And, if I'm entering the place for -- say 1700 would I put Nutfield, ,

 work for that that place/time?

Not England, either New England, British North America or British
North America There is also a New England, Australia, so just New
England can be ambiguous. You could also use the Colony name, an
example is New Haven Colony which merged with Connecticut in the 1660s
and became New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut Colony, British North
America.

Of course, I don't always do it that way, but I think that would be
more historically correct. That does not work with the Geo Locator
database.

RE: [LegacyUG] Geo Location Database - Updates

2009-09-16 Thread Sherry/Support
Legacy v7 introduced mapping locations. I miswrote when I said Live
Mapping - I meant Virtural Earth, now known as Bing. You have to be
connected to the internet to use it and I suppose it is live in the sense
that Legacy goes to the VE/Bing website and shows their map and
geo-coordinates.

It's much more accurate than Geo Location Database, however, it doesn't show
counties like Geo does. Caveat - the locations in Geo and Bing are all
current and there is no historical information. Well, occasionally I spot
something that no longer exists but that's a rarity.

Click on the Mapping icon on the main toolbar to create a map for the
current individual or go into the Master Location List to map specific
locations.

Full details are in the Legacy Help file.

RE: [LegacyUG] Geo Location Database - Updates

2009-09-16 Thread Brian Beddor
Hi Sherry,
Thanks for explaining.

I have a question on using the Geo Location feature. I understand when
entering in the Place/location we should always allow for 4 spots and
separate each with a comma -- so in the USA it would be: city, county,
state, country. I also understand that if we don't know one of the
fields that we leave it blank but still put in the comma for a place
holder. Then we can click on the little blue earth icon and it will do
a search for the location and put in the latitude and longitude.

My question is how does that work when the name of a location changes
over time?
Let's take the town of Derry, Rockingham, New Hampshire, USA. If I have
an event that happens today and I put this in the place/location and hit
the Geo Location then it works beautifully giving me the latitude and
longitude. And, if I don't know the name of the county, after hitting
the Geo Location icon it will do a search and tell me the county is
Rockingham.

However, the town wasn't always called Derry -- it used to be
Londonderry. And before it was Londonderry it was Nutfield. It
was in 1722 that the name was changed from Nutfield to Londonderry. And
at that time there was no United States -- and the county wasn't
Rockingham. It wasn't until 1769 that there was the county of
Rockingham.

I also know that we should record place names as they were at that time.
So, what should I be putting in the place location for the different
times?
And, if I'm entering the place for -- say 1700 would I put Nutfield, ,

I think Sherry has gone home, so I will help tonight. What we must do is use
the current name for the location, capture the L/L, then in a persons input
screen, change the location name to what it was at a given time. Then the L/L
will be attached to two same/different places (sic).  If you change it in the
master list the change is universal. I have some places with over six different
names  (same L/L).

When you go to the Master Location List and select a location, you can
Geo-code that location. If you're in the Map of Places for... window, click
on the Resolve button to bring up the Master Location List where you can
code the location.

The Geo-code feature in the Master Location List codes according to what
Bing (was Virtual Earth) has on file and doesn't use the Geo Location
Database.

Actually, with Jay's clarification I think it is on topic. Speaking as a
neutral bystander (I don't use Legacy's Geo database), if all Jay was
doing was pointing out that, in the absence of Legacy updating their
database (beats me if they do or don't), there is an alternate source
for the same kind of data, then I think it is entirely appropriate.

In addition, I would suggest that anyone who feels that a subject *is*
off-topic should take it up with the list administrator off-list.

FYI. Legacy's Geo Database is password protected. The casual programmer
cannot even see it's content, much less update it. And the .rdb files
that you download to update Legacy's Geo Database are binary files of
unknown (except to the Legacy programmers) structure.

being of no value and having nothing to do with Legacy. My entire

I know my posts are sometimes short and may sound curt but if you read
my post again you will see there was nothing harsh included or intended.
And I still invite the OP to explain how that link can be used with
Legacy or even be useful without spending money at the link's site. I
may have missed something in the translation and if so would welcome
that information. I do not believe, however, that that information is

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Location Database - Updates

2009-08-08 Thread 1familytree

Gene,

I was going to let all this pass, but I will refrain from typing what I am
thinking.

I guess my original post was not as explanatory as it should have been.

I use the data from the file I receive as a separate reference database when
locations cannot be found within the Geo-database incorporated into Legacy.

AGAIN, I use it as a separate reference database.

And if you are not comfortable with using database software, this is
probably not a viable option for you. But I often see listers referring to
manipulating their data in Access, so I would guess those people would find
this option as a benefit.

I am sure that there is a way to update the actual Geo-Code file in Legacy,
but I am not a coder or programmer and don't want to do anything that might
effect proper operation of my Legacy software.

You say that you were rewarded with more than 33MB of useless text files,
if so, you did not follow the directions properly.

To use the link I provided for an update to the listing of the Geo-Database
here are the steps I followed;

Go to http://www.geodatasource.com/cities-free.html

Click on download full version, make sure you are on the FREE page titled,
GeoDataSourceT World Cities Database Free Edition
If you are already a registered user of their site, log in and you will be
directed to the download page.

If you are not a registered user, you must register. There is NO Charge.
After you register you will receive an email confirming your account is
active and then log in and go to the download page.
You can also go to the my account page and at the bottom of your page will
show you what files you are entitled to, in my case, only 1
GeoDataSource-Cities-Free.Text.zip

Download the FREE edition zipped file.

You can then import that file into any database management product. To quote
from their site;
SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL or other database software
application capable of importing 2,248,843 records from a standard
tab-delimited ASCII text file and sufficient disk space to import the
database

Once you have imported the records into a database, you can use the search
function to find cities.

I do not know how old the Legacy version 7 Geo-Code database is, but in
about half of the instances where I do not find a city in Legacy, I find
them in GeoDataSource. The other half are usually misspelled or names that
no longer exist.

I was merely pointing out as a reply to a comment that the Legacy database
has never been updated that this is what I use.

GeoSourceData updates their downloadable free list every month.

I have NO affiliation with that company nor any connection to the product.

I hope that this can be of great help to those Legacy users who need a more
current reference lookup that what Legacy provides.

(Ron, Thank you for comment I strongly suspect that Jay
misunderstood the context of my response to the OP and was merely trying to
suggest somewhere were updated lists are available.

That was exactly the intention.)
