Re: [LegacyUG] Browse for lost picture file
It would be a nice feature if Legacy could open a larger window and also open the directory that you have entered as the location for the Picture Files or any of the other media locations. Since Legacy does know to go to the directory you entered to search itself for your file, it seems logical that the window it opens be the directory you have entered. Re: [LegacyUG] Browse for lost picture file
Don, Telling Legacy to find the file could be risky if filename is too simple such as "Vol3_Page8" or "Christmas2006" when the filename exists several places in file tree. I've made that mistake. If rename a file or group of files that are then reported missing for mutiple citations I have found it to be relately easy to correct using "Search and Replace" in MS Access or ltools. If you have either let us know if you want to try fixing it outside of Legacy. -- Richard Van Wasshnova http://www.gencircles.com/users/vanwasshnova http://gw.geneanet.org/vanwasshnova On Thu, May 7, 2009 at 11:25 PM, Don Jaggi wrote: > What I am referring to is when I go to a file or picture in my data base > that legacy cannot find because I changed it. Re: [LegacyUG] Browse for lost picture file
Ron - I probably should clarify...several times I have chosen within my photo editor to work on and then rename images deleting the original image which is the one legacy is linked to. In the process I have created new folders and placed the images there. Now logically since legacy has never dealt with those file folders and Legacy is not opened when i do this - there is no way it should find the image. It has not always worked but more times than I care to admit, when i have opened legacy - chosen the person the image should be linked to, in order to relink it - it's already linked. I asked about this about a year ago - and several others on the list also said they had the same thing happen to them. Logically it should not happen but in reality it has happened. However, I would hate to rely on it. As I say - your mileage may vary. Right now I like mine. Jackie ronald ferguson wrote: Jackie, I rather suspect that depends on what one means by the link with Legacy being correct. Re: [LegacyUG] Browse for lost picture file
The only way any application knows how to find a file is by its file name, which includes tha pathway to get there. If you save a WORD document under one name, you cannot find it by using another name. If you change the name of the WORD file, you cannot find it under the old name, unless you have saved it as a new file under the new name, at which point, you have two WORD documents. If you do change a file name, an application has no way to find that file under the old name unless you two copies of the file - under the new and the old names. And even then, it is finding it only because you still have a file with the old name. Change away, but you have to let Legacy know the new name unless you have kept a copy under the old name. No matter what you have specified in Options>Customize>Locations>Picture Files, you will still get that window when Legacy cannot find your file.
