Nice! I suppose that the coverage should improve. For example, I think you can add Astronomiya to the lexicon. But I cannot judge Ladino correctness in any way... In hspell it took us several years of pain-stakingly spellchecking Wikipedia pages to reach good coverage. But please do not let this discourage you. Well, if I were you, I'd start by creating a github repository with your code and a tagged version of your artifacts, these .aff and .dic files used by hunspell. This would let anyone with high-enough motivation the ability to test it on their own machine (I may volunteer). Next, I'm afraid, comes specialized packaging for different environments. In hspell I added Makefile targets for hunspell-he.rpm and for Mozilla xpi. The former is good enough for most application on Fedora/CentOS/RHEL. Then you could propose the rpm to Fedora; or the xpi to Mozilla; or hope that someone else does it for you for OSes and applications you are not familiar with. It's a long process, but when it works it's quite satisfying. Good luck, Dan. ___ Linux-il mailing list Linux-il@cs.huji.ac.il http://mailman.cs.huji.ac.il/mailman/listinfo/linux-il

But if one wants to add unicode to libhspell, what > should it be? UTF-8? Wide chars (UTF-16 or UTF-32)? I think this background is most important. The real questions is the motivation of the people complaining. If it is something beyond "yuck, 8bit is old!", we should ask them which encoding is good for their use case. When I compiled hspell for a (paying!) customer who used Windows, I wrote my own wrapper functions to convert Windows' wide chars to hspell's 8bit (and vice versa). I bet that if there's anyone using libhspell in a Unix-like environment, he would prefer utf-8. In my opinion, it is nice to fit to modern standards of your major target environment (read: utf8), but not necessary to cater to all encodings. Would you even consider supplying a hspell_iso88598_to_utf8 function to help your client app do the conversion itself? I'm not sure this is our bees wax. However this is only me and my bets. If anyone needs another encoding, let him speak now or use his own iconv calls forever. Dan. ___ Linux-il mailing list Linux-il@cs.huji.ac.il http://mailman.cs.huji.ac.il/mailman/listinfo/linux-il

Re: Announce: Hspell 1.1
Who said anything about *few* rules? They are many, and are complex, and have gazillion of exceptions. But they exist, and putting them into effect in hspell's inflection scripts is doable, albeit requiring a lot of meticulous work. The classical references for niqqud are Luah HaShemot HaShalem and Luah HaP`alim HaShalem by Shaul Bakali. These tables include all the rules and all the exceptions needed to add the correct niqqud to Hebrew words. Thanks. But it's rather hard to reproduce. It happens quite often in our complex environment, but it did not appear when I tried to brctl addif/delif in from simple scripts. If I come up with something that's simple to post and reproduces the problem, you'll be the first to know. I'm using CentOS 5, 2.6.18-8.el5 x86_64 kernel, with bridge-utils-1.1-2. Do someone here care to take a look at net/bridge/br_if.c's br_add_if()? I cannot really read kernel code; please enlighten me. I see there list_add_rcu(&p->list, &br->port_list); but I did not spot where br->port_list is locked. I worry because /** * list_add_rcu - add a new entry to rcu-protected list * @new: new entry to be added * @head: list head to add it after * * Insert a new entry after the specified head. * This is good for implementing stacks. * * The caller must take whatever precautions are necessary * (such as holding appropriate locks) to avoid racing * with another list-mutation primitive, such as list_add_rcu() * or list_del_rcu(), running on this same list. * However, it is perfectly legal to run concurrently with * the _rcu list-traversal primitives, such as * list_for_each_entry_rcu(). */ Thanks, Dan. = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

brctl aborting?
Hi List, I'm creating tun interfaces, deleting them, and connecting them to a bridge (not necessarily in that order). Occasionally, brctl aborts in what looks like a call to abort(2). I get /bin/sh: line 1: 30963 Aborted sudo /usr/sbin/brctl show sw0 Now what may be causing it? Might it be the fact that in the same time other processes are playing with brctl {addif, delif} ? A quick peek at the brctl code show no reference to abort(), so it probably comes from a deeper place. Fedora 7 --> Fedora 8
Dear List, For reasons best kept private, I upgraded by Fedora 7 box to Fedora 8 (via yum update). After the dependency hassle was solved, I'm left with an extremely slow-responsive GUI. Using ssh seems fine, but in xterm it takes almost a second for a typed key to show up. The odd thing, is that when I reboot with an old F-7 kernel this problem disappears (but another one, regarding ypbind/autofs emerges, never mind that). New unofficial version for SendSMS
Shana Tova to you all! As you may know, Orange changed their site AGAIN circa August 21st. I've made some crude adjustments to the SendSMS script to support the new site. Another change is that the script now expects Hebrew in UTF-8. The biggest change in the script is due to a developer who prefers to remain anonymous. That developer added proper support for ICQ (usable to send SMSs to all three big cellphone providers) via the vICQ Perl module. This means that before you can play with http://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~danken/sendsms you have to download http://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~danken/vICQ.pm and put it in something like ~/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6/Net/vICQ.pm . Then, edit sendsms so the line BEGIN {push @INC, ("/home/danken/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6")}; makes sense in your system. Note that you may need to enable SMS-sending in you ICQ account, which AFAIK can only be done with their official Windows client. Note further that the script is given under the GPL, and without any warranty whatsoever. I hope that you find this extra pain useful! [OFFTOPIC] [HEBREW] donate old computers to TAU
I was asked to forward this request for donation of old computers to a Tel-Aviv University project, aimed to teach computer usage to populations in need. This is not quite related to the list; nonetheless it seems like a good cause to put your old computers to. connect to remote smb printer via cups
Dear List, I fail to set up SMB printers on my FC6 box. system-config-printer seems to add the printer well, and reports that the printer is accessible. I can connect and print to the remote printer with smbclient and with /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb. I can send jobs to cups with lpr. But something on the middle does not work: cupsd does not seem to execute the backend, and the job stalls forever. Any ideas where is my problem or how I can debug this? All I learned from stracing cupsd is that it does not exec the smb backend (I don't know whether it should). Re: hebrew under latex with debian
I am unfamiliar with debian, but if you have an up-to-date tetex, you don't actually need ivritex to typeset hebrew - most of Tzafrir changes are already included into CTAN's babel. Check the version of hebrew.ldf: if it is 2004/02/20 v2.3h you're fine. Then, you should only convince latex to use the culmus fonts. For this, you can try my (undebianizd) package http://ivrix.org.il/redhat/tetex-fonts-hebrew-0.1.tar.gz On Wed, Aug 30, 2006 at 03:38:57AM +0300, Micha Feigin wrote: > I seem to recall seeing on this list that latex now uses true type fonts by > default, at least for hebrew. Hallelujah! Hspell 1.0 is released.
We are proud to present a new version of Hspell, the free Hebrew spell-checker. As usual, you can find the new release in the project's homepage, at: http://ivrix.org.il/projects/spell-checker/ In this release, as many as 1,500 missing base words were added, bringing Hspell one step closer to full coverage of the modern Hebrew language. Note that one of these 1,500 is none other than the word Hallelujah. Not only people who use Hspell directly will benefit from this release. Recently, more and more applications have been adopting Hspell for Hebrew spell checking. Their users use Hspell - often without even knowing it. Aspell, OpenOffice, Mozilla, and recently even Google's GMail, all use Hspell's word list for their Hebrew spell checking. Soon, users of these and other applications will also be able to enjoy the improved vocabulary of Hspell 1.0. The designation "1.0" does not mean that we think that Hspell is complete. We do, however, think that at this point we can confidently say that Hspell is mature, with a vocabulary large enough to satisfy most users. In fact, Hspell's vocabulary is comparable in size (22589 base words) to some of the printed Hebrew dictionaries. Hspell's interfaces (pipe interface, C API, and word lists created for Aspell) have also proven themselves useful over the last several releases, even if they still leave a lot of room for future improvement. We hope that you find Hspell as useful as we have had fun writing it, Nadav and Dan. Of course hspell supports piping. Just try. It even has an ispell-like pipe interface for programs, which is used by lyx, geresh, and the little demo script wassist.cs.technion.ac.il/~danken/cgi-bin/hspell.color.cgi That cgi is written in perl. It pipes the user text into another perl script that uses hspell to color misspelled words in red. I can let you peek into the scripts off list, if you want. Fedora contribution mechanism
Hi List, I thought it would be nice to have Hspell added to Fedora Core/Extra. In order to contribute the software, I have to become a contributor. And for that, I need to find a Fedora sponsor who would sponsor me. Is there a Fedora sponsor in the audience? Is there someone whose nephew knows a Fedora sponsor in the audience? Since in Fedora's eyes I am a first-timer packager, the sponsor is expected to review the Hspell package too. I've made a formal request in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=168624 but it seems too similar to a bug falling in a distant forest. Approaching this list seems more sensible. When I called to complain about this change, they told me it was initiated because Orange site now allows to send SMSs to different providers, which costs much more (and involves actual money taken given by Orange to the other provider). They promissed that the current annoyance will be simplified, and that the per-SMS password would be required only when accessing foreign providers. They did not give any hint regarding the date of this simplification. -- Dan Kenigsberghttp://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~dankenICQ 162180901 = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: OT: license problem with culmus fonts
Eli (and others), I think it is slightly inappropriate to speak the way you speak about the "author of culmus". Maxim Iorsh is not some kind of an absentee who would never read this list and cannot be approached. If you have a problem with the license of his fonts, contact him directly and request him to add the fonts exception to the GPL. I hope he agrees, since the current license might be too restrictive. Note that even Maxim agrees, it might not be easy at all - the Latin glyphs in Culmus are taken from the GPL-licensed URW fonts. -- Dan Kenigsberghttp://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~dankenICQ 162180901 = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
monitor a samba print server from Linux
Hi List, Is there an lpq/lprm-like utility that lets me monitor/cancel print jobs that were sent to a samba (windows) print server? In the (predominantly windows) network I use, I can connect to a printer using smbclient, and even send documents to print. Automatic Keyboard switching languages in Fedora 4
Am I imagining things? I upgraded FC1 to FC4, and without any reconfiguration on my part, the keyboard layout became window-specific instead of server-wide. This means that, finally, when I chat in Hebrew in one window and write in English in another window, I don't need to toggle the keyboard mode. I remember that years ago Nadav Har'El fantasized about such an option. On my Gnome it has been realized. Re: nezeq overcharge for internet calls
Few years ago, Bezeq was forced by the Knesset to give special rates to people who make few calls per month. This came after Bezeq raised the basic phone line charge and lowered the per-second charge - a step that is good for large companies and rich teenagers and bad for poor old people with few relatives. Anyway, according to fine print, the few-calls discount is void if you buy ADSL. The logic is that if you do that, you must be rich and not worthy of the discount. I have no idea why, but Bezeq's salespersons forget to emphasize this fact when they sell you faster Internet connection. I'm not sure this is your case; Call Bezeq to make sure. IBM desktops screaming under Linux
Dear List, I wonder if anyone heard of a similar problem. Somewhere there exist two IBM desktop machines, model 8189-7cg to be exact, running RedHat 9 (2.4.20 kernel) and Fedora Core 1 (2.4.22-1.2197 kernel). Once in a not-too-long while, they start lagging, executing processes very slowly, and then shrieking loudly for long minutes with their motherboard beep. The only thing that stops this annoyance is a hard reset. This never happened when they run Windows (which they do rather seldom, so I am not completely certain about this point). Do you have an idea where to look? What could cause this kind of behavior? (P.S. I know this is a tough request, but please try to refrain of mentioning the age per se of the kernels.) -- Dan Kenigsberghttp://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~dankenICQ 162180901 = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

odd behaviour of transparent https proxy
Few days ago someone (probably) did something to the transparent https proxy that buffers me from the world. Since then, I cannot access https servers. It is my problem, and not the proxy maintainers', because Windows machines seems to be immune to this. I don't really know where to start looking for an answer. All I know is that telneting to an https server causes a flood of ACKs right after the connection is established. I'd love hearing some ideas. Using FC1, kernel 2.4.22. The beginning of an extremely boring tcpdump follows. 19:27:00.568656 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: S 2458091977:2458091977(0) win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.587290 server.https > danken-lap.32848: S 2237799451:2237799451(0) ack 2458091978 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.587314 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.589938 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.589953 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.592834 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.592844 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.596724 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.596733 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.599182 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.599192 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.601536 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.601545 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.603536 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.603547 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.605561 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.605571 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.607912 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.607922 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.609851 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.609860 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.612200 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.612210 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.614465 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.614474 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.616581 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.616590 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.620711 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.620720 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.624248 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.624257 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.627768 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.627778 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.631333 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.631343 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.634099 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.634108 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.636764 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) 19:27:00.636774 danken-lap.32848 > server.https: . ack 1 win 5840 (DF) [tos 0x10] 19:27:00.638857 server.https > danken-lap.32848: . ack 1 win 16384 (DF) -- Dan Kenigsberghttp://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~dankenICQ 162180901 = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This lovely hack solves one of the problems. I believe that a proxy cannot see what's going on inside an HTTPS session, and therefore such tool is of lesser value for me. HTTP body capture with LiveHTTP Headers ?
I've been using http://livehttpheaders.mozdev.org/ for quite awhile now, whenever I needed to understand a naughty web site. I know that the name of the package suggests otherwise, but does anyone here knows if I can capture the bodies of HTTP requests/responses too? This would be even more helpful when it's HTTPS. I know that I have the code, and could change it myself in principle, but the relationship of me and chrome is a series of failures. :( -- Dan Kenigsberghttp://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~dankenICQ 162180901 = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Free Redhat 9 updates ?
Assume that I would like to continue my status of a free Redhat rider, and that I cannot convert to Fedora, yet I would like to receive frequent, reliable, security updates. Does anyone have recommendations for a specific RPM repository that allows for that? I managed to dig www.whiteboxlinux.org out of rusting memory. Is it good for my purposes? Are there better ones? [Ann] Hspell for English OpenOffice
Recently, Alan Yaniger of TkOS announced an OpenOffice module that allows Hebrew spell-checking in any non-Hebrew OpenOffice. See http://www.openoffice.org.il/ for further details Since this mode of operation is what I personally like, I sat down and prepared an RPM for that package. Unlike the TkOS module, my RPM uses the up-to-date version of hspell, which is 0.8. Sadly, it needs to install a second (!) uncompressed (!!) set of the dictionary files, even if you already have hspell installed. If you too have an English OpenOffice installed, you can already read and write Hebrew document. But if you are willing to spell-check your Hebrew, you are welcome to download it from http://ivrix.org.il/redhat/fc1/ooo-hspell-0.8-1.i386.rpm You may even wish to set your up2date to this directory, so that you'd be informed whenever hspell and friends are updated. -- Dan Kenigsberghttp://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~dankenICQ 162180901 = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thinkpad modem does not link with FC1 2.4.22-1.2188.nptl
I was using SmartLink's (non free) software modem with my ThinkPad R40, running Fedora's kernel 2.4.22-1.2174.nptl. Since that kernel had some local security issues, I decided to upgrade to 2.4.22-1.2188.nptl. To my sadness, I learnt that even though the SmartLink code compiles with the newer version, it for some reason does not link. Or it may be some configuration error on my part. Could anyone hep me read these logs? the first is the failed one, the second is the working old kernel.
