[LegacyUG] picture source/citation

2007-04-21 Thread Patricia Hickin
When I add a picture to my family file, I'm not seeing a place to incude the
source. Am I blind?
As it is, I'm just adding the source in the description box, but that's not
very satisfactory for several reasons.

Of course, I could add an "event" and put the source there, but that's a
nuisance.

Surely there a designated spot that I'm overlooking -- I hope!

[LegacyUG] digitized articles and books

2007-04-11 Thread Patricia Hickin
(This is off-topic so you can email me directly if you prefer, but please do so
at [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of my usual email address as I get an incredible
amount ofspam at my regular email address and weed out anybody not in my
addressbook.)

But what I'm wondering if there's anyway to find out whether a
genealogical/historical, etc., book or article is digitized and online? I know
some good websites that have a lot of that kind of thing, but I don't know a
way of searching to find out whether a particular book/article is available
ANYwhere on the Internet?

I don't know whether I'm explaining what I want very clearly or not!

But thanks for any help!

Pat

Re: [LegacyUG] How to add individual's info from previous file-copying an "event"

2007-03-14 Thread Patricia Hickin
I have decided just to copy the information from an earlier version of the
file. I had a long research note and had no trouble copying that.

Then I tried copying an "event" and therefore clicked the edit button for the
event, used the clipboard icon to copy it, but when I went to the other file I
was told the clipboard was empty.

Why is that? Or rather, is there a way to copy an event from one FILE to
another (just as I can copy it from one individual to another)?

Thanks,
Pat

A really weird thing just happened:

My file was showing Ann P with 3 husbands:
Dennis Springer, 1712-1754, father of 11 children
Dennis Springer, 1712-1754, father of 1 child
  Jacob Larue (no children)

So I thought I'd merge the two Dennises.

BUT in the name index, Dennis was listed only 1 time.

SO in the marriage box, I deleted the Dennis who was the father of only 1
  child.

BUT got rid of BOTH Dennises so now the father of the 11 children is
  UNKNOWN!

The file shows Ann now with just two husbands: unknown and Jacob.

So ALL the info in re Dennis is in a backup file and also in a previous .fdb
  file.

And there is a good deal of info -- the notes would be easy to copy but then
there are ca 8 sources and ca 5 events.

So what I want to know is whether there's a way to bring that info about
Dennis into this new file easily -- does this make sense?

Thanks so much for any help! Pat

  Patricia,
I believe what you had was an incident where you had Ann married to Dennis
twice. The first marriage had 11 children and the 2nd had 1 child. To fix
this you need to restore your file back to the way it was and then you need
  to do the following:
First verify that the single child of the 2nd marriage, was not a
duplicate of one of the children from the first marriage. If the child is a
duplicate then first do an unlink from parents, which will remove the child
from the family. Next go to the person that the child is a duplicate of and
do a manual merge of the two, if he is not a duplicate and he is part of the
family then just link him to the first marriage. Now all you have to do is
go to the second marriage and then unlink the marriage and that should fix
  the problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] Bibliography problems

2007-02-22 Thread Patricia Hickin
I am suddenly having bibliography problems. A few days ago I was editing
some of the bibliographic entries in my maternal database. Today when I
opened Legacy, I noticed that only a few of the entries appear in the Master
Source List.

I pulled up other files, on which I had NOT done any recent work on the
bibliography (I have two main databases, maternal and paternal, and there
was the same problem with earlier maternal files, which I have not worked on
for months and a similar problem with my paternal database, in which I had
NOT edited any bibliographic entries.)

I have Deluxe version 6.0.0.118 December 6, 2006, build.

What is causing the problem?

What should I do about it?

I'll appreciate any help!

And on the family pae, when I clicked on help and typed it "export" I didn't
see either the To-Do List OR the Sources List listed.

Also didn't see the options on either of the report menus.

Can you tell me where to find the instructions for exporting either/both to
a text or .rtf file?

What SHOULD I be looking under/for in the index?

Thanks!

Pat

Jeff,

"Just about any report" can be exported to text or html. The text reports
can be opened in a word processor but wouldn't have the formatting that
shows otherwise.

Book reports can all be exported to rtf.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Thank you.

I would make a suggestion that the capability to export "just about any
report" into a word processor would be a good thing for Legacy to have.
That way any report can be spruced up as needed.

Jeff

Re: [LegacyUG] Corrupted GEDCOMs - UTF-8 format

2006-10-29 Thread Patricia Hickin
I've got Notepad and Wordpad -- rarely use either -- except Notepad via
Legacy, and then I usually copy whatever into a WordPerfect file if I want
to save it.

Is there any reason I cannot/shouldn't uninstall Wordpad -- to be sure I
avoid the problems you're talking about here?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Corrupted GEDCOMs - UTF-8 format

I was working this week with a user who reported that when he generated a
GEDCOM using the UTF-8 character set option instead of ANSI the output file
was corrupted. It contained random characters which rendered the file
unusable by other applications for import. These characters sometimes were
at the beginning of the line, sometimes embedded within the line where a
space would be or, in a few cases, even replaced characters in the TAG (the
part of a GEDCOM line that tells the importing software what the line
means).

I initially could not duplicate the problem, nor, when he sent me snippets
of the affected parts of his GEDCOM, see any errors. I eventually looked
at his snippets in a variety of text editors and Word Processor programs
and was able to see there were "bad" characters visible in Wordpad but not
Notepad nor most of the Word Processors.

After I reported my difficulty in even viewing the "bad" characters in the
snippets he sent me I received the following reply:

"The comments you made in your email regarding viewing the output by
various means led to me doing some further investigation. You will
probably be pleased to know that I no longer think it is a Legacy problem!

By a little bit of trial and error I believe I have isolated the problem
to Wordpad; the editor I was using. It appears that Wordpad is misreading
the UFT-8 GEDCOM file and substituting random characters on the initial
loading of the file. If you then have Wordpad save this file it saves the
characters that it has misread. I have tried loading and saving the GEDCOM
in various text editors and I am unable to reproduce the problem.

I then did a little bit of further research on the internet and I found
various references by people who have encountered a similar problem with
Wordpad (and MSWord) - and some of the info is fairly old. I am amazed
that there has not been more people experiencing this same problem and I
am even more amazed that Microsoft have not been made aware of this
problem and for them not to have fixed it. From my reading Wordpad,
unknown to the user, converts the text to UFT-16. As I have limited
knowledge of this subject I will avoid using Wordpad in future.

This is something that everyone, everywhere should be made aware of and
you folk should keep this in mind when anyone else advises you of some
text editing problem.

Thanks for your help and I am pleased for you that it apparently is not a
Legacy problem."

I was granted permission to relay this information to the Legacy Users
Group as a caution to anyone who want to view their GEDCOM's produced by
Legacy, or any other program, to be wary of this issue if you open the
GEDCOM in Wordpad.

Re: [LegacyUG] Copying events (e.g., between spouses)

2006-10-29 Thread Patricia Hickin
Personally, I just put all joint things under the husband's name and would
enter it under the wife's name only if there was a difference. E.g., if he
moved to San Francisco in 1935 and she stayed East with the children till
1938.
Or, if he was an architect and she was too I'd enter that in both, since I'd
assume an occupation was HIS occupation and that her occupation was HERS.
If you can't tell certain events are individual or family I'd make it clear
in the Events Description.
This method is probably not pleasing to a lot of people, but personally I
don't have a problem with it.

Kyle,

I cannot think of a way to do what you suggest. The method I would use
would be to go to the event click edit and copy it to the source clipboard
using the icon then go to his spouse and and paste again using the icon.
This way all the details and sources are copied. However, this will need
to be done for each event. I tend to copy things like this to all persons
at the time of entering.

Just I though I use the marriage events for a couple's residence and not
the individual events - a matter of choice though.

Dear User Group:

New here, and despite a search of the archives, failed to turn up an
answer. So, I'll plunge in and risk asking something previously
asked!

So, I have a person in my family file. I have meticulously filled in
a bunch of addresses in city directories as "Residence" events for
that person. Now, I wish to apply them all to that person's spouse.
Is there an EASY way to do this?

I realize I can copy the events individually, but it would be really
handy to be able to, for example, copy all of the Residence events to
another person. Or to select a few different events, and copy them
all at once. This would be handy for a spouse, but also for children
before they grow up and move out, or other family members living
together, etc.

Any suggestions? My apologies if this has been asked recently.

Kyle

Hi Pat,
I'm not sure what you mean by a "text file" - perhaps you mean Preview?
When you save a report to "text" you just get plain text. (Notepad will
show it in whatever font you choose - all of it. If you change font in
Notepad it opens the next txt file in that font.)

I'm not sure where you've been setting the fonts.

Default fonts for Reports are set in Options > Customise - Fonts tab.
These can be overridden in the Report Settings.

In the Publishing Centre, Fonts are changed on the Options Tab. They
affect all reports in the Current Book. A new book appears to revert to
the default fonts.

Font settings in the individual reports seem to stick to what you've
chosen there (Report Options button in the Report - Fonts Tab). When you
are in the Publishing Centre and choose to look at the settings for the
individual reports, this tab is hidden as the Fonts are controlled by the
Publishing Centre.

Re: RE: [LegacyUG] Paid Genealogy Search Sites-Apol 2nd attempt

2006-10-20 Thread Patricia Hickin
My computer hss a mind of its own these days -- anyway I think I need to
apologize for my earlier rather ill-tempered message. I've been to dinner
since and my brain seems to be SOMEWHAT more functional. So I've found a
way to send an email to Ancestry--somehow I'd forgotten all about the
ubiquitous "Contact Us" link. I've fired off an email to them and perhaps
I'll get a workable response.

Like so many commercial (ane especially genealogical??) enterprises the
actualities, I fear, do not live up to the advertising hype. And I'm sure
I'll discover much helpful info -- indices to the 1830-50 censuses alone
will be great.

I think some of you have already taken time to respond to my earlier
message and I thank you for that -- this is SUCH a helpful group.

I'm going to be off on a research trip next week and hope I won't have to
pester you with more questions!

Thanks for ALL your help!

Re: RE: [LegacyUG] Paid Genealogy Search Sites

2006-10-20 Thread Patricia Hickin

Hope it's OK to ask this.

I've decided to give Ancestry a whirl and am totally frustrated -- I don't
expect you to answer this question, but if you can tell me how to get help
from Ancestry I'll appreciate it!

EVERY family tree says my grandparents (born in MD) were married in
Botetourt Co., VA, in 1785. From my personal use of Botetourt Co., marriage
records in person in the courthouse, I know the Bot Co marriage records
begin in 1785.

I do not think my grandparents were in Botetourt Co until the 1790s.

So, I want to look at the BC records in the ame way that you can browse
census images on HeritageQuest.

I FINALLY found on Ancestry Help how to find out what original record groups
are available on Ancestry and how to browse them, but when I attempted to
follow the directions, I lost the Help screen, could not find what I'd been
instructed to look for.

Then I could not find that help screen again.

A few minutes earlier I had sent a question off to Ancestry by email; now I
cannot find out how to do that!!

Before signing up, I thought I read that they had an email group or forum
for help using Ancestry AND finding ancestors. (Like this group for Legacy)
Now I can't find that either.

So I did an individual marriage search and left EVERY field blank except for
county name. It came up with only 70 marriages in a period of about 35
years!

So all I want to know is how to communicate with Ancestry so I can find out
how to get to original images -- or find out whether they're even
available!!

My email address is below.

Many thanks,

Pat

I'd never heard of it, but I just went and had a look and it seems to me
to be a rather different animal to Ancestry, offering a much narrower
range of searches and is therefore not worth as much as Ancestry.

From what I can see - and I may be quite wrong, so others should check it
out for themselves - the main database is other people's trees which they
have entered or uploaded. (This sort of thing is available on Ancestry.)
Any links you may find to other "family members" will only be as accurate
as the research of the people who entered it - it might be guess work,
supposition and invention!

It is *definitely not* a site I would consider subscribing to.

Brian, Could you explain this in more specific, sort of kindergarten terms?
I've put my questions in caps to show what I don't understand--it doesn't
mean that I'm shouting!

Perhaps what I really need is a specific example of what's on the old

suggesting -- is that too complicated??

If this is asking too much, maybe you could just point me to some online

Thanks in advance for any further assistance!

Gathering family information has been for my own pleasure over some years.
From time to time I buy a subscription online or make visits to the local
LDS library to find new stuff. It is for my own use. I do not plan to
publish and none of my offspring seem particularly interested. Gathering
names and dates was the goal. I started with FTM, then migrated to Legacy
after reading some reviews.

Then I come into possession of all the records and notes collected over
the

lifetime of my parents and realize that what they contain will end with me
unless I do something with them.

Along comes the Legacy Users Group. 'Nuff said. I am re-examining my work,
my sources, my format. Why? Pride, I guess. The feeling of a job well
done.
Maybe someday someone will actually look at this stuff. The people here
have
made me realize the importance of accurate information and ways to find
and

document same.

The conversation about sourcing has been particularly helpful. I am
gradually creating my own templates and methods. I have also found useful
tips and tools on this list.

Thanks, and keep on talking!

I signed up at my local library and can now access HeritageQuest Online from
my home computer. I do that several times a week, sometimes for hours at a
time.

For a time we could do the same with Ancestry but that became too expensive
for the library and now I have to go into the library to use it.

At first I had to use their computers (with a 1 1/2 hour time limit) but now
they have wireless and have told me I can bring my laptop in and access
Ancestry (no time limit!). Haven't done it yet, however.

Cynthia,

If you have a library card, you might be able to access Ancestry.com and
some other websites from home through your local library with your library
card. I subscribe to Ancestry.com for US research but I have access through
my library with myy card to Ancestry.com library edition. There are other
electronic resources available this way also. But Heritage Quest is not
one of them. If you can, sign up for Ancestry.com monthly until you decide
if you like it enough to purchase an annual subscription. Believe me, it is
well worth it. Ancestry.com gets very expensive on a monthly basis though.
Family Search and RootsWeb are free, but I like Family Search the best
between the two. I think you can sign up for Genealogy.com for a month at a
time also. So take your pick and enjoy the ride!!!

anybody has subscribed to any of the paid genealogy search sites, like
Ancestry.com. I have used Legacy for a long time, and now that there is an
option to link to numerous sites from within the program, I am wondering if
any of these are more beneficial than others. The subscription are rather

Thanks, Ron,I have a hard time remembering that Legacy is so flexible!

I gather you are talking about the separators options? I hadn't thought
about that and so I have now changed it from slash to dash. I suppose
there's a programming reason that it wouldn't work right (perhaps in a
gedcom export) if there were an option to just keep whatever I entered?

Of course I can always put in explanatory wording, and as I've said I've
been pleased to see that the words don't interfere with the accuracy of the
sorting by date feature.

In entering a date range, I encounter the following problem:

I enter "1910-1915" (without the quotes); what appears is "1910/1915." To
me a slash mark means something more like "it's one or the other, I don't
know which." (I would use a comma if it were something that occurred in
both 1910 and 1915.) But it DOESN'T mean "from . . . to . . .." Is there
a reason for Legacy changing the hyphen to a slash?

I have found that I can add all sorts of explanatory stuff in front of or
after 1910 and the program will still sort the dates correctly. I can
spell out the month and put the date before or after the month and it will
sort correctly. I think that's pretty fantastic myself.

For the three out-of-wedlock children, I do not know the names of the

I tried adding a "dummy father," entering the child and then unlinking

How can I add the three children to Mary and not have to include unknown
fathers or link the children to the known marriage? Ideas...please.

Jon you can not get around the child having a father, in Legacy and in

Legacy needs two people to create a child.
I usually name the father as unknown.
Mary had three liaisons, plus a marraige, thats life

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Fw: Detail Text

Hi Pat,

The first thing with Legacy sourcing is to get your head around the
difference between a Master Source and the Source Detail.

I think you've done that.

Your cousin is the Master Source (however formally you enter her as the
Master Source), each email a Source detail.

It sounds like you've been using the Source Clipboard.
Changing the Source Detail doesn't do anything to the Source Detail Text.
If it's no longer appropriate, you need to delete it.

To correct your error, it may be easier to delete all that Source Detail
Text with Search > Search and Replace and then enter it again in the right
place.

Search for some of the unique text using:
Find where: Citation - Text
Find what: (the unique phrase you choose)
Replacement text: blank - make sure you don't add spaces
How to find: anywhere in the field
How to replace: replace entire field ...

Perhaps it is related to this?:>
On the "Detail Text" screen, there is a box in front of "Add this Text to
the Source Citation on Reports" -- What does this sentence mean?>
1) Every time this source is cited in a report--regardless of the
detail--add this text.??
2) Every time this source WITH this particular detail is cited in a
report, add this text.??
3) The first time this source is cited in a report--regardless of the
detail--add this text.??
4) The first time this source WITH this particular detail is cited in a
report, add this text.??
5) "Add this Text to the Source Citation on Reports"; but otherwise, don't
show it.??
6) "Add this Text to the Source Citation rather than to the Source Detail
on Reports."??

etc

2) is correct.
Note that if the entire Source Detail is identical (Detail, Detail text,
comments - I haven't checked pictures as I stopped adding source pics)
then the Master Source with that particular source detail only prints once
in a report, however many times it is cited. That's why it is not a good
idea to put, for example, the transcription of a census household in the
Source Detail Text and bold the relevant person if the whole household is
in your database.

=
Also on the "Edit Master Source Definition" screen--"Text of Source" tab,
I don't know what it means on that Text screen, lower left where you can
choose to "Include on reports" either the "First time" or "Each time" -- I
understand the "Each Time" (I think), but by "First Time" does it mean

1)the first time this particular individual is mentioned ??
or
2) the first time this source appears in the source notes, regardless of
the individual it refers to. ??

=

2) is correct

I do apologize for being so long-winded, but can somebody tell me how to
paste text into the "Detail Text" and have it show up with that detail
ONLY??
I want the "Detail Text" to attach to the detail and NOT to the entire
Master Source.)

It does - somehow you were adding a source with its details and not
clearing the detail text tab when it was not relevant. Easy to do when
using the Source Clipboard. :-(

When you entered the new information and sourced it, did you do it all
"from scratch" or did you use the clipboard?

I ask because I just did some entries in my Test File doing just what
you say you did and did not have the same result. The first time I
created a new Master Source, created Detail Information and then typed
in some Detail Text. Next I went to another person and entered some
data, selected the same Master Source, created similar but slightly
different Detail Information and then opened the Detail Text screen,
which was blank as I would have expected.

I had the boxes checked for "Add this detail to the source citation on

printed out just as I would have expected - each reference to the Master

Your understanding of Detail Information and Detail Text is quite
correct. I can only think that you inadvertently made a wrong move

Gensmart to Legacy. Although it showed up fully on Gensmart but when I went
into Legacy there was nothing there.

I sent emails to both Gensmart and Legacy support on Saturday and have only
received a reply from Gensmart, saying that the problem is not with them.

Can anyone help me with this, before I commit hari kari.

Regards

Lin

For my census sources I have combined what is
presented on the TMG sources videos with what is provided on the
  ProGenealogist website:
  http://www.progenealogists.com/commoncitations.htm

I find that the combination of the two results in
sources that print very close to the Mills standard, tell me all that I need
to know, and are more or less formulaic in their entry.

At first it seems like a constant back-and-forth
process - from the guidelines to the program. After a bit, it becomes second
nature. I feel that my sources look more or less professional, and certainly
could guide any reader to the original.

I know everyone needs to find their own thing.
After my import from The Master Genealogixt, it has taken me forever to clean

direction. (Til the next revelation. Groan, please no.)

Pat,
If you are on the parents family view, and click on View -> Children
List, you will see the children listed, and at the bottom is the
"Relationship to Father" etc. - this is where you find the Natural
term.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the use of the word Natural.
Something to think about!

[LegacyUG] Fw: Detail Text

2006-10-17 Thread Patricia Hickin

Here is the entire message, part of which I
accidentally mailed earlier.

- Original Message -
From: Patricia Hickin

To: LEGACY
Sent: Tuesday, October 17, 2006 4:25 PM
Subject: Detail Text

Before I begin, let me say that I think Legacy is a GREAT program with
amazing options and flexibility and basically I love its complexity.  But
often I cannot understand certain terms and explanations.

Specifically,
What is the meaning of the terms "Detail
information" and "Detail Text"?

I have a source entitled "Email from Virginia
Cousin to PPH[me]."
In the detail, I enter the subject line, date and
time of the email.

Today I have been going thru emails from her, some
of which are several months old, and entering info from them into my maternal
database.

In one case I copied the email in its entirety and
pasted it in the "Detail Text" screen -- it was from a July 9 email in
regard to the marriage of a roomer/cousin who lived with my grandparents in the
1920s.

Then I entered info from other emails from her to a
number of other cousins -- most of these were from other emails and thus the
detail info changed frequently..

Then I came across another email (Sept 12)
that I wanted to quote in its entirety.

It had to do with the date a
COLLATERAL ancestor of her FATHER married a COLLATERAL ancestor of our
maternal granndmother, so as usual I used the Master Source "Email from
Virginia Cousin to PPH"  and in the Detail, I entered the new subject
line, new email date, and time, then clicked on "Detail Text" to paste in the
text of the Sept 12 email.  I assumed the "Detail Text" would be empty --
right?!

WRONG! Lo and behold
the text from the July 9 email was still there!!!  So this means, I assume,
that I have now have info about a my maternal grandparents' 1920 roomer
attached to entries about my cousin's new granddaughter's birth
(2006), her paternal great-great grandmother (1815) and God knows what
else.

If I want to attach something to EVERY entry
of the source, I can do that on the "Edit Master Source Definition" screen by
clicking on the "Text of Source" tab.

SO-O-O - What have I done wrong?

Perhaps it is related to this?:>
On the "Detail Text" screen, there is a box in
front of "Add this Text to the Source Citation on Reports" -- What does this
sentence mean?>
1) Every time this source is cited in a
report--regardless of the detail--add this text.??
2) Every time this source WITH this particular
detail is cited in a report, add this text.??
3) The first time this source is cited in
a report--regardless of the detail--add this text.??
4) The first time this source WITH
this particular detail is cited in a report, add this text.??
5) "Add this Text to the Source Citation on
Reports"; but otherwise, don't show it.??
6) "Add this Text to the Source Citation rather
than to the Source Detail on Reports."??
etc
=
Also on the "Edit Master Source Definition"
screen--"Text of Source" tab, I don't know what it means on that Text screen,
lower left where you can choose to "Include on reports" either the "First
time" or "Each time" -- I understand the "Each Time" (I think), but by "First
Time" does it mean
1)the first time this particular individual is
mentioned ??
or
2) the first time this source appears in the
source notes, regardless of the individual it refers to. ??
=

And to conclude, there are the SAME 4 TABS on
theSOURCE DETAIL screen and on the  MASTER SOURCE screen (the
latter also has a fifth tab: "Repository.)"
So what is the point of having the DETAIL entries
if it does not mean that they will attach to the particular detail and NOT to
the MASTER SOURCE?

I do apologize for being so long-winded, but can
somebody tell me how to paste text into the "Detail Text" and have it show
up with that detail ONLY??
I want the "Detail Text" to attach to the
detail and NOT to the entire Master Source.)

Thanks in advance for your always helpful
advice!!

Pat

[LegacyUG] Never married and no children option

2006-10-16 Thread Patricia Hickin
At the bottom of the Individual Edit screen this sentence appears, with a
box to check in front of it:

"This individual never married and had no children."

Why are these two facts linked together without any other option?

Why not two sentences:
"This individual never married."
"This individual had no children."

I have two half 2x great grandaunts who each had a child out of wedlock.
One later got married; the other never did.

Another problem with this sentence is that I do not know how on earth
anybody knows for sure that (almost) any man had no children, including in
some/many cases the man himself.

It seems to me it would be better to use this sentence (without the extra
caps!):

"This individual had no KNOWN children."

Is there some reason that this option is worded in the way it is???

On the Marriage screen there are two similar sentences:
"This couple did not marry."
"This couple had no children."

So why can't there be two sentences on the individual screen???

When I first began using Legacy, I imported a GEDCOM and the children
were all imported with a "Natural" relationship to their parents. But
when I now enter a child in Legacy, I have to remember to select
Natural. It would be nice (for me) if Legacy would automatically
choose Natural when a child is linked to parents. (Is there an option
for this? If not, could there be an option to select for this?)

I think it is important to have this information, because it can be
crucial to sourcing how you found out who the parents were to this
child. You won't always remember how you discovered that Joe DOE was
the father to Mary DOE.

On another note, I have used Child Status to indicate "Niece" when a
girl went from being listed as Niece to Daughter in her Aunt's
household over many years of census returns, and I had no information
on who her parents were. So it can be used if there are ambiguous
relationships without documentation showing adoption, etc.

With regards to the original question, the two relationships take up
two fields, not just one, so that is probably why it is not an option.
If you add Stepchild to the Child Status list, how will you know from
the family view who is the Stepparent? You may wish to think through
this before making changes.

Re: [LegacyUG] How do I cancel all of my to do list

2006-10-14 Thread Patricia Hickin
I haven't tried deleting, but I did go to the TO-DO LIST, highlighted the
first entry, held down the shift-key and went to the last item and clicked
on it. As a result my entire list was highlighted.

It seems to me that you could then hit the Delete key OR go to Options and
click on Delete. That SHOULD delete all of them. I didn't want to see if
it worked, but you might try it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering source details

2006-10-13 Thread Patricia Hickin
Cathy,

May I ask, If YOU were going to do some experimenting, what would you
start with for printing out--what reports? I think I want an Ancestor
book for my mother's side, but perhaps a descendasnt book for my father's
side.

I like factual detail, pictures, narrative, stories, sources.

[LegacyUG] Passenger Express--where do I get help!?

2006-08-31 Thread Patricia Hickin

I just downloaded the free version of Passenger
Express and am just beginning the process of creating my first
project.

Where do I go to get help?  (There is no
"Help"option listed on the bar.)
Is there a PE support mail list for PE as there is
for Legacy.
(I've gotten an error message that
says:
    Error
    !     An error
occurred in OpenImageDesigner.

(401) Can't show non-modal form when modal form is displayed.)

I haven't the FOGGIEST notion of what that
means.
I have no idea of what to do next except to click
OK.

Also at the beginning, it told me to choose a
picture, but did not give me an opportunity to choose one of my pictures --
it just had a dozen or so pictures of other people's families to choose
from.  I haven't added any pictures into my Legacy files since I want too
be sure I have them organized the way I want them, since I assume Legacy won't
be able to find them if I change the folder (or the name of a folder) a picture
is in. Do I have to have the pictures already added into
my Legacy file?

Also on the title page, where I had told it to
say "Our Patline-Matline Family Heritage" it only says  "Our
Patline-Matline Family Her."

On the title page (where the menu buttons are),
when I click on "Legacy file" nothing happens/opens, though I imported a Legacy
file and it has told me the import is complete.

I'm not expecting the Legacy User Group to answer
these questions, but I am hoping you CAN tell me where to go to get the
answers!

Thanks!

Pat Hickin

Well -- I spoke too clearly. When I attempted to open my newly downloaded
and unlocked Legacy Deluxe on my laptop this AM, it was nowhere to be
found!

I did a search on the entire C drive for *.exe and found THOUSANDS of
files, including my old Legacy from the recycle bin. Buit nowhere was the
new one to be found. I looked at it last night! NOW what has happened??

Should I just go thru the whole download and install rigamarole again? (I
closed my computer down entirely last night, AFTER closing my new Legacy.)

Pat

Dave,

Thanks a million -- I tried your suggestion (below) -- that was the
problem. I followed your directions and everything worked like a dream
thereafter!

Thanks again for your help and for responding so quickly!

It appears that the Legacy program is still on your computer and is
running! If you press the three keys Ctrl, Alt and Delete all at the
same time you will get a Task Manager window which will show what
programs (Applications) are running. If Legacy is listed, highlight
it and click on End Task. You should now be able to delete those 3
files.

I'm a long time (v. 3+) Legacy User now using V. 6 Deluxe. For the first
time I'm facing a very major merge and have a question re: merging of sources.
I've read the manual, help files, etc and either can't find the answer or
  don't understand the directions.

Question is, when merging, do all sources transfer?

A specific example: On the left is John Doe with a birth date of "Abt
1850" and the sources include several census records. On the right is John Doe
with a birth date of "4 July 1850" and the sources are a church record and a
birth record. The information to be kept (right box checked) is "4 July 1850".
When merged will the resulting info be "4 July 1850"  [yes]  with
all sources including the census records, the church record and the birth
  record  [? - THE QUESTION] ?
Thanx in advance for your help.

[LegacyUG] HELP! needed with LEGACY 6 DeLuxe UNINSTALL

2006-08-16 Thread Patricia Hickin
I have been unable to open Legacy on my laptop yesterday and today (had a
problem closing it a couple days ago; I suppose that's what started the
problem).

So I went online and it seemed to me that what I need to do is to
"completely uninstall Legacy."

(Before doing any of this I ran my fully updated anti-virus and anti-spyware
programs and both reported "no errors.")

So I have followed the online instructions from the Legacy OnLine help site
and done the uninstall. Now I am at the stage that says > from My Computer,
open C:\Legacy [folder], which I've done.

It says to "delete all the files but not any of the folders." There were
several dozen files and I deleted ALL of them easily EXCEPT for 3 files,
which I could not delete. One had no extension but had the Legacy shield as
the icon. The other two were Legacy.ldb and Legacy.lng. The computer
refused to delete any of the three, saying that they were open, perhaps
being used by another user, etc.

Well, I had not opened them, and nobody else was using them, but I closed
the C drive and My Computer, and I shut the computer down to Restart, and
tried again.

I was still unable to delete any of these 3 files.

So can somebody tell me either
1) That it's OK to leave them and install on top of them -- or wherever.
OR
2) How to get rid of them?

I don't know why it's telling me they're open when I have not opened them!

Thanks SO much for any help.

Pat H.

And another sort of weird one that I call
   Also living with
I use it to put in the name(s), ages, etc. of relatives, servants, etc. that
I pick up from a census.

I have a bunch of others, but I find both of these quite helpful.

(Sorry I cannot do apostrophes, quotes, etc.)

I wanted to ask. I have seen some instances of TMG users sharing event
definitions and wondered, does anyone have any Legacy ones to share?

I assume that many people will have created new events and/or changed
existing ones. It would be great to see how people are putting these to
use.

Anyone care to share?

We seem to have a rather curious situation as regards report printing
from Legacy.

If I print to Legacy pdf, an RTF is first created that looks terrific,
which one glimpses on its way to the pdf; all is formatted correctly -
title page, contents, pictures properly aligned, captions as they
should be. BUT one cannot then of course edit it to get rid of the
'unknowns' and other grammatical glitches, and the PDF is not
compatible with modern standards.

If I print to rtf, intending to print to an Acrobat printer, the RTF
is not at all the same as that created in the above para - most but
not all pictures are left justified, captions read [caption John Doe],
section headings are different etc. Loads of editing needed.

Is there a way to get hold of the RTF created by Legacy on the way to
a PDF? or to get a more modern PDF converter installed?

I do have Acrobat 6 Professional on my computer, but it can only work
with what it's given

Warm regards :-)

Arnold,

The soon-to-be-released training video, "Picturing your Legacy: a Video
Guide to Working with Digital Pictures in Legacy" explains these
situations

in detail. Basically there are 2 rules when digitizing pictures/documents:
1) scan at a higher resolution, which it seems that you are and 2) save as
an archival-type image format. This would include .tif and .bmp. I
wouldn't

suggest .gifs if you're wanting to retail all the image data.

The following training CDs will be available hopefully early next week:

- Picturing your Legacy: a Video Guide to Working with Digital Pictures in
Legacy
- Creating and Sharing Perfect Reports
- Insider's Guide to Legacy: Tips & Tricks

I am experimenting with the book options in

I began by clicking Reports, Publishing Center, and
from "Available Items" I selected "Ancestor Book Report."  I created a pdf
file and a txt file.

(I don't see any way to edit it without using a
.txt file.  I copied the .txt file into Word Perfect.)

My question has to do with endnote numbers.
In the pdf file, they show as superscript numbers, as they should.  But in
the .txt file I lose the formatting and the numbers no longer appear as
superscript numbers.

To get to my specific question, can Legacy
produce a document that can both 1) be edited and 2) retains the endnote
numbers as superscript numbers?

Hi Pat,
The words in square brackets are a field code and must be exact.
If you really have [Full Name] (with a space) it won't work.

[FullName] should.

I am just starting to put source info in my databases,
although I have been using Legacy for several years.

I am currently putting obit text in the Event window's
Notes tab. I have found that, in the Descendant
Narrative and Book, what you put in Event's Notes is
placed inline in the body of the document under
Events. If you put in Source, Deatil, Detail Text it
appears in the endnotes.

I personally feel that things like obits go in the
body of the document, but details from a census page
go in the endnotes, so I capture them accordingly.

Hi LUG'ies!

Just curious--where do most of you enter the actual
text of an obituary?

Should the obituary text be entered under a person's
Events, cite the Source, then in the Source Details
window, do most of you enter the obit under the Text
tab?

Further, I have this nice person in my family who
sends me tons of obituaries (what a blessing!)of
family members, many of whom I am unfamiliar. It's
great to get the obits, but she doesn't include any
of the source infomation: eg. newspaper name,
published date, page, column.

How would you enter this obituary information?
Create an "Unknown" source, or create an
"Obituary-on-File" source, then enter the obit in
the Source Details window?

Just wanna know what most of you do in these
situations.

Thanks for the input!

Re: [LegacyUG] Where to Enter Obits?

2006-07-25 Thread Patricia Hickin
What about UNC? (unidentified newspaper clipping), which no doubt would have
appeared in the local newspaper where the person lived and the approximate
date -- soon after the person died.

If reasonably recent you can do a Google search and find the name of
newspaper, date, and obituary itself. Most cities have only one or two
newspapers and maintain obituary archives.

Richard,

I use the Obituary event and have changed the default Event Definition for
If Desc, Date and Place are empty to the following:

[HisHer] obituary was published in an unknown newspaper [Sources] [cr]
[cr][Notes]

Mike

Hi LUG'ies!

Just curious--where do most of you enter the actual text of an obituary?

Should the obituary text be entered under a person's Events, cite the
Source, then in the Source Details window, do most of you enter the obit
under the Text tab?

Further, I have this nice person in my family who sends me tons of
obituaries (what a blessing!)of family members, many of whom I am
unfamiliar. It's great to get the obits, but she doesn't include any of the
source infomation: eg. newspaper name, published date, page, column.

How would you enter this obituary information? Create an "Unknown" source,
or create an "Obituary-on-File" source, then enter the obit in the Source
Details window?

Just wanna know what most of you do in these situations.

Thanks for the input!

Re: [LegacyUG] To keep or not to keep?

2006-07-25 Thread Patricia Hickin
Consider donating them to a local historical library -- you can probably put
them on a closed deposit (and retain ownership and control over who sees
what) for a number of years -- they can be a great source for social history
of ordinary -- or important -- students of history and genealogy in later
years. Transcribed letters just don t convey

the personality/mood of the writer in the same way that an original does.

Genealogy has mainly been a lark for me over the years fueled by
curiosity.
Filling in the blanks was the goal, not documenting every word. Using
Legacy
made me rethink my approach, along with communication with a cousin who
does
it the "right" way. Her records made me realize that it is important for
my

descendents to be able to find where I got my information. I am slowly
documenting what I can of my research instead of gleefully adding
names...not much fun in that! This list is being enormously helpful.

When my parents died (father in 1996 and mother in 2003), I gathered all
the
papers they had saved relating to genealogy. Happily, I had spent time
with
each of them identifying old photos and documenting stories. The papers
have
been sitting for a long time. A few months ago, I finally started
organizing

and transcribing them. I am archiving original legal and other important
documents, of course. However, there were reams of letters and notes from
family members. I have transcribed them verbatim and noted that they were
handwritten letters from so-and-so, then discarded them to save space. Now
I

am thinking that I am destroying original records and should be given 20
lashes! But, says me, these are like oral history, not solid documents
like

birth certificates and such. It seems that trying to keep every scrap of
paper is unwieldy and unnecessary.

How do you decide what to preserve?

Judie

[LegacyUG] TWO GENERATIONS ONLY- -WIIH SPOUSES

2006-07-25 Thread Patricia Hickin

Thanks, Kay and Cathy, for the help, but I'm getting too much
information  with both the Family Group sheet and the Descendant report in
the Book section --my fault, I wasn't clear about wanting just names
only.
What I want is JUST this (e.g.):
John Doe m. 1) Ann Smith
Children:
John Doe, Jr. m. Mary Jones
Agnes Doe m. Henry Brown
Robert Doe m 1) Kate Johnson 2) Nancy Hanks
Casper Doe m Anita Jackson
etc. for all the children
John Doe m 2) Alice Miller
Children:
George Doe m Ann Jackson
Jasper Doe m Martha Randolph
Frances Doe m Jonathan Green
===
No dates, no places, no grandchildren, no sentences -- just first and last
names of couple, and their children and spouses.

If I do want dates, I'd like them simple: John Doe (1749-1829) m 1773 Ann
Smith (1752-1846).

I could use these simple lists as research guides -- for example when
I'm browsing a census and interested in seeing whose living next door to whom
and for having all the intermarriages stand out without a lot of clutter.
I'm not sure this makes sense
It's VERY easy to do this in Family TreeMaker, either with or without dates,
and though I like Legacy much better for most things, like so many other Legacy
users I find the report options disappointing.
Also, I'm continuing to add individuals and to have to continually produce a
gedcom, export it and import it into FTM is a nuisance-- maybe Legacy and FTM
could "merge" and give us the best of both worlds!! :-)
Anyway, if anyone knows how to generate the above kind of data from Legacy,
I'll really appreciate your help.

[LegacyUG] TWO GENERATIONS ONLY- -WITH SPOUSES

2006-07-23 Thread Patricia Hickin
Often I just want to view or print out the name of a parent and spouse with
all their children and spouses, but no children.
If i do a descendant report with 2 generations, I get the parents and
children, but no spouses. I have to go to 3 generations to get the spouses
of the children included--and since most of them had a dozen children, each
of whom had a dozen children, that is just too much info.

Can somebody tell me how to get it to print or create a report of one set
of parents with all their children and all the children's spouses, but NO
grandchildren!?

Thanks!,

Re: [LegacyUG] Key code Assignments

2006-07-02 Thread Patricia Hickin
This would be a bit cumbersome, but until you get a program that enable you
yo do that, you could list all the items you want to use in a Word or WP
document, keep the document open, and then simply highly the phrase/clause,
do a control C, go back to the Legacy spot where you want to enter it and do
a control V.

At least its less trouble than typing the whole thing in each time.

Has anyone come across or know of a program that will allow for the
assignment of variable and text to a series of key sequences? In working
with both legacy and Clooz, there are notes/remarks areas (memo fields)
that
I would like to do something like "2006-Jun-08: Visited the home place
with
one of the daughters." This would be that the date (year, month day, or
some

other combination could be assigned to a key, example a function key and
then when the entries are being done the information would be obtained
from

the pressing of the function key or a sequence of keys - alt Function key.

[LegacyUG] Descendant list--1st ancestor in a particular line to me

2006-06-24 Thread Patricia Hickin

So sorry to bother you again!

I don't think there's a way to do this easily, but just thought I'd ask!

I want to make a list of Paternal line and spouse, down to me -- just
husband and wife (with dates and maybe pob and pod), each ancestor and
spouse in order.

e.g. John Stag (dob-dod)-Jane Doe (dob-dod)
John Stag, Jr. (dob-dod)-Mary Deer (dob-dod)
Henry Stag (dob-dod) - Ann Hare (dob-dod)
Zachary Stag (dob-dod) - Juanita Moose (dob-dod)
Husband of me (dob-dod) - Me (dob-dod)

Just the direct lineage from ancestor to me (actually I want to do this for
a cousin) with dates and maybe locations.
I want to do this for each ancestor down -- no extra spouses; no siblings.

I don't see a way to do that, except manually-- or I guess I could do a
descendant list and save to a text file and go thru and delete everybody I
didn't want?

Or is there a way to tag everybody in the direct lineage? I know how to get
them bolded--is there a way to get the bolded ones tagged?

I looked for Focus Groups in Help but found nothing.

I feel as though I am really pestering the group !

I do want to say that by and large I really like Legacy and I REALLY
appreciate all the help I've received so far!!

Hi Pat,

At the end of the location line, the first icon is a downward arrow. If
the wrong completion comes up, click on that icon and you will see your
other entries. Then select the previously entered location that you want.
Very fast and convenient.

Joan.

When I set up a source such as a Birth record / certificate I enter all the
relevant text from the certificate into the *Text* field in the source. This
then becomes printed / displayed as a part of the source

ie: GRO, Birth Certificate for Robert James Atkinson.(1869) Registered at
Clerkenwell RD, Amwell SD, in the County of Middlesex on 9 January 1869,
no.251. Robert James, born on 7 December 1869 at 10 Cold Bath Square, father
James Box Atkinson, warehouse porter, mother Frances Jane Atkinson formerly
Bishop, informant James B Atkinson, father residing at 10 Cold Bath Square
Clerkenwell.

I also do the same with Census sources
ie: PRO, 1851 UK Census for William Street (Published on-line by
"Ancestry.co.uk" - 2005). 10 Brittania Gardens, St Leonards Shoreditch,
Tower Hamlets. William Street, head, 27, Stick Dresser, born in Broadwall,
Surrey. Emma Street, wife, 25, born in London. William Street, son, 2,
scholar, born in London.

I do have a separate source for each item rather than 'lumping them
together'. I do this because it is easier for me to manage my sources this
way and it enables me to link a picture of the relevant certificate or
record to each source.

Hope this helps

David

Births Registered in Boston, Suffolk, MA. For each child I entered the

When I look at the source for the various residences for my ggrandfather I
see the source and details, but I don't know which child they are linked to.
At least I don't see who it is without having to go back to the list of
children and match up the year of birth. Is there a better way of entering
this information for the events so I know who the birth source is linked to?

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Types

2006-06-21 Thread Patricia Hickin

Cathy,
I just tried this (It looks complicated, but it takes only a few
minutes):

Click on each of the following in turn:
   View
   Master Lists
   Sources
   Options
   Print
PDF File radio button in lower right-hand corner
   Create (in upper right-hand corner)
   Save (in lower right-hand corner)
(Open the new file in Adobe)
   File
   Save as text
   (Give it a file name)
(Open your word processor to a new document-- I use Word Perfect.)
   Insert
Click on the text file you just saved, after it's inserted into your
new WP or Word document you next do a Find and replace, as
follows:

   Edit
   Find and Replace
   Match
   Codes
(Locate HRt--(Hard Return on the list of codes))
Insert (1x in the Find box)
Insert (2x in the Replace box)
   Replace All

And there your sources are, with a double space between each of the sources.

Check to be sure you don't have any unwanted Hard Returns.

This sounds complicated, but takes only a few minutes.

At this point you could go thru the list and at the beginning of each source
give it a 1 or 2-letter code to indicate the type and then do a Sort on
"first word in paragraph", and you'd have them grouped by source.

(This is the only part that is time-consuming, and if LEGACY would offer an
option of adding the Source Type at the beginning of each source, that could
speed things up considerably. How hard would theat be to do??)

What do you think??

Pat

Hi Patricia,
Currently you can't produce a bibliography with a Legacy Report - just
endnotes of the sources used.
I guess you could use a Place Holder in a Legacy Book and produce a Source
Report with sources used in the Book but it wouldn't be straightforward to
collect the relevant master sources.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Types

2006-06-18 Thread Patricia Hickin
Since large bibliographies ordinarily group the sources by types, how does
one print the bibliography so that all sources of a particular type are
grouped together?

That's actually what I'm currently doing too, but it just seemed silly
that
you can't view sources by type. Hopefully that will be a future
enhancement.

Thanks for the link to your sources, very interesting.

I finally resorted to including the type as part of my master source
title.

If Legacy later offers the ability to view by source type, I will probably
remove them. You can see my complete source list at www.roots2buds.net.
Just click on "Sources."

Keith's Question:
Is there a way to filter the source list by source type? For instance I
want

to see only sources of type "book" in the source list.

Re: [LegacyUG] EDITING LOCATIONS, tagging, etc.

2006-06-18 Thread Patricia Hickin
What I'm looking for is a list I can select individuals, one by one, from
to edit--then delete the individual I've edited from the list.-- somehow I'm
beginning to get the impression there's no such thing--!?? Guess I
shouldn't complain as I'm SO-O-O impressed with all the options Legacy does
offer.

Select LOCATIONS icon>OPTIONS>PRINT>LOCATION REPORT>INCLUDE tab>ONLY
TAGGED LOCATIONS radio button

Then PREVIEW and if o.k., select PRINT

Good luck,

Why not a short phrase like "AKA", "called" or "often called" or "known as"
or maybe simply "or" ?

Re: [LegacyUG] Census data in Legacy

2006-06-18 Thread Patricia Hickin
I just post it to the notes fr the head of the household, though sometimes I
add info like place of birth or age/approximate year of birth to various
individuals and cite the Census.

That's how I do it. If there is an easier way would love to hear of it.

I would appreciate any tips that anyone has
about how they handle census in Legacy. Since you can't link more than one
person to the census data (like the Witness function in TMG), do you just
save it to Clipboard, then go to each individual in the census household
and

add the event?

Thanks for any assistance with this - or other tips from those who have
migrated from TMG to Legacy.

Assigning it to what?

Maybe I have figured out what you meant...

I think you misunderstand what tagging a location does. Tagging a
location in the Location List does *not* tag the individuals who use the
location. It simply tags the location record. And location records only
have one available tag #. I use this mostly when importing a partial
list of locations from one file to another.
