Re: How to make screenshots ona a Mac as a blind person?

2014-03-02 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
It's funny you should mention this, I used Command+Shift+4 today with VO and
succeeded in what I wanted.

Let me set the scene, as this may not work in all situations. I needed to find
the publication info for a book and the title page would not read in Adobe
Digital Editions. I began by maximising the window as hiding the other apps did
not give me what I wanted after running the Screenshot through my OCR package.
After pressing Command+Shift+4 I pressed Space and then I clicked the mouse. A
picture was taken and as luck would have it I got the info I needed. As i said
though, this was a specific case where I supposed there was not much chance of
it not working.

Take care
James

An alternative would be to use Google Chrome. It has an in-built player that is
used only within Chrome. Not an answer to your question, but a useful
alternative if the suggested offered is unsuccessful for you.

Assistance with the Calibre E-Book Library

2014-01-12 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Hi everyone,

Has anyone had any luck in using the Calibre E-Book Library Manager?

VO is able to read the titles of the windows and the menu bar, but not the
content of the windows themselves.

I have however managed to convert some books into EPUB by pure chance. So
hopefully this might be of use to someone.

After you first open the app the first screen is the welcome wizard. By
continuously pressing Enter you will eventually get to the Calibre main window.
By default the Calibre Library where your converted books are stored is placed
in your Home folder. I have no idea what the other defaults are, except that
EPUB is the default output.

To add a book you can either locate it in Finder and use "open with" to add it
to Calibre or you can add it directly from the "Add Books" option in the menu
bar. Your new book will be at the top of the list, though conveniently, the
list is not spoken. Once you select to convert the book (from the menu bar, VO
will read you the title of the book. You can convert more than one, at the same
time, but I've not tried this.

In the new window, pressing Shift+Tab followed by Enter will start the
conversion, with VO announcing its commencement. VO will not announce when it's
finished, but you'll find the converted book in your Calibre Library folder
which as I said is in your Home folder by default.

if anyone knows of any more accessible software please let me know. I hope this
is useful to someone.

Take care
James

The "Hide" command only hides the window of the current application. The "Hide
Others" command hides all of the other windows, leaving only the current
application's window visible. I guess it is used to minimise clutter on the
screen. As you have found, this will not hide the application from the app
switcher.

You can create Epub books in both Pages and Nisus Writer Pro, but I have not
had need to try this yet. There was a post some time ago on the list about
creating such a book using Pages however.

Yes, i think so. if you put the title at the very top, what Numbers calls the

Re: Numbers Question

2013-09-26 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Hi Jane,

I don't know about a script, but you can set this from within Numbers itself.

Under the "Table" menu you'll find a submenu under "Header Columns" and another
under "Header Rows". Make sure that in both submenus you select zero. I'm not
quite sure what these options do, but they allow VoiceOver to provide
alpha-numeric identifiers for each cell. I would tink that you could set this
in the "inspector", Command+Option+I. That way, you won't need to set the
option each time you open numbers or create a new table.

Take care

Re: Russian-English Dictionary accessible on a Mac with VO

2013-09-20 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Hi Mary,

I have the English French and italian Collins/Ultralingua dictionairies and
they are completely accessible except for the Flashcards. However, I think that
Russian uses a script that is not based on Latin lettering. I think it is
called Serilic. I am not sure if this will be accessible to Voice Over. If it
is the same as is used in Hebrew, then probably not.

That being said, you need to remember (and maybe you've discovered this
already), that Voice Over support for Pages is quite rudimentary. This is such
a shame and extremely disappointing. Maybe this will improve later this year.
There are workarounds for a number of things such as including headers in
documents, but they are long-winded and are sometimes hit and miss. You can
include headings, but the process is quite time-consuming. Once you've got the
headings you want though, you're good to go. Footnotes are another matter
though. However, as with my following suggestion, what you use depends on what
you want to do.
>
> I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion on a different word processor other

There are a number of free solutions, including one that I believe is called
"iText Express". If i remember correctly, this is a revamped version of
TextEdit with some features including footnotes that TextEdit itself cannot
create. If however you want an experience comparable to MS Word though, you
might consider either Nisus Writer Express or Nisus Writer Pro. Each can be
found in the App Store or on the developer's website at:

http://www.nisus.com

The support from the developer is excellent and both the Express and Pro
versions can handle the importing of Word files. I think the difference between
the two is that Express does not offer Tables of Contents and a few other
features that the developers deem useful only to professionals. They are
however quite expensive.

At the moment, neither of these products offer Voice Over support for tables.
They do however offer a 15-day free trial from the website.

Other people on this list use Nisus's word processing products and I'm sure
that if you decided to give them a try, we would all be happy to help you
overcome any difficulties you might encounter.

If i remember correctly, the default filetype for a Numbers spreadsheet (even

This seems to be an on-going bug. I'm not sure who to report it to, though
hopefully the 2013 version might address it? I think it is coming out in
September.

As a workaround, and I'm sure you've thought of this, you could run pdflatex on
the command line and send the output to a file on the Desktop to review any
possible errors. I know it's not very efficient, but it should stop TeXShop

Perhaps there are other TeX editors, but I've not found any that are

Hi all -

I've used a windows machine and a Mac to look at the home page of that site, to
compare how JAWS and VO see the content.

Firstly, JAWS appears to see much more, but this is not about ease of use, but
about finding how to listen with VO.

Vo does not see the Schedule link from either using the roter or the VO F [find
command], what I had to do was find the 4Extra link from the list of links, and
then below that was the program currently on air, and the next link, was just a
number, but by clicking that, with VO space, a page came up that had the
schedule link visible.

I have also tried following help Anne gave, by going to the 4Extra home page,
searching for the programme I want to listen to, and then looking for the
programme number to click to play, but again, this sometimes works, and other
times there is no listen link, or I can't get to the page that says: "play in
pop out player."

I've persevered with this, because it looks like it should work, if only I can
find the way, but it is hit and miss, and doesn't always produce results. So
far, I've not looked in to installed the Get Iplayer that has been discussed on
here, as I feel that is more about scheduling programmes for download, where as
I just want to go and grab the odd programme I'm interested in, but which I
missed when it was first broadcast.

So, that is where I'm up to. Happy to hear if anybody has helpful thoughts? -

Hi Dane,

Thank you, I'll give that a go. I didn't know that there was a Windows control
panel in iCloud. Using iCloud didn't occur to me.

Take care

Perhaps I'm looking at things from the wrong angle but you did say accessible
Contacts database did you not? If that's the case then why not use systems that
already are designed to cater for the storage and organisation of contacts.

For example, just use the Contacts App on your Mac, use the iCloud Windows
control panel to sync with Outlook or Address Book on your Windows machine and
perhaps then you'll have your cross platform accessible contacts database.

Creating an accessible and collaborative contact database

2013-06-24 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Evening all,

I need to create an accessible contacts database that is cross platform. As
Numbers and Excel are Spreadsheets, and Numbers is notoriously difficult to use
with VO — at least in my experience, they are probably not going to make the
grade. Also, my manager would like to get rid of this way of creating databases
in our team.

As the database needs to be accessible to users of Assistive Technology on
Windows, I was thinking of simply creating individual files for each category
and then using headings to make navigation straightforward for all concerned. I
was thinking of either an RTF or DOC file so taht others could add their own
entries.

Any thoughts would be very welcome.
Thank you

In my use of Tables there's been only 1 problem I've come up against, I

Re: aliases VS. copy

2013-06-13 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Just a note about the Desktop here, and this is my experience. This may no
longer be an issue for most people. For some reason (which I've not yet had
chance to look into) OS X does not like clutter on the desktop. The od folder
shouldn't pose a problem, though I would imagine that this depends on the size
of the folder and its contents. So in short, it might be an idea not to clutter
your Desktop with too many folders.

However, if you change your view to "Single Page Continuous" VO works fine with

Thanks Zack, I'll use Preview until such a time that Skim access is restored.

Hopefully, more work will be done on this in 10.9.

Skim seems to be able to handle larger PDFs and is more stable. It also works
well for presentations. I have to read a great deal for the work that I do and
Skim fulfills my requirements better than Preview. However, reading PDFs with

Hi Sarah and all,

Just curious here, but will the Recovery partition be able to do that? I
thought that because the partition resides on the same disk as the OS, Disk
utility is unable to scan everything. You might have better luck doing what
Sarah suggests from a bootable backup.

Good luck. and hope this helps. If not you might have to reinstall the os.

I don't know of any Command Line editors that will do what you want per say,
though there is always LaTex. Be aware though that it will take time to learn.
It is incredibly powerful and is considered by some, to be the gold standard
for any sort of writing. I am not sure how easy it is though to convert a LaTeX
file to RTF or DOC, as they are both proprietary formats. I believe that it is
possible, though at some cost to any special formatting or attributes such as
footnotes.

You could also look at John Gruber's Markdown or Fletcher Penny's
Multimarkdown. Both of these are designed for web publishing, without the need
to know HTML. The latter also has facility for footnotes. But again, converting
to RTF may be problematic and is not (as far as I remember) officially
supported.

Feel free to write me off-list if you'd like further information.

Hi Gordon,

It is possible to add headers and footers etc in Pages and Nisus Writer

the attributes change there is no way I know of for Voiceover to distinguish
headings from the main body text. It simply treats all text, Headings or

I don't use Preview as my default app for reading PDFs, so I don't know what
the default settings are. However, you have two ways (that I know of) for
reading your PDF.

1. With your PDF open, in the "View" menu you'll find an option called
"Continuous read". It will have the shortcut "Command+1. With this option
selected, you should be able to read your PDF quite happily.

Alternatively, if you want to read one page at a time, you can press
"Command+2" for "Single Page", which is also in the "View" menu. You can then

Re: Nisus writer pro

2013-04-28 Thread James AUSTIN
Hi Paula,

NWP is very accessible overall. I have used this app for years and have found
ways to accomplish pretty much everything VO. Unfortuantely, some things are
not curently accessible, including tables and VO's acknowledgement of Headings.

Feel free to write back if I can be of any more assistance and advice/tips.

An excellent suggestion by Travis. Another suggestion is to use OCR software

Re: anti virus and the mac

2013-03-17 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Hi Terry
To my knowledge there are no "viruses" for OS X in the wild. I use "virus" in
its traditional sense. That does not mean, I repeat "does not mean" that there
are not other threats. Most of which are Internet-based. Many of the
prevention methods involve vigilance by users. For threats such as tracking
cookies etc, you could try macScan.

Apple does have some in-built security for checking the validity of apps. It is
a dialogue that pops up, and there are one or two virus definitions in Apple's
viruses database.

The need for anti-virus is a divisive issue among the OS X community, and
although hi don't use any, I would suggest that if you want to use some then do
so. There does seem to be a great deal of complacency among OS X users.

Re: Tracking changes in Pages

An invaluable discovery, thank you :)

Hello everyone,

I've just worked out how to manage tracking changes in Pages. You need to use a
Braille display.

In the View menu, show the Comments and changes pane. This will display text
boxes containing the Accept and Reject buttons, plus the name of the person who
made the change and the date and time of the change, followed by the text that
has been changed. There is a text box for each change made on a given page.

Interacting with the page will tell you how many items are on that page, and if
there are more than 3, there's probably a change.

On your Braille display, you'll see the original text attached to the new text.
You can check which text has been changed as it has no text attributes.

I hope this makes sense!

Cheers,

Anne

Re: need pages help

Hi Laurel

One of the many shortcomings of VoiceOver in this app unfortunately. When I've
had this problem in the past, I have interacted with the "body", rooted the

This has always fixed the problem for me if I remember correctly.

Re: ML 10.8 update problem

2013-03-15 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
There isn't, occasionally, Mail will ask to be updated but you just need to
click continue and this takes a few seconds.

It is often worth running a Disk Repair and/or a Permissions repair before and
after an update as sometimes, things can get a little messy.

This is from memory, so i hope the steps are accurate. but to do this:

1. Restart your Mac - make sure you don't have any external drives connected.
2. Press and hold option are as you hear the "bong" sound.
3. Navigate once to the right with the arrow keys and press enter.
4. This will launch the recovery partition
5. After this has launched - maybe a few minutes, start VoiceOver - you might
need to hold down the FN key if you have a Macbook model.
6. You should find the option to Repair Permissions etc in the dialogue that
appears on-screen

Hope this helps

Hi Brian
That's a novel use of E-Mail. Out of interest though, have you looked at Drafts?

It is a app with no need to ave and no folder structure. When you open the app
you are placed in a text area and you can type away to your heart's content.
You can exit the app and your draft will be saved for searching later. It has a
wealth of sharing options including E-Mail.

This would be a demanding but important project if you can pull it off.

If you are to do this I think you should concentrate on where the current

There is no use spending time going over basics that others have already
done though you could reference for example the vision Australia podcasts in
whatever you produce so people could consult them if needed.

I would suggest a number of real world projects as walk throughs.

So for example

. using Pages to produce an Academic Report.

This would not need to include basics like formatting selected text but
would perhaps cover.

1 Choosing an appropriate template.
2. Customising Formatting of Margins as necessary.
3. Developing Header Styles.
4. Page numbering and formatting of page numbering styles.
5. Header and footer insertions and navigating to Header and footer to read
information with VO.
5.b. Footnote insertion and footnote reading.
6. Strategies for coping with VO and Mac awkwardness with Tables.
7. Spell checking effectively.
8. using a dictionary with college work.
9. using a thesaurus with college projects.
10. Doing grammar checks.
11. Any strategies you could think of to replicate Text analyser function in
Windows Screenreaders which identify proofing anomalies.
12. general proof reading tips - for example doing global find and replace
of double spaces, replace all space full stop with full stops etc so work
looks Ok for sighted reader.
13. using the word Count in document Inspector.
14. familiarisation with Document Inspector generally.
15. having a "save as" capacity with duplicate file creation.
16. table of Content creation. I am not sure if Pages can automate this in
the same way as Microsoft Word but I hope that it can.
17. Automated Index creation, I am again not sure if Pages can do this , if
not then perhaps investigate what program can do these things.
18. Managing hyperlinks for referencing purposes in documents.
19. Listing keyboard shortcuts for things like force new page.
20 . Adjusting line spacing, hopefully fine adjustment. I have to produce
work in for example, 1.15 line spacing, that is just over single but below
1.5 line spacing.
21 . Inserting diagrams / flow charts/ organisation charts. This can be done
accessibly with Word and Project working on the Windows platform. What is
the accessible Mac Equivalent?
22. controlling Printing - print in reverse order, print collated documents
etc.

There are probably loads more things but this would perhaps get you started
on Pages.
A similar list could be created for Numbers.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you on list who have

Hi Josh,

Pages is a wonderful application, though there are some serious limitations to
what can be achieved with VoiceOver. At present, VO cannot see lists, footnotes
or tables. It cannot also see headings in a document. It treats any heading as
a piece of text.

Creating Getting started Guides was Re: iWork programs and accessibility

2013-03-06 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Hi David,

You're absolutely right. I have often thought of doing something and have
started several times. However, working full-time makes this sort of thing very
difficult. It needs a collaborative effort. Moreover, it does not seem that
Apple are making progress in the iWork area as we have not seen a significant
update for it in nearly 4 years. Also, there are just some things that
VoiceOver cannot do in Pages at the moment, such as lists and footnotes and of
course, tables.

I would be very happy to try to write something along the "Getting Started…"
lines but as i say it would have to be a collaborative effort I think.

What do people think?

On 6 Mar 2013, at 13:25, David Griffith wrote:

There is a desperate need for structured work to be done on building up

There should be getting Started guides to pages, Numbers, Key Note etc.
These could then be usefully supported with audio tutorials giving walk
through of essential tasks.

All the current guides I have seen assume you have sight.
At the moment the visually impaired user base Resources on Mac seems more
concentrated on advanced Music/ creative products rather than serious
advanced Office Productivity. Basic word processing is fine but as you are
finding moving beyond this to spreadsheets and more advance usage is a
massive learning curve. I have had the identical problems that you are
experiencing.
Ideally it would be useful for Apple to produce more than chapter 7 of the
Voiceover guide on applications.
Alternatively organisation like the RNIB should be doing more to increase
the expertise in utilising or work arounding the issue to enhance Mac
productivity for visually impaired users.
This has happened in the USA where Visual Impairment charities produced
Getting Started with the iPhone but there is a yawning chasm of a gap in the
market where there is zilch support for Visually impaired users using the
Mac.
I guess this is chicken and egg. The Mac users of office productivity is
small compared to the iPhone. This is likely to continue whilst the
organisations do not support Mac access solutions.
Listening to the interview on Blind Bargains recently it appears that
organisation like the RNIB are focussing on Windows and NVDA for investment
in Access for their user base. This is understandable but I wish they
widened their horizons beyond Windows.

We need proper in depth guides to intermediate / advanced use of Mac
Productivity . I think this is quite tough to expect visually Impaired
people to pull themselves all up individually by their bootstraps.
There needs to be a proper structured project which builds tutorials on a
number of tasks using Iworks, probably initially investigated with sighted
assistance until procedures to complete tasks without sighted help are
formulated.

hi,

I have both pages and numbers.
I have been disappointed with numbers because several of the shortcut keys
have not worked for me. for example, I had some XLS files that numbers
opened up fine, and I could read the first sheet of data, but the command to
move from sheet to sheet has not worked for me.there were other shortcut
keys in the help file that also would not work for me.
I found pages to be very complex too learn, but this could simply be due to
the fact that I am a new Mac user. I also constantly received "busy"
messages from both aps, but now that I just got more memory installed,
perhaps this will no longer happen. must check into that.

my two cents.

When you removed the Anti-Virus app from your Applications folder, did you also

You could also try simply going into System Preferences into your Login Items

You're right, in SUM, VO does not load. I woner if there would be a way of
installing SpeakUP or some other flavour of a Linux/UNIX Screen Reader given
that OS X is built on and is UNIX compliant. But I think that might be outside
of the scope of this list.

KEXTs, launch agents, launch daemons, startup items, fonts, any user login
items, or any user-specific launch agents.
When you are in Save Mode, nothing but the bare essentials load. This is done
for specific troubleshooting and you can't turn on any services through Safe
Mode. You probably can in Single User mode, but this is a terminal line only
interface, and,a again, I don't believe VO loads.

Re: safe mode and voiceover

2013-02-27 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Hi Will,

I think I read somewhere that although sound drivers are not loaded in safe
mode, a Braille Display should work with VO. I could have imagined reading this
though.

Also, I am not sure if your problems are due exclusively to the fact that you
have an SSD? I would think that there are plenty of folks who have an SSD drive
in their Macs running something other than OS X. If this is exclusively an SSD
issue though hopefully it will get sorted.

Out of interest, have you tried booting into a bootable back up of OS X and
then tried partitioning your drive with an MS DOS partition?

how are you trying to do it? Under which OS?

If you could provide us with a little more information, we might be more able

When you download an app for the Mac, 99 times out of 100, you will download a
Disk Image (.DMG) file. You can think of this file as a .zip file if you like.
As you have noticed, simply placing this file into your "Applications" folder
doesn't result in you being able to use the app. You first need to open the
image file.

The default location for downloads on the Mac is conveniently "Downloads". So
if you are in the Finder, which incidentally is running constantly, press
Command+Option+L to open the "Downloads" folder. Once you've found the .DMG
file, press either Command+O or Command+Down Arrow to open it. You'll be
presented with a Finder window and in there you'll find your app, any
supporting files and a shortcut to your "Applications" folder. Simply copy the
app Command+C to your "Applications" folder (Command+Shift+A and paste it there
with Command+V.

You can then use the app to your heart's content, but you will also want to
"eject" the image. When you opened it originally, the DMG acted like a
mountable disk, placing an icon containing the app on the Desktop. To get to
the Desktop quickly from within the Finder, press Command+Shift+D. To eject the
Disk Image, press Command+E on the image. After a few seconds, the image
should no longer be on the Desktop. You can then happily delete it from your
"Downloads" folder with Command+Backspace, exiling it to the Trash.

Hope this helps and feel free to write if I can be of any further assistance.
That goes for the list too, we're all here to help.
Take care

Firstly, make sure that you've selected your document with Command+A, or the

The key to Pages is not the menus. It is the "Inspector".

1. Command+Option+I to launch the inspector.
2. Navigate to the "Text" tab and press VO+Space
3. The "Text" option should be selected by default, but if not you'll find it
next to the "lists" option. VO+Space to select it.
4. You'll find a slider labelled "Line Spacing" in this window. If you VO right
from here, you'll eventually find an option that says "Single Line Spacing.
There is a pop-up menu here. When you open this with VO+Space, you an choose
"Double-space" from the available options.
5. Close the inspector and your document should now be double-spaced.

Final question, how can I make VO read the type of letter (arian, times, etc)
that I am using?
Make sure that you are interacting with the document, VO+Shift+space. You an
then press VO+T to hear the font your document is written in.

Hope this helps

Re: Word processing software

2013-02-02 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Hi Sarah,

Are you a Braillist?

In my experience, Braille is the best way to get a handle on this sort of
thing. As has probably been said here, different citation styles require very
different things. Parenthetical citation versus footnotes for example. (I hate
the former personally) Even within particular departments, different lecturers
sometimes like slightly different twists on their preferred citation method.
I'm sure you've done this, but why not ask your particular lecturers for an
example of each type of citation that they want. That way, when you hand your
paper in, they should mark you down if you have followed their examples.

I have not yet tried creating a template, but yes, i believe that you can
create just about any sort of template you want.

Take care

Re: Word processing software

2013-02-02 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Hi everyone,

As has been said already, Pages has the potential to be a fabulous app and for
plain writing it is. By "plain" writing, I mean where you don't need to add
footnotes, lists and the like. While you can add them, VoiceOver doesn't
recognise them as such and will not let you know that they are there. If for
instance you insert a bulleted list, the entire list will just be treated as
normal text. On the other hand, running headers are certainly possible and work
really well. They are a little fiddly to get set up though if memory serves.

I don't know if other users will agree with me, but I think the key to learning
Pages is learning that "the Inspector" (Command+Option+I) is your friend. It
allows you to have fine-grained control over the document. As i and others have
said though, the short-comings are with VoiceOver, not Pages.

As Lynne said, Nisus Writer Pro is your friend and is also an extremely good
product. We use both here. There are some accessibility issues with NWP, which
I can talk about if anyone is interested, but 99% of the app is fully
accessible with VoiceOver.

Take care
James

Re: Reading title of window?

2013-01-21 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Good morning Catherine,

As you navigate with Command+Tab, VoiceOver will tel you which application you
are moving to, as I'm sure you know. To read the title of a window, press
VO+F2. Pressing this twice quickly will bring up a list of open windows. To
know what the current application is and how many are running press VO+F1.
Pressing this twice quickly, will bring up a list of applications that you can
then navigate with the arrow keys much like the list that appears with the
above VO+F2 Command, when it is pressed twice quicly.

You'll find both of these commands in the VoiceOver Commands menu which is
VO+h+h.

I hope this helps

There's a finance app called Chronicle. You can get it from:

I'm not sure if this is what you're after, but it might be worth a look. If i
remember correctly, it ws quite accessible when we last looked at it.

VoiceOver memory usage query

Hi folks,

I haven't done any research on this yet, but I'm curious. On this 2009 MacBook
(though I'm sure the hardware is older), VoiceOver is currently using 134+ MB.
Baring in mind that I only have 2GB of RAM in this machine, is this normal?

For those of you who are curious, you can find out by launching Activity
Monitor. The "Real Memory" column is the last one on the right of the table.

Thanks for feeding my curiosity

Re: Two Questions about Pages

2012-12-31 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Hi Chris,

Pages is a brilliant app isn't it?

1. In Pages, how do I format a line of text as a heading level 1, 2, 3, etc.

This is a little keyboard-intensive, but the steps to do this are as follows:

1. Once you've got your text, press Command+Shift+T. This opens the styles
drawer.
2. Press VO+Shift+up arrow until you hear "stop interacting with scroll area"
3. Navigate with VO+left arrow once until you hear "drawer. Interact with the
drawer with VO+Shift+Down Arrow
4. Navigate down with VO until you hear "paragraph styles". Interact with
this.
5. You can then use VO+Down Arrow until you come to "Heading 1"
6. Root the mouse pointer to this with VO+Command+F5.
7. Press VO+Space and go down the menu to "Hot key".
8. You can then select one of the "f" keys as your shortcut for the heading.
9. Once you've navigated back to and interacted with the "body" of the
document, find the text you want to make a heading level 1 and press F1.

2. I have a list of items which I put one item per line. Now, I want to
select that whole chunk of text, which I've done, but now, what do I need to do
in order to make that into a bulleted list?

Here you go:
1. Bring up the Inspector with Command+Option+I.
2. Navigate to the "Text" tab and activate it with VO+Space.
3. Then navigate to the "list" option and activate this.
4. You'll find a pop-up menu here for bulleted lists. Select the one you want
and you're god to go.

Bare in mind though, that VO will not recognise that the text is in a list. One
of Apple's missed and necessary accessibility improvements for Pages.

Feel free to contact me if I can help further. My Skype is saulky1984, but
please let me know who you are if you'd like to talk with me.
Take care
James

yes, Amadeus Pro can do this. If I've understood your question correctly, you
want to save multiple files without having to save each independently. Is
that right? You can do this by setting markers, which you can name. Then, once
you've finished your recording, there is an option to "split" the file
according to the markers. This will result in several files, named according to
the markers you've set.

I may be wrong here, so please feel free to correct me, but I think that this

italicised finishings to certain letters, also called Serifs. When i spoke to
an Apple Accessibility team member about this, they explained what they were,

Dónal, if you'd like to write me off-list, I might be able to help you avoid
them in your LaTeX-created PDFs. For everyone else, if you're creating PDFs
yourselves, either from Pages or another word processor, try using fonts
without Serifs, such as Arial or Times. There are others, and you can find

Re: Hearing Apple Menu when typing in ML or Lion.

2012-10-31 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Hi everyone

Nor can I, although I have experienced the first of these problems. At the
time, I don't think i brushed the Mousepad, though I cannot be sure. This is
certainly a bizarre bug. You might want to check the Console
(/Applications/Utilities) the next time this happens and see if anything
untoward turns up there.

Hi Melissa,

If you choose to use SArchiver, under the "Misc" options in Preferences,
you'll find a checkbox called "Move archive to Trash after openeing".

That should solve your problem

You might also want to check the Application Support folder and your
Preferences folder, which you'll find in your Library folder.

If your own Library folder is hidden, which is the default setting since Lion,
then do the following;

1. In the Finder, press Command+Shift+G. This will bring up the "Go To"
dialogue.
2. Type the following, without the quotes" "~/Library/ There is a slash in this
quoted text., so you might just want to copy the quoted text.
3. You'll find the Application Support and Preferences folders here.
4. Within the Preferences folder, you're looking for a file called something
like: "com.google.chrome.plist" There may be a few of these files. You can
delete them and then empty your trash. This should alleviate your problem.

Hi,
Ok, in a moment of weakness, I stupidly downloaded google chrome and installed
it on my mac. Now, I want to uninstall it completely off my system as there
are things I don't like about it after all. I already went to my applications
folder and binned the app, but for some reason, my mac still thinks it's
residing someplace on the system and tries to open links in it every time I
click on a link from mail. What's more, if I do click on a link from within
mail, it actually *does* open chrome. Now, I don't know where it's finding
this thing, since I uninstalled it from the apps folder and then emptied my
trash and restarted my system!

Is there some hidden place I can purge some dastardly files from, please?

Thanks!

Caitlyn

Sure. When you go to the dock and are on the folder you want to open, first
press Command+Shift+M. You can then navigate the list until you hear "list".
Press Enter on this. You'll have to go back to the Dock, and do this for the

the Dock, you will be able to see their contents.

Hope this helps

Re: Can VO speak page numbers while reading a pages document?

2012-07-12 Thread James AUSTIN
Hi TJ

As you read down your document, VO will announce the number of the current
page. You can also create a table of contents, which I'll come to in a moment.
However, the current level of access in Pages with VO, does not, as you've
noticed, extend too far. Hopefully, this will change with the imminent release
of Mountain Lion.

To create a Table of Contents, you first need to turn your section/chapter
titles into headings.

1. Press Command+Shift+T to show the Styles Drawer.
2. Stop interacting with your document and use VO+Left arrow until you find the
Styles Drawer
3. Interact with the Paragraph Styles Table
4. Use VO+Down Arrow until you find Heading
5. Press VO+Space if you want to use this Heading. (Below this one are other
heading levels)
6. Navigate to Shortcut Key which as a submenu. Here you can choose from the
available F keys.
7. Once you've set your headings, stop interacting and navigating back to your
document.
8. Once you've found the appropriate chapter and heading titles, simply press
the relevant F key.
9. Create a blank page for your Table of Contents
10. Press Command+Option+I to bring up the Inspector.
11. Select the Document Radio Button Then select the TOC tab
12. You need to select the the various heading levels in the table. This should
then create your TOC.

Hope this helps
James
