transferring music from MBP to iPhone via ITunes

I’m using Yosemite and Mail with the classic view. I can come into Mail and interact with the messages table. Prior to Yosemite when I did this, I could go down the subject lines and just hit enter and read the text of each message. Once done, I could delete that message and be taken back to the list within the messages table. Now it seems that once I delete a message or after having read several, VO stops talking. I have to stop interacting with the messages table and come back in. This isn’t a big deal but it is annoying to have to do this after responding to messages or simply doing something else along the course of reading mail. Here’s hoping I’m just experiencing something weird and it may go away? thoughts? Re: Keyboard focus in Amadeus Pro
Hi Max, If you haven't done this already, turn off Quick Nav. I'm a big user of quick Nav so have to remind myself to do this when going into Amadeus Pro. Once quick Nav is off, then use the escape key if the keyboard focus won't go into the scroll area. Sometimes you have to hit escape several times to refocus but that usually works for me. Now if you've turned Quick Nav off already and are still having this issue, I'm stumped but typically this keeps the keyboard cursor where it should be for editing. Then all of the other editing keys like command-y and p actually work. Re: KNFB Reader Able To Read Unconventional Materials
I've tried it on round cans and bottles and depending on the print on the label and the width of the item, it can read some things but minimal. OCR on round items is really hard and this isn't the app for that. It does state this in the user guide. LCD screens vary in my experience from very well read to barely read depending on the contrast of print to background. I'm looking at some other factors such as size of the screen itself. This doesn't seem to be as big a factor as the contrast. Also, the screen print can't be scrolling. It must be stationary. I did try to read some things like print on a shirt, not the clothing label but the actual screen printed front and it did not read the shirt but I think the print was somewhat stylized. Re: KNFB Reader iPhone App
I've been using it on a variety of things and have found the app to be much more reliable in terms of getting good pictures initially, than my attempts with other OCR apps. I'd like to pride myself on being able to take fairly good pictures for OCR purposes but for some reason, I never had good luck or consistency with the other OCR apps. Last night, just for fun and to prove to my husband that the app worked, I took a picture of our television screen from about 8 feet away. It's a 42 inch TV. There was an add on for one of those legal services that sues if you have had some disease or other. The app read most of the text on screen accurately including a phone number and web address. It faltered near the end of the text but I suspect it was scrolling or stylized. It did make an attempt though. To say I was in shock is an understatement. Now I wish I'd saved the scan. Members of the National Federation of the Blind have worked with K-NFB Reading Technology, Inc., which developed the app along with Sensotec, Inc. KNFB Reader is now available in the iTunes app store. Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said: The National Federation of the Blind has been involved for forty years in the development of technology that helps blind people to acquire access to the various print materials that we all encounter from day to day. Ever since our first collaboration with Ray Kurzweil to develop the Kurzweil Reading Machine, which was the size of a household appliance, we have been interested in the development of better and more portable reading technology. Print on office documents, flyers, letters, menus, labels, and throughout our environment is still a part of everyday life, even with the increased electronic transmission of documents. Now revolutionary technology that resides on the phones that many of us carry each day provides instant access to the printed word. Re: KNFB Reader iPhone App
I'd agree with Buddy here. I don't recall what resolution this is set to use but I know that I get vastly better results on my flatbed scanner using a higher resolution and the time it takes is imho negligible. I have found things it won't read, very stylized labels, T-shirts and work shirt logos, yes I did try these just for fun. My other issue with the less expensive apps was lighting. I never knew just what the right lighting was save for a direct light shining right on the document. That didn't even work at times. The other thing that frankly is useful about the app is that it speaks the scan right away. When I'm scanning something using a mobile device, I' usually checking it for Id purposes. If I want to scan and save, yes I can do that from the app but usually I'll label whatever it is in braille for more detailed processing later. When I travel, I just want to know shampoo from hand lotion and decaf coffee from regular. This in combination with TapTap See is a must-have for travel imho. So they've done a lot of work to optimize pictures to account for all the stuff we can't account for, in as much as is possible. I don't think the less expensive apps do either of these things as well. Of course, if you can find something for less that works for you, by all means use that. GiGi, that’s the beauty of the tilt function. I’m usually fairly good at balancing the phone but if I do more than one scan of something in the same spot, such as just moving another piece of mail under it, I tend to tip the phone. The thing that confuses me at times is the clock face orientation. This means that the keyboard acts exactly like it does for sighted folks when VO is off. However, if you hold your finger on a key, it will speak, just as though you had traditional or touch typing enabled instead. That way, you could use split tap if you really wanted. For my part, touch typing still works great. search box in app store
Well, thanks to me accidentally pulling out my power cord while doing the upgrade, I had to put my phone in recovery mode and lost pretty much everything. I thought I'd backed it up but that was the work phone. Note to everyone, back up your device before upgrading. DUH. My issue now as I reload the apps I really want is that the search box is behaving oddly. I don't yet have the Fleksy keyboard enabled and for some weird reason, clear text button doesn't. You have to go to the end of the text and hit the delete key repeatedly. that doesn't always work though. Anyone else having this issue? Also, after the first search, my choice of typing echo, characters and words, behaves more like the Fleksy keyboard and echoes nothing at all, not even keyboard clicks. I haven't tried typing in any other app yet but this is really annoying when searching for things in the app store. If you save a Skype call in a lossy format, like MP3 or something compressed, you will eventually have to bring it into a sound editor, where it will get edited, saved, and eventually compressed a second time to a lossy format. The more times you do this, the more artefacts you'll introduce to your recording. You can tell Audio Highjack to save in .aiff format, which is the Mac equivalent of a .wav file and is therefore completely uncompressed.I know you also use Amadeus Pro, so let me talk you through how I use the two together. I set up Audio Highjack so that my voice is on one channel, and the Skype caller's voice is on the other. The advantage of doing this is that you can then bring the file into Amadeus Pro, and put each channel in a separate track. Once that's done, convert each track from a mono to a stereo track, and you have you and the Skype caller in both ears. Because you are both on separate tracks, you can apply different effects as appropriate. For example, normalise each track separately so you are both sounding similar in volume. If the Skype caller sounds too bright or too dull, you can apply equalisation just to the caller, and not to you. Finally, if you wish, you can pan each track to get a stereo effect. Then when you're done getting things sounding just how you want, mix it all down back onto one stereo track. It sounds a bit complicated writing it down, but i do this all the time and now it's just a routine. The other advantage of Audio Highjack is that it isn't specific to Skype. I use it to record FaceTime Audio calls and calls from more obscure chat programmes where appropriate, so it's a very powerful tool that doesn't lock you in. And finally, while I am not testing Yosemite, I would think Audio Hijack will work with the new continuity features of iOS 8 and Yosemite. This means you can make a call on your iPhone, and record it on your Mac with Audio Hijack. If you have a carrier that offers HD Voice for instance, then you'll get brilliant sound doing that. Hope that's of some help. Audio Hijack is one of the coolest things about a Mac I reckon. I found that if I skip this step and used mp3 converter directly on the .mov file, only one side of the conversation got converted. I don't understand why this is. I would rather not have to use two steps, but it works for me and until I get some mental space to find another solution it does the job. Interesting. This only seems to happen on my 5 and not the 5S. Come to think of it, this used to happen occasionally on my 4S as well but not as often. Siri is practically useless on the 5 I have. I'm considering doing the good old reboot, Lock button and home button together for 10 seconds, to see if that helps. On the 5S Siri is mostly usable and fairly good. Re: what are LOC dots?
There are a number of different sizes of tactile marking dots. If you want to use them, I've found them to be extremely light weight and not at all interfering with the key action or closure of the MBP or other laptops. I would get the smallest size possible and sorry that I can't quote exactly what that is but depending on where you order them, the good people there should know. I know that the NFB Independence Market had the very tiny ones this summer so I'd expect you could find them in the NFB Store. Also Independent Living Aids carries smaller dots. I'd imagine other companies selling such things do as well. I find them helpful on the function keys, 1 on F8 and 1 on F3 as those are the keys I use most often. Re: using batch processing in Amadeus Pro
Thanks so much for these excellent instructions. My goal was to normalize a number of files. I do like your ring tone example though and may just have to try that. Jenine Stanley dragonwalke...@gmail.com On Jul 29, 2014, at 5:16 AM, Paul Erkens paul.erk...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Jenine, I've had difficulties myself as well, and I found out how to get things going. To batch process files in amadeus pro, do the following. First, fire up amadeus and to begin with, hit command shift n to open the batch processor. The layout of the window is actually simple, once you understand the basics. There are 4 tabs: format, actions, meta data and artwork. For now, forget about the last 2. If you just want to batch convert, then only the format tab is important. By default, after you open the batch processor, you will already be inside the format tab, so skip all tab stuff for now. Next, you will want to select the files to work on. However, even though this is the logical way of doing it, you first need to set a number of options. This is because once you have selected your source files, amadeus will immediately begin cranking away, without you having the chance to set conversion options first. So, first set options, and then hit select files. Let's go through the options. Resulting format is the first option you need to set. Just select your desired destination format from this popup menu, like mp3, m4a etc. To be clear: this is what you want your source files to become, once amadeus converted them. Once the destination file format is chosen, use the button next to the format chooser, to specify your settings. For example, say you want your source files, in whatever format they are now, to be converted into mp3 files, with a bitrate of 256. Then first select mp3 from the resulting format menu, and then hit the settings button next to it, so you can select 256 kilobits for your resulting mp3 files. There's a whole lot more to know, but this will get you started. After you choose your desired bitrate, or other destination file options from the settings dialog, be sure to hit okay there, and you will return to the amadeus batch processor. The next option in the batch processor is called destination location. In short, this is straight forward. The popup has a few preset folders for you to choose from, but of course you can also point to a folder of your own choice. Again: this is the folder where you want your converted files to go. Next option is delete original. This is a checkbox. If you are totally sure that your batch processor conversion options are correct, which take some experience, only then would I advise you to turn this thing on. If you find that you are satisfied with your converted files, you can always delete your source files manually, so that you are in control. Next is: change name to. I never use this, and now that I'm looking at it again, I wouldn't bother. Same goes for filter files, which is the next option, and I'd also not worry about entering regular expressions. Next is: open subfolders recursively. This affects your selection of source files. With this checkbox off, only files, single files from 1 folder that you select, will be converted. With this checkbox on, all subfolders of the source will be traversed and converted. To clarify: let's say you have a folder called big store, full of audio. It doesn't matter where this imaginary folder is on your mac. Just imagine that big store, contains audio files, and also imagine that big store has subfolders, also containing audio. So we were looking at this checkbox labeled: open subfolders recursively. Now. If you have this checkbox off, then amadeus will look in this big store source folder, and if it finds any audio files at its top level, only those will be converted. If you turn this checkbox on, then amadeus will also go through each and every subfolder inside big store, and all audio it encounters there, will also be converted. Keep in mind that it is up to you, to determine what happens to the original audio. If you have set a destination folder for conversion, different from the source folder, then the original audio will still be safe and unaffected, and it won't be overwritten by the converted files. Next option: retain folder hierarchy. The folder hierarchy is simply the layout of a particular folder, with all subfolders beneath it. Of course, only if you chose to recursively go through lots of audio folders, there's the question how to store all those files on your destination. You could either choose to throw all resulting files into one single folder, it being a collection of all the files gathered from all source folders recursed, or, you can choose to have amadeus recreate the entire folder hierarchy at your destination. If you do that, then you will see the entire folder tree on your

There are lots to learn about the app. I know that atapplevis.com there have been podcasts produce on how to use the app. I would do a search for Blind Square to pull them up. HTH. Aftershokz recharger
Sorry if this is off topic but I am using them with my MBP and iPhone. I have apparently misplaced the USB charger cable for my Aftershokz Blues. these are the originals. It seems that a regular USB cable doesn't fit them for some reason. Do they require a special cable? audio question
This is possibly not a question specifically for this list but maybe someone here can help. I am looking at acquiring a small mixer with 4 outputs and one line in input. I want to use this to record interviews, podcasts and to mix things like the computer sound, i-phone and other things with a mic. Can I then also have say a pair of Aftershokz Blues headphones connected to the Mac to hear what I'm doing as my one and only line-in jack will be taken up by the mixer? Or am I making this too hard? :) Jenine Stanley dragonwalke...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Eric, What kinds of problems might I encounter with the USB mixer? I like no hum. Although I have a range of cables for the line-in, I haven't marked the troublesome ones or gotten rid of them. Also, if you chose to go with a USB mixer, you will not experience any hums and other annoyances, if for some reason, your line-in cable is not properly shielded. I am trying to transfer files from the Mac to my booksens DM flash drive and for some reason the BookSens is not recognized when I plug it in via USB to either the mac or the PC. recommendations for headset with i-Phone 5
I have to use my i-Phone 5 for work interviews and sometimes when using the earphones from Apple, people have trouble hearing and understanding me. I'd like to get a better headset, though not much I can do about the phone quality. Kudos to Apple Accessibility
For those who don't think anything ever happens with Apple Accessibility, here's a happy story. I recently decided to stop complaining about a couple issues and take them to Apple Accessibility. One issue in IOS is the speaking of the word selected before some but not all picker items. This is maddening in long lists of items like times. They responded immediately asking for an example of an app in which this occurs. It's easy to find in the calendar app. I reported such and got a very nice note back stating that the issue has been documented and passed to the appropriate department. Yeah, I know, that sounds like lip service but I don't think so. I think it actually got done. I also received detailed instructions for how to report the problem of VO losing focus on some IOS apps. I thought at first it was just the Amazon app but the more I explored the issue, it seems to happen to a lesser degree in other apps as well. I'll have more time this weekend to try the instructions and send a report. Have I ever heard from Dell when reporting things? Microsoft? rarely and then it is a cnned response. Yay Apple. Yay Apple. Re: Amadeus Pro file joining question
Thanks Much Jonathan. I could not remember for the life of me the end of file command. I'll try this with the mix paste as well, as I like that transition better than a straight paste in many instances. Not only does it work all the time, but the other reason why I like it is that if you want to, you can do a mix paste to get just the right join between the two files that you want. IOS and picker items
Is there any way to get VO not to say Selected before every picker item? It's beyond annoying. This only seems to happen in IOS 7.1.1. It can say Selected after the item but if you need to say, set a time, getting the minutes correct can be tedium. editing a bulleted list in Pages
I was editing a document my husband sent me. It was a Word .docx file but came into Pages OK. He had a large bulleted list of things and each was several sentences long within its bullet point. As I tried to edit, each word came out as list selected or something like that before it said the word. There was a lot of unnecessary verbiage before each word which made editing tedious. Possible but tedious. Any thoughts on how to edit such lists? I'm almost sure you guys were talking about this earlier last week. I should just read every post because right after you discuss something, I usually end up having to do it. :) Jenine Stanley dragonwalke...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. recalcitrant Apple keyboard
I have the Apple bluetooth keyboard and though I know usually when the batteries are going, it seems to often just be recalcitrant about keystrokes or commands. Today I have to exit Mail and come back in before it would register that I was hitting the delete key or enter key. Often in my Twitter client, Night Owl, keyboard commands will be totally ignored for many presses of the key until finally something clicks. I do love the feel and size of the Apple keyboard and thus have not tried a full size regular keyboard to know if these things are endemic. I'll probably try the commands on the MBP keyboard next,as that brilliant idea just popped into my head but does anyone else have this issue with the apple bluetooth keyboard? Never mind on calendar question
Never mind, I figured out how to deal with the Outlook calendar invitations. In case anyone receives one, here's what I did. 1. Interact with the text in the mail message. 2. There will be an attachment in there. Use VO space to select it. A menu will appear. 3. Choose Open attachment, only if you know who it's from and all that of course. 4. It will open in Calendar. Move to the current date and interact with it. 5. Choose Grid from the list and interact with it. 6. I knew the day when the appointment was so I arrowed down to that date and saw 1 item there. There's probably an easier way to do this. 7. I then interacted with the day and a group of buttons came up with choices to accept the appointment, etc. It also notified me that the appointment needed some action taken. 8. I hit enter on Accept and Voila! Now I'm sure there is an easier way to handle these kind of appointments and I'd love to hear it, especially for when you don't know the date in advance or you want to add things like reminders to the appointment. trouble with copying files
I am having a bit of varying difficulty copying files and I wonder if someone can walk me through this in Mavericks. I have files in the Documents folder, which does not show up on my doc btw, and I want to copy them to an SD card. I have inserted the SD card and have gone to the file list in the documents folder. I turned off cursor tracking and moved to the next file I wanted to select and hit VO-space. This said the file was added to the selection but then opened it in Preview. It did this for every file I added to the selection. Then it began just kicking me out of the Documents folder and onto the desktop which showed the SD card. I finally selected all of my files and hit command-c to copy them to the clipboard. This apparently went fine but then it was time to go back to that desktop and get to the SD card. I never could figure out how to get back there. Hitting command-shift-d got me to Finder but didn't show the SD card by name. I have another annoying problem which I'm sure I accidentally caused but need to know how to fix. When I go into the list of files in the documents folder and want to go down to the Devices list to get to external drives, I have several programs listed before Devices and as I arrow down, each one opens. That is, it immediately scans over the page and then stops. I then have to press the scan button, do my scanning either one or multi-page, and then press the finish button. At first I got a little confused by the initial once-over scan, thinking it was the scan, but in fact, its just an initial pass that sets up the scan I think. This is getting to be a ramble, but the point is, the first pass of the scanner doesn't actually scan, you have to then press the scan button to start the scan process. The two scan passes are different in their speed and sound as well, the once-over is fast, and the actual scan passes are a bit slower. Hope that didn't muddy the waters too much. Color me impressed with Fine Reader
Thanks for the heads up on Abbyy Fine reader. I just took the plunge and bought it and wow, easy to use and fast, intuitive as well. I'm using it with a Cannon scanner that we just bought via the Apple Store and it's working great. a program like CN Levelator
I use a program on my PC for doing some editing to spoken word audio, CN Levelator. It performs a range of effects on the file from normalizing to other equalization things I don't fully understand but it can take, say, a conference call mp3 file and even everyone out, take out the background noise to a great extent and just make the file sound better. It's an older program and only works with .wav files. Does anyone know if there's an equivalent for the MAC? Performing all the adjustments this program does is possible with something like Amadeus but it would take forever and I'm not sure I'd get the same results. I'm particularly interested in spoken word audio fixers if you will. mostly fixed my Prismo issues
It turns out that one of my issues with Prismo was that it wasn't recognizing my scanner due to a bad installation. I went in and cleaned out the scanners part of Printers and Scanners under System Preferences, reinstalled the scanner and Voila! Prismo is a bit clunky imho but it does work. I need to adjust the parameters for dpi as 600 doesn't really give me enough to get good recognition from the several items I've tried thus far. Re: Stability of the Mac
This is an interesting question. From just an average user point of view, I have been using my MacBook Pro since early February and use a Windows laptop for work. They literally sit side by side on my desk. I had used the iPhone since 2011 so was sort of familiar with how VoiceOver works and love it on the IOS platform that said, it's very different on the Mac or OS side. Speaking first to stability, I managed to crash the MBP twice in the first week but literally have not made the speech stop since then. Has my MBP slowed down or acted strangely a few times without explanation? yes, but it's come back to its original performance soon after these fits. My Windows machine frequently hangs up both in the operating system in general and because of screen reader/video issues. Outlook is really bad about this and I usually have to reboot at least once a day. Yes, I maintain my Windows machine well with weekly cleaning and such but ... The one thing that you will find difficult at first but which, if you continue to plug away at it will soon become second nature, is the whole concept of interacting with things. I hated it at first and still am not fond of it. Unlike the IOS realm, you have to take an extra step to access some things using Voice Over. Once you get used to it though and combine Quick Nav with the regular VO operation, and ask this list a ton of stupid questions, :) you'll be fine. I really like the variety of quality voices available with VO too. It's fast and responsive. I'm sold. Be sure though to give yourself some time and be patient. Beprepared to read over and over any and all instructions, podcasts and other things about switching, commands and apps. Jenine Stanley dragonwalke...@gmail.com On Apr 1, 2014, at 2:14 PM, Scott Rumery blindfait...@gmail.com wrote: Hello Scott, You will probably get a lot of varying opinions on this topic so you will have to decide which ones you will take seriously or not. Having said this let me first tell you that ever since I switched to using a Mac more than 3 years ago I have become probably one of the biggest Apple fan boys that there is, so my thoughts on this subject are going to have a strong Apple bias to them. If you are wanting a computing environment that is very stable compared to what you are currently getting on the Windows platform then in my opinion you would be very happy with a Mac. The instability of my Windows computer is exactly what helped me to make the decision to make the switch over 3 years ago. I used to have to restart my Windows computer several times a day and now that I am on a Mac I hardly ever need to reboot. You will notice that I said hardly. I have had to restart my Mac once in a while due to lost speech or something, but as I stated with the use the word hardly this does not happen with any regularity. Now having said all of this let me give you a little word of caution about switching platforms. I teach blind people who make this switch how to use their Macs for a company called Fedora Outlier, LLC and one the biggest mistakes that people make is thinking that switching from a Windows computer over to a Mac computer is going to be easy. It isn't as easy as one might think. After all you are going to have to learn how to use a totally different operating system and a new and different screen reader. Now having said this if you are determined to learn the new platform and you do it correctly by this I mean that you don't try and learn everything in one day you can definitely learn how to use a Mac very quickly. One more thing. In response to your question as to whether or not a Mac is more stable than a Windows computer. Remember earlier when I said that when I was still using a Windows computer I would have to restart the computer several times a day, well with my current Mac which is 2012 Mac Book Pro with 4 Gigabytes of ram I haven't had to restart it in about 2 weeks. My Mac is on 24 hours a day. During the day when I am working I am actually using it, and at night the Mac will just sleep, but it hasn't been turned off in at least 2 weeks now and VoiceOver is running flawlessly . I hope that all of this helps you with your decision and if you need anything else please just ask. IOS apps and TV access
So we are going to buy a new, or at least new for us, TV. We're looking at a Samsung 55=inch, don't know the exact model but it's last year's hot Samsung TV. The salesperson, in typical salesperson hype, said that it has Apple TV built in. How does this work? Can I control it through my phone or MBP? He said there was an app, Samsung Smart Remorte, or something like that. anyone used this? Accessibility thoughts? the regular remote that comes with the TV scares me enough. Is there a universal remote app I can use with Samsung TVs? Help! :) Jenine Stanley dragonwalke...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group.
