Getting RevTeX 4.1 layout to work

2010-07-28 Thread Daniel Joshua Stark
Dear All,

I'm using LyX 1.6.7 on Mac OS X 10.6.4.

I've installed the revtex4-1.layout file in /Library/Application
Support/LyX-1.6/layouts

I use the 2009 Tex Live distribution of MacTeX and it is up-to-date. When I
check in texmf-dist/tex/latex/revtex, revtex4-1.cls is present.

I've run sudo texhash several times and have reconfigured LyX several times.
However, whenever I try to select "Article (REVTeX 4.1)" in Lyx, I get the
following error: "The document class revtex4-1 could not be loaded."

I'm at a lost as to why it is not loading. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Confused,

A kind soul followed up on this and offers the explanation that your
browser does automatic line wrapping that are not part of the original
file, and a copy-paste from that messes up with how LyX parses the file.
This is a logical and very plausible explanation of the problem you have
encounter.

I have put the layout file available for download from
http://www.physics.utoronto.ca/~jrioux/resources/lyx/

Could you please try to download this file? This should avoid any
copy-paste problems. Meanwhile the layout file that I am using also
evolved a bit.

Thanks,

Julien

Hi Julien,

Thanks for putting together the revtex4-1 layout!

I had trouble using the version you posted for Lyx 1.6.x, similar to
that discussed in
http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg84557.html

It turns out that all it was was that my browser broke up the
\DeclareLatexClass line, moving the \DeclareLatexClass command to the
line following the # , which caused the LyX Reconfigure command to fail.
 Moving the # , \DeclareLatexClass..., and (REVTEX 4.1)} [3 separate
lines as my browser gave it to me] to the same line resulted in a
working LyX Reconfigure.

Sorry to send this mail to you. I tried to reply to Eric Cavalcanti,
who posted the question, but I can't get to a working reply screen.
Your email address was the only one I found, so I thought you might be
able to forward or post this in case Eric is still having trouble.

Thanks again for your work on this.

Dear all,

I'm using lyx2.0 in mac and trying to install revtex4-1 use it for an article in
APS. I put all the concerned files (class, style and layout) in concerned
folders, did the sudo texhash in Terminal, and reconfigure in lyx. Everything
seems to go ok without any problem.

But as I go to the Lyx -> Documents-> setting, I do not find the "article
(revtex4-1)".

Can anybody help?

Thanks.

The error message is saying that the layout file could not be loaded. If
you've downloaded the layout file from the wiki here:

http://wiki.lyx.org/Layouts/Revtex4-1
then the problem is that this is for LyX 2.0, not for LyX 1.6.x. I've
added a note to that effect to the wiki.

The error messages for this kind of thing will be more informative in 2.0.

Hi Julien,

I'm having a similar problem and I've tried the layout file you posted below,
but with no success. I put it on LyX-1.6/layouts and ran Reconfigure but I got
the error message:

"The system reconfiguration has failed. Default textclass is used but LyX may
not be able to work properly. Please reconfigure again if needed."

Reconfigure works fine when I remove the offending revtex4-1.layout file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Eric

Hi,

I've been using this layout without problem with LyX 1.6.5 and 1.6.9
(developer's bug fix version) and with both MiKteX/Windows or
TeXLive/Ubuntu, so I am a bit surprised here.

But I found this:

http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyXWinTips#toc9

Could you please try if the section "Trouble Configuring LyX ..." helps
you here? If not I would ask to provide the output you get on the
terminal when reconfiguring LyX, so that we can better identify the
source of the problem.

Hi and thanks for the response!

I apologise, I should have given more details of my system. I use
MacOS 10.5.8, and recently installed texlive2010 through the mactex
distribution (over an old texlive2007). I installed revtex4-1
following the instructions on the package's readme and apparently had
no problems there.

OK so could you capture the output of the LyX's configuration step? To
do this you would start lyx from a terminal, click the "Tools >
reconfigure" menu, then investigate what you get in the terminal window.

Also specify the debug flag "tclass" (see
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/Troubleshooting#sLyX.Troubleshooting_11 ) when
launching LyX to get further info.

Otherwise I don't know what's the problem and can't help you.

To start LyX from terminal use something like:
% /Applications/LyX-1.6.8.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx

On a Mac it is LyX -> Reconfigure...

Thanks again Julien. This is the output I get after clicking
LyX/Reconfigure (note there's no Tools/Reconfigure in my version) when
launching lyx with -dbg tclass. I looked up the latexconfig.lyx file
mentioned in the end, but it wasn't very enlightening. Does this give
you any hint to why the reconfiguration failed?

It's LyX -> Reconfigure on a Mac in general. It doesn't depend on -dbg...

After "checking for document class report..." the check for revtex follows.
Unfortunately there is no output to indicate the failure.
See the debug output below from my LyX terminal startup.

This is not very helpful - I know.

It looks like the test for document classes aborts too early.
The configure.py script (which does the work for reconfigure)
discards all output not starting with + and hides the
error messages to diagnose the cause of the problem. :(

I propose to create a ticket in LyX trac here:

Thanks Stephan. Perhaps I should clarify that the problem only occurs when I
have the revtex4-1.layout file that I created from copying and pasting Julien's
code into a text file in the layouts folder.

Eric

OK so could you capture the output of the LyX's configuration step? To do
this you would start lyx from a terminal, click the "Tools > reconfigure"
menu, then investigate what you get in the terminal window.

Also specify the debug flag "tclass" (see
 http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/Troubleshooting#sLyX.Troubleshooting_11 ) when
launching LyX to get further info.

Otherwise I don't know what's the problem and can't help you.

Yes, I know. This issue is not to be expected when using the standard setup.
But the impossibility to diagnose an error situation is a bug too.

It's very hard to guess what's so special at your machine to make it fail.
I added the revtex4-1.la
