Re: [LegacyUG] Set Relationships Not Showing
I wasn't looking in the right place for the relationship title. Then I had a multi-colored background and it wasn't showing through. Changed the foreground and background colors and low and behold I can now see the relationships. Thanks all for your help. I just did the check/repair and everything appears ok, no messages after wards. Still the relationship is not showing where the husband and wife titles appear. Re: [LegacyUG] v7 & Familysearch
The tree portion on FamilySearch labs is a very distant future version. Right now LDS members in very selected areas around the world are using the current version. It's not ready for world-wide distribution in its current format. I'm sure that is also why Legacy is saying the FamilySearch feature will be a long time in coming. They just need to plan ahead for it. Someday you will be able to link your people in Legacy to the people on the new FamilySearch and sync information between each other. It will have the ability to link the records found in Records Search on the FS Labs - all those images in the Granite Mountain vault. Very exciting things to come from FamilySearch and Legacy is preparing to let us access that in the future. [LegacyUG] Legacy Tip - Index view
One of my favorite Legacy tips is how the table set up in the index view has a spreadsheet function I love. Just not sure what you call it so I will describe it. If you look at the bottom left hand side of the "table" you will see next to the arrow a little black section. When you put your mouse over it it will display a double line and an arrow down. If you click and drag it will move a "line" over to what part of the table you want to always view. This is usually the name for me. Then I can scroll through the list and see what every subject I am interested in with the name of the person always in view. You just have to set the arrows at the bottom to let you scroll around that way. Well they are in the middle of one thing innovative. The ability for Legacy to work with the New FamilySearch program. Sure would love to be fly listening in on their planning sessions. Renee, Unfortunately the "it would require a complete program rewrite" has become the standard mantra for the Millennia folks. They want to stay competitive, but they refuse to offer any of the features that their competition does offer. Both TMG and Genbox offer a witness feature. Genbox is able to handle same sex relationships, both offer outstanding charts and reports. Don't hold your breath waiting for anything innovative from Millennia because it will require a complete program re-write. Search the archives and see how many times that mantra has been chanted. Now that was a very logical and excellent point. You have made me re-think my position. I would think that should settle the matter. Should Legacy be developed along the lines of a Family History (FH) program or a Genealogical (Gen) program? My gut feel is that the 'FH' route will be much more complex with the associated development and maintenance costs and greater learning curve - and a higher price tag! There are many 'Gen' fixes and enhancements which we have already requested and which could fall by the wayside if the 'FH' side is developed. Yes that is what I meant. Sorry I was rushing when I wrote my other email. Though it is possible to transfer a pdf or jpeg to tif why would anyone bother with such a large file without the details that way. I was just stating archival standards we are of course able to do whatever we wish. If I want to scan a book that is very readable I will make a pdf with ocr options. If the book has old handwriting then I want tif images so I can blow up and examine it in detail. RE: [LegacyUG] RE: Scan File Formats
Archives use 400 dpi TIF format to scan and preserve their collections. This has become an acceptable standard. With a TIF you then can reformat it to a JPEG or PDF to share. You cannot take a JPEG or PDF and change them into a TIF. So for digitizing your rare photos for archival purposes use TIF. The JPEG images made from them can be used to link to the Legacy program or share with others. Believe me you only want to scan your collection once - having learned that the hard way! Personally I would wait to enter them. In Legacy 7 they have added a button to attach Documents and PDFs so you don't have to struggle to get them in as you do now. There were no changes to the notes section when I saw the preview. As for formats, Geoff didn't have a list of everything it would accept. My main interest was docs and pdfs.Renee Zamorawww.harrisena.com Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 11:17:27 -0400From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [LegacyUG] Ver. 7 Documentation TemplatesI just listened to Myrt's interview with Goeff and would like to know if the Ver. 7 documentation templates will be compatible with Ver. 6 entry forms. As usual, I've procrastinated and now have a HUGE stack of things to enter. Should I do it now in Ver. 6 or hold off for Ver. 7 "some time this fall"? Or is this one of those unanswerable questions? Will the file calls for documents be improved? What formats? B,m,d & census images, etc should be called and handled differently than grandpa's face photos. Before I scan/convert them, it should be to something useful and compatible. Will Notes displays and printouts be the same in Ver. 7. It took a while in Ver. 6 for my head to grasp which would show and where and which would not. (g)Thanks - really looking forward to the next version. I wouldn't worry about marking the end of a male line in your database. When Legacy 7 comes out you could create a chart of all male descendants. Coolness, I didn't know that one. I've clicked every where but there! Re: [LegacyUG] Favorite Legacy Tip
I had a problem with Advanced Set Living catching all those "living" in the 1500s (or whatever) time frame. I guess there were to many unknown dates around them. If I remember correctly some loose people in my surname studies that only had event dates didn't get picked up either. Since I put estimated birth dates on them it's not such a problem anymore. Having gone through my entire database of living individuals to set them correctly has taught me to look for an easier way! Now I guess we have two tips to share on this subject: Advanced Set Living (under tools) and Living Indicator Options > Customise - Data Defaults. Re: [LegacyUG] cost of upgrade to Legacy 7
To answer your question yes the upgrade cost to version 7 should be cheaper than buying a new full version 6 with the free upgrade. Check the prices on the Legacy website for upgrade from 5 to 6. I was told at BYU that the cost "should be" the same. Of course we didn't have anything is writting. I guess stupid people like me would buy a full cost version 6 again with the free upgrade. But, I thought I would try to sell my "old" version 6 without the upgrade on eBay. If any of you old version 5 people are interested in it contact me by private email. I haven't listed it on eBay yet. Just remember it's doesn't have the free upgrade to 7, you have to purchase that. Re: [LegacyUG] Examples of sourcing a Message Board & Rootsweb family tree
I actually do publish the email address on my RootsWeb WorldConnect. I told my daughter if I die to go in there and put a messages that I have. I want anyone looking at my records to be able to contact the person I have listed as the sources of the information. I don't want to worry about all my hard work going up in smoke just because I died. Sources should tell you where to find the information again. Re: [LegacyUG] cost of upgrade to Legacy 7
While at the BYU Family History and Genealogy Conference I bought version 6 again. (In hopes that Legacy will send me version 7 before it hits the retail stores. No promises made but I can dream anyways.) There was a sticker on the box that said "FREE Upgrade to version 7". Inside the box was were instructions on how to register and receive version 7 when it comes out. So I would assume anyone buying from the Legacy store would get the same type of instructions. I have no idea when Legacy started to promise the free upgrade to version 7 with a purchase of version 6. But I know my original version 6 didn't have that offer. (I bought it when it was released.) I would of had to purchase or upgrade to version 7 when it came out anyways. If you just bought version 6 I would call Legacy (number on website) and ask if it comes with a free upgrade. So the answer to your question - it depends on when you bought version 6 if the upgrade to 7 will cost or not. I do believe you are able to create your own source template. There are many, many options using sources. I will look on Thurs to make sure. Renee Zamora www.harrisena.com - Original Message - From: "Joe" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2007 5:09 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Sneak Peek of Legacy 7 The Mills book is basically how to reference genealogical sources correctly. The version I looked at was outdated (1996?) and I don't recall it showing how to reference some forms of electronic media. "Genealogists" take this as the authority on how to source from what I gather. I try to abide by MLA formatting with my sources since my wife is an English professor (She can spell-I can't) :) APA is another popular sourcing format for the pseudo sciences such as psychology and sociology (My majors in college). Google is your friend on these formats. From what I gathered from Renee's review is that we will have source templates. That is what I am thrilled about. Now that I think about it I hope we are allowed to build our own templates in whatever format we chose and not have to be "married" only to Mill's templates. I can only hope. Sourcing has been somewhat weak in this program and I miss using the now defunct Ultimate Family Tree that would allow me to format my source templates how I wanted. That program was actually one of the first programs to have Mill's templates built in to it. There were a lot of features in that program I would like to see implemented into Legacy. That program kicked arse and was years ahead of its time in ease of use and functionality. TMG tried to do this, but it became too complex for most users and IMHO is counter-intuitive. Oh and thanks to FTM for killing that program. Don't get me wrong Legacy filled it's shoes for my use and I like the mom and pops approach business model they have. More of a family all of us are because of it and these folks are very respectful even with what comes through this list :) Basically, it sounds like Legacy is growing up and I am glad to see the push on better sourcing options within the program as long as it maintains it's intuitiveness and data integrity. I pray the Legacy programming gurus give us the option to build our own templates. I'll be glad to lend you my UFT with it's Windows 3.1 16 bit GUI functionality overlaid on foxpro 16bit to take a gander at :) Joe Valeris Garton wrote: Could some one please tell me what this book is that has been referred to here ? Re: [LegacyUG] User ID and AFN
The codes I use for my User Ids is the 4 main lines I am researching. Harris is Paternal Grandfather, Miller is my Paternal Grandmother. Weatherwax is my mother's line and Zamora is my husband's line. When my Harris and Miller lines merge I use the code H&M to show that. Since I don't have any duplicate first letters. I would do as was previous mentioned by Jenny Benson. ABC's or M1, M2, etc. The important thing is that you understand what the code means. The reason I have these codes in the User ID field and not as events or tags is because I like to go into the index and sort by User ID field and make sure everyone is coded after adding a group of people. I also don't show RINs on people I show the User ID field so I see the codes all the time. I set relationships to me and added codes for my line and then set the relationships to my husband and do his line. Since I like to add families that I think are related to me in a given area but haven't proved (surname studies) I will make codes like H-Beadleston so I know I think they belong to the Beadleston's in my Harris line but they are unlinked. Everyone in my database has a code and seeing the codes allow me to know if I want to continue research on someone. If I see a code H1C2R-2W (Harris 1st cousin 2 times removed second wife) I know I don't want to research their parents. Whenever I use the dashes it means its' a different blood line. I do have a H1C2R-2W-1H (it's the 2nd wife's 1st husband) I need someone like that in my database to show step children to my relatives. I think that covers it. I have been thinking since my Harris and Miller lines merge so much that I might just make them all Harris' and then make codes based on my children's 4 grandparents last names. Then I can use Legacy's color-coding system on them. Just haven't decided to transfer everything yet. I guess that's the good thing about making up your own rules you can do whatever you like. Let me know if you have any questions. Renee Zamora www.harrisena.com Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Legacy 6.0 Deluxe has 92 features not found in the Standard Edition. Re: [LegacyUG] User ID and AFN
I use the User ID field for the same thing to show my relationship to that person. But I have a different twist. First I use a letter to show what family line it is, then I don't use the X. So my Harris 1st Cousin 2 times Removed is H1C2R. If someone wants a gedcom of that family line all I need to do is do a find and tag all the User ID's starting with H's and I'm all set with no fussing involved. Re: [LegacyUG] Temple Ready
Well the parents are definitely marked deceased because they both have death dates. I also had siblings to the child I was trying to TempleReady and they show the parents names with no problem. I could submit them beautifully. The problem child is also showed deceased because I have a death date on him. I also understand what you mean about having to be very careful how you choose ordinances for the individuals and families. Some options include way more people and ordinances than I want. Sometime I just have to unselect them when I get to the FHC and run TempleReady there. Frustrating, frustrating, frustrating. Yes, new FamilySearch will be an improvement. I live in Utah County so it will be a long time before I see it live here. On a personal note - I'm looking forward to you speaking sometime at the UVPAFUG on GenealogyBank. We just need to know when you will be available and in the area. You can contact me or Don Snow. [LegacyUG] Temple Ready
I was trying to get some names Temple Ready but I am finding the parents missing on the children's names - even though my records clearly show them connected. When I am in the name list for picking who to submit for ordinances under the temple tab the parents names are not showing. Under the family tab they are. Under the LDS tab it shows the parents names but not yet sealed. I want to pick the option to seal the child to their parents but when I try to select that in the Temple tab the parents names are now missing. I am working with Legacy 6 and the latest update. I did a file maintenance and it says everything is ok. This is not happening on every child. For the life of me I cannot figure out what is causing this. I didn't notice anyone reporting this as a bug in the archives. Renee Zamora www.harrisena.com Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Re: [LegacyUG] Another refinement
My solution is to put in the User ID field a code for my relationship to that person. Since my database is now a combination of four separate fields I notate a different starting letter to show what line a person is to me. H3C4R would stand for my Harris family 3rd cousin 4 times removed. When you create web pages of your genealogy in Legacy you can choose to have the User ID show, just check that option under the tab "What". When I submitted my database to Rootsweb. I noticed that the User ID field now comes across as the Reference Number. If you look at the following link: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rzamor1&id=I5157 You will see Moses Harris Reference Number: H6GGF shows he is my 6th great grandfather. I tell people on the top of the page to look for the reference codes and how that shows the relationship to me. Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2007 12:17:37 -0400 Perhaps this has been discussed and I missed it, but I wonder if Legacy has ever considered offering Legacy on-line? By that I mean full use of the program and one's personal data files stored somewhere on-line so that it would be able to be used from any computer at any locataion. It would lessen the possibility of duplicate file corruption by having only one, (the current,) file available all of the time, from anywhere. We would not have to carry laptops into libraries or other research sites. With the current encryption available all files would be very secure and accessible only by the registered owners. Re: [LegacyUG] saving family files
I used to have four separate databases. Then I was finding to many families that would merge together. I still wanted to see what "Family" each person came from, so, I decided to use the "User ID" field to put a code for each family line. Then I put my relationship to the person. H3GGM would stand for Harris 3rd great-great grandmother. H&M2C3R would be Harris & Miller line 2nd cousin 3 times removed. On some lines I have large groups of families that I think are related to me but for now I only have then spottily connected. I will put H-Bentley to show this is my Harris line with the Bentley name study. This coding system has fit my needs perfectly. I have my database up on Rootsweb and look at it while at the libraries or Family History Centers. I can see how someone is related to me and then decide if I want to keep any information on that line or not. This has helped me not go on tangents for people that are not blood related to me. I like to now just put the non-blood related spouses parents information under my notes and tell where you can locate further information on that line. Since my lines are coded in the User ID field if I want to split the lines or just send information on one line to someone I can do a "search" for them. I could search for all the individuals with a user ID that begins with the letter "W" and then tag them. Then I would have all my Weatherwax's to send to someone. This system works for me. Now I strongly suggest people combine their family lines together, but code them first. Then you will never regret your actions. I would say that one person on the list did make a strong point for not combining lines if both husband and wife were working separately on their families. I just don't personally have the luck. [LegacyUG] Relationships Calculator
I just went back and read the thread on the issue of 1/2 relationships not showing up since the last build. (I have build 6.0.0.110) Well I have everyone's relationship coded in my database so I know all the 1/2 relationships that should be showing up. And every single 1/2 relationship is now not being calculated. All other relationships are showing but not the 1/2's. I'm not sure of the setting but I'm NOT talking about showing 1/2 children in the family view. I have the relationship showing above each parents name in the family view. Can't figure out what setting that is. But I can change the setting in Customize Display to Relationship right on the left side of say the father by right clicking so it goes born, chr, died, buried, relshp. Now that relationship calculator isn't identifying 1/2 either. So there is something wrong with the whole relationship calculator since this last build. Please fix this issue ASAP. I really rely on the relationship calculator its part of my whole coding system. [LegacyUG] Deleting Address
I have something that is really bugging me, and I can't figure out how to delete this. I am talking about accidentally adding an address to lets say the burial field. I type in the location and then want to add the cemetery name. I use the little plus sign to add the information from my addresses. Then later I find out that isn't the right information how do I then delete the address from that one record. Without deleting the actual address in my master list. Hence deleting all record to it to every individuals. At least thats what I think it will do, delete the entire record and not just to that use with that one individual. To afraid to experiment. The only way I can seem to get ride of an attached address is to create a duplicate event and then switch it and then get ride of that whole event. Confusing, hope you understand and can enlighten me. That's what the problem was. There are more than 30 days in August so when I set it a month out it wasn't showing up. Thanks for responding and helping me out. [LegacyUG] Family Reunion & Creatable CD
You're just going to love Legacy's next update that should be coming out any day now. They will be offering a scaled down version of Passage Express to make creatable CD within Legacy - FOR FREE! You will be able to send all your photos and legacy database to everyone in your family on this CD. I can't wait for the next update - told about it at BYU's Genealogy Conference last week. Renee Zamora www.harrisena.com - Original Message - From: Lucy McDonald Shore To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Tuesday, August 08, 2006 1:51 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] Family Reunion I'm a little :-) tardy in thanking all the people who gave me really great tips on having a successful family reunion. The past weeks have been busy from dawn til dusk getting ready for the event putting your suggestions to work. This was a reunion marking the centennial of the family farm which was started in 1906 by my grandparents from France. We had family from everywhere, including France, Tahiti and French Guyana. A success in every respect!Someone had suggested having photos available that would be of interest to the audience -- this was something I had already been working on and had developed a slide show with around 340 identified photos. It was very popular and was run several times over the two days. It was so popular, in fact, that many of the people wanted copies-- which I will provide, together with the photos taken at the occasion itself.Someone had also suggested box charts showing some generations. This was a really good suggestions -- in fact, when I arrived at the location, one of our French guests had already set up his box charts!! That's OK because my information was more up-to-date than his and we will now be sharing info by e-mail. I notice a great deal of interest in these charts also and many family members filled in blank spots. In fact, some members also wanted copies of the box charts!I also created a large (36 ins. x 36 ins.) coloured wheel chart showing the ancestral lineage from my uncle (the only remaining of his generation), son of the grandparents who immigrated. In some instances there was information on fully 10 generations. People were fascinated and several would like the file so that they can have their own copy.I did not have time to have family group sheets available but I'm quite pleased with the information I was able to get without that.I did bring my laptop but it was used primarily for the slide shows so my Legacy program saw very little activity. Someone also suggested that I record new information on The Pocket Genealogist -- but I cannot use this program on my Palm Pilot (I only discovered that after I bought it!).We did have a digital recorder but did not use it. There were different activities and it was impossible to be everywhere at the same time...and one had to visit with the guests (about 100 in all) and take photos! All in all, the event was a great success from every point of view -- it was an opportunity to renew old ties and to forge new ones as well. And thank you to all who made really valuable suggestions.Lucy Legacy User Group guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.aspTo find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/For online technical support, please visit http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.aspTo unsubscribe please visit: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp Legacy User Group guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp To find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ For online technical support, please visit http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe please visit: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

Oh, now I see, I can just click on the person's source button and scroll down to Father Rel: or Mother Rel: and add the source. That is pretty simple to use. Re: [LegacyUG] Sources for parents
Coolness, I knew there had to be a way to source that. Makes me think now I should have been doing that on all my people. Just not an "Event" you think of documenting. Kind of hard to get to also. Maybe thats something Legacy could work on for us.
