Re: [LegacyUG] Repository Question

2007-08-24 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
An interesting new wrinkle on repositories. I recently
extracted from GoogleBooks pages from the 1883
"Transactions of the Medical Association of the State
of Alabama" which was filmed from that source in the
Library of the City of New York. I got all the credits
reported but it certainly doesn't look pretty.

Re: [LegacyUG] What size pictures are too big, when I need to think about space

2007-06-10 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
I think pictures can be too big and I read about this
somewhere and have experienced it. If a very large
picture is forced down to, say a thumbnail as would
be along side a name, it becomes wavy and indistinct
since Legacy has now way, of which I am aware, to
scale them down.
Agree, experimenting is good but what I do is shrink
the pictures before calling them into Legacy, say to
400 pixels on the longest dimension.

in the Event section. Now I want to move them to the
Source section where all my more recent ones are. Does

2007-03-02 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
I think the response was vulgar. The user obviously
doesn"t understand the terms and perhaps even the
language. I am glad someone has taken him under wing
for help.
I was very disappointed with the statement from a
member of Legacy's team. This is out of character. I
guess anyone can have a bad day.

This is purely my own lazy and time stressed opinion.
I would leave them "as is" unless you have a
particular need for an individual photo. Some would
suggest that leaving them untouched is more
conservative.

Re: [LegacyUG] Copying Source Detail

2007-02-21 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
I know this has been covered in other answers but this
is what I do:
If I want to pickup a source and detail entered
anytime in the past, I go to that item, highlight it,
and push the Clipboard symbol (those things that look
like two papers on top of each other in the lower left
screen.) This will erase whatever has been on the
Clipboard and will ask you if you want to include the
Details, which you would answer "yes". Then you go to
where you want this Source/Detail group, highlight the
line and push the small line under the triangle. The
Source and detail will be deposited there.
I hope I made myself clear. Learning this trick has
saved a lot of time doing the various manipulations
mentioned in some of the answers.

Thanks Ron, but now that it is established that the

Re: [LegacyUG] Changing event and verification

2007-02-16 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
as far as what to do with newer information, I think
it would be unwise to delete forever some information
you have. I think you need to decide which is likely
to most valid. I don't think you said what data is in
question, but I would put all the information in
different ALT,Imm events and properly note in the
notation area what the problem is.
I can appreciate verification discrepancies. I have a
lot of them and at present prefer to ignore. I'll need
to deal with them sooner or later. Hopefully I can be
more precise going forward.

At the risk of pushing further off topic and off
Legacy focus, I'm concerned that the scenario of one
of us passing and a grandchild, perhaps 10 to 15 years
in the future coming upon our work and trying to use
it.. Looking back 10 to 15 years is suspect any
electronic media or software to read the media will
not be readily available and only accessible at great
expense. Paper and print have stood the test of time.

Re: [LegacyUG] acid-free ink

2007-02-07 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
Jeff,
There must be more to "Archival" vs "Acid Free" Paper.
For one, they claim it lack "lignums"
Don't know the answer re inkjet ink but I suspect it
is acid free just considering the havoc acid ink would
play on nozzle etc.(even recognizing the acidity is
very mild.)
A note about laser printers...they only deposit a
substance(call it ink) on the surface of the paper
which does not penetrate the paper and may slough off
in time..how much time is always an interesting
question.
Also, some of the newer inkjet inks claim to have a
long life but not forever which is what we all want.

Another reason for keeping the thumbnail pictures in

Dave,
Thanks, that I did not do. I saw the button but was
not familiar with it's use. I guess I could have tried
the "Help" button.

[LegacyUG] Unlinked individuals and lines

2007-01-14 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
I thought that if one entered an unlinked individual
with or without a related line that a new "tree" was
established and could be visualized by entering
view>tree. I did not experience this on a recent group
of entries. Am I not doing something I shoul be doing?
I do have other "trees" on the list and don't recall
additional steps.

I think you miss the point. I already have hundreds of
entries and documents, I would now need to go back and
put an appropiate id on the database. What is the best
way to make this connection other than going through
by trial and error? There must be a computer way to
identify the person(s) a document is connected to.

[LegacyUG] Linking a document based filing system to individuals in Legacy

2007-01-03 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
I finally agree that my system of filing documents
under people names will not stand the test of time. If
I want to migrate to a document based system, ala
Clooz, how do I go back to the individual file in
Legacy and indicate what the code number is for the
appropriate document?
My file is now two portable file boxes but the way I
am accumulating documents, I will soon be overwhelmed
to change.
By the way, I don't trust computer technology to work
for long term document storage. If I pass (and I
surely will) and no one picks this up for ten years
or (god forbid) a generation, I can guarantee that
the data forms I use will be unreadable. I like paper.

Regarding brands of USB drives, these have been known
to fail. I try to go with recognized brands. Also, be
sure they follow the USB 2.0 protocol even if your

I was so excited to see the option [[wife of john
doe]] mentioned that I went and changed all my unknown
given or surnames to variations of this. The it dawned
on me...I can't ever make a report and opt to show the
"private" information since I have used this double
bracket for really private things such as social
security numbers, rumored crimes and misdemeanors,
etc.
Any thought other than to go back and eliminate the
double brackets on names?

Re: [LegacyUG] 8MB attachments

I have been following this and other lists for awhile. I'm convinced that most
users have no idea how to trim their replies. I suggest you highlight the parts
you donot want to repeat, like anything beyond the immediate message you are
responding to. Do this by holding the mouse over the first line then scroll
down to the end of the unwanted material. The hit the "delete"key on your
keyboard. I like to enter the word so someone years from now know I
have truncated the message.
I would welcome anyone with more computer savy and the ability to write a
clear direction to correct or change my suggestion.

Re: [LegacyUG] primary scource and pedigree charts

2006-11-06 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
Naomi, I have no suggestions on the second part of your question. However, regarding self as a primary source, I use this when I know from having been present or have on good information that an event occurred, for example, I just attended a nephew's wedding. I don't feel I need to ask the couple for a marriage certificate to enter it. I use something to the effect of "Contemporaneous history of" the dots being whomever since I will use such a source for a lot of recent things where the history giver is alive and reliable. I know this will stimulate disagreement on the forum but that is what I do. I do keep documentation that is available such as wedding announcements to back up my history. Cathy, Am I to take from your response to Teri that you donot imbed photos in the text of a report but print them and insert them separately and "manually?" If so, do you not allow printing of pictures  and then have the report generator leave pages for these? Do you download to a word processing program or use the Legacy generator? If the same event and photo are attached to 7 people, it will appear for all 7 people.Event photos are in the body of the report.Source photos are amongst the Sources at the end.A big issue is how readable they are when included in a report. Laura, I could not function without Ancestry.com. It is true, if you are near a public library that subscribes and they have enough computers you could do without buying it yourself. However, if you like going from Legacy's Resource module directly to Ancestry, it obviously needs to be available on your home computer. You might want to try the trial subscription then sign up for the monthly program(overall much more expensive.) Unless you do alot of British Isles, be sure you sign up for only the US version. file and have added columns named WWI, WWII, SSDI, census years, obit, etc  This way, using filters, I can easily see what I may not have checked or need to check again.  For example, I can go to the library and pull up everyone who died in Illinois who I do not have an obit on if I have an exact date, or if it is an estimated date, I can go to Ancestry and focus on anyone who I have not found a WWI draft registration card.  However, having an estimated date of birth, and death, is critical.       So what I have done is started estimating, one by one.  I have 1,000 completed but still have 4,000 to go.  What I was hoping to do was to create estimated dates in Legacy, export my file, then delete the estimated dates in Legacy.  I must be in a rut because as

2006-10-12 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
I feel I need to weigh in here. I suspect 40% of the entries on this list are, in one way or another, related to recording sources. As a relatively new genealogist, I picked up Legacy on recommendations. I did not know the importance of formatting sources and how there were standards to meet should one want to publish, etc. The software itself was mostly silent as to the "correct" way to cite sources. You needed to buy a CD to get a tutorial on sourcing, and, with apologies to Goeff, this was inadequate to the task. I love Legacy. I would not give it up for almost anything. However, having to analyze each entry on the Individual Report to hopefully get it close to "standard" is at least annoying. I feel this can be programmed in a way that the information is easy, and intuitive, to enter and meets the standards for further publication of the work. I had planned to correct this in editing but the error is still in the program. Nick CirilloSandra Williamson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I have generated a book using the publishing centre which includes two individual reports and two special text entries The entire book goes for 13 pages. When I add in the table of contents it says that all the 4 different reports start on page 1 and the sources start on page 2 (I allocated to put the sources at the end of the book). The page numbers were also not consecutive across the entire book even though I had selected "Number all pages consecutively” in the format section of each report..Also
when I initially built the book I had the reports in a different order which I subsequently changed so that the book read more easily. The change has been reflected in the order of each chapter/section but not in table of contents which is still telling the reader that the chapters/sections are in original order and all start on page 1 (which of course they no longer are). How can this be corrected? I've looked in the Help file but there didn't seem to have anything addressing this issue other than for individual reports rather than the entire book, perhaps I'm missing something - anyone got any ideas?I put up a query on the Melbourne Legacy users Group, they weren’t able to suggest anything and suggested that I contact either support or this Legacy User Group Message Board.Has anyone else had this problem? Should I report it to support as a bug? Any other ideas?SandraAspendale, Melbourne,

Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Folder

2006-09-19 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
Along these lines, I have, from the beginning had a folder callled Genealogy Images. If a picture from my personal collection is needed for Legacy, I make a copy in there with subtle change in name. My question is: Now this folder is quite large and I would like to break it down to the 4 family trees I am working on, If I move an image from the master folder to a subfolder (still in the Geanology Images folder) will Legacy find it for inclusion in the program or must I re-identify it in Legacy? Nick C. Fairfax VACathy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi Diane,You can have as many copies of a photo as you like on your hard drive, so long as they're in different folders.I have my original scans in sub-folders in a folder called Family Originals - mostly as tifs. I have a down-sized jpg copy for Legacy
in sub-folders in a folder called Legacy Pictures (no bigger than screen size which is still too large for most Legacy uses but great for slideshows). I like to keep the same name - or at least the same beginning to the name - so that I can easily find the original. I start my filenames with a code made up of a few letters to tell me who owns the original or which album they're in and a number. eg eva056 tells me that this photo is the 56th photo I scanned when scanning photos belonging to my Aunt Eva; cjphar023 means that I have the original in my Harris Album. If I've cropped the photo I add a letter to the code. So attached to Legacy I may have eva056b, eva056d, eva056f - if I've taken head and shoulders out of a group photo and they're the best I have for that person.Of course I have backups of all these on my external hard drive and also on CDs.Captions are a problem as they're often photo editor
or program dependent. I add some indication of the contents of the photo in the filename. You can add jpg comments that are embedded in the file and visible to some programs or IPTC captions etc - more extensive and again embedded in the file and visible to some programs (but unfortunately not Legacy) or use systems peculiar to your photo editor - or Legacy - but then if you change program, you've lost all your captions. How many sub-folders you use depends on you. If I have a lot of photos, I have one for each family. If I don't have many, I have a folder for a branch. Photos are the only things I file by family. That's how I do it,CathyAt 05:16 AM 20/09/2006, you wrote:>I am making a Legacy Picture Folder for my hard drive and plan to >keep it in My Pictures.>>SNIPPED>Legacy User Group guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.aspTo find

RE: [LegacyUG] Scanning (Off-topic?)

2006-08-09 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
There is a down side to using the higher resolution on photographs and scans, that is, the image will distort if you reduce it to the thumbnail size such as  would accompany a persons entry on Legacy. In those instances, I have had to make a separate image at a much lower resolution, such as 150dpi to avoid this. Nick Cirillo[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Briefly, for general interest, then I'll email more detail directly toArnold. In general, use tif format for anything where size doesn't matter andquality does. I think this and similar threads overlook the main purpose of "Sourcing" that is to allow someone else to get to the same item. It might be valuable to other on the list to read your experience finding and instituting on off site backup protocol. Usually yourcomputer will have software (Nero, Roxio, etc.).  If you open that you willbe presented with two screens, one of which is your hard drive's
filingsystem and the other for files to burn. If you click on the file in thewindow for your computer and click on an arrow, it will "move" the file tothe box to be burned to CD.After you've selected all the files you want toburn, you then click on whatever is available that says to start creating orburning the CD.However, another thing I wanted to tell you is that quite often whencomputers "crash" the whole hard drive isn't lost.  I've never lost a filefrom a hard drive even though I've been using a computer for about tenyears. Even if something is wrong with the Windows portion of the hard driveso that it won't boot up, etc., you can piggy back the hard drive ontoanother computer and access it and the files just like a jump drive or anexternal hard drive. I know you wouldn't feel comfortable doing this, but itmight be worth your time finding someone to do this for you rather thanreconstructing your Legacy

By now I think we can agree that for many the change
in server by LegacyUserGroup has caused alot of
problems. I am sure Support is aware of these and will
attempt to repair them if possible. It seems time to
set these comments aside. I opened to a page of
similar complaint this morning that I have been seeing
for over a week. I'd like to see the site get back to
user problems and questions re. the program.

Janis,
That seems to do the trick. Do I understand you put
the detail transcription of the census line or family
group in the Notes?
I find that checking the preview of the Individual
report helps formatting but this is all very time
comsuming.

viewed family trees only to find one unlinked

Thanks all for help so far. The individuals are in
unlinked. I linked the line to where I think/hope it
will fit. I believe if I unlink from common parents it
will be done.
The questionable people are well noted as such.

[LegacyUG] Uncertain of relationship

2006-06-26 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
I have a few people and 1 line that may be related to
a family group that I am searching. How is the best
way to handle this in Legacy. To date I have been
keeping the information in hard copy and not entering
onto database for fear I will forget the uncertainty
of the relationship (or others will not know of it)
and they may appear as part of the otherwise certain
family tree.

Re: [LegacyUG] Census - Citation

2006-06-23 Thread Nicholas Cirillo
All,
I absolutely need to chime in here. I have studied
Mills' *Evidence* and *Quicksheet*. They very much
follow the tenents of *Chicago Manual of Style* and as
a result are very stilted. I have tried to massage my
source references in Legacy to come close to this
standard but have, to date, failed. I am resigned to
doing the best I can and try to find some uniform
method of entry that works for me. If I publish, I
will need to edit to get things in the proper order
and punctuation. I do try to get all the elements in
the Source to preclude needing to look them up in the
future(presuming I had the foresight to record them
someplace initially.)
