Hi

On the Individual's Information display, click on the Privacy Settings
button and then select the Invisible option. They will not be included in
reports or exports unless the settings for the report or export explicitly
include Invisible people, which you can control within the report settings..

I did find this link:

free list so you will need a subscription to view the whole thing.

That can get your started.

2019-09-14 Thread Valerie Garton
I think I have fixed the problem. I have been trying ad trying to delete
Legacy Charting to no avail but I have just managed to do so and there is
still the charting program so possibly the problem was that the program had
been added more than once. Here's hoping all is OK and continues to be so.

Sometimes Windows will "forget" to put a window in a visible area. It may be
hidden above, below or on either side of what you can see on your monitor.
That is what I meant. If, as I do, you have multiple monitors and one is not
turned on then Charting could be opening on that missing monitor, this is
another reason a window can open but not be visible.

Did you click on the Charting icon on your taskbar before you used
Alt-Spacebar (You have to hold both down at the same time)? Since that is a
standard Windows feature it should have done something.

I think that when you open Legacy Charting from within Legacy it starts with
a basic chart with just the person who was in focus in Legacy. You are then
asked about saving that chart when you close LC, even if you have not done
anything with it.

Why Legacy Charting does not open for you I don't know. What happens if you
right-click on the icon in your Taskbar?

Make sure that Charting is not opening off your visible monitor. Also try
clicking on the Charting Icon and then use ALT-Space bar to open a menu
which will let you maximize the charting window. That should bring the chart
to the front and to your active monitor in a full screen mode.

Alt-space bar will also give you the menu option to move the charting
screen, if that menu appears on an edge of your monitor the charting window
is open off to that side. Select Move and use the arrow keys to move the
charting screen toward the centre of your monitor. Press space to exit the
move when the chart window is positioned where you want.

When I go to shut down Legacy I am asked " do I want to save the chart " but

Correction: I meant to say MyHeritage Hints still not working.
FamilySearch and FindmyPast Hints are both fine.

In Legacy under the Legacy Home tab is Legacy News. The news item I see at
the top of the list is "Register for Webinar Wednesday: Research Your
Newfoundland Ancestors by Tessa Keough" which was posted on July 16, 2019.
I have tried the green refresh arrows but it doesn't update. On the website
there are numerous new News items right up to Tuesday's Tip - Options: Fonts
(Beginner) posted August 13, 2019.

Is this just happening to me or is it another symptom of continuing problems
at Legacy? MyHeritage Hints still doesn't work for me after more than 3
months. Any suggestions or hopeful news for either problem?

Cheers

Valerie,

You can use a Detailed Search. It depends whether you are wanting to find it in
an Event Place field or Event Description or Event Notes or all three.

Search > Find > Detailed Search
IndividualEvent-Place contains East Ealing OR Individual
Event-Description contains East Ealing OR Individual Event-Notes contains
 East Ealing

The crucial bit is to use Contains for How to look Whether you need all 3
conditions depends on where you think it is. Also note the OR between the
various conditions.

You could try searching on your computer for a .ged file. It depends what
your default is set up as to where the files are saved on your computer.
You could also try looking up ancestry.ged and see if that brings anything
up.

I am wanting to sort some questions out which I have asked before but after
more than 17 minutes I cannot find those helpful replies.

I downloaded I thought a gedcom file from ancestry and then STUPIDLY deleted
that file from ancestry. Now I think it is a Chrome File. Anyway let's
forget that.

I think things are in a mess and I hope to sort all this out TODAY.

1. Where should my .ged files be kept on my computer and where is that ?

2. Where should my Legacy files be kept on my computer

I am not sure what is where - obviously

Hi Valerie

Exactly what do you mean by a GEDCOM file coming as a word document

1. Are these files which you have been sent

2. Are they files that you have downloaded and where from

3. Are they files that you have created

Why do you think that they are word documents? Is the file name .ged?

How are you trying to open them? Per se, there is no default program defined in
Windows to open these files.

Normally, one would use a text editor - Notepad or Notepad++ - to view these
files.

Otherwise one would use a genealogy program like Legacy to IMPORT the file and
convert it to its own file format.

Can you please let us know exactly what is happening, why and where the files
are and what are you trying to do with them.

Regards

Chris

Hi Valerie,

1. The number of 'duplicates' has increased, because those merges you've done
have enabled Legacy to see more people who might be duplicates, and have added
them to the list for you to consider.

3. The total number of people has decreased (2594 + 2540 = 5134) because you
have made some merges already.

Hope this helps. :-)

" the number of merges still to be done have gone from 69 dulicates to 479.
WHY ??

2. Also I can see that one of the problems is age at death so I want to not use
this criteria anymore but I cannot get back into the beginning settings to
delete this age at death problem

3. I now have 4945 people

I do not think that you can download a csv file from Ancestry. Just
giving a file a name like filename.csv does not change the content. if
you downloaded a file from Ancestry it is probably a GEDCOM file which
is the standard format for genealogical files.

Rename the file to filename.ged
Open Legacy and use file > Import > GEDCOM file
when you have finished the import from filename.ged
Go to View > Name List
Click Options > Print
Now you will be able to define up to three rows of data you can include
for each person.
Select CSV file in the lower right
The print box in the upper right will change to Create
Click create
In the dialog box select the folder where you want to save the file and
assign a file name
Click save
Remember where you saved that file
Open Excel then open the file you exported from legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] csv FILE

2018-09-15 Thread Valerie Garton
Been on the phone to Microsoft yesterday waiting for over 6.25 hours when
the phone rang out of batttery. Been on the phone again now for 37 minutes.
What I have done is: Open an excel file, select the file I want to open and
try to open this when the excel page then goes blue with no grid. Would it
be OK for me to ring you please ?

What error messages or other indications do you get from Excel when you try
to open the Legacy created .csv file.

Hi Valerie

If you are talking about your databases, pick the one you use or update
most. Put it in a new Legacy database with a new name so you can distinguish
it from the old one. Then you will have to do as you thought and get the
information from the online trees one at a time and merge them.

To prevent all this happening again, I suggest you only work on or update
the one on your Legacy file on the computer. If you wish to put them online
do it from your master database. Don't change or add anything anywhere else.

Everyone needs to be aware that MyHeritage subscriptions renew without warning.
You actually agree when you subscribe but it's easily overlooked.
They could do a lot to change people's perception if they gave a warning when a
subscription was due for renewal as Ancestry does.

At least now they appear to refund when people complain.

In MyHeritage if you go to the My Purchases and click to see details, you can
click to Stop annual renewal. I look for this type of setting on any website I
pay a sub to these days and uncheck auto-renewal if I'm unsure whether or not I
will want to renew. I also set an alert for 2-4 weeks beforehand so that a) I
can review whether I want to renew and b) if I'm not going to renew I can
prioritise using the site while I have access. I've used various programs to do
this but am discovering that Windows 10 in built Reminder system works well.

Jean,

I use an obituary event as I like the transcribed obit to be included in
reports where events and notes are allowed.

I edited my event definition sentences to read differently, depending on how
much source information I know.

For instance, if I know the date and location of the publication, my
obituary event in my report might begin with the sentence:

... Jack was remembered in an obituary, published 15 Oct 2003, in Danville,
Yell County,
Arkansas

And the obituary transcription follows

... [FirstName] was remembered in an obituary, published [onDate], in
[Place][Sources][CR][CR][Notes][CR]

Occasionally, I come across a newspaper clipping of an obituary that someone
has shared but they don't include source information, so I've no idea what
newspaper printed the obituary. In this instance, my beginning obituary
event sentence reads:

... he (or she or first name) was remembered in an obituary.

And the obituary transcription follows

... [HeShe] was remembered in an
obituary[Sources][CR][CR][Notes][CR]

In all instances, I bold this first sentence, which helps to set it off in
the report.

I don't add the transcription of the obituary to the source detail since it
is included in the report.

I am having a hard time deciding where or how to enter obituaries. Years
ago I started putting them on the bottom half of the medical notes. Then I
moved to burial notes, along with FAG info. When Geoff or someone mentioned
putting obits as an event, so you could make a report of all people who had
obit, I started putting them as events, which I still do. Now I am working
on sourcing them (I do not use sourcewriter) and have entered some in the
detail of the source. I am confused. What is the best way of entering
obits, so you can have them appear on reports? Is there a webinar
specifically covering this? Thanks for suggestions.

Valerie,

Set relationships to yourself and then go to Reports - Other Reports -
Relationship report.
If you want the list sorted by relationship then save to a CSV and then open in
a spreadsheet and sort there.
Note in the latest update to Legacy 9 you can choose to just include blood
relationships in this report.

Yes, just go to that person then run the Set Relationships using him/her as
the starting person. Then the Relationship report will include the
relationships of people in the file to that person. To reset yourself as the
starting person you will have to go to yourself then redo the Set
relationships.

There's a suggestion officially logged to make this easier.

For now you Set Relationships to the right person at Tools - Set Relationships
then go to Reports - Other Reports - Relationship Report and create as a csv.
Open in a spreadsheet and then sort the relationship column.

I have an unusual question. My father was born in 1918 (I have his birth
certificate, and mutiple corroborations of this). He appears with his family
on the 1930 and 1940 census, but is not listed on the 1920 census. His parents
are there, as well as his older brothers.

My thoughts about how to handle this are to make an event for the 1920 census
(that is how I handle all the census reports) and note that he is not listed on
it, though parents and older siblings are.

Is there a better way to note this apparent error?

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Is this a proper gedcom file

GEDCOM files are plain text, so you can open them in any word processor or
notepad program, such as Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Writer, or Windows
Notepad.

The first few lines will look something like this one, which I created from
Legacy:

0 HEAD
1 SOUR Legacy
2 VERS 9.0
2 NAME Legacy (R)
2 CORP Millennia Corp.
3 ADDR PO Box 9410
4 CONT Surprise, AZ 85374
1 DEST Legacy
1 DATE 20 Jun 2017

You'll be able to see people's names and other text displayed in various
lines, along with other lines that will seem to be gobbledegook but contain
information that relates to the people named.

1 NAME William /Hargreaves/
2 GIVN William
2 SURN Hargreaves
2 SOUR @S3@

So if you can open this .ged file you've been sent in an appropriate program
and see similar lines, you have a GEDCOM file, which you should be able to
IMPORT into Legacy.

It's good practice to import files like this into a new Legacy file before
merging the data with your existing file.  You may want to look at things
like Locations, and tidy them up to the way you record them before taking
the data further.

Hope this helps.  :-)

Valerie,

You aren't supposed to include attachments on this list. I suggest you join the
Facebook Legacy User Group where you can post screenshots.
Note when joining Facebook you don't have to friend people and you can make
your privacy and security settings so tight that no-one can find you - and just
join groups.

Your screenshot isn't helpful as you don't say what you are printing. I presume
a report but which one?

Guessing a book report - so see the Page Layout tab for indents - again
guessing it's the indent that is bothering you.
