Re: Another Update About Infovox Demo Voices

2012-11-08 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi Cheryl,

I haven't experienced this myself, but I think I may understand what they mean.
Basically, reading any app with Voiceover is fine. The problem must be when
other apps try to speak using the system voice. Visiovoice was just their
example of the kind of app they were warning against. Some other examples would
be the speech output for Growl, or setting up certain apps like adium,
Messages/iChat, or Skype to automatically speak events. Another example is apps
that are self-voicing such as the RS Games client. Also, If you configure the
Mac in system preferences to automatically speak the time or to speak alerts
after a delay. Basically, anything else that tries to use the voice on it's own
while voiceover is running will apparently cause that problem with the demo.

I hope this explanation makes sense.

Hi there
The Apple corps of Dallas which is at acd.us has a Mac helpdesk. I'm not sure
about a list, but they do have a way for people to submit problems for answers

Re: Another Update About Infovox Demo Voices

2012-11-08 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I wasn't running any of those. Plus it would be ridiculous to bother with a
demo if you have to be that careful. Their demos in the past haven't done this
and their demos in the past didn't require an Internet connection. Also, they
say that this doesn't happen with the voices once they are purchased. If I
understood correctly, the demos used to be exactlyu the same as the regular
functioning of the voices except for the fact that they quit after thirty days;
I don't understand why they should be now working any differently than if you
had purchased the voice. The purpose in a thirty-day demo should be to make
sure the voice really works with your system.

We've traced back the problem with the demo voices. It happens to occur
when two different application use the same voice in demo mode. For
example Voice Over and another application.

We're investigating the problem and will try to come up with a solution.

This design in which a tiny area is to be flicked at to advance the app list
isn't a realistic access methodology. The structure of the App Store prior
to IOS 6 worked fine, as did the IBooks store. Since the change, My perusal
and purchase of both apps and IBooks has dropped off sharply. This isn't
because I don't prefer to look around and to purchase, it's because the
access has become so chancy and difficult.

Whoever is advising the Apple creative teams on blindness disability may
deserve a second hard look. This is because when Apple opened its
accessibility window for blind users, it completely derailed some entrenched
and very expensive blindness products and made the major Windows screen
readers look clumsy and badly designed.

You don't suppose those blindness bastions are going to take that lying
down? What if bad advice in the name of experienced accesibility could be
given to Apple to weaken or limit the scope and reach of Apple's new access?
What if the voices and speech could be skewed toward the silly season
variety, as in that fake Ease Indin accent that allows the perfectly good
Australian voice to mispronounce standard words. Some of us blind users
depend on the pronounciation to know how a word is spelled. Some
mispronounced words when spoken in that fake Ease Indian accent, sound
exactly like other real words.

So, with a few suggestions that get accepted, and with a few more that
well, really guys, the totally blind can't be expected to really handle
much, can they, the whole beautifully positive Apple access platform tilts
toward the glitchy, falty Windows variety.

It is a good idea to call and have a trouble ticket created. How did that

So, let's not give up our newly won freedom with these Apple devices and

By the way, I'm totally blind and totally able to use the Apple devices, as

I'm not sure what is being complained abouthere. The "tiny" area on
the screen to flick up or down is no problem to find if one is willing
t think for one minute or at least take some advice if not of how to
get to it. Tough the bottom left icon, the bottom left tab on the
screen and do one flick left. There, you are on it. Honestly this
complaint does not sound the least bit constructive. Apple provided
accessibility to flick through the apps, and yes, it was a solution
that appears to have been an after thought, but at least they did
provide it and provided it quickly. It is absolutely perfectly usable
and is no harder to use, just different, than before. It is absolutely
frustrating when people get on a kick that just because it is
different that it is all wrong.

musical typing i Garageband?

Hi all,
I've turned on musical typing in Garageband, but nothing happens when I press

What am i missing to get this working right? Thanks.

Re: Jaws 14 on VMWare.

2012-11-08 Thread Chris Blouch
Same here. I ran the Jaws installer a second time and did the repair
option but no such luck. I guess the positive bit is that I had the same
problem on a real Windows 7 32-bit box so the virtual machine is
emulating that bug correctly :) I had Jaws 13 installed which I
uninstalled on VMWare before installing 14. On the real desktop I even
tried downloading the videointercept driver installer and running that
as administrator, but that didn't work either. From what I can find in
the forums others are also having issues with Jaws 14 and VMWare but I
don't think it's just VMWare that's having issues.

I'm sorry for asking this on list but I'm not sure who else to ask.

I installed jaws 14 on my VMWare machine and it said that the mirror display
driver had not been installed properly and that I either restart the computer
or repair the instalation of jaws.

I did restart the virtual machine a couple of times but the message was still
there. In the end I removed it as I couldn't find the jaws repair instalation.
Does anyone know if it has gone or else to look please?

well. i'm guessing it wasn't only me who had the problem, and gladly it wasn't
the vm either:).
switching to jaws 13 again it is then.

Accessible Audio Editing Software for Mac OS10

2012-11-08 Thread Daniel C
Good day list,
I do podcasting, and normally use Windows to edit my podcasts. Since, however,
my Windows machine is dying, I'm thinking of switching my production work over
to my Mac.
Since this is my first Mac, I'm not sure what software I should use for audio
editing. My gf told me about Amadeus, but I don't know how good it is or
anything as no demo is available to try it.
Would Amadeus be something that'll work with voiceover? And if so how
accessible is it?

Re: Accessible Audio Editing Software for Mac OS10

2012-11-08 Thread Mike M
Hello,
I use it for all of the editing I do for my podcast at htb2.com.
It works very well and is really simple to use.
garage Band wil also work but Amadeus Pro is much easier.
If you want I can send you a little recording of how it works.

Re: Accessible Audio Editing Software for Mac OS10

2012-11-08 Thread Chris
Get Audio Hijack Pro so you can capture your voice and or other sounds
produced by the system, including VoiceOver. Also get Fission which
allows you to edit your recordings made by Audio Hijack Pro.

www.rogueamoeba.com
Demos for these products are available. With Audio Hijack Pro noise is
added to all hijackings longer than 10 minutes. With Fission saving a
file will produce degraded audio with a series of fades.

As for Amadeus a demo is available but cannot remember the website off hand.

be when other apps try to speak using the system voice. Visiovoice was
just their example of the kind of app they were warning against. Some
other examples would be the speech output for Growl, or setting up certain
apps like adium, Messages/iChat, or Skype to automatically speak events.
Another example is apps that are self-voicing such as the RS Games client.
Also, If you configure the Mac in system preferences to automatically
speak the time or to speak alerts after a delay. Basically, anything else
that tries to use the voice on it's own while voiceover is running will
apparently cause that problem with the demo.

I hope this explanation makes sense.

Re: without passing through router?

2012-11-08 Thread Chris Blouch
I've had pretty good luck with time machine over wifi. I have an old Mac
G4 running in the basement with a 500GB drive for time machine backups
wired to my wifi router. I then have sharing turned on and mounted that
drive on a laptop and told time machine to use it. It seems to back up a
lot of the time since I'm back on 802.11G since my Airport died. It was
much more reasonable with 802.11N. In other words, if you're patient you
might be fine just doing time machine backups over wifi and will have no
need of a frankencable setup.

Hi,

You are correct in most accounts. Time Machine will continue from
where it left off if all things are equal, meaning that you're using
the same Backup location and configuration as well as connection
method. Yes it should be much quicker on future backups.

With respect to the Internet connection being lost when the ethernet
cable is connected. Try going to the System Prefs, in the Network
pane. In the Actions pop-up menu, choose "Set Service Order" and then
drag the WIFI above the Ethernet service. This should allow the WIFI
to maintain its Internet connection but still allow connectivity
between computers with the ethernet cable. Note that "should" is my
favourite word in computer-land so I'm not promising that it will work
perfectly. I do, in my world, use multiple network services but these
are usually in a Server environment so your machine may behave
differently.

Good luck.

Also, I am just thinking letting timemachine do its thing although it

Hi,

Migration Assistant is a different kettle of fish. Although, the
basic answer is yes, sort of. Some complications will arise though
if you are planning to have the units tethered more or less
permanently. Normally, the ethernet connection is a higher priority
than the wireless one thus once the connection is made, you will
lose your IP address and most likely lose your Internet connection.
There are workarounds for this sort of thing but they are not
typically VO friendly.

The connection speed should be quicker than WIFI and depending on
your router, could be slightly quicker then going through it as well.

The problem I see with your design though is that, unless your other
Mac is set up as a server, using it for Time Machine backups is not
as easy as it appears. My suggestions for this would be to either
have some sort of network access storage either through your
existing router (if it supports it), to use a Time Capsule or
Airport Extreme with external HD, or convert your other Mac to a
MacOS Server. Financially, if your router supports NAS, that's the
least expensive route, purchasing the MacOS Server is only $20 and
the most expensive would be the Airport Extreme or Time Capsule
route. Just because life is never easy, the less expensive routes
are not necessarily the easiest methods to configure.

Sorry, probably just gave you more questions than answers.

Hi,

If it is indeed possible, how do I make sure the connection works

Re: Anyone have Terminal tricks and resources?

2012-11-08 Thread Esther
Hi Mike,

As Chris and Brandon mentioned, there's a lot of answers for specific topics
about using the terminal. There isn't a lot posted about the best ways to set
up VoiceOver for using Terminal. The best and most extensive posts I've seen
on that topic have come from Travis Siegel on the mac-access list. Here's the
link to an earlier mail archive post I made here that contains a link to one of
Travis' mac-access list posts on "Hints on using terminal". (This dates from
before the mac-access list moved over to using the Mail Archive as a secondary
archive that is easily searchable).
• Re: terminal and voice over
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg45511.html
You're welcome to join that list, too. Here's the info page:
http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/mac-access/

I think this is the current web page with more information about their current
mailing lists and list policies. Note that discussion of Windows related
topics have been split off to a separate Windows-access list.
http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/Mailing-Lists.html

Cheryl's suggestion of the "Take Control of the Mac Command Line with Terminal"
eBook is also a good one. Here's the link to their web page description:
http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/command-line

There is also another recent related eBook on this subject from O'Reilly:
• Learning Unix for OS X Mountain Lion by Dave Taylor (Released: September 2012)
This has the subtitle: "Using Unix and Linux Tools at the Command Line" and the
URL for the web page is:
http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920025870.do
It is also available for purchase from iBooks for $9.99:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/learning-unix-for-os-x-mountain/id563659679?mt=11

I'm not sure whether you would be able to also read this on your computer if
you purchased through iBooks, but you might, since O'Reilly does not use any
DRM with their books. They also make all their books available to Bookshare,
and international Bookshare members can also access all their books. If you
create an account and purchase eBooks directly from the O'Reilly web site,
you'll be able to download multiple versions (e.g., ePub, mobi, and PDF for
this volume), and any errata or minor revisions are always made available
through the links on your account. The ePub is readable on your computer as
well as on any iOS device. For some other, older books they may offer DAISY
versions.

These suggestions assume no previous background with Unix or Linux. For Mac
users coming from a Linux or Unix background, there are the older O'Reilly
books like "Mac OS X for Unix Geeks (Leopard), 4th Edition" by Ernest E.
Rothman, Brian Jepson, and Rich Rosen:
http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9780596520632.do

There's a really old O'Reilly web page dating in 2002 on the "Top Ten Mac OS X
Tips for Unix Geeks":
http://macdevcenter.com/lpt/a/2792

It's still good for a quick summary info, but the default shell has long since
changed from tcsh to bash, and the way startup is handled is completely
different.

One quick tip for Terminal users is that you can use command-c from the Finder
GUI to copy the location of a file or folder, and paste it into a command-line
argument in your Terminal shell. The full path to that file is always copied
that way, so it doesn't matter whether you are in the same directory in
Terminal as the file you want to operate on or not. There's also a free
"Go2Shell" application from the Mac App Store that will let you launch a
Terminal session that opens in the folder you're using in Finder. Here's the
URL at the Mac App Store:
http://itunes.apple.com/app/go2shell/id445770608?mt=12

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I have no clue. In fact I don't know anything about jaws 14 and normally I

find the repair installation so they must have changed a lot on the way it is.
I've just been concentrating on Voice Over although I use jaws every day at

solution. I'm afraid that in the meantime the only solution we can
offer is to ask you to test the voices with one voice application only.

Please note that the problem should not occur for activated
 (purchased) voices.

Re: External Blu Ray DVD/CD CDR or CDRW

2012-11-08 Thread Chris Blouch
It's been a while but last I checked OSX still didn't have native
support for BluRay. So while there are lots of drives out there that
might be 'compatible' there will have to be some 3rd party software to
read it. You can find out more about this by searching on "bag of hurt"
and bluray. I think it came down to issue with implementing the DRM
scheme which travels all the way from the disk up the HDMI to the
display. If anything in that chain breaks or is missing playback fails.
Someday I want to get one of these drives as well so I can play with
this but it's pretty far down on the list. As others have said, when in
doubt go with the OWC folks as they have a history of finding
models/flavors of hardware that happen to work right and/or include the
bit of software to make it so.

that external burners will automatically be recognized in your Mac
applications in the same manner that native drives are. OWC has a
history of checking out and supporting these functions on the Mac. A
Google search of "owc bluray" brought up this link:
http://eshop.macsales.com/search/external+blu+ray

You can probably follow up with direct queries to OWC. And there are
likely list users who use DVD and Bluray devices who can help you more

Re: digital recorder

2012-11-08 Thread Chris Blouch
If it were not for the requirement that the device be external,
QuickTime Player makes for a quick handy recorder. Just launch it, make
a new audio recording and then hit the Start Recording button. Of course
you can hook up external audio inputs to the mac if you were looking for
better sound.

blind friendly flatbed scanners? any ideas?

2012-11-08 Thread Adrienne Sinclair Chalmers
OK, I know a scanner is a scanner, but some of them do menus which don't talk
and make the dear little things more difficult for us to use. I suppose a lot
of them will have touch screens now.

Another issue I have had with scanners in the past is it being difficult to
position documents/books for the best results. I suspect improvements in OCR
may have made this less of a problem than it once was.

Anyway, it must be difficult to judge which scanner to buy, or it wouldn't
appear as a topic with such regularity. So, any nominations for a current model
which is reasonably priced, isn't fiddly to use, can handle documents at a
speed which wouldn't make it off-putting to scan a small book and works with
Macs would be very welcome indeed. I guess that reasonably priced thing rules
out all those, what I shall from now on know to refer to as, SARA things.

Cheers

You can't just use a voice in isolation with voiceover. They wrote
back and said they meant an application such as Visiovoice but I
emailed back and told them I had not opened visiovoice at all while
 using the demo.

Purchasing Infovox

2012-11-08 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Here's the link you want.

http://www.assistiveware.com/product/infovox-ivox/buy

Be sure to look at the explanation of the cost of the voices in credits. You
buy the credits first and then apply them to buy a specific voice in the
infovox ivox voice manager. You didn't specify whether or not you have the
infovox ivox voice manager; I would think it would have been installed when you
downloaded the demo but I'm not sure. Look in /Applications. You use the voice
manager to create an account and keep track of your voices and credits.

I haven't experienced this myself, but I think I may understand what
they mean. Basically, reading any app with Voiceover is fine. The
problem must be when other apps try to speak using the system voice.
Visiovoice was just their example of the kind of app they were warning
against. Some other examples would be the speech output for Growl, or
setting up certain apps like adium, Messages/iChat, or Skype to
automatically speak events. Another example is apps that are
self-voicing such as the RS Games client. Also, If you configure the
Mac in system preferences to automatically speak the time or to speak
alerts after a delay. Basically, anything else that tries to use the
voice on it's own while voiceover is running will apparently cause
 that problem with the demo.

I hope this explanation makes sense.

it is or anything as no demo is available to try it.
Would Amadeus be something that'll work with voiceover? And if so how
accessible is it?

2012-11-08 Thread ROBERT CARTER
Hi,

I use Sound Studio to edit the Tech Doctor podcast. I am very happy with it and
it is available in the Mac app store.

I found it much easier to use with VoiceOver than Amadeus. They are both good
editors.

Re: musical typing i Garageband?

2012-11-08 Thread Gavin Grundlingh
Hi Alex,

Which keystroke are you using to turn on musical typing? From what you
described, it sounds like you brought up the keyboard window instead of turning
on musical typing. Command-K shows or hides the keyboard window, while
Command-Shift-K toggles musical typing. Hope this helps.
