minimizing the clipboard or anything else that that gives me the
opportunity to minimize a window in Legacy, it's completely lost.
It's not in the lower left corner, it doesn't go to the taskbar and
hide in the Legacy Logo. At this point I cannot type anything, I
cannot reverse the process, I cannot close Legacy. I can do nothing
else but shut down my pc, using either the start button or using
Ctr./Alt/Del. Then after booting up, I re-open Legacy and try to
remember not to minimize. I have deleted Legacy and reinstalled with
the same response. E-mailing to legacy support Ron suggested that I
delete a User file 2 and thought that might be the problem. I did
that to no avail. I'm not sure if it's a problem with W-7 or with
Legacy but with W-7 using other software, I'm able to minimize and
maximize without a problem. I think I mentioned that I'm using Legacy
 7, latest build.

How have you set up the Windows 7 Taskbar? Have you set the Auto-hide
attribute off? If so, the minimised window is hiding underneath the
 permanently displayed Taskbar.

If that doesn't work - try using the Alt-Tab key to cycle through the
windows of what you have running. I've found that a minimised Source
Clipboard is restored.

[LegacyUG] Trouble with source clipboard

2010-01-31 Thread Jan Roberts
Me again - I'm spending a lot of time at the moment entering data sent by
fellow researchers. I am trying to utilise the source clipboard to make my
job easier. I have saved several sources to the clipboard, so I have a
source relating to the fact that I got the info from a Research Report sent
by the fellow researcher, plus three for BDM Index entries available online
(i.e. a b/c index; m/c index and d/c index). When I switch between one and
the other the three Index sources work perfectly. EXCEPT, I have to
actually load the source I want to use, click SAVE (top right corner, not
SAVE A CLIPBOARD) but then go back into the event and click on the - icon or
the three bar icon again before the source takes.

But the biggest problem is that when I LOAD the Clipboard I created for the
reference to the fellow researcher (after using one of the other sources
from the clipboard) it has lost some information, and gained extra
characters that I never put there - and always the same. The source detail
should contain the name and email address of the researcher, plus the name
of the document that contains the information (e.g. Jan Roberts
[poo...@ozemail.com.au] (31.01.10) family info.doc). It should also have
Today's Date, and nothing in the Text / Comments area. After switching back
to this source clipboard I get the following: Jan Roberts
[poo...@ozemail.com.au] (31.01.10) - i.e. no document name. In Today's Date
I get 0. In the Text / Comments area I get space 0 in the Actual Source
Text box, and the same in the Comments about the Citation box. I have tried
deleting all saved clipboard entries, I have added the source to different
positions in the clipboard - I have tried different names for the source.
Nothing works to make this source clipboard behave as it should. I should
add that I have also previously created another source called Research
Email, which has had much the same information included - except no document
name included with the email address. It worked fine.

I know I have been having a few strange problems with Legacy lately, most of
which have mysteriously righted themselves after I've fired off a LUG call
for help (and to date I've not really experienced a lot of the glitches
other people seem to have) but this has been going on for days now and it is
driving me nuts. Can anyone reproduce my problems. Or is it literally a
glitch in my system for some reason?

Cheers

Jan

I've had this in the past :-) Best way to get around/over it is to go to
the website and download the whole, new package. All 49.2 MB of it!
And run the installation again.

I try to make a point of retaining the packages corresponding to all the
major releases. Then I can revert if necessary.

At the moment, I have Legacy7Setup_7.0.0.109 and Legacy7Setup_7.4.0.6

RE: [LegacyUG] Trouble with source clipboard

2010-01-31 Thread Jan Roberts
I'll give up again! Seems the answer to (some) of my problems is to fire off a
question to LUG - next time I enter data the problem seems to have solved
itself! My recalcitrant source clipboard entry is now retaining all info as
entered, without extra unwanted characters. However, I still have the problem
of having to make sure I 'use' a changed source twice after switching between
source clipboard entries. I can see that once having selected the alternative
source I MIGHT have to actually use it - but once I have selected that new
source and clicked SAVE I would have expected that source to be saved to the
event. I'm quite certain there are events I have entered recently that do not
in fact have the additional source documented because I have neglected to save
it twice. The problem doesn't exist if I repeatedly use the same source (and I
can change details successfully) - it is only when I swap between sources.
Maybe - having fired off another request for help - the problem will disappear
when I start Legacy tomorrow or later today. By the way, I have downloaded the
latest version (7.4) and problem still exists.

Cheers

[LegacyUG] Military Service Event

2010-01-31 Thread James Cook
What is intended to go in the description? Entering World War II or PFC
US Marine Corps doesn't look right in the generated sentence to me. For
the default template: [HeShe] served in the military [Desc]... I've entered
, US Marine Corps, in the Description filed so that it reads something
like this: He served in the military, US Marine Corps, from 1940 to 1944.
The notes field includes He was wounded during the D-Day invasion of
Saipan and received the Purple Heart. However, the added commas DO NOT
look good on a FGS. What to do?

I have maybe a dozen documents as part of his military file. I've captured
the time period, Purple Heart, branch, and could add another sentence to the
notes to include PFC. I am thinking that is the highlights. So, what I was
thinking I'd do is source all of those documents to a
single military service event. Before I go down that road, thought I'd see
if any of you would have reasons I shouldn't, but should included multiple
events for some reason, and how you would enter the info so it appears in
good form on any report.

Please advise,
jc

There is an existing problem that Show 1/2 kids does not show them all if
there is more than one unknown spouse - I actually do have an ancestor that
had kids from 2 different unknown men. (Well, I'm assuming they were
different - she had ill. kids before she married, and ill. kids after her
husband died.)

However, if you are pretty certain that the kids were likely from the same
unknown person, you want to change it to only one marriage (or
relationship) with an unknown. So, unlike all but one of the kids from
the parents, go to the marriage of the person and the unknown, and add the
kids back in (add existing child). Then, look at the list of the person's
spouses, and get rid of the extra marriages that are not needed.

Since I don't know if the kids share the same father or not they each have a

both show in the marriage to my uncle as half kids.

Rita,

I't a bit late here, and I've had a long day, so my apologies. I follow the
the part about what you did, but am unsure about the part about what kids
are showing up where and how!

So, this is what you should have. On the Spouse Screen (click the Spouse
Icon), your aunt should have the two marriages with the first marriage at
the top. The two children in question should be linked to this first
marriage.

The next bit depends on how you wish to show these two kids. You can leave
them just linked to the first marriage and they will show as half-kids on
the Family View screen for the second marriage. Or additionally you can link
them to the second marriage as either step, or adopted. In which case they
will show twice on Family View and also in Reports.

Hope that helps.

 Jane,

I understand that you are uncertain whether Nelson is Susanna's
maiden name or whther she had a previous marriage to a Nelson, in
event Carrie's surname is Nelson and her father is unknown. First
unlink Carrie from her current parents, then create another marriage
for Susanna - click on the spouse Icon for Susanna and add a new
husband called unknown. Then link Carrie to this marriage.

Return to the Spouse screen and ensure that the marriage to Unknown
 is first in the list.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Coexistence of Legacy 6 and Legacy 7

I'm migrating from a dying Win2k computer to an XP and Legacy 6 to Legacy 7,
both deluxe, with other cooperating compilers still running Legacy 6. It
would be very useful to be able to run both Legacy versions on the XP, but
it appears that they can't coexist because they collide on a Registry Key.
Is that the case, and is there a fix?

[LegacyUG] Master Location List 7.4

2010-01-31 Thread Pat Patton

I have completed the recommended changes to my Master Location List (as
described by Geoff) but I still have the following comma-delimited string
question(s):

Example: Alicia, Lawrence County, Arkansas, United States

Questions: 1) Should County be removed from Lawrence County?
i.e. Alicia, Lawrence, Arkansas, United States
2) Will this help or hinder Legacy 7.4 Geo-Code efforts?

Of course. *BUT* Because the intended use is not apparent to me, I want to
get a better understanding before going and and making such changes. I
don't feel I have enough information and/or experience with Legacy to make
the determination as to when and if I should right now, and am looking for
more than the 'it depends' answers that seem to cover any question one could
ask about Legacy. If you or anyone else have any input that would help a
newbie make informed decisions, I'd be grateful.

[LegacyUG] SourceWriter: help with source detail

2010-01-31 Thread Deborah Trounstine
Up to this point, I've been creating a new SourceWriter master source
for each source. For instance, for the 1850 Cincinnati census, I've
created a new master source for each census record for each family and
then link each family member to that master source, but I have not used
the source detail at all.
Today I tried creating a single master source and then individual source
detail for each of the associated people. It's logical, of course, but
when I went to re-assign the master source, I found there was no way to
re-assign the source detail from a previous entry as well.
2 questions:
IS there a way to re-assign the source detail from one individual to
another individual?
Is there a way to call up the source detail entries for each master source?
Thanks so much for you help :)

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.4 now available

2010-01-31 Thread Carl Cox
I have been trying 7.4 on the newFamilySearch. It works great except for one
problem: The list of names on the left that are being worked on can be
scrolled by the wheel on the mouse. But I often wish to scroll the screens
on the right, and am used to using the wheel. When the mouse cursor is on
the data screens on the right, I expect that screen to scroll with the
wheel, but instead I move a name on the left list and the program obediently
starts to retrieve the new data. I recognize that the wheel works that way
in many programs, and I can have that problem in those programs, but it
seems that the wheel would be more useful in moving the data rather than
selecting a name on the list.

Am I being too picky?

2010-01-31 Thread Linda McCauley
Your understanding may be incorrect. I use the word County in my
locations - it does not cause any problems in Legacy that I've ever
encountered in over 2 years of use. The mapping finds my locations
without any problem. I don't really pay much attention to the Geo
Locations since the mapping was added but before that County did not
cause any problem for me in Geo Locations either.

I wish Legacy was nicer about that.

Legacy by default is programmed to not have County or Co. in the field
where users write the county name for USA locations. However this is a user-
selectable item and Millennia has provided a way, albeit not obvious, for users
that wish otherwise to have their choice.

I have arranged Legacy to function with Co. after county names and have
absolutely no problems running Legacy this way.

To get this feature and change the default it is necessary to make a copy of
Legacy's GeoExtraCodes.txt file and name it to GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt Then
edit that Alt file in a text editor (e.g. NotePad), following the instructions
at the beginning of the file, to obtain the choice you'd like.

There are messages in the archives detailing this procedure, or if you wish,
get back here for further details.

The names the filter works on depend upon the one that was highlighted in
Legacy when you choose nFS. Filtering just uses those same names. I have
18000 names in my database, so selecting all the names is not an option.
Similarly, tag or focus requires working on the Legacy database, which
requires exiting the nFS screen then re-establishing it. All I want to do is
change the original highlighted name so I can use a different snippet of
names to work on, but I don't see how without the exit and re-signing in.

2010-01-31 Thread Wendy Howard
Hi Keith,

Thanks Ron - will continue addressing the issue. Seems I can simply click NO
and get around it - it is just annoying!

I think you missed something here - what Ron told you does provide a
solution that will probably work. Continuing to click NO and not fixing
the actual problem is not a resolution!

To recap, Ron said in his post to go to the Legacy Home tab in your
Legacy program, then Online troubleshooting help then Solutions by
Error Number. You can also go to the Legacy web site and go to the
Help Centre, which lands you at the same place -
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Help.asp#SolutionsByNumber Then locate
your number and click on it, and read what it says.

Most likely, in my experience, the solution offered that will solve your
problem, is #3 - run File Maintenance - Check/Repair. I've had to do it
a few times over the years when I've seen the same error that you've
reported.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard
