If your settings are disappearing on an update of Legacy 8, it sounds as if the computer is confused as to where the Documents folder is. If it's been moved, check that it was moved correctly and is being referenced correctly all the time. OR you are logging in to two different accounts? The Legacy settings are held in Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData as you know so are user account specific. Steve, The pop up about the county is from the USA County Verification tool which can be turned off at Options - Customise 2.1 - about half way down the list in that section. Re: [LegacyUG] Unlinking part of my tree
Thank you everyone for the suggestions - tagging and checking seems a good way to go although I like the idea of Laura and Anne's suggestions of using a data base and think I will try this. It seems a more 'visual' way of checking what I have. I appreciate everyone's help. I'm not a name or tree collector, in fact my tree is fairly small because I always (or thought I always) triple checked that I could prove the connection etc. Yes - I do have a few people who I believe are connected and who I have entered but they are tagged and I have notes in the research section indicating why they are there and what I need to do to find proof. I never go back further on that line until I have cleared up the queries in my notes. My 'Smith' issue is not from just entering names that I have 'collected' but is from having - for example - three Parish marriage records for John Smith who all married Mary ? and inadvertently adding the wrong Mary, therefore making Mary's tree incorrect. Somewhere in the line I have (for example) had 3 John's the children of 3 Thomas and Mary, all born within a 3 year period and I have in error given each Thomas the wrong son. You could say I made a clerical error and now I have to go back to the beginning and fix it. I've got nearly all the paper work, it's one of my biggest lines and includes many people who unfortunately share between them only a handful of Christian names. Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I can see I have a bit of work ahead of me. Re: [LegacyUG] Unlinking part of my tree
Michael, Depends on what you are looking at. For the problem that started this thread, I would use a spreadsheet and start listing the different John Smiths across the top with dates down the left column. Under each John Smith I add what source information (including relationships and locations) that I know about him with the date of each source listed on the left. I continue adding John Smiths across the top for any source that I can't for sure tie into an already listed John Smith. By the time I've listed all the sources that I can locate, I can usually sort most of the records into particular individuals. You can export almost any set of data into a csv format and pull it directly into a spreadsheet program like excel. Re: [LegacyUG] Unlinking part of my tree
Such a great reminder to not rely on "found" genealogies! They might be a good starting point (or not), but they should always be verified! A very good researcher had posted a genealogy which merged with my line and went back to the 1500's - it broke down my brick wall, or so I thought. Not long after that, she recalled the genealogy, stating she went the wrong way and the genealogy was all wrong. But by that time, it had been posted on other web sites and even printed in a book Even some of the DAR and SAR applications are questionable! BEWARE! Re: [LegacyUG] Unlinking part of my tree
June, I too had a "sick" branch on my tree with all kinds of errors - in this case mostly due to a guy named Gustave Anjou, a "professional" genealogist in the early half of the 1900 who "created" genealogies - several in my line and other genealogists had used his information for their own. So I don't know where the creativity/inaccuracies begin and what was truth. It was easier for me to just lop off the whole branch and start all over. Yes, DELETED about 1300 names starting with a great-grandmother and 8 generations with huge families of 12-16 kids who also had huge families. I'm starting with a clean mind and I am spending my time looking for original records instead of trying to figure out where my/his mistakes were or even whose family trees online are correct or not. There were several families who all had the same kids, same vital records but living in totally different places, sourcing on my part was far from very good anyway. Now I am working on accuracy as I go and I am not in a big rush to collect names. I want to leave an excellent, well sourced and accurate genealogy behind for my family. Why give them a bunch of junk? And if I don't get it ALL done, then they will get to have some of the fun of researching too. Good luck. Re: [LegacyUG] Unlinking part of my tree
Have you considered making a DB showing the details of each person? I have had similar problems and a DB helps sorth these things out>L:aura -Original Message- From: June Sent: Monday, March 21, 2016 8:49 PM To: 'Legacy User Group' Subject: [LegacyUG] Unlinking part of my tree On my tree I have a direct line that I will call SMITH. Unfortunately within this Smith group there are several called John (all born around the same time) several called Michael (all born around the same time) etc many of these being cousins or second cousins. I have a feeling that I have put the wrong children with parents, and therefore their children are connected incorrectly. I've tried to look at each family grouping to see if I can sort it out but it's difficult. I've got a John Smith born 1700 with son John Smith and another one born 1710 with a son John Smith and still another one born say 1705. I am thinking that my best bet would be to unlink the first Smith to link into my tree, thereby hopefully unlinking them all. Then start attaching them one by one back into the tree - but only when I have double checked that I have the right person (although I thought that I had). So I need to unlink my first Smith and all their connections, either by blood or marriage from my main Coates file. Is this possible and if so how. Or is there an easier solution? The Voice of Experience speaks: this is an *excellent* tip! I used to use tagging a lot because there was so much I wanted to amend/correct after I had been using Legacy a while and learned better ways of doing things. But I kept opening the program, looking a a group of people with a particular tag and not having a clue why they were tagged!
