Hi Jane,

Thank you, and thanks to everyone who responded - the LUG is just great!

I can certainly live with typing something in the Find box to force
the list to display. It's nice to know I'm not the only one seeing
squirrelly grid behavior.

Thanks again!

Margaret,
After that, Jennie suggested I delete a blank line. An excellent suggestion
had I followed it. Previously, I could not delete the blank category. This
time, to my surprise, I actually deleted that category with a blank. That
did the trick though to bring the entire category list on the screen. My
suggestion is just to enter any letter, number or space (bar) in the find
field to pull up your list, and live with that. My Child status is working
just fine, even though I erroneously deleted the blank category. I have a
backup just before doing that, so I could restore, but I don't know if a
restore would change those dates entered and modified that I so love in the
Family View. (right click on the date in the lower right corner). I don't
know if a restore would restore my settings to the previous Master list
with my 'blank' category. I'll play with that on a 'play file' I created.
(yet another excellent tip from this LUG.)

That sounds as though you have a lot of blank lines at the top of the
list, for some reason. Try clicking on one of the empty lines and then
click on Options>Delete. You should be able to delete them all except
one, which is used by Legacy as a blank record for when no Status is
selected.

Hi Margaret
As I don't worry about initial entry and modification dates within the file,
Sherry's solution fixed my problem. I suggest that you contact her to see if
you can retain these dates somehow.
I had your problem of the correct field being highlighted in the Child
Status window but with no text for a child that had been entered as a twin.

Hi Judy,

I exported to a new family file and that works great for the Master
List issue, but exporting caused all initial entry and modification
dates within the file to be set to today's date, and I really don't
want to lose that trail.

If I right-click a child in Family View that has a child status of
"Twin" and then click the down-arrow on the Child Status drop-down box
for that Twin, the Master Child Status List is displayed. The list is
still empty, but this time the grid is displayed, albeit with no data.
If I click on one of the blank entries, I get the following error
message:

"True DBGrid 6 Data access error ".

What to do when Grids go bad? I remember in an earlier release of
Clooz 2.0, data disappearing from the grid was a common problem; I
believe restarting Clooz fixed it. I've cold started my PC, and it
doesn't help.

Thanks,
Margaret

Great! I don't know why resetting them in the Master List Cleanup didn't
help but at least you have them back now! I tested it a couple of times by
deleting default Child Statuses and they were always replaced.

Margaret,
I have Legacy 6 Deluxe.
I found categories in the Child Status Master List for the Sample file and
in a Play file I created, but found nothing in my personal family file.
That is, until I scrolled down & up on the gray scroll bar. Then, I found
12 categories. A close & reopen gives me a blank screen again, until I
scroll again. Go figure. Regards, Jane Tripp

2008-08-23 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
My Child Status list has three default entries: None, Stillborn, Twin. I
also have an "Add" button. But, how is it you've been able to define a
status for a child? When I right-click on the children in Family View, and
choose Children's Settings, then go to add a status to a child, it brings up
the Master Child Status List (the same one you say is empty.) The only way I
could add a status to a child is to access the Master Child Status List. I
don't see how you've been able to add a status to a child when you have an
empty Master Child Status List.

Re: [LegacyUG] Child Status Master List - Empty

2008-08-23 Thread Markie Flint Blackmon
Hi Dennis,

I've just done a cold reboot and the problem is still there.

I created a new test family file from scratch, and the default entries
appear as they should. I then imported the Child Status entries from
my family file into the new test file, and that worked properly too.
But when I go back to my family file, the Child Status screen is still
blank.

There must be something wrong with my file somewhere, since the new
file works, but since tblCS has the entries, I'm stumped.

As Mike said, No. But maybe as a work around:
Search (icon) / Detailed Search (tab) /
Look for "Individual"; Where to look "Child Status"; How to "Equal to";
What to look for "twin" or whatever /
Create list (button on bottom) /
Options (button on bottom) / Advanced Tagging /

Pick a tag. Now you can add that tag to display in Index View.

I don't believe so. If there was, you'd be able to click on Options in
the top right corner, then select Customise Columns. Then, selecting an
empty column, click on the '...' button to be able to select the Child
Status. Since it doesn't appear in the list, you can't.

Hi Cathy,

Your suggestion sounded like it might work. I've already moved on with my
Legacy.fdb export/import file but I went back to the old, (yesterday),
corrupt file and tried importing CS defaults and also from repaired file and
neither worked.

  (See more reply interspersed below)

Hi Richard,

You could try resetting the Child Status List by importing the Defaults
When in the Master Child status list
Options button
Import
tick Child Status and then the Import Defaults button.
I would think that would have the same effect as exporting to a new family
file - which isn't something to do lightly as you lose created and modifed
date data, imported tags are attached to everyone rather than those who
you really have imported etc.

Please tell me how to see "imported tags". I added 5 Individuals since last
import, (last one is FRANKLIN STEIN ;-) ). I can see created date and
modified date, mostly yesterday just a few today.

I had to reset ancestor colors, set direct line and set relationships and
lost TO-DO list. The majority would alredy show as imported anyway even
though I entered myself in another program.

If you are exporting your whole file, you don't have to create a new
family file first. You just choose in the File - Export to Legacy file to
export all records.

That is how I did it.

Check/Repair includes compress Family File as the final step so your
Family File is often smaller after doing a Check/Repair.

Cathy

Thanks for the suggestions.

Richard,

This sounds like an error in your file. I cannot check it as I already have
"twin" in my list for child status but I have no blank lines and at present
none of the entries are tagged. If I highlight "twins" and click "show list"
then it correctly lists all the identified twins in my files and gives me
the options of tagging, untagging those on the list and untagging all
entries in my files.

If yours isn't working this way you could try File Maintenance>Check Repair.

When I rt click in children area of a family, then select "Children
setting" from the drop down menu I get the usual pop-up window.
If I then select the down arrow next to "Relationship to Father, (or
Mother" I get list of 11 possible selections starting with Adopted. OK so
far.
If I select the down arrow next to "Child status" I get a blank list. If I
type in "t" in the box Legacy offers autocomplete "triplet". If I type in
"tw" in the box Legacy offers autocomplete "twin" which if I accept, then
again click down arrow I again see a blank list but now containing several
lines plus a Tag column in which all blank selections are tagged. If I
click on "Show list" it shows me all the twins in my db.
Would appreciate if someone could verify if this is a new bug or something

Our children were released for adoption to us. Not
great but better IMHO.

Re: [LegacyUG] Child Status of adopted out child

2007-01-30 Thread Sara Binkley Tarpley

"Placed for adoption" sounds better to me. I am an adoptive mother; the
adoption community does not like "given up" and would probably not like
either "placed for adoption" or "adopted out." The preferred wording is
very cumbersome, something like "made an adoption plan for the child," and I
don't know of any adjective or noun that would encompass that.

I believe "adopted out" would be the equivalent of
"giving up for adoption".

RE: [LegacyUG] Child Status of adopted out child

2007-01-29 Thread ronald ferguson

Etta,

It is perfectly possible for a child to have two sets of parents, one pair
of which can be set to adoptive.

On the Family View page click on the parents icon and either add new parents
or link to existing. I am not sure whether adopted is an existing
relationship, if not just add it (click the blue down arrow).

This is of particular interest to me as I have a 1st cousin who was adopted
out to another family, and then he started looking for his birth parents.
I knew who he was connected to, and reunited him with his family. Mutual
happiness all around, once my aunt accepted the fact her son wasn't going
to harrange or hate her. She began accepting and filling in missing
details, but of course the cousin had to approach very slowly and gently
and in a non-threatening way.

Now, how would I add this child? He wasn't raised by his birth parents,
and in fact loves his adoptive family very much. Would I give him a
special event and detail some of it? My aunt had just lost a toddler and
was in a very frail state, emotionally and physically.

What he is saying is go to
View
Master Lists
Child Status
Add
type 'Stillborn Twin'
without ' '
press Enter
It allows up to 50 characters, so you could include
multiple worded status descriptions in the list. The
program doesn't care how many you create.
I hope this clarifies.

Re: [LegacyUG] Child Status of adopted out child

2007-01-29 Thread Heather Stovold

Well, what I would do is add him in to the family, as a biological child -
and then also add his adoptive parents, and set the child status in there as
adopted.

I might add a new child status - something like adopted out, or something,
to make it more clear on printouts where people might not see the adopted
parents mentioned and I'd put in a bunch of notes.

That is what I would do - but I'm sure there are many answers!

[LegacyUG] Child Status of adopted out child

2007-01-29 Thread Etta Cooper
This is of particular interest to me as I have a 1st cousin who was adopted
out to another family, and then he started looking for his birth parents. I
knew who he was connected to, and reunited him with his family. Mutual
happiness all around, once my aunt accepted the fact her son wasn't going to
harrange or hate her. She began accepting and filling in missing details,
but of course the cousin had to approach very slowly and gently and in a
non-threatening way.

Now, how would I add this child? He wasn't raised by his birth parents, and
in fact loves his adoptive family very much. Would I give him a special
event and detail some of it? My aunt had just lost a toddler and was in a
very frail state, emotionally and physically.

What he is saying is go to

Add
type 'Stillborn Twin'

It allows up to 50 characters, so you could include
multiple worded status descriptions in the list. The
program doesn't care how many you create.
I hope this clarifies.

Which version of Legacy are you using? I think the reduced list of
pre-loaded child statuses occurred after relationship to each parent boxes
were added to the programme. Earlier versions may not have that feature.

Some of those were pre-loaded with the program. I

Why do we need to bother Support? Just create a new "double" or even
"triple" child status. Here is my list and I can add more as
required. These descriptions are for my own use, as I never use or

RE: [LegacyUG] Child Status

2007-01-29 Thread Cathy

Hi Jane,
You can't really select more than one status though you can highlight
more than one in the selection window.

The database only has a place for 1 child status.

Although you could highlight two, when you return to check what has
been selected, only one is really selected.

I don't see the problem with creating more child status categories
with the desired combinations.

If you could assign two or more, the cry would go up to display two or more.

Well you can do that now if you create your own combinations - why
complicate matters?

Hi Jenny
I'm not clear about what you are trying to do. If you want give a child two
or more status 'labels', simply combine them as a new status and use that,
eg "stillborn twin". The new term is added to the search engine, so if you
want to search for all children with that status, you can find them.

The only caveat is Gedcom -check to see how it handles the new status if you
intend transferring your files to other's.

Legacy gives three options for Child Status - None, Stillborn and
Twin. It is quite possible for a child to be both Stillborn and Twin
(or any other multiple, which could be added to the list) but it
doesn't seem to be possible to indicate more than one status.

The Child Status List is one of the Master Lists. Therefore, YOU can
press the Add button to create what you want.

Yes, I know that, which is why I said "or any other multiple, which
could be added to the list."

What I'm saying is that you can't have 2 Statuses (stati?) selected at
the same time.
