Also, pick a route that doesn't involve going round the M25 from the M3 to
the M4. If you play with the "typical traffic" on Google maps, you can see
that that stretch is a very unhappy red (in both directions) after about 4pm

That's probably not the only hot spot to avoid - the M4 from Slough to the
M25 doesn't look very happy, and some of the A roads are marked orange.

IIRC the average speed of traffic in central London remains stubbornly
around 11mph, pretty much unchanged for over 100 years.

I think that you will be lucky to get from the M25 to the venue in less than
75 minutes, and if you actually want to be sure to make it for the start,
you'll need to allow quite a bit more for that stretch.

Finding somewhere a bit further out to park and making the final part of
the journey by train or tube will massively increase your journey time
reliability.

In my experience you can't put the traffic and parking aside, because it's
pretty difficult to drive in central London. Be sure to pay the congestion
charge if you manage to get near the venue before 6pm!

I would really consider driving to “much closer” and finishing the journey off
with public transport. It will save congestion charge and dependent on where,
probably parking as well.

July Tech Meet Update

2014-07-03 Thread Sue Spence
Hi all,

I have 4 talk proposals now, thank you to everyone who has kindly agreed to
give us a presentation. Here is the list we have so far:

- Thomas Klausner (domm) from Vienna.pm is going to talk about OX &
AngularJS
- Alex Balhatchet is going to talk about his rewrite of Ovid's Test::Kit
module
- Mike Francis will tell us about creating a RESTful database frontend with
Web::Simple & Web::Machine and how annoying that was
- Dave Cross will natter about Github, Travis-CI and Perl

I would like to encourage everyone else to think about giving a short talk.
It would be nice to have a few 'lightning talk' style interludes in the
programme so we can give our branes a rest in between the longer talks.
These definitely don't need slides, just feel free to regale us with a tiny
tale of your Perl derring-do.

I'd also like to have a few backup talks just in case one of the other
speakers can't make it.

Thanks,
-sue

And, considering how public this meeting has become, neither cabal nor

CORRECTION:

I am officially a moron, and can't use copy and paste to save my life.
The details of tonight's tech meet can actually be found here.

  http://london.pm.org/lpma/2003-September/70.html

Sorry about the confusion. To make this post worthwhile, here's a list of
people who are talking and what on:

Dave Cross will be giving a twenty minute talk on Writing a Book Using The
Template Toolkit, where he talks about writing the upcoming "Perl Template
Toolkit" book that he co-authored.

Martin Ling was kind enough to provide a quick summary of his 20min talk:

Alzabo (http://www.alzabo.org) is a Perl data modelling tool that groks
relational database systems. You can use it to manipulate database
schemas in the abstract, reverse engineer them from existing DBs, and
generate SQL diffs to a live database to rearrange its structure. It
also provides an object-oriented runtime API which provides similar
features to Class::DBI and other modules. Martin Ling will give an
overview of its capabilities, compare it to other related modules and
preview some new features in development.

Nicholas Clark will be giving a lightning talk on the upcoming release of
Perl 5.8.1 and what's changed in the new shiny shiny version of Perl.

I'll be waffling about my new Attempt module that I will release to CPAN
just as soon as I complete this email, honest guv.

Leon Brocard will be talking about the plans for the CPAN cabal meeting in
a couple of weeks entitled "How can we make CPAN even better?"

Tom Huskins will presenting a lighting talk about his experiences of
teaching Perl to absolute beginners.

James Duncan will be explaining to us why he's never ever going to write
another container class again.

Finally Earle Martin will be detailing Stupid RSS Tricks On IRC.

So you can see, it's going to be a lot of fun, with a wide range of
topics.

Hope to see you there.

[ANNOUNCE] Social Meet 2nd Oct @ The Star + Tonight Tech Meet

2003-09-18 Thread Mark Fowler
[ First up, remember there's a tech meet tonight at "The Angel" at Old
Street. See http://london.pm.org/lpma/2003-May/55.html for info ]

Announcing the October social meeting of the London Perl Mongers, which
will be held after seven on Thursday the 2nd of October in the upstairs
room of the Star Tavern in Belgravia (That's two weeks today if you're
reading this on the day I sent it.) It's the pub we had our July Social
Meeting in, and quite a few people expressed an urge to go back. The Star
is in walking distance of Victoria, Sloane Square, Hyde Park Corner and
Knightsbridge. Full directions to the pub are included in this email
below.

  http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=528107&Y=179347&A=Y&Z=1
  http://openguides.org/london/index.cgi?Star_Tavern,_SW1X_8HT

Social meetings are a chance to meet up for a quiet drink. They allow
members of the group to chat about Perl and other issues over a pint, and
put names (or nicks) to faces and they present an informal way for people
to pass on or acquire Perl knowledge. Non-Perl programmers any way
affiliated with London.pm or it's members are always made welcome, and
they'll be plenty of non-Perl talk that they shouldn't feel excluded.

The meetings start at approximately 7pm, though people often arrive
earlier than this as they come directly from work. Quite a few people
will opt to eat in the pub rather than eating beforehand; This month's
venue The Star is fabled for it's excellent steaks. There's no formal
plan for the evening (apart from drinking and chatting) and people should
feel to turn up and leave when they want, though the majority of people
will remain in the pub till closing time so late-comers shouldn't be
worried about us leaving before they get there.

Directions:

The Star Tavern is located in a little cobbled street behind the German
Embassy. Below are directions to get there from various places.

 -- From Sloane Square --

Essentially you want to take the north exit off the square and head up
Sloane Street and then take a right down Pont street till you get to the
embassy, and then down the cobbled mews till you find the pub.

So, in detail: Come out of the station. Standing as you are with your
back to the station you want to go up the road diagonally opposite on
the right (so turn right, cross the crossing, and on the other side turn
left and walk for a bit till you come to Sloane Street - a big wide
street - on your right.) You want to keep going up Sloane street till
you come to Pont Street, the junction of which has traffic lights on it.
Turn right (east) down this street and keep going. The road will start to
veer off to the left, and at this point you should see a large white
building with black windows that is the German embassy on the left hand
side (north) side of the road. In a big, tall, archway under the
embassy there should be a cobbled street. Head up this street and The
Star is on the end on the left.

 -- From Victoria --

Essentially you want to cross the road out of the station and then head
up Lower then Upper Belgrave Street so you get to Belgrave Square. From
here you want to take the second left exit to Pont Steet and turn
right though the German embassy up the cobbled mews to the pub.

In detail: From the tube lines, follow signs for main station and get to
the surface. Turn left and walk past starbucks and pret a manger - you
want to get to Buckingham Palace Road which is the road the busses enter
the bus station off of. Cross the road at the traffic lights and use the
other set of traffic lights to the left to get off the mini-island you're
on. You should now be in front of the deserted Usit campus office. go
left (west) along Buckingham Palace Road then take the first right
(north) up into Lower Belgrave Street. Continue up this street, passing
drinking establishments such as "The Victoria" on your left, and the "The
Plumber Arms". This road turns into "Upper Belgrave Street" - just keep
on going until you come to Belgrave square. Here, turn left and take the
second exit off the square (the one that goes directly west) down Pont
Street. Almost immediately on your right you should see the German
embassy (a big white building with black windows) and a large phallic
like statue. There should be an archway here under the embassy leading up
a cobbled street. Go up this street and The Star will be on the end on
 the left.

 -- From Knightsbridge --

Essentially you want to get out of the tube and then head south down
Sloane Street until you come to Cadeogan Place. Turning down here
you simply want to walk east for a short while until you come to the
north end of a cobbled mews that the pub is located on.

In detail: To get out of the tube, take the exit signposted for Harvey
Nichols / Knightsbridge (south side) / Sloane Street

Hello.

I plan to announce the tech meet that's happening a week on Thursday (so,

speakers.

Could people interested in speaking email me please? Even those that I
spoke to in the pub and said they could speak, or those that emailed me

you're still up for it, and we won't have problems.

I'd quite like a few more lightning talks. Lighting talks are easy, and
quick, and you can speak on anything you want (a three minute guide to
someone else's module is considered excellent, as is 'this is a silly
script I wrote, look I can now do this'.)

Hoping to hear from you.

Tech Meet Tonight (7pm, upstairs at The Angel pub in Oldstreet)

2003-07-17 Thread Mark Fowler
This is a reminder about the tech meet tonight. 7pm for a 7.15pm
sharp start in the upstairs room of The Angel Pub in Oldstreet. Full
details of where it is and how to get there are in this mail:

   http://london.pm.org/lpma/2003-July/62.html

Since this would otherwise be a content free email, here's a list of the
talks we're going to have tonight, which got finalised a good thirty
seconds ago:

Steve Purkis will be talking about 'Pangloss', a multilingual
terminology management system built on OpenFrame/Pixie.

Paul Mison will be presenting on Managing Digital Music Metadata
  with Perl.

Arthur Bergman, James Duncan and Leon Brocard will be discussing the
infamous Ponie project that all the cool kids are abuzz about these
  days, and fielding questions.

Richard Clamp will be talking about his funky Bluetooth remote control
for his computer he made out of his mobile phone and some Perl code.

Tim Sweetman will be giving a lightning talk on some new concepts he's
  proposing for improving Wikis.

Dominic Mitchell will be giving a lightning talk on general usage of
namespaces in XML, and surprises therein

Finally, Nigel Hamilton will be presenting the second part of his series
of jovial looks at IP law from a programmer's point of view.

I'm looking forward to every one of these talks, and with such a broad
range of topics, I suspect that they'll be something for everyone at this
meeting.

I hope to see you there.

and perl 6, sounds terribly interesting and you can find out more
   about it at http://opensource.fotango.com/ponie/

 * Various people are giving practice versions of their talks they'll
be giving the week after at YAPC::Europe, so if you're not going
then you can still manage to see a few, and if you are going then
you can see a couple here and free yourself up to see other tracks
   at the conference.

So it's all very promising, and I'm only sorry I've not been able to
announce it more formally up until this point.

Details:

Fotango, bless their event sponsoring souls, have hired the upstairs
room at The Angel pub near _Old_ _Street_ (no, this isn't very near at
all to Angel station, or even in Islington so don't go there by
mistake) This is the same pub that they hired out for a previous tech
meet last summer.

  http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=532783&Y=182390&Z=1
  http://london.pm.org/meetings/locations/angel_pub.html

The directions are straight forward as finding the place is simplicity
itself: Get to Old Street roundabout either by taking the tube or
train to Old Street station (you'll surface on the roundabout) or via
any number of the busses. The south exit off of this roundabout is
City Road. Walk down the left hand side of the road towards the
centre of London. The very first road on your left is Leonard Street,
and the pub is on the corner.

The meeting as always will start at 7pm, for a 7.15pm sharp start. We
should be done talking by nine thirty. Normally after the meeting we
retire to a local pub to discuss the talks; This meeting we shall
probably stay in the pub we're already in.

I hope to see you all there. Until then.

Mark.

Social Meeting Tonight + Help Required with Tech Meet

2003-07-03 Thread Mark Fowler
Hello.

There's a social meeting tonight, and I thought I'd better drop an email
to the list so that people are reminded. Calthorpe Arms, 7pm. All the
details are in the announce post from a week and a bit ago:

http://london.pm.org/lpma/20030623/019722.html

Right, onto the tech meet. There's a tech meeting schedule for Thurs 17th
July (that's the week before YAPC::Europe, the week after TPC/OSCON, two
weeks today if you're reading this on the day I sent it.) However, since
I've been away for a bit, and my email has totally stopped working, I've
not be able to organise a few details yet...

Firstly, we still need a venue. I'm sure that one of the usual suspects
will be more than happy to offer, but rather emailing everyone I can think
of, I thought I'd ask everyone...hey, you never know, a new venue would be
nice.

Secondly, it's been six weeks since the last technical meeting and in that
time things have got really confusing. I've agreed to many people that
they can do a tech talk, but since I'm useless I'm not sure if I've got
all the details or not. In short, it's been so long since I agreed for
many people (in some cases many months,) so would you all please confirm
that you'll are still up for talking: Please would everyone who's giving
a tech talk email me at - this is important - [EMAIL PROTECTED] (not
twoshortplanks.com, for reasons that are way too complicated to go into
and would involving being annoyed with people I'd rather not be annoyed
with.)

Right, see you all tonight.

Mark.

Okay. I just tend to sign up for things in advance if that's a requirement.
I guess it depends on when the deadline for signing up is.

Just incase I haven't said it on list yet, next month (on the 22nd May,
accorind to iCal) we'll be going to State51 for a tech meet. This
decision was taken sometime last month and was based on the same reason we
move around from pub to pub - inevitably someone will not be able to
attend particular venues and it sucks to keep excluding them by repeatedly
using the same venue.

at conferences and meetings. It's a barrier to entry. I didn't go to a
BSD meet a while ago because I hadn't signed up to it and it was too

You're not stating the important point.
We previously had a box to enter our name. It was the sign in sheet on
the security guard's desk at the Yahoo! building. You didn't have to do
it in advance, which means that anyone who decided to come to the tech
meeting on spec could do so.

Now we have to be organised. Fortunately not very organised - lunchtime
same day is no hardship. But it does require some organisational discipline.

However, I think it's worthwhile considering that Yahoo! is an excellent
venue. (And even gave us beer).

I always find this sort of thing rather amusing ...

I've worked at more than one place that has had similar policies ... none of
them are worth the electrons they are written with.

1) someone signs up ... as A. N. Other .. there's no way of knowing if they
really are A. N. Other or not. Even if they are who they say they are,
there's no way of knowing if they are going to steal all the underpants.

2) Assuming you tighten it further to checking with whoever is organising it
that they recognise the names on the list, that fails still because for a
meeting like this, its quite possible a newcomers name would not be
recognised, and would be let in anyway.

3) even if you do recognise the name, how do you know its not someone with a
longstanding grudge whose signed up just to get into the building and steal
your underpants?

all it saves you from is random people walking in off the street, and there
are simpler ways to do that ... still, the places I;ve seen it done before,
it kept the office manager busy filling out little badges, and while they
where doing that, they weren't fiddling with somehting else, so I guess some
good came out of it.

Perhaps someone should register as A. Pants-Stealer and see if a badge is
made up for them ;) (and no, I won't )

Still, good of Yahoo! to provide the facility, don't look a gift horse in the
mouth I say.

I don't think the above concern is likely to be valid, and fwiw, I don't
think this is too much of a pain, given that they've been extremely good
to us, even if the security guards last time didn't know. It's also a venue

It's in everyones interest to make sure that we continue to enjoy the
hospitality of Yahoo! as it's by far the most hospitable venue we have
ever been lucky enough to be offered.

Two weeks notice is plenty of time to sign up and since you can sign up
until lunchtime on the day I don't see this really being a restriction.

Mad rampage, unlikely. Overloaded with work and an opportunity to remove a
part of it because these people seem ungrateful, possibly.

It's not a meeting place, it's their office. They're perfectly entitled to

As you mention, the venue is excellent and I would encourage everyone to

The policy change from Yahoo only came at very short notice (like,
yesterday). Faced with trying to organise a new venue in a short time or
doing this, this seemed like the best idea. But no, I agree, it does
make things awkward for future tech meets.

you might at some point in the next few days think you might attend please
sign up for the meeting by visiting the following url (all we need is your
name):

  http://london.pm.org/cgi-bin/record/index.cgi

So, back to the question of the panel, or more accurately the question of
what questions we should ask them. The questions can be on the philosophy
of the templating and content management systems, the technical aspects of
such systems, or merely for advice on big perl projects, or anything else
you might think is appropriate. Questions should be sent to:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'll select and group the questions, and then get people who asked
them to ask them on the night.

Full details on the venue were contained in the previous email to

[ANNOUNCE] London.pm Mentoring Program + Tech Meet Tonight!

2003-03-13 Thread Mark Fowler
[ First up, don't forget, there's a Technical Meeting tonight at Yahoo!
For full details see: http://london.pm.org/lpm/20030303/017342.html ]

London.pm's mentoring program is a new scheme launched by London.pm as way
to allow people wanting to learn more about Perl to directly benefit from
the more experienced members of the group. The scheme tries to pair
together students with mentors; This directly flexible one-on-one
training relationship allows mentoring by mixture of email, irc/instant
messaging or real life face to face meetings (whatever works best for the
mentor and student)

The training scheme is aimed at training all levels of Perl programmers,
from someone who has never programmed before, up to someone who's been
programming Perl for a while who might need some extra help with something
like OO programming, learning about database access, or better CGI
discipline.

At this stage the scheme is seeking out potential students who believe
that they could benefit from the scheme. A short mail sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] including details such as level of experience and
approximate details of where you live/work should enable us to find a
mentor that is best suited in terms of training disciplines and ability to
meet face to face with you.

Hoping to hear from you soon (and possibly see you at the meet tonight)

In addition to the aforementioned speakers, I've also agreed to let
Michael Schwern speak (him of Perl-QA and not looking like a farmer fame,
http://magnonel.guild.net/~schwern/) Michael's not often in town so I
thought we all wouldn't mind squeezing his talks in.

In order to try and get us all down the pub in a reasonable time (i.e. so
we have time to discuss matters covered) and those people who have to
travel a long way home can get away at a reasonable time I'm going to have
to try and push the meeting on quickly; I'd appreciate all your
extra help this meeting letting the speakers switch quickly and from one
talk to the next.

More Tech Meet Details.

2003-03-07 Thread Mark Fowler
People were asking me for more details on the Tech Meet last night, so now
I have them I'll let you know:

Celia Romaniuk will be speaking about FOAF, a standard for describing
relationships between people. She's been working at the BBC to use this
to map the interactions between the characters in everyone's favourite
grimey London soap, Eastenders, and hopefully she'll tell us all about it.

Jo Walsh and Matt B will be doing a "tag team talk" on RDF, irc bots, and
things of that ilk.

Bill Hailis from Yahoo! will be giving a high-level talk on "Notifier",
the network-transparent, message-passing system based on a
publish/subscribe model which they use to synchronise their network
architecture. Written in Perl, naturally.

Nigel Hamilton will be presenting the first of two talks he's agreed to
give informing us of the current state of affairs of the laws regarding
Intellectual Property (without actually touching on the politics of the
matter.) This month he'll be covering Trademarks and Domains; Next
month: Copyright.

Nik Clayton will be talking on his personal experiences in redeveloping the
wheel when it comes to online photo applications, and how he's managed to
produce what he thinks is a rounder wheel than any of the other
implementations.

Finally, Ivor Williams will be giving a lightning talk on the VCS::Lite
module that he's developed.

As I said previously I'm really looking forward to this tech meeting.
The topics are broad, and there's defiantly as much in the talks for the
advanced Perl programmer as there is for the complete novice.

There's a couple of speakers that offered talks that I haven't got back
to, which I feel terrible about; The truth be told, I'm having a very
disorganised week. Could the speakers please email me and tell me if
they'd be willing to do the talks at a later date?

Thanks.

[ANNOUNCE] London.pm Tech Meet Thurs March 13th + Social Tonight

2003-03-06 Thread Mark Fowler
[ First up, there's a social meeting tonight at the Star Tavern in
Belgravia. Full details were posted to this list already at
  http://london.pm.org/lpma/2003-February/45.html]

Announcing the March 2003 Technical Meeting. This meeting is happening at
7pm on the 13th of March, which is a week today, and is probably a week
earlier than most people were expecting it. This, amongst other issues,
is necessary to give speakers a chance to practice their talks in advance
of conferences later this month. Apologies to anyone who was depending on
a later date.

The meeting will again be held at Yahoo!'s UK offices located near
Victoria. This is the same venue as the previous meeting in January, full
directions are below. As before you should aim to get to Yahoo! for 7pm,
for a 7.15pm sharp start. The meeting should last just over a couple of
hours, and we will be retiring to a nearby drinking establishment
afterwards for discussion of talks.

It's looking like an interesting meeting for all involved. I got more
proposals than I could schedule, so I'm hoping that all the speakers that
I haven't had time to schedule will be able to talk at the next meeting.

We're having a XML slant to the meeting. We'll be discussing interesting
applications developed (so it should be interesting for XML novices and
experienced users alike) In addition to these we've got a non-perl talk
on IP by an intellectual property lawyer (sure to be a hot topic,)
discussion of a Perl online photo application, and a talk by a Yahoo!
employee on some of the cool things he's been up to. Plus more, if we
have time...

Thanks to all involved in advance, especially to Yahoo! for once again
providing a venue.

Directions to Yahoo!:

The nearest tube station to Yahoo is Victoria, and almost all busses run
to the station, though having said that it's within easy walking
distance of Sloane Square. Here's a couple of maps:

   http://makeashorterlink.com/?E50A22503
   http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=528517&Y=178491&A=Y&Z=1

 Directions from Victoria:

Come out of Victoria Station onto Buckingham Palace Road (This is the
road that busses enter the bus station from - you can follow the signs
to "Victoria Coach Station" if you want) You simply have to follow the
road south/west (left) for five minutes you get to Yahoo!. Keep walking
along the road, past the shopping centre on your left, past the coach
station on your right, until you get to a cross roads (where Ebury Bride
road branches left and Pimlico Rd branched right, just past the police
station on your right.) The first building on the right hand side of
Buckingham Palace Road after the crossroads is Yahoo! - identifiable as
all the furniture inside is the corporate Yahoo! yellow and purple.

You will probably have to identify yourself with Security when you get
to the office, who will send you downstairs to the canteen where the
meeting is being held. All this info is on the website:

  http://london.pm.org/meetings/locations/yahoo.html

Hope to see you there (and tonight too)

Doors 6.45pm, 7.15pm sharp start. Full details are here:

Announcing the February 2003 London Perl Mongers Social Meeting on
Thursday 6th February. If you're reading this email on the day it was
sent out, then it's two weeks today (i.e. not next Thursday, but the
one after.)

This will be held in the upstairs function room at the Knights
Templar on the west side of Chancery Lane.

  http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=531137&Y=181222&A=Y&Z=1

This is reachable with a short stroll from numerous tube stations:
Holborn (Piccadilly and Central lines), Chancery Lane (Central line),
Temple (District and Circle lines) and Blackfriars (District and
Circle lines, National Rail.)

As normal, most people will be arriving sometime around 7pm, but a
significant number of people will be there much earlier coming
straight from work. I should note that the pub does food, so should
you want to eat there you can.

Well, I look forward to seeing you all on the 6th, and for those of
you that can make it tonight at Yahoo!.

[ANNOUNCE] Tech Meet Thurs 23rd Jan @ Yahoo! (+ tonight, social meeting)

2003-01-09 Thread Mark Fowler
[ Before I go any further, don't forget the social meeting tonight
in the Penderel's Oak on High Holborn, see you there
  http://london.pm.org/pipermail/london.pm-announce/2003-January/36.html]

With great pleasure I announce the Jan 2002 London.pm Technical Meeting on
Thursday 23rd of January (that's two weeks today.) This is happening at
Yahoo! in Victoria, directions below.

This month we're looking forward to an interesting set of talks about a
variety of topics. Dave will be giving a thirty minute talk about
overloading in Perl. Leon and I will be hoping to expand you knowledge of
various modules, where he'll be doing a ten minute talk about "Core
Modules You Might Not Know About" and I'll be attempting to do "The
Complete 2002 Perl Advent Calendar (Abridged)" in 25 minutes flat.

To go with these we'll have a smattering of lightening talks[1]. Simon
will be talking about Template::Plugin::XML::LibXML, Paul will be talking
about user interfaces and web site design, and Piers will no doubt be his
usual entertaining self talking[2] about Coding Standards.

Hopefully there should be something for everyone in each of these talks no
matter little or much experience you've had with Perl.

Right, directions to Yahoo!

The nearest tube station to Yahoo is Victoria, and almost all busses run
to the station, though having said that it's within easy walking
distance of Sloane Square. Here's a couple of maps:

   http://makeashorterlink.com/?E50A22503
   http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=528517&Y=178491&A=Y&Z=1

 Directions from Victoria:

"Come out of Victoria Station onto Buckingham Palace Road (there are
multiple ways out of the station so I won't try and list every single
one) by following the signs to Victoria Coach station. Walk past the
shopping centre on the left hand side of the road and Victoria Coach
Station on the right hand side of the road until you get to a cross
  roads (approx 5 minutes walk)."

"As you stand Ebury Bridge Road will be to your left and there will be a
Police Station in the bottom right hand corner. In the top right hand
corner will be Yahoo! complete with prominent logo."

You will probably have to sign in with Security when you get to the
 office.

All this info is on the website:
  http://london.pm.org/meetings/locations/yahoo.html

Hope to see you there.

While I'm announcing things, I might as well post links to other things
happening in London this month:

FreeBSD UK Use Group meeting (Thurs 16th Jan, 7pm onwards)
   http://makeashorterlink.com/?K4A934503

Greater London Linux User Group meeting (Sat 18th Jan, 12pm onwards)
   http://gllug.linux.co.uk/meeting-20030118.html

Mark.

[1] There's probably time for a few more lightening talks if anyone can
be convinced to give them.

[2] Actually he told me he'd be ranting about them.

Having talked to Mark I've now booked Yahoo! Europe's (located next to
Victoria Coach Station) board room which comes with a overhead
projector. I can provide Mac and Windows machines pre connected if
necessary.

The board room has a very funky glass wall that turns opaque at the
touch of a button for that geek attraction factor.

I may also be able to persuade somebody here to talk about how Perl is
used at Yahoo! (a lot ... > 3 million lines not including the little
scripts everybody has lying around)

[ANNOUNCE] Lightening Talk Tech Meet, Thursday 21st November

2002-11-06 Thread Mark Fowler
With pleasure London.pm announces:

ALL LIGHTENING TALKS ALL THE TIME

This is the official announcement of the long awaited November Tech Meet,
taking place at 7pm on Thursday, 21st Novemeber 2002, being held at
Profero's UK offices.

Q: Er, when?

A: You lot don't half get confused about dates do you? That's not
tomorrow (that's the 7th, when the social is,) nor the next Thursday after
that (that's the 14th) but the Thursday after that (the 21st.)

Q: You mean it's going to be *all* lightening talks?

A: Yes! This month, rather than doing long twenty minute talks we're going
to bow to the MTV generation and have just lightening talks. As you know,
a lightening talk is a quick talk that only lasts five or so minutes, so
we can fit a lot of them in.

Q: What's the point in that?

A: As an attendee this has several advantages:

 1) If you find the subject matter boring, or too technical, or not
technical enough, you don't have to listen for too long till the next
subject comes along.

 2) You get a wide varied range of subjects discussed, so you get to learn
a little bit about a lot of things.

I've been saying this all along, but if you've never been to a tech meet
before, this would be an ideal introduction as you get to see a lot of
interesting stuff without having to think too hard ;-).

Q: Okay, but what will the talks actually be on?

A: We've got a range of subjects covered, from day to day operational
stuff (for example how to set up and install mod_perl on FreeBSD,)
though discussions of interesting and exciting modules (like Simon's talk
on his dynamic website) up to quick primers on hot subjects related to
Perl (for example, Information Architecture and Bioinformatics.) Oh, and
a lot moreAt last count we had 14 people due to give talks.

Q: Crikey, won't that take a long time?

No, not really, well, about two hours (estimating it taking about ten
minutes to present each five minute talk.) Which means we should be in
the pub by half nine ;-), giving us plenty of time for casual questions
to be put to the speakers.

Q: Okay, I'm coming already. Where's the venue?

A: The meeting will be held at the UK offices of Profero
(http://www.profero.com) located half way between Angel and Highbury and
Islington tube stations. An address and streetmap URL:

 Ground Floor,
 134 Liverpool Road
 London
 N1 1LA

 http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=531422&Y=183954&A=Y&Z=1

The entrance to the office is set back off the east side Liverpool road,
and to get to it you need to go down a passageway between a corner shop
and a laundrette, roughly opposite the bar "Stone", which can be easily
spotted due to the large lizard climbing up the corner of the building.

There should be someone at the door to meet you. If there isn't, hit the
buzzer marked "Profero" and ask for me. We're on the ground floor, so we
shouldn't be hard to find. For security reasons we'll be getting people
to sign in, but you'll find it's generally quite a relaxed place.

Q: And what time should I show up again?

A: Talks will start at 7pm, and so we don't annoy the Profero staff
members you should show up no earlier than 6.30pm. Did I mention that
there's a bar called "Stone" opposite? There's also a proper pub called
"Houricans" next to that that serves drinks other than Stella and
Hoegaarden.

Q: Anything else I need to know?

A: Not really, I guess I should reiterate this meeting's zero heckling
policy that I promised the speakers though. The talks should only take
five minutes, so you can ask questions at the end, and if there's not time
for that then I'm scheduling a lot of time for talking in the pub
afterwards.

Hope to see you there, if not at the social meet before.

Mark.

Call For Participation: Nov Tech meet.

2002-10-09 Thread Mark Fowler

Hello,

This is a call for participation for the November tech meet on Thursday
November the 21st.

Lightening talks are easy to give...you're only on stage for five to seven
minutes, and they're over almost as soon as they've started. This is a
great chance for people (especially people who've never given a talk
before) to talk about any old thing that they've been doing with Perl
without needing to get too indepth.

In case you're sitting there thinking "I'd be great at giving a talk, but
I've got nothing to talk about" then I've got a list of technical topics
that you can pick from (though it'd probably be easier for you to do a
case study from your work)...for example "The difference between my,
local, and our", "The core file modules", "die, eval, and exception
handling", "the pack operator", etc, etc. Or just pick any random module
off of CPAN and give a five minute introduction to it.

And you've got a lot of time to prepare these talks. Mark's handy
date-chart-o-matic gives:

  October November
Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa
  1 2
you are here -->  9 10 11 12   3  4  5  6  7  8  9
13 14 15 16 17 18 19 10 11 12 13 14 15 16
20 21 22 23 24 25 26 17 18 19 20 21 <-- tech meet here

So far I've got nine volunteers[1]. I'm looking for about fifteen
presentations (giving us time for about two hours of talks, including
faffage.)

Drop me a line if you're considering giving a talk and I'll let you know
more details.

Mark.

[1] Though I do remember someone else volunteering to talk about something
else at the social meet, though I didn't write it down. If you
volunteered to talk and I haven't sent you a personal mail about it,
please mail me.

Tech meet, still on, still tonight

2002-07-18 Thread Paul Mison

Despite the privations of the tube strike, the technical meeting at the
Angel pub, City Road, just south of Old Street roundabout, is still on
(all the speakers, and Jon Mckoewn, the Man with the Projector, are all
able to attend), with us gathering at 6.30 for a 7pm start (although of
course we'll do the most interesting talks last, and we'll be expecting
that people may be a bit late).

Just as a note I'd forgotten to mention before, the meeting is upstairs.

Tech Meet, Thursday 18th July.

2002-07-10 Thread Chris Ball

Hi, all.

So, this is your just-over-a-week warning. Please make an entry in your
PDA/calendar groupware/phone/diary/all of the above; we'll be at Fotango
(32-37 Cowper Street, EC2A 4AW) on the 18th July from about 6:30pm
(first talk at 7pm). There'll be a projector, I'm told, graciously
provided by Jonathan McKeown, but no net access - if you're giving a
talk, you should be working on your slides and should get them to Leon
Brocard beforehand or bring them on a floppy on the night.

The current line-up is:

o Leon Brocard:
"CPAN Modules I Hate and CPAN Modules I Like"

o Paul Mison:
"The one where I went to YAPC::NA and wittered about it"

o Chris Ball:
  "Magicpoint: A meta-presentation"

o Dave Cross:
  "Idiomatic Perl"

o Jo Walsh:
"Why bots and the semantic web will change the world."

o Paul Mison:
"The one where I bore you to death about Scribot"

o Pierre Denis:
  "A Talk About Vx"

It's a huge number of talks for one night - there's about two hours of
straight talking with no breaks there. I'm guessing that there'll be a
couple of changes as a result:

Firstly, we're going to be _really_ strict about enforcing arbitrary and
subject-to-change time limits. I'll.. get someone less shy than myself
to shout at you until you stop talking, so be warned and please don't be
offended if we cut short a good Q&A; try and remember what was being
talked about for the pub later on.

Secondly, I doubt anyone's going to have the concentration to attend all
of the talks. Feel free to pick the ones you think you're going to
enjoy and disappear off to the pub for the others. We won't mind.

I talked with Leon about the possibility of splitting some of the
lightning talks into two streams, but we only have one room available.
If anyone thinks something should be done to reduce the time taken up by
the talks, let us know.

Hope to see you there,

- Chris.

However, that only works if the person has been nice enough to include

ObPerl:
Use 'perldoc -l' to tell you the location of a module on your system.
'perldoc -i' gives you case insensitivity which is also often useful.

I'm glat we can host the tech meeting in our offices. The nice thing is I
won't get lost in London to find the meeting.
We may have some network connections, not sure yet, sys admins are looking
at it.

I will only ask, please, not to bring the camel with you - the cleaner will
not appreciate it. Otherwise: everybody else is welcome :-)

Tech meet, finalised.

2002-06-27 Thread Chris Ball

Hi, all.

We appear to have a tech meet on our hands. The good people at Fotango
have offered to play host for us on Thursday 18th July; we still need a
projector, but I have a lead on that and I'm not begging shamelessly
just yet. :-)

Line-up so far:

Leon Brocard: "CPAN Modules I Hate and CPAN Modules I Like"
  = 20 mins.

Paul Mison: "The One Where I Went To YAPC::NA And Wittered About It"
  = 10 mins.

Chris Ball: "Magicpoint: A meta-presentation"
  = 20 mins.

Dave Cross: "Idiomatic Perl" (another extract)
  = 30 mins.

Paul Mison: "The One Where I Bore You To Death About Scribot"
  = 10 mins.

Pierre Denis: "A Talk About Vx"
  = 30 mins.

This adds up to two hours of fun-packed Perl goodness. If anyone has
any other talks to volunteer let me know, as I don't think we have
tremendous time limits. If I've judged the amount of time your talk
will last wrongly, let me know and I'll move things around.

Sound okay to everyone?

- Chris.
