Re: [LegacyUG] Families

Can we please limit the discussions to Legacy and Legacy Add-on
Programs, the purpose of this list??

Legacy works well with Families 2.0 for Android and iOS devices and
GedStar Pro and Family Bee are a competitors.

Thanks!

Is the file in Legacy/Data now? If not, it might help to put it there. Then
after you open it from there the first time, the next time it should open
properly. This is just a guess, so I might be wrong.

Of course. That's why I said one should only use it on one computer at a
time, otherwise you can get "conflicting copies".

The great advantage I see is that you are working with a local file, but with
cloud backup and transfer.

There is also a special Legacy multiuser thign, but I have not used that.

Of course.

That's what makes Dropbox so useful.

I don't think Legacy would work very efficiently (or at all) with data files
stored only on a remote server. But with Dropbox your data is backed up
remotely as soon as you sync it.

Hi

I can't figure this out. After reformatting my computer I installed Legacy
7.5 from the website. I have several family files that I had backed up and
saved to an external hard drive. I restored those files and then backed
them up. Now when I go to File, Open Family File, Legacy is looking in
"Temporary Internet Files. I can direct it to my C, Legacy, Data file but
the next time I want to open a family file it is looking in the Temporary
Internet File again. What did I do wrong? How can I fix, or do I need to
delete everything and start over again?

Re: [LegacyUG] Status of TMG importer

2016-01-23 Thread Jamie Poindexter
Steve,

Paul is correct. Your desktop and laptops using Dropbox have a folder
that is called Dropbox. Anything you save there is synchronized to the
cloud Dropbox server. Anything synced to the cloud server from one
computer is also synced to your other devices. If you are offline in a
library, you have access to your Legacy files from the Dropbox folder on
your laptop. The next time you are online with that laptop, Dropbox
will sync your changes in your local folder with the cloud server, and
likewise, with your other devices.

The key is to make sure that no one, you or your wife, access that
Legacy file until the changes you made while offline are synced with the
cloud. If she were to make changes online at home while you are making
changes offline, when you get back online, your updates may overwrite
hers, or worse, the whole database get corrupted.

My team are distant cousins working on the same database. We use Skype
to determine if the others are online (in our case, we never use TMG
when offline). If I see someone is booted up, as indicated in Skype, I
text or call them before I boot TMG on my computer to confirm if they
have TMG open. We all agreed to set Skype to always boot when we turn
on our computers so that we can rely on the Skype indicators. If no one
else has their computers showing active in Skype, I can open TMG. This
would work with Legacy as well, except in your case where you are
offline in the library, but you could open Legacy to look at data, just
don't make any changes, then you don't have to worry about overwriting
your wife's changes.

Maybe we should rename this thread to Using Dropbox with Legacy.

One thing to note here. Using Dropbox, or other similar services, is NOT

One way of doing it is by using Dropbox.

You can keep your Legacy data files in a Dropbox directory. I have done this
with Rootsmagic, where my wife and I access the data files from desktop or
laptop computers. It is best to turn Bropbox syncing off when actually working
on the file, and to make sure that one is only working in it on one computer at
a time.

This would probably work with Legacy v 7.5 or earlier, but would be awkward
with Legacy 8.x, which has a different default method of storing data files.
As a result of that I transfer the Legacy data from my desktop to my laptop
with a USB flash drive, and every time I change I have to do the "Restore User
Defaults" routine. But I still back the data file up to Dropbox.

RE: [LegacyUG] sneaky <>

Or she could just permanently remove them from the Notes sections where the
text was entered by clicking on the “Strip HTML” button on that Note. Copying
and pasting directly from Ancestry and FamilySearch will often include these
invisible tabs even at the end of lines making them difficult to see without
clicking the mouse to locate a cursor beyond the end of the line. If the cursor
sticks an inch away from the end of a line, then you’ve got some hidden tabs
there. If you can see some visible tabs (“<>”), the Strip HTML button
works on that also. Just get in the habit of clicking on the Strip HTML button
whenever pasting text from a web source.

Go to Options>Customise>6.Locations and enter the correct location for

Re: [LegacyUG] Families

2016-01-23 Thread Sherry/Support
If you go to our website www.LegacyFamilyTree.com, check out the list of
Add-Ons under that menu item.

The download link is for v3, which doesn't even show in their change log! I
doubt very much that the download you found would work with the latest
version of Legacy.

GedStar Pro is currently v4.6.0. If you go to the GedStar Pro website, it
states that support is limited there is no guarantee for updates or future
releases. Looks to me like the developer is running out of steam.

Families 2.0 works directly with the Legacy FamilyFile and no gedcom is
necessary. You can edit the data and reimport it back into Legacy. Malcolm
Greene, the developer of Families, is still around and doing great support
for this app. There's also an iOS version.

I used GedStar Pro back in the Palm handheld days!

RE: [LegacyUG] sneaky <>

2016-01-23 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
>. it looks like it is seeing the outer < and > and removing everything
>between.

Confirmed.
Thus the nested "<<" makes no difference in what it removes. For example, if
one were to add this phrase to any notes, <>, and then hit the Strip HTML button, it would ALL be erased. In other
words, it seems as if it's not really looking for HTML codes but merely the
"less than" sign and the "greater than" sign as flags, and then assumes it must
all be HTML so everything goes into the bit bucket.

Along similar lines, I remember several months back when I got fancy with my
treatment for Unknown names and entered them as . You cannot believe
the HTML mess I got when Gedcoms were uploaded to Ancestry's web pages.

Your conjecture that the characters might be alt0171 and alt0187 might be
possible but I can't see how they can be confused because they are so much
smaller. Here is the ASCII Code for such printable characters:

ASCII code 174 = « ( Angle quotes, guillemets, right-pointing quotation mark )
ASCII code 175 = » ( Guillemets, angle quotes, left-pointing quotation marks )

The double "smaller than/greater than" characters would look like << and >>.

Close but no cigar. But I do like your other suggestion to do a "Search and
Replace" to permanently get rid of the offending characters whether they be RTF
formatting codes or printable ASCII characters. Hopefully the OP can utilize
one or more of these methods and achieve some joy.

It may be because the arrows before and after the tab are not two arrows << and
>> but are alt0171 « and alt0187 » characters which are not recognized as
HTML but are part of the RTF code for a tab character.

Also the Strip HTML removes text between single arrows but I see it works when there are nested << and >> as well, it
looks like it is seeing the outer < and > and removing everything between.

Re: [LegacyUG] sneaky <>

2016-01-23 Thread Cathy Pinner
Well I certainly won't be getting rid of my tabs in Legacy event notes.
It takes a combination of tabs and spaces if the first space is really
irregular size and the tab is a set unchangeable size in Legacy, but
I've had things line up by using tabs for years.

Since you can remove them from the gedcom and replace with the html form
of the tab by just checking a checkbox, WHY would you get rid of them?
You need to do that for bold and italics etc anyway.
