Make those notes private. There are different 'flavors' of privacy. Check out
the varieties (in help).

Hi Kim,

Have you tried using the privacy brackets? Anything you [[put inside
double square brackets like this]] is regarded as private by Legacy.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kim Austin wrote
Does anyone know how to exclude the event notes on the family group

In the options on the family group record report, there is include
events for husband and wife, etc but I can't seem to exclude the notes.

I just would like to show the events, such as, He or she appeared in
the 1880 census and not include all the other people that I listed in
the notes section from the same census.

Aaaagh! A little while ago I started changing the way I enter Census
information and have already worked my way through probably several
*thousand* entries making the alterations, happy in the "knowledge" (ha!
ha!) that I would be able to exclude the Event Notes (which are very
important to me but incredibly boring for others, not to mention
paper-consuming.)

I have just tried adding the [[Privacy Brackets]] to an Event Sentence,
and it does work. Thank goodness for that or I think I would have been
reduced to a screaming wreck in the last few minutes. It won't take
*too* long to go through all the Event Sentences which I need to change.
(In case anyone is not clear about how to do this, the Census needs to
be written as, for example, [HeShe] appeared on the [Desc] census
[onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [[[Notes]]].

However, I think it would be very satisfactory if one could opt to
exclude Event Notes from Reports as one can other types of Notes and I
will submit this as a New Feature suggestion.

Yes! I just ticked both Print [[Private]] Notes and Remove [[ ]] and
previewed an FGR and the Event Notes printed as you would expect.

I have, however, submitted a suggestion that Event be included with
various sort of Notes on the Report Options>Include tab.

Enhancements are however, suggestions for changes that someone feels

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Notes in Family Group Record Report

2009-07-17 Thread Paula Ryburn

Kim,
Please don't get mad, but I've been dying to ask why you have entered other
people's names in the Event Notes for this individual? Are they the other
members of the family listing? All related to this individual? Or unrelated,
members of the household, too? Are you entering all their data?

The main reports I use are the book reports, so I write the Event Notes how I
would like to see them there. For example, "She was 8 years old, living with
her parents and 5 siblings." Or maybe use her name, especially if it was
spelled differently in the census listing. And for this reason, I don't
envision not wanting the Notes to print.

Based on your desire to not print the Notes, I'm envisioning you entering all
the data from the census record here--and on each individual's own Event--which
I would also NOT want to print.

Thanks,

I hope you have been successful in finding a way to turn off (and on) the

If you don't mind my asking, what are you entering in the Event Notes? All the

Where do others enter this data?

Jerri,

I put the raw information in the Event Notes. Others may choose to put it in
Text of Source, but I want information about the person/family in chronological
order so I can analyze it. Putting it in the Source information (or elsewhere,
like General Notes) doesn't do that at all, or as well, IMO.

You could also put the information in *both* places and not print the
one you don't want. I got this idea from Geoff Rasmussen.

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Notes in Family Group Record Report

2009-07-20 Thread Jenny M Benson

Jerri Grimley wrote
I also enter all the individuals on a census as I find it a quick way
to see the group dynamics of the family at a point in time.

Where do others enter this data?

I enter all the information about a particular individual in a Census in
the Description field for the Census Event and then list the full
household and other notes (such as, "John's brother was living next
door") in the Notes field.

Because the Description is the only thing which changes each time, it
does not take long to enter Census information for everyone.

As the Description gives *all* the Census information and I include the
full address in the Location, I do not usually have separate Occupation
or Address Events for anyone unless I have information which is
different to what is in the Censuses.

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Notes in Family Group Record Report

2009-07-21 Thread Kim Austin
Thanks to all that tried to help.

I use to put the family information from a census record in my source but
changed the way I did it when I saw a Legacy training CD. It was
demonstrated that you put the family information from the census in events
notes. I thought it was a great way to see all infor. quickly. The
downfall - I didn't realize at the time that the notes will appear on a
family group sheet report, when I just want to see the event on the group
sheet.

Brian the other suggestion I made years ago was also from an idea that I got
from Legacy home page (Legacy news). Using the MRIN number to file. My
suggestion was to separate the RIN/MRIN numbers on report options. When
using this method of filing, you do not use the RIN number. So wouldn't it
make since to only show the MRIN on reports. All the other numbers (RIN) on
the reports are too confusing for someone who is looking at them that does
not know much about genealogy.

I love the ideas that we receive from Legacy but than when we found out that
things don't work as quite as well as we thought they would. I did get the
impression from several people that I talked too over the *years* (cruise,
shows, internet) that the MRIN would be a great idea and easy to do.

Thanks,
Kim

The printing of RINSs in reports is optional, and I would strongly resist any

For Pedigree Webpages they are also the file names for the individuals.

I think the point Kim was making is that you can't print MRINs on reports
without also printing RINs. Like Kim I file all my papers by marriage and
therefore use MRIN as a reference. Having RINs appearing everywhere then
becomes an un-necessary distraction for anyone not using individual
