Mine dies whenever I command tab really quickly between tons of windows, or move quickly through the finder or something like that. It's very strange and annoying. Re: Adobe at CSUN -- Did anybody talk to them?
I went to the HTML5 v. Flash presentation today. IMHO there was tap dancing going on in the presentation. In the list of "Cons" about Flash they listed Mac accessibility but the speaker said they were activly working on it and were adding support for open standards-based accessibility APIs like IAccessible. Sooo, how will that help with voiceover? They seem to have some nice object to accessibility API mappings going on for Windows but are tenacious about not implementing for Apple's APIs. I'm sure the general friction with Apple over flash on iPhone isn't helping things either. BTW, WebAIM screen reader survey found VO usage on non-iOS devices over the last three surveys has gone from 6% in January 09 to 20% in December 2010 in the "commonly used" category. Still only 10% in the "primary" category (up 1%) as compared to Jaws at 59% (down 6%). For those of you wondering, yes I'm still lurking. Just not as much time to respond these days. Finally got Boot Camp going, but now more trouble
Hi there. After taking my 13-inch Macbook to a little shop a friend of dad knew of, they finally got Boot Camp and XP going on this somewhat older white Macbook. One of the major problems, well, the only thing I've noticed so far is that no matter how I reconfigure my router, the wifi either times out connecting or says that I might be out of range. If I'm across the room from the thing, it better not be out of range because if I hit connect on other ones I have no clue who owns them, those will ask me for the password. The strange thing is that my own wifi works fine booting up from Snow Leopard, but not XP. I tried lowering security all the way down to WEP as believe it or not, all the other routers according to the network table in the airport thingy say WEP in them, how aweful from a security standpoint but I don't know who owns any of them to get into temporarily to download some updates and see if that solves this. At the place I live at, doubt anyone would know their SSID because they're all non-descript, some 2-wire and numbers, one real long and random one and a cellular-connected one through a local provider, so wouldn't know who to ask permission from if they knew the default keys. With mine, there's 5 in total I can see from here, but the one that refuses to ask for a key has to be mine. I have Charter for Internet, and my modem is a SMCD3GN Docsis 3 Wireless gateway, all the latest and greatest from what I can tell, even with gigabit hardwired ports. How do I force this thing to take on the XP install on my Macbook? I really have to wonder if these modems do Mac address registration and OS analysis. It lets MacOSX on without a hitch, but when I reboot to XP it says I'm out of range almost immediately or it sits there as long as you can wait like a firewall would respond if it's decided the answer is no. Is there a way I can reset what my gateway thinks about the Mac address for the laptop so that it will allow the XP side on? I wonder then if it will forbid OSX? I don't even know if that shop downloaded that 300 mb update there is to the Boot Camp drivers, at least there was when I installed those into a demo of fusion. Is there a way to download them with a PC and install via USB stick since I can't find an open network? If not, what kind of 2Wire Docsis 3 modem can I buy myself to replace this thing, figuring if I have my own, this silly detection won't be there? I suppose if I convinced Charter to send another one, I have to be careful to connect wirelessly with the windows side first and see if it then locks Mac out, but I'd rather not go through that mess. Re: hot spot expiry?
The hot spots are automatically saved, until you either replace them or get rid of them. Unfortunately, you can only have up to 10 hot spots, from numbers 1 through 0. That's Apple's design. The hot spots are only active if the program associated with them is open because it's a quick way of returning to an area of the program, or a quick way of monitoring something within a program, such as a progress indicator. Remember, you can press vo-hot spot number twice to bring up your hot spot chooser menu to see which ones you haven't used in a while. Re: hot spot expiry?
Hi Yuma, Perhaps you can clarify your requirement? The way I've used hotspots, closing the associated app renders them inapplicable. When I reopen the app my hotspot again becomes active. Only way I know to save them is via the "export preferences" menu item in the voiceOver utility. Perhaps you could get beyond the limit of ten by saving several hotspot files and automating which file becomes loaded via scripting? Perhaps others will chime in with a better idea. Best regards. Re: organizing bookmarks
Hi Matthew, Collections refer to special categories of items under the Bookmarks menu, such as "History", the "Bookmarks Bar" (i.e. the most frequently used bookmark entries that appear on the browser page when the Bookmarks Bar is not hidden), the "Bookmarks Menu" (usually, the list of bookmarks not on your Bookmarks Bar), the "Address Book" (for URLs of contacts in your Address Book), "RSS Feeds", if you choose to subscribe to them and have them displayed in Safari. So the table of "Collections" in the "Show All Bookmarks" page of Safari displays these items as well as folders of bookmarks. When you use the "Create new Collection" button you create a folder under the table listing both the categories I listed, and folders of Bookmarks. If you select a category under the table of bookmark collections (whether "History" or a particular bookmarks folder), then stop interacting with the table and navigate to the table of items under that selected collection (e.g. with Command-Shift-T to move to the next table) you can see both individual bookmarks and (sub)folders of bookmarks. The "Create new Collection" button creates a new folder of bookmarks under the Table of Collections. The "Create new Folder" button creates a new folder within the collections you have selected in the Table of Collections -- this could be a sub-folder of a bookmarks folder, or a folder on your Bookmarks Bar, for example. Also, to answer Laura's original question about reordering bookmarks, I find this easiest to do using Safari on the iPad (or iPhone), where after double-tapping the "Bookmarks" button, I can double tap the "Edit" button. either on the top level, where the items are folders, or after selecting a collection like the "Bookmarks Bar" or "Bookmarks Menu". For folders or bookmarks in my synced bookmarks this brings us a "delete" button beside the listed entry on the left side of the screen and a "Reorder . draggable" button on the right side of the screen for the listed folder. Doing a double tap and hold pass through gesture on this button lets me rearrange the order by drag and drop, and produces the burbling noise that the gesture was recognized. As I move my finger up or down the right side of the iPhone screen, I'll hear a "clink" and an announcement like "moved above" (or "moved below"), (and then the name of the bookmark or folder that I just move past in the up or down direction). To check the ordering of the items, just move your finger down the center of the iPhone screen, and scroll (three finger flick up) when you reach the bottom to keep going. Or, you could just flick right or do a "read all" from the current point (two finger flick down), but you'll also hear the delete buttons at the left and the move buttons at the right also listed, in addition to the name of the bookmark. When things are ordered to your satisfaction, double tap the "Done button". I think these will sync back to your Safari bookmarks on the Mac -- at least, this does through MobileMe, and I believe this also works when you sync through connecting your iPhone to iTunes if you have the box for syncing bookmarks checked. Amadeus Pro and switching between tracks
Hello! I have recently tried to find a workaround for the following: I have two tracks in a project and I want to edit one of them. The only way to do this from the keyboard is to press the letter n as in next to switch to the next track. I read on the maccessibility-website that there should be a way to select a specific track with voiceover. But I can't get this method to work. Have any of you any suggestions of an alternativ way to get around selecting tracks? Re: MobileMe Renewal Hell
Hi, I answered Chris's post on the mac-access list, but the quick summary is that if you buy the box sets for 1 year of MobileMe service, either in a store or on-line through Amazon, or another vendor, you can scan and OCR the 16 character activation code that is stickered onto either the enclosed card or booklet. I have my MobileMe account set with the box checked not to automatically renew. Then, when it's close to the time for renewal, I just buy the box set (usually around $70 from Amazon, but prices have gone as low as $52), and go to the MobileMe activation page: https://secure.me.com/wo/WebObjects/Signup.woa/wa/activation Paste the activation code into the text box and change the selection from the first option of setting up a new account to the second option of "Apply to an existing account. Renew your subscription or convert your trial or family member sub account to a full subscription" by navigating to it and doing a VO-Space, then proceed to the continue button (labeled "btn_continue.png"), press it (VO-Space), and give the log in for your MobileMe account for the renewal to be applied to. You'll be able to check the new expiration date for your account. Although Apple has recently stopped selling the MobileMe box sets in their stores, you can still find these for sale on line and through other vendors. Also, it doesn't matter if the box is labeled "old version" at Amazon -- those codes will still work. The only thing is that you can't apply this way in advance of your renewal (e.g. stockpile 3 years worth and apply them all in advance); this is only effective for the period just before your renewal is due (maybe a few weeks or a month?). So I thought ok let's wrestle with the pretty much inaccessible mobileme website. Anyway with a bit of playing around I managed to get to the appropriate page to amend my payment details and just as I arrived at the end of the form I was hit with a screen capture. Yes Apple has one! And no, there was no audio alternative. As there was no one sighted nearby I thought hmmm I will just have to call Apple. Eventually technical support guy on the other side of the chat window came back and said he was unable to accept any payment details over the chat window. So as you can see it was a waste of time and mobileme do not appear to have a telephone either. So apart from getting a real person in the flesh with eyes that work to help you update the inaccessible website, I can't see how a blind user is going to complete this process themselves. Re: MobileMe Renewal Hell
When I set this thing up I had sight, and had no idea I would need to worry about accessibility. Put it this way, I find the main facebook website more accessible! But when you have it working with Apple Mail, iCal, Address Book etc across a number of Macs sharing the account and also my iPhone etc, it works very well. I love push email and syncing etc and don't think there is much out there that can beat it. But the mobileme website is awful but it is better on the Mac then Windows for accessibility. If I was you, I would maybe consider google for now. Hey all, I have an imac g3 (slot-loader, 600 MHZ...). I'm looking for the mac OS9.2.2 restore disks... probably a long-shot, but if anybody has them or a disk image they're willing to send, I'd be really grateful! MobileMe Renewal Hell
Hi gang, Do any of you have mobileme accounts? Have any of you had to renew your mobile me account and update your credit card details after your current card expires? I have just received an email from Mobileme informing me that my subscription is due for renewal and that I need to update my card details or my account and its contents will be deleted. I rang Apple and had an argument with their automated voice recognition system and eventually got put through to a real person, who then had to put me through to another real person, who then had to put me through to a different real person. The final real person could not really help me but offered to log onto the mobile me website and clicked on the mobileme chat technical support link. So I am passing details down the phone and this guy is then typing them into a chat window and the 3 of us are going back and forth. Great service Apple, and I hope Lion makes mobileme more accessible or I will take my business elsewhere. Re: Keynote Question
Hello Ezzy, You can subscribe to the VoiceOver On podcast through iTunes. Just enter VoiceOver On in the search field and it should be the second result after VoiceOver Getting Started.
