[LegacyUG] No way to search

2012-09-23 Thread sarlesinsight
I must be missing something. I click on search and get Find. I click on
that but I do not get a box in which to enter what I am searching for. I
just downloaded the latest version.

I am looking for any person who has any entry for Clay County, IL. My
Master Location list finds some, but I must have messed up entering the
locations because I cannot get it to sort by State. When I ask it to do
so, it still is sorted by County name.

I feel like I started with Legacy yesterday, instead of year ago.

Re: Re: [LegacyUG] All children don't print

2012-07-20 Thread sarlesinsight
Actually, I went away from the computer for a few hours, and when I
returned the printing problem was mysteriously solved. I guess the font
problem is, too, since I didn't get a bad message box.

I did figure out the problem with only 2 children showing in the FGS. There
were a number of blank pages in the report and I thought that the page
before the blanks was the final page. It wasn't - it resumed after 3 blank
pages. I unchecked starting a new page after each child and that (along
with some tinkering with the 2nd child's info) took care of the problem.

Thanks to all.

rather than you /want/ them done!

Do you have death dates for any of the children missing even though

they shouldn't be still living? I had a number of entries missing

from a report one time and in every case there was no death date.

Each one had only a name and nothing else even though they would have

 been 120-150 years old! I don't mark any as suppress/show as living/

The Legacy7 Help file has several items under Privacy and Private that

You have to scan the document and create an image. You then open the

image in transcript. Use ctrl+alt+O to open the image file.

If you are transcribing a census or something similar with fixed fields

then Genescriber is a better choice. (free, just Google it)

[LegacyUG] Legacy disappeared

2012-06-22 Thread sarlesinsight
When will I learn to leave things alone? I did the Check for an update
thing, it began to download and update my Legacy then I got a message,
something about the language, and Legacy disappeared. It says I should
download and reinstall. I had the deluxe version. Do I really have to go to
the web site and download all over again? Will my data be there? Am I
cooked for good?

Re: Re: [LegacyUG] Using color

2012-06-21 Thread sarlesinsight
I tried putting probable parent in the title space, but, when I do an
individual report of the parent, their name is given as Probabl parent
Margaret McKinney. That won't do. Am I missing something?

This doesn't seem like rocket science. Why can't we have a way to designate
a special condition of a person? Surety is not the answer for this, since
it isn't displayed on the family screen, nor in basic report facts. Color
would be the best way I would guess.

I think the only thing you can do for an at a glance solution is to

add something like (Unproven) or (Possibly) to one of the fields on

the Individual's Information screen. If you choose to do this, I would

suggest that Title Suffix is the most suitable place for it.

(Personally, I never use the Title fields, on the grounds that none of

my relatives are born with titles. I might do so if I had some Princes

 or Honourables among my forbears!)

[LegacyUG] Location list puzzle

I wish to develop a list of all those direct ancestors and their children
who have any event located in Kentucky. I have wrestled with search,
with report definitions, with the Location Master List, but for the life
of me I can't see my way clear to do such a list. Actually what I need is
Family Group reports for all those ancestors who have any event happen in
Kentucky.

Seems pretty basic, but I am going to need baby steps toward this end. Can
anyone set me on the right pathway to achieve this?

 Subject: [LegacyUG] Location list puzzle

I wish to develop a list of all those direct ancestors and their children
who have any event located in Kentucky. I have wrestled with search,
with report definitions, with the Location Master List, but for the
life of me I can't see my way clear to do such a list. Actually what I
need is Family Group reports for all those ancestors who have any event
 happen in Kentucky.

Seems pretty basic, but I am going to need baby steps toward this end.
Can anyone set me on the right pathway to achieve this?

Hi, all. This may sound silly, but I'm about to get serious about doing
my genealogy research. (!) Wanted to double-check some things with you.

Based on the posts I've read here, I believe most of you have moved from
using the Individual's Research Notes field to using the To-Do List for
your research notes... right? You record the results of the research on
that tab, close the item, and then open new To-Do items based on those
results. These results would be both positive and negative.

Am I missing anything? Have you found any issues in reporting the Results
later? Like, much later after you may have forgotten your process in
 reaching a conclusion?

Do you do most of your To-Do items by Individual? The last time I did
something by Repository, I used a search list and printed a report. (It
was a cemetery.) I don't see how using a To-Do item would be easier... am
I missing something? Case in point: the 1940 Census. Is anyone using
To-Do items, or opting for the new tool instead?

 Thanks,

Re: Re: [LegacyUG] Direct Line Descendant Report

2012-03-27 Thread sarlesinsight
Sherry,

What you want is what I have asked for from Legacy, but never gotten. I
often need a report that gives detail information about each person of a
direct line from person A to ancestor B . It appears there is no such
report in Legacy. I also find the multi-step tagging and exporting to a
whole new file too daunting. Other genealogy programs call it a Direct
Line Ahnentafel (pardon the spelling!). Can't figure out why Legacy, that
has so much for creative work, cannot incorporate this type report.

It adds United States to some of the entries. Some, such as Guilford Co.,
NC or , , , Alabama or , , Fluvanna County, Virginia, it does nothing at

[LegacyUG] Family Search Legacy

2012-03-22 Thread sarlesinsight
Whenever I think I have mastered something about Legacy, I find it only
shows me something else I have to learn. Going to the Family Search site

I did search the archives and found how to get Family Search accessed by a

I suspected something like that. So, the total is 4 places and if you have
the state and the country, you need two commas, with 1 space between.

Thanks.

 Jane,

The Expand/Contract locations insists that the format be four levels

 city, county, state, country

If any part is missing that part must be replaced with a comma

Your examples below are correct but you should also use

city, , state, country if the county is missing and

city, , , country if the county and state are missing.

The country can be missing without a replacement comma and, if the

location is in the United states Legacy will recognize the state name

and know that the place is in the USA.

In your earlier email the problem places were not in the correct format

Guilford Co., NC was missing the comma for the missing city

, , , Alabama has too many commas before the state name

, , Fluvanna County, Virginia, also has too many commas before the

county there should only be one.

[LegacyUG] Location quandaries

2012-03-21 Thread sarlesinsight
If I have a probable location, how do others input such a thing? Example:
(probable) , Warren County, North Carolina, USA?

Also, I have a single period at the head of my Master Location List and
cannot seem to get rid of it. When I try, I get a message saying that no
one is using the location.

I started out doing my own thing with inputting locations, and now wish to
make it consistent with Geoff's recommendations as to town, county, state,
and country. (Wonder about where to put township - in place of town?)

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to correct all those entries in
efficient fashion? Or must I do one at a time and finish sometime next year?

Re: Re: [LegacyUG] Print maternal lineage

2012-02-24 Thread sarlesinsight
Paula, What you have asked for sounds like what I have requested before. I
need a report that shows a line between me and the oldest ancestor in a
particular line. When I do a report for my family, I wish to show each
direct line from me (or them, as the case may be) back as far as I can go.
The Master Genealogy had that, called a Direct Line Ahnentafel. I used it
often and it has been the only thing I have missed with Legacy.

I had submitted a suggestion on a flexible lineage report that run
between any two people (rather than just starting at one person and going
 up their male ancestor line).
I did not however specifically ask for the siblings of the females.
Or I guess in the context of my suggestion, it would be to show the
siblings of both partners right? Hmm, that would be a bit harder.

Re: Re: [LegacyUG] What name to use?

2012-02-16 Thread sarlesinsight
The person I am adding is in a county history chapter on a known ancestor
that mentions that his father came to Westchester County, NY in the late
1600's. Apparently the book's author did not know the given name of the
father, so he is not named, other than father, but the fact and time of
his coming is important enough to include him in my data.

Jane

On , Jerry jerrysemailgro...@gmail.com wrote:

Here's my thinking on it, Paula, trying to explain as briefly as
possible. Quite often when you go to a genealogy website, the first
thing you do is pull up the master person list to check for your
possible ancestors. On many websites (if not most), you will see
the very top of the list will begin with those that ONLY have first
names like a bunch of Andrews, Sarahs, Williams, the word UNKNOWN
that lots of people use, etc.Â

The FIRST NAME ONLYs are generally at the very top of the index and
they basically tell you nothing meaningful unless there are also
columns for the spouse or parents. So, I wanted to provide a
possible eye-catching list that always has a FIRST NAME and a
SURNAME. Neither of them are ever blank because I use as much
information as I have to describe the missing pieces of the puzzle.Â
Whether it will eventually work to get people to respond with the
right information, we are not sure yet, but at least it looks more
organized and is easier to go through our list. I have at least
enough information to know that a complete father or mother, sister
or brother's name is missing or, of course, I would leave it
 completely blank.Â

With that type of system, I can easily filter a list of all my
unknown names because a ? always appears in the FIRSTNAME field.Â
You can get a better idea of what I mean by going to our website
(username = FullGuest and password = merriam), and sorting on
contains ? for the FIRSTNAME field. It depends on what is missing
as to where the ? appears, but if the Given Name is missing we use
Given Name ? and if the entire name is missing we use Name ?, etc. Â
I know the purists on here think that is horrible, but I'm trying to
use the computer database in the most organized way I can with the
information I have. I hope that makes a little bit of sense anyway.

 Sincerely,

 Jerry Boor - MerriamFamilyTree.org

I should like to see a time line of the formation of Tennessee counties by
year. Similar to the one for Kentucky counties that is now in the timelines
list. An example of this is at this website:

I would like to be able to incorporate the list into the chronological view

nice, too.

This is why I am trying to correct my location master list. I want it to do
the things it will do if it is correct. I do not understand the location
name parts statements. If I am trying to get everything in my list to fit
with what Legacy recommends, is there one of these I should check? Do you
have a suggestion for doing a global correction, or would you say I must do
it item by item?

In the upper left of the expand/contract location parts screen you have

to tell Legacy what action to take. The default is to expand the long

location name parts and contract the short location name parts. Also

check which records are to be affected. The default is all locations but

if only tagged locations were selected and no locations were tagged

there would be no changes made.

This is one of the areas in Legacy where adherence to the four levels of

locations is needed. Do you have the address portion of your locations

separated from the city by a comma? If so then Legacy may not have been

able to identify the state and country level since your levels would be

address, city, county, state, country instead of city, county, state,

 country.

I would like to have the location list so that it will operate as it is
supposed as regards sorting, data input automatically (in which first few

Examples of what I have now:

[LegacyUG] Request for addition to Legacy

2011-10-22 Thread sarlesinsight
I am probably the only one in the world who has a problem with this, but I
am going to request a feature for Legacy. I have any number of notes in my
genealogy collection that say, for example: Burwinkle Hendershot's father
was Flabius Hendershot and his mother was Sarah Jones. They are from Maine
and died in Nevada. (or some such thing). Now this may be true, and I would
like to include it in my data in a fairly prominent place, but do not want
to put Flabius in as the father without further proof. There may be several
candidates for parents, depending on which researcher's work you are
looking at. I know I can put in the Notes section, and I now do, but that
gets easily overlooked unless I print out a full report that includes notes.

My request is this: Could there not be a category (such as unlinked
under Add) such as - Parent Candidate. For those instances where the
parent is not known, I may have several possibilities and I should like my
report to print out Burwinkle's father is said by researcher Smith to be
Flabius Hendershot of Maine and his wife, Sarah Jones. Another candidate
for Burwinkle's father is ... and so on. I should like to be able to
see all of Burwinkle's prospective fathers on some screen, perhaps Family,
perhaps Chronological.

No doubt there are myriad problems with this that I haven't thought of or
considered, and a new feature isn't going to be added because of one vote,
but count me as voting for this one.

[LegacyUG] Master Location list

2011-10-22 Thread sarlesinsight
Feeling energetic, I began on a project of getting my Master Location list
in good order. The 2nd entry was (for some odd reason unknown to
me) Richard of Chapel Hill. It was given as being on the data of Richard
Ratcliff. I spend 20 minutes finding which Richard and which event had the
offending designation. I removed it. I restarted Legacy. Still there. I
have searched high and low for any other use of the term, but to no avail.
Must it be there forever?

[LegacyUG] MRIN info

2011-10-14 Thread sarlesinsight
I know this is pretty basic stuff, but I guess there is a lot of basic I
don't know. I am assuming the 3 numbers at the bottom of the family screen

marriage information, the program assigns an MRIN number. I am revamping my

Thank you Ron. I saw a web program (what they are called escapes me at the
moment) with a lady who discussed the filing system. However, hers made
numerical sense, children's number could be related to their parents. My
numbers seem to have been assigned in the order in which I entered them. I

Actually, if you produce an html, you can copy, import into WORD, and have
much better results than using RTF.

The major problems with this, especially if you are a pedant:

Some major problems, some of which are because of the grammatically
ignorant Legacy programmers (why can't they use correct grammar?):

Sentences are separated by only one space, rather than the grammatically
 correct two spaces.

Colons are followed by only one space, rather than the grammatically
 correct two spaces.

Books must be double bracket coded to show correctly as underlined.

Legacy coding for italicizing does not work.

There are others, too, but those are the few that come to mind.

Once in WORD, Find and Replace make many corrections easy, and those
corrections are MUCH easier when pasted from the html than from RTF!

I know there are some who edit and update
 the generated reports
quite extensively, and RTF is the only option
 for that.

 Hope that helps.

[LegacyUG] Duplicates in Report

2011-06-01 Thread sarlesinsight
Since I got no responses about my problem with people being duplicated in a
descendant narrative report, I think I have learned a lesson that is worth
sharing. For the second time I have wasted lots of time trying to solve a
problem in the Report Option screen. Both times I learned that the problem
was not in the report choices, but in my data. This time, I finally got
smart and went back to my basic data. There were two wives given (through
my own stupid error) for the father of the guys that were duplicated.

The moral is: The first step in solving a problem with having things appear
the way you wish them to is to GO BACK TO THE DATA on the Family screen
and look for an anomaly or an mistake. Let's hope I remember my own advice.

[LegacyUG] Report repetitions

2011-05-31 Thread sarlesinsight
I am trying to do a descendant report for a relative to take to a reunion,
but I am having a dickens of a time. I have one man, his children (4). Two
of the children have several paragraphs of information. For some reason,
the two are given after the father, and are repeated again with all the
information close to the end of the report. I cannot figure out why. I hope
this is a clear enough explanation of the problem.

Anyone have any answers?

Re: Re: [LegacyUG] Report repetitions

2011-05-31 Thread sarlesinsight
Jenny,

I do not see Include main entries in the report options tab.

I can understand including a list of children and then later giving each
one's details, but there is no list of the children, but the first son with
all his events and notes are included immediately after the parents' and
then all the events and notes are repeated again after the events and notes
of all the other children and descendants. It is a Descendant narrative
report.

Unless I am misunderstanding you, this sounds right to me. You get the

the children in turn as the 2nd generation etc.

What have you got selected in Include main entries for on the Report

I think I found that problem. It was with the William Bridges, an ancestor

RTF copy of an ancestry report of my son. For some reason, I get only about
1/4 of the pages there should be. It stops after 40+ pages - not nearly all
I have in my data base.

[LegacyUG] Report one problem after another

2011-05-13 Thread sarlesinsight
OK, I got the report set up like I wished and got the Warning box thing
taken care of. Now I wish to do my report in RTF so that I can do some fine
tuning on it. It will come out just fine in PDF or Printer, but only prints
about 50 pages in RTF, then quits. It asks me if I want to view it and when
I say yes it says Error 53. Then when I view it I find it is incomplete.

This is for my son's birthday Sunday. It looks like I am going to have to
work straight through the night to get it right.

I tried the Relationship report. It doesn't give me the ancestors, line by
line. It is just a list of all people in the data base and their
relationship to me. I want something like the book report gives, but only
for a particular line. In other words, an ancestor report that goes from my
son to a particular ancestor. The book that I am trying to make show direct
lineage of my son back to the first ancestor of each line, with full
information on each generation of that line. but separate for all lines. It
isn't easy to explain.

I suspect it just isn't possible.

Thanks for your response.

This is what I am thinking too. I can't see the letters as a marriage event
for the father, who was long dead before they were written and isn't
mentioned or referred to at all. I just think we need a more general
category for stuff that pertains to the family in general. I guess I think
in pretty simplistic terms.

Well, you don't have to assign things only to one family member. You

can add the same Event/Source to several people. You can also, as

someone else said, add an Event to the Marriage, which means you will

not have a lot of repetition.

I sometimes think that Marriage Events might better be termed as Family

Events and then people might be more inclined to think of them in that

way. Up to now I have duplicated nearly all Events which relate to a

husband and wife (and possibly children) by entering them for each

Individual, but now I think I could make quite a good case for entering

most post-marriage Events as Marriage/Family Events. The main objection

to that is that without some program changes by Legacy you would not get

all the post-marriage Events on an Individual Report.

Re: Re: [LegacyUG] Placement of file

So...if you have a letter that has information about several siblings,
you put it as a source for only one?

 Jane,

For clarity, Legacy does not put the image in anyone's file when it is

attached to multiple individuals, it only adds the path of the image to
 each

person's file. So if your concern was regarding memory then forget it!

I only use items such as you describe as sources, and thus attach them to

the source of an event contained in the letter(s) which is relevant to the

individual. There's nothing to stop you doing it your way, and many do,
 I'm

 simply saying that I wouldn't.

 Subject: [LegacyUG] Placement of file

I have 5 letters scanned that relate to one of my families. I don't want
 to

put each scan into any one of the siblings file because they have family

information that relate to other members as well. I don't know the
 siblings

father's name, but i have him in as Mr. Mayo, so that I can get his

 children in as a family.

I put the letters in his record as Mayo Correspondence

Can anyone suggest a better place for scanned information that relates to

 the family at large?

[LegacyUG] Caution about installing V. 7.5

2011-01-18 Thread sarlesinsight
You may want to wait on installing the new version. I have already had two
problems;

Cannot get printer set up done. It won't allow.

Cannot open the events screen for anyone.

[LegacyUG] Search Replace problem

2011-01-16 Thread sarlesinsight
I am trying to replace Van cleave with Van Cleave. I have done Search
and Replace 3 times but it comes up with 0 replacements. What can I be
doing wrong? I also tried replacing cleave with Cleave, but that didn't
work either. The Case Sensitive is checked.

[LegacyUG] Problem with locking up

2010-03-09 Thread sarlesinsight
I have recently had problems with Legacy locking up, primarily when I am
working in the Index view, I think. Has anyone else had this problem? I
have to end task and restart, and that gets cumbersome.
