I believe that refers to the rc.sysinit file that is in your ltsp tree

I am uncomfortable with that type of advice.

If you check the archives, I posted a bunch on the issue of
spanning-tree protocol and iMacs

It seems the Macintosh computers struggle with spanning-tree protocol
and by switching it off on the managed switches, all is fine. You might
want to try that.

OP also didn't say what the client was that you were connecting (though
I'm not sure that it matters).

Like most things Apple, my understanding is that they forked OpenLDAP at
2.1.x and mostly misses all of the improvements/enhancements made since
in favor of their own interface. It's probably fine for a small/medium
size network.

If the feature set of Open Directory appeals to you, then you probably
should check out Fedora Directory Server (free)...
http://directory.fedoraproject.org

these are impressive - even compared to Open Directory

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] How to disable/limit pixmap cache in X

You got to be kidding...

The web site spools the full large scale image for each image and it
takes forever to download each one.

You would die of old age before that page gets fully downloaded.

Perhaps it might be better to consider the problem is really poorly
designed web site.

- I had to set the PATH variable to include /usr/X11R6/bin
- I am still having an issue where SCREEN_01 = startx and SCREEN_01 =
rdesktop because it says 'Server is already active for display 0' (my
startx desktop) - Obviously I have to set this to use display 1 but that
is not within my skill set.
- If the screen on my Mac - rdesktop connection goes to screen
black...it won't wake up on keyboard or mouse events.
- Obviously need to change the hard coded stuff back to variables loaded
from lts.conf

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] ltsp 4.2 and rdesktop

2007-10-09 Thread Craig White
Oh, it tries to start xwindows...I think that is the point of the
setting. That of course is where it will fail.

Part of my problem is that these old iMacs are a bit skittish on
XF86Config-4 (they're still booting with 2.4 kernel).

a working XF86Config on a Macintosh but when I changed
SCREEN_01 = startx

SCREEN_01 = rdesktop

my XF86Config no longer works ;-( I feel your pain.

as was described to me and worked well, set them for shell, copy a
configuration to /tmp/XF86Config.1 (for screen_01) and /tmp/XF86Config.2
(for screen_02) to test the XF86Config-4 files out. From shell, type
'startx' . Once you have it working, the rest will follow.

either a user can login to the terminal or it can't - it has nothing to
do with ltsp.

if you get a root prompt on the ltsp server, what do you get from
'getent passwd' - do the ldap users show up? If not, run
system-config-authentication

[Ltsp-discuss] adding sound and other stuff

2007-09-20 Thread Craig White
OK - I have made tremendous progress thanks to this list

I solved my networking problem by getting into the Dell gigabit switches
and turning spanning-tree protocol off.

I've got a few macs going and thought that I would try to make sound
work and it looks good but I get an error when I log in saying
exactly...

Sound server informational message
Error while initializing sound driver:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Permission denied)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device

I've got set on my client (lts.conf)

# enable sound by default
SOUND   = Y
# choose either esd or nasd to be the default (esd only on
x86_64)
SOUND_DAEMON= esd
SMODULE_01  = dmasound_core
SMODULE_02  = snd-powermac
SMODULE_03  = dma_sndpmac

and it seems to be happy when booting up.

/dev/dsp is owned by root:root crw__

how do I set it up so that 'users' have privileges to use /dev/dsp?

OK - that was big...I get it

one more thing, I keep getting a blank hostname

my dhcpd.conf for this client is...

  host imac-linux-1 {
option vendor-class-identifier "AAPLBSDPC";
option vendor-encapsulated-options 01:01:02:08:04:01:00:00:01:82:
  05: # length
  69:6d:61:63:34; # hostname
  option option-128  e4:45:74:68:00:00;
  option option-129  "NIC=ne IO=0x300";
# option option-129  "NFSOPTS=nolock,ro,wsize=2048,rsize=2048";

  hardware ethernet 00:03:93:7f:5d:1a;
  fixed-address 192.168.3.47;
  option host-name "imac-linux-1.tobyhouse.com";
  }

which I would have expected it to get the hostname from option host-name
but it doesn't and though I can manually set it, that ain't the same. I
can see the code in rc.sysinit but I can't conceive of a method to alter
what is in rc.sysinit and it should pretty much work as is if I can set
the right option somewhere.

No - it wasn't a typo but rather an indication of my seeing your
previous instruction...

and recognizing that in ltsp-6 distribution, the ppc had
XF86Config-4.indigo
/opt/ltsp/ppc/etc/XF86Config-4.indigo
and not inside the X11 directory which is where I would have expected it
to be.

I'm taking the mac address from syslog on the DHCP server which always
notates the mac addresses of the DHCP client.

I've got some new things to try...will try in an hour or so when I get
to work

Thanks

[Ltsp-discuss] more ltsp-4.2 questions

2007-09-19 Thread Craig White
smaller, niggling details...

where does client get /etc/hosts from?

because it doesn't come from my ltsp:/tmp/hosts which has a pretty
thorough listing of my hosts and on the ltsp server
itself, /etc/hosts, /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/hosts and /opt/ltsp/ppc/etc/hosts
are all symbolic links to /tmp/hosts

instead, the client gets only the most simplified host file which lists
only 127.0.0.1 as localhost and 192.168.3.11 as server (which of course,
is the wrong name)

I can't see any options for this in lts.conf.readme either - where does
this come from?

I have a working xorg.conf on a 'snow iMac' from fc7
I am trying to use a different 'snow iMac' on ltsp.
So I gather I should cp my working_xorg.conf
to /opt/ltsp/ppc/etc/XF86Config-4.snow and simply set
[00:03:93:92:88:98]
 XSERVER= fbdev
 XF86CONFIG_FILE= XF86Config-4.snow

I will try that in the morning...that's what I interpret your suggestion
to be telling me.

yes, I am able to look at /tmp/XF86Config.1 but it always has (going
from memory now)...

Section "Device"
Driver  "192.168.3.11"

which ain't ever gonna work

Thanks

as far as I can tell, I have no choice as I have spent the entire day

thanks for hanging in there with me. Clearly the iMac as a tftp client
acts a little less predictably because when I copied the tftpboot
files/folders over to the same server as the dhcpd server, the yaboot
file is located and loaded. I am smack into the problem of 'NFS Server
not responding' at the point when it is trying to mount /opt/ltsp/ppc.
I am passing the same kernel boot params that worked for the i386
clients (but that was a 2.6 kernel) but that doesn't seem to matter
here.

I am downloading the CD's from k12ltsp to see what I can see but I
gathered that it was sort of turnkey setup so I can't just install it on
anything but a spare box somewhere.

Thanks

I'm confused as to why the reference to the k12ltsp stuff. I do have
ltsp 4.2 working with an intel based i386 client. I have similarly
configured a mac to pull down yaboot from my tftp server and I can't
tell whether the Mac client is pulling the file or not because tftp
doesn't seem to log anything, whether I change the startup arguments to
- -s /tftp in the xinetd daemon and also have shut off xinetd
completely and run tftp from the command line... '/usr/sbin/in.ftpd
- -s /tftp' and no activity is reported on screen whatsoever.

I have already set the mac to network boot and it's obvious that the
setting is good because the Mac shows the 'world' icon on screen.

I recognize that the ppc kernel stuff that I am using is old but it
still should boot. I have an iMac already loaded with Fedora 7 on the
hard drive and could copy over the entire tree if needed. I am sure that
I could solve the X issues because I've already worked them through with
this one iMac (though xorg.conf and not XFree86.conf)

My issue is more basic...trying to figure out:
- is iMac downoading bootloader code (yaboot)
- if so, is it downloading yaboot.conf and then the targeted kernel and
initrd

I will try to set the firmware as you suggest and see if that helps and
will also hook up the i386 system to see if tftp logs connections to
screen because I simply can't tell.

Do I set enet:192.168.3.7 because that is my tftp/server address or
do I set enet:192.168.3.5 because that is my dhcp server address?

I wasn't entirely certain that my take on the wiki page for dhcpd.conf
is correct (for Mac clients)

adding to global section of dhcpd.conf
option dhcp-parameter-request-list 1,3,6,1

[Ltsp-discuss] iMac client and tftp

2007-09-14 Thread Craig White
CentOS 5 and ltsp 4.2 - got an i386 client working - now I'm trying to
get an iMac (G3 384Mb RAM & 600MHz)

following instructions here...
http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/CpuArchitectures#LTSP_on_Latter_Day_Macintosh_G3

without special additions to dhcpd.conf per the above, the Mac client
simply waits on netboot (it does get ip address per logs)

adding to global section of dhcpd.conf
option dhcp-parameter-request-list 1,3,6,15,17,43,44,46,60;
and client section of dhcpd.conf is...
group mac-clients {
ddns-updates on;
next-server 192.168.3.7;
option root-path "192.168.3.7:/opt/ltsp/ppc";
filename "/lts/2.4.22-ltsp-1/yaboot";
# install client
host mac1 {
#   server-name "mac1";
option vendor-class-identifier "AAPLBSDPC";
option vendor-encapsulated-options \
01:01:02:08:04:01:00:00:01:82:
05: # length
69:6d:61:63:34; # hostname

hardware ethernet 00:03:93:92:88:98;
fixed-address 192.168.3.48;
option host-name "mac1";
}
}

client gets ip address and then quickly boots MacOS instead.

I changed tftpd from daemon mode to open mode by turning off xinetd and
starting tftpd like this...

# /usr/sbin/in.tftpd - -s /tftpboot

but it never shows anything on screen (or in logs when run as daemon)
and I can't tell if
/tftpboot/lts/2.4.22-ltsp-1/yaboot is ever loaded from the tftp server
at all

Any hints at troubleshooting?

ignoring of course device licenses, client access licenses, terminal
server licenses and other software licenses (office/backup/etc.) - just
the server itself is only one piece.

I can't see the reason to eat up bandwidth with sound but...

try (command line as root)
redhat-config-soundcard
be careful that mixers in KDE (if that is what you are using) will tend
to default to 0 volume

if that fails to locate card - let us know what lspci -vv finds -
perhaps you can modprobe it if you know what you are looking for.

www.ltsp.org
Search box (top left), searched for 'sound'
first in list from search

of course, you will need to get sound working on server first
