Re: [LegacyUG] Sources in Assigned Sources View not showing entire source citation

2014-03-18 Thread Sherry/Support
It can be kind of hard to notice it sometimes since the Master Source,
ID numbers and Source Detail are all one paragraph.. I'm looking at
the Sample file and comparing the Output tab with the Source Detail
for Asa, and everything's showing in the Output tab.

If you continue to have a problem after running a File > File

Backup File), please contact supp...@legacyfamilytree.com or send in a
Problem Report Form so a tech can work with you on this.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources in Assigned Sources View not showing entire source citation

The detail doesn't show separately. It shows after the master source.

Don't forget, unless you have selected to "Include this citation on
reports", the detail won't show if you have selected "Show source using
print options" but it should show if you have selected "Show Entire Source"

Re: [LegacyUG] Maintenance - Regular

2014-03-15 Thread Sherry/Support
I hope you're backing up more than monthly. You should back up after
doing a lot of work in the file and before using any of the tools
which affect your file globally

Even if you're deleting one or two things, it's probably a good idea
to do a backup. We get emails from people who accidentally deleted
something and want to know how to get it back!

I'd toss in run Potential Problems Report but with the PP Indicators
now, that's not as important as it was. Otherwise the routine looks
pretty good to me.

The current residence is added using the Address icon. Consider that as
your current address book.

Historical residences are added using the Residence event. I enter the
street address in the Description field, date range in the date field and
city, county, state and country in the location field, with any notes about
this residence that you want to include.

I've been in and out of the Chronology all day starting with different
people and the report is always fine.

I don't know what can be going on with your file You could try
reinstalling Legacy and if that doesn't help, you probably should contact
Support.

I have sometimes seen a delay when switching files. The data from the old
file can hang around a couple of seconds and sometimes a delay when going
to another tab.

The other question would be what do you have running in the background?
Could that be slowing Legacy?

When was the last time you restarted your computer?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Update Notice and "Legacy Home tab".

2014-03-06 Thread Sherry/Support
Tab - think of the top of a file folder or the little thingy sticking out
on the side of the divider in a notebook. The tabs across the top are also
referred to as "views" - Legacy Home view, Family view, etc.

Button and Icon are pretty much interchangeable

You can select which tab/view opens when you open Legacy in Options >
Customize 1.1

There's a link to the website in the Support section of the Legacy Home
tab/view
. You can also get to the Legacy website through "Technical Support"
section in the Legacy Help Contents and there's extensive Help information
about getting update notifications under Update.

Oh - and the Legacy News has announced the update, both emailed to the LUG
list and in the Legacy Home tab. I wonder if that tab/view should be your
opening tab so you don't miss it???

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Update Procedure

2014-03-04 Thread Sherry/Support
There is no Legacy Home button. There's a Legacy Home tab but no button.

In earlier versions, there was a "Home" button on the far left of the
toolbar which took you to the Preferred Startup Family. A lot of
people were confused with the Legacy Home tab and the Home button when
we'd give instructions so Ken changed that button to the Startup
Family on the "My Toolbar" in v8.

It wouldn't go on the File ribbon since it has nothing to do with
Files but has to do with going to the Preferred Startup Family set in
Options > Customize 1.3 (You can also set the Startup Family by
clicking on the icon on the Options ribbon)

Re: [LegacyUG] Combining two files

What you first need to do is import one file into the other by going
to File > Import. *Then* you merge the duplicates. Before
importing, back up the file you're importing into (File > Backup File)

So look up "Import" first, then "Merge" (I can't give you specifics

Not all fonts are created equal. Some don't play by the rules!

One of our beta testers is a printer by trade and understands all the
font things and explained it to me a long time ago but I don't
remember all the details (I have it in an email someplace). I just
know it's a problem with some of the fonts.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering info in location field

2014-02-26 Thread Sherry/Support
Unless you enter them *consistently* as city/town, county, state, country,
you're going to confuse Legacy if you try to Sort locations in the Master
Location List, add/expand locations or even do the Census List search

It'll probably also confuse mapping.

A lot of people don't bother with those features in Legacy and enter all
sorts of things in the location field

It's my understanding that the preferred format for FamilySearch is "United
States"

Take a look at the Sample file for the way Geoff, our professionally
trained genealogist, does his locations

However if there are a few files (up to 10) that you use regularly, click
on the round "L" icon in the upper left corner (or the "System" tab,
depending on your selection for Design > Styles) to show the most recently
used files.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering Unknown People

2014-02-24 Thread Sherry/Support
To add to Michele's comment

If you leave any unknown information blank, you can take advantage of
the Search tab "Missing Information" and show underlines for missing
information in Ancestor and Descendant books.

Also, if you share FGR or other reports with other family members, if
the field is blank it quickly catches their eye and they have a place
to help update the information you're missing.

If anything is entered in a field, it won't be found as "Missing" in
the Missing Information search. Legacy is looking for an empty field.

Re: [LegacyUG] Event sentences

2014-02-14 Thread Sherry/Support
Yes.

If you want to save your usr files and color schemes, then you need to back
up those separately.

*However* most computer system backups will automatically back up
everything in the Documents folder so if you have a regular system backup
of your hard drive, as you should, whether you use Windows backup, a 3rd
party program or a cloud system such as Carbonite or Mozy, then
everything's most likely being backed up...

The usr files and color schemes should not be backed up with the Family
File since they're not part of the Family File.

The usr files are *not* backed up when you back up the Family File.
Only those files which show on the Customize Backup window are backed

Re: [LegacyUG] Keeping wrong data, just in case it's not

2014-02-11 Thread Sherry/Support
You can keep unlinked individuals and families in the main file. Or
you can copy them over to a new file for safe keeping and then delete
them from you main file.

I have a ton of files from different places, waiting to incorporate
the data when it's verified, as well as several unlinked
individuals/lines in my main file that I'm pretty sure connect
somewhere but don't know just yet.

Then all you have to do when you find where the person or line
connects, just add them to the right family using the "Link to

Crossover isn't free. It's the supported version of WINE and there's a

Re: [LegacyUG] Potential Problems indicator regarding birth gaps

2014-01-20 Thread Sherry/Support
Do an estimated birth date with est or bef as a date prefix.

A lot of baptisms are done on older children or adults. Sometimes the
date is applicable, esp if it's a christening (naming of child done
with sprinkling) shortly after birth) but many times it's not. My
baptism was nearly 30 years after I was born! A gap would certainly
show if the bap date was used, along with a "born after the death of
the mother" and a "too long after the marriage of the parents" flag!

over 300 suggestions come in

We've received thousands of suggestions over the years I've worked for
Legacy. Many of them have become part of Legacy.

I remember many of the suggestions that have crossed my desk. To be
honest, I don't recall that one coming in.

If you have more than one idea, please submit separate suggestion forms.

Re: [LegacyUG] Dates

2014-01-10 Thread Sherry/Support
I would use the date of the event, not the date it was registered. You
can enter the date it was registered in the Source Detail, depending
on the format you're using. It could be entered in the Text filed
under the Text/Comments tab.

The only time you would use a registration date is if you don't have
the actual date of the event, in which case you'd enter "bef 3 Dec"

Re: [LegacyUG] Attaching a picture

2014-01-08 Thread Sherry/Support
The Location Report can include Notes (Options tab).

Including pictures has been requested before and we're hoping that
when things settle down, we'll be able to include those as well.

I misspoke in my previous email. I thought location pictures could be
included in the index but guess not.

I would link a location picture to an associated event to include
those in reports.

Re: [LegacyUG] Alternate Names

2014-01-08 Thread Sherry/Support
You don't need to add alternate names for married women. Use the
"Married Names" feature on the Marriage Information window - set to
either don't generate married names or replace wife's surname with
husband's surname. Or you can get real creative and in the fields just
above the combo box, enter hyphenated names or whatever the couple
used for their married names (I have heard of men taking on the
woman's maiden name!)

Then in the Name List and Index view, click to show Married Names.

Also you can show married names in the Index of Reports.

Re: [LegacyUG] Attaching a picture

2014-01-06 Thread Sherry/Support
If you have added the caption, date and description to the Picture
List tab, then when you attach the picture, it should be showing on
the Attached Pics tab.

You have to add it to the Picture List tab *before* attaching the picture.

This sticks and goes along with attaching the picture every time
it's not at all convuluted!

I've just linked the same picture to several individuals and every
time the caption, date and description was "transferred" to the
Attached Pic and I was able to confirm that in the Media Gallery for
the individuals.

However... the data is stored in the PicList.dbm file which is in the
folder where the picture is stored. If you move the picture or rename
it, you will lose the data stored in that file.

If you move all pics in that folder to a new folder, then you need to
make sure you move the PicList.dbm file as well. If you move part of
the pics, there's no way to take the dbm file along with it.

The programmers are trying to think of a better way to store the data
to avoid this caveat

When you're in Picture Center, if you add the Caption< Date and

added when you link a picture.

If it's added to the "Attached Pics" tab, then it applies only to that

Re: [LegacyUG] can't open my family files

You have to allow the conversion to take place in order to view the file in v7.5

Go to our website www.LegacyFamilyTree.com > Download and in the
Frequently Asked Questions selection on the right you'll find a link
to earlier versions of Legacy (the current version is v8).

If you ever want to go back to a previous version of Legacy, you'll
have to create a gedcom in the version you're using and import that
gedcom into an earlier version.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 Upgrade and problems thereby

2014-01-04 Thread Sherry/Support
Alex,

There are instructions in the Knowledge Base on resolving the Language
file error

There are two different articles, depending on whether it refers to
Legacy7.LNG or Legacy8.LNG

Go to our website www.LegacyFamilyTree.com > Help Center >
Troubleshooting Help and just type in "language file" (without the
quotes) in the search box.

The instructions are different because the file that needs to be
removed is in a different folder in v7.5 and earlier than in v8
install.

I'm really surprised that more Legacy users don't take advantage of
the great Help information on our website!

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 Upgrade and problems thereby

2014-01-04 Thread Sherry/Support
Upgrade and update are two different things.

You update a current version through the Updates section on the Legacy Home tab.

You upgrade by downloading the newer version from our website. Once
the newer version is installed, again you'll install updates for that
version through the Legacy Home tab.

Re: [LegacyUG] Webinar suggestion

2014-01-03 Thread Sherry/Support
There was a webinar on the Families app back on Apr 11, which looks
like a free one where an archives membership isn't required.

Geoff has done several "Watch Geoff Live" webinars, which you can find
by sorting on "Presenters" on the Archived Webinars page. At least
some of them require a membership.

The webinars are at www.FamilyTreeWebinars.com

BTW, the "Legacy Family Tree - Unlocked" book is a compilation of the
"Watch Geoff Live" webinars in print form - updated for v8.

Re: [LegacyUG] File extensions

2014-01-03 Thread Sherry/Support
Gary,

If you go to the Help file in Legacy and look up "File extensions" you
can find a list of all the files used in Legacy.

Don't delete anything with your file name. Those files work with the
data in your Family File.

They have an older date because you may not have used the applicable
feature for awhile (RGD = Research Guidance, CAL = calculated
relationships, FG = focus group you've created)

In fact, we don't recommend that you delete *anything* in the Legacy
folders unless you *know* what it is (saved documents, etc) without
direction from Support.

We ask that all requests for support go through our tracking system so
we have a history for reference if the issue comes up again or if a
tech who is working with you is out for an extended time, another tech
can step in and help resolve the issue. Not to mention the hundreds of
emails we get to our personal email addresses for all the company
lists we're on - it's real easy to lose track of a customer's ticket
that's in our own email box!

We do not control who is in the list or who isn't unless they
"misbehaving" on the list, then we will remove that person. It's
*very* rare that we do that.

There is no "full" or "partial" access to the list. You're either on

The buttons are missing for the Text/Comments fields in the Master

They're showing in the Source Detail window for Text/Comments.

It helps when you indicate which build you have - you can find the

Another solution, which I thought of while reading your email, is to
empty your temporary internet cache. Each browser operates a little
differently on how it's done - generally under Tools > Options or
Tools > Internet Options. Then restart your computer to clear
everything out that may be hanging around in memory.

Jenny,

You might want to check your status on the Individual's Information
window If you ever accidentally entered info in a death field
then backed out, you need to remember to change the living status as
well.

Re: [LegacyUG] Same Sex Partnerships/Marriages

2013-12-26 Thread Sherry/Support
We are "keeping count" somewhat, but as Leonard wrote quoting Ken,
it's a major ripping apart of the basic design of Legacy and would be
very time consuming for the programmers. Not only would they have to
restructure Legacy, they would also have to re-code all the other
options based on the restructuring - not to mention the trickle-down
for all the add-on programs.

I don't know if you restart your computer regularly, but things get
hung up in memory and it needs to be "cleaned out" periodically by
restarting.

Just the simple act of restarting your computer can resolve a lot of
problems, even errors you get in Legacy.

Delete the one you renamed. It's useless.

I would recommend to everyone that when you get an error in Legacy, go
to our Help Center > Troubleshooting Help and look up the solution in
the KB.

If the error isn't there, contact Support.

Don't try to figure it out yourself and do something that can
complicate the issue and don't google the error on the web - most of
the time the solutions you find on the web don't apply at all to
Legacy.

Did you change the file name back in the c:\Program Files\Legacy8\ folder?

If you reinstalled per the instructions, then Legacy program added an
updated Legacy8.LNG file and the renamed file is now cluttering up
your _AppData folder.

We don't recommend messing with *anything* in the Legacy folder in
Program Files, or in *any* Program Files folder as far as that goes,
unless someone who understands the program install directs you to.

When you're working in Legacy, it's looking at the files in the

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy8 Language file error

2013-12-21 Thread Sherry/Support
The solution to this error is in our Knowledge Base
http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/

Just look up Legacy8.LNG in the search box. This article comes up:

"The language file Legacy8.LNG is the wrong version

1. Please go to your Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData folder and
delete the any files with the .LNG file extension.

2. Reinstall Legacy with the latest build from our website
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/downloadupdate.asp";

You can access the KB through our website at www.LegacyFamilyTree.com,
if you go to Help Center > Troubleshooting Help or through the link
Online Troubleshooting Help link in the Support section of the Legacy
Home tab.

This is something new that we just started and is great because you
can search on keywords to find the solution to your Legacy problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy v8 - Highlighted colour

2013-12-20 Thread Sherry/Support
I wonder if it has anything to do with Windows settings? I know that
our programmers don't have any control over the highlight color (sure
wish they could make it lighter!). On both my Vista laptop and my Win7
desktop, the letters turn white when the row is highlighted.

I tried several color schemes in Legacy and having the gender colored
red for females and blue for males and again, it's always white under
the highlight.

My favorite color scheme is Brown Gradient.

The only thing I can suggest is playing around with Legacy color
schemes and Windows color schemes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Collaborative Database - Google Drive

2013-12-20 Thread Sherry/Support
The file you're working on in Legacy needs to be on the computer.
Legacy can't find files on the internet.

I have Dropbox which places a Dropbox folder on the computer, and work
on the file in the folder, which then syncs with the file on the
server. I can access my file that way on both my desktop and laptop
and can share the folder with anyone I want to.

Everyone needs to make sure they keep Legacy updated and they all have
the same build number. Also we don't recommend that Legacy be used by
more than one person at a time - it's not a multi-user program.

Have you looked at IntelliShare for sharing research tasks? Details
are in the Help file for Legacy and on the Tips page on our website.

Re: [LegacyUG] Words in date fields

2013-12-20 Thread Sherry/Support
You guys can certainly "Unknown" or any other designation but I'm just
pointing out that when you enter anything but actual useful data in a
field, it leaves a couple of the great features in Legacy unusable.

I particularly love the "Missing Information" search to help me find what I
need to search on. Of course, you could do a detailed search on each field
for "unknown" but that seems like a lot of extra typing to me to enter that
therm and then do the Detailed Search when you can do one search with the
Missing Info tab.
