Re: Can SAMBA 3.0.24 be a BDC for a Windows 2003 domain controller?
On 6/26/07, Amos Shapira [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, I kept hearing that Samba 3 can join and do anything as a Windows Domain Controller even better than Windows itself. Partially true only. Samba will act as an NT domain controller, not as an AD Domain controller. You will not have Group Policy functionality (although there are third party commercial products that can add this functionality). You will not be able to use Exchange higher then 5.5. Samba is better as it can use LDAP as a back end, which is more flexible then AD. But now that I need it to replace a Backup Domain Controller (fka Secondary Domain Controller?) to a Windows 2003 Active Directory server I keep bumping into the following worrying FAQ: http://tinyurl.com/yrnhv7 quote Can Samba Be a Backup Domain Controller to an NT4 PDC? No. The native NT4 SAM replication protocols have not yet been fully implemented. Can I get the benefits of a BDC with Samba? Yes, but only to a Samba PDC.The main reason for implementing a BDC is availability. If the PDC is a Samba machine, a second Samba machine can be set up to service logon requests whenever the PDC is down. /quote And I'm not sure how relevant this is for my situation - is Windows 2003 considered NT4 PDC or is it something newer that Samba can cooperate with as a BDC? The long and the short of it: No. You can setup samba as a DC, with AD as a backend, but this does offer replication of the AD. Also the Samba online documents seem to come up with lots of stuff about 2.2, if Samba 3 CAN be a BDC for Windows 2003 and there is a good document on how to do this then I'd appreciate very much a direct pointer to such docs. I have the Samba HOWTO printed book from around 2.5 years ago but I'm not sure how relevant this is for today. Samba AD functionality is planned for Samba 4. Samba 3 is NT compatible. Samba 2 NT functionality was very limited. I used to be fond of ReiserFS v3 until I got beaten by it not recovering from a partition resizing excercise. Resizing a partition is not a good indicator. There are too many other factors involved. Trying to find the answer on the net I found: http://librenix.com/?inode=3296 (Circa 2003, recommends ReiserFS v4, which isn't in the mainstream kernel yet). and http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/388 (Circa 2006, recommends XFS). The files are e-mail messages which are writen, transferred then deleted. I'm also thinking about better ways to handle the files ( e.g. putting every few thousands of them in a .zip file to transfer, spreading them across a two-level directory tree etc) but I'd rathertry to keep the changes to the existing software and scripts the the minimum which is required to speed things up. Benchmark your own environment. Hardware specs (RAID, RAM, CPU, etc) can tilt the results. Repeat the benchmarks for about 3-5 time. I like Bonnie++. I remember there were some shortcuts in network security wehn Xen is activated, so maybe it's safer not to use it if the machine is meant to be a firewall as well. The VT extension is useful if you plan to run Windows as one of the guest OSs under XEN. VMware Server is suppose to benefit from it, I did not have the hardware to test it. If you plan to use VMware, you will need a base OS, vmware and guest OS. Keep the base OS as minimal as possible. You can install X and use the VMware console locally, or use VNC/RDP/X over the network. I would recommend the latter. XEN (if used from xensource) will install as the base OS. Social networking and FLOSS
Hi, I have a joined a group called the Interactive Business Circles (http://www.ibcil.com). This is a group of small businesses which meet once a week to promote each other from various businesses - from alternative healers and tarot readers to lawyers and accountants. What does this have to do with FLOSS? This may not come as a surprise to most of you, but small businesses and home office are not exposed enough to FLOSS, and this might be the forum to advance this area. The worst of it is that the people with the technical abilities (computer techs and site builders ) actually do their clients a dis-service, by avoiding FLOSS. An example: more and more of those business have web sites. Most are build around proprietary CM'S systems, flash, windows-1225 encoding and non-standard html/css. Those people then pay additional funds for promoting their sites on search engines. On this list we have quite a few freelancers and small business who make a living on IT and FLOSS. Merging both can promote both our our business, the FLOSS cause and other Israeli business. One thing to note: Most of those groups already have a Computer Guy on the roster, so other title / function will be needed. I am thinking mainly of site builders, VoIP solution providers, online backup providers, CRM solutions and so on. If interested, contact me off-list. Comments, thought and flames - on list. Gil P.S. There is little very little technical information on IP Centrex (other then the marketing fliers). I feel more comfortable with an Astrix based solution, but the return on investment for an Asterisk based system vs. IP Centrex for 8 users is about 48 months. Has anyone had any experience with IP Centrex and can compare it to an Asterisk box. Thanks There seems to be some misunderstanding about my calculations, so here goes: 1. Asterix server - based on two quotes I got, including hardware, 4 ptsn ports and labor is about 3,500$ (I can probably do it myself, but that's still labor). To this we add 3-4 Bezeq lines (~10$ month). IP Centrex
Hi, I am trying to evaluate the pros and cons between an Asterisk system and BezeqCall's IP Centrex. There is little very little technical information on IP Centrex (other then the marketing fliers). It's service based (10-25$ per user/month), You get an Ethernet port to which you connect your switch and IP phones. I feel more comfortable with an Astrix based solution, but the return on investment for an Asterisk based system vs. IP Centrex for 8 users is about 48 months. Has anyone had any experience with IP Centrex and can compare it to an Asterisk box. You are more then welcome for a support contract (~$350/Year). I use Debian stable and XEN sources. With etch being pushed to production, it will be a fast moving target in the next few months. I think you misunderstand how the Debian release process works. As the release date approaches, so will etch become a SLOWER moving target. Look up the term stabilizing in any dictionary. This was not my experience with sarge v. sta·bi·lized, sta·bi·liz·ing, sta·bi·liz·es v. tr. 1. To make stable or steadfast. 2. To maintain the stability of (an airplane or ship, for example) by means of a stabilizer. 3. To keep from fluctuating; fix the level of: stabilize prices. No 2 and 3 require opposing forces... In fact, come October (assuming current schedule remains) hardly any changes will be done to it at all. I know that no other software project you know works like that, but that's exactly what makes Debian so unique in terms of quality. You will need a XEN kernel for any distribution. Unless he gets his hand on a VT enabled CPU, yes. VMWare GSX will not require you to customize the kernels, but don't worry. You WILL pay for it in performance. Then again, I highly doubt you'll manage to notice the performance difference. XEN is noticeably faster then GSX, especially in I/O intensive tasks. But then again, XEN is more comparable to ESX and not GSX. Notice that the above applies to the (Very Expensive (tm)) VMWare GSX, which effectively works using the same technology as Xen. VMWare Server Beta uses the same technology as VMWare Workstation. The main differences are that it supports starting up the machines on reboot, seperating the actual engine running the machines from the GUI, and other features mostly intended for the administration of the process. GSX was not Very Expensive (tm), only Expensive. EXP is Not Expensive. ESX is Very Expensive (tm), and Virtual node (add P2V, Vmotion and other stuff) is Bloody Expensive (Pat Pending). As an interesting side note - people who need VMWare but are too cheap to pay for it can create and install machines for themselves using VMWare Server (free as in falafel), and then run them using VMWare Player (also free as in falafel). You cannot switch hardware (i.e. - point the CDRom to an ISO file or change the disk size), but it's otherwise functionally equivalent to VMWare Workstation. Of course, another thing you can't do is to install both on the same OS :-) My recommendation - don't be cheap, buy VMWare Workstation if you need it. There is an alternative called NISGINA which replaces the the Windows NetLogin service, but it is rarely used, since Samba provides native support for the Windows NetLogon service. Samba will provide the required information (LDAP and Kerberos) to the windows Hosts. The LDAP and Kerberos can then be used together with samba to provide other services (NSS, PAM, SASL, etc) AFAIK linux clients can use pam_ldap to talk to the LDAP server directly, and IIRC it much more stable then using winbind - I played with it before and I don't think I'll have much of a problem. Winbind is required in one of two scenarios: 1. Using AD to provide information for Linux services (such as PAM) without local user accounts. 2. Establishing trust and account mapping between domains. You don't need on a Samba standalone domain. -- Oded ::.. God did not create the world in seven days. Service console redirection
Hi, I have Debian installed on two servers, and IBM Netfinity 5000 and an HP Proliant DL380, and I would like to make the most of their service ports. The DL380 has the service port redirected to ttyS0. I can see the the BIOS boot sequence via minicom, and if I set up GRUB and inittab correctly I can also see the Linux boot sequance and login prompt. However, once Linux takes over I can only access Linux functions and not the BIOS (like the ESCRESCrESCR reboot sequence). Is this normal for the ServerWorks management functions? On the IBM the console port is not a normal com port. I can get to the BIOS and service processor functions, but I haven't got a clue how to redirect GRUB/Lilo and ttSx to it so I can also get a console. Any suggestions / pointers / links welcome. VMware GSX host file systems
Hi, I am planning on deploying VMware GSX on a Debian system. While I am happy with ReiserFS for most FS needs, I am wondering if it would make sense to user XFS or JFS for the VM image partition, as it seems both perform better with large files. On a side note, can anyone share information on performance of the ESX product vs. the GSX product on Linux? Aside from memory over-committing, most ESX functions (such as vMotion) are not relevant to me. Multiple copies of UML don't coordinate memory use very wisely (anything better than UML for this?), so you'll probably have to purchase lots of RAM at today's outrageous prices. Re: mini-itx linux support
Pre-M Series do not have enough processing power for mpeg playback, but TV out does function. There is no importer for them to Israel at the moment. There was a company that used to import them, but since no-one imported compatible cases, they stopped. You need administrator rights for such a change, and if you are a part of a domain, there could be a domain policy overriding those changes. Shachar's post made me think it would be useful to have a converter from UNIX zone files to Windows registry entries - does such a program exist? BTW - this morning I discovered that apparently the latest Sun JDK 1.4 knows the right DST for Israel. Looks like even Java knows better than Windows how to handle this :). For years MS israel ignored this issue, their site advocating using TZedit (not a part of windows) or registry editing (with the usual yard long disclaimer). This is strange because MS has the tools to implement those changed easily via the windows update or OGO tools. For Windows machine, the GMT offset is usually wrong about half of the year. The solution? http://www.lingnu.com/IsraelTimeZone.zip It has time zone definitions for Israel for 2003 and 2004. Later years will be available when Poraz decides when that is meant to be. Of course, you can only merge one of them at a time. Once you merge the relevant time zone, you will need to load the control panel setting and set automatically adjust for daylight saving. Viola! your computer will keep the time. This also allows Windows users to use NTP and other time synchronization protocols, get proper calendar, etc. Feel free to spread the word. The more people use the proper time zone, the more fluent the Internet communication is going to be. The time zone was tested on Windows 2000, and should work on other Windows NT platforms as well. Re: Media Center linux
Noam L. wrote: (my first post in Linux-IL, lets hope I get it right!) Hello Gil. I'm also trying to achieve the same thing. The Hauppauge WinTV series works great with Linux, yet- it doesn't matter which TV provider you use (cables or sat), since it gets connected using a coxial cable, which is outputted from both cables' and satellite's convertors(memirim?:P). I am still on an analog connection. One of the main reasons is that I don't want to program both the video and the converter. Also with analog connection I can watch one channel using the TV tuner and record another using the video tuner. (still trying to figure out where can I buy WinTV in Israel.) I e-mail Hauppauge and I am still waiting for a reply. Though, I'm looking at the direction of DVB - which can connect directly to your satellite or cables output... I have no idea yet if it'll work in Israel, but it's an option (and a better one - it's digital, and if I'm not mistaken (and I hope I'm not!) it allows you to watch multiple channels simultanously (that means, record something on channel A while watching channel B) my default selection would be either debian or gentoo. I am trying knoppmyth (http://hust.la/KnoppMyth/), a knoppix+mythtv hybrid. good luck -- Regards, Noam L. = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: The Linux GUI crisis
Omer Zak wrote: On Tue, 6 Apr 2004, Gil Freund wrote: [snip] CUPS (the original example given) is an foss project from a company that make a parallel commercial product. It has a licensing cash flow and therefor has money not related only to support and service. The same is true of Mozilla, Openoffice.org and opengroupware, to name just a few. The CUPS example is excellent in the sense of how an _implementation_ of a foss product has failed. 1. The project maintainer implemented a security feature without referencing it in the documentation. 2. The distro maintainer entered a a package into the distro without due consideration of how the package operated in the distro environment. Both points don't contradict the general statement - if they were paid (in money or otherwise) for their jobs, they'd have time to find and fix those problems. My point was that they were. Both CUPS and RH have a cash flow. 1. How would people, who want to be GUI designers, get trained in the art of GUI design? Read Eduard Tufte's books on design. It's not UI, but on how to present information, and check out Orelly's Annoyance series. s/get trained/get experience/ - mea culpa. 2. Widely-used Free Software is an unbeatable way to advertise one's GUI design expertise. I would think the same holds true for advertising your coding skills. How does this refute my points? It doesn't. I thought it was a was a very valid point. I do think it refutes the claim that the UI *requires* a commercial licensing structure. 3. Reduction of effort and cost of building excellent GUI by reusing composite controls, design patterns, templates (like wizards) and prior art. True, but they this contradicts what you state in section 5. A commercial (G)UI would prohibit that. Not necessarily. LGPLed widget sets would allow building commercial GUIs from them. Or even GPLed ones with special exception for allowing use for constructing proprietary GUIs. Where is the contradiction with my suggestion that special licensing models might help? There is a huge gap between _LGPL_ and _commercial_ licensing. LGPL is indeed (in my opinion) a reasonable path to advocate. I think KDE and Gnome try to achieve this. 4. Super-GUIs, which over time learn what and how users actually perform their tasks; and then automatically construct special-purpose wizards to help the users perform those tasks with minimum effort. The learning is not necessarily confined to a single user/installation. Are you talking about AI or machine learnability? If so, this is science fiction. I don't envision this as being prohibitively difficult. Software, which captures user's actions (keypresses and mouse actions - after being interpreted by the target application) for a long time and finds repeated patterns - might construct wizards for those repeated patterns. The big stumbling block is to make such software interoperate with the wide variety of GUI applications out there. The wizards won't initially be pretty but the user might later tweak the GUI (if the wizards are compatible with GUI design tools like glade) to fit better the task on hand. I think this clouds the GUI / usability issue. They are not the same. Learning users preferences (such as baesian spam filtering) is not necessarily a UI issue. Learning usage habit should start long before the UI is even drafted. One of the problem I see facing users is the the users often mix usability, functionality and UI. If you turn to most users in the correct corporate market and ask them to describe the functionality they require from their PIM (Personal Information Manager) you will get a fairly accurate product brochure for Outlook. The outcome is, not surprisingly, Evolution. Add an AI which learns the users work habits on the same GUI and you will end up with same application with a slightly different menu structure. You *will not* find the next Ecco, PackRat or Act. 5. Licensing models (like LGPL), which allow an application to be split into Free part with command line interface, and Proprietary part, which implements top-notch GUI. Bad idea. Consider the Bynari mail server. This is a collection of foss products (OpenLDAP, Postfix, Cyrus IMAP and other) collected and integrated with a cool management GUI and and outlook connector. This is a very robust exchange replacement. In order for this to work, you are forced to use the versions of the foss applications bynari can interact with. This means that you end up for a propriety solution, that limitsyour options. Not exactly. You have (or supposed to have) access to the interface between the GUI and the Free software modules. So you can implement your better features as long as they work with the same interface. So you still get some benefit from the Free Software model. While true. I think this overlooks the Aunt Tillie argument (for A.T. read also MCSE): If I want to tweak that application(s) then the UI is secondary. Consider the CUPS
