click on 'open' your file should open in Legacy.

Secondly, I've not used Gedcom a great deal, but I think all information
should be in the Gedcom file, but not photos and other media files. I think
I'm right here, but I'm sure there are those with more experience who can
offer better advice.

I will say, if it were me, I wouldn't bother with the e-mail, but put all
the data (including photos etc) on a pen drive and just move the pen drive
between the two computers. Your up-to-date data is then always on the pen
drive. (Obviously make the zipped backups somewhere else other than the pen
drive).

Hope this helps.

Best wishes

This is somewhat off topic, but someone I met when I put a Legacy Tree on
Ancestry has
been bugging the living fool out of me. I am a genealogist for a historical
society
and as part of our outreach I set up Legacy family files on local families
and put it
online for researchers. This one man has contacted me about information I
have gotten
from a 90 year old resident. He has already contacted the person, but when
the man
stopped short of telling everything he wanted to know about an ancestor,
this man has
been bugging both me and the informant with numerous letters and phone calls
to give
him more intimate details than both my informant and I feel he needs to
know. He sent
my society a $200 check (with the note-to pay the bar tab-so you know this
guy's
elevator is stuck in the basement)which we are holding, just in case we need
to send it
back.
I have tried being diplomatic, have written him several times trying to get
him off our
backs, but he is like an old mule...I think I need a #10 iron skillet to get
his
attention! If my last letter (including a sentence that says 'your
informant thinks
the information is none of your business') doesn't work, what do you do?
Has anyone in
the group had the same problem?

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Download of v6.0.0.118 - server problems

2006-12-09 Thread David S Brookes
Sorry to hear that so many are having problems in downloading .118. I
downloaded it first time as soon as I got the posting on LUG, but it was
very slow. I left it while I ate my meal and came back to it later and it
was done. I thought (before tea) that it had hung but it turned out OK in
the end.

I do hope the server problems are sorted out soon, and I feel for the folk

of the best software packages around for our need (apart from the charting

Keith,

Did you download 118 OK? 117 Downloaded OK, 118 is the problem. I couldn't
download from within Legacy or from the website. I'm in a pickle. I'm
teaching Legacy for 3 hour tomorrow morning at our Computer Club. I have
117 on my computer and 110 on the laptop that I will use for the
demonstration. I would like to download the laptop to 117 but it doesn't
seem to be available. My husband and I have an ulcer between us trying to
get everything together for tomorrow.

I hope this problem is fixed soon! I may be up all night as it is. Our
Christmas Musical is at church tonight and we're singing.

By the way, I love the new coloring for the pedigree chart and the numbering
is fixed on the Publishing center...which is what I was waiting on.

I think there is a good chance this is just due to the volume of people
hitting the server at the same time. I'm in UK and downloaded early the

RE: [LegacyUG] Upgrade suggestions

2006-12-09 Thread David S Brookes
I do something similar, Mary.

When I upgrade, I do so, naturally to my Programmes Folder/Legacy. I then
make a copy of the whole Legacy Folder to a USB pen drive, where I also have
my data all media folders. When I use Legacy, I use the Legacy on my
desktop computer, I run the programme which is installed on this computer,
directly with the Data file on the pen drive. After I have been using the
programme, I back up the 'My Family file' and 'Multimedia' as zipped files
on my desktop computer. So essentially I have my data on pen drive with a
zipped backup on my PC and the programme on the PC with a copy on the pen
drive. This means I can take my pen drive to any computer and run Legacy
from the pen drive using my up to date data - essentially my Legacy is
portable and with the appropriate back ups.

I have added a shortcut from the data file on the pen drive to my desk top
so when I use Legacy on my desktop computer, I just pop in the pen drive,
click on the desktop icon and I'm away.

I do not make a habit of running the Legacy programme from the pen drive
copy, but it works perfectly fine on my wife's laptop, although a little
slowly as her laptop is a little old now. I assume, as it works on this, it
would work on any other computer. I don't back up on the laptop though -
one back up is sufficient and to many different backup's = confusion for me!

Best wishes

I would like to make this suggestion to everyone before you try to upgrade.
Make a backup of the entire directory where Legacy is installed (c:\Legacy
on my computer). I zip the entire the directory and name the zip file with
the build information such as 6.0.0.110 build.zip.

Now I have a full backup of the build prior to trying the upgrade. If there
is a problem with the download process or there are server problems as we
have just encountered and the program on my computer gets corrupted, then I
can restore to the previous version.

This is also good if the .usr files need to be recreated. I can just reload
them from the zip files as needed. I'm going to make my .118 zip file now.

Mary

RE: [LegacyUG] Upgrade suggestions

2006-12-09 Thread David S Brookes
What I forgot to say - although it is pretty obvious, is that, if my PC
Legacy fails, because of incomplete downloads, I can always copy it back
from my pen drive - and - I know it works! This of course works fine until
the data etc exceeds what is possible to keep on my pen drive - by that
time, I'm rather hoping they will have invented a bigger one!

Mary

I really couldn't believe the 8MB, bit so I checked my e-mail list. 8MB is
about 8112KB. The largest e-mail that I have has this month is 161KB and
that was with a pdf file attached (not from LUG). I have deleted the
original start of this thread, but surely the writer meant 8KB?

I also suspect the writer is referring to leaving previous e-mails in the
body of the text instead of deleting them, not file attachments.

2006-12-03 Thread David S Brookes
June,

The way I understand it is that anyone can add a 'flag' to an e-mail and it
doesn't necessarily mean an attachment. I could be wrong here because I
never use them. In IE you can add a red exclamation mark which shows an
e-mail of high importance or a blue downward pointing arrow to show an
e-mail of low importance. It may be different for each e-mailer programme.

I too never receive any attachments. What confuses me tho, is that emails
come in showing an attachment 'flag' but there never is any attachment, and
as I say, definitely not the one being discussed. Why is it that some folk
do some do and some don't?

RE: [LegacyUG] 8MB attachments

2006-12-03 Thread David S Brookes
I may be misunderstanding you here, Glenda. I have understood attachments
as being separate files not in the body of the e-mail, and, yes I have to
click on them to open them, just like you. I have never had an attachment
from anyone in the Legacy user group and that is why I did not understand
anyone writing about '8MB attachments'.

If, however you reply to a mail by clicking on 'Reply', the whole of the
e-mail you are replying to is printed at the bottom in the body of the
e-mail. This I have never regarded as an attachment, but I think it may
have been what the original 'post' of the thread was writing about.

Hope I haven't confused the issue, here.

David,

As a fellow Ntlworld user, but who uses Eudora as
his email client, I can assure you that I
received an attachment of size 6.19 megabytes, a
zipped file of a backed up Leggitt Legacy database.

I get Eudora to download it into a subordinate
folder attach and because of being on broad
band, it is downloaded silently in the background.

Look for a file called Leggitt.zip, dated
03/12/2006, in the folder, attachments to emails addressed to you are
stored!

You may get a surprise.

This could not have happened with a well-organised Rootsweb List! grin

It is a pity that the LUG allows attachments of
this size to be sent out on its List.

I feel especially sorry for those LUG members on
dial-up - 6.2 megs is a lot of dial-up time at 65K or lower baud rates!

Just my 2ps worth (Good old British money - none of your Euro stuff!)

In my opinion no functionality should be compromised by the worry of the
download size. In these days of broadband connections these downloads take
little time. Now I know some will say they are on dialup and it takes an age
to download but I believe that is a choice those people have made. It's
like saying Windows should never have never been improved beyond Windows 95
because my PC doesn't have enough memory or hard drive space.

The charting functionality as shown in Genbox and other packages is really a
basic requirement to many of us. It is the one feature that constantly
makes me question if Legacy is the right tool for me. I love Legacy for all
it's features, but put plainly, it is right at the back of the que when we
talking about charting, compared to all other packages. Charting companion
Tree Draw simply do not cut it, and are an added expense which no other
package would make you pay for.

Legacy has an add-on in Tree Draw. I, as one person, do not want a charting

I agree with all who made inputs about Legacy needing charting capabilities

as, Reunion, and Family Tree Maker (that I use for charts) , and GenBox.
Charting Companion and Tree Draw are not the answer. Very inferior when

it

Hi Jeff,

Although I haven't spent much time with family tree charting, but when I
looked at Genbox, I felt it was far more intuitive than anything else I had
seen, and the only thing I could find to chart 'everything' on one page
without fussing about too much. Had a little look at TreeDraw and didn't
find it that intuitive. Intuitive is important for me - I just now need to
learn to spell it without the spell check!!

Genbox does have a lot of interesting features, and in its comparison chart
it showed a lot of features it had that Legacy did not.

Would someone more familiar with Genbox, compare it with Legacy, especially
in what features Genbox is inferior to Legacy. (The Legacy comparison
webpage does not mention Genbox).

I would suggest that another major problem is the inability to link
the arrows to the boxes so that if you move a box the family links

 family tree charting
program (Genbox) does it very well. Manipulating a tree of 1000 boxes
to fit it into an A0 size page was impossible with Tree Draw Legacy but a
 doddle with Genbox.

Subject: [LegacyUG] How to Unsubscribe

I just received word that any use of the word unsubscribe in the subject
line of a message will get you bumped off the LUG mailing lists. There
is apparently no setting our mail list coordinator found that can force
the MailEnable software we use to look for specific wording. It scans
the entire subject line and if it finds the magic word unsubscribe it
will remove you from the mail list.

I know this does not explain why some users got bumped when they replied
to a message with the subject Help Please ... Important

Notice I have used the magic word in my subject line. I will be looking
for a you have been unsubscribed message from the list.

RE: [LegacyUG] Re: [LEGACY] Got bumped off LegacyUserGroup

2006-11-06 Thread David S Brookes
I think after all of these e-mails, I think I now understand what all this
is about. Someone please tell me if this is right.

1. Occasionally people send messages to the User Group asking how they can
'avoid getting' all the e-mail from the user group.

2. The answer is to send an e-mail back to the user group with the word
'unsubscribe' in the subject box.

3. If people offer this advice (given in 2.) to people who want to know how
to unsubscribe (those in 1.), but in replying use the word 'unsubscribe' in
the subject box, in some shape or form, they will find themselves
unsubscribed too.

The way I understand it is that Lloyd, in offering good advice to those who
wish to unsubscribe has found himself unsubscribed because of using the word
'unsubscribe' somewhere in the subject box.

Do I have it, or not?

Best wishes

David

Lloyd and others,

Our old mailing list software would only accept unsubscribe requests via
our web page. Our new software will accept messages to the list with
unsubscribe in the subject line also. For those who replied to a message
with unsubscribe in the subject that might explain why you unexpectedly
got a confirmation email that you were now unsubscribed from the list.

I just successfully subscribed to the list from my private email account
by sending a message to LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com and got
this message:

MailEnable: You have been added to the list
(LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com).

To unsubscribe to this list, please send a message back to the
list with 'unsubscribe' as the subject.

As you can see a message with unsubscribe as the subject will now
unsubscribe you.

I will contact the web master and the mailing list coordinator to amend
the web page and the unsubscribe instructions included in each user
group message.

I do sometimes feel I am entering the same things twice.

Jan, Thanks for that - I'm delighted that all is now well.

 Here is the position.

After much experimenting - including my purchasing Wordperfect and
installing Open Office, I think we (myself and all the other
contributors to this topic) have concluded that it is the formatting
of the RTF by Legacy that is incorrect. The placing of the pictures is
erratic, and one has these odd brackets and so on in the captions and
 descriptions.

So I have written two macros. The first goes through the whole
document removing all square brackets and odd spaces etc. and also the
word 'caption. As it is named - run that one forst.

The second finds each picture, and centres it and the captions and
descriptions, and also ties the pictures and captions etc together so
that they cannot be split over a page break.

I worked on my genealogy last in 2001. I believe it was Legacy vs. 4
(maybe). Anyway, I downloaded the free Vs 6, which took 4 hours with my
dial up. Then miracle of miracles, my 3 1/2 inch floppy that I had my
gedcom saved on from 2001 had not become corrupted! It loaded beautifully.

Since I do not remember what was and was not available in the free Vs. I
used back then I don't know if I am now noticing updates or just what I
overlooked then.

Anyway, I use the Ahnentafel / d'Aboville Systems. In the program I come up
as number 627 in the index (how did that happen?). This is confusing since
I should be number 1 with all others going up or down from me. I found that
my numbers are entered as User Number. How can I get it to sort and use my
numbering systems?
