A childish question deserves a childish answer!

What's wrong with looking at the title of the window that opens when you press
the BIG button that's labelled 'Select File Name and START EXPORT'? Look at the
bar between the titlebar and the toolbar. It probably says something like

name -- My Documents -- Legacy Family Tree -- Data

RE: [LegacyUG] Upload gedcom to ancestry from V8

2014-01-19 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
If you don't want to go through all the steps to re-create your GEDCOM file,
just use Windows Explorer to search for it. Assuming that it is somewhere on
your C: drive, just type in the search window, *.GED (without the quote
marks). It will bring up a list of any and all GED files on the drive.

Other than re-creating the file all over again or having Windows search for it,
users of the forum cannot search your own computer.

Just a tip, but in the future, you may want to consider creating all these GED
files in the same folder that you can easily remember again. For example, just
create them in the same folder where you family file resides. The .GED file
won't affect the .FDB file.

I usually recreate something that I have lost to see where my computer
automatically saved it. There is usually a screen that asks is it ok to
save it here and fives you the opportunity to change that to somewhere
else.If you are not familiar with the windows search function that is a
fast way to figure it out. The original answer you got was quite abrupt
but a good choice. You will want to be familiar with the function for the
next time you do it anyway.

RE: [LegacyUG] Upload gedcom to ancestry from V8

2014-01-19 Thread David Abernathy
Another thing that works most of the time is to make another GEDCOM, but this
time LOOK to see where it is being saved. There will always be a pane that will
allow one to type in a name and at the top will show the path.

So by doing the second GEDCOM, one can see where it would be saved, and the one
can abort the making of the file. Now you can open Windows Explorer and browse
to the Path that was shown in the last pane.

Thanks,

RE: [LegacyUG] Identity theft

2014-01-19 Thread William Boswell
I delete all social security numbers, don't include sources unless I really
know this person, and tell them I do not want my information posted online.

I had this experience recently with a distant cousin I never met. He belongs
to the LDS church and he told me he doesn't use genealogy software and would be
posting it to FamilySearch. I told him I didn't want all my research put there
and if I did I'd put it there myself. My thought was since I did all the
research, why should he get credit for my work so I didn't send him my entire
file like he requested. Not happening. Instead I sent him a very scaled down
version of my direct lines with just information his mother sent to me years
ago (she died a couple of months ago) and some new information. I didn't
include the sources or any images.

I figure if they are really interested in the sources, they can request them
later. If they don't, it's a strong possibility they aren't interested in
researching to verify your data. This could also mean they are just going to
post it online so they can have a massive number of names in their tree.

Have Legacy remove living people and ones you're not sure are dead. You may
have to manually go through the index of individuals to see who doesn't have a
death date. If they were born in the 19th century, there's a great possibility
they are dead. If you do include sources, I would delete any text attached to
it. I know this is a big job, but I've done it for online trees.

You've worked hard on your family tree. Don't give it all away just because
someone, related or not, is too lazy to do the research themselves. My tree
has information I researched pre-Ancestry.com and the old-fashioned way. I see
too many people online want the research done for them.

I had a guy who claimed to be a well-known writer (Googled him and came up with
nothing) who wanted all my information, photos, etc. on one particular line. I
wouldn't give it to him because he refused to credit myself and other cousins
who provided the information. He emailed me recently saying his book was
coming out soon and he needed a better photo than one he found online. I told
him I didn't have one and I was using the same photo he had. One thing I
considered is when his book is copyrighted, it will include my information.
That means if I want to write a book, I can't copyright that same information
again because he did it already and now he owns my information. I know of one
tree on Ancestry that is copyrighted which is why I won't submit my photos to
it.

You never know what someone's intentions are so it might be better to quiz this
trusted family member a little more before sharing. Find out what they have
to offer in return or if they know anything about the family lines they are
requesting. I tell all the fakes I've worked hard on my research and it didn't
all come from Ancestry or other online providers. If they have nothing to
offer in return then they are probably newbies. This is not always a bad thing
unless they can't share anything about their side of the family. Some of my
newbie third cousins, who I've never met, were a big help because they shared
photos and information I didn't have which led me to new discoveries.

Sometimes, like me, you have to be a Scrooge with your data otherwise it will
end up on someone else's tree where it doesn't belong. I'm very over
protective of my data and you do have to worry about identity theft. I've been
a victim of it several times and I worry that someone can use identifiable
information against myself or other family members. Even dead people are at
risk.

One thing you can do. Instead of sending a GEDCOM just create a private online
tree at Ancestry and give them guest access. The only ones who get a GEDCOM
from me are cousins I've been working with for years and who we both have a
trusting relationship. Sorry for the bloated email.

I would like to share my files with a trusted family member (or friend). But
I'm hesitant to include much information on living people, even though this can
be suppressed by whomever gets the file. It's entirely possible that they could
enter this information online (whether intentional or not), or share it through
another medium. This has been a concern of mine, and I wonder how others handle
it. Genealogy could be a gold mine for unscrupulous people.

1. How much information do you enter, if any, about your children or other
living family members, and do you include sources?

2. Do you enter sources for yourself? You don't need them, but others might in
the future.

Thanks for any direction in this matter.

Re: [LegacyUG] Potential Problems List

2014-01-19 Thread Boyd Miller
I find the easiest way to deal with the list of potential problems is to
create a text file, not a pdf. By using ALT-TAB I can switch between
the text file and database, and there is no need to remember the Rin for
very long. Then I just delete each item from the text file as it is
dealt with. Any residual problems I can't resolve easily are the just
copied to a file where I keep all my more difficult issues.

Am I missing a connection point on this or does it not work in the
way I would like it - when in the Potential Problems List I
appreciate you can edit the person, or the marriage or the parents
but there seems to be no way to go to the Family View screen
directly from the list without either closing the list and the
search down (and memorising the RIN number) or making a pdf to
 keep the details.

Just a small point on something I would like to be able to do!

[LegacyUG] Can't uninstall 7.5

2014-01-19 Thread Paul Gray
Well, I'm happy with V8, want to uninstall 7.5.

Since I had read previous posts about uninstall problems and the missing
install.log file, I first went to C:\Legacy and verified that I indeed did
have that file. Went to the Legacy folder on my start menu and found an
entry for Uninstall Legacy 7.5. Clicking on properties for this item, I
found that it would execute C:\Legacy\Unwise.exe /U
C:\Legacy\Install.log.

Ran the selection, user account control asked for permission, said yes, then
the Unwise executed very quickly (about 1 sec), no message such as
uninstall completed, process finished or the like.

Went back to the start menu, Legacy 7.5 still there, clicked on it and
everything is still there and operational. Looked in C\Legacy, and
everything is there except the install.log file.

Tried to uninstall again, got message that install.log is missing.

Reinstalled 7.5 from website, it recreated install.log (saw that recommended
in previous posts)

Uninstalled again, same result. All I can get the uninstall to do is delete
the install.log file, nothing more.

I should say that my installation is the 'default installation' with
everything in C:\Legacy except that my data (family file, multimedia)
resides in a separate data partition.

Any ideas for next steps?

Re: [LegacyUG] Can't uninstall 7.5

2014-01-19 Thread Bob Janice
Paul,

Same thing happened to me. First I would check to see if you have the
install.log file in the Legacy folder. If you do, make a copy of it and
put it on your desktop for safe-keeping.

Next, go into the Legacy folder , find the file named unwise.exe and
double click it. Basically, you are ignoring the shortcut link inn the
Start menu and just executing it manually.

It will probably ask if you want to do a custom uninstall or an express
uninstall. Choose the express uninstall. (NOTE: can't remember the
wording exactly insofar as custom vs. express, but you will see what I
mean when the window comes up).

Let the express uninstall continue and when it finishes you should be
good to go.

Hope this helps.

Just deleting the Legacy folder from your hard drive (as someone
recommended) is probably not a good idea. That will get rid of the
Legacy files but leave a bunch of invalid entries in your Windows registry.

RE: [LegacyUG] Can't uninstall 7.5

2014-01-19 Thread Paul Gray
Bob,

That did the trick, except that I had to use the custom uninstall.

Executing unwise.exe gave me three options, Automatic, Custom, or Repair. I
first did Automatic and got the same old behaviour it just deleted the
install.log file.

Copied the install.log file back, and executed Custom. It threw up a few
screens asking whether I wanted to delete this or that. For those items that
were windows files (e.g. dll's) I said No, for those that were obviously Legacy
specific, I chose Yes.

Seems to have worked!

Paul,

Same thing happened to me. First I would check to see if you have the
install.log file in the Legacy folder. If you do, make a copy of it and put it
on your desktop for safe-keeping.

Next, go into the Legacy folder , find the file named unwise.exe and double
click it. Basically, you are ignoring the shortcut link inn the Start menu and
just executing it manually.

It will probably ask if you want to do a custom uninstall or an express
uninstall. Choose the express uninstall. (NOTE: can't remember the wording
exactly insofar as custom vs. express, but you will see what I mean when the
window comes up).

Let the express uninstall continue and when it finishes you should be good to
go.

Hope this helps.

Just deleting the Legacy folder from your hard drive (as someone
recommended) is probably not a good idea. That will get rid of the Legacy
files but leave a bunch of invalid entries in your Windows registry.

Hi Julie,

This is a common complaint from new subscribers, unfortunately.
Something doesn't go right when some people subscribe, as you're

You need to contact Support (supp...@legacyfamilytree.com) and tell them
what's (not) happening, and they should be able to fix it for you.

I'm sending this reply to the list as well as to Julie.

Re: [LegacyUG] Identity theft

2014-01-19 Thread Wendy Howard
I never, ever, share my entire tree with anyone, even my immediate family.

What I do share is this:

-- a descendants chart containing everyone in the line that is common
to us, edited so that only first name (or the one they're known by) and
last name are showing for living people. This way they know the living
exist, but they don't have enough information to track them down easily.

I start out by generating a text file of the chart, then editing that
file down to what I want to share. I may attach that edited file to an
email, or I may copy it into an email. If I do the latter, I change the
font of the chart to a proportional one (usually Courier).

-- a descendants book report, containing all (non-private) information
I have, including sources, for those who are no longer living.

I've also started creating closed groups in Facebook now, as well, and
invite to it my Facebook friends who are connected to that branch of the
family (I use a tag in Legacy to keep track of relatives on Facebook) so
they can meet each other too. I post copies of the two reports above
there as well, so that othes who I may not have exchanged information
with in a while can see any new information I've gathered recently.

I'm frankly horrified at the number of people I've come in contact with
over the years, who share every last detail on everyone in their tree,
including masses of living people. I record that information when it
comes to me, but I don't pass it on until I know the person is now
deceased or were born so long ago it's very unlikely they're still around.

Hope this helps. :-)

 Ed,

I enter everything and source everything. HOWEVER, I am very
selective with what I share with others. I will only export a select
branch or even just a single family. I will mark people as invisible
if I need to but I can’t even remember having to do this because I
rarely send anything to anyone that is dated more recent than about
1900. Why, because if it is recent they should have been able to find
it themselves J I never GEDCOM my entire file and send it to someone.

I would like to share my files with a trusted family member (or
friend). But I'm hesitant to include much information on living
people, even though this can be suppressed by whomever gets the file.
It's entirely possible that they could enter this information online
(whether intentional or not), or share it through another medium. This
has been a concern of mine, and I wonder how others handle it.
Genealogy could be a gold mine for unscrupulous people.

 1. How much information do you enter, if any, about your children or
other living family members, and do you include sources?

 2. Do you enter sources for yourself? You don't need them, but others
 might in the future.

Thanks for any direction in this matter.

[LegacyUG] Relationship

2014-01-19 Thread Robert57P_gmail
I have a couple of nieces (on my wife's side - my wife's brother's
kids). We took guardianship of them in their pre-teen years, thus I
have added them to myself and my wife as children in Legacy. I have
the children's setting Relationship to father (and mother) set to
Guardian.

My question - when I SET RELATIONSHIP on me or when I run the
RELATIONSHIP CALCULATOR, why does she ONLY show up as my DAUGHTER? Why
won't it show her as my NIECE also? (I have the non-blood relationships
set to 10 - the max).

Even if I unlink her from us (so she is only showing under her
blood-parents), NIECE still does not show up for me (yes, I recalculated
the relationships).

This is true for both 7.5 and 8.

For my wife, she shows up as both DAUGHTER and NIECE, but not for me. I
guess technically she might be considered my niece-in-law, but I
thought niece and nephew (and aunt and uncle) applied to both spouses?

Similarly, for another niece (on my side of the family - with no
guardian or other oddity):
When I SET RELATIONSHIP on that niece, I show up as Uncle, but my wife
does not show up as Aunt. Instead she shows up as Wife of Uncle.
When I SET RELATIONSHIP on myself, the NIECE shows up as NIECE.
When I SET RELATIONSHIP on my wife, my niece shows up as NOT RELATED to
my wife.

 Ron,

Having worked with computers since 1964 when many still had vacuum tube
amplifiers, and having worked as a programmer, senior technical writer,
systems engineer and database manager, among other duties, as well as
acting as a beta for a wide variety of software manufacturers, I feel that
I am very familiar with the software industry.

You obviously did not read carefully what I wrote. I did not advocate,
nor mention, providing program updates to Millennia's software at no cost
to the customer. I only speculated on alternative means of providing
more current versions of documentation to Millennia's customers who had
already paid for the program and its documentation. In the case of the PDF
manual version I fail to see where offering a free download update to that
PDF file to those customers who had already purchased a PDF manual would
represent any significant added cost to Millennia if they are udating that
PDF version regularly anyway. Naturally such customers would have to
provide their customer number to validate their entitlement to the updated
 PDF manual.

I am always amazed at how people manage to comment on other people's
writing without reading that writing. Any software firm is faced with a
juggling act between holding production costs at bay while also supporting
their customer base with adequate documentation. My suggestions were made
with both concerns in mind, and I feel they offered options that might
 satisfy both needs.

Perhaps a better, or alternative way of providing the Legacy printed
reference manual would be for Millennia to use an on-demand publishing
service, such as Lulu. That way they could provide the publisher with
updates on a regular basis and customers purchasing a printed manual would
get the latest version when they buy.

The PDF version of the Legacy reference manual should be constantly
updated along with the Help files. Those who purchased a PDF Legacy manual
should be provided with a means of downloading the latest version of the
PDF manual whenever it is updated, and at no cost to the customer. Updates
to the PDF manual could be provided to an on-demand publisher of the
printed version to keep that version in sync with the PDF version and the
 Help files.

I am a huge fan of Geoff Rasmussen's Legacy webinars, and have attended
almost every one of them. Although Geoff's book, Unlocking Legacy 8 is
very useful and enjoyable to read, because it is patterned after the Watch
Geoff Live webinar presentations it is not well-suited for use as a easy
reference work because it lacks an index. One must be willing to read
through an entire chapter in search of a particular setting or partial
 process.

Legacy/Millennia already provides free upgrades to their software - most
of those free upgrades have been substantial updates to the software that
many companies would have called a new version and charged customers for an
update. Millennia has not done that. Updating the user manual every time
there has been a change to the software could and would become an expensive
undertaking for Millennia, yet you think that they should undertake this
additional cost - free of charge to their customers. The help files are
kept updated and I personally think that is sufficient.

I'd be curious to know what other software company/companies update their
manual (whether printed or pdf) every time they have an update to their
software. I am always amazed at how people have this mentality that a
company has bottomless pockets and therefore being a customer entitles them
to all the freebies they can get regardless of the cost to the company.

[LegacyUG] Potential Problem display for an individual

My Edit Children button is greyed out, so I'm guessing it applies to
the children of this person, not to her siblings.

I went back out of the edit individual screen to the Pedigree View
window (where 7.5 had a useful display of her siblings) and did the
right-click and view siblings shuffle. Now I get a list of sibling
names (without any details), but there doesn't appear to be anything
equivalent to the V7.5 Children's details option, so I still can't
find a way to display a list of her siblings with their birth dates.

Just another of the ways that V8.0 makes life a little harder for us.

Hi Boyd,
Yes - I can do that - I can also delete items from the pdf file with my
programme but it seems it would be so much simpler to have a button - as in
the To Do List - where it says Go to this person. Often there are several
errors that will be solved in one family, e.g. where one of the parents
birth, marriage or death dates is incorrect most of the siblings are
affected by the one correction. I have suggested that if this could be done
on one screen it could probably be done on another. I shall wait and see.

Am I missing a connection point on this or does it not work in the way I
would like it - when in the Potential Problems List I appreciate you can
edit the person, or the marriage or the parents but there seems to be no
way to go to the Family View screen directly from the list without either
closing the list and the search down (and memorising the RIN number) or
making a pdf to keep the details.

 Â

Just a small point on something I would like to be able to do!

Well - an update! This morning upon signing in it worked like it did in V 7. I
have a notice that version 8.0.0.385 is now available for download.

So why not a symbol for other events? It seems odd. And there is no explanation

So we have a pointless symbol which adds nothing to the statement which says

RE: [LegacyUG] Relationship

2014-01-19 Thread Kurt Kneeland
I can't answer the why part of your question, but it is how Legacy is set up.

The Relationship displayed in Family View, Pedigree View and other places is
always a blood relationship, immediate in-laws, or spouse of those.

Other non-blood relationships are only shown in the Relationship Calculator,
and then they are listed as not related but the relationship path is shown.

Legacy's limitation of the aunt/uncle - niece/nephew to just the blood
relationships does appear to be non-standard. Wikipedia, Meriam Webster and a
couple of other online dictionaries all included the spouses of aunts and
uncles as uncles and aunts, and conversely, the children of a spouse's siblings
as nieces and nephews. Wikipedia did mention that in some cultures, the
designations are different.

I have a couple of nieces (on my wife's side - my wife's brother's kids). We
took guardianship of them in their pre-teen years, thus I have added them to
myself and my wife as children in Legacy. I have the children's setting
Relationship to father (and mother) set to Guardian.

My question - when I SET RELATIONSHIP on me or when I run the RELATIONSHIP
CALCULATOR, why does she ONLY show up as my DAUGHTER? Why won't it show her as
my NIECE also? (I have the non-blood relationships set to 10 - the max).

Even if I unlink her from us (so she is only showing under her blood-parents),
NIECE still does not show up for me (yes, I recalculated the relationships).

This is true for both 7.5 and 8.

For my wife, she shows up as both DAUGHTER and NIECE, but not for me. I guess
technically she might be considered my niece-in-law, but I thought niece and
nephew (and aunt and uncle) applied to both spouses?

Similarly, for another niece (on my side of the family - with no guardian or
other oddity):
When I SET RELATIONSHIP on that niece, I show up as Uncle, but my wife does
not show up as Aunt. Instead she shows up as Wife of Uncle.
When I SET RELATIONSHIP on myself, the NIECE shows up as NIECE.
When I SET RELATIONSHIP on my wife, my niece shows up as NOT RELATED to my wife.

It would be really nice to have a button Display siblings list.

I would guess from what you've written that you're looking at the Individual

the main subject of the Family View. Those red dots are still visible (or should
be) and can still be clicked on. Plus, you have the advantage of seeing all the

Re: [LegacyUG] Relationship

2014-01-19 Thread Brian/Support
And Kurt's last sentence explains why Legacy does differentiate between
spouses of blood relatives. When relationships were redesigned to
accommodate the other languages we had to change from the usual English
method and differentiate between a blood relative aunt uncle niece
nephew and the equivalent who were only related by marriage not blood so
those languages could use the correct terminology.

Re: [LegacyUG] Can't uninstall 7.5

For those items that
were windows files (e.g. dll's) I said No, for those that were obviously
 Legacy specific, I chose Yes.

 Seems to have worked!

I had to do all above myself to finally delete L7.5. Unfortunately
though, all my very precious media was deletedpermanently...how I am
not sure? All I remember is being frustrated that 7.5 was not being
deleted properly at first, and then later, finally agreeing to a
delete, bypassing the recycle bin. Still trying to work out how and
why :-(
