Edward, my only suggestion to the video you just made is:
Please make more!!

Perhaphs I already forgot what being a Leo Noob is all about, but I would
say you dont need to make any "more noob friendly" videos, in my opinion
this video is so straight forward a newbie will also understand whats
happening (and learn quite fast too btw).
I love the hotkeys being shown!! Is that camstasia or an aditional
software??

About two of your most recent posts: Thank you for those photos, specially
the quotes ones, very good.
About the "vim AHA", I tried to understand what was happening there, but
could not. I would love to find some day a "leo vim video" to illustrate
what all that excitement means :)

Thanks for this video!

I like this a lot. It sheds light on how you use clones. Clever.

The presentation was crisp and clear. I like the visual hotkeys.

Thanks! However, I think newbies should be shown at least the following:

- How to use the minibuffer.
- How to find and change text.
- How to create external files from @file.
- How to create documents with @rst.
- The parts of the Leo screen.

It's Camtasia. A *great* program for Windows. It's dead easy to add
callouts like hotkeys and the cool animated box around the log pane.

Well, those were middle-of-the-night notes to myself. You weren't
expected to understand ;-)

The screencast will happen as soon as vim mode works. Maybe this week!
There is surprisingly little to do. One of the "preliminary Aha's" was
that vim mode can borrow tons of user-interface stuff *and* code from Leo.

The central vim Aha is that we can have per-pane key-binding in vim mode,
just as in the rest of Leo. Lots of implementation ideas clouded this fact.

For example, in vim mode j can mean next-line when focus is in the body
pane, *and* it can mean "select-next-visible' when focus is in the tree.
That's huge: it *doubles* the space of possibilities for vim-like
keystrokes. I should have seen it ages ago.

The second vim aha is that we can (must!) bind vim key sequences to plain
Leo commands. This opens up *all* Leo commands to vim's dot command. It's
big.

Furthermore, one can imagine some vim key sequence that drops into the
minibuffer *and* remembers the result as part of the dot. This will be
easy to do.

In short, we can easily imagine that Leo's vim mode will be substantially
more powerful and flexible than vim itself.

For consistency, we may want to have many bindings mean the same thing in
both the body pane and the outline pane, but that's optional.

Best of all, each of us can play with possibilities merely by changing the
@data nodes for vim mode.

This was one of the best screencasts I've ever seen. You told us in the
beginning what you were going to do. Then you did it. You explained
what you were doing clearly. The hotkey pictures were a spectacular
help. My general reactions to the video were:

1) After viewing it, I had little doubt that I knew how to do what you
   did.
2) After viewing it, I had a much more positive attitude toward Leo.

My one question is this: During the screencast, you didn't actually
change anything within expand_text, which was a subcomponent of the
node of leoEditCommands.py. If you *had* changed anything in
expand_text, wouldn't the log screen have shown that leoEditCommands.py
was changed?

You asked a month ago what could make Leo more universally popular.
Screencasts like this are exactly what is needed. It teaches, and it's
also a dog and pony show displaying Leo's strengths.

Definitely helpful for showing an action was being performed, but I
actually found the hotkey pictures confusing since many don't match
default Leo settings.

By default, delete-node doesn't have a binding. The plain left arrow
key doesn't promote nodes and Shift-Right doesn't demote nodes.

But for showing what is possible, the video was very good.

Yes, the log would show that leoEditCommands was changed, the *first* time
I did a save. But then, after that save, nothing would have changed when I
deleted the clones.

I'm going to charge ahead with more tutorials, but given how easy it is to
do them, it will be worthwhile fixing this and similar issues.

For example there are two problems with the minibuffer screencast. The
first, as has been pointed out, is that I neglected to scramble the text
after the first take. Mistakes like this require a full re-take.

The second problem, is that I struggled with a few words. I minimized the
problems by editing the sound track, but doing a retake of the offending
audio would have produced a better result.

I mention this because using Camtasia is so easy that it should be easy to
create a script as I go. After one or two takes, all that is left is to
retake less-than-perfect audio, and then splice the new audio in.

This depends on audio levels, so it's best done immediately.

Anyway, I'm thrilled that you approve, and also thrilled that making
screencasts is so easy. I'm naturally drawn to teaching people about Leo,
and screencasts are, by far, the best way.

Hmm. I didn't delete the node, I cut it. I did the promote and demote

operations "by hand", using the shift-arrow keys. I think this would be
more confusing for Leonistas than for newbies.

In any case, all the binding were, in fact, standard.

Yes, describing it as deleting is what confused me...I didn't know
about the Ctrl-Shift-X as cut keybinding. Thanks for clearing that up.

At about the 40-45 second mark, the video clearly shows plain left
arrow while you are promoting. There are 2-3 other instances of the
same.

About the Shift-Right...I thought I checked default Leo and didn't
find that binding (I was unaware of the shift-arrow bindings), but I
guess I fooled myself.

Strange that the Shift-Right shows up fine (see around the 2:54 mark),
but the Shift-Left does not.

I'm actually considering a tutorial about Leo's arrow keys. There are
some subtleties that are worth knowing. For instance, Alt-any-arrow will
move focus to the outline pane. Once focus is there, you can select nodes
with *plain* arrow keys, and move them with shift-arrow keys instead of
alt-shift-arrow keys.

Strange that the Shift-Right shows up fine (see around the 2:54 mark),
> but the Shift-Left does not.

Not strange at all. I failed to enter the proper key. Camtasia has no
clue about what keys were ever pressed: it only has the audio and video
tracks.

This and the other mistakes have been fixed:
http://www.screencast.com/t/l8W9H5G8zB

The title is UsingClones(revised).

Most changes were clearly good: I regularized the sizes of the key
callouts, added a callout to show the initial clone, and changed the
oh-so-confusing plain-arrow key callouts to shift-arrow callouts.

I also added text corrections for my misstatements about deleting nodes,
demoting nodes and dragging nodes. But these seem dubious. They may be
technically correct, but they are distracting. I prefer the presentation
without them.

What do you think? It would be trivial to delete them, but of course that
is also confusing.

The only way to correct the misstatements smoothly would be to patch in
audio corrections. That's fairly tricky. I would prefer to put that off
until all the important tutorials are finished.

In menus I'm a huge fan of the key binding being shown along with the menu
name, "Open File [Ctrl-O]" (though it can be nice to have the shortcut in a
lighter coloured text or otherwise de-emphasized). I wonder if something
similar can be done for the screencasts, but reversed and using the
mini-buffer command instead of menu name: "[Ctrl-Shift-X] cut-node". To
avoid visual clutter, the mini-buf cmd could be in a different part of the
screen, and much smaller. Bottom right might be a good location.

It would simply be a text callout.

However, I think screencasts should be as simple as possible.

There is some famous research (by recently deceased Clifford Nass,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clifford_Nass) that shows that we humans are
far less adept at multi-tasking than we think. I really don't want to
distract attention from the main message.

A future screencast will be about getting help. This will include the
print-bindings, print-commands and print-settings commands, as well as the
help commands. In particular, the print-bindings command gives you all the
binding/command associations, sorted by binding.

I think such a screencast should mention the docs on leoeditor.org, as
well as the helpful folks on this list and in #leo on freenode. :)
