LyX 2.3.6 Windows Installer
As noted in the announcement of LyX 2.3.6, there is now an updated installer available for Windows, including a 64 bit version. In order to update to 2.3.6 on Windows using the new installer, you should uninstall the previous 2.3 releases using the uninstaller or from within the control panel/Windows settings beforehand. Make sure to not install LyX 2.3.6 into an existing LyX directory by choosing an empty folder for the installation. [ANNOUNCE] Windows Installer Update
Due to a packaging error, the version of LyX 2.3.0 installed by the '004' installer will not preview jpg or tiff files. An updated installer has therefore been uploaded. Users who want or need such previews can either install the new version or follow the instructions from this bug report: https://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/11186#comment:17 Thanks to everyone who worked to correct this problem.

Due to a bug in MiKTeX, installation of LyX 2.3.0 can sometimes cause the MiKTeX installation to be corrupted. We highly recommend that MiKTeX users update to the latest version *before* installing LyX 2.3.0. (If you run into problems, the solution will be to uninstall MiKTeX and then re-install.) (See https://github.com/MiKTeX/miktex/issues/82 for more info.) Below is the original announcement for 2.3.0. Public release of LyX version 2.3.0 == With this release, LyX celebrates 22 years of existence. The 2.3 series has a rich set of new features compared to the current stable series. LyX 2.3.0 is the culmination of two years of hard work. An overview of the new features can be found here: https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX23 You can download LyX 2.3.0 from https://www.lyx.org/Download/. For Windows users, if you installed a pre-release of LyX 2.3.0, you should uninstall that version before installing this newer release. We hope you will enjoy the result! If a file from an earlier version of LyX is opened *and saved* with any version of 2.3.x, then the original file will automatically be backed up. The backup file will be found in the backup directory, if one is set under Tools> Preferences> Paths, or else in the same folder as the original file, if no backup directory is set. The filename of the backup file will be: ORIGNAME-lyxformat-NUM.lyx~ where NUM is the LyX format number of the original file. In the case of a 2.2.x file, this will be 508, but in the case of older files it will be different. The file lib/RELEASE-NOTES lists some known issues and problems compared to the current stable releases (LyX 2.2.x). We strongly recommend that packagers of LyX on various platforms and distributions read this file. As with any major release, this one comes with a lot of new features but also some bugs. If you think you have found a bug in LyX 2.3.0, either email the LyX developers' mailing list (lyx-devel at lists.lyx.org), or open a bug report at https://www.lyx.org/trac/wiki/BugTrackerHome . I can see why you would prefer that. MiKTeX is such a (in my opinion, necessarily) complicated system. You are right that the goal of updating MiKTeX automatically is to save the average user from doing those steps themselves. I have heard some negative experiences from users, e.g. that the update does not work or as you mentioned the mirror is not working. However, I have also heard a lot of positive responses from users for whom the 2.3.0 installer has worked very well with no issue at all. > PS: Even if LyX is not changed this way, I hope the detailed experience I > give above is helpful for the developers. Sorry for the long post. Thank you for taking the time to write up your post. I found it helpful and learned more about MiKTeX. Presumably the date can be found from Uwe's > announcements to lyx-devel. Thanks for the feedback, Andrew and for pointing out the issue with the message above. After thinking about this for a bit, I don't think the average user will actually care what their version number is or what the required version number is. All they need to know is that MiKTeX needs to be updated. For advanced users who might be interested in that information, we can give it in the details on the Wiki page. For example, on the Wiki page we can list the technical package repository number that is required, and we can specify the steps to see what package repository number you're currently at. So I propose to change the first part to something like: Your MiKTeX installation must be updated in order for LyX 2.3.0 to work. Choose "Continue" to ... Sentence "For most users, choosing "Continue" is the appropriate choice." sounds definately better. But I am not inexperienced user and for me minimum information why should I continue (but more specific than only "LyX requires") is better. A lot of detales would be too complex. "More details" with some information (one sentence about broken installation and link to wiki) would be ideal: who want can go to wiki and read detales, one sentence for not so curious and possibility not to read any burdensome information for totally inexperienced users. Happines for all :).
RE: Feedback on dialog for Windows installer (round 2)
Hello, I want to join to this discussion again and would like to clarify my previous post that had suggested a totally different approach. I am a very frequent user of MikTeX in the sense that I update it almost weekly basis. MikTeX is a very “good” TeX system but sometimes it acts awkward. For example, sometimes the mirror that has been set to be used is not working. You have to quit the updater and use another program to select a working mirror. Sometimes, it gives some error out of nowhere and nothing can be updated. I have to wait one or two days, and when I retry to update it just works fine. Sometimes, I need to do several consecutive updates to achieve a successful update and to be sure the system updated correctly, and I have to restart my windows. Sometimes, I just feel that I have to restart my PC after an update to get it right because Windows (e.g. version 10) is also changing frequently (e.g. admin policies) due to its new approach of updating. Sometimes, although many packages are available for update, MikTeX will not update them but make an update to MikTeX itself. İf this is the case, I need to re-run the updater to update the packages. Sometimes, I download packages to my PC and update them from the PC without using Internet. This also happens if I have some issue with my PC’s internet… In one case, when I updated MikTeX, it removed the setting of the local TeX folders, which I had to setup again. There are other cases, where MikTeX looks like updated correctly and without an issue, but in fact, it will not run correctly. I have seen many posts to TeX SE, where users encounters this sort of issues. Most of the time, waiting one or two days solves the issue, which I believe MikTeX developer(s) fix the associated problem. With the new version of MikTeX, I can see that the updater, package manager and configurer are all collected in a new GUI called “MikTeX console” (at least just last week I saw it), and I can see that some of the features of the previous GUI are not transferred to the new GUI. Maybe update process will be more smooth from now on… In overall, MikTeX update “most of the time” is efficient, but there are cases, where the user needs to do additional attempts/operations to complete it. This requires a level of understanding TeX, LaTeX and MikTeX. Similar to MikTeX, I also like to follow the updates of LyX and use them whenever they are available. In the past, I intended to use MikTeX update feature of LyX several times, and just by chance I encounter one of the issues listed above that required additional steps to complete MikTeX update. Therefore, I had to cancel LyX update in all of these cases. This was more problematic, because it gives the feeling that I may have messed up with LyX installation. After these experiences, I have never used LyX feature of updating MikTeX, and whenever I am updating LyX, I first update MikTeX separately. If there is something work with MikTeX, although it looks like it is updated correctly, I go back o basic and fix it by running simple “hello world” type .tex documents on editor-type programs (e.g. TeXMaker, WinEdt). I understand that the intend of LyX is make sure that the user does not get into the LaTeX, TeX or MikTeX, particulary for new and novice users. However, they will eventually need to understand the basics of LaTeX and MikTeX, to juggle around when they want to do more things in LaTeX. I also understand that it would be really convenient for the first time users of LyX to have this feature, but the possibilities of having additional operations and users canceling LyX setup should also be evaluated. So, as a conclusion, my suggestion is not incorporate MikTeX update into LyX setup, and leave that responsibility of having a working (Mik)TeX system to the user in the first place. Bests, BE PS: Even if LyX is not changed this way, I hope the detailed experience I give above is helpful for the developers. Sorry for the long post. Dear Scott, MiKTeX 2.9 has been available since 2010 and the *only* version available since 2014; see https://miktex.org/releases. Hence the message in your proposed dialogue LyX requires MiKTeX 2.9 or later. Your version is X.X. Choose "Continue" to automatically update MiKTeX now, or "Cancel" to stop the LyX installation. If you do not understand this message, you should choose "Continue". Cancel Continue doesn't make much sense (to me). It is the package repository number that is critical, currently at 6664 at time of writing (see https://miktex.org/ under Package Repository) but I don't know what that was at the time the update problem arose and in any case it is likely to be confusing to an average user. I think it would be better to use a date: "LyX requires MiKTeX 2.9 updated later than /mm/dd" (and that format of date to avoid ambiguity around dd/mm/ versus mm/dd/). Presumably the date can be found from Uwe's announcements to lyx-devel. Andrew --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

Message is quite clear, but "If you do not understand this message, you should choose "Continue"." says too little and indirectly states, that user is dumb. I've read previous thread and discussion in lyx-devel. Maybe this sentence can be replayced with warning about not working LyX? Something like "Not upgrading MiKTeX can leave LyX in not working condition" ("can broke LyX" would be more simple to understand, but isn't correct technically, as I understand). This sentence informs user, why it should upgrade, not only urges to upgrade. Such warning can be compromise with Uwe too, I think :). And congratulations with release of such good program. [announce] again a new Windows installer for LyX 2.2.2 is available
Dear LyX on Windows users, especially new users or those who installed LyX the first time on a computer recently encountered error messages of missing LaTeX packages. There was a bug in the LaTeX distribution MiKTeX that is used by LyX for Windows that disabled any LaTeX package downloads. This bug is now fixed and I therefore uploaded a new installer. For those who had the mentioned errors, the only way to fix them is to do this: 1. uninstall LyX _completely_ (assure that MiKTeX is selected in the uninstaller to be uninstalled as well) 2. reinstall LyX 2.2.2 using the new installer: ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/2.2.2/LyX-222-Bundle-4.exe Changelog of the new installer: - fix bug that spell checker for Vietnamese was not installed - fix bug that thesaurus for Ukrainian was not installed - updated to MiKTeX 2.9 build 6219 (fixes problems with the update of LaTeX packages) - updated to Python 2.7.13 - updated to ImageMagick 7.0.4-5 - updated to JabRef 3.8.1 - updated to Perl 5.22.3.1 - updated thesaurus for Ukrainian - updated spell checker dictionaries for English (CA, GB and US) and Ukrainian (To benefit from them you must uninstall an already installed LyX 2.2.x and then use this installer.) regards Uwe
[announce] new Windows installer for LyX 2.2.2 available
Dear LyX on Windows users, some of you might have recently encountered problems with the PDF output of your LyX files. documents that worked fine lead now to LaTeX errors. These problems were introduced by a major package refactoring of the LaTeX distribution MiKTeX that is used by default by LyX on Windows. There are 2 ways to solve them: 1. run MiKTeX's update program _twice_ If this does not solve your problems and you still get LaTeX errors, the easiest way is to 2. uninstall MiKTeX _completely_ and subsequently install LyX 2.2.2 over your existing LyX installation using this new installer: ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/2.2.2/LyX-222-Bundle-3.exe It will automatically reinstall a new MiKTeX and set up everything for you. This might take some time depending on your Internet speed because LyX needs a lot LaTeX packages that will be downloaded. regards Uwe

Hello José, 2 GB is only necessary if you install ALL things that LaTeX offers. LyX needs only about 70 MB. Therefore install LyX once while you are connected to the Internet and you will get automatically all LaTeX-packages used by LyX. Note that you can alternatively also install LyX while not being connected to the Internet. Then go afterwards to the University or an Internet Café, connect to the Internet start LyX and then use the menu Tools-> Reconfigure. Then LyX also tries to download and install all necessary LaTeX-packages from the Internet. If I understand correctly, the Windows version will have features that are not available in the Linux or Mac versions. RE: testers needed for LyX\'s Windows installer
I've noticed the warning in the installer, but I've installed 2.0.3 in the same way and I haven't noticed any problems. MikTeX is the portable version and sits in a directory were I've got write access. Lyx is using it (got multiple versions on the computer) since the right folder is in lyxrc.dist, preferences dialog and in tex information, and I've got no latex in my path. I can't see any new files in MikTeX's bin folder. I will try later on a computer were I've got admin privileges. ftp down -> Windows installer not working!
The ftp server(?) is down. The mirrors may be up, but the lyx installer (lyx-1.6.6-1-Installer.exe) is not using the mirrors for loading aspell. At that point (downloading aspell6-en-6.0.0.exe) it waits a bit, says "connection failed", and offers a choice between cancelling or trying again. Try again is useless, cancel completes a Lyx installation with spell check greyed out. Like this for at least a day now. Please can someone fix the aspell download server that the above installer uses? Also does anyone know how to tell Lyx installed after cancelling aspell download to use an instance of aspell separately installed?

I'm trying to advise a friend on installation of Windows LyX (advice at long distance!). From looking at the web site and the wiki, I'm not sure what you are talking about in reference to these two installers. Which is which? And which is likely to cause my fried less grief? This was exactly why I was asking. I am recommending Lyx to a Latex novice who never heard of Miktex & Co. I put up a small feature comparison table at: http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/Windows#sWindows.Windows_2 Since I never used the official installer I would ask whether someone could complete the information. What I am also interested in: Does a user need to be Administrator in windows to have the installer automatically install packages upon need? Greetings, Timmie

Help! Problem with Windows Installer
Hi everyone, I have a problem installing the Windows version of Lyx in my computer. I tried both the LyxWinInstaller and the lyx-144-5.exe installer, and in both cases I get the following problem. Once I install all the components such as MikTex, Gsview, etc., there is a black window that shows up and says +checking for default encoding (this may take a long time) + checking for ec fonts... yes + checking for ec support in LaTex format... yes and then it gets stuck even after 8 hours. Although it says it takes a long time, I feel there's something going wrong. I had installed Lyx in my previous computer and everything worked out fine, but for some reason, everytime I want to install it in my current computer, it gets stuck in this step. Help!!! Thanks. Joel.

The installers on lyx.org (ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/contrib/aspell6-windows/) do allow to choose to install just for the current user. I went ahead and tried this and now I get a different error when spellchecking in lyx 1.5.b2: (translated German) The spellchecking Program could not be started. The file "C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\CURRENT_USER\Anwendungsdaten\Aspell\Data\iso-8859-1.cset" can not be opened for reading. This is no surprise, as the folder "Data" does not exist there. However I finally did manage to get spellchecking to work by copying the folder "C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\All Users.WINDOWS\Anwendungsdaten\Aspell\Dictionaries" which contained "iso-8859-1.cset" to "C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\CURRENT_USER\Anwendungsdaten\Aspell\" and renaming it to "Data". So at least on my machine it does not seem possible to get a running Lyx 1.5.0. beta2 out of the box by just using the provided installer from lyx.org on a clean winxp system (by clean I mean a system which has had lyx 1.4.4. installed and working but everything related to lyx1.4.4/miktex/aspell/imagemagic/gsview etc. was uninstalled prior to the 1.5.b2 installation). The miktex problem is still hazy to me, because it was downloaded and installed during the lyx installation but lyx somehow did not seem to realize it has happened, because After finishing the miktexinstallation and returning to the lyx installer, the lyxinstaller says that miktex was not installed properly. The other (aspell) problem is actually two problems: during installation the dictionaries can not be downloaded by the installer (404 error). This might be due to a wrong url in the lyxinstaller. When installing aspell6 dictionaries manually afterwards, the other problem occurs (see above), which probably is caused by lyx expecting different paths then aspell actually resides in. PS. Just for curiosity, what are the philosophies behind the two different windows installers (the one found on the lyx.org ftp and the one from berlios)

I think this issue has been reported before (http://article.gmane.org/gmane.editors.lyx.general/36911/match=all+users+aspell). It may be that LyX automatically looks for Aspell in the Documents and Settings tree for the currently logged on user, and not in the All Users tree. If that is true, installing Aspell just for your current id should fix it. /Paul

MiKTeX and Aspell Problems in Lyx 1.5.0 beta2 windows installer
First of all thank you for this beta number two, because I was able to get Lyx 1.5. to work (which I couldn't do with beta1 on my transmeta crusoe notebook running winxp - see previous post for details) I tried the "through the net" binary and the bundle binary provided on lyx.org on an empty system (no MiKTeX etc.) Two problems occurred however: 1. During the installation MiKTeX was downloaded and installed BUT the Lyx installer said that it was not installed correctly and if I wanted to try again. Trying again resulted in an error saying the MiKTeX folder was not empty. If I continue the installation (ignoring the error), this resulted in problems when I try to open my lyx files. So what I think is, that Lyx somehow does not know of miktex, even though it is there (I even updated miktex and did a reconfigure of lyx, but the problem still persisted) I was able to resolve the problem by using the installer provided by berlios. (however after installing with this installer I did not like the console window which seemed to slow down my lyx, so I reinstalled lyx with the lyx.org installer, which resulted in lyx working properly without console but with miktex functioning...) 2. The second problem is that the installer was not able to download the aspell dictionaries selected (en + de) resulting in the lyx spellchecking not to work. I tried to install the corresponding aspell6 dictionaries found on the lyx.org wiki manually, but lyx still couldn't find the dictionaries. Can anyone help, especially with the aspell problem? Thanks a lot. sk

Additional info, although "install for all users" was chosen, looking at the System/Installed Software list of Windows, all the dictionaries obviously are only registered for "current user", while "Aspell Data" is registered for everyone. Again, I am sure that this is not caused by a rights problem during installation. Regards, Tom Schlangen -- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Windows Installer Aspell prob
Hi, Installing 1.44-3 official installer on either W2k or XPPro, and chosing the option of Aspell being available for all users, plus some suitable dictionaries. Then, under LyX, invocation of the spell checker (using F7 key) results in the following error: http://www.tubes.mynetcologne.de/misc/aspell_prob.gif Indeed, there is no sub-folder called "Data" whatsoever below sub-folder "Aspell", as given in the error message above. But, chosing the "for current user only" Aspell install option instead during LyX installer run will leave a working spell checker... BTW, for some reason I am positive that this is no access rights problem during installation. Regards Tom Schlangen --
