RE: Forgetful - keyboard shortcuts needed please

2012-07-28 Thread David Griffith
I am not familiar with your keyboard. I personally, although using a 2011
IMac use and extended keyboard from I think 2004 as I much prefer it.
Anyway base on the 2011 keyboard and my classic version I think you may be
confusing the six pack cluster of keys with the numpad. I do not know about
MBA or MBP layouts but on a normal keyboard the numpad does not have bespoke
home end page up and page down keys. These are instead, at least on my
keyboard held in the cluster above the main cursor keys to the left of the
numpad.

The easiest way though to tell for sure is to hit VO K to turn key describe
on and just hit your keys to hear their function. Press escape to return to
normal.

Subject: Forgetful - keyboard shortcuts needed please

Hi folks
I must be getting old because every time I try to switch completely from
Windows to IMac I forget shortcuts. help please with my setup:
Using the new BlueTooth IMac keyboard but with a nifty little bluetooth
numeric keypad that locks into the main keyboard.
Think I've got the NUMPAD layout set up correctly but can't work out which
combination of function key and numpad keys to use for Home, End, PageUp,
PageDown etc.

Any help welcomed please.
Dennis.

Yes, it has been discussed, a lot, but not explained what was its purpose.

Thanks for clarifying that. I am sure that took less time, than my sifting
through archives.

If I needed more information, than what the app does, it would behoove me to
look through archives.
There is a lot of traffic on this list, and I appreciate it, immensely, but
some of us are relatively new to using Mac software, and it shouldn't be
assumed that everyone knows the purpose of an app that is being discussed.
Just a simple mention in the original thread that this app is a backup
utility would suffice.

Thanks,

Re: Fleksy [Revisited]

2012-07-28 Thread Andrea Breier
The only thing I would add is that the settings for fleksy is under the main
settings menu. You can go in there and add favorites. You just type
telephone numbers of the people you text most. Just type a phone number,
then a comma then the next phone number and so on. Then these shortcuts
will show up in fleksy, as you flick to the right after composing your
message. Also in settings you can insert your phone number and email
address, then fleksy will place a link in your texts or emails with a link
at the end of either so that any other fleksy user can read your message
then just click on the link and they will be automatically put into fleksy
so that they can respond back to you.

I hope this makes since.

these are the instructions I sent to gordon privately for anyone else who
may be struggling or need help with fleksy.

Hi Gordon this is how you use fleksy.

1. open the app and it will say loading.

2. when it is loaded and says triple tap home to start typing then you just
triple tap the home button witch will turn voice over off.

3. to type what you wish to type just tap with one finger on the screen
where you think each letter of the word you want to type is, you don't have
to be accurate.

4. swipe to the write and it will tell you what word it thinks you typed, if
it is the wrong word just keep swiping down till it finds the write word
that you meant to type. If it does not find the word you meant then just do
a swipe to the left to delete the last word it told you. Then try again on a
different part of the screen maybe a bit to the left or write of where you
first typed.

5. to put a full stop in swipe to the write again after you've typed the
word and it will put the full stop in, swipe down if you want a question
mark comma or exclamation mark. There are more advanced simbles you can put
in but not played with it yet.

Fleksy has become really useful to me over the last few weeks.

When you have finished typing what you wish to type then turn voice over
back on and if you swipe to the write a menu will come up with what you can
do with the text. It will then take you in to the section that allows you to
do the action. I do not know weather you use Audio boo but if you do do a
search for ianmcnamara and I have done a boo explaining how to use fleksy.

Hope this helps.

Re: Mail issue.

2012-07-28 Thread Robert Carter
Hi, By default, mail collapses the gmail folder. To fix it, interact with the
mailbox list and use VO and the arrow keys to move down to the gmail folder.
Once you are sitting on the folder, press vo+\ that is VO plus the backslash
key to uncollapse the folder. You will then see all of your gmail boxes again.

Mail issue.

2012-07-28 Thread Shaun Oliver
Hi all, I'm trying to change folders on my mac. somehow, the gmail folder has
become hidden, and I don't quite know how to make it visible or accessible
again. I can see my inbox, my sent items and the like, but when I go to open
the gmail folder to access folders like personal and things, I can't seem to
get mail to go there. moving through the mailboxes list doesn't allow me to
navigate to them even though I can see the gmail folder with my trackpad.
any help would be appreciated.
Shaun

After you make the drive bootable, go in to system preferences, startup disk
and choose the drive.

Once you restart, wait for a couple of minutes, command-F5 and you are on your

I believe I did. even after the clean install, nothing. I'll try it again
though in a day or to. This is frustrating as all get out. and should not need
to be done. Will try if I remember to keep you all posted.

2012-07-28 Thread Esther
Hi Sarah,

Did you also try closing all apps, deleting the plist files for storeagent and
appstore, and restarting your Mac? That's really what I thought should clear
up Paul's problem. (Detailed instruction given in the second half of my post.)

The relevant files are in your user account's Library preferences folder:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.storeagent.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist

HTH. Cheers,

Fn+Arrow Keys for Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down on Mac laptop keyboards [was Re: Forgetful - keyboard shortcuts needed please]

2012-07-28 Thread Esther
Hi Dennis,

I'm not sure what you mean by "new BlueTooth IMac keyboard but with a nifty
little bluetooth numeric keypad that locks into the main keyboard." I think you
mean that you're using an Apple Wireless Keyboard and that maybe you have
something like the Cropmark LMP Bluetooth Keypad attached to it. If this is
the case, then you're asking what the standard Mac laptop shortcuts are for
Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down, since the Apple Wireless Keyboard is exactly
like the MacBook Pro keyboard, and is almost exactly like the MacBook Air
keyboards. (Since 2011 the MacBook Air keyboards removed the "eject" key,
which was on the F12 key of earlier MBA models; there's no space for a separate
power button above the top row of keys.)

You access these keys by pressing the arrow keys in combination with the "Fn"
key in the bottom left corner of the keyboard. The bottom row of keys are: Fn
Ctrl Option Cmd Space bar Cmd Option and then the half-height arrow keys in an
inverted T shape.
Fn+Left Arrow "Home"
Fn+Right Arrow "End"
Fn+Up Arrow "Page Up"
Fn+Down Arrow "Page Down"

Other combinations are:
Fn+Delete "Forward Delete" (character)
Fn+Option+Delete "Forward Delete" (word)
Fn+Return "Enter"

This means that on a laptop if you want to go to the first element of a list,
table, or web page (such as in the Mail Messages table), the command
VO+Shift+Home is VO+Fn+Shift+Left Arrow, and moving to the last element with
VO+Shift+End is VO+Fn+Shift+Right Arrow. (Without the Shift key you are simply
moving to the first or last "visible" element, which might not be the true
beginning or end of a table).

On my laptops I use Fn+Down Arrow to cycle through the three sections of the
Dock: Applications, Files & Folders, and Trash. You can use Fn+Up Arrow to
cycle through in the reverse direction, or you can add a press of the Shift key
with either of these shortcut key combinations to reverse the direction. I
also use Fn+Left Arrow to the move to the first Application in the Dock and
Fn+Right Arrow to move to the Trash.

You can also select text by blocks of pages with Shift+Fn+Down Arrow or Up
Arrow, which is different from selecting from the present position to the
bottom or top of a document (Shift+Command+Down Arrow or Up Arrow).

My experience with the Bluetooth numeric keypad is that when first paired I
could use NumPad Commander combinations, but as soon as I needed to use a key
like "escape" on the regular wireless keyboard -- for example, if I had turned
on keyboard help mode with VO+k, and now wanted to exit this mode -- I could
only use the unmodified NumPad Commander combinations. Let me know if this is
not the case. The issue, I believe, is that keyboards on the Mac are
identified by pressing certain keys, assuming that a full keyboard is present.
And I think that when I press the "Escape" key on the regular Apple Wireless
Keyboard, the system somehow thinks that this is a keyboard without a numeric
keypad.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

2012-07-28 Thread Sarah Alawami
I already tried this and it did not work. This from a clean install, twice.

Yeah the hiding purchases thing works, but I want to install the apps lol! or
at least some of them and I sort of can't.

I'm hoping apple will fix this as i will not be able to use evernote until they
fix tis. Yes I could migrate but not all of us have a back up drive to migrate
to or they might be installing ml on a clean drive. I will keep these
instructions in mind in case my app store ever goes poof.

Take care all and hope this gets fixed.

Hi, i use fleksy with one finger and type very fast on it now. I have never
tried touch typing with two hands on the IPhone, I always thought that the
screen would be to small to touch type on the IPhone or IPod touch.

Re: Putting Mountain Lion on a bootable USB memory stick [was Re:burning mountain lion to disk]

2012-07-28 Thread Esther
Hi Geoff,

I haven't tried booting from an SD card, but the way it works for bootable
attached drives (as opposed to DVD/CD drives) when you boot up holding the
Option key is that you're focused on your regular Macintosh HD, and any press
of the right or left arrow key cycles you to the next bootable device.

Usually, I have only one other bootable drive attached, so it doesn't matter
whether I press the right or left arrow key -- the first press changes focus to
the other drive, and the second press takes me back to Macintosh HD. If you
have multiple bootable drives attached when you boot up holding the Option key,
then you cycle through the list of drive with each key press. You're supposed
to be able to drag and drop the drives into a preference order so that your
first press of the right arrow key selects the top preferred alternative boot
drive, then the next press of right arrow selects your second preferred
alternative boot drive, and if you only have three boot drives, a third press
would take you back to Macintosh HD -- your default boot drive. As Sarah said,
you can just press and arrow key and then press return to figure out which is
which. (She must have a lot of drives attached, or have partitioned her drive
into multiple bootable sections *grin*) For the rest of
us, just wait a bit after holding down the Option key at boot up, then press
your right arrow key once to change the boot drive, then press return. When I
use Carbon Copy Cloner I give my bootable clones a name -- or else I think it
comes up with the manufacturer's name for the drive. So once you've booted up,
you can tell that the "other" mounted drive is "Macintosh HD" if you've booted
from the clone. You should also be able to tell if there are no user files
directly mounted that you're in the SD drive, I think.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: burning mountain lion to disk

2012-07-28 Thread Thomas McMahan
Hi Gordon, the install dmg does turn out to be my old Lion one, glad you
pointed that out to me, had forgotten that I had intentionally put the M L one
at another place until I can back it up on thumb drive, in other words not at a
place where I am likely to drop it in trash or something like that. I checked
it and it is the 4.35 gb package, and this other one was my Lion one, which at
this point I guess would have little use for.

As for the hardware validation and control, doesn't surprise me one bit, and I
like you don't have very good feelings about that. Don't mind the validation
to a degree, but to use that as a major control factor to force customers to
buy only their product where they can intentionally inflate prices is wrong.
Going for the mark up might bring you money in the short term, but can kill in
the long term. Didn't Apple get burned with some of that in the late 80s early
90s in the question of whether to allow cloning or not? Apple didn't allow,
and Big Blue did and that is why there are so many of their look a likes around
even though Apple had the better product, the volume just pounded them. But
that discussion is more of a business strategy discussion and not really
germane to the list, so I guess I will take my punishment *lol*.

However, the validation of hardware would explain why my external cd burner
would work for some time then stopped working on my old power pc. As upgrades
would come along I guess it would verify what I was doing. To bad it didn't
verify that my cd drive wasn't working anymore, well ejecting it didn't work
anymore *lol*. If I'm lucky it might read from it but forget burning on either
one of them. Seems more if it says "unsupported" chances are it means "this
aint going to happen for you." Well just bought me a junk Windows laptop and
used it for burning instead until I got the new machine here. Took some time
and some good breaks to save up for it but got it done. Hopefully it will last
10 years like the old power pc will have done when December comes along this
year. And yes it does work fine except for the cd drive's tray, and of course
the fact that it can no longer upgrade past Tiger.

Re: Fleksy [Revisited]

2012-07-28 Thread Esther
Hi Gordon and Others,

Just to correct the name of the author of the Fleksy podcast Dennis mentioned
as David "Woodbridge":
• Fleksy release demo July 2012:
http://davidwoodbr.podbean.com/2012/07/13/fleksy-release-demo-july-2012/
Sarah also did a Fleksy podcast that you can listen to at:
http://tffp.marrie.org/486

As Geoff stated, the updated help for the current version, which has additional
features for using symbols and corrections for some of the version 1
limitations, support for import/export options, and a few other fixes, may be
found in the app. Probably the most important information is to keep typing
without waiting to hear the letters announced and just assume that the app will
identify the word you typed in one of the selections that you flick through.
Occasionally there will just be certain words that aren't in it's dictionary,
and you will have to slowly type and add these in. Or certain long, and
complicated words will better be entered if you carefully find the first few
letters, then revert to just "guessing" the positions of the other letters.

I think the current version is not really optimized for the iPad, and you'll
find if you explore the keyboard that the layout of the Fleksy keyboard
occupies a much larger portion of the screen than you're used to using, so you
have to "exaggerate" the placement of the keys in your touch gestures to use
this at present.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Mountain Lion App store question

2012-07-28 Thread Esther
Hi Paul, Sarah, and Others,

I did some research, and there's an Apple Support document about "Hiding and
Unhiding Purchases":
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928

This is supposed to cover the case where you delete purchases and can't find
them again, but it doesn't quite sound like your problem. (Also, the document
is dated October 2011, so I don't know whether Mountain Lion changes things).
When I tried this on my system (still on Lion) there was, indeed, a "hide"
button in the App Store purchases list (column 4 of 5), and pressing it made
the item go away entirely (no dimmed button; it simply no longer showed up in
the list of purchased items). I was able to unhide items by following the
directions in the support document:

1. Open the Mac App Store.
2. Choose Store > Sign In, and enter your Apple ID and password.
3. Choose Store > View My Account.
4. Click on View Hidden Purchases from the Account Information page.

This was useful to know and it seems worth posting in case someone else hits
this issue, but doesn't seem to fix your problem.

My guess is that the preference files for the App Store somehow got corrupted
on your system. I'd try quitting all applications, then either deleting or
moving the two plist to your Desktop or other location, and rebooting. When
you open the App Store again it should recreate the entries with the correct
(updated) information. If not, you can always move the old plist files back to
their original location.

The relevant files are in your user account's Library preferences folder:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.storeagent.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist

You probably should quit all applications on your Mac (to include ones that
might have been purchased through the App Store), delete or move the two files
listed above (e.g., use the Command-Shift-G "Go to folder" shortcut in Finder
to go to your Library/Preferences folder). If you do this in one step remember
to type the leading tilde character that indicates your home directory,
followed by a slash, and then "Library", then slash, then "Preferences". If
you do this in two steps, use Command-Shift-H to go to your home directory,
then use Command-Shift-G and type "Library/Preferences" into the text field
with no slash at the beginning needed -- just the slash between "Library and
"Preferences". Once inthat folder find the two plist files to delete or move.
Then reboot your Mac and check that your "Purchases" and "Updates" now look
correct.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

No i believe you save it in the calendar. then you can have it remind you. but
since I don't really wish anyone a happy birthday as I always forget to add
said birthdays you will have to find the birthdays calendar and try and add
them.

I don't know how to set the notifications unto do this but I know it can be
done as I'v seen it whilst on skype with someone who did just this.

Take care.

Hi there!
In address book go to the menu vo+m or Control+f2 and arrow to card and down
arrow to add field sub menu and in there is birthday as well as others!
I suppose there will be a version in the contacts on Mountain Kitty!

Re: Fleksy [Revisited]

2012-07-28 Thread Dennis Freedman
Hi Gordon

I hope you got my text message about the Podcast that David Bridgewood did, but
I'm sure you'll find it if not.

Thanks to all, their replies were concise and should give you everything you
need. But, having been there myself, perhaps a bit more explanation is needed,
with apologies to others on the list.

I think it's the concept that is strange until you actually use it. After
pressing the Home button three times to turn VoiceOver off, you have to imagine
the blank screen is an invisible keyboard. Place your fingers where you think
the qwerty keys home row should be, and, if you're a touch typist, go from
there using all your fingers. I find it easier in Landscape mode so lock Fleksy
in Landscape via the Fleksy Settings dialog in the main Settings app. But I
know people who use Fleksy with only one or two fingers, 'guessing' roughly
where the qwerty keys would be.

So you've turned VoiceOver off, got Fleksy in either Portrait or Landscape mode
according to your preference. You can check you've got it right using the fact
that a left flick will tell you there's no text to delete. (If the keyboard's
the wrong way round, turn it round till a left flick boings at you to show no
more text to delete).
Decide on whether you're going to actually touch type or use one or two
fingers. Use a word like 'bananas' as it's a good pattern to start with.

With the bottom edge of the IPhone near you, imagine the Home row a little way
up. So the B A N A N A s will be easy for you to imagine. Just press where you
think the B will be (bottom row, nearly at the halfway point on the left side
of the row), then tap the place as on a typewriter keyboard and immediately
lift your finger off the key. You won't get feedback but should here a slight
keyclick. (I do find I have to have volume turned up when typing in a noisy
environment).

Now type the other keys - quicker I find is better. So A over to the left but a
little higher as it would be on the Home row. N back on where the bottom row
would be but a little over to the right. Etc. Etc. It's much easier if you are
actually a touch typist but not difficult once you get the hang of it if you're
not.

Once you've typed all the letters of the word in, flick to the right instead of
pressing a space bar (this does take a bit of getting used to). This brings up
the 'Suggestions' list, and, with any luck your first word should be 'bananas'.
Accept this and you're ready to type the next word. No need to press anything.
After the word is spoken, just carry on typing. If it gess the word wrong,
flick Down until Fleksy says the word you want; Up if you pass the word.

And you're on your way.

As said, if you need practical help, Gordon, message or email me and we can set
up a Skype call on Sunday.

As with anything, it does take practice.

How many of you like me remember how frustrating it was the first time you
tried to use an I-device? It took me days to get anywhere with it really,
although I think some of us may not want to admit that.

Dennis.

It has been for me, but maybe it's different for each person. When
you've done that, press the function key twice. you'll hear a little
ding sound, that lets you know you can start speaking. When you're
done, press it again, and it'll insert what you typed.

Not that I'm aware of. I just try and memorize which is what. Clumsy but it
works. it would be nice to have it boot from the card reader but via a key
holding down, but allas not yet.

Re: Mountain Lion App store question

2012-07-28 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi Esther,
Pressing the dimmed "Installed" button does nothing. I did try the update
option for the App store but that said that no updates were available.

Am I correct in thinking that Lion let you re-install items previously
purchased from the Mac Ap store?

I could create a new App Store account as you suggest but that seems over the
top. instead I have recovered a growl.app from my time machine backup and run
that. It is growl 1.4 as desired but I don't think it has installed fully as
the growl icon is not present in system preferences. Looking at the package
contents for growl.app I found a launch growl.app which let me enter the growl
preferences. This is all a bit of a hack but hopefully it will do the job.
Best regards

For those who are curious, but have not yet purchased Fleksy, the instructions

these are the instructions I sent to gordon privately for anyone else who may
be struggling or need help with fleksy.

Hi Gordon this is how you use fleksy.

  1. open the app and it will say loading.

  2. when it is loaded and says triple tap home to start typing then you just
triple tap the home button witch will turn voice over off.

  3. to type what you wish to type just tap with one finger on the screen where
you think each letter of the word you want to type is, you don't have to be
accurate.

  4. swipe to the write and it will tell you what word it thinks you typed, if
it is the wrong word just keep swiping down till it finds the write word that
you meant to type. If it does not find the word you meant then just do a swipe
to the left to delete the last word it told you. Then try again on a different
part of the screen maybe a bit to the left or write of where you first typed.

  5. to put a full stop in swipe to the write again after you've typed the word
and it will put the full stop in, swipe down if you want a question mark comma
or exclamation mark. There are more advanced simbles you can put in but not
played with it yet.

Fleksy has become really useful to me over the last few weeks.

When you have finished typing what you wish to type then turn voice over back
on and if you swipe to the write a menu will come up with what you can do with
the text. It will then take you in to the section that allows you to do the
action. I do not know weather you use Audio boo but if you do do a search for
ianmcnamara and I have done a boo explaining how to use fleksy.

  Hope this helps.

Re: Mountain Lion App store question

2012-07-28 Thread Esther
Hi Paul,

Does clicking on the dimmed button do anything? (Is it possible that the
announcement of "dimmed" doesn't reflect true status?) What happens when you
choose the "Updates" menu instead? I'd guess that if an app were purchased,
but you somehow deleted it, the "Purchased" menu entry would be dimmed but if
it were updated since it was deleted it would have an active button in the
"Updates" menu. Since Growl had a version update just last month, this should
work.

Short of that, the only thing I can think of is to create another account that
you associate with your iTunes ID for the Mac App Store. That should count as
one of your iTunes account activations, but it should treat this as though you
were starting up on a new computer -- everything should be downloadable. A bit
weird if you have to move a downloaded app that way, though.

This does bring up another potential issue about the Mac App Store: like the
App Store for your iPhone, apps can come and go. I believe that the new
version 4 of TextExpander won't be offered in the Mac App Store, because it
doesn't meet the requirements for sandboxing.

And I'm also wondering about differences between the version of DVDRemaster Pro
sold through the Mac App Store and the ones that were purchased outside the App
Store now that version 8 has arrived. It sounds as though Fairmount, the
program that you need to deal with encryption (if you don't have the relevant
bit of VLC already on your system), has been spun off to the people who make
Mac DVDRipper Pro, so they're letting us get Mac DVDRipper Pro at a discounted
price with a (paid) update to version 8 of DVDRemaster Pro (until July 31).
But this must be different for the folks who bought this through the Mac App
Store.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I tried to send this a few days ago, but I don't know if it actually went
through. I'm using an app that I need to totally start over with. It has cache
files and it says I need to clear them. I've never done this. I looked for them
using the name of the app, but that didn't seem to work. I don't know where
they should be and what they will be called.

Can someone assist?

Re:burning mountain lion to disk]

  Hi All,

The Apple Recovery Disk Assistant method is useful because it will work for
systems which come with the operating system (either Lion or Mountain Lion)
already installed -- for example, if you buy a new Mac, and want to make a
bootable recovery disk. The method of using SuperDuper! to make a bootable USB
memory stick (or SD card, as Shaun asked about) requires you to have purchased
and downloaded an update from the Mac App Store.

The information on using SuperDuper! can be found on John Panarese's
MacfortheBlind.com site:
  http://macfortheblind.com/how-to-for-the-Mac-and-OS-X
Look under the heading "How To Make a Bootable Lion Install Disk on a USB
Thumb Drive"

Another interesting point that Shaun's question about using an SD card
reminded me of -- the recent MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models come with an SD
card slot, so using this as a boot drive is particularly simple. In fact,
there's an interesting KickStarter project on for "The Nifty MiniDrive". It's
for a device that lets you insert MicroSD cards into this slot, so you can
carry additional storage capacity with you in a way that sits flush against the
edge of your laptop, rather like the Sim card slots in the iPad. This has the
largest potential advantage for MacBook Air users, since the hard drive storage
capacity can't be increased after purchase. They design this for MicroSD cards
so you can carry the cards entirely inside the laptop without having regular SD
cards extend outside the opening with the danger that they will snap off if you
leave them in the slot. At present you can buy 64 GB micro SD cards that work
in the Nifty Minidrive, but the MicroSD card format
  i
n principle can be made for up to 2 Terabyte capacity.

If you're interested, here's the URL for the Kickstarter Nifty MiniDrive page:
  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1342319572/the-nifty-minidrive
They've already raised pledges for 300 times their funding goal of $11,000 to
make the device, and there's 5 more days to still accept project backers.

  HTH. Cheers,

  Esther

do you have scripts on or off in the vo utilities? If off it is using the
system voice and you can change that via speech tab. I believe under text to
speech.

Take care.

Hi Eric,
The good news is that you don't need a monitor.
The bad news is that when I go in to system preferences and check use all F1
F2 keys etc, it forgets the changes when I restart.

If I find anything else, I will let you know.

Cheers,

Re: Fleksy [Revisited]

2012-07-28 Thread Ian McNamara
these are the instructions I sent to gordon privately for anyone else who may
be struggling or need help with fleksy.

Hi Gordon this is how you use fleksy.

1. open the app and it will say loading.

2. when it is loaded and says triple tap home to start typing then you just
triple tap the home button witch will turn voice over off.

3. to type what you wish to type just tap with one finger on the screen where
you think each letter of the word you want to type is, you don't have to be
accurate.

4. swipe to the write and it will tell you what word it thinks you typed, if it
is the wrong word just keep swiping down till it finds the write word that you
meant to type. If it does not find the word you meant then just do a swipe to
the left to delete the last word it told you.

Hope this helps.

from the Mac App store on Lion. I went to the purchases menu but could not see
an active install button for the required app. I thought that on Lion you could
re-install an App from the Mac App store via the purchases menu. the FAQW for
the Mac App store say that you can indeed re-install an An App previously
installed from the Mac App store. On Mountain Lion all that I can see is a
dimmed install button.
Is this an Apple bug?
Best regards

Paul Hopewell

Just to let people know CCC is no longer freeware.

2012-07-28 Thread Sarah Alawami
Hey all. I can't update to the latest version yet but here is what the page
says when you click check for updates.

CCC is no longer freeware. If you're using CCC 3.4 and would like to continue
using it under the "free" model, do not install this update.

If you have not donated to Bombich Software in the past, this version of CCC
will impose a 30-day trial. In order to grow our support and development team,
we have made the transition to a commercial product. This will allow us to to
continue offering frequent updates to our software, including new features.
This will also enable our stellar customer support to remain that way.
Transitioning from donationware to a commercial offering underscores our
commitment to deliver the best Mac OS X cloning and backup utility on the
market.

and this is what it says with the faq of can I use the older version.

Yes, absolutely. Note, however, that previous versions of CCC are not qualified
against Mountain Lion. Choose "Update CCC..." from the Carbon Copy Cloner menu
to see options for disabling the CCC software update checks.

If you donated in the past before jul 24 of this year where is what it says
about you downloading a free copy.
No. To express our appreciation to all of the people who have sent a verifiable
donation to Bombich Software prior to July 24, 2012 , we will grant a
registration code for CCC 3.5. If you are a previous donor and see a message
about a 30-day trial, you can retrieve your registration code. We have done our
best to automatically generate registration codes for all that have donated in
the past, so please first try to retrieve your registration code via the web,
as described below.

Please note that Carbon Copy Cloner has never been sold as part of a software
or hardware bundle in the past. Also, note that simply clicking the "I paid"
button (which would have suppressed the banners) is not the same thing as
sending a donation to us. The only way you could have donated to Bombich
Software is through a PayPal payment or a donation sent through postal mail.

If you are currently using CCC and have not donated in the past, you are
welcome to continue using any version up to and including 3.4.6 as long as you
like without purchasing a license. However, in order to qualify for a free CCC
3.5 license, you must have made a donation to Bombich Software prior to July
24, 2012. As of this date, we phased out the donation model

Here is what it says in regards to the fix for the new update.

This version of CCC requires Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion, and
is fully qualified on each of those OSes. We will continue to provide user
support and bug fixes for Tiger and Leopard users on CCC 3.4.x for a while
longer.
Recovery HD support has been overhauled to better support the concept of "one
Recovery HD partition per volume", rather than one per disk. If you have
multiple backup volumes with different OSes (e.g. Lion and Mountain Lion), CCC
can associate a Recovery HD with each one and apply the appropriate OS to each
Recovery HD partition.
We have leveraged code signing within CCC for nearly five years. For GateKeeper
compliance on Mountain Lion, however, CCC is now signed with an Apple Developer
Certificate.

Hope that helps some of you who did not read the release notes. I am
considering buying this software if it is not too much as for me it is the best
program I have ever used.

Re: Fleksy [Revisited]

2012-07-28 Thread Chris Moore
Gordon,

When you launch Fleksy you are instructed to triple click home to turn VO off.
Do this, and explore the options by flicking to the right. You will find an
option for instructions. These are very concise but precise. Failing that,
either listen to David Woodbrdge's demo podcast on www.applevis.com or within
the podcast section of iBlink radio on your iOS device.

Maybe I'm getting confused. Look at the webkit disk image and it's 40 mb. Mount
it and the app is 120. maybe that type of dmg is called something else. but
since I cannot burn a dvd even though the size shows 4.35 gb and I have a 4.7
gig dvd it should still barely fit. Should it not? maybe like I said I'm
confused. idid this only last year. lol!

Software Update also includes third party apps. Mine told me as well as the
updates for Pages and Numbers and iPhoto and updates to Daniel's voice, that i
also had an update to Lightening web browser (which I must admit only ever used

That's correct, as I said though those are Apple system apps. I should have
been more lucent in my explanation. So allow me to rephrase. If you launch
software update via the Apple menu, you will receive operating system updates
and other Apple product updates. If you launch the App Store and then
highlight the Updates radio button, you will receive updates to third party
products.

It is true that in some ways the App store is a little inconsistent. But
that's the general rule.

Re: why still so complicated to arrange a home screen?

2012-07-28 Thread Sarah Alawami
It's not that hard actually. do a search for dean's podcast at
http://blindcooltech.com on rearranging folders and stuff.

basically you have a 4 by 4 matrix for the normal home screen but once you get
in to move mode as I call it you have an 8 by 8 matrix where one column is the
rot and one column is the folder. the heap will tell you if you are in in a row
column and the sound will tell you if you are in a folder column. I can now
rearrange apps in a few minutes. In fact I need to do this as my home screen
is starting to be messy.

Here is the link for dean's podcast. it is using iOS 4 but it is the very same
concept minus the beeps i think.

http://ec.libsyn.com/p/f/9/4/f94146c1564222d1/bct1494ArrangeHomeScreen.mp3?d13a76d516d9dec20c3d276ce028ed5089ab1ce3dae902ea1d01cc8433d8cc550ad9&c_id=3022092

Take care all.

Re: mountain lion

2012-07-28 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Further to the attached I found that launching software update from the Apple
menu on Mountain Lion gave me updates for Pages and Numbers which I had
installed from the Mac App store some time ago on Lion. It did not give me
updates for third party (non Apple) Apps previously installed from the Mac App
store.
So it looks like Software Update on MOUntain Lion will update all Apple
software whether Mac OS or purchased from the App store.
Best regards

Members Contributions, please read

2012-07-28 Thread Gordon, Lynne & Tracy
Hello everybody

This point has been brought to our notice by a group member, but it is
something we have been growing concerned about for some time.

If you ask a question on the list regarding a problem you're experiencing with
your Apple hardware or a piece of related software, etc., could I ask that you
please consider responding after, rather than before, you have tried the
suggestion. Let me give you an example of what I mean.

Member "1" asks a question such as: "How do I open folder on my desktop?"
Member "2" responds by saying: "Just press Command+Down arrow when you have the
folder highlighted."

Following that reply to the question, member "1" responds with: "Thanks, I'll
try that".

That message then requires another response in which member "1" proudly tells
the group that they are now able to open folders on their desktop.

To be honest, the "Thanks, I'll try that." response was really not necessary.
Although I do concede that it's the natural thing to do in some cases.

However, may I ask you all to take a moment and just consider whether your
response really is appropriate. Consider waiting until you've actually tried
the suggested action, rather than responding before you do. That would not only
help others to help you, but it would also cut down on extraneous traffic to
the group, it would avoid wasted space in the list archives and it would also
mean that when reviewing the traffic in the group, member "2" who made the
initial suggestion to resolve the issue raised by member "1", and offer
follow-up advice or suggestions if appropriate.

What Im basically saying is please take a moment to consider your responses
before you send them. Traffic in this group is rising steadily; an absolutely
understandable and desirable circumstance as our membership increases. However,
some of the traffic is unnecessary. That is why we encourage you to use the
list archives. This has been mentioned several times both by us and also by
fellow group members. If you take a moment to do that before you ask questions,
you may very well find the answer to your problems in our repository of
knowledge which is our list archive. This way you get an answer as and when you
need it, rather than having to wait until fellow members respond.

In summary; all I'm advocating is taking a moment to consider your posts. If
you feel that your question hasn't been adequately answered by fellow members,
then by all means do follow up on it. But if it's simply a case of saying
something like "Thanks, I will try that", please delay your response until
after you have tried the suggestion, then let the group know whether or not the
responses were adequate.

We would all appreciate your cooperation here, and I think you'll find that, by
doing this, you encourage others to read your message. I happen to know that
some members deliberately avoid reading post authored by other specific members
because of this issue. That is definitely not a desirable circumstance, and we
really hope that you don't make that avoided member be you.

Thank you again, If you wish to comment on the contents of this post, please do
so off list, not on it. I promise you that every message which reaches
supp...@mac-access.net does get read, unless we know for sure it's spam or
something similar. If a group member contacts us, we will always respond in
some way.

Lynne

do you have scripts on or off in the vo utilities? If off it is using the

speech.

Hi there!
Did you check the [allow voice over to be controlled by apple scripts] check

help with the other keyboard shortcuts!
If you are using [right option key and T ] to say the time!

Your current activation keys should count as "Credits". That, William, is
exactly how they do it. They used to charge by language but now charge by
voice. For instance, if you like the "Rachel" voice, you just buy enough
credits to get that voice. If you like the "Julie" or "Alice" voices then you
do the same with those. It's actually quite simple when you get used to it.

That's exactly what the recovery tool is for Sarah. It isn't necessary to
pre-format the drive as the partition is written block by block when you
attempt to write your boot device. Sean, Try the recovery tool and point it to
your flash card and see what happens. If the flash card isn't listed in valid

Re: mountain lion

2012-07-28 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Josh

It's important to understand the differences in behaviour with the App Store.
So I will try to describe them here.

If you launch the App Store using the "App Store" menu option from the Apple
menu, then highlight the "Updates" radio button, you will receive third-party
updates only. That is to say you won't receive any operating system related
updates.

If you launch the App Store using the "Software Update" item from the Apple
menu, you will receive operating system updates only. Software Update has now
been merged with the App Store.

It is important to understand these behavioural differences, as they are
crucial to future updates which you might receive. if you launch the App Store
from the Apple menu and highlight the "Purchases" radio button, you will
receive anything which you bought via the App Store, including full operating
system downloads and third party applications.

This behaviour is new to Mountain Lion, and it's how Apple intends it to work.
So it is by design. As for VoiceOver repeating text, you may find that you
have to reload the page several times, (Command+R), in order to finally see the
results of software checks.

I hope this was of some help.

Gordon

Fleksy [Revisited]

2012-07-28 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi all

OK, given everything that's been happening recently around here, and also the
stuff that's changed regarding Mac OS X and iOS, I have totally forgotten how
to use Fleksy. I only tried it once when Lynne bought it. But I am tired of
having to use the virtual keyboard when I want to type a message which is rich
in detail. So, I guess, I have two options. Either I try to dictate messages
to my iPhone, (which I find quite irritating because it still makes errors), or
else I find a more convenient method of typing.

The hardware keyboard is an option when not portable. But when I'm in an
environment where it isn't appropriate to carry a bulky keyboard around with
me, I need to type directly into the iPhone. And that would seem to be where
Fleksy comes into play.

Could somebody who knows how to use this software well, please write to me
privately so that we can maybe discuss it without boring the group with
something already covered? I've just been checking the list archive but I
can't find something as comprehensive as I need. My address is:
gor...@mac-access.net
Thank you in advance.

Re: burning mountain lion to disk

2012-07-28 Thread Gordon Smith
Thomas

There's no such thing as a "compressed" .dmg image. Not, at least, in this
context. A disk image is just like an .iso image used in other operating
systems. Neither is compressed. The files are exactly as they would be if you
were to open a folder. That is how you're able to mount the image without the
need for decompression utilities.

I would suggest that if you have an installdvd.dmg on your desktop, it's most
likely Lion. The Mountain Lion disk image is indeed 4.35 GB which is too large
for a single-layer DVD. Apple is moving away from physical media boot systems
in favour of either USB thumb drives or Internet-based operating system
downloads.

For example, if you boot the new Mac Minis and have a blank hard drive, there's
a firmware-based recovery assistant which allows you to download the operating
system via the Internet subject to a valid Apple ID and hardware verification.
Apple is also now much more strictly validating hardware in your machines. For
instance, if you have a non-Apple authorised memory module or two in your
machine, even if they meet the technical specifications which Apple uses
precisely, the hardware validation can fail and you won't be able to download
the operating system via the recovery mechanism. The same is true if you
change the hard drive in your machine and or use SDD media in its place. The
media has to be validated and authorised by Apple otherwise the recovery
process can fail.

This is something which most people are probably not aware of, but all the same
it is now true. So, for instance, the "Lion Disk Maker" which Sarah has
recently discussed is now obsolete, as I also said in a recent reply to Sarah's
message. You can no longer create a DVD of the operating system, as the disk
image contents in the package are too large. This is no accident.

Apple really is squeezing the process tightly now, so be mindful of this if you
ever want to change your hardware configuration. To be honest, I really find
Apple's policies of hardware validation disgusting. They are effectively
telling their customers that, if they want to upgrade memory or hard drives,
they must do so using Apple-authorised components, paying Apple's massively
inflated prices.

Now, all that having been said, our machines do have hardware in them which we
didn't purchase from Apple. I performed memory upgrades on 8 of our 9 Mac
Minis. They all now have 8GB of RAM which I bought in bulk earlier this year
from Crucial. That memory seems to satisfy the validation process. What I
talk about above is information which I was given by an apple employee. It is
no secret, they are trying to squeeze out the competition.

Actually the recovery assistant tool is quite interesting because it writes
which ever operating system you happen to be using at the time to the thumb
drive. I've used this several times using both Lion and Mountain Lion. If
anybody wants a quick link to this tool, you can find it here:

Note that I haven't loaded up Mountain Lion yet to try it, but I've heard

The installer is now too large for you to burn it to a single layer DVD. So the
process is now more complex.

package contents and then shared support folder and then installed.dmg. I
haven't burned it over because at this time just have 700 gig cds so need to
get larger blank or a more than four gig thumb drive, then will burn or move it
over which ever I get first. Then will have a back up for doing a clean

You could cancel it and then see if you can see it but I don't think it's

Re: infovox ivox 3

2012-07-28 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi William,

They are charging by voice now. You can purchase credits which only cover one
voice, or multiple voices at once. The only difference being that Scandinavian
voices cost more in terms of credits. Obviously, if you already purchased a
voice pack when you had iVox 2.x or earlier, you have in a sense already
purchased the credits to redeem those voices.

What's also nice about their new system is that it is based on accounts and no
longer activation codes. If you create an account, your licenses will be
transferred to the account and you can simply log in to your account in order
to activate all the voices for which you hold a license.

Regards,
Nicolai

Esther; and Mail Archives

2012-07-28 Thread Mrs . Lynnette Annabel Smith
hello everybody

Before I go any further, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Esther, who
has just joined the Mac Access Dot Net family by taking up the offer of a free
E-Mail account. This is an offer which we extend list-wide, you only have to
ask. If you're interested in doing as Esther has done, feel free to contact us
at and talk to us about it. We offer anti-virus
scanning at the server level, and also spam protection as standard. We also
guarantee discretion and security. Anyway, you know where we are if you are
interested. Once again, welcome Esther.

Now, on to Esther's post; This information is absolutely excellent. It is why
we decided to make what was an experimental archive into a permanent one. It's
true that we too also maintain an archive whose URL you can find at the bottom
of each post to this group. But in all honesty that one is less powerful in
terms of searching for information than is the public archive at
mail-archive.com.

Be that as it may, which ever system you prefer, we encourage list members to
use the archives, that's what they are there for. If you have questions which
you think might have come up before on list, why not check the archive first?
As Esther so rightly says, you could either grab the file that Esther uploaded
to put it on to your
desktop or into the dock. That will give you a permanent shortcut to the mail
archive for this group.

Another way you could do this is by using the RSS feed which is also at the
public archive. You'll have to have an RSS reader installed, but it's a really
good function if you do. You can find that at:

The archives contain a lot of information which has been sent to this group
over the last few months. I'm not sure how long those archives are stored, but
we are actively looking into the possibility of improving that function still
further.

Anyway, as Esther says, it's much easier than even using Google to search the
archives and you may find you get answers even more quickly to your questions.

So, well done Esther for highlighting this issue. We hope that list members
will consider checking the archives before asking what they think may be common
questions. That does not, of course, mean that you can't ask questions on list
no matter how basic you think they might be. This is purely a voluntary thing;
if you do not op to use the archives, that's entirely your choice. You may
still post your question to the group.

Lynne

On 27 Jul 2012, at 23:19, Esther wrote:

• Incidentally, to find this kind of information in the archives, please either
use the Mail Archive link at the bottom of each post or a bookmark to that
page, or grab the mac-access.url file that I uploaded to the new facility for
small scripts and useful files that Lynne posted about earlier at:

• If you put that web shortcut file on your desktop or in your dock, opening
the file will open the Mail Archive page for this group in your default
browser, and you can search for content by typing your search terms into the
text box like doing a Google search specifically on this list, but with more
powerful and easier to use options.

• For example, I got the FAQ link from my earlier post by typing "InfoVox FAQ"
into the search text box and pressing return, and then opening the first linked
result. You can read down the thread by pressing Control+n or up threads with
Control+p for the next and previous posts. You can also use wild cards or
Boolean operators in the search terms, which is useful if the term is
misspelled, and you can use qualifiers that end in semi-colons like "from:" or
"sort:" to modify results. For example, to limit your searches to messages
posted by a given user, use "from:" (without quotes and with the colon at the
end ofthe word) and then type in the user name. So I could have typed:
from: Esther InfoVox sort: newest
in the search box to get all messages that I posted with InfoVox in the test
and get the results sorted by date order, newest first, instead of by relevancy
order, which is what you generally want.

Just download the voice manager, install it. If you have ivlx already on your
system it will show you the status in the activation manager.

i rebuilt my mail index but still no searches

2012-07-28 Thread william lomas
hi all i deleted the envelope data as instructed on the internet to force my
mailbox to rebuild, yet still i can not find any keywords in mail that i know
are present.
not sure as to why i can't search but i don't want to format a whole computer
just to sort out this issue. i go in to the search edit box in mountainlion and
type say sarah. i then expect all messages from sarah, or containing the word
sarah for example to appear yet i still receive an empty messages table.
