RE: [LegacyUG] Missing Pictures
Thanks for all the suggestions. My problem is that I like to keep all my pictures and other data in separate directories, stored in over 800 surnames directories and not within the Legacy directory. It would be so much easier for some of us if Legacy would program their search for missing files to look within the whole computer drive. With today's large drives this would take an inordinate amount of time. On the other hand, it really does not take very long to run through a cycle of the following steps:- a) Make a list of all missing multimedia files b) Pick one missing file and determine where it is now c) Add the new location to the list of multimedia paths -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Re: [LegacyUG] GEDCOM Issue [WAS: Source Name Filing System]
As I have mentioned before, I think Millennia could be proactive in implementing a workaround to this problem. I wonder if any competitors are doing this? Here is my suggestion: - during the export process, internally format each SourceWriter source citation as it would appear in a Legacy report; - output that formatted result as a block in the source detail, in the GEDCOM file. This would be inefficient, since the data from the master source fields would now be repeated in each citation, instead of stored only once. But wouldn't that be better than the current jumbled up mess that results from strict separation of master and detail fields? At least when you send a GEDCOM to a distant cousin, they would be able to make sense of your sources. Even back and forth transfers should keep their integrity. I'm sure there are some gotcha's in this idea, but is it worth analyzing further? Laura, I wouldn't hold my breath. The organisers/designers admit it is a long term project and is certainly far from new already. Mike is quite correct, it will not be of much use unless the big players incorporate it into their software - and arguably their use of propriety tags is in their own self-interest, as it makes it more difficult for people to switch from one database program to another. RE: [LegacyUG] Possible new buyer
Bob, I have never used Ancestral Quest and cannot compare the problems that may, or may not, be associated with an import from Ancestral Quest, however, I can definitely say that I imported genealogical databases from another Genealogical Program, that was not very compatible with Legacy Family Tree and do not know of any data that I have lost. Yes, there are General Notes, Research Notes, and Medical Notes sections for each individual. I must say that Legacy is the best, and easiest to use Genealogical program that I have used. If you do buy, try and get the Deluxe Addition. Perhaps there are others in the LUG that are much more knowledgeable about Ancestral Quest than myself. One more suggestion if I may, many people on the LUG will not respond to an email formatted in HTML, so please format your emails in Plain Text if you want to get the greatest response from members in the LUG. FTM are one of the big players and they provide import routine for Legacy and The Master Genealogist as well as their own, Gedcom and PAF. I think self-interest by the big players will go that route rather than uprate gedcom. Incidentally FTM when using the Legacy Import does not translate Sourewriter sources from Legacy properly. Hi Group, My thanks to all who replied to my questions listed below. My thoughts are to download the Trial Version and see how I like it. I do not have high speed internet, just dialup, and was hoping to not have to try this way, and also my local internet connection has been giving me trouble. Having said all that I will try the free trial. A suggestion was made by Charles that I send my questions in Plain Text. I don't know how to do this, as I am just sending my mail via Yahoo. I'll be glad to change if possible. Thanks again. Re: [LegacyUG] Possible new buyer
I suggest that if you can find a computer connected on broadband, such as at a library, go ahead and download Legacy there, save to thumb drive or burn to CD and then use that file to install Legacy. You would need to do the same thing when updating. In Yahoo, when you're in a Compose Mail window or replying to an HTML email, take a look at the far right, just above the Norton icon, where you can switch to Plain Text for the email you're composing. Bo, I'm not quite sure what you mean by the comment was hoping to not have to try this way. If you mean that you think you will need to download the program twice - once for the basic version and then again for the deluxe - you don't. The basic version contains all the extras for the upgrade and all you pay for is your code which will switch it on. You can leave this for as long as you wish. Sending in plain text considerably reduces the band width for your posts, and will be of benefit to all dial-up users. If you are using the latest version of Yahoo Mail on the extreme right of the email creation/reply page, on the line above the row of (HTML) symbols for bold etc. you will see a box switch to plain text just click it. I think I know what he means. When I first downloaded legacy I was also on dialup - it took me three nights to find a dialup connection stable enough to get through the download - and several hours to download it. You have to be dedicated to genealogy at times. It is a problem with most programs anymore but for many, dialup is almost the only option unless they are independently wealthy. It took a move to a different city before I finally got decent internet access. I dreaded anything that said download it via the internet because I knew what it meant. Hi Bob, My thoughts are to download the Trial Version and see how I like it. I do not have high speed internet, just dialup, and was hoping to not have to try this way, and also my local internet connection has been giving me trouble. Having said all that I will try the free trial. The Standard Edition of Legacy isn't a trial version - it's a good genealogy program in its own right. The Deluxe (paid) version is the same program with more features available to you, unlocked by the key you receive when you purchase that edition. If you can't access a broadband connection yourself (such as at a library as has already been mentioned) perhaps a friend could download it and copy the installation file to a memory stick for you? Or burn it to a disk? You don't say where in the world you are, for anyone here who is near to you to offer assistance. If you don't have access to the library, there is another option: Go to the Legacy Family Tree online store and purchase the standard version on CD for only $1.00. I guess there's shipping added on to that, but it doesn't seem it would be that much. Here is the link - then scroll down to the bottom of that page: http://www.legacyfamilytreestore.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=1 Jerry - MerriamFamilyTree.org On 9/5/2011 9:46 PM, Wendy Howard wrote: Hi Bob, My thoughts are to download the Trial Version and see how I like it. Hi, Jackie has it right. My concern was downloading it from dial up. I think I will try the suggestion of downloading it at my local library, as I can do that on my Laptop. And if I am unable to do that then I will send for the Basic Version for $1, plus what ever shipping may be involved. Thanks to all that replied. And thanks for explaining Plain Text. In my mind, to keep everything straight, I tend to think of the Line I'm researching and make that the determining factor on how I will look at things and set up my folders, etc. Not to cause a big debate here, but I try to save myself as much time and trouble as possible, so when I file anything I think about the easiest way for me to find something. So, yes, I do file the census in the surname folder for each family mentioned on that page(s). I feel that hard disk space is fairly cheap compared to the aggravation I'm caused when I can't find something. For example, my Mom called today with a question about the censuses I had listed in a Legacy report I had given her (she was actually reading it!) and without having to think about it while I was talking to her, I looked in the documents folder for the Surname and all the censuses were there for me to look at and answer her question. But two of the censuses had other family relations living next door and down the street, and those families had the same census in their folders. I guess it is easiest for me to have everything together by name - it's the way I think about genealogy. As for pictures, I keep my pictures by surname in folders in my Pictures folder, separate from those in the Legacy folder. First, I have many more pictures than I will put into Legacy and second, I want to keep my untouched-up photos separate. Every picture in the Legacy folder I have had to crop or touch-up. Ah, documents. Presently, they are not in the Legacy folder on my computer. I have followed the pros and cons here, but I already had my structure set up before I started using Legacy, and I felt if I couldn't see them in Legacy reports, and yet still link them within Legacy, it was fine. I know there have been changes in Legacy, so if I can print documents in a Legacy report I will think about having them the Legacy folder. Hope this help. Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Center '-' in Picture List ?
Byron, I've just investigated based on your instructions... The only paths I have are to the Legacy folder and its Data and Pictures folders. The pictures listed when I open the Picture Center are in the Pictures folder. Further, I found the Browse button at the top of the Picture Center and investigated the other two folders... nada. They both contain only some things that Legacy itself has put there. In other words, all of my linked photos that are displayed as being in the Pictures folder are indeed all only in the Pictures folder. So, what does the - beside a picture in the picture list really mean? Again, the majority of my pictures have this - rather than a + beside them. A few have nothing, but that's true... they're not yet linked. Could it be that the + means the picture has been attached to an individual or event, while the - means it's been attached to a source or citation?? --Paula in Texas - Original Message From: Byron byron...@charter.net To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Thu, September 1, 2011 12:18:28 AM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Picture Center '-' in Picture List ? It will display in the preview window to the right (If you have the Picture List tab selected). The U column to the left of the file names indicates whether or not each picture has been attached to someone in your family file already. The + means that picture in that folder has been attached to someone. The - means that file name has been attached to someone but from a different picture folder. For example, you may be looking at grandpa.bmp in the Legacy\Pictures folder but another file called grandpa.bmp in the Legacy\Reunion\Pictures folder is currently being used somewhere in your file. Re: [LegacyUG] Search for source detail picture
Hey, Rose, I've just been working on renaming my picture files to remove spaces, and I may have stumbled upon something that would work for you... since you don't really want to change anything about your citations... just the file names of the images. Right? I've just tested it with a picture that is attached to a master source: I renamed the picture file in my Pictures folder under Legacy. (You would deleted the PDF and copy the JPG into the folder.) Under Options Customize Locations tab, I clicked on Test All Media Paths. UNCHECK the make a list bit and then Proceed (so it prompts you when something is missing rather than writing it to a file) Sure enough, my renamed file showed up as missing. For the missing file, there are 4 buttons... click on the browse for file yourself button. Find the newly named file (JPG in your case) and click on it. Legacy asks if you really want to use this one with a different name? Yes. VOILA! THEN I tested it with two pictures attached to detail citations. You do the process for EVERY citation (not just for two pictures), so it does become tedious. However, you do not have to open the citations or individuals at all, so that saves some clicks. Hope this helps! --Paula in Texas Researching: Adair Baker Beasley Benson Betz Bigley Blagrave Burton Chapman Clement Clough Coppernoll Costine Daulton Dinwiddie Doody Ellis Exline Field Floran Floyd Gates Goodale Gordon Gump Hale Harbaugh Hind Hopkins Hughes Hurdle Jones Klein Koyle Laswell McDonald Misner Passwaters Pelton Roberts Roche Ryburn Short Singer Sullivan Weller Williams - Original Message From: Rose rosehat...@msn.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Fri, September 2, 2011 12:38:46 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] Search for source detail picture Hi all, Is there a way to get a list of everyone who has a specific source detail picture attached? Having said all that I will try the free trial. The Standard Edition of Legacy isn't a trial version - it's a good genealogy program in its own right. The Deluxe (paid) version is the same program with more features available to you, unlocked by the key you receive when you purchase that edition. If you can't access a broadband connection yourself (such as at a library as has already been mentioned) perhaps a friend could download it and copy the installation file to a memory stick for you? Rose, I've just discovered that all captioning/date/description info that you may have entered for an image is gone if you follow these steps. I don't know how much you use those fields, if at all. I don't use them much, but DID notice it on a picture of my cousin Rose from Ireland... I'm assuming that Legacy zaps that when you choose a file named other than what you originally linked. Don't know if that same logic applies if all you're changing in the extension.
