Re: Hd question.

2001-12-18 Thread Declan Moriarty

I agree with the opinion that the disk is dead, presuming you already gave us
all the relevant info. Can you mount a floppy and boot? If you have windoze,
www.toms.net/rb has a version of linux that builds under dos - a zip file.
Then

#e2fsck - n will tell you about the state of the hd, and offer the address of
an alternative superblock
# badblocks will check the disk blocks. Use switches. With that history, I'd
back up anything you want off the windoze side NOW!!

e2fsck can be run to call badblocks.

I never got plugins to work with Netscape-6.2, but I did with Mozilla, and
Netscape 4.78. What you need to know is that the plugin directory is moved,
and the plugins supply instructions for version 4.78 (old dir).

You must have a lot of time on your hands using Netscape. I decided I did
not, and put on Opera 5, which doesn't need this farting about with plugins,

Repeat but say "No" to 'Echo Off'. Then you just might see the error the
system sees.

[FURTHER BIG SNIP OF IRRELEVANT TRIVIA(my own utterings)]
right - that means you diidn't load the driver in config.sys - either because
1. the driver is not there, or (check this much)
2. the driver didn't see the cdrom, (no cdrom - they don't load) or
3. the cdrom isn't physically connected right.

Personally, I find the most common failure mode for cdrom drives is not
reading the disk, so I would expect 1. or 3. above.

ATAPI cdroms are ok under linux - aren't they? (Plea for insight and wisdom
;-)

You may have failed the idiot test. Open the box, and check where the ribbon
cable from the cdrom goes. It should go to a plug on the m/b. There should be
a power connector; all the plugs should be in position - tight. If it's on
the same cable as the hd, check the jumpers (It should be slave). Check if
the red line goes to pin 1 on the m/b and on the hd. Tell us what you find.

Wow, that sure generated a lot of replies! LOL. Thanks for the answer to
the question and the humor.

I began with RH5.2 and after installing RH7.0, I switched to Debian - I'm
currently using woody. I have installed many distros including Caldera, but
never really settled into any of them.

I put Slack 3.3 on the laptop, just because it seemed like the easiest one
to do a floppy install with on only 4Mb. That's been fun. So far I have
the base system and a couple of programs from the AP section. Tonight I'll
add stuff from N. There will obviously be no X on this machine. After that
I'll be learning the slackware package manager which is "none" as I
understand it. I would welcome input from our resident Slackware user/s on
how to put mutt on there. It's not included in the N set of programs. Do I
need to install any development programs in order to install mutt if I don't
find it among the things with slack-3.3?

Depends on your video card. 8Mb is pushing the lower limit for a decent X
server because typically, X will use about 3Mb of RAM. You will need
swap. But once X is up and running, shouldn't be too bad. I've never
tried with a 486 laptop because you can't change the video card, and
almost all 486's need to have a better video card (and of course you'll
connect a better monitor to the laptop).

You will need Mozilla installed to use Galeon, but it's worth it.
Have a look at the Opera 6 tech preview. It does some plugins.

Re: Plugger 4.0

2001-12-18 Thread Joel Hammer

I can't use opera alone because there are some sites, like
fidelity.com, which won't work with it. The opera authors know this and say
they can't help it, some sites just don't support opera.
I haven't seen how to get plugins to work with opera.
I just downloaded the newest opera and I came across some item about plugins
saying that plugins have to work with netscape before they work with opera.
I may be wrong, but that's what I read, so I went to netscape 6.2. I wrote
the author of plugger -4.0 and he says he can't even run netscape 6 on his
computer! Netscape 6.2 installed and ran just fine on my caldera 2.4 with a
kernel upgrade and XFree4.x.
I simply can't believe (yet) that plugins don't work with netscape 6.2.
After all, this is not new technology! I think my problem is documentation.
I still haven't found any documentation about plugins which enables me to
trouble shoot this problem.

Slackware 3.3 is pretty old. The package management tools are
installpkg and removepkg, which are in the hdsetup package, at least
with current Slackware versions. Likewise, Slackware 8.0 puts mutt in
the mutt package. See the man pages for installpkg and removepkg, but
to install, for example, mutt, you become root and then do something
like:

# /sbin/isntallpkg /path/to/mutt-package

Other Slackware package management tools include pkgtool, upgradepkg,
makepkg, explodepkg, and setup, which is the system setup and
maintenance utility and gives you an option to perform package
maintenance.

Yes, if mutt is not available for Slackware 3.3, you will need to
install pieces from the development series in order to compile mutt
from source.

Hi gang!

I'm sure this must have come up before; please bear with me.
What's the general approach for solving "failed dependencies" when the

Specifically, I'm installing rpm-3.0.6-4.i386.rpm and libdb.so.2 cannot

I've done rpm --rebuilddb and updatedb.
I'm not going to do --nodeps on rpm and risk having no rpm at all.

Just got around to answering this. I have no clue, and I'm not
familiar enough with SuSE to guess wisely. My only recommendation is
to run Netscape with the console redirected to a file so you can see
what, if any, error messages the mail sending process generates.

Locate Netscape.ad and change resource "*useStderrDialog:" to
"False", which will cause error output to go to Netscape's terminal,
then restart Netscape from that terminal. Perhaps this will reveal the
problem.

Who knows? I know I'M confused about RPM. AFAIK, rpm only knows about
what rpm installs. If you've loaded a lib via tarball, rpm won't know
about it.

FYI, I've got 3.0.6 installed on my Caldera eW31 system and
/lib/libdb.so.2 -> libdb.so.2.7.7
/lib/libdb1.so.2 -> libdb1.so.2.7.7

libdb.so.2.7.7 & libdb1.so.2.7.7 are part of the db-2.7.7-12 rpm.

'What does rpm -q db' say? Perhaps upgrading your db package will solve
your dilema.

libdb.so.2 is a link to libdb1-2.1.2.so
I did an rpm -qif on both of these libraries to find out what package
they started from, but they belong to no package. ;-(

Fwd: [COLUG] Beehive Linux [Distro Review]

2001-12-18 Thread Douglas J Hunley

-- Forwarded Message --

Subject: [COLUG] Beehive Linux [Distro Review]
Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 14:23:46 -0500
From: Peter King <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Home: www.beehive.nu
Version: 0.4.4

The author of Beehive Linux, Kevin Clevenger, issues this warning in the
README file that accompanies his distribution:

This distribution is not for people unfamiliar with the inner
workings of Linux. It is for people that know what they're
doing (more or less) and just want to build small, fast,
i686 optimized workstations and servers without the crap
 and clutter.

It should be installed on a clean system. If it thrashes your
box, scrambles your drive, spews chatter on your net, or
otherwise does unexpected or unkind things - you were warned.
It works fine for us. If it works for you great. If it doesn't
either offer to help or send a fix to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Note that this distribution is compiled for i686. It will not
run on a processor less than an Athlon or PIII.

The parenthetical "(more or less)" was enough for me. I've since installed
Beehive Linux twice over, and found it to be a clean and well-implemented
version of Linux that doesn't demand SysAdmin skills to get going, and
doesn't overload a typical system. It's best for servers, but can be turned
into a decent workstation distro. Clevenger is aggressively up-to-date in
his choce of packages: see www.distrowatch.com for the full details. The
current version (0.4.4) is based on Kernel 2.4.16, and it includes KDE
 2.2.2, emacs 21.1, ReiserFS, mySQL 3.23.45, Python 2.1.1, Sendmail 8.12.1,
and other up-to-date goodies. Beehive does prefer inetd to xinetd, though.
The packages are all included as *.tar.gz files. The whole install is about
a 20-minute affair on my AMD 800Mhz Duron system, with no hitches. Beehive
Linux is distributed by .iso image; download, burn, boot from the CD and
 follow the (minimal) directions.

Clevenger is clearly a vi partisan: although the latest emacs (21.1) is
included, none of its associated lisp files are -- which means it doesn't
run properly -- and, as far as I can tell, it's configured without support
for X, which is a bit annoying. More serious an omission for a workstation,
at least for my purposes, is some version of tex. Fortunately, teTeX is
readily available for downloading, and is straightforward to compile and
install. Mozilla is included rather than Netscape, and Konqueror is
available in KDE, but, although Beehive includes bits and pieces of
GNOME/GTK, Galeon isn't among them. In addition to KDE, Beehive provides
WMaker, BlackBox, and enlightenment. Packages are managed with beepkg,
mostly useful for uninstalls -- otherwise tar and gzip do the work (much
 like Slackware).

Beehive Linux was clearly inspired by Red Hat. Although it's not based on RH,
it makes use of RH tools such as chkconfig, and sets up its configuration
scripts and the like in a similar manner. For instance, simple configuration
is done in an /etc/sysconfig/ directory.

The Reiser filesystem seems to be solid and every bit as effective at error
recovery as the ext3fs shipped with RH 7.2. I haven't seen any comparisons
between the two but you can bet there will be lively debate heating up
 shortly, if not already.

Beehive installs with most choices left to the user. There's no /etc/skel for
useradd, no inetd.conf file at all, and so on. I eventually figured out that
all tty and pty devices are set without group/world write permission -- an
example of the kind of low-level knowledge Beehive relies on. I've found the
whole thing to be quite robust: no crashes, glitches, or errors, though lots
of little configuration tasks; a more experienced user [i.e. just about
everyone else in COLUG] could take care of all the details quite rapidly.
 (Here's a tip: set /dev/null world-writeable as part of the post-install
 process.)

I'm impressed with the stability and maturity of this newcomer Linux
distribution. It's happily running on my test machine, and, if I can clear
up a few more details (and get Galeon running!), I may put it on my
 production machine.

Clevenger distributes Beehive Linux as shareware, asking for $30.

Ok, I have received several replies and greatly appreciate the help and
suggestions. Now I don't know whether to feel silly or glad. While
re-doing all of the step that I have taken so that I could write down
the messages, I was able to start the install via boot floppy and
successfully installed mandrake. I can't figure out what has changed
since, or maybe what I did wrong last time :) However, I still got the
same error when trying to boot from the cdrom. While I would like to
figure out the cause of the cdrom error, I have erased the evidence.
Several people have asked about the CD player, it did work in windows
and I was able to see the contents of it. In fact, I created the boot
floppy with tools provided on the cd. Declan has inquired about the
physical connection of the cd-rom which I will check after work today.
Otherwise, here is the information requested and the steps taken when
trying to boot from the cdrom.

Thanks again.

Pentium 150
80 meg ram
Western Digital 6 gig IDE hd (windows95 only, 4 partitions - 3
partitioned into ~1.97 gig, 1 with the remainder)
Digital Research 36X IDE CDROM drive
Creative Banshee 3D Blaster with 16 meg SDRAM
I don't know the motherboard or ram manufacturers.

The steps:
1. After failing to boot directly from Mandrake cd, Caldera cd, or RH
cd, adjusted BIOS to boot starting with CD, then A:, then C:
2. After making the switch, still ignores the cd and boots windows
3. From the mandrake cd, I read in the help file that I can reboot into
DOS mode and use the autoboot.bat file from \dosutils on the cd. This
appears to successfully begin linux installation, but I get the error
"Kernel Panic : vfs : unable to mount
root fs on 08:04".

Well, this sounds like the issue. My rpm does not know where the
libraries came from. They must have started from some other source. I
already did updatedb and rebuilddb. I will install the db-2.7.7-12 rpm
and add the links and then try to install the rpm again.
Thanks!

OK, that was the fix. I pulled db-2.7.7-8.i386.rpm and also
rpm-3.0.6-1.i386.rpm off of the eW3.0 cd I got at some Linux conference

Yeah, in my last job I worked with a bunch of former military. The
workplace was close to bases of three services, so they were all over
the place. They would all stand around on the back dock smoking and
talking about what they were doing in 1975. Occasionally I would chime
in with "That was a good year. I was born." I don't know why they
didn't appreciate it...

Quite often unfortunately. Alot of managers still think of anyone under
30 as being young & inexperienced, regardless of their work history or
knowledge. I find it incredibly frustrating, especially when lately,
i've been tasked with interviewing people for a position that my manager
has deemed me not 'mature' enough to take.

Whenever "make modules_install" complains about anything, its almost
always because you've got an outdated version of modutils. So, what
version of modutils do you have installed? It needs to be at least what

The problem is that rpm probably wants that file to be somewhere else. Find
that, and a symlink fixes it. There are real fancy options with rpm which
might help you run this down (Man rpm... read for an hour, try 27 times or
use a package manager :), or talk to someone who actually has it running

Jerry,
Sorry it took so long to respond. I got caught in the layoffs at work and
things have been rather hectic. I would have loved to write a step-by-step
for this, except that I can't seem to figure out how to get wep to work. I
could not get it to work with the orinoco module. I don't believe the orinoco
module is capable of this. I found in wireless.opts where it stated that to
use encription requires the wvlan_cs module, but I had no luck getting that
to load either. I then tried linux-wlan-ng and could never get it to work at
all. At this point I reloaded the machine with a newer version of caldera and
haven't had the time to try linux-wlan-ng again. Right now I am running the
orinoco module with no wep...again. :(

I wouldn't think so. His problem was that rpm didn't know about the db
version he had installed (or, more specifically, the libdb version), and
as a result didn't know the libdb dependancy was resolved. I imagine he
coulda "--force"'d the install, or "--nodep"'d it and all woulda been
OK. But, if you're gonna use rpm to install, you might as well satisfy
what it thinks are its dependancies, even though the dependancies are
met and rpm just doesn't know about it.

As it stands now, rpm knows about his db install, and he's running a
newer version than he was when he started, and he's got a current rpm
version that'll read version 4 rpm's. Seems to me to be worth the
potentially more ciruitous route.

reiserfsprogs is irrelevant unless you are using a Reiser filesystem.
Ditto for everything listed beneath it.

I'm typing this on a box running 2.4.16 with modutils-2.4.2 so the
minimum version listed is kosher. However, it seems that Caldera dumped
a 2.4.3 out for some reason. Do you have any unusual hardware on your
box, or did you patch this kernel in any way? You might want to grab
the official modutils source and build & install it. I've started to
become leary of Caldera packages, as they put all of these 'enhancement'
patches into them which don't always work as they should. A fine
example is their hack of XFree86.

 Subject: Newbies Prayers Answered (LONG)

 http://www.redmondlinux.org

I have been following the development of Redmond Linux for a while
now,
never actually using it. I decided to change around my LAN, and figured
now was as good a time as any to give it a try. All I can say is wow.
 Flawless install in under 20 minutes on a duron600@1050 abit kt7 256megs,
generic nic, SBPC 128, tnt2 m64. If you're frustrated by linux, or are
thinking about trying it out read on. This is simply the best option for
those looking for a windows alternative, or a linux playground/schoolyard.

It addresses every issue I have ever heard a new user complain about.

If you are an experienced user, I highly suggest you recommend this distro
to potential newbies or frustrated newbies you may encounter.

I'm not at all affiliated with Redmond Linux, I just see this as a
solution
to the flame wars that clog up the linux newsgroups.

 Anyway... on with the review.
 The installer proceded as follows:

 1) Put CD in drive, boot off CD, if you currently use windows you can
start from there as well booting from the CD or it will make a boot
floppy.

 2) It auto probes for mouse, keyboard, and videocard/monitor. These
steps
consisted of hitting next until they were done.

 3) Choose partition to install on. You have the option of the whole
disk,
existing partitions, free space, or expert, where you do the partitioning.

I don't know if you can partition on the fly, but even if you could I
would
 recommend partitioning in another app.

 4) The install starts. There is only one possible config. Easy for new
users who don't know what exists in the linux realm.

 5) Set up users, enter names and passwords. Easy.

 6) Set up networking, and printing. DHCP, none, or manual settings.
Printing using cups and it looks like gimp-print. Piece of cake as well.

 7) Play solitaire until done. Its really a step!!!

 8) make boot disk/restart.

Like I said. A complete install in under 20 minutes. You can look up
what
 it comes with at http://www.redmondlinux.org

After playing around for a few hours I'm still very impressed.

The kde menu (your only window manager choice) is set up neatly
and
logically organized. In every menu the most often used choices are there,
and "advanced" options are under a submenu. For example, the section
"music and movies," has mp3 player (xmms in disguise) dvd/divx player
(xine
in disguise) an option to watch tv... as selections, as well as a sub-menu
option for "more multimedia programs," which contains the mixer, midi
mapper, and arts builder. The menus are very simple to understand, and
every program works perfectly. Full screen divx, handled much better than
 win2k did on this box.

The desktop is a clone of windows. "My linux computer" opens to
give
shortcuts to all your drives, which are all perfectly configured to
automount. CD's auto-run, ex... DVDs automatically load with xine, every
file type I tried was correctly linked to its application. The feel is
much more windows like than linux. There is no home directory mentioned
(it does exist, just silently), and drives are presented as if they were
not part of a contiguous filesystem, but separate file systems. The
"Network Browser" icon opens up to all the Windows workgroups you can
access from your box, browsing is the same as with windows. NO MOUNTING
NEEDED Unfortunately, if you want to access a smb/windows share
directly through other programs you must mount it, or copy the file to
your
 local drive.

RedmondLinux developers have made all the program choices for you. They
chose mozilla as the web browser and email client, but of course you could
install whichever you wanted. They did provide IMHO a great selection of
apps. There is one very strong app for every task you may need. I
personally would only want to add kate, kmail, knode, and maybe
star-office, these are personal choices; an equally powerful alternative
to
each is included. Everything is there in one form or another, including
all of the common linux browser pluggins.

Administration is a breeze. The Developers made front-ends for almost
everything you could want, and incorporated them into the KDE Control
Center as pluggins. Suddenly the KDE control center is as powerful as
linuxconf, no joke, but much easier to use. They did the same advanced
options thing from the menu here as well, which lends itself well to its
target audience. I personally like the fact that the developers added a
link to turn sshd on or off, and called it remote access configuration.
The launcher hints at the possibility of remote trouble shooting/repairs.
 This would b

I'm currently running W3.1 with kernel 2.4.16 and ext3. All I had to do was
upgrade e2fsprogs to 1.25 and compile ext3 into the kernel(not a module) and
it worked. I tried to compile util-linux and it didn't work. I can't
remember the error, but I didn't do it. Currently only having a problem with
my ide cdrw. I'm gonna save that for another post.

In a big way...I've had multi-part interviews, technical interviews all
go great, only to meet with (what seemed to me) resistance upon actually
meeting me face to face. I am not a baby face by any stretch (keep yer
comments to yerself), when they realize they are dealing with someone
who's 15-20 years their junior, my credibility goes out the window.

Libraries are the most often problematical when loading rpms because the rpm
is in many cases not for that distribution. So whats happening is that the
rpm , probably for RH, is looking in one place and the distro is storing the
lib in another. So you have to EXPORT the PATH statement, which is something
that I always forget how to do. So I normally enter the path into
/etc/ld.so.conf; do not forget also to always call "ldconfig -v" after
playing with or installing libs.

Ok then it is the combination of the CD drive & the disk that is causing the
problem. Windows does not push the hardware like linux does, and windows uses
the std bois but linux introduces its own and ignores the std bios after a
certain point. So you are like many of us in the list where at some point we
had to use the floppy to boot with some have to use commandline and so on.
I have found that with the latest h/w and distro installs its a cinch with
cdrom boot. Not long ago I was using floppy boot.

One point mate, is that it is imperative that you DO know the chipsets on
board the MB and the video card so as you can tell linux what empiricals to
use. This is where most beginners fall down, not knowing whats under the hood.
With linux as opposed to windows, you need to know as windows cludges things
and operates as an i386 generic whist linux uses the full potentialities of
the h/w.

Well at least i can say congrats and welcome now...

Rick, you old bugger, you were not looking when the truck hit. I had a
similar problem with apic in the drivers selection all I did was to go back
and say NO and recompile. You probably do not need it anyway.

koffice-1.1.1

2001-12-18 Thread Keith Antoine

It usually someone else other than I who gets in first after a release.
However I download this last night and tried it this morning. Its only a
minor release but wondered what was to offer, only to find that it crashed
immediately in Suse and had problems when started from a terminal. There does
not appear to be anythingb that is worth the release and the BIG point is not
addressed once again, no export word filters. Kword, mime, abiword; pretty
useless.

I also decided as I was going to abamndon Suse 7.3 for many reasons,
recompiles, sound and other little niggles that I would download the mandrake
and Caldera versions. I was introduced by Caldera to linux and gui, also
until this year had no thought, even though I had struggles with ltp etc of
using anything else. I was actually thinking of putting 3.1.1 beta up again
as I know more of Caldera than anything else.

What has stopped me was the download of koffice-1.1.1 for Caldera. It is
compiled for 2.1; yes I know they have not released rpms for 2.2, but why
release it at all, its a minor release and its meant to run on 2.2 ? I am at
a loss to follow the thinking at Caldera these days. I would be back onto
Caldera if they would only put out up to date releases, or put up files to
download so as the user could do that.

Mind you that is not to say that any other distro has grabbed me in any
substantial way either. Mandrake is the next one to be tested again but I do
not like the no /opt and another couple of tricks, gcc 2.96 i.e..
Suse is ok so long as you do it their way and do not fiddle.

Just seems that today many are working against each other rather than with
some game plan, this release is just confirmation. Imho don't bother.

I would have done that except I was worried that the dependency might
have been real and then I would have been without a working rpm.
In fact, I DID this with another rpm about 10 minutes later that also
had a false "unsatisfied dependency" and --nodeps and --force worked OK.

I'm not complaining ;-) The key thing for me is that I can "back out"

I downloaded version 43 of this a couple of days ago. Things to commend
are the quick install, ext3 filesystem and kautorun (from kdenonbeta,
hacked by redmond to make it work).

However, after a few hours playing, I decided I didn't like it much. A
lot of KDE 2.2.2 is missing and what is there is hard to find. For
instance I didn't expect kiconedit to be on the Development menu. KDE
has an excellent menu structure, but all the distros mess with it.
Redmond messes with the icons too, but their icon artist is little better
than Mandrake's.

Bzt. Wrong answer. The orinoco module supports WEP. My silver cards
do 40 and 104 (Windoze can only figure out how to do 40, but I use 104
between my Linux boxes -- they drop back to 40 when a Windoze box tries to
talk to them).

What card? The linux-wlan-ng stuff will NOT work on hermes cards. All
cards that run the hermes chipset (Orinoco and a pile of others) run WEP.

Try this:
iwconfig eth# key s:mycryptokey

Now, any station not running WEP can't talk to you. Windoze stations will
run with "mycry".

If you're using an Orinoco card, I suggest you upgrade your kernel (to at
least 2.4.14), upgrade your wireless_tools (to at least
wireless_tools.22.tar.gz) and also your /usr/include/linux/wireless.h.
Caldera is hopelessly outdated in this arena.

After you get stuff running, try:
iwconfig eth# power on
iwspy eth#
ping remote system
iwconfig eth#

you'll see some stats about how good your connection is. There's also a
graphical utility you can use which shows you your SNR (signal to noise
ratio).

Downloading behind a firewall with gnutella

2001-12-18 Thread Joel Hammer

I am trying to get hagelslag, a console gnutella client, to work.
My machine is behind a firewall (of my own making).
I can search fine and get results but I can't download anything.
I have port 6346 redirected to the masqueraded pc, although I doubt that
could be the problem. I haven't gotten a single packet to that port all
evening. I am not sharing any files at the moment.
I have tried the push option on download.
(BTW: I don't use limewire because I get a java error when it runs and I can't get
hagelslag to compile properly on my gateway computer.)
The documentation with hagelslag doesn't include any troubleshooting.
Well, I'll put some files in my Share directory and see if anyone can upload
me.
Any insight appreciated.
