[LegacyUG] Best way to source?

2013-04-08 Thread Tony Rolfe
Greetings all

I have just subscribed to the Durham Records Online collection. After
searching, I eventually receive an e-mail containing a transcription of
a baptism, marriage or cemetery record. The e-mail content looks like:

---

Here is a copy of the record you recently viewed at Durham Records Online:

Baptisms, Easington District
Record Number: 66956.0
Location: Shotton with Haswell
Church: St. Saviour
Denomination: Anglican
16 Sep 1914 Alice Mullender, daughter of James Mullender & Alice Mabel
Elsie Mullender

-

If I'm using SourceWriter, what would be the best template to use?

Should I use the same template for all records (email?) or different
templates for each type of record?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

Perhaps someone who has v6 would be willing to attempt to open your .fdb file
if you emailed it direct to them. If they can open your file then it is not
the data that is the problem, but your installation.

Yes, Legacy support has the capability to take control of the computer via the
web and fix problems. I had a problem at the very beginning of installing
Legacy and a support person took control of my computer via the Internet and
fixed it for me. It is a wonderful service that Legacy provides.

It may be wise for the OP contact Legacy support and try to work through the
problem on the phone. Many software companies support have ability to take
control of the computer via the web and try to research and solve the problem
by seeing and working on the computer. I do not know whether Legacy has this
capability.

Re: [LegacyUG] Panic!

2013-04-08 Thread BK Ford
I am so appreciative of everyone's help. I am home now and will be trying some
of these things shortly. I really hope I can resolve it. I have received word
that my mother is declining rapidly. I know it may not seem like this software
issue should be the forefront of my mind, but my family relies on me as the
family historian, and there are going to be so many questions from everyone who
will be around in the next few days--questions that I can happily answer if I
just can get into my software. So, that's why it will be priority for me to try
to resolve this very soon.

I should have mentioned the install.log file needs to be there, it just
needs to be re-written.

The uninstall files have no extension. That was my fault

DO NOT WORRY ! There is no data corruption to YOUR DATA. The only
problem is with those install and un-install files

Tim,

Yes, I have, but that does not help anyone. There is no report of a failure to
uninstall, nor of a failure in installation (from the web). I still think that
the problem lies with corrupted .usr files, possibly Legacy.usr - but since I
cannot be sure I suggested moving them all.

or Uninstall Legacy.log
in your C:\Legacy folder or wherever you installed Legacy, it is in the
known Mantis bugtrak software as a known problem.

This is true but I think the OP said she was (re)installing the Legacy program
from a v6 CD that she had. I don't think she moved the .FDB from the CD to the
hard drive. Even still, the .FDB should openjust incapable of being edited

Your .fdb or other files be set to Read Only if you moved software using a CD.

Very true, but do you think Janet only wishes to merge those which have a city,
or is her last sentence a separate question which only confuses the issue?

[LegacyUG] Register for Webinar Wednesday - That First Trip to the Courthouse by Judy Russell

2013-04-08 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
If there is one home truth in genealogy research, it’s this: not everything
is available online. Sooner or later, every genealogist has got to make
that first trip to the courthouse to check out the original records
available there. Learn how to prepare for that trip, the rules of the road,
what to expect, what to ask for, and how to be sure you'll be welcomed back
the next time.

Join us for the live webinar on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 2pm Eastern

Edit the location and press the Save button. A message box will pop up saying
that the change will affect all records using the location. Reply YES or NO if

[LegacyUG] Master Location List Editing

2013-04-08 Thread Janet Bullock
Hello all,
If I want to change a master location and I go to View, Master List,
Location and click on the location, can I change it for everyone who is
listed as using this location? Can anyone tell me how? Would you tag,
which I have never done?

I want to leave out the word "county" if I have a city in the location.

Thank you,
Janet

I did try opening an .fdb file, as per Ron's suggestion this morning, but it
was likely the main family file that I tried to open. So, I will try your idea
this afternoon.

I agree. What appears on the screen is as a result of the Windows ERR - Error
Restart & Recovery - facility. Generally, Windows is unable to execute the
program. Looks like a corrupted installation.

Responding to this while traveling, so not at my computer. But I tried two
installs, both from the actual web site, so I'm confident it's the latest
version. The first time I tried while the "problem child" was still on the
computer. The second time I tried was after I had done an uninstall from the
Control Panel Remove Programs. Still have not had a chance to try all the
suggestions from Ron.

Re: [LegacyUG] Panic!

2013-04-08 Thread Ward Walker
Barbara,

In reading this thread, it is not quite clear to me whether you have tried the
following: Open Legacy by double-clicking on an .fdb file – any .fdb file
except your main family file. Sample.fdb would be a good choice. If you have a
clean install, that should work, and would confirm that something in your
normal family file has become corrupted. Once you can open Legacy with the
sample file, you can restore your latest backup file (or second latest, if
necessary).

Good ideas. And if you can indeed do either of these with no problems, then it
means that your family file is corrupted and causing Windows to shut down
Legacy rather than Legacy itself display some sort of internal error. Then it’s
time to look for an older ZIP backups of your family file that you might have
allowed to be created each and every time you shut down Legacy. These will tend
to keep on accumulating in the Data folder unless you use Windows Explorer to
delete some of the older ones. I usually keep the three most recent sequential
backups.

  Betty,

Can you open the sample database or even create a new one. Either of
these would tell that the install was OK and therefore it must be you database
that is corrupt.

As I understand the problem, when an attempt is made to start Legacy the error

Re: [LegacyUG] Panic!

2013-04-08 Thread Ron Ferguson
Barbara,

Thank you for your answers. Of course you can't read the Help Files - silly
old me! The list does not allow attachments, but I now have a pretty good
idea as to what you are seeing. Given that Legacy finishes installing and, I
agree, that the message is probably a Windows message, and from you
description, it would appear to start to run, I do suspect the installation
is probably OK, hence I think it most likely the the problem lies with the
stuff which is left behind after your uninstall.

I suggest, therefore, that you do as I previously suggested, but also park
all the .usr files. Do not put these back initially but follow the process
which I suggested before, and if you really wish to put the .usr files back
please do it one a a time and check after each one. BTW. if you are not
aware these files contain your colour scheme, report settings and just about
every setting which you have (or indeed have not) changed.

These are great questions. I knew I wasn't being clear in my original plea,
but I really was (and still am) in a panic about this. Of all the things on
my computer (and they are legion), this program is the most important. I
always back up to a zip file as well, so I feel fairly confident my data is
safe. Now to answer your questions as best I can:

Yes, I have opened the program many times on the current computer. I have
only tried through the desktop shortcut, EXCEPT, both times last night,
after I tried reinstalling, I opened it directly from the executable that my
computer gives me at the conclusion of the download process.
(See later paragraph, as I did try your other suggestions after typing this
paragraph.)

What happens is this: no matter the method tried, when I try to open the
program, it looks like the program is starting. Then there is a dimmed-out
screen behind the error message. In the dimmed-out view, the top menu ribbon
is there (the one that has Back Fwd, Name List, etc.) Below that, though is
something that looks strange. On a tiny bar it has the name of my file, and
then below that, little square boxes that are empty, a little rectangular
box that says 0 blocked, and a box that says Options and Go. (Those things
are all dimmed out, behind the error message, and not accessible.) I have
forgotten the rules on this list, but if you tell me it is allowed or how to
do it, I did take a screen shot of the screen that appears when I try to
open the program.

The error message: (It appears to me to be a Windows error message, rather
than a Legacy error.)

Legacy Genealogy Software for Windows has stopped working.
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the
program
[Then the only option is to click the button that is part of the message
that says...]
Close the program

I have now tried accessing the program through both of the alternative
methods you suggested. Same thing happens each time.

I have to be gone this morning, but unless I get "the call" about my mother,
I will try these things in your second paragraph, this afternoon. I know
what you are saying except that I don't know what is in the .usr files, so
it will be hard for me to know whether I want to keep them or not. Also,
when you say that the .usr files can be found in Help and Search for those
files, are you talking about searching through the Windows search bar? Or
where do I find the Help you are talking about--if it's within the program,
I can't get to Help or anything else.

Thank you.
Barbara

It is possibly a versioning thing. Maybe you aren't installing the "latest" V6.
There might be confusion in the registry because you are installing a previous
version over a later one.

the .usr files can be found in Help and Search for those files, are you talking
about searching through the Windows search bar? Or where do I find the Help you
are talking about--if it's within the program, I can't get to Help or anything
else.

Thank you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Panic!

2013-04-08 Thread BK Ford
Thanks, Ron, but no, there is absolutely no chance I might have installed v7.
Also, it's not saying it can't open a file, but rather, as soon as the program
tries to open, the background grays out and I get the error message.

I am currently using Abbyy Screenshot Reader which is also invaluable
when copying information into Legacy because in addition to 4 options
for copying (Area, Window, Screen, Timed Screen) it has a selection of
options for what and how to copy. It will copy text, a table or an
image and send to one or more of Clipboard, File, Word, Excel, eMail.

Saves an awful lot of typing when one can pick up huge wodges of text
and paste them straight into one of Legacy's fields. Especially useful
when one wants to copy text from an image.

Re: [LegacyUG] Panic!

2013-04-08 Thread Ron Ferguson
Barbara,

Please would you be good enough to clarify exactly when the start up stops
to work. In your first post you say that you receive an error message
"problem caused the program to stop working", is that the full message? If
there is an error number please can you let us have it. I assume that you
have only tried opening using the desktop icon, there are a couple of other
things which you may like to try: 1) go to C:\Legacy folder and double click
the Legacy.exe icon and 2) go to C\Legacy\Data and double click your .fdb
file. BTW. I am not clear as to whether Legacy has ever run on your WIN7
machine?

As you have found out, your thoughts on how to install V6 were correct,
however uninstalling does not remove all the files. Park your Legacy\Data
folder somewhere convenient (Documents will do fine) as this contains your
.fdb file and backup - unless you have stuck it somewhere else. Also park in
the same place any .USR files which you wish to keep - they are listed in
Help (Search for ".usr" (no quotes). Now uninstall and delete the Legacy
folder from C:\Legacy. Reinstall and run, and open the sample file. If all
is well replace the data folder with the one you parked. If all is still OK
replace the .usr files with the ones which you saved, one at a time and
testing after each one.

Please let us know the outcome.

I cannot open the program at all--is that what I would need to do in order
to try what you suggest? I can't even open the program at all.

Thank you for responding. I uninstalled through the Control Panel, even
downloaded it again from the web site and executed the install file afresh.
It still returns the same error. I'm wondering if something is corrupted in
my data, because how could a fresh install give that error?

I feel so sorry for you loosing your mother - it is never time - we want to
keep them as long as we are here.

It is an excellent idea to work on her obituary - then you DO something
worthwhile.

Then to your problem.
When you un uninstalled Legacy did you then also delete it in the control
panel under adding and removing programs.
I used to use another version of Windows myself and have just started using
Windows 7 - and I can not remember what it is called on W7.

IF you have not done that the old version is still there - it is just the
shortcut key you removed.

Hope this may help you solve your problem.

If you have an earlier back-up version of your file it may not have the same
problem. Just a suggestion.

Best wishes.

I hope I still have the right address! I haven't posted in a very long

tried several times, including a reboot. I use Windows 7 now and have
successfully migrated from computer to computer several times since I
began using Legacy. I am still using Version 6, and for now that is
what I want to continue to do. I am working on an obituary right now
for my mother, who is in her last few days. So, no time for anything
but the simplest solutions here. Of all times for the program to
crash

May I just say what I THINK will work, and someone please tell me if
this will not work. I have a note to myself, from my last computer
upgrade, that says, "Rather than using the CD to install the program,
go to http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ and download and install the
latest version of Legacy 6." (Will it be obvious to me where version
6 is?)

Then I have another note that says "make sure the Legacy folder is on
C: and install the program also to C:/Legacy; the program will pick up
all my preferences and file data." Is this correct still? If this is
correct, then should I uninstall Legacy from this computer first?

Thanks for any help,
Barbara Ford
