[LIB] OT: Anyone tried 40GB Toshiba drive (MK4018GAP) in Sony VAIO? Anyone?

Disclaimer/Qualifications: I'm currently running two L50s and I'm happy with their 6GB and 4GB drives, so I'm a bona fide Libretteer. But this e-mail is about my Sony Picturebook PCG-C1VPK (US version released around June 2001). I'm writing to the Libretto list because it is full of such good guys with diverse experience. Has anyone used this Toshiba hard drive (MK4018GAP) in a VAIO PCG-C1VPK? I'd like to put a big drive in there, but I don't want compatibility issues (of course). Win95 CD (not original) Camcorder battery (see fixup.net for instructions on how it was adapted for the L50) Standard battery Extended Battery Sony PCMCIA CD-ROM drive (which works with RedHat 7.1 installer!!!) 28.8 faxmodem (hey, it's better than nothing) Original 810MB hard drive (removed, of course) And he threw in a 2.5"->3.5" hard drive adapter for $10 so I can easiliy install Linux from a "big" computer and then pop the drive back in the Libretto. I'm extremely happy with the deal. I figure I could part it out and get $500 for everything. Not bad. I tried to get several people at work to buy it, but no one wanted it. So I just HAD to buy it myself. -e. -Original Message- From: Raymond [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, November 17, 2001 5:30 AM To: Libretto Subject: Re: [LIB] What are L50s and L100s worth these days? Just to give you an idea ... I paid $750AUD (about $375USD) for my L50 a month and a bit ago (after which I joined this list!) but it came with a whole pile of stuff: - both the standard docking bar and the enhanced port replicator - 56k Xircom Realport modem with all cables - power supply - floppy drive - Teac 10x PCMCIA CD-ROM drive - Canon BJC80 mini IR printer with both print heads, power supply, a few spare ink cartridges, carry case PLUS a scanner head - all original diskettes and CDs for printer, scanhead, laptop, etc. - all manuals for all the major bits and pieces plus (expired!) warranty cards, receipts, cleaning sheets, etc. - Other bits and pieces (keyboard, mouse, disk box, etc.) However it only has the original 770MB HDD and 16 meg RAM in it. It doesn't have any bad pixels however nor does the libby or any of the other bits and pieces show any signs of being dropped (not a single scratch on the case or screen, none of the corners had 'flat spots' which would be a sure sign of being dropped, no rattles in the CD or printer) - apart from being a little bit dirty it was in what I could see as perfect condition. It wasn't overclocked (in fact I couldn't see any signs of it ever being opened). The battery was also in pretty good condition, I got 1 hour out of it when I turned everything on and kept the hard drive thrashing, stretched it to 1.5 hours using it carefully. You could probably get a good estimate of a fair price by subtracting how much you recon the CD, modem and printer would be worth, subtracting a bit perhaps to account for it having been dropped and missing pixels, then adding the hard drive, RAM and battery packs in. I'd estimate it'll probably get you perhaps $450-$550AUD ($225-275USD) but then again that'll be in an Australian environment where there is a premium for relatively rare technology (because the market is so small here). Your mileage may vary in the US or Europe. Hope this helps! - Raymond --- /~\ | | "Does fuzzy logic tickle?"| | ___ | "My HDD has no reverse. There are several different drivers it can use and I've never worked out which one works - so I put this in "svga" and "accel" and everything is happy. I've posted my XF86Config in the recent past so it should be in the archive somewhere. I haven't got my pcmcia network card running yet so I can't post from the lib at present. The RH7.1 Instalation Manual (http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.1-Manual/install-guide/) is clear: Identify Disk Partition to Install From Note Hard drive installations now require the use of the ISO (or CD-ROM) images instead of just copying an entire installation tree. After placing the required ISO images in a directory, choose to install from the hard drive. You will then point the installation program at that directory to perform the installation. Re: Funny little mouse pads!
Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2001 15:56:04 -0400 From: "E. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Funny little mouse pads! Pres, Breaks down like this: $7 $10 S/H to me ("Roger" at MicSol says the shipping for ten sets will still be $10.) $3.50 Priority Mail to each other guy (easier for me as I don't have to buy envelopes) So even if we buy 10 sets, it'll come to $ 7+3.5+1 (one tenth of the original shipping cost). Assuming Priority Mail (easier for me) it will never dip below $10.00 for each set (unless YOU want to orchestrate this--you won't have to pay $3.50 to ship them to yourself--you'll already have them). Looks like Priority Mail is not such a good idea. I'll use regular First Class post.. If I get five people who want in on this, it will be worth it. ($7+(10/5)+1.00(my own S&H charge)) So for five guys, it will be $10.00 for each set of 2. Please contact me directly (not to the list anymore) if you're interested. Once (if) I've got five people in on it I will place an order. Guess I'll be using my ThinkPad's red "eraser tip" on my L50 for a little longer. BTW, don't close the Libretto with such a tip on the pointer stick--it'll depress one more more keys on the keyboard. -e. - Original Message - From: "Pres Waterman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Libretto" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, June 04, 2001 1:50 PM Subject: Re: Funny little mouse pads! > Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2001 13:45:55 -0400 > From: "Pres Waterman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Re: Funny little mouse pads! > > I'm good for a set if it'll cost me less than $10 delivered to 11772 > > Thanks > > Pres Waterman W2PW > c/o Patchogue Motors, Inc. > Long Island Ford and Kia dealer > > GO BILLS! > - Original Message - > From: E. Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 16:24:05 -0500 From: "E. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: Help this fuul out Since you're doing so many re-installs of Win95, you might want to give the following some thought. - Put two partitions on the drive, making the D: drive big enough for an entire Win95 CD (hopefully you've got a big enough drive for this). - Install Win95 on the machine (from floppy). - Get a CD-ROM working (here's hoping you don't have similar problems with that). - Copy the entire Win95 CD to a subdirectory on your D: drive (there's some stuff you don't need, but I'm not at home to check right now). - Wipe the C: drive and re-install Win95 from the D: drive (to C: of course!). - Now you've got the equivalent of a full CD install on your libretto with the contents of the CD available from your D: drive whenever you need them. This makes re-installs and other system upgrades/changes (new hardware, settings changes, etc.) so easy. This is just one way to go about it. I did the following 1) created the max-size 8 GB default partition with boot floppy with Win98se on the libretto 2) used a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter (a really good one) to hook the drive to my toshiba M500D server (I found a local Boston computer store that sells these if someone needs a source) 3) used Partition Magic 4.0 (yeah it's old) to create another partition to use all available space (minus 100 MB) from the end of the disk 4) Slapped the drive back in the Libretto and formatted the second partition So far it has hibernated a few times and it hasn't killed the drive. The only thing I need now is an Adaptec 1460A slim scsi card since I gave away my Sony PRD-650 to my sister. Does anyone have a spare for cheap? This one comes with the regular (not enhanced) I/O adapterso I'll probably buy the enhanced port replicator. Does the enhanced port replicator have a USB port? I'm looking to buy it for about $560 (with no guarantee that the battery will work). Includes floppy, power supply, I/O adapter. Is this competitive these days? I really wanted a 110CT but I haven't seen them cheap enough (less than $800). Any input anyone has about this is welcome. Whose L50's are overclocked, and how far?

What have you noticed about the post-overclock performance? 6. Would you overclock it again, give the chance to start over? 7. Anything else to originate about this? Is your video and audio >performance poor. If not, which emulator are you using? Boy, you sure came to the right person. I just happen to play snes all of the time on my libretto on long business trips. I even made a parallel port to snes controller adapter so that I can have a better input device than the keyboard. Ok, in order to have an 80x86 processor emulate a snes, it has to create a virtual motorola 68000 processor. Even though the origional snes ran at like 4mhz or so, you'll need at least a 200mhz in order to get decent emulation. My libretto 70ct is a 133mhz, and it kinda sucks, but it's better than nothing. If you're running it on a 60ct or 50ct, I pity you. :) To speed it up, try turning off sound emulation. Because the emulator is not trying to emulate sound anymore, it has more cpu cycles dedicated to emulating the graphics. You may notice the improvement, you may not, but its there. Another thing to do is run it truly from DOS. Not a dos prompt in windows, but a true start the computer when pressing F8 or something and not even load windows and go straight to the dos prompt type dos prompt. Without the windows overhead, you'll have way more ram and it'll run faster. Sound will indeed suck. A tiny mono speaker in the libretto that's less than 1" in diameter is not the best source for sound. I perfer fingernails running down a chalkboard to hearing that speaker. If you must use sound, use headphones or external speakers. That alone will improve the quality one hell of a lot. When it emulates sound, you can choose what rate the emulation is at that's fed to the sound device. The default is usually 22050hz in mono. In the settings this can be changed to a nicer, higher rate, like 44100hz in stereo. (please note that sound support is a pain in the ass under a pure dos boot, so you may not even have dos sound abilities except for under windows. also, some games require sound in order for their internal timing to work, turning off sound emulatuion may cause a few games to lock at certain points) Usually there's an automatic frame skip. The emulator will automatically skip frames on slow systems in order to keep the game running in real time. I choose to switch this off. You'll notice that the game will now be running in slow motion. This can be remedied to manually turn up the frame skip. Auto frame skip will skip more frames than a manual one, because of the calculations to see if it needs to skip or not. If you turn up the frame skip too high, you'll get a super fast game. Great for if a game is no longer a challenge to you. :) Finally, try to get a vesa2 mode to work for the emulator under dos, or run it in 16bpp or 24bpp graphics mode under windows for a windows emulator. This'll let the game now use effects such as transparency and faster graphics drawing modes. The emulator I use is called ZSNES. ( http://www.zsnes.com ) ZSNES rocks over other emulators because it is written completely in assembly language. This means that it's as fast of an emulator as one can get. Better than pretty much any other emulator I've seen. It's pretty simple to get working, but you'll find that it indeed does work the best for emulation of snes under the libretto's limited resources. After writing this email, I just checked out the site, it looks like they have a windows version. Humm, that might work almost as good as the dos version. But it is in beta though and I couldn't get it to work on my desktop system. Semi-OT: Libretto 50 and wireless networking cards
Date: Sat, 26 Aug 2000 20:15:16 -0400 From: "E. Smith \(TP\)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Semi-OT: Libretto 50 and wireless networking cards I'm currently comparing two sets of wireless network cards for use between my L50 and an IBM ThinkPad. I've got a pair of WebGear AviatorPro's and a pair of Proxim Symphony cards. I'd like to use them for file/print sharing and to share my cable modem. Here's where it goes off-topic: From what I've read, the Proxim cards are intended to be used to share an analog modem, but not a cable modem. Proxim, not surprisingly, sells an "ethernet bridge" which handles this, which you just plug into your hub (but it lists for $399!) I tried using WinRoute Lite to handle the cable modem sharing, hoping it might open the door to a solution. However, WinRoute can't see my other network card while my Symphony card is running (suspicious). It is worthy of note that the Symphony cards are physically superb. Each card's flat antenna protrudes less than an inch outside of my L50 (nice!) while the antenna and body of the Aviator cards protrude well over an inch (and then the flat antenna unfolds to an obtuse angle (just over 90 degrees). It's huge compared with the Symphony's antenna, so I'd like to get the Symphony cards to share my cable modem. Plus, the initial software setup of the Symphony cards is much easier than that of the Aviators. Anyone have experience with the Symphony cards that might help? Now, about the Aviators. As I said above, the cards are huge compared with the Symphony cards. Plus, the software comes across as more primitive (user interface-wise). However, the documentation clearly states that they can share a cable modem (and I don't doubt it). Also, the card has caused two thermal shutdowns in my L50 today (I believe I was messing with network drivers both times, so that might have just made it hyperactive, but I'm not sure). Anyone have experience with AviatorPro cards? Or with their Aviator 2.4 predecessor? The problem isn't coming up currently, but it's sure been trouble in the past. -e. - Original Message - From: "Philip Coombes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Libretto" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, August 08, 2000 4:26 AM Subject: Lib50 - Won't suspend > Date: Tue, 08 Aug 2000 09:19:15 +0100 > From: Philip Coombes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Lib50 - Won't suspend > > Hi all, > > I've got a problem which I'm sure has been discussed before but which up > until now I've been able to fix myself. L50 and SanDisk CompactFlash cards

I'd like to read CompactFlash cards with digital pictures on them with my L50 (with a PCMCIA adapter, of course). Will this work, or do I need a machine with a 32bit PCMCIA port? I just want to check this out before I buy a kit containing the PCMCIA adapter. -e. ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **
Linux on Libretto 50
Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 16:12:02 -0400 From: "E. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Linux on Libretto 50 I'm looking to put Linux on my L50. One factor in choosing a distribution is support for the L50's hardware. So, with that in mind, I'd like to find out what Linux distributions people are running on L50s, how the installs went, horror stories, love stories, etc. I look forward to a lot of responses. Hopefully, this will be a popular thread. -e. ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

Wanted: L50 hard drive "bracket"
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 13:32:03 -0400 From: "E. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Wanted: L50 hard drive "bracket" Hi, guys. I'd like to get a spare part for my L50: the little bracket that screws on to the hard drive and which is then anchored on to the case. Does anyone have a spare or know a source for one of these? It would make it easier to swap drives. -e. ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **
L50 not recognizing two new 6GB Toshiba drives
Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 10:21:24 -0400 From: "E. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: L50 not recognizing two new 6GB Toshiba drives I've recently tried two new MK6411MAT Toshiba drives in my L50. It doesn't recognize either of them. It is working fine with a used MKD6412MAT right now, but it sure doesn't like those 6411's. Before I get into the details of exactly how these drives don't work, I'd like to solicit anyone else's experience (good and bad) with L50s and the MK6411 drive. I'm running BIOS 6.50. Thanks for any help. -e. ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **
