I've added a 'disproven birth' event, in which I put the dates which I
know is false, and source it with the correct source. In that way I have a
research record. I must add that I don't print out events in reports, but
use them as basis for the Notes section where I put everything I want to

And even if it WAS done poorly, how many other family members will have
enough genealogical research savvy to pick up on that, rather than just
assume she hadn't discovered the more accurate information *yet*? Certainly
I have changed dates and places in my database as more information became

2007-06-21 Thread Jan Roberts
I just wonder why you would delete the source referencing the person who
gave you the information. Why not just add the additional source where you
found the same information - to my mind that would do two things - still
acknowledge the person who gave you the info in the first place, at the same
time giving added strength to the validity of the information because it
would show that two sources say the same thing.

I agree with all that Dermot says. I do the same thing, too. And then when I

find the information for myself, I deleted the source as the person that
gave me the information and enter the source where I found the information;
i.e., census records, Social Security Death Index, Family History Center
microfilms, etc. At least I have a starting point with people and dates with

the information that's been given me.

What I'm doing (and I'm not saying this is right for you, but it is
for me) is I've decided to record these details, all with the source
as this gentleman. Then, when I get a chance (that may be some
time!!) I'll research each one myself, and add whatever other sources
 I find.

It's fine to acknowledge the person that originally gave me the information;
however, sometimes she gives me month and year or just year of death and
then when I look at the SSDI I find the full date. So if I leave the source
citing my cousin's information and also the SSDI source, won't that appear
that the full date was given to me by my cousin when in fact she only gave
me a partial date? That's why I delete her as a source and use the source
where I got complete information. Same goes for incorrect information from
my cousin. Since she gave me no source for where she got the death date and
SSDI has a different date which I believe to be the correct one, to keep her
as a source for the SSDI date would be inconsistent with the information she
gave me. Lots of angles here.

In that case I would enter the correct date in the Individual screen, and
make a note that *my cousin* had originally provided such and such as the
birth date. That date would no longer need a source, because it wouldn't
exist in my database any more - but I would still want to remember that
there had been an alternative date provided by whoever. In regards to the
partial versus full date, I would show in Detail Text that *my cousin*
provided 1876 as the birth year, and in Detail Text for the full date source
I would show 1/3/1876. That way it would be obvious which part of the date
each source is referenced to.

Re: [LegacyUG] Not sure what to do. Can U help

2007-06-21 Thread marilyn E B

I hope this thread continues as many questions are being answered concerning
information being passed on from others.

I recently purchased a book by a distant cousin it covers over 7000
individuals that
may have descended from the original member in Virginia Colony in
1690. I am trying to enter all these in a separate file. I have found
mistakes and by creating a separate
file, I think it will be easier to use the file to correct, delete,
and add to; than entering them
in my personal file.

About the only documentation he has included is references to some
census records.
I may be able to get more records from him but I hate to start
questioning what he has written. He has been working on this for
twenty years and does say he has many records. But I love searching so
I am working on my own at this point.

Thank you all for the suggestions and help.

First, the most important thing is to source all the data with the most
accurate source that can be found.

Second, it's your database, so source it the way that seems most logical to
you. It is NOT necessary to track the method that was used to find a given
source, if you don't feel comfortable with it.

Last, the experts may be more knowlegeable about a given subject, but that
doesn't mean they are correct.

Re: [LegacyUG] Not sure what to do. Can U help

2007-06-21 Thread Karl Plenge
One more two cents on this topic:

I have found that fairly often I get conflicting information - birthdates
that are one day or one year apart, spelling of names that are close but
don't match exactly, etc - and can't call one any more authoritative than
the other, such as two family trees done by different members of the family.

When I first started doing this, I wasn't careful to source everything, and
then later I would be wondering, Where did I get that? So I now record
every source from which I get a piece of information, and in the Detail I
put the information exactly as it came from that source. When I get an
authoritative source, such as the person's own signature in the case of not
knowing exactly how to spell the name, I also record that, and put the
corrected data in the Detail. But I leave the old sources listed with the
information as it came from them, because I have found it helpful later on
to have an audit trail of how I got to where I am now.

That's the beauty of Legacy. There is no right or wrong way. It is
every user's personal choice how to do things.

I can understand your feelings that you wouldn't want your family to
read their story that includes alternate dates. I believe that the
alternate date events can be flagged just like any other event as a
private event. This would prevent them from appearing on reports,
narratives, web pages, etc. I have flagged Social Security Number event
that way so that someone's SSN is not displayed.

These are all good suggestions, but for me they mean a lot of dates,
many of
them incorrect, and wouldn't sourcing my cousin for an incorrect date
point
out how poorly she did her research?

What works for me is dates I've researched, sourced by wherever I got
that
date. For my family reading their family story, why would they want to
read
dates and alternate dates, not knowing because they aren't genealogists
as
we are that the alternative date is, IMHO, incorrect, thanks to my

I guess there is no correct or incorrect way.

Once you find the correct date, you can move the original date
received
from your cousin to the Alt. Birth/Alt. Death event and retain your
cousin as the source for that event. This maintains the history of
your
 research.

Also, if you already have a Legacy database where this family would
be
entered, my suggestion would be to enter it into a separate database
and
as you evaluate each person, move them into your database.

RE: [LegacyUG] Not sure what to do. Can U help

2007-06-21 Thread Linda Altman
Everyone:

There have been a lot of really good suggestions on how to handle inaccurate
data and how to source it. As a professional genealogist (I research for
others for a fee), this is how I handle the situation. I always keep the all
of the data and the source it came from. However, when better information is
discovered, I replace the inaccurate information with the accurate
information. In my notes I write up a proof summary which entails comparing
the old information with the new and pretty much building a case for why the
new information is more likely to be accurate than the old.

For example; right now I am working for a client and her ancestor's date and
place of birth is part of the scope of research. I have several documents
that offer conflicting places of birth, however they all list her birth date
as the same. For now I accept the date of birth as correct, but I am more
inclined to accept the place of birth on a document that shows her
birthplace in the same county and state as her siblings, and not what was
recorded on the death certificate. When more information about her birth is
obtained, I may change what I believe to be most accurate. By keeping these
proofs, I can follow my reasoning and make adjustments when necessary.

2007-06-21 Thread Linda Altman
Ruth and all;
The SSDI is not an accurate source for birth dates. They get this
information from the funeral home / death certificate. If you want a more
complete record for a person than what the SSDI includes, write in for the
person's SS-5 form from the Social Security Administration. Don't both with
the numident record, it only contains the same data as the SSDI, get the
full copy of the SS-5 form. The fee is $27.00, but this is the form that the
person filled out in order to get a Social Security Card. Many were filled
out in the late 1930's and it is a wonderful source for addresses,
employers, birth dates, places of birth, and parent's names (although maiden
names tend to contain errors). The SS-5 will not contain any death
information as it was created while the person was alive.

Re: [LegacyUG] Not sure what to do. Can U help

2007-06-20 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Kim,

What I would do in your situation is sit down and type in the details
from your cousin's data that you want to record in your database. That
might end up being all 370 people that he's recorded - that's fine, and
totally your choice.

As you enter the data, record your source as your cousin's data so when
you look at it in five year's time you'll not have to remember how you
found out about that little piece of information. You can set up the
Source Clipboard so that you can copy the same source to each data item
as you go with one click - read the Help on this and ask any questions
here so we can clarify if necessary (I'm trying to keep this simple!
:-) Make sure you attach the source for each *item* for each *person*
as you go - ie, the name, their birth, their christening/baptism, their
death are all individual items that need to be sourced when you enter
data in those fields.

If your cousin has recorded his sources, you can add those as well if
you like - or you can just leave your source as your cousin so you know
to refer back to the information he's given you if want to.

You do not need legal certificates to enter data into Legacy. You can
even enter family rumours and legends! The sources you enter will
identify where your information came from, and therefore how reliable it
might be. If you have certificates, enter the data from them and
against those items include the source information that leads you to
that certificate. There is more than one way to do this, so you'll
probably experiment a little before settling on your preferred method.
I started out adding a Master Source for each individual certificate,
but now I have a Master Source for each type (eg, English birth, New
Zealand birth, Scottish death, and so on) and enter the information that
identifies which particular certificate/registration in the detail field.

How generous of your cousin to hand over his data like that! It's a
great start to your own research, and especially for a name like JONES.
:-) It has taken me about two years to pass the 1,000 individuals mark
in my Legacy database, and a lot of that has been garnered from distant
cousins - and a fair amount is simply the lines between me and those
cousins so I can see how we're related.

Keep asking questions here about recording your data in Legacy, and
we'll be here to help you find the answers. I'm not the most
knowledgeable person on this list and there are many others who have
great abilities to explain the intricacies and to work out solutions to
particular problems, so there is someone here to help you with pretty
much anything you can throw at us about Legacy. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

Hello to All,
OK here I go I hope I dont sound stupid...The question is this my 1st Cousin
has been doing our Jones/Martin side of the family for many, many years
which I just found out. He was very kind in sending me the hand written
tree. He, from what I can gather has not used any sort of program except
maybe Excel, but dont quote me. I never ever knew there were so many of us,
but in saying that what do I do now? Do I enter them all as is written or
do I research each and every one individually/family. He has only sent me
some facts like date of birth, marrige date, date of death if they had
children or not, basic facts with a few pictures 5 in all but 370 people
all up.and all of them are apparantly related to me. Do I need marrage
certificates and death and so on to put them in Legacy? or can I just add
the whole lot as is? Because I'm very new to Legacy and the whole genealogy
thing I'm I bit worried that I will do all that adding and then really
should not have done and have to undo all that work. So can someone please
help? Thanks Kim

It's entirely up to you how accurate you wish to be. If you want to
take your cousin's word for it and blindly accept that all his
information is correct, then just enter all the data you have been given
into Legacy.

However, if you want to adopt a professional approach and want to be
sure that any data you share with other people is accurate, you should
check all his sources or do the initial research yourself if he doesn't
give sources.

Of course, this is going to take a long time and it will inevitably cost
you money. But genealogy is like all hobbies - it *does* cost you
something to enjoy yourself! In the meantime, there is no reason why
you shouldn't enter all your cousin's data into Legacy and either leave
the Sources blank or put your cousin's details in as the Source.
Gradually over time you can add to or replace the Sources with the
results of your own research.

As a general rule, be wary of accepting anyone word as gospel truth.
And don't believe that something must be true - a person's birthdate,
for example - because the same information appears on numerous websites.
People are always sharing data (and a few help themselves without
permission) and repeating what they were told and by no means everyone
is careful about doing their own research.

Kim,
I'm in the process of working on something exactly the same, a
relative of my mother-in-law has a handwritten tree, with next to no
sources written on it, basically just names and dates but a few
hundred people listed.
What I'm doing (and I'm not saying this is right for you, but it is
for me) is I've decided to record these details, all with the source
as this gentleman. Then, when I get a chance (that may be some
time!!) I'll research each one myself, and add whatever other sources
I find.
Hope this helps, and good luck,

Dermot.

RE: [LegacyUG] Not sure what to do. Can U help

2007-06-20 Thread William Anderson
Just adding my two pence worth. I use an unspecified event to hold the name of
my original unverified source and that is never changed. As I source each event,
I note the verified source information against each event.

I've never had a case of two unverified sources as yet!

Mary - that's a good point. From now on I will leave the original source,
too. Thanks for the tip.

Ruth, I do the same but I don't change the source for the name. I like to
know where I first learned of a relative.

I agree with all that Dermot says. I do the same thing, too. And then when
 I

find the information for myself, I deleted the source as the person that
gave me the information and enter the source where I found the
 information;
i.e., census records, Social Security Death Index, Family History Center
microfilms, etc. At least I have a starting point with people and dates
 with

the information that's been given me.

What I'm doing (and I'm not saying this is right for you, but it is
for me) is I've decided to record these details, all with the source
as this gentleman. Then, when I get a chance (that may be some
time!!) I'll research each one myself, and add whatever other sources
 I find.

Re: [LegacyUG] Not sure what to do. Can U help

2007-06-20 Thread Mitch Mackrory

Kim et al,

You have been given some good information, but one piece is missing IMO.
What I do with something like this (and source citation is the sole reason I
converted from PAF to Legacy) is I record the source as being you cousin,
together with the date you received the data and an image of the
documentation provided if you can do that as well. Then when you cite this
source include the Surety Level. In your case since you aer not sure, I'd
give it a zero or a 1. Zero means you have not yet decided and a one
means you have marginal evidence.

To summarise (note the correct Aussie spelling!) so you have it all in one
place, this is how I see it working:

  1. You should enter all the data exactly as you have it unless you
  have better information on anyone.
  2. Create a unique Master Source for this global series of information
and use the same source citation for each piece of evidence as you record
it. In your source document everything you can about where it came from
including addresses, telephone numbers and email address.
  3. Set the appropriate Surety Level in the citation.
  4. You can set up the first source and citation and then copy the
Source Citation to the clipboard for copying in every time you add
information from this source. Legacy is excellent for both these steps.
  5. Make sure you record the Source Citation against *every *piece of
evidence such as name, birth information, marriage information, parent's
  relationships etc.
  6. I would never delete this Source Citation because it is a record of
where you got the original information. Even as you verify pieces of
information, add new citations with new surety levels. I have been doing
researching for 32 years and every source citation is valuable. You may go
back and change you surety levels later.

I hope that helps.
Cheers, Mitch (ex Southern African, Kiwi living in Colorado)
