Hi Nicholas,

IIRC the hatch isn't in the Tardis ceiling, but in an underground
chamber of Skaro. I think you might mean the episodes Destiny of the
Daleks in Season 17:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/destinydaleks/

Tom didn't do many Dalek stories, but he does climb up his scarf to
escape the daleks and throw a one-liner quip at them.

Mark

He calls down to them

It's not just the more recent episodes (depending on your definition of
recent), the Daleks could levitate during my childhood era (80s-90s).

I'm sure I remember an episode from the Sylvester McCoy era where the
Daleks were chasing him and to evade them he simply ran up some stairs and
then the daleks levitated after him. A quick google shows that the
episode
was called remembrance of the daleks unfortunately I don't have the time
to wade through the many youtube clips to try and view it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_of_the_Daleks

In the cliffhanger to the first episode, a Dalek levitates up stairs. The
sequence was intended to put to rest a joke about the inability of the
monsters to do so.

The BBC's website seems to imply it's always been that way.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/remembrancedaleks/detail.shtml

This story reveals for the first time that the Daleks are capable of
ascending stairs. (Although this is the first time that a Dalek is
actually
seen to ascend a flight of stairs, there is a scene in season two's The
Chase: Journey into Terror in which such an occurrence is clearly implied;
and season twenty-two's Revelation of the Daleks shows that both the
Daleks
and Davros are capable of hovering above the ground.)

According to wikipedia, season 2 was ~1965. I can't help you with the Tom
Baker question though, it's a tiny bit before my time.

1) Am I remembering this correctly?
2) If so, is a clip of this online somewhere, in an easily linkable

Further, my understanding is that in the more recent episodes, the

3) Is there a representative clip of this online?

[ANNOUNCE] London Perl Workshop

2014-10-06 Thread Mark Keating
In the heady enthusiasm of all the fun things we are doing at this
year's London Perl Workshop I may have missed telling you all when the
workshop will be

London Perl Workshop: Saturday 7th November 09:00-18:30 - University of
Westminster, Cavendish Campus.

Also a few more details, once more, about the Arduino Workshop:

 Sponsored Arduino Workshop http://act.yapc.eu/lpw2014/news/1247

This year we will be presenting a Sponsored Arduino Workshop with
part-sponsored equipment. Adrian McEwan and Hakim Cassimally will
present a 4 hour workshop (split into two parts) focussing on the
Arduino and Internet of Things.

The workshop will divide into a structured introduction, and a free
period, where you can play with more electronics or code depending on
your interests.

First half: Basics of Arduino and Electronics

 * connecting Arduino, basics of IDE, basics of C++ for Arduino
 * breadboard basics
 * wiring up a simple output (LED)
 * wiring up a simple input (button, potentiometer)
 * more complicated outputs - RGB LED
 * connecting to a simple internet app (basic PSGI) to change colour of LED

 Second half: Playtime!

Collaborate with other attendees or work by yourself on, for example:

 * more electronics, wiring up a more complicated input/output from our
   goodie bag
 * more client code: play with C++ on the Arduino side
 * more server code: extend the basic PSGI you connected to earlier
into a full featured Cat/Ox/Mojolicious app
 * more Perl interfacing: play with Device::Firmata,
   Device::Arduino::LCD, or Device::WebIO

As part of this workshop all attendees will leave with an Arduino Uno,
Ethernet Shield and various small components. The cost of these
components is close to £60 per kit; but thanks to generous sponsorship
the attendees who sign up to this will only be charged £25 per person.

To sign up to this you must contact Mark Keating
atm(dot)keating(at)shadowcat.co.uk mailto:m.keat...@shadowcat.co.ukor
Claire Jacksonc.l.jackson(at)shadowcat.co.uk
mailto:m.keat...@shadowcat.co.ukmailto:c.l.jack...@shadowcat.co.ukand confirm
your participation. They will give you a link of how to pay. Payment
*must* be in advance and numbers will be limited to 15 persons. We
recommend you sign up soon as two thirds of the places are gone.

The speakers have been generously sponsored by theEnlightened Perl
Organisation. http://www.enlightenedperl.org/

Please feel free to share this news around. Remember that the submission
of Talks/Workshops, submission of Sponsors and registration at the
conference should be done as soon as possible.

[ANNOUNCE] London Perl Workshop: Update: Checkpoint Charlie

2014-10-03 Thread Mark Keating

Good Day to you all.

The London Perl Workshop is now just one month away and so it is time
for the usual prods, kicks and pushes to be sent to those thinking of
speaking, attending or sponsoring to get body parts into motion and
change gear ratios or be left in a sea of shame and lost opportunity.

Already confirmed for this event:

A keynote by Hakim Cassimally and Adrian McEwan - authors of 'Designing
the Internet of Things'.
A workshop of using Arduino and the Internet of Things by the above.
(see below)

Dave Cross workshop/tutorial on Perl and the Internet of Things
A workshop by Ian Norton on Learning Perl Together
A workshop by Andrew Solomon on Web Development with Dancer2
The Hardware Toys to play with - bring a laptop and see if you can code
on one of our toys to perform

Free Morning Coffee Break with special snacks.

Free Afternoon Coffee Break with cakes.

Evening 'sponsored' Beer in our traditional LPW Social. (see below)

Some important dates:

17th October
Last date to sign up for the Internet of Things Arduino Workshop. A
co-sponsored event that costs just £25 to attend (to help towards
purchasing hardware). The actual cost of this event is far higher as
both speakers have been generously sponsored and the Enlightened Perl
Organisation will be picking up the extra £35 on each kit (the kit you
will receive to take home contains both an Arduino and an Ethernet
shield along with many other bits and pieces). This is a fantastic
opportunity and the course is already half filled as there is a maximum
number of places.

24th October
Closing date for talk submissions but we will be starting the process of
choosing talks this weekend, so this may change or a valuable chance
lost as other talks whetted our appetites first. Time to submit people,
even if it is a placeholder to make sure you are registering intent.

31st October
Last date to register and ensure you are on the 'printed' list of
attendees. Why does this matter? Well we base much of our decisions on
room sizes and talk choices based on those that have registered, and
this year due to us setting some of the scheduling early you will be
able to pre-state what you want to attend a little earlier. It also
helps us with the coffee breaks and beers in the evening.

Anytime
We are still looking for sponsors to help join in with the 'evening
social', this year we have paid for a new element in a hardware
workshop, sponsored kits and increased university charges. For this
reason we have less available in the pot for the evening. If you want
your company to be part of the social event now is the time to act. We
are also still seeking sponsors to help cover the cost of venue hire and
our special event! We are also looking for vendors who wish to sell
hardware at the event, if you know of anyone who creates IoT hardware
such as Arduinos, Raspberry Pis etc. and they want to come to the
workshop and sell their wares then please have them contact the organisers.

There are a greater number of workshops this year than we have ever held
and this will be an unmissable chance to receive free training whether
you are new to Perl or really keen to learn more about how to use Perl
with hardware devices. If you know of any other list or interested
parties please pass on the details of this mail.

As always Mark is contactable as m(dot)keating(at)shadowcat.co.uk.

Thanks

[ANNOUNCE] Announcement 1: The 2014 London Perl Workshop: Perl and the Internet of Things

2014-07-24 Thread Mark Keating
It is my great pleasure to announce the theme and date of this year's
London Perl Workshop (the United Kingdom's Perl Workshop), which will be:

Perl and the Internet of Things
Saturday 8th November 2014
University of Westminster
Cavendish Square Campus

WHAT IS IT?
The London Perl Workshop is a free one-day conference in central London,
UK. LPW is the UK's Premier Perl Event and so is also known as the
United Kingdom Perl Workshop (UKPW).

HOW CAN I ATTEND, OR PRESENT A TALK?
If you would like to come then please log in on the site at
www.londonperlworkshop.org.uk and click that you will attend, this is an
important step for us and our sponsors so we can judge numbers for the
events and activities.

If you are not already registered with Act you can do so on this site,
it is free and easy to do. If you have attended a Perl event recently
you will probably already have a login with Act, otherwise you will need
to create a new user first. You can do this by using the links in the
navigation menu on the website.

If you would like to speak then please submit your talk on the website
as soon as possible - the earlier you submit, the better for the
organisation of the event. If you want to check on specific requirements
or have an idea for a type of talk or event then please contact the
organisers.

This is a free event though we also allow people to purchase a ticket
for a sum of money if they so wish All ticket money will go towards the
running of the event in this and subsequent years so is greatly
appreciated. However we are an inclusive community and do not set fiscal
brevity as a barrier. if you wish to attend for free please select a £0
ticket. All attendees MUST select a ticket value.

IS THERE A THEME?
The theme for the London Perl Workshop will be Perl and the Internet of
Things. It will focus on using Perl to control a wide variety of
connected devices. We will consider a 'thing' to be a hardware item, a
physical device, a virtual device or a service (especially if it is a
service that remotely affects hardware).

We have already confirmed that Hakim Cassimaly, co-author of Designing
the Internet of Things will be attending the event and giving a special
workshop on hardware connected devices powered using Perl. We hope also
to have Adrian McEwan (the book's other author) attend.

We welcome the submission of talks, discussions, presentations and
workshops using other languages, or that have seperate technical or
engineering objectives. The strength in developing is knowledge from a
wide variety of sources. If you use another programming language or
system to connect physical and virtual devices together and want to
submit or attend the event then we would be honoured to welcome you. If
you are connected to a UK Hackspace and wish to attend and display then
please approach the organisers with ideas of your requirements.

Speakers are invited to talk on any subject that relates to this theme,
though we will also accept talks on other subjects. We will accept talks
from people of any age, background or circumstance, the London Perl
Workshop is an inclusive event and we would love to have you attend. The
call for papers is officially opened and waiting.

This year we hope to have access to three Workshop rooms and would like
to run as many workshops as possible to introduce new users to the world
of connected devices, the literal 'Internet of Things'. We would also
love to refresh the skills of those wishing to engage with the latest
developments in the Perl and other languages. If you wish to submit a
workshop please use the same submission form as the talks, please note
that workshops will be 60, 120 or 240 minutes in length.

Proposal Deadline: Friday 24th October 2014
Speaker Notification: Monday 27th October 2014

SPONSORSHIP
Each year we are required to fund the conference rooms, lecture theatres
and workshop rooms, as well as arrange and cover the costs for many
other activities normally associated with the London Perl Workshop such
as the famous sponsored beer after the conference.

We will once again be hosted by the Department of Electronic,
Communication and Software Engineering who have secured us a generous
discount on the normal university room rates and who will hopefully play
a greater part in the event this year with activities that coincide with
the workshop.

If you wish to sponsor the event we have several basic packages (others
packages may be tailored to your specific needs), please forward this to
all sponsors or persons you feel would be willing to help sponsor this
event:

All Sponsors (minimum sponsorship £250) will receive:
* A page on the wiki;
* Their logo on the website and in all related marketing;
* A write-up by Mark in all advertising and related promotion;
* A page in the Conference Booklet (A5);
* Their logo in the back of the conference booklet;

[ANNOUNCE] Challenging the word 'free'

2013-11-27 Thread Mark Keating
Everyone should be aware by now that the London Perl Workshop is not
just in its anniversary year but is the event that gives a lot to the
notion of 'free'.

We have:

* Free presentations
* Free training
* Free coffee in the morning
* Free coffee in the evening
* Free drink at the social in the evening
* Free food at the social
* Free entry (though many donated and for that we are hugely grateful)

However, we don't just stop there, and nor do our sponsors. This year we
have a number of free gifts and prizes coming from sponsors:

* Free gift for everyone who registered before 15th November from Bytemark
* Free prize (to anyone) for getting a Perl question right - visit the
Eligo stand for a chance to win

* free chance to win one of 10 books from O'Reilly
* two awards (kindles) from AntibodyMX as voted for by the attendees.

So everyone visiting the event now has the chance to walk away with up
to three gifts, and the speakers get to fight for the chance for a fourth.

LPW, probably the best event in existence. See you on Saturday.

[ANNOUNCE] London Perl Workshop: Call for papers

2013-10-21 Thread Mark Keating

Dear all,

This is the final week warning. The London Perl Workshop will officially
close its 10th anniversary call for papers this week.

Friday the 25th October at Midnight UK time will be the final submission
deadline for all speakers. If you could also make this the final date
for early Lightning Talks it would be greatly appreciated.

We are seeking a Pub Czar to arrange the pre-event party. this has
typically been the London.pm Czar but we do not wish to pressure them
(unless they are willing) into seeking a location for this important
task and placing it on the wiki. However if more than one person wishes
to step up and be counted as Czar, then hurrah.

If you would like to sponsor the event this is still possible and you
should contact Mark at m.keat...@shadowcat.co.uk as soon as possible to
discuss this.

I look forward to a mad rush of submissions as per previous years.
Please remember to spread the word about this event. When registering
choose your ticket level (important) even if selecting a free ticket.
Please feel free to use this text or your own words when spreading news.

*TALK DEADLINE*
This is your countdown notice that lets you all know that the deadline for
submitting a talk to the London Perl Workshop is rapidly approaching. This
year the date of Friday the 25th October has been chosen.

The theme for the London Perl Workshop will be Decadon: A Decade of the
London Perl Workshop. It will focus on the past ten years of the London Perl
Mongueurs and the London Perl Workshop, and will focus on the manner in
which Perl is used in the commercial world and the strength of Perl for
development in an enterprise environment; we would also like to see talks on
the usage of Perl in the past 25 years and the evolution of the environment.
You can use any aspect of Perl such as Camelia, Rakudo, Raptor, etc.
Speakers are invited to talk on any subject that relates to this theme,
though we will also accept talks on other subjects.

This year we hope to have access to three Workshop rooms and would like to
run as many workshops as possible to introduce new users to the world of
Perl and to refresh the skills of those wishing to engage with the latest
developments in the Perl world. If you wish to submit a workshop please use
the same submission form as the talks, please note that workshops will be
60, 120 or 240 minutes in length.

*REGISTRATION*
Once again I would like to inform you all that early registration is
incredibly beneficial to the event. It allows us to judge numbers for the
sponsored coffee, snacks and evening social event. Please sign up early and
please help us spread the word.

This year there is a second level to registration. We have tickets. All
attendees need to state what ticket level they would like to have, this
includes speakers. There is no barrier to entry and you should feel free to
take the £0 ticket if you wish to do so. However, we also have 3 ticket
levels above this (£25, £50 and £100) these voluntary ticket amounts wil
contribute directly towards the hosting of this event and if we reach
certain targets other special things in the coming year.

Please make sure you select the ticket you want. We will also be collecting
donations, as per last year, for a number of special Perl projects on the
day.

*SPONSORS*
As always we would like to have as many sponsors as possible, not just for
their valuable contribution to the holding of the event but as participants
at the Workshop.

If you know of anyone who wishes to sponsor the London Perl Workshop please
have them contact Mark as soon as possible.

As always we look forward to seeing you all at the Workshop on the 30th
November. This is the 10th anniversary of the London Perl Workshop and we
should mark this year with a special event.

Fair enough.

That said, if two of us admit to nincompoopery, rather more people

chosen. is rather ambiguous compared to The deadline for talk

So three of us can share in a little nincompoopery ;) Yes I could have
worded it that way to be fair.

shortcomings with itemisation:

Talk Deadline: Friday, 25th October
Talk Announcements: Monday, 29th October
Conference Date: Saturday, 30th November

Registration open until: Saturday 30th November

Is that clearer? And easier for everyone to remember and to share (which

Thanks for the feedback.

2013-07-05 Thread Mark Keating

1. Announce and Date, Time and Location
2. Theme
3. Register of Attendance (tickets)
4. Call for Papers
5. Call for Sponsors
6. New to Perl

1. Announce and Date, Time and Location
The London Perl Workshop (LPW) is a free one-day conference in central
London, UK. LPW is the UK's Premier Perl Event and is also known as the
United Kingdom Perl Workshop (UKPW). In 2013 the London Perl Workshop
will be held on Saturday, November 30th at the University of
Westminster, Cavendish Campus.

2. Theme
This is the 10th Anniversary of the London Perl Workshop and we have
decided to call the event Decadon. We will be opening the field for you
to hold a talk on any matter relating to Perl or the community from the
last 25 years. We would especially love talks about the local London
Perl scene over the last 10 years.

3. Register of Attendance (tickets)
This year we have taken a departure from the norm and added pricing to
the tickets, but let me pause you before your shock turns to ire. The
LPW has always been, and will continue to be, a free event. We survive
from the efforts of our volunteers and sponsors and long may that
continue. however each year the event grows a little larger and we would
like to do more things such as invite special speakers, put on special
talks and continue those efforts throughout the year. For this we will
need funds so we will be asking you to consider buying a ticket to the
event.

There are four ticket prices and the basic attendance ticket is €0
(EUR), this allows us to keep this event free to attend for those who
cannot afford, or do not wish, to pay the ticket prices. In the Perl
Community we have always believed that money is not a barrier to entry
and never will.

Tickets:

1. Attendee of the LPW - €0
2. Friend of the LPW - €25
3. Lover of the LPW - €25
4. Sponsor of the LPW - €100

If you are being sent by a company this is a way for them to help the
community and to further the needs of the event, they could also
consider taking one of our sponsorship packages.

4. Call for Papers
The call for papers and talks is now open and the closing date for this
is Friday, October 25th 2013, the successful papers will be announced on
Monday, October 28th. Please submit early as exceptionally interesting
talks will be selected early.

5. Call for Sponsors
What can I sponsor?
What have you got?
Sponsorship of the LPW is a free choice. As is the manner of your
sponsorship. For more ideas please talk to Mark Keating, email to
m.keating(at)shadowcat.co.uk. We are always on the search for
interesting, innovative or evolved sponsorship opportunities. We like to
work with the sponsors to achieve a mutual beneficial aim, so please
talk to us about your requirements and what we can offer.

What do we offer?
1. Text and link on the sponsors page (you to supply);
2. Thank-you in the closing address;
3. Ten minute slot to discuss yourselves if you choose a premium
sponsorship;

4. Full page on the workshop wiki to fill with whatever you like ;
5. The chance to promote yourselves as connected to the London (and
wider) Perl community;

6. The option to create a unique sponsorship package;
7. A lot of love and respect from the organisers and attendees.

As last year we are offering the chance to become a specific sponsor of
one of the activities associated with the event. The current packages are:

All Sponsors (minimum sponsorship £250) will receive:

* Their logo on the website and in all related marketing;
* A write-up by Mark in all advertising and related promotion;
* A page in the Conference Booklet (A5);
* Their logo in the back of the conference booklet;

* A fifteen minute introductory spot in their room on any subject they
wish (please confirm with the organisers if this is required);

[ANNOUNCE] QA Hackathon Close of Applications

2013-02-22 Thread Mark Keating

Applications Close: 3rd March, 2013: 23:59:59 GMT

As many of you know, or by now you certainly should know, the Perl QA
Hackathon will be held in Lancaster, United Kingdom, from 12th-14th
April 2013.

On Sunday, 3rd March, we will be closing the date where you can apply to
join us at the event and taking the current list of attendees as our
master list to attempt to sponsor/fund. If you wish to join us please
make sure you head to the wiki and fill in the relevant attendees,
expenses, catering and travel pages.

This event is a great contribution to the lifeblood of the Perl language
and the Perl community and as many events it relies on the generosity of
sponsorship and donations to make it a success. Any contribution, large
or small, makes a huge difference and we would like to encourage you to
help us raise the necessary funds to host the event and to continue to
hold it in the future.

If you are unable to donate to the event you can still help by spreading
the word and encouraging others to donate or sponsor. We would like to
thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Golly, that looks almost absurdly reasonably priced!

That's not just compared to the commercial training companies with
small groups, dedicated building overheads, lunch, computer equipment
etc which if I remember rightly would be maybe £500-1000 a day?

But even assuming that Google Campus has a community, grassroots
focus, and is therefore offering cheap/free room, that you have a
larger classroom size, and save money by having them all bring their
own laptops, £30 seems fairly competitive against similar courses run
by Manchester MadLab's Omniversity.

I *do* have absurdly low overheads :)

But it's also about giving stuff back to the community. And trying to
encourage people to come along and hear about the cool things that
Perl has been doing in the last few years.

[ANNOUNCE] Perl QA Hackathon

2013-01-31 Thread Mark Keating
It is my pleasure to announce that the Perl Quality Assurance website is
now live and accessible and we are hoping a number of UK based Perl
programmers would be willing to attend. The QA Hackathon will take place
over three days between 12-14th April 2012 in the North West of England,
yes there is a lot of England beyond the northern border to the M25.

The closest airport is Manchester, though there are also airports that
are nearby at Blackpool, Liverpool, Leeds/Bradford, Newcastle, Glasgow
and Edinburgh. If you are coming via train, it is 2hrs 20mins from
Euston to the city the venue will take place in.

If you are planning to attend this years event then you will need to
visit the wiki and fill in details on the Attendees page along with the
Expenses, Catering and Travel pages.

This year we are asking potential attendees to make a positive plan of
what they hope to work on or achieve while at the event so that we can
not only build a better Perl but promote the event appropriately and
gain sufficient sponsorship to make it the best possible hackathon.

If you would like to sponsor the event, or know of someone who would
sponsor then please contact Mark or Ian at your earliest convenience. We
will also be allowing people to make smaller donations or complete
sponsorship through the EPO website using our internal donation system.
We welcome any contribution towards making this event happen.

I cannot stress the importance of sponsorship and donation enough and if
you can encourage an employer to sponsor, or find it in your
hearts/pockets to donate yourself then we would be extraordinarily grateful.

[ANNOUNCE] London Perl Workshop: Volunteers

2012-11-22 Thread Mark Keating

Hi all,

As usual the London Perl Workshop is shouting out for volunteers to help
us set up and run the days activities. In previous years I have received
a lot of help from the community and i hope to persuade you to help again.

We shall assemble between 08:00 and 08:15 on the morning of the
conference to help with the moving of books, setting up of video
cameras, placing of room signs, organising sponsors desks, packing bags
etc. - Anyone who can be there all hands are welcome. martin Brooks of
antibodyMX fame has offered a free breakfast if you turn up 07:15 at a
local cafe - he will no doubt append details to this email.

We will need three people to help maintain the rooms, sit in, hold up
signs counting down the time and making sure the cameras are turned on
and recording, We have L1 covered so i need 3 more.

Léon will once again chaperone our Lightning Talks and I want to thank
him in advance again for jumping into action.

We will also need people to help tidy, pack and leave the rooms looking
somewhat normal, so if you can aid us that would be most helpful.

If anyone can bring along extensions that would be of great help, I need
3 for the cameras if they can be supplied.

Thanks in advance, look forward to seeing you all on Saturday. Check out
this post where I say thanks some more: http://bit.ly/UUJfAG

you're interested?

Pretty please?

Well, I have 2 talks, one that I've written and presented last week at the Hive
London Meetup, but is not Perl related at all:

http://www.slideshare.net/pfig/my-life-as-a-beekeeper

and another one I've been mulling and considering writing to submit to LPW, but I'm
afraid it wouldn't warrant me many friends in the L.pm community, it's titled The
problem with Perl and is basically me ranting about the nice things in Java and
Python that we (as in, myself until I started doing serious Java and Python, and some
other L.pm'ers I've talked with) just tend to shrug off or don't even think about, or
think they're bad but they're actually not bad at all.

The problem with the first talk is that it's target audience are people who
already know Hive, and with the second the fact that I value my physical
integrity :)

Cheers!

Pedro,

Please submit this to LPW this year, I think that this is just the type
of talk i would love to have presented, there is a large part of our
community that values learning about the aspects of other programming
languages we don't understand, relate to, or perhaps know. A workshop is
an -ideal- place for that.

Look forward to seeing the submission, this Friday is the closing date :)

[ANNOUNCE] London Perl Workshop: Call for Papers - ends in less than 19 days

2012-10-01 Thread Mark Keating
Today is the first day of October which indicates that there are less
than nineteen whole days until the final submission date for papers at
this year's London Perl Workshop are left. If you are going to submit,
and this includes submitting a lightning talk, then now is the time to
do so. Don't leave it until the last moment, the longer we see papers
submitted for the more fondly we think about them.

I am hoping that some of you will consider submitting the much longer
workshop style presentations. In particular it would be good to see
beginning workshops in the many successful Perl projects such as
Catalyst, DBIx::Class, Mojolicious, Rakudo and Dancer, as well as the
other elements of Perl. If you would like to do a
presentation/tutorial/training like this please contact Mark as soon as
possible.

Our aim at the workshop is to introduce as many new people to Perl and
the community as possible and we particularly encourage people who are
new to the language, and community, to come along and soak up the
atmosphere.

The London Perl Workshop (the United Kingdom's Perl Workshop) will be
held on: Saturday 24th November 2012 - University of Westminster -
Cavendish Square Campus. Our theme this year is '25 Years of Perl', now
is also the time to register for the event so that we have a good idea
of the number of attendees for the day.

Please ensure you spread the message as far and as wide as possible,
including sending this mail to any mailing lists or groups you believe
may be interested. If you know of any news service, online resource or
other source this news can be distributed to, please feel free to do so
or to contact Mark with details.

A large number of people have always expressed surprise that the event
is on and the date, they are also unaware that the event is free to
attend, with a host of other free initiatives including the training,
and totally sponsor supported.

Regards, mdk.

[ANNOUNCE] Upcoming Training Courses in London

2012-09-13 Thread Mark Keating
I am sure the majority of people on the lists will know about these but
I would like to encourage everyone to promote these upcoming courses on
mailing lists and social media accounts where possible. Perl is seeing a
real need for new developers and the only way we are going to ensure
that we get them is by courses like these. Also, for experienced
developers the Conway courses are invaluable, Damian is a master of
Regular Expressions and having the skills to present well in front in
public are essential for many wishing to further themselves.

Please share these:

Perl School: Modern Perl for Non-Perl Programmers
Sat, 6 October, 10:00
Campus London
Tutor: Dave Cross

An introduction to Perl for programmers who don't use Perl (or don't use
much Perl).

Perl has come a long way in the last ten years. It has web frameworks, a
powerful ORM, a huge number of add-on libraries and one of the most
flexible object systems you'll find in any language. And there are
plenty of companies in London who use Perl and who are looking for Perl
programmers.

Come and see why so many companies rely so heavily on Perl. Find out
what makes Perl programmers so productive.

Perl author and trainer Dave Cross introduces Perl in a low cost
training course that is tailored for people who have used other
programming languages.

Regular Expressions Training Course - full day tutorial by Damian Conway
Thursday 11th October 2012
Venue: Imperial Hotel, Russell Square, London WC1B 5BB
Tutor: Damian Conway

Description: This full day tutorial introduces beginner and intermediate
programmers to the full functionality of Perl's regular expressions (and
hence to the general behaviour of the Perl-compatible, or POSIX-ERE,
regular expressions that are used in most other programming languages,
editors, and developer tools as well).

The morning sessions will focus on the underlying theory and the core
features of Perl's pattern matching, thereby exploring the principles
and mechanisms underlying all regular expressions.

You'll see how the highly compact syntax of patterns actually programs a
built-in “text-recognition engine”, and you'll learn how to design and
construct regexes to drive that engine efficiently. By lunch time,
regular expressions will no longer seem like a mystery wrapped in an
enigma wrapped in line-noise.

In the afternoon we'll look at some of the newer and more powerful
features of Perl regular expressions, such as code embedding, recursive
matching, named subrules, and backtracking control. These high-end
features are not well covered in most textbooks or classes, yet
understanding and being able to apply them is essential when dealing
with large, real world data sets.

By the end of the day, you will no longer have to “cross your fingers”
when using pattern matching, and will have gained the necessary
understanding to start actively engineering regular expressions that are
both correct and efficient.

Presentation Skills Training Course - full day tutorial by Damian Conway
Friday 12th October 2012
Venue: Imperial Hotel, Russell Square, London WC1B 5BB
Tutor: Damian Conway

Description: The best and most effective presentations capture the
audience quickly, hold their interest effortlessly, educate and
entertain them in equal measure, and sometimes even inspire them.

This class explores simple and effective techniques for achieving those
goals in any kind of presentation.

The first half of the class focuses on preparation, content selection,
visual design, delivery, handling questions and effective techniques for
presenting various kinds of technical information (code, data,
statistics, charts, structure diagrams etc.)

The second half of the course is an in-depth tutorial on improving the
'look and feel' of presentation materials – especially
Powerpoint/Keynote/Impress presentations. In particular, it demonstrates
practical techniques for making your slides not suck!

Perl School: Object Oriented Programming with Perl and Moose
Sat, 8 Dec, 10:00 - 17:00
Campus London
Tutor: Dave Cross

Moose is fast becoming the standard way to write object oriented code in
Perl. Moose is powerful and flexible. It makes writing object oriented
Perl far easier than it has ever been before.

This low-cost, one-day training course explains what Moose is and how it
will help you write better object oriented Perl. It is aimed at
programmers who know Perl but who might not have kept up to date with
some of the most recent Perl tools.

By the end of the day, attendees will be understand the power of Moose
and will be able to use it to build complex object systems.

London Perl Workshop 2012: Announcement #1

2012-05-23 Thread Mark Keating
It is my great pleasure to announce the date of this year's London Perl
Workshop (the United Kingdom's Perl Workshop), which will be held on:

Saturday 24th November 2012
University of Westminster
Cavendish Square Campus

WHAT IS IT?
The London Perl Workshop is a free one-day conference in central London,
UK. LPW is the UK's Premier Perl Event and so is also known as the
United Kingdom Perl Workshop (UKPW). In 2012

HOW CAN I ATTEND, OR PRESENT A TALK?
If you would like to come then please log in on the site and click that
you will attend, this is an important step for us and our sponsors so we
can judge numbers for the events and activities. If you are not already
registered with Act you can do so on this site, it is free and easy to
do. If you have attended a Perl event recently, with the exception of
YAPC::NA::2012 who maintain their own database, you will probably
already have a login with Act, otherwise you will need to create a new
user first. You can do this by using the links in the navigation menu on
the website which will soon be live on
http://www.londonperlworkshop.org.uk.

If you would like to speak then please submit your talk on the website
as soon as possible - the earlier you submit, the better for the
organisation of the event. If you want to check on specific requirements
or have an idea for a type of talk or event then please contact the
organisers.

IS THERE A THEME?
The theme for the London Perl Workshop will be 25 Years of Perl, and
will focus on the manner in which Perl is used in the commercial world
and the strength of Perl for development in an enterprise environment;
we would also like to see talks on the usage of Perl in the past 25
years and the evolution of the environment. You can use any aspect of
Perl such as Camelia, Rakudo, Raptor, etc. Speakers are invited to talk
on any subject that relates to this theme, though we will also accept
talks on other subjects.

WORKSHOPS?
This year we hope to have access to three workshop rooms and would like
to run as many workshops as possible to introduce new users to the world
of Perl and to refresh the skills of those wishing to engage with the
latest developments in the Perl world. If you wish to submit a workshop
please use the same submission form as the talks, please note that
workshops will typically be 60, 120 or 240 minutes in length.

Proposal Deadline: Friday 19 October 2012
Speaker Notification: Monday 22 October 2012

There will be further announcements detailing the launch of the website,
at which point the call for papers, login and further event details will
be open.

SPONSORSHIP
Each year we are required to fund the conference rooms, lecture theatres
and workshop rooms, as well as arrange and cover the costs for many
other activities normally associated with the London Perl Workshop such
as the famous sponsored beer after the conference. We will once again be
hosted by the Department of Electronic, Communication and Software
Engineering who have secured us a generous discount on the normal
university room rates and who will hopefully play a greater part in the
event this year with activities that coincide with the workshop.

If you wish to sponsor the event we have several basic packages (others
packages may be tailored to your specific needs), please forward this to
all sponsors or persons you feel would be willing to help sponsor this
event:

All Sponsors (minimum sponsorship £250) will receive:

Re: Telecommuting

2011-12-09 Thread Mark Keating
Leo Nails it. Working all the time with large distributed teams means that you
create several virtual water coolersand use chat/query channels for the cup
of tea/break discussions and laid back silliness we all need to keep us
[in]sane.

I add my 2 pence to your 2 cents making a grand total of 5.14 cents.

 working eventually.

An interesting thing for me (as a Technical manager and developer) is
that over time I've come to think that this would only really work if
 the whole team/company was distributed.

It's the passing comments and discussions (we go for a walk twice a
day around the business park lake), the seeing something on someones
screen, or being able to get a quick bit of feedback when you see
someone getting up to make a cup of tea (not to mention being able to
ask for a cup of tea as they do so) that make working with a group of
people onsite so valuable to me.

If you don't have everyone remote then these comments happen... at the
physical water cooler, if everyone is remote then you can create your
virtual water cooler (IRC or what ever).

I think it really does depend on the type of business and projects,
and probably the types of people working on the project.

 Just my 2 cents :)

Dear all, thanks for all the offers.

It seems I have:
Avi - once again bringing extension leads, a couple of metres -should- be fine
though we may need one longer one.

Ranguard, Dorward Castaway - thanks for the offers of tripods, you three
should be enough. Thanks to everyone else who offered to bring theirs along
that was very kind.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday - note that the cameras need to
be set up before the conference starts at 9.20 so if the tripods could be there
for 9 p.m. that'd be excellent.

[ANNOUNCE] LPW2011::Special Announcement::Lightning Talks

2011-11-10 Thread Mark Keating
Each year I force people to submit lightning talks before the event (in
contrast to some events) with the premise that I need to time things,
which is true. Each year people try to squeeze an extra talk in and I
either refuse them or find the time.

This year is no different, wait, this year is different.

There are 4 (four) open Lightning Talk slots that can be grabbed on the
day, they will be on the whim of Léon Bocard which gets accepted as he
is Master of Lightning Talks, and they will only be available from 13:10
onwards (lunch and beyond).

[ANNOUNCE] NWE.pm Hackday 19th November

2011-11-04 Thread Mark Keating

Hello all you jolly people!

Event Wax Sign-up:http://nwe.eventwax.com/hackday-2011

The North West England Perl Mongers will once again be holding a
hackday in the month of November (Saturday 19th) and we invite all and
sundry (or all and sundried) to attend either in person or via virtual
presence using the aether and our channel. The event will start at
10.30-11.00 a.m. (GMT) in the physical location, but may start at any
time in the aether.

The event will once agin be hosted in a physical location at the
Shadowcat Systems offices in Lancaster (UK) and all who attend that
event will have access to a range of free snacks, beer and pizza. If
you can only attend in a virtual manner we invite you to our chat
chnanel, northwestengland.pm, on irc.perl.org where you will be warmly
greeted.

This year we'll be working on two projects!

Presenting Perl [1] aims to make presentations from global Perl events
available in one place, it's kinda like YouTube for Perl presentations

IronMan [2] is intended to serve as a blog agregation service for all
things Perl related providing a window into the Perl community and
it's activities.

Both projects have big and small tasks that are accessible to varying
levels of experience, so don't feel that you can't contribute
something! We're looking at design, documentation and code, any area
needing work.

If you are interested in attending in person, or wish to attend
virtually then please use the Event Wax sign-up linked to at the top
of this discourse. We hope that as many people as possible will join

Ilmari/others...

Sorry to kidnap the thread...

Who will be arranging the pre-LPW public house? It is normally one of
you kind souls from this list who finds an acceptable place for speakers
and attendees to meet up in London. Somewhere close to the venue-ish
that serves food would be lovely. And soon so people can schedule it
would be super also :)

Kind regards

Hi all,

reserved on the ground floor for a change, from 18:30 onwards.

See you there!

Standard blurb:

Social meets are a chance for the various members of the group to meet
up face to face and chat with each other about things - both Perl and
(mostly) non-Perl - and newcomers are more than welcome. The monthly
meets tend to be bigger than the other ad hoc meetings that take place
at other times, and we make sure that they're in easy to get to
locations and the pub serves food (meaning that people can eat in the
bar if they want to). They normally start around 6.30pm (or whenever
people get there after work) and a group tends to be left come closing
time.

If you're a newcomer or other first timer (even if you've been lurking
on the mailing list or on IRC) then please seek our Glorious Leader Leo

new people a drink and introduces them to people.

) and food at the social event after the conference.

We would also like to welcome those of you taking your first steps into
the higher languages and to programming, come along to a conference that
embraces newbies, be prepared for spirited debate and to have your
understanding stretched, but in a friendly way with a beer and a cake of
choice .

The reason we would especially like to welcome you this year (you are
welcome any time) is that there is a glut of companies in the Perlverse
seeking new programmers, some of these companies seek experienced Perl
personnel, but many of them also seek experienced polyglot programmers
as experience of more than one language brings benefits and they have on
the job training where you can use your existing skills while learning
new ones, there are also companies seeking graduates and have graduate
internship programs so this is the right time to brush up your skills in
Perl and see what has changed, and trust me a lot has. So take the
plunge, at the very least you can see some of the new things in a
rival/new language and get a free drink.

If there are companies looking to hire graduates, or who are willing to take
students as interns or on placement for experience then please contact me as
soon as possible so that I can compile a list and place you in touch with Sean

Current sponsors should speak to me immediately.

7. Volunteering on the day
As always I will require a group of people to help me on the day. I already
have some people but I need more. So please email me if you can help, I will
need people to time talks, check videos and place leaflets and banners up
before the conference and help manage the minutiae of organisation. At this
time I have:

Registration/Organisation: Steve Sexton, Chris Jackson and Leigh Keating doing
shifts on Registration for the day

Videos: Mike Whitaker (helping organise but he will also be speaking) - I have
3 video cameras and would like to have 2 more, preferably digital so I can grab
the footage on the day or soon after - I would like to bring as few tripods as
possible, who has the ability to provide more and will help Mike and I on the
day.

Setting up: Me at this moment, so who will join myself and Sean from 8-ish on
the morning of the conference for the mad setup rush.

Lightning Talks: I hate to volunteer him but I will be expecting the
magnificent Leon to help with this again :)
I look forward to hearing from you all

Heretics Meeting with a Shadowcat guest(s) appearance

2011-08-06 Thread Mark Keating
If I understand the metrics correctly the 1st September is a heretics
meeting for London.pm, which is auspicious if true for Matt S. Trout
(mst) and Mark Keating (mdk) will be staying at the Strand in London on
that night and will wander to this meeting. There is also the slim
chance we may persuade Greg to wander with us which Dave Cross may begin
laughing about now (it was Greg's idea we come on a london.pm social

the joke).

Can someone confirm location, and do we count as a special london.pm

[ANNOUNCE] London Perl Workshop 2011 (UKPW): Industrial Strength Perl (#1)

2011-07-26 Thread Mark Keating
 Systems
Sponsors Mark Keating (Organisation), Evening Sponsorship (Beer and Food)
Without Shadowcat I would not have the time and funds to manage the
organisational task that is the LPW, they are my constant guide to
support, promote and aid me if anything goes awry and they love the
community (we really do, PIMC).
Shadowcat Systems is a developer, sponsor of, and contributor to open
source software projects including Catalyst, the elegant web framework,
and DBIx::Class, an object-orientated database abstraction library.
Shadowcat provides consultancy, training and support for these projects;
systems management and automation; the design and implementation of
network architecture; the development of proprietary and open source
custom web applications; and offers Perl refactoring and project crisis
management.
Shadowcat Systems are based in the United Kingdom but we deliver
solutions to a global community of clients via onsite supervision along
with traditional and internet based communications.

SureVOIP
Room 1 (With UK2)
SureVoip are a business focused VOIP service with a strong dedication to
providing Open Telecoms for Business. This is the first time they have
sponsored the LPW directly though they were involved with us last year
and we welcome them as they sponsor room 1 with UK2.

UK2.Net
Room 1 (with SureVoip), Training Room, Evening Sponsorship (Beer and Food)
Another new sponsor to the London Perl Workshop this year is UK2.net,
and like Moonfruit they decided to give us a generous fund to start
their association with our event. Sponsoring the training room, a room
with SureVoip and contributing funds towards the evenings food and drink
(which I believe will now match the wonderful event we had last year).
It is great to welcome them on board for this year.
UK2.net likes Perl, our entire platform is based on it, helping us to
service hundreds of thousands of customers enjoying some of the best
pricing for domains, web hosting and dedicated servers out there. We've
been one of the largest players in the industry since 1998 and we've
just launched a new VPS service allowing you to buy resources and launch
as many smaller VPS as you wish on our cloud. These have auto failover,
root access, an external console and loads more goodies for just £8.95 a
month. No need to tell you this is ideal for dev environments where you
need to kill and redeploy your server in an instant. The platform even
allows you to create your own virtual machine templates or choose from
one of our instantly deployable stacks. Not bad for less than a tenner.

University of Westminster
Hosts, Sean Tohill (Organisation)
It is a complex and evolutionary time for UK Universities and one in
which the boundaries of their operational existence must change. it is
unfortunate that this means we have to find more sponsorship to cover
room costs (though this was benefited by us attracting some awesome
sponsors), however we were still given a generous discount.
Then there is Sean who has supported us for many years and gives his
time and effort into securing appropriate dates, rooms and running as an
interface buffer between us and the university. Again, for me Sean is a
staple part of the LPW buffet and one that I look forward to each year.
This year will be no different I am sure.

That is all for this inaugural newsletter, more information can be found
on the conference website and you will be kept up to date in future
newsletters.

are a member of such a group, or a leader then we would be happy to hear
from you and to work with you to invite your community to this event. We
are still seeking keynote speakers who may be able to gain sponsorship
to the event.

that you know of or to any interested parties. If you have an idea for a
small event to be run in conjunction to this event, such as a hackathon

[ANNOUNCE] Google Summer of Code: Students and Members needed

2011-03-21 Thread Mark Keating

Hi All, [1]

As you all know the Google Summer of Code gives students the chance to
involve themselves with an open source project and this year the efforts
on behalf of The Perl Foundation (TPF) are being run by Florian Ragwitz
(Rafl).

The first stage of this process (the accepting of the mentoring
organisation) has passed and the TPF have been accepted. You can now
visit http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/org/show/google/gsoc2011/tpf to
view more details.

I am now asking for your help in spreading the message about the TPF and
in looking for students to join in with this year's event. If you could
pass this message on to any mailing list you are on, or share it with
appropriate locations so that we can make this year the most successful
year for Perl ever it would be much appreciated.

The main site for the Google Summer of Code is:
http://www.google-melange.com/, a timeline for participation can be
found at
http://www.google-melange.com/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2011/timeline.
As you can see the student participation period opens on 28th March, so
we have just one week to get the word around.

Some prospective project ideas for this year can be found at:
http://epo.means.no/gsoc2011/ideas, though i must stress that a student
can suggest any idea they wish to the mentoring org.

If anyone wishes to join in and be a mentor for this year then please
contact Rafl a.s.a.p.

Thanks

-Mark

[ANNOUNCE] Speakers at a conference

**Firstly let me apologise in advance if you see multiple copies of this email
as it is posted to more than one list**

I am seeking to poll the collective geekverse with this question:

If you could see one speaker at a dynamic languages conference who would it
be?

The speaker can be from any dynamic language (such as Perl/Python/Ruby/PhP and
even languages such as Lisp/OCaml/Haskell/Erlang) and doesn't have to be the
language creator (for instance you may choose Audrey instead of Larry Wall for
Perl) and you can answer your favourite for more than one language if you wish.

Just reply to m.keating(at)shadowcat.co.uk with your answer stating:

language, name of speaker

[ANNOUNCE] LPW2010: Newsletter #8: Thoughts for the Day

2010-12-01 Thread Mark Keating

In this Newsletter:

1. The New Venue
2. Helping with setting up
3. Video Equipment
4. Laptop Loans
5. Talk timing

1. The New Venue
In case it has skipped your notice, or if you haven't yet been informed
the venue for the conference on Saturday has been moved from the
Universities Cavendish Campus to the Marylebone Campus:

University of Westminster
Marylebone Campus
35 Marylebone Road
London
NW1 5LS

If you could make sure that this information is spread as broadly as
possible so that we have no lost speakers/attendees on Saturday I would
be most grateful.

2. Helping with setting up
As last year a certain level of preparation is required for the
conference, most of which is done on the morning of the event and as in
every other year this is done entirely by volunteers. If you are able to
be at either Cavendish Square from 8 a.m. or Marylebone from 8.20 a.m.
to help with moving sponsorship items/setting up rooms and equipment
then your help would be gratefully appreciated.

3. Video Equipment
This year Shadowcat Systems will be videoing all three of the rooms for
the conference. If you sit near/in front of this video equipment could
you please follow some common sense steps during the presentation:

a. try not to talk too loudly near/in front of the equipment;
b. refrain from touching the equipment unless asked to by the organisers;
c. do not wave large pieces of paper or sponsorship items in front of
the lens;

d. don't perform mime during the presentation in front of the lens;
e. if you must do karaoke please do so during the breaks, where song and
dance routines will also be appreciated.

If anyone has an extension they can bring on the day (I will need 3) to
help with the placing of cameras then that would be great, please
respond in this email.

4. Laptop Loans
Two of our presenters have requested a loan of a laptop for their talk
on the day. Their requirements are:

1. Any laptop (el Penguin) with any OS to present on, he will make a pdf
of his talk if necessary.
2. An Ubuntu install 10.4 if possible with Perl installed and some CPAN
modules. This can be a virtual instance running under a different OS if
possible.

If any speakers/attendees can help in this then your immediate response
is required.

5. Talk timing

In each room there will be three numbered sheets (10 minutes, 5 minutes,
1 minute) if you see these sheets and feel that you wish to help the
speaker then could you please time the talk and use them at the
appropriate point (last 10/5/1 minute). This will hopefully keep us on
schedule. Remember that you are being videoed so don't wave them
gleefully in the air. If no one volunteers could the speakers please
volunteer someone from their captive audience for the task ;).

As always I would like to thank you all in advance for any/all the
cooperation you give and look forward to seeing you all on the day.

Kind regards

[ANNOUNCE] IMPORTANT: London Perl Workshop: Venue Change

2010-11-25 Thread Mark Keating

Dear All,

I have been informed by the university that there will be a change of
venue on the 4th December, there has not been a full explanation at this
time except to say there will be no power in the Cavendish Campus. We
will therefore be moving location to:

University of Westminster
Marylebone Campus
35 Marylebone Road
London
NW1 5LS

The venue is across the road from Baker Street Tube Station and opposite
Madame Tussauds. It is a short (10 minute) walk from the previous
location. My thanks go to Sean at the University who has been invaluable
in securing us a new location and organising the rooms at the venue.

Please could you spread this information to as many people as possible
so that everyone is aware of the changes.

Because material for the conference must be stored at the Cavendish
Campus I will be seeking someone who can either:

a. provide a car
b. hire a small van (refunded/paid for by the organisers)
c. Organise enough taxis (paid for by the organisers)

And to drive it/help organise the move of material on the day between
the two venues. If more than one individual can help that would be amazing.

Could all sponsors sending material please send them to the original
agreed locations, the material will be moved for your usage/distribution
on the day.

Kind regards

Your-evil-overlord-organiser-with-a-sudden-headache

[ANNOUNCE] LPW2010: Newsletter #7: Presentations and Merchandise

2010-11-19 Thread Mark Keating
The hustings are over and all the votes are cast...wait, sorry wrong
newsletter. Greetings fellow watchers of all things LPW2010'ey' in this
Newsletter:

1. Presentations
2. Merchandise

1. Presentations.
The speakers who submitted talks for LPW2010 have all now been informed
of their talks acceptance, thanks to those of you who have submitted the
quality as always was high and the choice of which talks to accept was
made pleasurable by the good range of subjects offered. If you have had
a talk accepted then please make sure you accept this on the website,
their will be a schedule made this weekend so if all those who have
received a confirmation email could respond that would be fantastic. If
you have submitted a talk and received no email whatsoever (as to
whether the talk was accepted or rejected) then please contact Mark
immediately.

2. Merchandise
As mentioned in a previous email there is a superb range of items for
sale at:

http://shadowcat.spreadshirt.co.uk/lpw2010-C171223

I urge you to order soon to avoid the disappointment of the order
arriving long after the event has finished. Please note that there are
three pages of items and the colours can be customised to suit ones
mood. The London Perl Workshop is a free event supported entirely by the
sponsorship of the Perl community so we do not supply a conference
t-shirt except through this method of
buy-your-own-and-get-the-colour-and-size-you-like promotion. The items
will be available for a limited time after the event and then consigned
to the lost bucket of time, so don't miss this chance to own some
singular apparel.[1]

That's all for this rather brief newsletter, until next time

-Mark (mdk) - extreme-overlord-of-organising

[1] Those of you not in one of these magnificent items of apparel will
surely feel disappointed on the day when you are out-dressed by a small
child :).

[ANNOUNCE] Newsletter #6: Talk Submission Deadline

2010-11-12 Thread Mark Keating

Greetings one and all,

As you all know the talk submission deadline is this evening at
midnight, but I notice that we still have very few lightening talks
submitted, so in order for you all to get your Lightening-Talk boots on
(and of course to give others a chance to submit longer talks) I urge
you to submit soon, I will extend the talk deadline until midnight on
Monday 15th November. the field is still wide open for the coveted
*Keynote Slot* so try to think on our theme - it could be your talk that
makes the cut.

As you may also be aware from previous newsletters there is a Lightening
Talk Bingo being run at the same time as the talks and that presenters
are banned from participating, but fear not if this is putting you off
from participation in the talks as there is a similar valued prize being
awarded for best lightening talk as judged by the audience. So you will
not be left out of the prizes. I might also remind all potential
submitters that the kind chaps at Nestoria will be handing out prizes
once again this year that are extra to the ones I have just mentioned
above. Please note that there will be no room for submitting talks after
this deadline.

Prizes, a free conference, free beer, free food, our sponsors love you,
love them back.

I look forward to reading the flood of submissions.

[ANNOUNCE] LPW2010: Newsletter #5: Talk Submissions and a Caution

2010-11-09 Thread Mark Keating

In this Newsletter:

1. Talk Submissions
2. A Caution

1. Talk Submissions
This is to remind you all that the deadline for Talk Submissions is
rapidly approaching (12th November) so if you want to submit a talk,
including a lightning talk then you had best to get your skates on and
submit right now.

2. A Caution
It was brought to my attention that one (and possibly more but this
could all be fruitless hearsay) person last year didn't attend the
conference just the social afterwards, perhaps hoping to capitalise on
the free beer and food. Personally I cannot believe this would happen,
but to prevent tittle-tattle and to exercise my rights as
extreme-overlord-of-organising I shall declare that this year a drink or
food shall only be given to those persons with a conference badge. This
will satisfy two main aims:

a. It will get you all to register.
b. It will cause SlayerXP more overhead as he will have to do the
checking of the badges.
c. We'll be able to recognise others, and ourselves, by the name tags on
our necks.

d. It may stop the tittle-tattle.
e. We'll look like a bunch of tourists.
f. I just like thinking up lists of things.
g. The lanyards can be used to lasso a kebab at three in the morning.
h. There is no h.

(Please pick your own two main aims)

The conference will be held on Saturday 4th December at the University
of Westminster's New Cavendish Campus. Please visit the website below

[ANNOUNCE] LPW2010: Newsletter 3: Hack and Train (formerly known as Slash)

2010-10-13 Thread Mark Keating

 In this newsletter:

1. LPW2010 Hackathon
2. Training: Modern Web Programming in Perl

1. LPW 2010 Hackathon

Tom Doran, known to many of you as the Catalyst release manager and t0m
on many IRC channels, has decided to run a hackathon on the Sunday
following the conference. You can find more details and how to register
here:

http://lpw2010hackathon.eventbrite.com/

Please look at the bottom of this newsletter for more information taken
from the eventbrite site. If anyone else wishes to host a hackathon
(i.e. if the places fill up on this event) then please let me know. Tom
has decided that it will be an open event where people can hack on any
project they wish.

2. Training: Modern Web Programming in Perl

Once again the magnificent Dave Cross, under the guise of his Training
Company Magnum Solutions (http://mag-sol.com/) will be conducting a
training session at the Workshop. The places will be initially offered
to students of the university but there will no doubt be room for other
attendees as in previous years.

The subject this year is Modern Web Programming in Perl, Dave has
indicated that a good percentage will be based around Plack. If you are
new to Perl and web programming or new to Plack and Modern Perl
development and deployment this class will be a must-see.

The biggest draw is Dave Cross himself an experienced Perl programmer
and excellent tutor who commands good rates for his training courses.
Once again this year we are presenting a free class for attendees. The
class will take 120-180 minutes on the day, more details to be announced.

-Mark (mdk)

London hackspace:

On Sunday 6th December, London Hackspace will be pleased to hold a
hackathon for any perl hackers who would like to get together and work
on projects or continue socialising on the day after the conference.
This hackathon doesn't have a specific topic, so anyone working on
anything is welcome.

Power, Wifi and space will be graciously hosted by the London hackspace,
a non-profit hacker space in central London. This event is free (but
*very limited capacity*), but if you attend, please make a donation to
the space for what you think it is worth.

http://london.hackspace.org.uk/

Hope to see some of you there!

Cheers

Tomas (t0m) Doran

[ANNOUNCE] LPW2010 Newsletter 2: Give a Perler a home for Xmas

2010-10-11 Thread Mark Keating
Welcome to the 2nd Newsletter for the London Perl Workshop. In this
newsletter:

1. Give a Perler a Home

1. Give a Perler a Home
As I have spoken about before it would be really nice this year if we
could offer crash space[1] to people who wish to attend the conference
from overseas or distant locales in the UK and who cannot afford both
travel and accommodation. I feel that many more people will be able to
attend and also this would forge new and interesting relationships
between people who only know each other by reputation or by nickname on
irc/mailing lists.

Two such people, Ribasushi and Getty, are looking for crash space for a
couple of nights (night before and night of the conference I believe)
in/near London so they can attend the conference. If you can put these
stirling chaps up for a night or two then please add your names to the
LPW wiki or use a mailing list to coordinate, I am happy to act as
go-between for those of you who wish to offer in private. Ribasushi and
Getty can be split and are both toilet trained.

Thanks in advance.

-Mark (mdk)

[1] There doesn't literally have to have been a crash at the location
they are to stay. Beds would be nice, comfy sofas are just as
appreciated, washing lines are probably a little too satirical.

This is not a reference to anyone...honest...

So it appears that I failed to give out some reference material in the

in a positive manner[2].

In this newsletter:

1. Date of the conference and location
2. Call for papers - date and schedule

1. Date of the Conference

2. A call for new sponsors.
3. A call for the Job fair.
4. Merchandise.

6. Volunteers.

2. New Sponsors.
The London Perl Workshop is looking for new sponsors to join with us,
this can range from companies who wish to contribute towards the event
and the community to companies who merely wish to show their support of
the premier event in the UK Perl Community calendar or may wish to hand
out promotional material.
If you know a company that would like to be involved with the event then
please do not hesitate in contacting Mark.

3. Job Fair.
This year we are hoping to host a job fair at the Workshop that is
suitable for companies looking to hire new developers or for those
companies who are thinking of running internships/apprenticeships and
wish to meet up with the students and future developers who may attend.
If you know of a company seeking developers or wishing to promote their
internships/apprenticeships then please contact Mark.

4. Mechandise.
As always we try to keep the spirit of a free conference when we think
of the London Perl Workshop, which is why, once again there is a range
of merchandise available from Spreadshirt.net at this address for you to
purchase prior to attending or in a mad bid afterward to show you were
there:

http://shadowcat.spreadshirt.co.uk/lpw2010-C171223

(Note: there is more than one page of merchandise, at this time there
are three).

If you are thinking of attending the conference then what better way of
showing your participation and allegiance than in a snazzy custom item
of clothing or merchandise. If you think of an item you would like to
see us make available in the shops then make your suggestions and we
will see what we can do to accommodate you. Attending the event while
not robed in an item from this fantastic collection will forever mark
you and you may carry that stigma to your grave.

5. Lightening Talk Bingo.
That incredible man, Edmund von der Burg, has this year decided to run a
special Bingo event during the Lightening Talks, there will be at least
one prize from one of our sponsors, more details will become available
at a later date. Participation will be free except for organisers and
speakers who will be banned from participation (unless they let me in on
any betting scandals they have going ;) ).

6. Volunteers.
As always I am seeking help from volunteers on the day. If you think you
would be willing to help set up the event, carry items, shuttle speakers
to talks or time them to prevent the inevitable 'running-over', or
operate video capture devices, then please contact Mark.
Also this year my wonderful wife will be sat on registration, but as an
added bonus she will be also be attending to our son, Benjamin, if you
would be willing to sit at the registration desk and cover for the
occasional period in the day then please contact mark.

Don't forget to register for the conference and submit your talk. The
competition for most appropriate 40 minute talk that will be the keynote
is still wide open.

Until next time, your organiser,

[ANNOUNCE] London Perl Workshop 2010

2010-09-13 Thread Mark Keating

It is my pleasure and joy to announce the London Perl Workshop for 2010.

*When and Where:*
The London Perl Workshop will once again be held at the University of
London's Cavendish Campus on Saturday 4th December 2010. I would like to
thank Sean Tohill at the University for all of his efforts in securing
us the venue.

*Theme:*
This years theme is Perl Flavours. We would like to accept talks and
workshops that centre around the notion of a variety of Perl languages
and implementations such as Camelia, Rakudo and Raptor. As always
speakers can submit talks on any subject, but talks that focus on our
theme will be given a higher priority during any selection process.

*Website:*
The website will be live very soon on
http://conferences.yapceurope.org/lpw2009/ !

*
Keynote:*
In addition to the fun of submitting a talk, one of the speakers,
submitting a talk of 40 minutes, may be selected to give this years
Keynote speech. To add a little excitement the talk that best fits this
years theme (potentially given by a known experienced speaker, but that
is not a condition) will be chosen for the honoured place as the
keynote. If you have any questions or queries then please do not
hesitate to ask.

*
Volunteers:*
As always we would appreciate a number of volunteers to help with a
variety of tasks during the day. If you think you can help and would
like to be one of these brave souls then please let Mark know as soon as
possible. Some of the volunteers will be needed for:

/*Setting up:*/ Making sure the venue is set up in the early morning
(around 8-8.30) and helping with the placing of signs, tables, and the
arrangment of sponsorship items and registration.

/*Talks:*/ A volunteer is needed in each room to time the talk and hold
up an appropriate sign warning the speaker of how long they have left,
this can be composed from a list of people who are definitely attending
a talk (as opposed to an all day volunteer) once the schedule goes up.
An alternate idea is to get the speakers in each room to nominate a
member of the audience as the timer - this will be used if people
believe it is the best option.

/*Video:*/ There will be video cameras in each of the lecture halls and
suitable volunteers are needed to control the cameras, make sure the
talks are recorded and give harsh looks to anyone making a noise near
the cameras microphone (the use of non-harmful projectile weaponry is
being considered ;) ).

This year we will be asking all presenters to provide their slides as:

Presentation (Open Office or Keynote)
Bitmap image, jpeg, gif png etc.
SVG
Screencast
Video format (mpeg etc., - must be timed to fit the presentation though!)

Slides will be added to the video of the speakers in post production to
provide the best possible experience. Once again contact mdk if you have
any questions or queries.

All speakers will be asked to sign a Creative Commons Licence for the
usage of their presentations. This usage will simply be to promote the
conference, Perl community and the Perl language, the videos will be
available on sites such as PresentingPerl.org and if possible YAPC.tv.

*Sponsors:*
As with each year the London Perl Workshop aims to be a 'free' event for
those people who attend it. With that in mind we seek each year for a
range of sponsors to help support us. If you work for a company that is
using Perl who you believe would benefit from the exposure they would
gain from being a sponsor of this event then please contact Mark
immediately.

We are looking for new sponsors each year and new ways in which to
enhance their profile and further our event. So please do not hesitate
to contact us with a sponsorship idea.

As always a group of sponsors have already come forward to set up the
sponsored 'free' beer at the after-venue event. We will let you know
of the details in a future email.

*Accommodation:*
Each year there is a spur to find cheap rooms in London and with some it
is a matter of being given a spare bed/sofa from the local Mongers
living in and around London. If you have a spare bed or can put up a
fellow Perler for a couple of nights around the conference place
yourself on the wiki once it is launched and lets see if we can lessen
the cost and broaden the uptake for our conference. If you are looking
to try and get to the conference and the barrier is accommodation place
your name on the same page and we can hope that someone will offer you a
place to rest your weary head.

*Announce:*
Please forward this mail to any appropriate list that it does not appear on.

As always any communication concerning the workshop can be sent to Mark
Keating (m.keating(at)shadowcat.co.uk).

Your cooperation and participation is, as always, greatly appreciated.

[ANNOUNCE] send-a-newbie scheme for YAPC::EU 2010

2010-06-03 Thread Mark Keating
This is just a reminder to say that anyone contemplating attending the next
YAPC::EU on this list who would benefit from extra funds from the send-a-newbie
scheme should apply as soon as possible to the address listed at:

http://www.send-a-newbie.enlightenedperl.org/applications.html

Make sure to answer all the questions. The offer is open to everyone so don't
hesitate. Also make sure you re-post to all and every list the two emails I
sent out previously, the text and details can be found at:

http://mdk.per.ly/2010/05/06/send-a-newbie-2/

I am relying on you all to take notice and do some action on this.

Thanks and regards

[ANNOUNCE] Send-A-Newbie, requests for donations

2010-05-04 Thread Mark Keating
Last year many individuals and companies donated money to the send-a-newbie
initiative run by Edmund von der Burg. It was a great success. At the end of
last year Edmund approached the EPO with the task of organising a similar event
this year as he was unable to because of other commitments.

Therefore I come to you all to ask you to donate once again to this excellent
project, please make a donation at send-a-newbie.enlightenedperl.org (or send
your donation to send-a-new...@paypal.com). If you made a donation last year, I
thank you and would gratefully ask for you to do so once more.[1]

If you are new to this idea allow me a few moments to describe it.

The send-a-newbie scheme will allow people to attend a Perl conference
(YAPC::EU for us, and this year YAPC::NA will have a scheme organised by the
Perl Foundation) if:

a. they have never attended a YAPC/Major Perl event previously;
b. they are financially unable to do so;
c. they work in/study/use Perl.

The only changes we have made to the terms of entry this year is to broaden the
scope. The Enlightened Perl Organisation members voted that we manage this
initiative on the sole condition that it was open to all people regardless of
age or circumstance (there were some minor restrictions in the previous year
that did not reflect our requirements).

This year we will be listing our sponsors on the website to express our
thanks[2] and because we believe in openess of information. A list of names
will appear that people can admire and give respect[3]. If you would like to/do
donate and don't want your name listed then please contact Mark or Rosellyne
and let them know and they will ensure that you are not listed.

Thanks for your consideration, and thanks-in-advance to those who are
considering donating.

Kind regards

Mark
Secretary to the EPO

p.s. If you know of any list, forum where this information might be posted then
I would kindly ask that you repeat it there.

p.p.s Sorry if this is a repost for some of you (or you see multiple copies of
it) - please do not let you stop from donating.

[1] Please, please, pretty please on bended knees :)

[2] An almost exact opposite of name and shame.

[3] Also they can perhaps feel sickened that they were too jaded to support
such a great idea.

[ANNOUNCE] Send-A-Newbie, notice to apply for funding

2010-05-04 Thread Mark Keating
The application process for the Send-a-Newbie initiative to allow participation
at YAPC::EU::2010, which allows applicants to attend who would otherwise be
unable due to financial constraints, is now open.

Please go to: http://www.send-a-newbie.enlightenedperl.org/applications.html
for more information on how to apply.

Please note that the only condition is that you have not attended a YAPC or
major Perl Workshop previously. No constraint on age, experience etc., is made.

If you know of any mailing list that this notice may be displayed then please
forward the contents/repeat the information there.

If you wish to donate to this initiative then please visit:

 Hi!

I'm writing to you from Amsterdam where the Booking.com headquarters are
located. I'm working in the recruitment team of the company, and I'm
currently working with my colleagues on finding new Developers to join our
company. Our company is growing and thus we are looking for several
Developers (preferably Perl Developers). I am contacting you because I would
like to see if it's possible to sponsor your Perl site and in exchange put a
banner (with a link to our career site) on your site? We have the banner
ready already, so you would just need to put it up in your site, in exchange
to a monetary compensation of course.

Please let me know if this is something you are interested in! I can be
reached by email and also by phone.

Kind regards,

[ANNOUNCE] Update Five[1]

2009-11-24 Thread Mark Keating

Greeting one and all. In this update:

1. All about food,
2. there will be prizes...
3. and free goodies
4. for 140 of those that register
5. and in the evening...

1. All about food
Due to the very generous nature of our sponsors this year's London Perl
Workshop will have a wonderful buffet in the evening. This should make
previous year's simple fare pale into the background as a veritable
cornucopia of delights are paraded for hungry workshoppers to feast
upon. Coupled with the almost obligatory free ales, as also supplied by
our sponsors, should see us well catered for in almost every regard.

2. there will be prizes...
Once again the wonderful chaps from Nestoria will be awarding prizes on
the day for the 'Best Of' workshop events. If you were with us last year
you will recall that these will most likely be some quality book or
other grand item. Prizes will be awarded after the lightning talks are
finished.

3. and free goodies
But fear not if you do not get a prize as there will be a raft of free
goodies at this year's event. Once again we have managed to procure fun
items for you to take home as keepsakes, though there is one small catch

4. for 140 of those that register
The conference bags of goodies will be limited to the first 140 people
who attend and are signed up beforehand to the event. There will be a
spare few items over that number that will be free for all to take, but
the pre-made bags are restricted to signed-up people only.

5. and in the evening...
Don't forget to register on the wiki for the evening so we can judge
numbers please. Also, in order to prevent random people wandering into
the pub and taking drinks/food, we may have to evict people who do not
have an official workshop badge (not Perl people of course but Lardy
London Layabouts), so do please sign up.

And that wraps it up for this Update. The Schedule is now online and
fixed so sign up to your favourite talks. Don't forget to buy a t-shirt
soon as they take 4-6 days to deliver (business days) and I look forward
to seeing you all in London on the 3rd or the 5th.

[ANNOUNCE] London Perl Workshop: Call for Papers

2009-11-09 Thread Mark Keating

Hi All,

Just to remind you all that there is less than 35 hours to submit
presentations to the London Perl Workshop, so if you are planning on
presenting now is the time to get your abstracts into:

http://conferences.yapceurope.org/lpw2009/newtalk

If you are in a rush, submit a short abstract that you can flesh out later.

Also, I feel compelled to remind you all that Spreadshirt use the Royal
Mail to post their parcels so with the current and future planned postal
disruptions and the oncoming silly season of Amazonmas (TM) if you wish
to have a t-shirt for LPW I would advise that you order early.

That's all.

Workshop Update #2

2009-10-27 Thread Mark Keating

Hi all.

In this update you will find:

1. A reminder of the submission dates
2. A call for assistance

1. Submission Dates
The date for submissions of Papers/Articles/Presentations/Rants for the
London Perl Workshop is rapidly approaching. A talk/presentation may be
5, 20 or 40 minutes in length and ideally should be on Begining Perl,
but as always we accept articles on any aspect of Perl. This year we are
also allowing people to submit suggestions for workshops if they wish.
There will also be a panel (currently starring Ed Freyfogle, Dave Cross)
seeking to answer questions on skills in the workplace and what
employers want from a programmer. If you would like to sit on this panel
please let Mark know as soon as possible. We hope to attract more
students/new people to the workshop and this event will be aimed at
them, but open to all.

The closing date for submissions is 5th November so get your submissions
ready.

2 A call for assistance
As last year I am hoping to video as many of the
talks/presentations/proceedings as possible. I will hopefully be able to
capture all the information in the main room but am asking for
assistance in videoing places I may miss. If you intend to bring a video
camera/record events then please let me know as soon as you can so that
between us we may be able to video as much of the Workshop as possible
and then make it available on YAPC.tv.

As always offers of assistance for the day are also gratefully accepted.

Kind regards

Mark Keating

London Perl Workshop 2009

2009-09-17 Thread Mark Keating

Dear All,

It is with great pleasure, and with some tardiness and lack of
expedience, that I announce the London Perl Workshop to be held on
Saturday 5^th December at the University of Westminster's New Cavendish
Campus.[1]

The theme for this year is Beginning Perl, which can be taken as Perl
for beginners if one so wishes, or aimed at people new to Perl who are
fluent in another language, or in fact any variant theme that one can
conjecture including beginning a CPAN module, projects that are
fun/welcoming/reliant on beginners (and also we expect some of you to
ignore this all together and submit as you feel).

The call for papers is now open and the website should be live very soon
(if someone grabs Monsieur Cholet and shouts into his ear it will be
sooner). The closing date for submission will be Friday 6^th November
(of this year obviously) and notification will arrive on Monday 16^th
November.

As always the London Perl Workshop is a totally free event solely
supported by the efforts and goodwill of the community. If you would
like to help in any manner or organise an event to coincide with this
then please contact Mark Keating. There has already been an offer to
find a venue for the public house for the customary workshop
socialisation which will be handled by the erudite Mister Laver. But
many other things can be done to help.

The event will once again welcome Josette of O'Reilly who will bring a
good range of books with her at the usual discounts, so bring lots of
money and a small mule to carry home your purchases.

Once again I would ask that if anyone has a video camera and intends to
video an event we get together on the wiki and work out a possible
coverage. If we then use the auspicious YAPC.TV website we may get the
entire conference uploaded for the whole community to enjoy. Please feel
free to use the wiki to start any organisation of this manner and ping
mdk on irc or mail m.keat...@shadowcat.co.uk to let me know and I will
attempt to find other volunteers to make this easier.

So enter the date in your diary, sharpen your presenting wit or prepare
to attend the best event in the calendar™.[3]

[1] Though please note that part of the delay in this formal
announcement is the negotiation for the venue with a new Dean. Sean as
always is in our corner and with luck I will be able to confirm the
venue. If not then I believe we will be holding it in Dave Cross' house
where he has promised to hold a barbecue and roast a organiser or two.[2]

[2] This may, or may not, be true.

[3] Okay this one probably isn't true, but I would invite all detractors
to first argue this with the proud and upstanding folk of London.pm,
bring beer money you'll need it.

Regards

London Perl Workshop - update

Just after the last message was sent that enormously excellent chap Sean

venue is booked, arms are appropriately twisted, beer is flowing into
pipes and the rooms are being secured.

Three cheers are in order I think :)

5th December, New Cavendish Campus, be there or be a deformed circle.

I have 2 talks on my own video camera, but that was perched on

probably a total of about an hours footage, which is annoying for

LPW 2008

2008-12-02 Thread Mark Keating

Hello All,

Well the event is over, the passions have finally quelled and the images
that cannot be repeated in polite conversation have just started to
drain from the retina to which they were burnt.

I wanted to take a quick moment to say thanks once again to all those
who helped out with LPW, our Sponsors, the university, the speakers, the
chaps who sat and recorded hours of video (that I must now edit and
compress) and finally to all of you. At the count on the website 183
people were registered for this year's event, and from our best-guess
fugures we came close to seeing that many of you (we estimate circa
170-5). I hope you all had a great time.

Now, All Hail the new Chief. I look forward to the coming year, and
perhaps to even helping out with this august event once again.

And now, to work, to organisation and (with more haste than people
perhaps would like) to video.

Thanks all.

Workshop Registration

2008-11-25 Thread Mark Keating

Hello fellow Mongers Perl,

Registration for the London Perl Workshop will take place on the day of
the venue (do I really have to remind you all it's this Saturday) at the
venue itself and will start at 8.30 a.m.. I will be able to discuss your
intention to come the day before but I will not have the Lanyards until
the day so there will be no pre-signing. I would ask you all to sign up
please as it is a requirement of the fire regulations and to my
obsessive need to have a long list of names.

Thanks :)

London Perl Workshop

2008-11-24 Thread Mark Keating

Hello to the many Mongers of Perl and their associates :0

The London Perl Workshop is now less than 6 days away and as the tension
mounts, and my fingernails get short, I thought I'd write to you all
with some last details.

Technology:
We will be attempting to record the talks this year so that they may be
suitably displayed on the internets for all those unable to come. We
have -just- about enough cameras but if anyone wants to share some of
the load please let me know asap and we can add you in (cameras,
volunteer camera operators). Also if you have a tripod for a camera (but
not a video recorder) we may need your help (if you happen to have radio
mikes, vcr and a production board that'd be lovely :) ). Let me know
today/tommorow.

Speakers:
I will be putting a page on the Wiki for you to add links:
http://conferences.yapceurope.org/lpw2008/wiki?node=SpeakersLinks
Please fill this with links to your slides/presentations that you want
people to look at before and after the conference, fill in your own name
and details of presentation - try to do this in alphabetical order of
last name please.

Attendees:
Could you all make sure that if you are going to attend you sign up to
the event on the website by 12.00 Wednesday. I will be generating a list
from this and will need it as:

a. Part of the Fire regulations
b. If I make childish kindergarden stickers with balloons and your names
on them :)

Stands:
There (should/will/has)+(be/been) a stand from O'Reilly at the
conference where we have been promised a 35% discount, so come prepared
to go away with a plethora of dead tree trinkets.
There will also be a stand representing ActionAid (who will also be
giving a lightning talk). Investor Dynamics are graciously sponsoring a
raffle, and for those of you who have not seen the news page there are
some great prizes (Canon 1000D/Acer Aspire Netbook/Ipod Nano 16gb/10
fantastic SC T-shirts), you'll be able to buy tickets throughout the day
and the raffle will be held in the evening. IDL will also match the
first £600 we raise on the day.

Beerage:
As last year Venda are leading the way towards sponsoring an
after-the-event drink by placing a sum of money behind the bar. If you
work for a company who would also like to do the same and add to the
'pot', then let me know and I will arrange details.

Looking forward to seeing you all there and now back to the minutae of
my existence.

Mark

[ANNOUNCE] LPW: Call for Volunteers: Technical Equipment

2008-11-14 Thread Mark Keating

Hello All,
With only two weeks to go I once again come profferring my begging cap
to all and sundry regarding technical equipment/expertise for the 2008 LPW.

It would be really great if we could video the three lecture rooms (be
even better if we could rustle up people/equipment to live stream it -
but that's a possibility for maybe other years), and to that case we
will need video cameras - possibly microphones -radio mics especially-
(or cameras that can connect into the university systems) -
technical/photographically minded individuals (and if one of you works
for a company that has a lot of this stuff and has a perchant for a
kindly loan of equipment and even expertise that'd be perfect - surely
somebody works at the BBC - can we not get J. Ross' people, they must be
bored as he's on suspension).

Anyway, enough of the pipe dream, we need equipment and people to help
video the event so that we can share it with the wider community. Think
not what your wrokshop can do for you, (you know the rest)...

Responses to mdk -at- shadowcat.co.uk

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Mark

[ANNOUNCE] LPW and Action Aid

2008-11-10 Thread Mark Keating

Dear Perl Mo[u]nguers,

One of the sponsors for the LPW, Investor Dynamics Limited, has decided
to promote and provide as their sponsorship a raffle on behalf of Action
Aid: http://www.actionaid.org.uk/. In this capacity they are putting
forward a first prize of a Canon 1000D Camera with 18-55 IS lens, there
will be other prizes (to be announced in due course), IDL has also
kindly offered to match the first £600 pounds raised for the charity.

If anyone would like to buy tickets before the event, or would like to
buy tickets because they are not attending, they may do so. I will
accept cheques made payable to Action Aid for this regard and will
assign numbers to a person based on this. A list of pre-bought tickets
will be published (with initials to protect identity) before and during
the event and a list of winning numbers printed afterwards in this manner:

http://www.markkeating.me.uk/lpw2008/raffle/raffle.html

The address to send cheques to is:

Mark Keating
Shadowcat Systems Limited
The Barracks
South Road
Lancaster
LA1 4XQ

A receipt can be made out upon request. All correspondence will be
available for monitoring by Action Aid. Action Aid will be at the
Workshop to draw the tickets.

Thanks all.

Regards

Mark

LPW2008: Call for Volunteers

2008-11-05 Thread Mark Keating

Dear Perl Mo[u]nguers,

This London Perl Workshop, like so many previos years Perl Workshops
relies upon a healthy team of volunteers, both tall and short, wide and
thin, up and down and in and out, with no exception. Therefore if you
would like to participate in this magnificent event by profferring a
little of your time it would be much appreciated.

The basic requirement is a willingness to be subjected to totaliatrian
rule with little reward...I mean of course to fun, laughter, skiing in
Kloisters and bathing in Monaco...tbh it will mostly involving herding
speakers and helping them to set up - so some people with technical
experience of computers ( \o/ ) would be appreciated (which is all of
you, I think).

Please contact mdk(a)shadowcat.co.uk if you'd like to help, in fact even
if you wouldn't like to help lets go for it anyway.

On a secondary note, it would be nice if we could video as many of the
talks as possible for YAPC TV, I am sure that amongst us we know enough
budding Luc Besson's who have a passion for video-ing. If this just
means we get enough 'loans' of video recorders and people willing to
spend a few hours capturing/compressing and getting it to the YAPC TVers
then that'd be excellent. Again email me at the above address and I will
attempt to sort out what levels of equipment we have and division the
labour amongst the many, many of you who will volunteer.

Regards

Mark

Ye Olde Perl[e] Mo[u]ngeurs Of Londinium Worshoppe Schedule of Events

2008-11-04 Thread Mark Keating

Hear ye. Hear ye.

To all Mo[u]guers Perl[e], to my Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen, to all
denziens throughout the lands of faire Albion, upon whose shores waves
of grace are blessed, I give thee pause to taketh note. At this
location, upon this time, and at a place well suited to thee for
communication oft, and with, internets blessed, thou canst find the
[proposed] Schedule of Events, for the Workshoppe of Londinium to be
held on Saturday, the twenty-ninth day of November in this year of our
Lord two thousand and eight.

Thy attention is turneth to:

http://www.markkeating.me.uk/lpw2008/Schedule.pdf

If thou wisheth to raise a concern then at thy pleasure, though perhaps
to some otherwise non dream't of consternation, address they words to
mdk(at)shadowcat.co.uk, where no doubt they shall be read upon,
remarketh upon and then shredded and fed to a cat.[1]

If thou seeketh to complain then simply follow these three steps:

First: writeth thy complaint on finest Egyptium Vellum using a quill
from the Scottish Sea eagle in thine own blood, affixing a seal made
from gristle of your own flesh.
Second: Assign one of thy lesser servants to tarry to Lord Gregory (head
of l.pm)[2] and seeketh from him the secret addresses wherein the dark
masters who control the secret writings of Perl[e] dwell.
Third: Stuff they complaint down the throat of a freshly slaughtered
goat and cast it upon the sacrificial pyre while recounting sixteen of
thy favourite memes backwards into a mirror.

Thy complaint shouldst then reach the correct Seraphim who shalt wing it
to its rightful home.

Thy thanks as always shower me with much greatness.

Mark

[1] I will of course read them and do all I can to aid, and/or assist
your query.
[2] Please don't really bother Greg, well not until the day of the
conference at least, and then only after he has quaffed at least five
fine ales.

[ANNOUNCE] LPW: Call for Papers

2008-10-10 Thread Mark Keating
So it is just before 16:00 on Friday 10th October and I should be
warning you all that you only have 8hrs remaining to put in your
submissions for papers...

But

In usual conference style (and in memory of all those fake curtain calls
so beloved by bands the world over), here is the fake encore.

You have until Midnight (GMT) on Monday 13th October to submit a
proposal. you guessed it might happen and it did, so go away, feel smug,
don't feel smug, as long as you come up with a proposal and submit it.

Lightning talks are especially welcome.

Kind regards

Mark

LPW 2008::Call for Sponsors

2008-09-20 Thread Mark Keating

To all the great and good in the land...

The 2008 London Perl Workshop, to be held on the 29th November at
Westminster University's New Cavendish Campus, is once more calling for
sponsors.

Why Sponsor?
The London Perl Workshop is a free event in which members of the Perl
community can come together and enjoy a great selection of talks, a
cacophony of advice from various luminaries and an atmosphere of
tranquility(1) for gentle, and often bearded, folk. This is your chance
to show yourselves to that captive audience(2), to embrace them(3), or
just to remind them that you continue in your support of this wide and
diverse community.

What can I sponsor?
What have you got?
Sponsorship of the LPW is a free choice. As is the manner of your
sponsorship. For more ideas please talk to Mark Keating, email to
m.keating(at)shadowcat.co.uk

What do we offer?
1. Text and link on the sponsors page (you to supply);
2. Thank-you in the closing address;
3. Ten minute slot to discuss yourselves if wanted (tbc);
4. Full page on the workshop wiki to fill with whatever you like :) ;
5. The chance to promote yourselves as connected to the London (and
wider) Perl community;

6. A lot of love and respect from the organisers and attendees.

Thanks for reading.

Mark Keating
(Workshop Organiser)

(1) Okay maybe not tranquility, in fact definitely not tranquility as
there are too many Daves per square mile for that.

(2) Cages can be supplied.
(3) No physical contact required, though this can be arranged if
requested with a suitably lubricated Greg.

LPW::Call for Proposals

2008-09-20 Thread Mark Keating

Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye,

My Lords, Ladies, Gentlemen, and Daves of Olde Londinium Towne.

Once more it is my pleasure, nay even my delight, to call to ye for
lectures, presentations, discussions or even trivia and hyperbole upon
the language known to thee as Perl[e] and the subject of Perl[e] 10 (ten
or tenth, thine owne choice).

So, good people, attend thineself with hasteless persipacity to the
matter of submissions of proposals, good and proper, being of length
already described.

The closing date of the tenth day of October in the year of our Lord two
thousand and eight, looms forever closer, and the black waters of
despair to late entrants denied draws richer.

I thank ye for thy attentive soul.

Mark
