How to write degree symbol ° ?
I have big probems for entering a degree symbol as in 'cos 30°'. If entered as
such from the keyboard in TeX, it's not accepted. If entered in Lyx, it's
represented as '\lyxmathsym{\textdegree}', but when it comes to producing
output an error is the result.
The '\textdegree' alone seems not visible in the output. In some
places '\mbox{°}' is accepted, where the degree symbol is internally written
as \textdegree. It seems in fact that it is the 'lyxmathsym{}' which is not
understood in producing the output.

script) to produce float figures and inserted this code in the generated TeX
code. It is slightly changed by the TeX - Lyx converter and gives centered
Lyx views.

So how is this to be understood wrt. LyX?
Having graphics centered, is IMO a very common need, and most people
probably use the paragraph-centering because it is the only thing the
GUI offers.
LyX then creates a:

\begin{centering}
\includegraphics{asdf.pdf}
\par\end{centering}
\caption{asdf}
\end{figure}
Is this equivalent to what the texfaq-entry says one should do?

Yes. It is basically equivalent to \centering. The environment form is just
easier to create for LyX (otherwise, we'd need to end the switch, which is
rather complex).
Does the \par add additional (unwanted) whitespace?
It shouldn't. The whitespace in case of the center environment is caused by
centering being a so called trivlist.

Font and layout problem
Hi @, This is my first post here and I couldn't really spend many days sifting through archives to avoid repeating, so if the answer to this has been given before I apologize and would appreciate a quick pointer. I'm still in the getting-started phase. Attached is a screenshot showing two problems: 1. The letter ĵ, a special letter of the Esperanto language, is represented as a black box in pdf and dvi output. This happens with most available fonts save a very few (used here is Palatino). I'll have to do a row of experiments to find out exactly which ones. Strangely, all other 5 diacritical letters used in Esperanto work fine. They are part of the ISO 8859-3 charset, which I use for this document (utf-8 produces an error with latex upon exporting - I may post a separate message about this later if I don't find what's missing). If I produce the very same document in OpenOffice with the very same fonts, everything is fine. That is, I'm just guessing they are the same because they're the same names. Does Lyx use own font files or aren't they part of the system? 2. The line formatting isn't exactly as expected, some simply seem to escape justification. Is it because I don't have en Esperanto dictionary installed and it doesn't know how to properly hyphenate? This shouldn't actually affect line length. I am with Lyx 1.6.1 under Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) on a Thinkpad T61p. The document used for trying this out is an Esperanto translation of Ayn Rand's Anthem and uses the 'book' template. For my report i did this Go to Insert menu - special symbols - geometric shapes U can find a small circle looking similar to degree ...insert it and cut it Now after typing cos 30 ...paste it in the superscript..This looked well in output

I simply use a ^\circ in math mode. This works well.

insert delimiters dialog bug
Hi, I am using lyx 1.6.1 and whenever I use the insert delimiters dialog from the math panel with unmatched delimiters, it never lets me choose the second delimiter: upon choosing one bracket, either left or right, the dialog quits and lyx inserts whatever was selected for the second bracket. This makes sense when you want matching brackets, but not if you don't. Can anyone confirm this bug?

In the UserGuide you find in sec. 6.15.3 you find under From ISO8859--2 through 4: a j with a circumflex and can see that it appears correctly in the PDF output. (You must have the Latin Modern Fonts installed. They are provided as separate Debian/Ubuntu package and also as TeXLive package.) If I produce the very same document in OpenOffice with the very same fonts, everything is fine. That is, I'm just guessing they are the same because they're the same names. Does Lyx use own font files or aren't they part of the system? LyX doesn't have fonts. All fonts you can select in the document settings are the ones installed in your LaTeX system. Is it because I don't have en Esperanto dictionary installed and it doesn't know how to properly hyphenate? The dictionary is only needed to be able to spell-check your document. But there is an aspell Esperanto dictionary available: ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict/0index.html For hypehnation, you must install Esperanto hyphenation patterns. suggest there is soemthing seriously wrong. What's being cited are LaTeX
rubber lengths! I have no idea why this would happen, but either (a)
there's some serious problem in your BibTeX file or else (b) there's a
problem in the LyX file itself that's causing this error. I'm guessing
maybe it's an extra } or { somewhere? But it's hard to debug from here.

Well after exporting from lyx to plain tex and a LOT of trial and error in
Kile I came to the following simple workaround:
If I remove \usepackage{babel} it all works and my references show. If I
leave \usepackage{babel} I get the weird citation white space errors.
Beats me why this should be so. Im just happy it works now. Now I just need
to be able to tell lyx not to add the babel package. Any idea how I would do
that? Otherwise I will have to do pdf generation from Kile.

English appearing backwards
I have Lyx 1.6.1 installed on a Hebrew installation of Ubuntu 8.04. I can create Hebrew documents fine (from what I can tell). However, _English_ documents come out with their text going right to left, like this: sdrawkcab si sihT I have read the relevant pages on the wiki, but nowhere does it discuss this problem: http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/HebrewOnLinux http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/Hebrew I intend on creating documents with mixtures of English and Hebrew text. How can I configure Lyx to flow Hebrew RTL and English LTR? Cannot export to PDF
When I try to export to PDF, I get this error:

I wasn't able to read the size data for this font,
so I will ignore the font specification.
[Wizards can fix TFM files using TFtoPL/PLtoTF.]
You might try inserting a different font spec;
e.g., type `I\fontsame font id=substitute font name'.
This is pretty much a new install, I changed some things trying to get
better Hebrew support but nothing that seems relevant. Googling the
error message I see that this is not an uncommon occurrence, however,
I do not see a solution!

highlight spelling errors
hi there i am a newbie to lyx. i have previously used the winedt latex package for windows. i have installed lyx, cocoaspell and downloaded a PhD thesis template to start writing my thesis. i really like the look and feel of lyx and would prefer to use it BUT... i cannot see a way to automatically highlight spelling errors as i type them, or indeed highlight them WITHOUT running the spellcheck utility. due to the volume of text i am going to write, i would prefer it if speling errors could be highlighted/underlined like in other edititors. is this possible? please help thanks zubin lyx 1.6.1 mac os x 10.5.6 intel

International keyboard (Was: How to write degree symbol)
OK. But you can have a look if you can switch on your OS to the US international keyboard layout: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout#United_States Then the right Alt key is redefined to be the AltGr key and then you can access many more characters directly. It should be known that the US-int keyboard does modify the way the tilde, quote, and caret keys work even when not using AltGr. A similar keyboard layout that does not have the averse effects is altgr-intl, at least in KDE 3.5.10. Trouble getting a powerdot output in landscape
Hi list, Has anyone had trouble getting a powerdot doc to create a landscape .pdf? I just upgraded to 1.6.1 and re-installed everything (miktex, gv, gs, jabref,etc) but now my powerdot .lyx files display portrait instead of landscape in the .pdf output. using ps2pdf to generate it. I'm not sure what could have gone wrong. Anyone have idea or maybe experience with such a problem? Thanks

and haven't found any problems. If I ever do find problems, I have
the old documents backed up on various media, so I think I'm set.
This seemed like it might be useful for converting all one's LyX
files to a single format, so please let me know if there are obvious
errors in what I did.

simple diff between two versions?
I have a multi-file document (about 10 child documents), and I was wondering if there is any way to generate an output document that highlights the changes made. I know about the excellent track changes feature, but I was not enabled when I made the changes. I'm using version control, so I can generate a diff of the raw lyx file, and I can diff the generated pdfs, but neither of these yield a particularly legible output. I just tried turning on track changes, then pasting the new version over the old one, but the change tracking then accurately highlights that I deleted the entire old version, and created a new one, rather than doing a diff-type comparison. I'm trying to do this so my PhD supervisor does have to read the entire 230-page document again to examine the changes I've made. Any suggestions? Thanks, Cameron.

This feature is often requested, but no-one has found the time to implement it. It's not at all trivial. But what you can do is export both documents to LaTeX and then use latexdiff (from CTAN.org) to do what you're wanting to do. You won't see it in LyX, but your supervisor will thank you rh

I simply use a ^\circ in math mode. This works well. Yes I alway do from the math mode, after power command ^ then from operators math toolbar, I select circ. So it is exactly ^\circ. And the result so far it's ok to me. --- was

In your document settings you haven't specified a font, so you are using LaTeX's default font named Computer Modern. Hi, I'm using LYX in ubuntu. I would like to know how to change the font in a document. I used http://www.yourfonts.com/print.html to create a font with my own handwriting and it would be nice to be able to use it with lyx (i can use it with openoffice) Thanks for the help Ignacio

I don't know how I got LyX 1.6.1 but think that my sources list was still programmed to testing and apt-get upgraded, before I changed it to Lenny. I usually keep this system as testing without change, but have to have it reliable for a few months and might then change back to testing. LyX 1.6.1 didn't work very well at all, a few glitches. How to write degree symbol ° ?
I have big probems for entering a degree symbol as in 'cos 30°'. If entered as
such from the keyboard in TeX, it's not accepted. If entered in Lyx, it's
represented as '\lyxmathsym{\textdegree}', but when it comes to producing
output an error is the result.
The '\textdegree' alone seems not visible in the output. In some
places '\mbox{°}' is accepted, where the degree symbol is internally written
as \textdegree. It seems in fact that it is the 'lyxmathsym{}' which is not
understood in producing the output.

code. It is slightly changed by the TeX - Lyx converter and gives centered

Having graphics centered, is IMO a very common need, and most people
probably use the paragraph-centering because it is the only thing the
GUI offers.
LyX then creates a:

Yes. It is basically equivalent to \centering. The environment form is just
easier to create for LyX (otherwise, we'd need to end the switch, which is
rather complex).

It shouldn't. The whitespace in case of the center environment is caused by
centering being a so called trivlist.

Font and layout problem
Hi @, This is my first post here and I couldn't really spend many days sifting through archives to avoid repeating, so if the answer to this has been given before I apologize and would appreciate a quick pointer. I'm still in the getting-started phase. Attached is a screenshot showing two problems: 1. The letter ĵ, a special letter of the Esperanto language, is represented as a black box in pdf and dvi output. This happens with most available fonts save a very few (used here is Palatino). I'll have to do a row of experiments to find out exactly which ones. Strangely, all other 5 diacritical letters used in Esperanto work fine. They are part of the ISO 8859-3 charset, which I use for this document (utf-8 produces an error with latex upon exporting - I may post a separate message about this later if I don't find what's missing). If I produce the very same document in OpenOffice with the very same fonts, everything is fine. That is, I'm just guessing they are the same because they're the same names. Does Lyx use own font files or aren't they part of the system? 2. The line formatting isn't exactly as expected, some simply seem to escape justification. Is it because I don't have en Esperanto dictionary installed and it doesn't know how to properly hyphenate? This shouldn't actually affect line length. I am with Lyx 1.6.1 under Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) on a Thinkpad T61p. The document used for trying this out is an Esperanto translation of Ayn Rand's Anthem and uses the 'book' template. I simply use a ^\circ in math mode. This works well.

insert delimiters dialog bug
Hi, I am using lyx 1.6.1 and whenever I use the insert delimiters dialog from the math panel with unmatched delimiters, it never lets me choose the second delimiter: upon choosing one bracket, either left or right, the dialog quits and lyx inserts whatever was selected for the second bracket. This makes sense when you want matching brackets, but not if you don't. Can anyone confirm this bug?

In the UserGuide you find in sec. 6.15.3 you find under From ISO8859--2 through 4: a j with a circumflex and can see that it appears correctly in the PDF output. (You must have the Latin Modern Fonts installed. They are provided as separate Debian/Ubuntu package and also as TeXLive package.) Does Lyx use own font files or aren't they part of the system? LyX doesn't have fonts. All fonts you can select in the document settings are the ones installed in your LaTeX system. Is it because I don't have en Esperanto dictionary installed and it doesn't know how to properly hyphenate? The dictionary is only needed to be able to spell-check your document. But there is an aspell Esperanto dictionary available: ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict/0index.html For hypehnation, you must install Esperanto hyphenation patterns. rubber lengths! I have no idea why this would happen, but either (a)
there's some serious problem in your BibTeX file or else (b) there's a

maybe it's an extra } or { somewhere? But it's hard to debug from here.

Well after exporting from lyx to plain tex and a LOT of trial and error in
Kile I came to the following simple workaround:
If I remove \usepackage{babel} it all works and my references show. If I
leave \usepackage{babel} I get the weird citation white space errors.
Beats me why this should be so. Im just happy it works now. Now I just need
to be able to tell lyx not to add the babel package. Any idea how I would do
that? Otherwise I will have to do pdf generation from Kile.

English appearing backwards
I have Lyx 1.6.1 installed on a Hebrew installation of Ubuntu 8.04. I can create Hebrew documents fine (from what I can tell). However, _English_ documents come out with their text going right to left, like this: sdrawkcab si sihT I have read the relevant pages on the wiki, but nowhere does it discuss this problem: http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/HebrewOnLinux http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/Hebrew I intend on creating documents with mixtures of English and Hebrew text. Cannot export to PDF
When I try to export to PDF, I get this error:

I wasn't able to read the size data for this font,
so I will ignore the font specification.
[Wizards can fix TFM files using TFtoPL/PLtoTF.]
You might try inserting a different font spec;
e.g., type `I\fontsame font id=substitute font name'.
This is pretty much a new install, I changed some things trying to get
better Hebrew support but nothing that seems relevant. Googling the
error message I see that this is not an uncommon occurrence, however,
I do not see a solution!

Ever since I installed kde4, lyx has been behaving very weirdly.

highlight spelling errors
hi there i am a newbie to lyx. i have previously used the winedt latex package for windows. i have installed lyx, cocoaspell and downloaded a PhD thesis template to start writing my thesis. i really like the look and feel of lyx and would prefer to use it BUT... i cannot see a way to automatically highlight spelling errors as i type them, or indeed highlight them WITHOUT running the spellcheck utility. due to the volume of text i am going to write, i would prefer it if speling errors could be highlighted/underlined like in other edititors. is this possible? please help thanks zubin lyx 1.6.1 mac os x 10.5.6 intel

International keyboard (Was: How to write degree symbol)
OK. But you can have a look if you can switch on your OS to the US international keyboard layout: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout#United_States Then the right Alt key is redefined to be the AltGr key and then you can access many more characters directly. It should be known that the US-int keyboard does modify the way the tilde, quote, and caret keys work even when not using AltGr. A similar keyboard layout that does not have the averse effects is altgr-intl, at least in KDE 3.5.10. This is pretty much a new install, I changed some things trying to get
better Hebrew support but nothing that seems relevant.

Hi, Yes, please donate! A few months ago, Abdel agreed to work on this feature. We each gave a bit to the pot and we are pretty close to the target. Thanks, attached. I am using Microsoft's Tahoma font, which I took from a Hebrew Windows computer so it has the Hebrew glyphs. This is the best-looking standard Hebrew font there is. Trouble getting a powerdot output in landscape
Hi list, Has anyone had trouble getting a powerdot doc to create a landscape .pdf? I just upgraded to 1.6.1 and re-installed everything (miktex, gv, gs, jabref,etc) but now my powerdot .lyx files display portrait instead of landscape in the .pdf output. using ps2pdf to generate it. I'm not sure what could have gone wrong. Anyone have idea or maybe experience with such a problem? Thanks
