Re: Slacker Radio?

2013-02-14 Thread ppowells09
Hi Jessica, wish I could help with that one. I don't know I do not have the
free subscription. However when I did have the free subscription, my skips were
limited, Yet my listening was not. The differences were if you search for a
given artist, you got that artist along with any other similar artist, and
anybody else they chose to throw in there. My guess is the Launch of the new
iPhone app may have contributed to that issue. You can call them, 858-943-5000
or email their support. Whatever complaints they get, they claim they are
sending to their developers. Let's hope so. The iPad app is still functional.
Also, if you have an older version of the slacker app or have not downloaded
the new one don't. If you have an older version, synced to your computer from
your phone and you choose to reinstall it, it will work.

Unfortunately, Safari navigation is different. You have to interact with the
text you want to review, which is made frustrating if, say there is a link
in the middle of a long article. Once you interact, you can move by
character with vo-shift-left/right, or word with vo-left/right. You can also
enable quicknav and use the rotor to read by line or other chunks of text.

Yes. Cmd-left/right moves to the start or end of the line, up/down to the
top or bottom of the edit field. Option-left/right moves by word, up/down
by paragraph. Add shift to select by the movement instead of just moving
by it.

2013-02-14 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hey John its Katie. I remember seeing you in the summer of 2000! I met you at
an intensive workshop one week during August when I was at the Southern
California Conservatory of Music for 3 weeks. We were learning to use Sonar
with Jaws with about 4 other people. I had no idea you switched to the Mac,
that's awesome! I'm currently renting a Mac for a few months right now and have
really enjoyed it. I've been learning to use the Mac and Voiceover for about 3
weeks now and so far, I've been impressed with how much easier Voiceover is to
use compared with learning how to use Jaws. Sometimes, its a little challenging
like with navigating dialogs, reading paragraphs online, or interacting with
items, but its getting easier. Besides doing the quick start and getting
started tutorials for learning Voiceover, I've listened to some podcasts on the
Mac for the Blind site which have been helpful. One thing I've been learning is
to just throw everything you know about Windows aside because otherwise some of
the concepts for the Mac and Voiceover are different and you could get confused
if you try comparing how something works in Windows.
I'll try that suggestion for reading paragraphs in Text Edit.
I'm Glad to see you on the list.

amadeus pro mp3 advanced settings

2013-02-14 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear amadeus users,

When saving a file in mp3, I would like to enter 2 advanced options for the
lame encoder, but I think VoiceOver won't let me access the advanced dialog.

I have a file ready in amadeus pro. I then hit command shift s to save as, give
filename etc, choose mp3 as output, then I hit settings, and there is a
problem. I can set the bitrate, choose encoding type like cbr, ABR etc, but
when I hit the advanced button, nothing seems to happen. Does any of you know
how I can access this dialog?

One of the things I'm trying to achieve, is add a crc to each frame, because an
old player that I have likes it. If I don't, then a file may stop playing in
the middle. But that's just a side story. I'm hoping one of you can tell me how
to access the controls in the advanced dialog when saving an mp3 in amadeus
pro. Any ideas?

Kind regards,
Paul.

update to my Mac problem

2013-02-14 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Hi:
I managed to fix the issue of files asking for a password when deleting trash.
I also fixed the problem I just posted about my Mac acting like it was wiped,
and not letting me read or write due to permissions issue. Do not try this
unless you are really techy, or desperate.
. Here is the fix.
Boot up in recovery mode by pressing restart. Hold down command r when you hear
the startup sound. Wait about 2 minutes. Press command F5 to start VO. Press vo
space, and go to the utilities menu. Press enter on terminal. In the terminal
window, type resetpassword and press enter. The password utility opens, but we
will not reset password. At the top of the window, click on the iCon for the
hard drive of your Mac. Move to the user account field, and select the account
that is causing problems. At the bottom of the window, you see reset home
directory permissions and acts. Press reset. It takes several minutes to fix.
Once done, quit the open programs, restart the Mac using your hard disk to
boot. When you are returned, spotlight will reindex your stuff.

Fantastic. I think that was the only menu I missed. Brain fart moment for sure.
Mind you, it was about 2 am in the morning when I looked at it. :-)

Thanks. I'm downloading all the garage band and jam pack stuff now.

Thanks again.

Re: Editing text

2013-02-14 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, Alex. I thought doing VO shift page up and page down reads either the
previous or next paragraph. I tried doing this command in Safari when I was
reading an article, and nothing happened. Should I just do option down or up
arrow to read paragraphs instead? By the way, thanks for your description on
how the cursor behaves with Voiceover on the Mac. This makes more sense now.
I used to use outSPOKEN last time I was on a Mac with OS 9 and the cursor
navigation works the same way.

Yes. Cmd-left/right moves to the start or end of the line, up/down to the
top or bottom of the edit field. Option-left/right moves by word, up/down by
paragraph. Add shift to select by the movement instead of just moving by it.

HELP! Mac crashed

2013-02-14 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Help!
I rebooted my MBP running ML. It looks like a brand new Mac that has
been wiped. All folders are empty, VO is back to defaults. I am still
in my user account, and it is not locked. When I check the disk space
on my disk, it shows about 200GB free, and the disk is 500 GB. Based
on this observation, I know it is not empty. It is not locked, I'm
still the only account, it is an admin account. If I go to
applications, I see all my installed apps there. If iI go to my
computer, choose my user name, it shows my folders such as documents
and desktop, but says I do not have permition to read or write. I even
get that same error if I stay in applications to long. I tried to
access preferences, and it looks empty, but I cannot stay there long
b/c of cannot read or right permisions error.

I've tried rebooting, rebooting in recovery mode and repairing
permitions and repairing disk. I've tried logging off and back on my
account. I'm stuck!

The nls app is still not out, and the developers are silent; you did not

OK, two questions.

First of all, does anyone currently know the status on the app that was

regarding this, and they said it would probably be first quarter of this
year, but I've heard nothing more.

The second question is, there was a p0roject which I heard about from a
local NFB state convention which basically outlined a project called
Borrowed Sight. Apparently, what it's supposed to do is allow an IPhone 5
user to take their phone and log into the app, then in real time with a
human, be able to converse and they will tell you of your surroundings. I
don't mean like, there is a step/curb coming up. This isn't meant as a
substitute for good cane/guide dog O&M travel, so dont' get that idea.
Theyt're not there to protect you from getting lost/hurt/killed. They
would basically just say things like Hi Chris. You're now at Southpark
Mall. On your left is the food court. Over to your right is the exit to
JC Penny. Straight ahead is Dillards, and just off to your immediate back
is the public restrooms. As you walk in JC Penny, they'd then tell you
things like, OK chris, on your left is the perfume. On the right is a
jewlry counter. Straight ahead is a billibard sign that reads Marykay
Cosmetics for Sale.

Apparently, it uses both your phone, and your camera to do this. The
agent who is helping you would have a map which would be downloaded to the
place where you are. Apparently they hope to get things like even hotel
rooms and such mapped out as well, as the project grows mroe popular. I
haven't heard if this is still in beta or not. They didn't really demo it
at the convention obviously due to it being in beta. This was only
something that very very briefly was discussed. I'm just wonderring if
anyone knows what I'm talking about, and if either that or the Bard
project for I O S have yet launched.

Chris.

Hi Christine, I spoke to the slacker representatives this afternoon. They say,
they updated their iPad app before the launch of the iPhone app. They say, they
took the iPhone app from the ground up, and said they had received complaints
from those of us with vision issues about usability. We as visually impaired
subscribers, need to continue to complain to them. To let them know we are out
there And enjoy their service. They claim, the usability issues were
overlooked, and will be corrected. I explain to them, their app has been one of
the most accessible apps for music streaming services one could find. At any
rate, they say, they know about it, it yet, we need to continue to let them
know, it's not just a few of us.

Hi Matthew,
There are two tiers Of slacker subscriptions.
The plus subscription, $3.99 per month. The premium subscription is $9.95 per
month. The premium subscription, allows you to play albums/songs on demand,
create and save your own stations With more control over what artists are on
them. I believe on all levels you have access to ESPN radio, and ABC news. Go
to www.slacker.com and check it out. If I have given the site in error, Google,

Question about two I O S Projects

2013-02-14 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

OK, two questions.

First of all, does anyone currently know the status on the app that was
going to be created for downloading and listenning to NLS books from the
Bard web site on an I O S device? I know there was a butt load of talk
regarding this, and they said it would probably be first quarter of this
year, but I've heard nothing more.

They would
basically just say things like Hi Chris. You're now at Southpark Mall. On
your left is the food court. Over to your right is the exit to JC Penny.
Straight ahead is Dillards, and just off to your immediate back is the
public restrooms. As you walk in JC Penny, they'd then tell you things
like, OK chris, on your left is the perfume. On the right is a jewlry
counter. Straight ahead is a billibard sign that reads Marykay Cosmetics
for Sale.

Apparently, it uses both your phone, and your camera to do this. The agent
who is helping you would have a map which would be downloaded to the place
where you are. Apparently they hope to get things like even hotel rooms and
such mapped out as well, as the project grows mroe popular. I haven't heard
if this is still in beta or not. They didn't really demo it at the
convention obviously due to it being in beta. This was only something that
very very briefly was discussed. I'm just wonderring if anyone knows what
I'm talking about, and if either that or the Bard project for I O S have yet
launched.

Danny, once you're in the MainStage app, go into the MainStage menu by
pressing VO+M, then right arrowing twice and hitting VO+Spacebar. in that
menu you'll find the "download additional content" menu item.

This assumes you've gotten past the initial downloading of basic content
that automatically happens on first opening of the MainStage app. That
initial download screen, as I said earlier, is completely inaccessible, and
runs for about an hour or more.

Re: Garageband Jam Packs

2013-02-14 Thread Phil Halton
Actually, I was the one screaming about loops not showing up in the loop
browser, and I solved that problem. Basically, if you have a project time
signature other than 4/4, then virtually no loops will show up in the loop
browser because they're all recorded and stamped as 4/4 time sig.

Since discovering this little known and undocumented fact, I have had no
problems with the loop browser showing all relevant content from the
jampaks.

Don't forget also, that loops will be filtered to within two semitones of
the project key if so set in preferences thus reducing the number of loops
shown in the browser for any given project. Clearing that preference switch
will allow all loops regardless of key to be browsed.

Yup,

But, if you read the reviews, it seems that some instruments are loops are
not showing up after install. Just something to consider. Not saying it
happens to everyone but, it seems like it happens quite a bit.

The cursor is not like on windows; I find it easiest to think of the insertion
point as being between two characters, rather than under any character. As you
arrow along, vo reads out which character (or word) the cursor passed to get to
its new location. So, take the word "apple". If you start at the a and arrow
right, you would hear "a" as the cursor passed under the a to settle between
the a and the p. Another press of right arrow reads "p", because the cursor
went past the first p to land between the two Ps in the word. Next you'd hear
another p, then an l, then an e. Arrowing left will read the e again, since the
cursor backs up, passing the e to get between it and the l. Hopefully this
makes more sense.

Re: Editing text

2013-02-14 Thread Alex Hall
Quicknav must be off to do much editing, which is why I tend to leave it off
almost all of the time.

BusyCal Compatible with Voiceover?

2013-02-14 Thread Emilio Hernandez

Would anyone know if BusyCal is compatible with voiceover?
I have learned that it is a great improvement over the default calendar app.
Just curious if anyone has heard of this or has purchased the program, which is

Cheers.

The commands are online; google "common braille commands for iOS" to find the
Apple article on it. As to the mac, the process is indeed similar. Go to the vo
utility (vo-f8, with the function key if your settings require it) and go to
braille in the categories table. Hit the add button, and the process is pretty
timple from there. I haven't done it in a long time or I'd offer you better
steps, but let us know if you can't get things set up and someone can help

Re: Garageband Jam Packs

2013-02-14 Thread Phil Halton
All the GarageBand Jampaks are available through the MainStage app.
mainStage costs $30 through the app store, and once downloaded, you can
choose to download all or some of the additional content which includes both
instruments and loops from the six jampaks.

Note though, the MainStage app itself is in my opinion, fairly uselewss, and
is only a vehicle for downloading the GB jampaks. When you first download
and run Mainstage, it will automatically download some basic content, and
the download screen is completely VO inaccessible. So, just let it sit there
silently for as long as an hour or two - sighted assistance can be a real
help here in case you get worried.

Once the download of the basic content finishes, and you can get into the
app, you can then select "download additional content" from the MainStage
menu, select the content you want (I just checked the box "select all" and
then let it run. This will download all instruments and loops from all the
jampaks which is around 19GigaByte.

I can't quite remember, but I think this download screen is VO accessible,
so you can read what content is currently downloading and the percentage
complete etc. It'll take several hours - six or so - to complete. You might
want to run it overnight.

When done, all the jampacks will be stored in the
MacHd/Library/Audio/AppleLoops/Apple folder. You'll find there the following
folders of loops: "Apple loops for GarageBand, "iLife sound effects", and
then the six Jampak folders.

Re: best pandora client for macbook?

2013-02-14 Thread ppowells09
In the past, I have paid the monthly subscription for Pandora. It continuously
played for the subscription. It's my experience, it will stop playing after a
given amount of time if you are not a paid subscriber.

No problem. :) I agree it is very nice.

One thing with it is that sometimes it'll just stop playing. Simply relaunching

I agree. What I don't understand is why the iPad version is all right and the

correct them. That app has been decent for years. There was no reason to
totally rearrange the layout especially for those of us who can no longer
reliably use it on iPhone. I agree, the iPad app, seems not to have

changes they will make in their iPad app. It would be a real shame to

I'm assuming you don't have to go into the menu to do different things but it

Re: Do not download new slacker radio update

2013-02-14 Thread ppowells09
Yes, with a slacker subscription, you can cash content to your device. Also,
premium subscribers can listen to a given album on demand if it is within their
library. Some stations play songs that are not downloadable due to the rights
having expired. However one can still add them to a favorite songs station and
replay them. The iPad app still works.

With the subscription I have, you can cache content on the phone.

Re: Slacker Radio?

2013-02-14 Thread ppowells09
If one chooses to subscribe to slacker radio, be at plus, or premium, you
don't have all the ads. Premium subscribers, can play entire albums on demand.
Radio stations, are also more customizable Through a plus or premium
subscription. Yes, one can download music to one's device, however it is still
under their rights protection. You do not own it if you do not pay for the
subscription. Fortunately, the iPad app still works.

Re: Accessible means to fill out forms on the mac

2013-02-14 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi again folks.
Tim, I sort of got it to work. VoiceOver said Edit Text, but on a complicated
form like the IRS form 1040, I can't tell where I am and which field I am
choosing. I can type in text like you said, but who knows what field it went
in. I did do the VO shift space like you suggested. I suspect that a fairly
simple form would work ok. However, one like this with many fields gets
confusing. I have filled out some really horrible IRS forms in Windows.
However, unless you think up something else I haven't done, I guess I'll have
to wait for those smart folks in California to figure it out. After all, they
figured out what yours truly thought was the impossible, a blind person using a
touch screen.

One thing with it is that sometimes it'll just stop playing. Simply relaunching

Re: Slacker Radio?

2013-02-14 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Rich, Slacker is a service that offers news, talk and a wide range of
musical genres. It's sort of a hybrid between Pandora, regular radio and
Spotify. I think the premium service, which I never subscribed to, allows you
to store music on your device. Sad to hear it's not as accessible as it once
was as I think it's the best of its type.

Re: Do not download new slacker radio update

2013-02-14 Thread Christine Grassman
I am deeply disappointed about this update. I love Slacker, and do have a
subscription. I canceled my Pandora subscription, in fact, and switched to
Slacker, mostly because I like that I can skip songs if I like without a limit.
With the subscription I have, you can cache content on the phone.

Re: Do not download new slacker radio update

2013-02-14 Thread Jessica Moss
Oh wow, thanx for the info there, I had no idea there even was an update. I
love their service, but don't have a premium subscription.
What's the advantage to that aside from being able to listen to a station
simply by 1 artist? I picked out a station for Hannah to listen to 1 night,
and next thing I knew, after about possibly 20 minuttes or so, I got an alert
message telling me "station exhaustion," which I'd never gotten before, so I
thought that was interesting, but that's the only issue I have with it;
otherwise, I love it.

Slacker Radio?

2013-02-14 Thread Richard Ring
I've been called a slacker many times in my life, but I never had a
subscription! Seriously, what is Slacker Radio? What does the service allow one
to do? Now that it no longer functions correctly on the iPhone, I won't be
tempted to subscribe, but my curiosity makes me long to know!

Re: GnuPG and IOS

2013-02-14 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi, If you are willing to jailbreak your phone, Gnu privacy guard can be found
on Cydia as a console package, but i haven't found any graphical front ends for
it, and i haven't seen any plugins that lets you use gpg with Mail or other
things. This doesn't mean such plugins don't exist, only that i'm unaware of
them. Maybe someone else can step in here.
