The picture on in the manual shows a Descendant screen with an individual highlighted, but there are no details for that person at the bottom of the screen. There is an arrow labelled Birth, marriage, and death information is shown for the highlighted person pointing vaguely to the middle of the Birth Date column - obviously the wrong place. RE: [LegacyUG] No emails
If only it were that simple. Spam has been an ongoing and growing problem for any server that receives email. The ever increasing volume has meant that providers have to increase their infrastructure just to handle emails that aren’t wanted. Moreover, it’s one of the biggest sources of dissatisfaction and complaints by subscribers. Over the years, large receivers of email have tried to stop (delete) messages identified as spam before they enter their system where the unwanted traffic would cause bottlenecks and complaints. Those attempts have often wrongly blocked messages from entire domains that have a high percentage of compromised accounts being used for spam, such as AOL, Yahoo, and MSN. Those tend to go in cycles. Today, many ISPs use blacklisting services that use differing criteria that then block domains, down to individual addresses. Some of these services are very responsive to request to be unlisted, others verify the accuracy of a listing when they get around to it, which can be months. I send a newsletter to customers who have requested to be included (under 2500) and it became impossible to keep up with the increasing number of services and trying to monitor which, if any, had blacklisted our mail server. Then to make matters worse, the mail server was shared by the thousands of domains housed in the server center. So, I could find my email being blocked because of the actions of an unrelated site. The more a service monitors and intervenes when a problem arises, the higher the cost. Costs increase in relation to the volume of messages as well and spikes in volume can lead to blacklisting as it may be assumed that the increase is due to spam. But, to the point, the mail list is not a service that you or I pay for, it doesn’t produce any revenue; only costs. I don’t understand why you assume that Legacy “must have some vested interest in the third party which they are using”. [LegacyUG] sourcing questions
I’ve been trying to figure out the answer to a sourcing question and have not been able to figure out the answer through the SourceWriter templates or through flipping through my copy of Evidence Explained, so I thought I’d ask here and see if someone else knows the answer. When you have a digital image of a vital record, the SW prompts you through the documenting the website source of the image, collection name, yada, yada, yada. You are also prompted to put in the date you accessed the website. So here’s the question: what if you received the image from a friend or family member? The birth certificate image or census image may originally have come from Ancestry or HeritageQuest or maybe even ScotlandsPeople, but YOU are not the person who accessed the website. How then do you cite the digital image of the record if you got it secondhand? As far as I can tell from the book, you’re supposed to source your source (the individual) as well as the real source of the digital image (the website vendor). I’m just not sure how to construct the source citation to show that. And what if you don’t know the source of your source, but you have a census image or a vital record image in front of you? And finally, once I’ve figured out the output format I’m supposed to have, how do I get that result in Legacy? Thanks in advance for the help. cheers, Kirsty Haining Seattle, Washington J Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). RE: [LegacyUG] Individual's details on Descendant screen
I was referring to the Descendent View. The right-click popup menu to add/edit/etc addition info related to the individual you right-click on there. This is discussed on pg 18 of the manual right after the mention of the bottom-view information block that is now gone. The right-click function was there in 7.5 and I see no reason why it would have been eliminated. RE: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions
Think of every fact (or event) that you record for an individual as something that needs to be proven ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’. Your source citations are your effort to build a case for a particular conclusion (fact or event). The quality of the source can make or break your case. It helps (for me, anyway) to remember the reason that you record sources. Your memory is not going to perfectly remember everything, especially as your tree gets bigger. You will find records with information that contradicts or conflicts with other records that you have gathered and you’ll want to figure out which is the most accurate. Sometimes you’ll discover that one paper trail is following someone who is not the person that you thought it was. Your source citations will help you come to a reasonable conclusion. Let’s say that you received an image of a birth certificate from a cousin who attached it to an email to you. The email may have said that she, or a genealogist that she hired, made a copy of the original document on a visit to xyz County Courthouse, sometime during the Summer of 2010. You could create a new Repository with your cousin’s name, say Sarah Rubenstein, recording her address, phone #, website (if she has one), and email address. If she is the source of several facts in my tree, I might create a master source calling it something like ‘Sarah Rubenstein’s research’. I would use that source and record the specifics of the email as they pertain to the birth certificate. In other words put as much as you can in writing, in a consistent way, so that you or others can follow how you came to the conclusion that a certain birth date is correct, for example. Unless that person can see the document themselves, what you or your cousin say is simply hearsay. The idea is to make it easier for that person to find the original document. In that respect, the ‘form’ is less important than the ‘substance’. Where did you get it? What do you know about it? You will have the opportunity to Analyze Source Quality on the Detail Information tab of the Source Citation detail screen. You add source citations on the same screen that you add events or facts to a person (click the paper/pencil icon in the middle of the icon bar below the general person facts or…click on the books icon to edit the Sources assigned to the person. Or…from the View tabMaster Lists dropdown, choose Source… As is usually the case in Windows programs, there are several ways to accomplish the same task. Use whichever is most intuitive to you. BTW, use the Help tab Help Index and begin typing the term that you want help with into the box. I typed sour and had a list of “source” related subjects come up. Don Hanson From: Kirsty M. RE: [LegacyUG] Shared events
I’ve been playing with Shared Events in the last few days … Good review by Kim … Nice to see a Roots Magic GEDCOM export with Shared Events imports almost perfectly into Legacy 8. Kim mentions issues with Sentence Overides and I agreed until I FINALLY realized the Sentence Overide tab in the event itself should be left untouched; it seems that any change to this prevents event updates to be reflected by those sharing the event. Instead, got to Event Definition in Master Lists. For each Event there is the standard Event Sentence Definition AND AND AND a separate tab for the Shared Event Sentence Definition which by the way can be set for each role in the shared event. C.G. That is what it does. Just this morning, I once again entered allot of profiles into Legacy 7.5. I fund a merge I needed to do, so I did it. There is a prompt to backup, so I click backup and do you know what it doesn't all the work done before the merge is gone. There is no backup there since last night when I closed Legacy. So, I immediately did a Backup off the File menu and sure enough it is there. So, I have learned to backup off the file menu before doing any merges. Re: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions
I usually add a Comment to the effect that the image was supplied by X. You can add a Source Comment or a Detail Comment, or both, whichever you deem appropriate. And finally, once I’ve figured out the output format I’m supposed to have, how do I get that result in Legacy? You don't need to worry about the format because Legacy does all the formatting for you. If you are using SourceWriter just fill in whatever fields are appropriate (*) and you will see a Preview of the output as you go along. This may also happen with Basic Sourcing but it's been so long since I've used that, I've forgotten! (*) Probably a good idea to remind people again that you do not necessarily need to fill in EVERY field, nor even worry about a field name possibly not describing the data you are entering into that field. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). RE: [LegacyUG] Backup files
John I think what you are seeing is the contents of the zipped (compressed) backup file you created. Windows File Explorer treats the compressed backup file as a folder and lets you view the contents, but it is only a single .zip file. There are various associated files that get created depending on which functions you use. Some are temporary, others like the .rc3 (relationships) file are more permanent and therefore get included in the backup. If you want uncompressed backups of your files, you can just use Windows File Manager to copy those files to an alternate directory and/or drive. Re: [LegacyUG] Shared events
Like you I have been playing with Shared Events but am having trouble with the sentence definition. I have looked at the PDF manual and help but am still stumped as to how to proceed. I have created individual census events (i.e. Census - Canada Census 1916, Census - United States 1880, etc.). I have created various roles in these Events as the need arises, such as wife, child (not son or daughter), father, mother, etc. I would like a sentence something like: Canada Census 1916 shows John Doe(head) residing in [place] with wife (wife) and child(ren) and who ever else is shared When I try to make the sentence it does not pick up the wife but re-enters the head. It does not seem to find the individual roles. How would I construct this to show what I want, including all roles without having to enter every role individually to the definition when I cannot see how many there are (listing 6 children, a father and stepmother - for example). I looked forward to this function, specifically for Census events, but until I can get a handle on this one, I would have to reconsider it for other events. RE: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions
Don — Thank you for this thoughtful response. It helps clarify some issues in my mind. It sounds like, in my specific situation, you would advocate sourcing the person who supplied the vital certificate rather than the entity that created or holds those certificates. This is opposite what Jenny was saying she does — in the example you used, Jenny would (if I understand her correctly) source the birth certificate’s issuing agency and then comment that she received the image of the birth certificate from Sarah Rubenstein by email who said she got it from her professional genealogist who visited xyz County Courthouse in the Summer of 2010). The actual style of sourcing, then, seems like one of those stylistic choices that a genealogist will choose and then hopefully stick with consistently (like burial notes versus cemetery event). Your comments on “form” versus “substance” and the purpose being to help another person find that same information are also helpful. I think I can sometimes get bogged down worrying over the “right” way to do something, when what’s most important is that the information is communicated. It seems like every year or two I’m updating the way I handle sources; they become more and more precise. (And I always vow that one of these days I’m going to have to go back and fix the incomplete sourcing I did back when I was first getting started.) I felt confused about what to do earlier today, but now I feel more confident in the choices I’ll end up making for my particular sourcing situations. Thank you for your response. cheers, Kirsty Haining Seattle, WA J From: Don Hanson [mailto:terra...@comcast.net] Sent: Monday, December 9, 2013 1:09 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions Think of every fact (or event) that you record for an individual as something that needs to be proven ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’. This may also happen with Basic Sourcing but it's been so long since I've used that, I've forgotten! (*) Probably a good idea to remind people again that you do not necessarily need to fill in EVERY field, nor even worry about a field name possibly not describing the data you are entering into that field. RE: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions
I think the only thing challenging about eBooks is that the page number would be a little difficult to determine. They are still published entities. Just use SourceWriter for book, and choose the appropriate source — for an eBook, I'd choose CD/DVD and put eBook in the format field (probably modified by either epub or Kindle or PDF). Since page number depends on your font choice, I'd just be sure to cite the chapter and say something like p 5 ( 1/4 through chapter in a medium font) to cite a particular page. At least with Kindle format you have section locations that you can cite. -Original Message- From: Rick [mailto:africkkeel...@gmail.com] Sent: Monday, December 9, 2013 3:21 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] sourcing questions This may sound silly, but I have been following this thread and decided to ask to see what I get for answers. [LegacyUG] Media management within Legacy
For those of you who have scads of media files attached within Legacy and have created wonderful reports and charts and websites, I have a few questions about how you manage your media files. Not so much on your hard disk, but more within Legacy itself. (Since moving to Legacy 8 I've been taking some time to get re-acquainted with some of the features. Picture Center wasn't something I paid much attention to previously, but now I thought I'd make a more concerted effort to attach my thousands of media files to their appropriate persons.) So here are my questions: (1) When you have an image that relates to more than one event, do you place the image in multiple places? I.e., for a birth that also discusses the baptism... both places? Or only one? Or one in birth, and others in the sourcing details for both events? If you have the same photo in more than one event, and then have photos turned on in your report option, do you like the results you get? (2) Do you ever have multiple copies of an image attached to a person for any reason, and if so, why? Also, does it affect the way your reports and websites get generated? (3) Are there any pros and cons to attaching group photos to more than one individual? (4) Is there anything about the way you've attached media files in Legacy that you'd wish you'd done differently? and, finally, (5) Is there any advice you would give to someone who's just starting out with attaching media? Thanks, all! Re[4]: [LegacyUG] Shared Events
Laurence et al, What do you mean by not supported? If you mean that it has not been updated with an official update, you are correct. But at least two attempts have been made, with one attempt happening now. The issue is that now there are stronger, better financed vendors with vested interests in competing data models. That, with the wealth of existing Gedcom files, is going to make it hard to get an agreement on an updated standard plus any acceptance by the user community. If you think that existing Gedcom files are hard to read, the proposals on the table will require most folks to have a Ph.D. in Computer Science to understand the content. [LegacyUG] keyboard shortcuts again
I have read the thread and must add that the removal of the keyboard shortcuts has killed my desire to buy the new version. I had it in my cart, along with all the new CDs, but backed off when I tried the free version and experienced this loss. I use keyboard shortcuts all the time and would encourage Legacy to add them back, whether the same or different. I am a genealogy teacher and have always encouraged my students to buy Legacy. Re: [LegacyUG] v7 free two questions
Q1 - I don't know. Q2 - Of course you can untag individuals one at a time. In Family View, just click on the individual's tag number to unhighlight it when you are finished processing that person. If the # tag you want isn't showing, right click on one of them and click on tags to show to get the one you want to show. Are you also using the right and left arrows at the bottom to move through the tagged list? You can change which tag # is showing there, too, with a right click. And though I haven't used it since last year, there might be some tricks in the Search Census List tab. --Paula in Texas Researching: Adair Baker Beasley Benson Betz Bigley Blagrave Burton Chapman Clement Clough Coppernoll Costine Daulton Dinwiddie Doody Ellis Exline Field Floran Floyd Gates Goodale Gordon Gump Hale Harbaugh Hind Hopkins Hughes Hurdle Jones Klein Koyle Laswell McDonald Misner Passwaters Pelton Roberts Roche Ryburn Sanford Short Singer Sullivan Weller Williams From: singhals singh...@erols.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Saturday, November 30, 2013 12:15 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] v7 free two questions Yes, yes, I know I'm so far behind the curve it's scary, but since you've all solved all the old problems, one of you must remember how to do these things. Re: [LegacyUG] Media management within Legacy
A couple of tips (or more ;-)) Decide where you want to keep the media you attach to Legacy and set this as your Default Media Folder - Options 6.2. If you decide to use a number of sub-folders, set the parent folder to the Default Media Folder If you use the Picture Centre, you need to move or copy your media to your Default folder(s) before you start attaching. If you use the Media Gallery for each person, you'll be asked when attaching if you want to copy the media to the Default folder (or on the Advanced tab - to another folder of your choice - eg one of the sub-folders). The Picture Centre remembers, at least in the short term, the caption etc you add to the photo. If you want to attach the same photo to a number of different people with the Media Gallery you can copy and then paste. This also copys and pastes the caption etc. The Media Galleries are easier to use. The Picture Centre is quicker if you are organised and have a lot of pics you want to attach in the one session. Note that it only handles Pictures and not other media types. Re attaching a picture more than once to the same person - I wouldn't. And I'd hesitate to add it more than once to a nuclear family if it's the only pic for an event and therefore the preferred pic which will be included in reports - awfully repetitive. Last tip - Legacy doesn't need large archive sized pics - I started off with screen-sized copies of my archived pics so they'd look good in a slider show - see View - Scrapbook if you don't know this feature of Legacy. The problem is that the screen now has a lot more pixels than it used to so I'm now adding pics a little larger but I haven't yet gone beyond 1024 pixels wide and probably won't. The file size gets too large for them all to be saved/backed up easily. I keep my attached media in Dropbox along with my Legacy backup files. I don't backup the media through the Legacy backup as its already backed up in Dropbox (and ontp external drives when I backup my computer). Have Fun, Cathy At 09:27 AM 10/12/2013, you wrote: For those of you who have scads of media files attached within Legacy and have created wonderful reports and charts and websites, I have a few questions about how you manage your media files. Re: [LegacyUG] Transfer of Legacy Data/Multimedia to New Computer
Hi Todd, Legacy 8 makes it much easier to transfer from one computer to another but you're doing it with 7.5 If you want to keep the data for the Picture Centre you have to preserve the piclist.dbm files in each of your media folders. The data's not a problem. Put it where you want (or restore the backups) and then open with Legacy. The media requires more handling to adjust the links. When you have the media where you want it, you'll find that it isn't showing because of the different path. Take a look at View Master Lists Media Folders and see where Legacy expects to find the media Then use Search and Replace on Lists - Media Folders to change the beginning of the path from the old location to the new one. Then in Options - Customise - Locations tab - Test all multimedia paths - just to make sure it's found everything. This can be done in Legacy 8 as well but it's best to use it to change the beginning of the path to [Default Media Folder]\ Then when you change computer you just go to Option 6.2 and set the Default Media Folder and you're done. Hope that's clear, Cathy At 12:37 PM 9/12/2013, you wrote: I want to transfer my Legacy family file from my old computer (running XP) to my new computer (running Windows 7.) For multimedia files, an example for photos of people is XP computer: C:\Documents and Settings\(username-on-XP)\My Documents\Legacy-7\Media\Photos\People\, Win 7 computer: C:\Users\(username-on-Win7)\Documents\ Legacy-7\Media\Photos\People\. I think I understand how to transfer the data files from old to new computer (backup the data files on the XP computer, copy the resultant zipped file to the Data directory on the Win 7 computer, and then restore it from there on that computer.) However, I am uncertain about how to transfer the associated multimedia files in such a way as to preserve/include the information (e.g., captions and dates) that appears in the Picture List Tab of the Picture Center (i.e., the PicList.dbm files that are located in each of the multimedia folders - in my case, there are a total of 98 PicList.dbm files corresponding to different groups/directories of multimedia files.) So my questions, restated here, are: -- Are the differing path front ends a complication in the transfer of the data and multimedia files? -- How can I ensure that the Picture Center (Picture List Tab) information gets included in the transfer? Any help will be appreciated! Todd . Re: [LegacyUG] Dropbox
When you go to run the backup, you first get the Customise Backup window. You specify where the backup file is kept and what it will be called at this point. Look for the large button Select Name and Location for Data Backup and click on it. If you need more help beyond that, let us know. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Thomas Jay Kemp said the following on 10/12/2013 6:18 p.m.: Would someone who uses Dropbox please post a simple, step by step explanation of just how to automatically save our backups to Dropbox? Re: [LegacyUG] Backup files
Are you saying that it is backing up the new work into the older zip file? I was viewing it in Windows File Manager. I made a new file and put restored that new file to it. Nothing was there except the same file missing my work. I am learning to back up about everytime I think of it. Or after inputting awhile. On Mon, Dec 9, 2013 at 2:33 PM, Kurt Kneeland kurt-kneel...@sbcglobal.netwrote: John I think what you are seeing is the contents of the zipped (compressed) backup file you created. *From:* Paul Gray [mailto:graypa...@outlook.com] *Sent:* Monday, December 09, 2013 3:12 PM *To:* LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com *Subject:* RE: [LegacyUG] Backup files Those files are not backup files. Main.fdb is a regular family file, the rc3 file is the associated relationships. The compressed backup files have an extension of .zip and it’s those that are compressed. Re: [LegacyUG] keyboard shortcuts again
Perhaps a list or table could be supplied showing all of these existing shortcuts? What is supplied in the Help is very short. Wendy Sherry/Support said the following on 10/12/2013 6:40 p.m.: Not all keyboard shortcuts are gone. The programmer told us We had to abandon all the one- and two-letter commands because we couldn't trap those keys anymore due to the ribbon control. All shortcuts are now either F-keys or Ctrl- or Alt-keys. Re: [LegacyUG] keyboard shortcuts again
Even better, a list that shows OLD SHORTCUT and NEW SHORTCUT (with n/a in the NEW SHORTCUT column for ones that no longer work) and what they do. This should actually also be included in the HELP so it is available for us long-term. I'm sure there will be some old non-working shortcuts that I will stumble upon weeks or months from now that I wonder why isn't this working. Having the old and new (and gone) all included in the list would allow me to explain the non-functioning shortcut (and would avoid me thinking I was going crazy!) RE: [LegacyUG] Individual's details on Descendant screen
The right click menu is there for me on Descendant View. Descendant View isn't a view I've used much but with the loss of the mouseover pop-up information boxes on Family View I'm trialling setting Descendant View to show just 3 generations so with customised columns I can get a lot of information on screen to ponder and see gaps in information as I did with the pop-ups. Cathy At 03:27 AM 10/12/2013, you wrote: I was referring to the Descendent View. The right-click popup menu to add/edit/etc addition info related to the individual you right-click on there. This is discussed on pg 18 of the manual right after the mention of the bottom-view information block that is now gone. The right-click function was there in 7.5 and I see no reason why it would have been eliminated. This worked properly in L7.5 but does not appear to work in L8. Is this information function available or not, have I inadvertently set something incorrectly, or do we have a bug? Does anyone else have this problem? Boyd .
